Awesome.... Currently in Hungary on Fulbright Scholarship with return in a year
I had always done well in English but started doing poorly in his 102 class. He wasn't very specific on what he wanted in his assignments. What would make him better is if he gave detailed instructions on what he wanted
His classes are pretty easy but very intellectually stimulating. He's a very interesting guy.
his english 101 class is brutal. He is very intelegent but I think he sucks. I got what he said was a high grade in the class it was a B and i worked my butt off. Not for peope who dont have a lot time. I recommend avoiding his class.
This class was pretty easy for me. He's a good teacher and a good listener. Very sympathetic but strict with deadlines. Very fair, I think.
Joe's best quality is his passion for lit and poetry, which is infectious. Although 102 isn't lit-oriented, he brought the same intellectual passion to this one. I'd love to be in any of his classes again.
Okay this guy just sucks. Avoid him at all costs if possible. I got screwed into him when the teacher I signed up for left. BAD TEACHER BAD CLASS
He's a cool teacher and all that, but he's not as specific on what he wants as he should be. I actively read an article he assigned and I took C-NOTES and he gave me a three because it wasn't his style. He also kinda studders but I think its because he talks fast and gets mixed up! Vegetarian Power!
Wow - passionate about Shakespeare and early English Lit, very infectious, graded well, very intelligent and knew his stuff. Loved him!
Joe is very helpful in understanding what he is teaching. And when I write my essays he doesn't just grade them he puts stars where I made a mistake forcing me to find my own mistakes which makes me Learn more. He is a great Professor.
Joe Pitkin is undoubtedly the best teacher at Clark College. He is passionate and has a great teaching style. His courses are pretty easy and he is a very helpful, understanding teacher. He is well versed in a great deal of lit. as well as language. For english, I highly advise anyone to take him.
Joe is easily the best english teacher I have ever had. He chose great essay topics and graded in a way that encouraged students to improve themselves. Anyone who says he is a bad teacher didn't even try, as he'll personally assist you with any problem you're having in the class if you ask.Great Guy
Very engaging and intelligent professor. Keeps classes interesting and delves into important subjects. Makes you think. Will expect you to do the best you are capable of and to engage your mind.
Loved this teacher would he was great very helpful. Love the bald head!! He is the best
He is very helpful. I loved this class. He was always so excited to see us everyday. I wish I could take the class again and I hate english. If you like teachers that are clear and helpful, this is the teacher for you!

The most gifted English teacher I've known... changed my life. And he's hot.
I was very challenged by this class and teacher. I was impressed with his insight into conroversial issues. Joe did a wonderful job of making me challenge myself. I look forward to his Eng101 class next term.
Joe was an excellent instructor. He cares about your progress in the class. One of the best English teachers I've had. As long as you stay on top of the assignments and papers, you'll do fine in the class. He is always willing to help you. I learned a lot about English Composition in his class and how to write a good paper.
It's possible that he may know what he is teaching, but he made me feel like I know nothing about writing with comments like,“I just might know more about writing than you do.”And when you ask him for help, he acts as if he does not want to help you and he is busy. Also, his grading's tough, if you are an average student do not expect a good grade.
I honestly think Joe has been one of the coolest teachers i have ever had. He really is pasionate about what he does and that drew me into the class even more. I've always hated english until i took his class... but believe me he's not an easy grader, he's honest and is ALWAYS willing to help the students that truly try in his class. He's hot too lo
He's not that bad of a teacher. A little too tough, and he makes you feel like only smart people can pass his class.
always wants essay his way doesn't give you much room to write how you like or the way you've learned.
Professor Pitkin is, without a doubt, my most favorite English teacher I've ever had. To tell you the truth I have never liked English as a subject until I took this class. First of all I could never write an essay to save my life, but now I can write a 10 page essay. Some say that Joe grades too hard, but I think he is more challenging than hard.
Joe is a wonderful professor. He really cares about his students, and if you have any problems understanding what he is asking is is always willing to help. You can email him any time and he gets back to you right away. He goes above and beyond, in my opinion. While taking his class I didn't have a working printer so I emailed him my papers. Severa
I was intimidated by this class but he helped me through it. I learned alot and he made things very interesting. Joe is very nice and helpful.
This is a teacher who helps you learn. If you go into his class expecting to get by with what you have always done, then you won't do well. He is tough but also looks for improvement. He does a great job of preparing you for university level writing. Recommend if pursing any type of degree that includes research or writing.
Pitkin was an outstanding teacher. I loved his class. He is an awsome English teacher. I got an A in his class without too much trouble. I would love to take another class with him. =D
I had Joe for both English 101 and 102. He is one of the most encouraging, genuine people I have ever met. He truly cares about his students and does everything in his power to help them succeed. He only cancelled two days of class when his brother died because he didn't want us to get behind. Talk about dedicated.
Joe is a wonderful teacher. He understands his subject and takes the time to make sure you do too. He gives regular extra credit just for attending and doing in class exercises. A 10-12 page research paper is challenging but he really tries to help you succeed. I would take his class again.
Joe is a incredible teacher. He does his best to help his students. There is only one paper in 102 and it's not due until the end of the quarter. Of course there is a proposal, rough draft and a presentation that you also have to complete. He makes the presentation easy so you only have to be up there for 5 mins minimum. Overall good teacher.
He is the best teacher. Loves his class and energetic. no book. If you work hard you will get good grade. Explains good !!! fils like inportant class when you are there...
Great teacher wish i could have him for all my classes.
Its been a a year since I had Joe, and i felt compelled to write up a rating for him because HE IS WORTH IT. He's a very personable guy. Easy going. Just listen to him. i hate learning and have no desire for college, but my parents are making me of course, but Joe's class was actually very interesting.
Amazing teacher! Super helpful and nice. Always makes class fun. Never makes anyone in class feel stupid, even if they say the dumbest things. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Amazing teacher. Great at what he does, and very passionate. He's a really good writer, and to be honest, he's totally hot. Like an older, professory version of Eric Northman from True Blood. Seriously. Take his classes! You won't regret it.
Joe is a great teacher. He will work with you if you're having problems. I only failed the class I took from him due to my own laziness. His classes are SO easy and fun, I highly highly recommend him!
Joe was a good teacher, but sometimes he asks questions that he is searching for an extremely specific answer to, and you'll have no idea what he is talking about. Fairly flexible, nice guy, and although the class isn't mandatory, he'll purposely give pop quizess on days where a lot of the class doesn't show so they'll miss out on points.
Joe has a low tolerance for those with a poor work ethic. He draws boundaries extremely well. He deserves to have respect for his time because he is very busy with other tasks at Clark. Joe is demanding and responsible. Be there and work hard to achieve a decent grade. One must be prepared when requesting Joe's help. Nice guy, though. Ryan Burchett
Worst teacher I've ever had!
Joe was the best English teacher I've ever had. Take his class if you want to learn how to write at a university level.
Joe Is a GREAT teacher! He obviously enjoys what he does. The class was not easy, but it was well taught and there was never any question as to what was expected of students. If you take this class you will learn to write at a college level.
He was my favorite teacher thus far in my college experience. Do the EASY homework, fix your papers up for the 2nd chances he gives, attend most classes and you're golden:)He was always available to meet and sympathetic to circumstances.
Probably the hardest teacher I've had thus far. He's a stickler for grammar and makes you read LARGE articles. If you HAVE to take him, make sure you get help with your papers in the writing center or by him (unless you are already an outstanding writer)
Joe is one of the most intelligent people I've met. He can learn you such good grammar, and more! But seriously, he is really bright and a great teacher.
Joe..i never actually called him that it feels kinda weird..is such a nice person. He's got that knowing twinkle in his eye that only enlish teachers have and his sense of humor comes out too ;)What i like about him is that he is so precise and clear on what he wants you to do and answers questions right away..always helpful..strangely attractive!
was worried after reading the other comments about Joe. but after i took his class that all changed. like he said its more of a reading class since u have to use 10 sources in the paper. not a class for a procrastinator. do what he says, talk with him if u have any questions or concerns an u'll do great. strangely attractive
The class is a lot of work. That's just the nature of the class. Joe is a great teacher!
I took joe for engl 098, and 101. Loved him, he has a great teaching style. And you can get some credit back on your paper if you teacher conference with him. I would highly reccommend him.
Fantastic teacher. I wish I could have him for all my English class.
ok class but a very big ego
I personally found Pitkin to be a great teacher! His lectures were actually interesting, and he really would listen to the student's input. He is a fair grader, and if you go to class then it's very clear what he expects of you on the assignments and exams. Overall, wonderful teacher!
He has a BIG ego and VERY CONTROLLING and you do not want to question him because he will retaliate
Joe is a horrible teacher well for clark he's a good one but you can do better. He maybe funny and all but he's a hard grader or I should say excel is a hard grader since he doesn't grade his own stuff he's a joke!!
Joe is the best professor I ever had at Clark!! I love him a lot... He will spend time with you during his office hours and make sure you understand everything and will show you how you could get a better grade in class. I've been trying to take all my English classes with him.
he is a hard grader, he do the in-class test also, no point put yourself on the spot
He is a very very hard grader. If you a A-student, I bet you will get B or less in his class. Think Twice!!!
higher expectation than other instructor he do two in class writings which can let your score drop drastically very hard grader
hard grader, NOT recommanded
very rude and rush, feel so rough
extraordinarily hard, compare other professor I took, he is just a guy love to frustrate students in order to make them not to write again
extraordinarily hard compare other professor I took he is just a guy love to frustrate students in order to make them not to write again
averge in my class is 80 around, many English native speaker did poorly or unatisfied not recommend to people want to have a good grade
I really enjoyed being in Joe's class. He is a cool, funny guy and he cares about his students. As long as you pay attention in class, you should do well. I also suggest seeing him during his office hours before every essay is due. He will basically tell you exactly how to do better and you will learn a lot. Helpful, funny and very clear!
Very funny and personable! Also a Quaker. I enjoyed this quarter with him and FINALLY got a solid A in an English class at clark. Did not need the book that often so I recommend renting it (Rules for writers by diana hacker). Also-- attend class! Do not skip this class because he goes over something once then doesn't bring it up again until day of.
this is a super hard hard class, full of exams which other same cources wouldn't have, if u want to be suffered, highly recommand his class
Terrible Teacher!!!! Don't ever take his class. He will fail you no matter how hard you try. This teacher should be fired. Expects to much from his students and his grading is tough. Hard to get an A in his class. Probably not even possible.
Joe is a great instructor. It's not the easiest class, but you definitely learn something.
This guy is a solid teacher. He has high expectations, but he is willing to work with you. His grading is harsh and he reeeaaalllyyy needs to loosen that up a bit, but you actually learn in that class if you pay attention. This is not a hard class as long as you stay on top of your work.
Solid instructor. The class is hard. He selects 3 topics you will choose from for your research paper topic--these are broad topics and he allows pretty far-reaching connections to the topics. You work for your grade and he gives little pop-quiz's occasionally. Office hours are most helpful!
Joe is the worst teacher ever. He is the toughest grader in the world. He expects a citation page included on a in-class essay test. And the test is on a book he assigns the whole class to read. I WOULD NEVER TAKE HIM AGAIN! His class is more like a history lesson. Also, you take a quiz almost every day. NEVER TAKE THIS TEACHER!!!!!!!!
He's a wonderful teacher who really makes you think about your perspective as a human being. However, he's a pretty tough grader and assigns a lot of reading homework- an average of 40 pages of advanced reading between each class. Sparknotes and Cliffnotes are your friend but are still limiting when it comes to quizzes.
Such an easy A! Come to class and try your best, almost no homework. There is a 10-page essay that is due in the very end and a few assignments along the way that help you with your essay! Great class and easy grader, you either did the assignment with good effort or you didn't, doesn't knock off points for small mistakes.
Joe is a fantastic instructor and is understanding and caring towards his students. He gives insightful and constructive feedback on essays and assignments and is very encouraging and supportive. He truly wants his students to succeed.
Joe was an awesome teacher. Although I struggled in English through high school, Joe was great help and boosted my knowledge. I learned a lot. To get a C in this class, all you have to do is pass essay 4 (he has 5 essays, two of which are in class). To get an A, you have to pass essay 4 and two there essays (meet with him before each essay is due).
An amazing teacher has taught me so much this past quarter. Good Choice!!
Awesome teacher. Highly recommend him. If you follow along with everything and meet with him before each essay is due, you will most likely get an A. Greatly cares about his students and gives great feedback.
Joe is an insightful and intelligent guy. His grading methods are simple, lenient, and easy to understand. His lectures can get boring at times but are generally quite interesting, and the readings he gives for essays are thought-provoking. He's an overall very laid-back guy and I would definitely recommend taking his class.
This was my absolute favorite professor. I hate English but his class was fun and I learned more than I could ever imagine. He grades on 5 essays but you can still get a C with only passing one. I would definitely another class taught by him.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Although there are many essays, theres a good reason for them. Teaches so much, 10/10, sets you up great to challenge English 102.
Joe Pitkin teaches a very valuable and informative class. No busy-work, and no attendance requirement. Care about your education and development -- he will too. I wish I was pursuing a degree in which he taught more classes.
Professor Pitkin is a great Professor. You can tell he cares about student success and wants to make sure you understand what he expects from you in an assignment. He is a pretty tough grader though. But when I passed his class, I definitely felt like I learned writing skills valuable to my future and other classes.
Bummed I had to take this class online. Though from what I experienced, Joe's determined to keep you in the loop with the work assigned. Overall it's an easy class if you absorb his feedback and ask questions when needed. All I gotta say: try. Joe will know when you're trying, and he'll do his absolute best.
His World Lit class had a lot of reading, but that's to be expected. Joe is a really down to earth person. He gives really good feedback, is always respectful, and is very accessible outside of class. He chose excellent books and created good assignments that were sometimes a lot of work but that I learned a lot from. 100% would take from him again
Nice guy, gives good feedback on papers. Grades on a pass/fail scale until the end. Basically there are 4 major essays: Rhetorical Self-Portrait, Rhetorical Analysis, Academic Response Essay, and the final essay where you detail what you've learned. To get an A, Essay 4 and two other essays marked complete + 80% of practice assignments completed.
Very difficult class, I have always been an A student but barely passed this class. Could be different for in person but online he is such a demanding professor and will give you an "incomplete" if your paper is not absolutely perfect. He says he does pass/fail because grading is dehumanizing but makes it impossible to succeed in his class. Dont ta
Rough drafts are only ever seen by peer reviewing students which leads to you not knowing how well you did on a paper until you get your grade for your final paper. Every assignment is "complete" or "incomplete" which causes a host of problems. Your grade is listed N/A throughout the whole quarter, so you don't know how good you truly are doing.
I didn't complete some assignments due to my laziness, however, I still got an A in the class. If the essays ever confuse you, I strongly recommend contacting Pitkin about it. He actually responds and gives elaborate responses. I procrastinated on every essay, so it is definitely possible to pass this class.
Pitkin is an insult to the English department at Clark. Although he does not care about his students he definitely cares about his ego! I have always been an A student until his class. He makes it impossible to pass because of his pass/fail where you can only recieve a pass if your work is beyond impeccable. Do not take this class whatsoever.
DO NOT TAKE JOE PITKIN! You will instantly regret it. He is the harshest grader and provides you with no helpful feedback. He grades by incomplete/complete per assignment and if your work isnt completely up his standards you get an incomplete which then makes you un eligible to receive an A in the class
Joe is a tough grader, but he also is willing to schedule meetings on zoom to give feedback on your rough drafts. There are 4 essays total for the class, 5 books to read, and weekly discussion posts. He is picky about interpretation, but if you have a different view than him and support it well with textual evidence you will still pass the paper!
Try and take a teacher who has a normal grading system. Joe only gives incomplete/complete on assignments so if its not up to his standard you get an incomplete. He takes forever to respond to emails and provides no helpful feedback. Four major essays, if you fail the last one no matter how well you did on everything else, you wont pass.
Joe is a super cool dude, but he definitely is a tough grader. There are 4 essays in total to pass the class you only need to meet all the outcomes on the 4th essay, if you have him review your paper beforehand you have a pretty good chance of meeting outcomes if you follow his advice.
easy class for me considering I already knew about rhetoric. usually gives you a "complete" if you show effort. he only marks things as "incomplete" or "complete".
Emailed him, told me to meet in the morning, never showed up. Moved the meeting but I had to reschedule so I emailed him again and he responded after the paper was due. Very frustrating. You dont know the grade till the very end and the pass/fail grading is pointless since you get a grade at the end anyway.
He was fine, I’ve definitely had better professors. You don’t know you’re grade until after the term is over which is annoying and the pass and fail grading is pretty frustrating. Not much else to say.
Joe's respectful and kind. I took a hybrid format literature class, so we mostly used the classes to discuss the reading. He wasn't mad when people missed class, but I found the classes useful and there were a couple in class assignments. He grades in a nontraditional way, but it is explained well in the syllabus and it is really easy to do well.
One of my favorite teachers! You should really meet with him one-on-one, he'll spend an hour helping you with your essay and tell you what to fix. He's nice and seems to really enjoy talking to students about their future goals. Don't fall for the trap of only writing the last essay, it's a reflection of what you learned writing the other three.
He loves to talk but his lectures never seemed to drag out. He has a point to everything he is saying. He gives good feedback and welcomes you to help outside of class. He is also a huge problem solver and is very flexible.
Great teacher! You can tell he cares about his students. There is heavy amounts of graded home work, but as long as you pass the final essay and do 80% of the practice assignments you can pass the course. If you care about the subject and want to learn, I would take recommend this class.
Pitkin is the best professors I have had thus far. His grading system is nontraditional, but he explains it in grave detail and is easy to understand on the syllabus. Attendance is not mandatory, but I highly recommend attending his lectures, as they are extremely helpful. Try your best, read the materials, attend the lectures, and it's an easy A.
Joe's grading was questionable. It was on a pass-or-fail basis which made the course stressful. Recommend going to his office hours, if you don't it will be hard to pass this class.
Tough grader, you get graded on 4 papers and you need the pass the last one to move onto English 102. The rubric for essays includes more categories each time and you need to get a 3-4 out of 1-4 in each category to pass the essay. If you do less than 80% of the practice assignments your top grade can be a C
VERY strange grading system which sets new college students up to fail. Luckily I already had a solid foundation so I got an A, but I had friends who failed his class because of the strange grading. Your grade is based almost entirely on 4 essays about rhetoric, and he is super hard to reach outside of class. Grading expectations are also unclear.
Professor Pitkin is an exceptional educator who is invested in the success of every student. He provides constructive feedback and sets reasonable expectations for essays, making him an easy/fair grader. He's understanding of students' circumstances outside of school affecting assignment deadlines. I highly recommend Professor Pitkin.
Joe is genuinely one of my favorite instructors at Clark. He has such an energetic and enthusiastic personality that is obvious if you attend lecture. Grading system was kind of wonky but give it your best effort and it's an easy A. Attending lecture isn't required but extremely useful if you want to pass the class, with the plethora of info shared
Joe was a super great english professor. He cares about his students and seeing them succeed in writing. As long as you are a decent writer and can analyze things, you're all set. 10/10 would recommend him as your english 101 professor!! He grades different than letters though: pass or no pass. But, if you try your best you'll be fine and pass.
DO NOT take this professor. His grading system is horrible, and very confusing. The system sets new college students up for failure. The only way to get a good grade in this class is to meet with him outside so he can tell you his exact expectations. Also is very hard to reach outside of class.
I took his sci-fi&fantasy class and I do not recommend it whatsoever Professor Pitkin's teaching/sexist behavior and inappropriate comments, create an uncomfortable learning environment. Additionally, the lack of transparency in the grading system makes it so frustrating. and For all 4 essays the only feedback I got was "I wanted to like it :(
Joe was an amazing teacher but definitely a tough grader and challenging class. The majority of your grade comes from 4 essays and it's really important to show up to class for peer review or your essay will automatically be incomplete. He has helpful office hours and really cares about your learning. You will be sure to learn a lot.
I had Joe last term, and he was great. His grading scale is very open ended, so if you're not the best an English I'd recommend him as it's a lot easier to get a good grade with him comparatively speaking. He gives amazing feedback on every essay and does everything in his power to make sure everyone will pass. Highly recommend.
This professor is a skillful teacher. Joe is friendly and dynamic. He cares about each of his students and encourages them to visit during his office hour to help them with writing and to get to know them. His feedback was very compassionate and encouraging. I encourage people taking his class to take advantage of the office hours. It helps a lot.
This class was a lot of fun. He really emphasized that the class was a practice space and that he wasn't anticipating anything perfect or polished from us. He is a very kind and supportive prof and really wants his students to succeed, but he also tries to push us to try new things and to improve in our writing.
Joe was a fantastic English 101 professor. I took his hybrid class and went in 2 times a week with the rest being online. He doesn't give letter grades but instead does complete and incomplete. There are 4 major assignments throughout the class all of which are essays with no word or paragraph count. I highly recommend him, kind & caring professor.
I honestly think this class was not easy at all. Joe's feedback was often very rude, he would say very passive aggressive comments rather than feedback on how to make it better. He is a very hard grader, in the beginning he would state that as long as you tried you'd pass the class but I disagree. He grades based off whether HE thinks you tried.
Great guy, both in and out of class, with a clear passion for writing. Took multiple courses with him, and I would gladly do so again. Very constructive feedback, fair grading, easy to work with, helpful, all the good stuff you'd want in a professor.
He prefers to go by Joe, or Prof. Joe, over Prof. Pitkin. Joe is really good at speaking and saying things in a clear way. Sometimes his lectures and in-person feedback feels like a record player, and he is prone to repeat what he said in-class if you are to approach him in the tutoring center. Overall I highly recommend his class.
He was extremely vague on grading and refuses to give information/feedback pertaining to failings in your writing.
Genuinely awful experience. I missed 2 days of class due to being sick and got a complete fail because the final essay is the only thing that matters for the grade. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor Pitkin is one of the best professors I have ever had the honor of having a class with. One time, he started speaking fluent Spanish out of nowhere and everyone was confused. He elaborated no further. Overall, his class is challenging, but his nonconventional grading makes sense; if you put in the effort, you WILL get the grade you want.
He is a great professor. His class is awesome and he's really passionate about writing. He doesn't believe in grading so he's really lenient and his class is easy, but you still learn a lot and write a lot too. He had some guest speakers and fun activities so try to come to class. Don't use ChatGPT to write anything.
hahahaha, Joe is the nicest man, I swear. I'm a running start student, and as long as you show up, pay attention to the class you will know whats happening. During Eng101, he makes you write a total of 4 essays. The final (4th) you MUST pass. For each essay you write, you write a handwritten version in class to show what you know, not ChatGPT! GL!!
