Dr. Mirando is an outstanding instructor who upholds the academic standards that every university should have. He is always willing to help with the comprehension of his lessons.
the guy needs to be more organized with his lesson plans. from day one he expects work to reflect everything in the text - and marks down your grade for things he hasn't even taught at that point in the semester. he doesn't explain things well either.
Although there was not much to this class, he could've at least TAUGHT, rather than list the info on the board for us to memorize. And he does, at his discretion, count off for items he has yet to cover.

Dr. Mirando has a severe God complex, anything that he does not control is wrong. He's known to be unforgivably rude to students through written and verbal coorespondence. He will never understand that respect must be earned - it's not a perk of the Ph.D
Dr. Mirando is definitely tough at first; however, if you're willing to do the work, you will get an A and you will learn the material.

I had a difficult time understanding some of the material, but the professor invited consultation during his office hours. Gave me an opportunity to catch up on what I did not understand.

Poor Quality Teacher
Does not teach...gives editorials. The on ly way to get a decent grade is to agree with his ramblings.
He's got tenure so basically he can do whatever he wants. Just be prepared to work hard, but thats what your supposed to do anyway...
he freaking sucks as a teacher...He gives you quizes based on the text book but his lectures totally different...and on his quizes, more than one answer may be "right" but you have to pick the "best answer." he thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread!
Never a dull moment
most horrible teacher-no point to the class-unclear-cant speak to save his life-thinks hes freakin awesome-completely worthless-no good info-should take this class online

Class was very interesting, Mirando is entertaining
He sucks in Comm 101, but i heard he is cool for other comm classes. i havent had him again yet, but i will have him for 198 so i will see for myself. I got an A in Comm 101, but he is very unclear and i had to teach myself basically. To me, he comes off as being very rude, espically in e-mails
I really hated going to this class. He never had anything interesting to say and he always had a bad attitude about everything. Unfortunately he is the only professor that teaches this class and two others and that sucks!!!
Mirando is the biggest hypocrit! He assumes the position of leader without fufilling the role. And his fat hiney has the nerve to implement rules -- don't come to class late -- that he doesn't even follow himself. And when was the last time he's written a newspaper article? His teachings are outdated and SLU's journalism program suffers!

Very good teacher. Long-winded. Knows what he's talking about. Tests were very hard. Assignments are a pain in the ass.

It took me awhile to really appreciate the man. But, when you leave his class, you actually learn something. Very challenging.
The only thing cool about Mirando is his beard. He's got a wierd eye, so it makes it hard to discern who he's talking to. It is hard to ask a question without having the fear of getting your head bit off. If you leave his class with a smile on your face, you must be trippin on acid. Misery loves company-So if you love misery take one of his classes
Also, Mirando doesn't respect other opinions. He'll use sarcasm and belittle you when you try to make an intelligent point that disagrees with his conventional thinking. The only thing you learn from Mirando is how to be opinionated. He really doesn't teach journalism needed in today's media world. Join his beloved Press Club to better your grades.
He doesn't know anything about what he teaches, except some antiquated rules of journalism. Avoid him or else fail his classes.
Why is he still teaching? He doesn't cover subjects he puts on tests and he rants off the subject like an old coot. He never discusses current events and chooses to pick topics for discusson from two and three years ago. Talk about current topics darn it! Very BORING!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
He may appear rough around the edges, but he honestly is an amazing professor and person. When it comes to your senior year in COMM, you WILL have to take him. He cares a great deal about his students as to what others may say. He puts his heart into his classes. If you are respectful, do your work & participate in class you will be successful.
I have never gone to a class and been that bored..he does not know what he is talking about, and is very degrading..avoid taking him...
Had him for 2 semesters now. First I thought he was crazy but now I truly think he has a good heart. I think he has lighted up a lil this semester. He demands respect in his class. I don't see anything wrong with that. Like it or not if your a comm major you will end up with him. You will most likely have a 10pg paper and 4 literature ass.
Mr. Mirando is pretty abrasive at first. He's really a good guy. I think he likes being dreaded. I dislike his teaching style, and I really dislike the courses he teaches, but they are a necessary evil. It doesn't matter what you think of him, you still have to take him because he owns the Comm department. Good luck.
This guy sucks! Condesending. See's all students equal to worms. Don't recommend him at all. Wait of money and should be dismissed for the institution. Several older students have complained about his methods.
Awful class. In a classroom of 125 students, he wispers and expects you to comprehend what he is saying. If there is a student who is caughing you can forget the class. Good-luck following your grades through the semester because he doesn't bother to grade them. For scholars, you wont be able to maintain a 4.0 in this class. Change Major!
Subjects presented are clear. Guest speakers are very interesting and informative. Beware of assessments, you may get the grades on them 10 days prior to final exam, disallowing self improvement. I don't recommend him, however, he is required and the department offers no other professor teaching this class, to date. Content of class is important.
This is a criticism course and basically we're constantly criticizing media and journalist as profession. As, long as you agree with him, you'll do fine. I'm sure thats what the people did in this course, who recieved an "A." He seems like a pretty cool guy, but it's personal when he grades.
I put forth very little effort in this class, and still made an A. Just make sure you're there on time, every time, and your assignments are turned in on time as well. He's strict, but unavoidable if you're a comm. major, so you may as well get used to playing by his rules.
If you like to hear what is going on in class, DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN!!!! I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE HIM. This is a fair warning. Even if you sit in the front of the class you will not be able to hear him! So, unless you are a Comm major, or have to take him, DON'T DO IT TO YOURSELF!
I was very uninterested in this class from the beginning. I took it during the summer semester... big mistake. Every monday-thursday was a pain in the butt. To make matter worse, I had the class at 7:30 in the morning. It's just boring.
I thought he was uninteresting. Dr. Mirando was also very rude to the students. I would never ever recommend this professor to anyone.
Not as bad as everyone says he is. Class is only once a week and all assignments and tests for the whole semester are laid out in the syllabus. It's a class of 100+ students so I think it's just common sense that you should sit in the front if you want to hear.
He is not as bad as everyone thinks but he is pretty bad. He is rude to his students. Not helpful at all and its really ironic how he is the worst communicator ever but he teaches communications?!
This man is an exceptional teacher! I loved his class and he was very helpful. Everyone seems to dislike this man, but that is probably because they failed. I had no problem understanding Dr. Mirando and found him to be very interesting. He has a great personality, but you do have to complete all assignments. He's not an easy A, just a fun one
He is a great professor. I love him to death. Everytime I need some help he is always willing to provide guidance. Not an easy A but do your work and you will do fine.
If you do the required work and follow his directions on everything, his classes should be fairly easy. He is tough, you have to work for your A, but it's college, what can you expect? He is helpful outside of class, get to know him some, if you're a Comm major you have to get through him to graduate.
Totally thinks that students are attacking him. He just needs to lighten up. His lectures are a little hard to follow at times, but take good notes and do ALL the extra credit and assignments, and you'll do fine. The tests reflect the lectures. Read over your notes before each class because there is usually a short quiz on it at the beginning.

Teacher was exceptionally rude. Gave me As on every assignment tho. You will need to attend the Senior Colloquium.
Dr. Mirando is a good teacher. Yes he is hard but we are in college. He is extremely helpful and nice. I think people need to give him a chance. If you show him that you want to learn and do well in his class, he will help you in every way possible.
Joe Mirando is tough but recognizes hard work, maturity, and diligence
This class offers a great deal of pertinent info. Dr. Mirando's requirements are not extremely difficult, the man just knows what he wants and clearly states it. If a college level student cannot understand directions or adequately prepare themselves to further their education, they should reconsider whether college is right for them.
He is a horrible teacher with a terribly, unprofessional attitude. He uses profanity frequently during lectures and he does little to tell the students on how to write a editorial properly. He is cold and uncaring. In my opinion, HE SHOULD RETIRE!
Take this class N the summer. Everything is condensed, & the quicker U can finish w/Mirando, the better. He's not that bad N this class, but he's still a little stringent. Take good notes. Mostly all about precedents & court cases. Read the chapters. There's a daily quiz on it. Outlining helps. Start the paper early. Do ur legal briefs. Got an A.
Dr. Mirando is the best communication professor I have taken at Southeastern. He has real-world job experience and offers that knowledge directly to his students. Sure, there is a daily quiz from the assigned reading, but the book is fantastic for those interested in feature writing. Dr. Mirando cares about the subject and deserves a chance.
Dr. Mirando is by far the best professor at SLU. He's extremely learned and experienced in Communication, and he gives his classes his best. While his class can be diffucult, it is manageable, and his grading reflects how hard you worked and is fair.
unclear on assignments. Never out right says what is required of the class. Interrupts class for pointless reasons that really should not be called to attention and left until after class. lessons out of sequence with quizs. Could be a less absurd class if things made since. indeed it could be less stressful.
I can't begin to describe how unfair this teacher is. One example should do it. I had to do a reflection on peoples speeches. The first time I turned in 1 when I was supposed to turn in 3.Unfortunately I didn't know that. I thought that was fair though. However, next time I did all 3 with more content and comments. I received the same grade.
Almost inaudible - very difficult to hear. Notes are scattered and don't reflect test material. Not very efficient when communicating and grading is questionable. Knows the material but isn't an effective professor. Sad to say but it may be time to retire.
Do not take this class. He is difficult to hear, he has no compassion for students, rarely allows questions, gives no instruction, and is late to class on a weekly basis. He gives quizzes every week on full chapters and gives about ten seconds to answer from the moment he walks in. Definitely would not recommend.
his class isnt really hard. you do 5 speeches and take quizzes everyday, but you can just skim the chapter and pass. he made me hate this class. he is very long winded and talks about stuff no one cares about. also if you dont agree with his views he will yell at you. i dont recommend him at all.
I took 4 of his classes. If you participate in class and make yourself assertive, out spoken and stick around after class, you will do good.If you get to know him personally and speak up,it will be very helpful. He's not an easy A,but will make you feel like you've been taught.More than I can say for some teachers people seem to just love like Burns
I have hated his class since day 1. His teaching method is dry and he never actually makes time for participation, though he blames the class for the lack of commentating. He is horrible at public speaking and therefore should not be teaching it to students.
Mirando's the worst speech teacher I've had, he was really unlikable and he'd often argue with students just to look smart (I think he has a Napoleon complex). He'd grade really unfairly too IMO. He'll look for any reason to take points off. In a type of class where a friendly teacher is important Mirando's the worst you could possibly get.
Do not take this professor. Made the class SO much more difficult than need be. Constantly repeats himself and goes on and on about things no one cares about. Always has to be right. You have to take quizzes everyday on chapters in the book, and AFTER the quiz he teaches the chapter. MAKES NO SENSE. Do not recommend this teacher. Dropped his class.
This class is very hard. The only time offered is from 5-6:15pm. You have quizzes every class, so be prepared on your reading. The tests & exams are hard as well.
This class was pretty average. Most of the assignments are group projects, but you do have quizzes & tests. Read the material. His grading scale is dumb: It's either an A or F, no in between. It's the same in his 159 class as well. So, just read the material & take good notes.
THIS CLASS SUCKED. He expected a lot, he wasn't very fair, and speeches were either an A or an F. I dropped a letter grade because of my bangs in my eyes... Quizzes are EVERY DAY and its from anything in the chapter, so you have to study hard. Oh, and he taught the material AFTER the quiz. I hated this class with a passion, STAY AWAY.
Mirando by far is not an easy teacher. Do not be a comm major if you are not ready to put up with him. This 100 level class is supposed up be introductory, but it is far from it. I spent more time studying for this 1 hour class than any others. His grading scale sucks too you either get an A or and F on quizzes. The books are everything. Have fun!
Here's the thing with Mirando-- he's basically the bro you gotta get through to get to 498. He's the real test. He gives hand outs for everything with the format he wants on it. FOLLOW IT WORD FOR WORD and you will be fine. His tests are difficult, but know the cases & you'll be good. Mirando is a nice guy and a great teacher.
I took Dr. Mirando this semester and man this class is definetly not a walk in the park. You have quizzes every class that come from the textbook You have a 10 page paper that you must get started on early and follow the instructions. 3 tests that are really hard so study your butt off. This class is tough as nails, but if you study you will pass!
He is VERY rude, not helpful, and will NOT speak up. Do not try to ask him a question in class either.. I want so badly to make a good grade, but I'm afraid that will not be happening with this class. He is not clear about assignments either. This is my personal opinion.
If you can get away with not taking Dr. Mirando, by all means do it. He makes the first required class of a comm major the absolute hardest it has to be. He is NOT helpful and won't let you eat, drink or have your laptop in class. I didn't know I was still in high school. He talks barely above a whisper and expects you to be able to read his mind.
This man is literally the worst professor! He refuses to speak up loud enough for those in the back to hear (ironic considering he teaches comm) & he is looking for any excuse to deduct points or fail you. He gives assignments different from the ones on the syllabus to "test if you're listening" and he only gives A's or F's. Not helpful, avoid him!
I've taken Dr. Mirando for 159, 102, and 453. He is very passionate about the comm field. He can tell if you're just trying to bs your way out of working, and he doesn't like that at all. If you're a genuinely good student and hard working, study and go to class, you'll come out with good grades and great mentor.
He makes the intro to comm class way harder than it has to be. I hated every day I had to go to class. If you can avoid taking him for any class do so.
Sit in front for classes like 101. He does speak quietly and refuses to speak up. Assignments are on the syllabus (except 1 he changes to test if you are listening) so you can refer to that. He definitely knows what he is talking about and loves the comm major, but you better show up on time with perfect work or you will fail.
I thoroughly enjoyed his class. I think he's funny and has a passion for Communication. He has a no nonsense personality, but he is very nice. You have two quiz grades every class but they are not hard you just have to pay attention.
Dr. Mirando is the absolute best professor I have ever had. He is a hard ass, yes; but if you do your work and respect him, you will learn A LOT from him. People who don't appreciate him are just bad students...he gives you the grade he deserves. HE IS FAIR, COUNT ON THIS.
He is horrible! Avoid him at all costs!
Not terrible, but definitely not my favorite professor. He's overly picky with everything, and extremely dry in his teaching style. Your homework assignments are about things that you haven't gone over yet, which doesn't make any sense and is extremely frustrating. You just have to try harder than you normally think you would for an intro class.
Dr. Mirando is tough, but fair. He expects a lot from his students, but that's what being in college is for. Learning. He will help you in office hours if you go to him. Most other students don't like him, but I like him. He will help those who are willing to work hard. He doesn't baby his students which is good. I got an A in his class.
As long as you show up, take notes, and follow directions on all of your assignments you will be fine. Just do what he says and study the notes for the midterm and final even though they seem irrelevant to study.
I've taken Mirando before, but I one hundred percent regret taking him for this class. He starts and ends class late, and there are quizzes at the end of every class pertaining to a whole chapter. There is also a seperate assignment due every class period. Oh, and don't have water on your desk or you'll get an F for the day... It's ridiculous.
avoid. avoid. avoid.
WORST CLASS EVER!!! Worst professor I have ever had. Don't ask questions. Do not drink water. If you do, you get an F. This man made an 1 CREDIT HOUR class absolute hell. Do not take him. Do not take him. Change your major if you have to take this man's class.
Dr. Mirando is tough and may scare you at first, but it does get better. He expects you to be very independent, so do not except much help. If you attend class and take notes, you should be okay. Just stick it out.
I have taken Dr. Mirando for several classes. The first time I met him, I was very apprehensive about my major. I had to swallow my pride and remember that he knew more than I did.A genuinely great teacher and he upholds the standards that the real world expects from graduates. A real class act!
I've had Dr. M for multiple classes so far. All required and I've usually been able to get by him with a B or C but this class was my real test. This class is literally the standing point between me and graduating next semester and he made sure to make it as hard as humanly possible. He really is a great person but honestly a terrible teacher.
Make sure you read the Inside Reporters textbook before every class because he will call on every student to answer. KNOW your AP Stylebook as well because he will ask you to explain yourself. Gives out of class assignments but you have to earn anything above a C. Overall you will learn alot from this course and GO TO CLASS or its an F for the day.
Alright - Dr. Mirando is the most difficult prof I've ever had, but I've never learned so much in a class before either. You have to show up, and it takes a lot of work, but as long as you are a half-decent human he will help you pass. But if you're rude, he will gladly watch you burn. Don't listen to the gossip - Mirando is awesome.
This professor is the worst human being on the planet. He is mean, manipulative, and arrogant. I took three classes with him, and I barely made it through with my sanity in tact. If you can avoid his classes by any means, I highly suggest you do so. Thank god, I never have to take this massive sack of again. If I could give him a zero, I would.
First of all, he doesnt allow any liquids in his class. He gave me an F for the day because I had a closed water bottle on my desk. He is also late every single day but if you come in a minute late he will give you an F. His test dont make any sense and he doesnt describe what he wants very well. Do not take if you want a good grade.
I tried to give him a try again after I took him the 1st time. I tried to like him but he made it extremely difficult for no reason whatsoever. If you have the option to take someone else, do so. Hes the most arrogant & inconsiderate teacher ever. The 391 paper alone is unnecessary and lengthy & the most stressful part, even if you start early.
Yes he is strict BUT All of your assignments and due dates are given at the beginning of the semester, he also has a student example of each assignment uploaded on Moodle. He grades assignments quickly and leaves feedback. Tip, before you turn in your paper ask him for his feedback/ help a week before and you will get an A.
If you're a COMM major, you more than likely will have Mirando as a professor. He's a very tough grader and is pretty strict. The syllabus alone will indicate how tough he is. The textbooks chosen for the class had to be purchased and you HAVE TO READ TO PASS. Although weekly meetings were optional for attendance, it's in your best interest to go!
I took Dr. Mirando Spring 2021 semester online because of Covid. This class is an EASY A!! ONLY.. if you actually pay attention, do what is asked of you, and read through the lines. He tends to talk a lot but if you can read through the lines, see what's most important & do what he wants... you will get an A. Don't listen to anyone else. TRUST ME
Ended up dropping the class. He is not helpful, his speeches are very hard. He requires outlines 2 weeks in advanced for bigger speeches. Does not allow notes or notecards for speeches. Speeches have to be a certain time but doesnt a clock or watch to look at. You have to dress business casual for his class. Hes horrible do not take him.
Be prepared to struggle here. Speeches are intensely graded with little consideration from himself. Speeches are timed although he doesnt have a watch or anything to track. He relies on evidence from students he like which are not always accurate. This alters your grade as the class revolves around speeches. If u want a stuck up teacher, take him
wasn't the worst but definitely would not take again. not a clear grader. gave F's to students who drank water in his class. does not teach very well. rambles a lot. attendance matters for him
He is not helpful at all and I've asked him If I could do my speech last in the class because I was running late one day and picked me to go first. He also gave me an F for having a water bottle by my desk. He also has given me an F for drinking the water another day. Long story short I highly don't recommend taking this teacher
Everyone has something negative to say about Dr. M, however he sets expectations at the beginning of the semester. You can not complain, if you are signing up for the class, bc he makes the syllabus clear. He does not allow students to drink water to ensure the safety of the students. Put in the work,& he will respect you,Go to his office hours.
He made nasty comments personally attacking students who just wanted to learn and sat quietly in class.
Makes personal nasty comments towards students he doesn't like.
