Dr. March is a very good professor, but don't expect a walk in the park. General Chemistry is difficult at UAB.
hahaha....this class is **** easy!!!seriously if you have common sense...you will ace the crap out of this class! i am not kidding at all
The recitations are difficult, and you have to do them on your own but if you study the chemistry more in depth than he teaches it, you will do good on the exams.
Good chemistry teacher, and the tests are not difficult, ESPECIALLY if you do the recitations.
Not a cakewalk, but March actually tries to explain things and does a decent job of it. Fairly nice in person as well.
He teaches by a powerpoint presentation that he prints out as a packet and you buy it from him at the beginning of the semester. I liked having the notes but they didn't help me much in stdying for the tests. Just do the recitations and you will be ok
This class can be hard even if you understand the recitations. The essay part of the test is a bia!!
If you study and figure out Dr March then I am sure you and I will do well, it is just being able to take the material and do well on his tests
he's so easy. he has extra credit out the wazoo and he scales a whole stinkin lot. he's a really nice guy too.
Really nice guy. He wants to help you understand, but his explanation can go into more depth than is necessary. Tests are fair (multiple choice and short answer). He also offers plenty of extra credit. Overall, a good teacher.
boring
Dr. March is VERY nice. He's a smart ass sometimes but all in good fun. His tests usually have built - in bonuses (meaning you can miss a problem and still get 100). He lets you drop your lowest test score. If you show you care he will help you a lot.
he is a great guy but his teaching is terrible he knows it he just can't teach it
Great teacher! Incredibly smart and really cares about how well his students do and what they think. Tests are challenging and you have to be able to think quick on tests, but they are totally fair. Note: Don't just memorize steps!
Great teacher! Willing to work with you and the class as a whole or individual... he makes you learn it, but that way you know what is going on on the final. A++!
Excellent teacher... teaches the concepts, but doesn't always provide an obvious way to work a problem. He'll show you two pieces of the puzzel, and then help you (but not flat out tell you) how to derive the solution from it. Very forgiving class and plenty of wiggle room to make an A.
Be prepared for the rollacoaster, power-point ride to a nervous breakdown. More people drop their pre-med careers due to chemistry and UAB's "weeding out process" than I have ever seen. Be prepared for the "learn chemistry on your own." speech, because that is what you will have to do.Pray & study
Students tend to like Dr.March because he is the lesser of two evils. Compared to Hamilton he is better, however compared to other university chemistry teachers he is horrible. Know how to do chemistry before taking the Gen Chem classes.
A very good man with a well organized class. The trouble comes from the student help. I am post-graduate and these kids talking down to me just ****me off. He needs to get rid of the cheap help.
hated this man and his class
this class is great if you can teach YOURSELF chemistry, b/c March is not very helpful and pretty vague which comes back to haunt you on tests. Oh yeah, what happened to ALL of the extra credit and curving that he supposedly does, guess I didn't take him the "right" semmester.
Studied..still ended up with D's and F's on the test. The class avg. for 3 out of the 4 tests were D's and F's. It is not something that I'm lacking (something that HE is lacking). Prepare for that "learning Chem. speech." It is a bunch of b.s. Can a pre-med student give brain surgery??? Hell no
good guy, not too great teacher...quite bland, but pretty easy, i suppose...really nice outside the class, though
The class is pretty difficult but he does try to help you along the way by curving grades and giving multiple chances to redo your homework. He talks to students as if we know the material so it is very confusing from time to time. The only way i had a chance at passing is because I took it in h.s.
Dr. March has to be one of the worst professors that I've ever had in my life! He is very vague in explaning ANYTHING! I knew the material well but I failed the tests. Be prepared to hear BS about him scaling the tests because he won't. I guess that taking the Post-Probation March wasn't wise.
This teacher sucks!!!
He was very willing to help students outside of class but the material was very unclear. He could not understand why the students in my class didn't understand him. He covers the board with his body when he does examples and his handwritting sucks. But he did curve grades and that helped a lot.
Knows his stuff and says his tests are designed for you to "problem solve" and "think on a higher level." It pissed me off because alot of his material wasn't covered in the lecture. Lectures are easy, but tests are a killer. Avoid this guy at all costs! 40% of 200 students failed his 2nd test!!
Dr. March does not teach he goes over the material I have the notes sitting in front of me I don't need you to read it to me. EXPLAIN IT!!He expects the students to already know the material and the book sucks. Recitation is a waste of time. This class made me hate chemistry.
you have to study for chemistry regardless. he's a great teacher and explains things well. if you have trouble, you may want to read the book as well.
i am not doing so well in the class. All of the material on the third test was covered on one day. He's a cool guy, but not that great of a teacher. we're not all that smart. He needs to slow down a little bit and take more time to teach us the material instead of flying through it
The first two test were fair and not too difficult everything on test presented in one way or another in lecture..however the 3rd test he covered all the material in one day and did a terrible ****ing job and the third test was just overall ****ed
Great teacher, easy class. He scales at the end so don't worry!
Of course Chemistry is hard but I made A's on all the tests. To pass Dr. March's class you must READ! I practically stopped going to class bc it was a waste of time. I did not get the lecture. You already have the notes so go thru the notes and the book and you should be fine...
Everyone seems to have problems with him...try Hamilton(your alternative). He'll make you love March. Class is pretty fair...I disagree with the way lab and the wanna-be-help-class recitation.
Dr. March is very clear in class, and if you follow along with his lecture then you don't have to worry. You do need to read the book and do the practice problems that he assigns...if you do all of that then you'll be fine.
He is a good teacher, but makes horrible tests. I would not recommend taking him for chemistry.
Do ALL the problems in the book. Tests are extremely thinking based, do you really understand the big picture concept. You can always go to him for help. He is great at that. Be careful, he is FAMOUS for MISCALCULATING GRADES and typos on tests. Always ask, count up your points, keep all graded stuff.
Some of Dr. March's tests are really hard, but he does scale some. Recitations and online homework take a long time to do. I learned a lot about chemistry in this class. Going to SI helps you do better in this class.
Good teacher! He's more than willing to help if you need it
He shows general chemistry is fun. I tutored and thus sitted in his class for 4 terms and keept learning new things, would still do it if I just could stop thinking some students are too closed minded. Read!!, do all the excercises you need to feel good about the material and take most out of Recitation and everything will be fine. this takes time
Great professor that's interested in what he teaches and tries to help students as best he can. I made an A in 115 and a B in 117

very cool teacher...keeps class interesting

March is a fairly good teacher but he doesn't go nearly indepth as much as he should. The recitations and online homework are a major pain in the ass.
good guy
Cutie and Nice! Tests pretty hard but he helps you prepare very well
He does a good job teaching and he seems like he wants to help the students.
Very nice man...Helps his class out a lot...recommend taking him for chemistry..
I actually learned something!
easy to follow. actually answers questions you ask. good teacher
I love Dr. March. He's alot of fun in class and he really does want the students to learn and do well. If you put in the effort to learn, he will reward you for it.
Excellent professor, take him if you can.
aside from the fact that the class was at 8 AM i loved the class Dr.March is one of few gifted with the ability to teach and teach very well...and he's just an overall great guy
Um...this class sucked. Dr. March did his best but it was by far the hardest class I had this semester. I had a death in the family and he didn't work with me at all about it. I got a 0 on a test I missed when I had to attend a funeral. Other than that he is a really good professor just don't send him an email and expect a response.
The lectures were not very helpful so thank god for SI. The lab was a full chapter ahead of the course. moves too fast through the material. He speaks clearly and is a good communicator, but he doesn't always return emails.
March is not a very good teacher. He doesnt explain well and he speeds through lecture assuming that you know as much as he does about chemistry. If you choose to take him, be prepared to study every night and make sure you do well on the online hw and recitations. I dont recommend him
March is a good teacher. His lectures are easy to understand but can go quite fast. The test are difficult but managable if you study. Studying is a must!!!
Dr. March is brilliant and very knowledgeble. The class itself is hard, but March is willing to help. Lectures go fast, but he is willing to help after class if needed.
Very entertaining, nice guy, makes the class fun.
Mr March, if you can take him. I came into college with no chem background, I made an A. Great teacher just pay attention and ask as many questions, there is never a wrong answer. Print off the notes, it really helps because he is fast. Oh yeah did i mention he scales, labs are a little difficult though, and get a good group in recit, it helps
Very funny, a good teacher, give fun extra credit assignments.
Heyy every Dr. March changed his teaching methods... he has gotton a lot harder then what he used to teach like. He gives multiple choice but in a way where it will confuse you. I had an interest in chemistry but lost it after taking his class.
He is AmAzInG. I love Dr. March. He is funny and really tries to get everyone involved. I had him for 115 and 117 and would not trade it for the world. I am most likely going to come back and do SI for his. Very helpful in and out of class. My advice--> dont take Hamilton!
I love Dr. March. HE is one of the best teahcers I ahve ever had. He makes the class fun and exciting. He is really helpful! Jusst attend class and do the practice test and the class is a breeze!
good teacher
March is cool. Goes fast. Read the book, pay attention in lecture. Do the questions in the back of the book, go to SI and take practice tests. You will get an A!
The class is hard, but he is awesome! He teaches wonderfully and wishes for everyone to do well so he gives extra cred! GET HIM!
He realizes that chem isnt for everyone therefore although its hard, he gives alota extra credit therefore making it easy! He is great! Get him!
I don't know what class you people are taken but Dr.March is terrible!!! I'm a person who usually makes all A's and I barely have a C in this class. I've studied 2 to 3 weeks for each test and still don't understand them. I could do the practice tests from past semesters but the actual tests are nothing like them!!!
One of the best professors I have had thus far. He embodies what I think a college professor should be. He's clear and concise, entertaining, and is available to anyone who needs extra help. He also expects you to help yourself and is very fair. He seems like a balanced individual. Don't take this class if you don't like to learn.
Wonderful teacher. extremely helpful. explains everything very clearly. He is by far your best choice for a chem teacer. CHOOSE HIM
I took 115 and 117 with him. He is a very good professor. Helps not only with chemistry but gives random life wisdom in class, which I actually found helpful. He's difficult and the class takes a lot of work, but you come out knowing a lot. Dr. March also curves tests and gives enough extra credit. He's easy to work with, you just need to try.
Dr. March is such a wonderful teacher, and possibly one of the best teachers at UAB. He really knows his materials, and he's extremely approachable. Read the text and practice! Practice is a must!
Love Dr. March. He is such a wonderful teacher. Really knows his materials and is willing to help you out. His test are sometimes tricky, but if you read the book then you'll do very well in his class. He expects the best from everyone and he curves his grades, which is a bonus!
March is a wonderful professor. When it comes to chemistry he knows what he is talking about and he is able to teach any level. He doesnt take role so if you dont come he wont notice but you need to go so that you wont miss any of the material. His test are fair and if you do some stuff at the back of the book then you will be fine.
Dr. March is an awesome teacher! He really cares and wants to help his students. His lectures are really fast, but if you go to SI and actually study you should do well.
Very good teacher, explains material well, easy test which are usually scaled.
The teacher is the best for gen chem definitey take march for 115 and 117 especially since SI isnt offered anymore!!!
Prof. March is a great teacher. He explains things very well and can make anything that he talks about interesting. If you have a science major and must take Gen Chem then March is really your only option if you want a great foundation. I was terrible at chemistry in HS but taking March's class has rekindled my interest in the subject. Take him.
i loved this professor! though the class is difficult that is because it is chemistry!! it isnt an subject but dr. march really cares about his students and wants you to do well. he gives random in class assignments to raise your grade and curves most tests. if you take chem take march!!!!!!
Definitely take Dr. March for chemistry, he actually makes the class interesting. Everyone I know who had his class loved him, and everyone I know who wasn't in his class wished they were.
Dr. March is a great teacher. He answers any question you have for him, he explains everything you need him to explain, and he is a nice person. He never took attendance because the class was so big, but I recommend coming to class every day since he explains everything so well and tells you exactly what will be on the tests.
Not a good teacher at all. He doesn't explain much of anything. And his turnover rate or the rate at which he returns graded papers is horrible. It usually takes 2 weeks to get back a multiple choice test.
I love Dr.March's class. He is so helpful and really wants his students to do well. He answers all questions asked and won't continue if a student is blurry on some information. Print the notes off for his class, and do the online homework. Go to recitation and SI and you will do fine. Bottom line: Put in the effort and you will be fine.
Dr. March is awesome, i love his class. He helps you if you need help and does not move on until everyone understands. Overall a great teacher, I highly recommend him. Do the homework and go to recitation and you will do fine.
Dr. March is a sweetheart. He really cares about your success in his class. Try hard and you should get an A or a B. Go to class!
I took Dr. March for 115 and 117. i adore him. attendance is necessary to do well but there is no way to do poorly in his class unless you put forth NO effort.
I took Dr. March a few years ago, and he was a great teacher! He still stops and talks to me when he sees me in the chemistry building. He's such a nice teacher, and his teaching style is very clear and understandable. He also tells funny stories from his undergraduate years.
Everyone claims he is the best teacher to take, but so far the students in the other classes seem to not only be doing better grade wise, but they understand better, he is just the nice one, he is too smart for his own good....ppl like him becuz he is a ppl person, that does not matter if you don't plan to be his friend.
The tests are hard but if you go to the SI sessions and study, the tests are manageable. Out of the three professors, from what I've heard he is the best.
Hands down great teacher. Loved his class. His lectures went a bit fast, but if I had reviewed before, I would have understood. Just make sure to go over his notes before the test and learn the main concepts and you'll do well. It was my easiest A.
Dr. March is a very funny teacher and his lectures are interesting. You will do well in the class if you go to SI and do the online HW. There are some short answers on the tests that are somewhat ticky though, if you read/skim the chapters that will be on the test, you'll get the short answers.
Wonderful teacher. He honestly loves what he is doing. Convinced me chemistry is fun. I even changed my major.
I absolutely loooove this guy!!! it should be impossible to fail his class. he pretty much lays it all out there for u!
Dr. March is an incredible teacher. He is by far the best intro chemistry professor and will instill a sense of the science in you for the rest of your life. He cares about each student, and if you do well in his class he will remember your face and name when you run into him around campus. He's very approachable, and grades very fairly. Study Hard
he is good
Awesome teacher!!! Just pay attention and the class was my easiest A!!! TAKE DR MARCH IF YOU CAN!!! OR...you will regret it! Great guy!
Amazing teacher! He's probably the toughest out of all of the one's offered but is by far the best. I 100% recommend him!
Wonderful professor! He knows how to teach and is good at answering questions from students. Very friendly guy. You will regret it if you don't take his class.
Pretty good teacher, explains material fairly well. Try to do the in-class practice, write notes (online too). Attend SI! If not, then do the posted worksheets. PRACTICE problems, even if you paid attention and read, you won't be fully prepared for tests unless you work out several problems.
Super teacher who helps the student. His tests are fair and he cares about the student. He is willing to reward extra effort. Go to recitation!
Warning- he's the Dr. Cusic of the chem department, so if you're not willing to study, think critically, or go to SI, you won't do too well. But he will give tons of extra points for recitation and although he assigns lots of homework, the practice is worth it. Take him if you're willing for a challenging but awesome chem class.
Literally the most unclear teacher of ANYTHING!!! The mock exams are nothing like the test.
If you aren't good at Chemistry you will have a very tough time in his class. He doesn't explain things very easily, and his tests are killer. He's a really nice guy though, so his class his bearable. Be prepared to study A LOT
If you come to class and pay attention to lecture and do the homework, there is no way you shouldn't be able to make the grade you want. He's willing to take the time outside of class to help clarify anything, even the morning of the test. If you use the homework to learn rather than to just get it done, you will be prepared for the tests.
Tests are KILLER! March is such a nice guy though his class is enjoyable. Study like crazy. I couldn't keep up. Made a B. He wont bump but is good about giving out a couple extra points here and there.
Read your book. Go through the slides and make sure you understand how to do the problems from class. He's one of the best professors in the chemistry department. And go through those old exams before the test. Frequent his office if you have questions. He's very helpful.
Challenging, but one of the best professors I've ever had in college. Not an easy A; you have to work for the A you want. I'd recommend him to anyone.
Dr. March is a phenomenal professor. He should be the ideal standard for all of UAB's faculty. The course is not an "easy A." There are a lot of homework problems each week, but you have all week to complete each chapter. Read the chapters and his notes. He tells you important things in class! Visit his office for clarification, but attend S.I.!
Labs are weird and non corrilational to the class.
His class is easy if you do what everything he tells you to and pay attention in class.
doesn't respond to emails and has no enthusiasm for chemistry. stay away
Great professor, has great knowledge of chemistry and explains things very clearly. Tells you exactly what you need to do in order to succeed. Class is not difficult as long as you study and apply yourself. The lab, which is taught by a teacher's assistant, is terrible though. Lab activities do not have anything to do with classroom lessons.
Great class, great professor. He knows what he is talking about. do the homework to learn and not just to get it over with and you will do fine. Study before hand. Tests are from the notes and book, nothing too hard.
This course is fairly difficult if you don't put the necessary time and effort into it, but Dr. March is very helpful if you apply yourself and ask when you need help. Do not, however, expect him to teach everything in a meeting just because you haven't done your part outside of class. Attend lectures, study, go to SI, read the chapters in the textbook, do your homework-- do what you should do-- and an A should be easy to earn.
The only reason I did well in this class is because I'm naturally good at chemistry. His powerpoints are super confusing. I really had to get accustomed to this guy's style of teaching.
Dr. March is an amazing professor who truly cares about his students. His tests are difficult, but if you study, there is no reason you shouldn't make an A.
If you study, study, study, then his class is not bad. I enjoyed his class! Go to SI, ask for help, do OWL homework, read the textbook, then his tests are a breeze! Lab is absolute HELL though.
Dr. March is a very good lecturer. He makes sure that his students know the material before moving on and also pushes for group studying. He also sometimes gives bonus points and his tests are fair. If you study and make the extra effort to understand than an A is very possible. Also, he goes through all math examples in class.
Attendence isn't take every day, but when it is, it counts. Weekly homework isn't hard, just make sure you do it.
I was struggling in the class and trying to meet with Dr. March. He would never take time to reply to my emails. I could never make his office hours and told him that but he would not cooperate to meet up with me outside his office hours. His class is hard you will have to study a lot make sure to come to class to get easy participation points.
He was a very hard teacher, in my opinion. I did very good in 115 with Patterson. If you are considering taking March for Spring, wait till the Fall and take Patterson.
Dr. March is a good teacher, but sometimes it seems that he makes class harder than necessary. It is very easy to tell that he is extremely knowledgeable. He doesn't always respond to emails. Even though the class was tough, I felt very well prepared for the standardized ACS final.
Dr. March is a very smart man, but he does not go over topics very clearly. He also speeds through his power points. He does give easy extra credit opportunities, but not enough to really help you.
His lectures can be a little confusing but he is willing to help you out. Homework due every Sunday or every other Sunday and it really boosts your grade as does participation with iClickers. He gave extra credit both semesters I had him but the tests are difficult and much more in depth that what's discussed in class.
Had him for both Gen chem 1 and 2. Make sure to attend class, because you get easy points from the iClicker. The tests are pretty difficult. The average for the tests usually hang around a 75. They are usually in the form of 18 MC and 2 or 3 free response questions. He offers EC. If you do all EC you can earn about 17 points to your point total.
Great teacher, makes chemistry interesting. But he is tough. He often teaches really complex things then says "this won't be covered on the exam." Or he'll teach too many things for one exam, so it's hard to know where to study. He goes over all the math& processes, but his tests are really conceptual. DO HW & GO TO CLASSRECITATION,EASY POINTS!!!
Dr. March is a very smart man and he's very passionate about chemistry. I found that sometimes he had a hard time communicating that to his students. His exams are extremely tricky and his power points are very confusing. I was always lost during lecture. Most of what I learned from gem chem came from owl. Do the homework & go to class!
Tough professor. He evidently loves the material he teaches, but you will grow tired of hearing, "take your note about this now." He will teach you everything, but not directly tell you what to take notes of -- if that makes sense. He will make you earn that A, and it won't be easy!
Gives informative and entertaining lectures. Really emphasizes the things you need to know for tests. There is clicker participation in class, if you don't go to class it will hurt. His tests are very hard and designed to trick you "if" you don't really know the material. Do all the online homework, go to class, study study study.
He is really good at making topics that are hard to grasp more clear. If you do the OWL assignments and show up to (and participate in) recitation this class is easy to pass. You have to commit to making an A though.
I LOVED this class. The lectures can be boring at times, but he tries to make it entertaining when he can. The tests are easy if you pay attention in class and study some. The grading scheme really helps your grade out. If you pay attention in class and do the homework (owl), you will do just fine.
Dr. March was a great teacher. Lectures are pretty long and can get boring, but he knows what he is talking about and genuinely cares about his students.
Dr. March was great! Not the easiest class ever but totally doable.
Dr. March is a really good teacher, chemistry is just impossible to wrap my brain around so I failed big time.
I have a strong background in Chemistry so this class was more of a review for me. His lectures were pretty good most of the time. "Talk to your neighbor"-March 2016
One of my favorite professors! Really great overall, but you have to put in the effort.
Dr. March is a very smart man, unfortunately he is not a very considerate or respectful. In fact, he was extremely rude to myself, and others reported he was rude to them as well. If you don't mind disrespectful instructors, then Dr. March is perfect for you.
My dream is to have Dr. March as my Chemistry professor for the rest of my college experience. He is thorough and tough, but he also shows an active interest in his students and the material. I promise that if you participate in class, review his notes, attend recitation, and ask questions, then you should end up with a great grade.
Dr. March is a very good teacher. However, he makes you work. Don't expect tons of extra credit or tests to be curved 20 points like the other chem teachers. His tests can be kind of tricky at times but if you pay attention in class and don't just rush through the owl homework to get it done then you can do well in this class.
He is very selective and is only nice and helpful to some of the students. Dont expect anything more than class lecture and a grade at the end of the semester.
Dr. March is a great man. It speaks levels about him that he has lunch at the Commons with his students and that he is very accessible to students in and out of lecture. However, his teaching style is terrible. He will present a giant slide, then say "So yeah: take a note on *that*." Well Dr. March, what is "that"? Great person, meh professor.
March is great. His lectures are typically interesting and he posts his power points online. He gives a lot of extra credit, but his tests can be hard. I've only used the textbook for one thing. I typically tried to learn the concepts from the homework and just review them in class. That worked well for me.
He is a good teacher just that he's very fast paced. I actually didn't have a chance to attend SI because of my other classes but I heard it's beneficial. He offers some extra credit in the beginning and the end of the course. What I didn't like though is he teaches you and is humorous but he goes into a topic thinking you know everything.
Dr. March is the BEST. Absolutely my favorite professor this semester. His tests are tricky, but study hard and you will do well. Go to his office hours!
Great teacher, good class to take if Chemistry isn't your best subject. He's funny, so his lectures aren't bad. Participation matters, so go to class. HW is helpful in learning the material. Tests can be difficult if you don't study hard. Don't buy the textbook, the online access code includes a digital copy. Do the work & study- you should do well
He gives you no time to ask questions and is quite condescending if you ask. His exams are easy to compensate for his limited capabilities, but does not prepare you for the ACS.
My favorite thing about Dr. March is that he recognizes the fact the we, as students, have other classes. He is willing to move tests a date or two to compensate for that. He tells you exactly what is on the exams. As long as you study for the tests and take decent notes, there is no reason you shouldn't get an A.
Dr. March has been one of my favorite professors by far. He makes sure that you engage with others during class and he explains the material well. He taught chemistry on a different level. I walked into the class hating science, and left the class adding a chemistry minor.
Solid Professor. You have to put a lot into the class, but he clearly outlines expectations. Tests are tough, so pay close attention to his powerpoints. Very open to questions and genuinely cares about his students. One of the best Professors at UAB in my opinion!
Great teacher. He knows how to get the material into your head. This isn't the easiest class but he makes it enjoyable. Always cracking jokes and tells stories. Nevertheless he teaches you the material. You will have to read the notes, sometimes the book, and pay attention in class. he gives bonus.
I had Hamilton for CH115 and March for CH117. Even with the prep of APChem, March's class still wasn't easy. He goes at a pretty steady pace; however, in the harder topics you may struggle to stay on top of the info. He really knows his material so ask if you have questions. Study PPTs and the LENGTHY OWLs for the hard tests: MC and short answer.
So good. Professor March was simply amazing. Even in a class of a 180 people, he makes each and every one of us think about the concepts so that we don't just end up memorizing blind facts. Paying attention in class was not hard since his lectures are so very engaging. 10/10 would recommend.
Wonderful man. Listens to your questions and wants to help you understand. Willing to open doors for office hours. Extra credit. Fun personality, laughs a lot
Most of the chem was remembering but he taught it so well I thought I re-learning. He is an amazing professor.
He is an amazing professor compared to others who teach this course. He is very straight forward on what he expects you to know for his exams. He is always open for meetings in his office. When he teaches he really breaks it down and will take time to help make sure you understand. I will take him again for chem 2
March is your go-to professor for Chemistry. Chemistry is a hard course, however, March makes it 110% doable. Attendance does matter using an iClicker and is part of your grade so show up to class for easy points. He does drop your lowest exam grade and replaces it with the final if you did better on the final. He truly wants everyone to do well
Dr. March is a great professor. He really wants everyone to succeed in chemistry. Tests are multiple choice and short answer. Definitely will be taking again.
Great lectures. Kept me interested even at 8 am! Pretty easy tests. All around a good professor!
Dr. March is the perfect chemistry teacher and never fails to keep you engaged. Makes the seemingly scary chemistry course very doable and not near as dreaded. 11/10 would recommend!!!!!!
Chemistry is a hard class in general. You have to put in the work. He makes it simple and explains the concepts. The key is: paying attention in class, taking notes, going to SI classes, and seeing him after class so he can be familiar with you. He even helped me with lab. Dont be shy!
Willing to help students when they need to pass. Gave a few extra credit opportunities in both CH 115 and 117. He teaches the material well, the course itself is just difficult. Show up for class and do your homework and it will make a letter grade difference. Funny dude.
I took him for Gen Chem 1 & 2, and was able to make an A in both because of his generous policies. He makes a very tough subject doable and really wants everyone to succeed. Make sure you do the OWL homework, it almost cost me a letter grade.
Material is tough for both 115 and 117, but if you've taken AP Chem and did well on it, the class will be a snooze. Dr. March is very approachable. The is lots of point padding (clicker/OWL/recitation). Show up to class to get the clicker points. Some odd test questions sometimes, but he will drop a question if everyone missed it.
Dr. March is amazing! Wish I was able to take him again he's worth taking.
Dr. March is so easy to get along with and his class is honestly very manageable if you do the work. Show up to class for clicker points, take good lecture notes, & do your OWL assignments (ON TIME) and you should be fine. His test questions can throw you off sometimes, but sometimes he just gives us those points if he makes a mistake.
Dr. March is THE BEST chem teacher at UAB. You have plenty of chances to do well in his class. He gives extra credit (more than once in the semester), you get credit for going to recitation, points for the OWL, clicker questions, he replaces the lowest test grade with the final (if it helps you), and gives exam recovery points! Just go to class!
Dr. March is an excellent professor. He engages with the students are cares a lot about our success. I do not like chemistry, but he makes it interesting. The OWL homework really helps for the tests, and the book just has the harder way to do things. Tests are easy and he provides mock exams.
Amazing Professor. He is so funny, and not to mention he ACTUALLY teaches you the material!
Dr. March was awesome! Hes passionate and even better in office hours. The only thing I dislike is the OWL homework, its so confusing. He teach the easy material really slow and zooms pass the challenging stuff. But hes better than the other chem professors and I know this because I sat in all of their lectures.
Dr. March is really funny. His tests aren't that difficult, just take your time reading the questions thoroughly. The OWLs could be a little difficult at times, but definitely manageable. He was also willing to push back deadlines on multiple occasions. He is a great guy, and his lectures usually come with funny historical lessons!
Dr. March taught the class well, and his lectures made difficult topics more simple by the way he broke them down. He does give bonus opportunities during class, so whatever grade you receive after your final is what you get because he doesn't round. There is lots of homework, but the practice is necessary because the tests are challenging.
Dr. March is a very good professor. My suggestion to those who haven't taken him yet is to try to talk to him during his office hours because it shows that you really care about the class and his lectures. For me, just showing up helps you get that A and definitely GO TO THE SI SESSIONS PROVIDED. They help a lot even before taking the test.
Dr. March was so wonderful. He loves his job and tries to make chemistry as interesting as he can with personal stories and jokes. If you put in the work you will get out what you need and he offers many chances to make up missed points. As long as you go to 70% of the lectures you get full attendance points for the semester. Great prof and class!
Dr. March gives a lot of online homework, and he grades attendance by in-class participation on "clicker questions," so you can't really slack in this class and expect an A. Still, his lectures are great, his tests are fair, and he clearly enjoys his material. Plus, he gives a decent amount of bonus, so the class is tough but totally doable.
His lectures are really good, though he got a little confusing towards the end of the semester. Still, he is probably the best teacher I have gotten for chemistry. I wish he gave actual feedback on tests
Dr. March's lecture and notes are not as detailed, but I find his tests to be fairly easy. As usual, he has clicker points and gives credit for OWL and recitation bonus points. So it's not difficult to make a good grade in his class. If you want to learn some chem and have easy tests, Dr. March is the way to go.
Lots of chances to boost your grade. Attendance is kinda mandatory since he uses iclicker but the way he does it, it isnt a huge deal to miss a few classes if needed. SI worksheets help to study for the test and if you do what youre supposed to to prepare, youll do fine.
Great teacher, great lecturer and amazing guy. There are also a lot of resources to succeed in this class which include recitation, tutors and SI (especially Tristan). Go to class, do the homework, keep good notes, try the old exams he gives out and you'll be more than fine!
Class is easy overall. No need to read book, just listen in class, take decent notes, and look at SI worksheets. At times, he rushes through difficult material, but that probably means that its not very essential for the test. Make sure that you can do SI mock exams without looking at notes and you will do fine on tests.
My favorite teacher for gen chem! I had erdmann for gen chem 1 and switched to march for gen chem 2 and It was honestly the best decision! He know how to teach the material in an easier way and his test are fairly more easier than erdmanns. I got A's in both but if you are between Erdmann and march, definitely choose march for that easier A
Dr. March is a funny guy and a great professor! He gives a lot of free points (homework, clicker questions that aren't graded for accuracy, & recitation) but you do have to come to class, actively participate, and study to get the grade you want. Make sure to utilize SI & March's old mock exams. March is definitely the better & easier choice!
I love Joe!! He is extremely fair because clicker points are a participation grade, you have a few attempts on OWL, and you can earn points back on your test grade. Hes funny and makes the class more enjoyable. His SI leaders are amazing, so definitely take advantage of that and old tests. Dont bother studying OWL or recitation worksheets.
He is a really great professor and I am definitely taking him again for gen chem 2.
He's an incredible professor and I definitely plan to take him for Gen Chem 2. He's funny and explains concepts really well, but also why you need to understand each thing. He does clicker questions throughout lecture to anonymously poll the class and ensure everyone is following. He also offers bonus opportunities throughout the semester.
Dr. March is my favorite professor at UAB. He is funny and engaging (even during an 8 AM lecture). He has very clear and reasonable expectations. Take Dr. March if you want to learn a lot about chemistry in an environment where you can easily get help if needed.
Really cool guy and good professor. The class is hard if you dont show up and you dont consistently study but overall good class
Dr. March is a cool professor. Attendance is mandatory, but you won't regret showing up to lecture. Dr. March has a quirky sense of humor, and he always has an interesting chemistry "history" lesson. He knows what he is talking about, and he is an excellent choice!
March was very clear to the point in his lectures. Attendance is needed for Clicker Points, but it's still beneficial to go to understand gen chem truly. OWLs were a lot harder for CH117 than CH115, because it's more math and very tedious. BUDGET YOUR TIME!
Dr. March is seriously one of the nicest professors I have had. His lectures are always entertaining and the material isn't really that complicated. Dr. March also offers TONS of outside help and resources to make sure you succeed in his class.
Dr. March is the best professor I've had thus far. CH 115 is a generally difficult course, but Dr. March cares about his students and is very passionate about what he teaches. He gives many opportunities for students to boost their grades, such as giving up to 50 points for participating in class. I highly recommend him for CH155 and CH117!!
He was a decent teacher at best. He barely taught any of the material (basically expected us to know everything already). We had to teach ourselves the material. He just wasnt a good teacher.
Dr. March is definitely the harder of the two Introductory Chem professors, but he is the more thorough professor. He is funny, knowledgeable, and genuinely enjoyable during lectures, but his exams are much harder than contemporaries. If you care about learning gen chem thoroughly, which may be beneficial, and can handle harder exams, choose him.
March is a great guy but his work is HARD. Chem is not an easy class but his exams are going to be very difficult. He is pretty reasonable with grading but just be ready for the level of difficulty. He explains the material really well. Gives lots of homework. Make sure you pay attention in lectures and practice chem!!!
Did not feel I was prepared for any of the test. Flies by material and spends time talking about material not going to be on the exam.
Dr. March is an amazing professor. I had never really had chemistry before, so I definitely had to work for my grade. However, Dr. March made the class entertaining, and the extra-credit options he offered were appreciated during this difficult time. Make sure to do your homework and take advantage of extra-credit opportunities when they come up.
Dr. March is a truly caring professor. He doesnt spoon feed you material, you have to be willing to connect the missing pieces. If you have good study habits and take advantage of extra credit youll be just fine. Also practice the owls and go to SI to definitely succeed!
Be careful with how you balance getting the homework done and you should be great! His lectures are amazing and he helps with any questions! Some things may be confusing, but the OWL HW helps that! Great course and professor, and many extra credit oppurtunities
This class is challenging but an easy A bc he gives so much extra credit and even replaced our lowest test grade. Do the OWL hw and SI mock exams to study for exams. Attendance was optional during COVID so I usually just watched the recordings. He offered a cumulative exam that could only help your grade. He is very kind and understanding.
Dr. March is fantastic. He explains things so well and there were a lot of opportunities for extra credit. Go to recitation, he gave a bonus for going to every recitation and it helps. Chem is just hard for me and I got a B. His homework isn't too hard. He recorded and uploaded all his lectures so you could rewatch them to study (COVID season)
Easy A. Just make friends with some scitechs or Greeks to get old exams and your gold for lecture and lab
Dr. March was an amazing chemistry professor. He always did what was best for his students and listened to their feedback. I took this class entirely on Zoom, and he still made the concepts as clear as day. He is exceptionally organized, and I cant recommend him enough to anyone familiar or not with intro chem at UAB.
very good chem teacher. class is test heavy as far as assignment weight, but he is very fair in test material and gives good extra credit opportunities. One of the few prof's this semester who is understanding of the difficulty of online learning for students. Attend lecture and do mock exams and hw on time and you will get a good grade.
I had Dr. March for CH115 during fall 2020 (all virtual because of COVID). After exams, if I was unhappy with my grade, I would schedule office hours and he was very receptive and took my concerns into view when deciding whether to read or not. He is really funny and would recommend, just make sure to pay attention in lecture and do the OWLs.
Dr. March is super helpful during office hours if you have any questions, and is always looking to help students out when he can. The class is difficult, but if you do the homework, go to the lectures, do mock exams, and study a little bit, you will be fine! You only need the textbook access code to access the homework.
Poor reviews here reflect the reviewer more than Dr. March. Watch/attend lectures, do the hw on time, watch out for bonus, and for the love of God do the mock exams. The mock exams are a blessing. Do the math again and again and pay attention to what he says about theory/concepts. He's approachable if you need extra help and he genuinely cares.
Didn't have the best experience. Easy to get off topic. I basically taught myself through the OWL homework. My grade was saved by recitation and homework.
Highly recommend Dr. March. Go to class and do your homework and recitation and you will do fine. He really cares about his students and has a good sense of humor. Lots of bonus as well. Wish he taught all the chemistry classes!
Awesome professor and just an awesome guy in general. Genuinely cares about what he does and wants students to pass. Plenty of extra credit opportunities and ways to study for exams. Funny, respected, and willing to help. Chem will never be easy but definitely take this prof if you want the best experience possible. So much respect for this guy.
Great professor and loves to interact with the students. Took him when COVID hit and classes were over zoom. Definitely pay attention in lecture. If you need him to solve something again, just ask, he'll do it again and slower if you need it. Homework and Recitation grades can give you a B even if you do poorly on every test.
Dr. Marchs chem class is easy. He wants his students to do well and gives a lot of extra credit. Hes not the best at explaining things to where students can understand sometimes, but there are lots of other ways you will learn (recitation, homework). If youre decent in chemistry/math youll do fine.
Dr. March is the best professor you will have at UAB. He is a great lecturer and makes sure his lectures are always interesting. He incorporates humor into his lectures and it helps keeps his students engaged. His tests are not difficult if you do all of the homework and do the mock exams. If you have a chance to take his class, please do it!!
Dr March is super nice and funny. His lectures go pretty fast though, so if you haven't taken chem in high school, you might have to study after class. Homework is on OWL and can be tedious. Tests were online this semester and can be a little difficult, but passable. There were tons of EC options. I'm taking him again for CH 117.
Honestly one of my favorite professors. He is a great professor and I would take him again. 10/10
If you don't mind a fast-paced class he is your professor. However, if you like to go into detail about what you learn I wouldn't recommend him. He has never answered an email of mine and when I scheduled an appointment with him he did not help me at all even though he knew my circumstance. His quizzes are hard.
I liked Dr. March, he gave us extra credit and there were plenty of opportunities to raise your grade in chemistry such as SI, Tutoring, and Recitation. Dr. March stayed on top of things and was overall great. He may have been a little fast at times in lecturing but in all, we knew everything we needed to get a good grade on the ACS.
Dr. March is wonderful. His lectures are fun, but they can be fast paced. Class often involves talking with the people around you, so it's very engaging. His quizzes are straightforward. The online homework isn't too heavy, but it can be tedious to do. He prepares you well for the final exam. There are also lots of extra credit opportunities.
I like Dr. March. His class is lecture heavy and you have to practice a good bit on your own, but I guess that is expected with Gen Chem. I think that he is the best chemistry professor at UAB, but for sure harder. I am taking Gen Chem 2 in the Spring. 8 tests, bi-weekly homework, recitation mandatory, decent bonus, final not heavily weighted
Lectures easy to understand. Quizzes/Exams every other week are the main part of the class's difficulty, but usually they aren't as hard as the OWL HW, so if u practice with the HW u should be good.
Dr. March was a great professor and obviously cared about students. There was pre-lecture tests for extra credit for each chapter which helps boost your final grade. Unfortunately the final is standardized but the curve is really generous.
Dr. March does a good job of conducting lectures, allowing students to discuss questions in class. As long as you attend recitation and do the assigned homework, you should be fine. The quizzes are manageable, some of them harder than others. However, we received a lot of extra credit opportunities that helped.
Good lectures. Lots of collaborating with other students which helps you learn the material. OWL Homework is super helpful. Attend the recitations and do all the bonus pre-lecture quizzes for a good grade boost. The final is also scaled a lot.
I took Dr. March for Gen Chem 2 after having another professor for Gen Chem 1. I would definitely recommend taking him for both classes because it was hard to adjust to his fast paced lectures. Pay attention in class because he works out problems that usually show up on the test. He really does try to simplify concepts to help his students.
A lot of people liked his lecture/teaching style, I personally did not tho. He is not bad, he just was not for me. He was better than my Chem 1 prof however, so I do recommend taking him. His quizzes are not super hard, but some questions were just like wtf. Even after getting a couple C's on quizzes I still managed to get a high A so he is good.
I enjoyed March less this semester than I did last. His teaching style did not work with the material as well. The tests were okay, but there were several instances where he didn't correct issues in his tests. He does provide opportunities to get points with recitation, homework, and extra credit, so it is easy to get a good grade if you work.
he is a great professor but goes fast, make sure to be engaged in the lesson. will help you if you're lost. be well rested when going to this class
The lectures he gives are really fast and hard to understand. However, he gives the tools to succeed and if you utilize them it is not impossible to get an A. Good professor
Dr. March is a good professor, sometimes goes through lectures really fast and sometimes slow. He tells stories during his lecture, which make them less long. Make sure to go to recitation and participate in class.
Dr. March is a heavily overrated professor. There have been times I have completed homework with ease only to go to his lecture and become immensely confused about the same topic. You would be better off just not going to his lectures but he makes attendance mandatory. You're better off teaching yourself. He promises bonus but does not deliver.
Dr. March is a great teacher and speaker, I would listen to a TEDtalk of his. Honors chem only has 4 tests and no quizzes which makes it harder to get a good grade. He also likes to make complicated short answer questions focused on concepts instead of the basic material. I plan on taking him again, but not honors just due to the grading setup.
Joe March is a wonderful professor who is invested in the success of his students. He makes every lecture fun and interesting, and is always willing to answer questions. He also encourages students to contact him if they have any issues with grades. If you pay attention and dedicate time and effort into the course, you will be successful.
Dr. March is a great professor! Be prepared that his lectures move at a fast pace. However, if it feels like the materials are confusing, he will take the time out to explain and clarify. If put efforts into his class, it's possible to get an A. Overall, his lectures are very entertaining. Definitely will be taking him again for gen chem 2.
He is a great professor if you like Chemistry. If you like to take it slow, I would choose another professor. Awesome guy and easy to listen to, but talks fast and explains as if we are all chemists already. He is a great professor that cares, but I would have chosen another professor personally since he is fast paced and offers less bonus points.
Barely any extra credit, goes extremely fast during lecture and expects you to remember everything from gen Chem 1. Do not take if you have even a little struggle with Chem. No dropped test either. Averaged with the rest so if you do bad on two then it drops your grade.
Dr. March spent considerable time in class making sure concepts were understood. He always had a story to relate to whatever concepts were being taught, which helped me form a better connection with the content. While lectures were fast, take good notes and you should be fine!
Took his class for 115 and again for 117! The contents and notes being tested are based on what he lectures so attend class sessions. Overall structure of classic is very straightforward. Amazing and understanding professor!
Dr. March's courses offer lots of extra credit and are structured in a format where a student who works hard and is learning will get an A in the course. He will even bump students if they are on the border. His lectures are amazing, probably better than any YouTube or Khan Academy video. Tests are very fair and the class could not be better.
Chemistry is hard in general to me but he was a good professor. Take seriously that for every 1 hour of class, you should be studying 2 hours outside. Overall good professor and he loves his job
Going to the lectures is important and also he gives a lot of extra credit so it is hard for you to fail as long as you study and put in the work.
Lots of outside grades such as homework, attendance and recitation
Excellent professor, very fun to listen to during lectures. There is a quiz each chapter and the final is the ACS chemistry exam. Participation through the iClicker app is important and a part of your grade. OWL homework is given, but you can easily get full credit as long as you do the work. The class is not terribly difficult to do well in.
If there was a way to describe doctor march, I would say he is above the chemistry department at UAB. If he was ever in danger I would stand in the front lines to protect him, in order for my fellow future gen chem students to have him as a professor. I love this man, I am so sad this is my last semester having him as my professor.
March is probably the best Chem professor at UAB and is a great resource for freshman STEM students. CHEM115 is rather easy, but he makes it even more easier and explains all the topics really well. Exams aren't bad, but you should spend at least 2-3 days studying. Even if you don't do that well, he offers a lot of point to make it up.
Dr. March is one of the best professors I've taken at UAB so far. He is very knowledgeable on the material that he teaches and he ensures that all of his students understand the material before moving on to a new topic. His coursework is not too bad and he understands that we have other classes other than Gen Chem so he is very flexible.
Had Dr. March for Gen Chem I and II and definitely enjoyed the class. The hw is time consuming but doable and the quizzes were not too difficult if you review the powerpoints while the ACS final is extremely easy.
One of the best professors at UAB, in my opinion. Had him for Honors Gen Chem 1 and 2, really enjoyed him in both classes. Tells real-world stories to make chemistry applicable, explains in-depth and well, genuinely enjoys teaching and cares about what students think.
Hes so so easy just take him
Dr. March was really good! I took him in the summer for Gen Chem II, and I'm so glad I did. He was so straightforward and made it simple to know what was going to be on assessments. He was my favorite Gen Chem professor!
Love this guy
If you have to take chem, take Dr. March. He's entertaining and knows his stuff. He is helpful, so go to office hours if youre confused. He's very likeable and his grading is reasonable. I took Honors Gen Chem I, but if i could go back I would take regular. 125 is only tests (no quizzes) and has a group presentation. Otherwise its the same.
G.O.A.T professor. He teaches extremely well and is really funny during his lectures. Everything on his PPTs are on his quizzes and he tells you what he's going to put on the quiz a few days before the first quiz opens. Go over the questions on his quizzes the day before final, and that's an easy 100+. His quizzes tend to be 10-12 questions though.
He is nice, and this class is kinda mid. Not too hard but not too easy. You must do lots of homework but it worth.
Funny guy and decent professor. If you learned chem/honors chem in high school this info will be review: follow along in lectures and you won't have to review outside of it. He goes fast and doesn't really explain complex topics, so if you haven't taken chem you'll need YouTube because asking him questions might leave you feeling more confused.
I liked Dr. March, he is hilarious and very knowledegable in chemistry. Quizzes are difficult and homework takes FOREVER, so don't think you have a lot of free time. He doesn't make the final but it is easier than the quizzes IMO. Overall good teacher.
Dr. March is actually retiring at the end of this semester so the ratings won't really matter anymore. Dr. March's lectures were very fast paced and he expects you to know stuff from gen. chem I so he won't go back over those things. There were 6 quizzes, 1 midterm, and a final exam and he often gives you a week in advance to study. offerstinybonus
RIP :( :( :(
Dr. March is genuinely an amazing professor. He explains difficult concepts very well and cares about student learning. He will be missed!
