This class is all self-taught. He is hard to be attentive to because all he does if write definitions and no practice examples which won't help you in exams or quizzes. Attendance isn't mandatory and he posts the notes that he wrote online a couple of days later after the lecture. There are probably better instructors out there but he is not awful.

Don't take him! His lectures are just written stuttered definitions and explanations that don't help. The class is just content with an example or two for each concept BUT they are nothing like whats tested. Everything is worded more complex than what was instructed. If you ask him a question he doesn't have an answer and doesn't know what to say.

He's very chill, but not the best teacher. If you're not already a "math person" then you might struggle because he doesn't explain things very well, but at least he's willing to walk through things with you. Tests are pretty forgiving, though. But the only practice you can get is in class; practice on ELC is pretty limited.

Professor Powell is a great teacher, the lecture rigor doesn't match the tests, but he puts in a lot of extra practices and practice tests that help. His office hours are really helpful, he's definitely willing to work through stuff with you!

Took this class expecting a bad prof because of the rating, but was pleasantly surprised. He talks kinda slow, but they post videos for all the topics online, so you can basically take this as an online course. He's just a chill guy, explains the topics well enough, would take again.

Powell is chill, but the class is insanely boring. He talks super slow, so it's hard to stay focused, and his lectures don't really prep you for the tests. The class itself is easy, so most people just cram before exams. He's really nice and clearly cares, but I'd recommend taking someone else.

Prof Powell is nice, but his lectures are mind-numbing. He talks extremely slow as in 5 words per minute. My friends and I literally joke about how his lecture makes us sleepy as soon as we step into the room. Lectures and labs don't prepare you that well for the tests, so you have to do lots of extra work to prep. Take other profs if available.

He is very passionate about teaching class, and lightens the mood by talking about the games and his newborn. When the class did not do good on a test, he advocated for there to be a curve. The lab is entirely dependent on your TA. My TA did not care that much and let us leave after 5 minutes.

His lectures are boring and I don't think the in class problems prepare you well for the tests. But he's nice and cracks some jokes which doesn't make it miserable.

im biased because i hate math. but dr.powell is overall a pretty nice guy, its hard to hear him in lectures because he talks pretty quiet and people stop going to class pretty soon. attendance is only required during lab sessions because there are assignments. stats is just hard tho

As the other reviews have said, Professor Powell is just sadly a tad boring in his lectures. I had to sit front row b/c anything other than that and I would have actually passed out asleep. He's really kind, makes a couple jokes which helps, and he's got these sick UGA Hey Dudes he wears sometimes, which is fun but STAT2000 is just boring as paint.

I don't know why he has such a low rating, he's great. All our assignments, including exams and labs, were on webassign. For the exam, he would provide a ton of practice which was super similar to the questions on the exams. As far as lectures, he was really clear and understandable. One exam gets dropped and we even got participation extra credit.

If you can escape the grasp of this man, do it as soon as possible. He doesn't teach what is on the test and wastes time chit-chatting in class. He cracks jokes that don't land and no one laughs. He is condescending when you ask him questions. In conclusion, I wouldn't wish this professor on my worst enemy. Save yourself while you still can.

If there are other professors available I would unfortunately recommend taking them. His class is lecture heavy and he doesn't go in detail. The tests are worded very heavily, but he isn't even touching the surface in his lectures. There were times where I would speak with him and his comments weren't very respectful and were condescending.

Nice guy, not the best teacher, but if you've taken stat before the class is super easy! I barely went to class and did fine on all the exams. He's very slow and will literally get through like two problems a class, prepare to teach yourself. Exams were short and easy in my opinion! Oh and the labs are all pointless!

He's not the worst professor I've ever had, but if you can get into someone else's section I would. Gave a lot of practice problems for each unit, but he's not a great public speaker and his lectures were very slow and dry.

I got a 92,78,84, and a 94 on the tests and got an A. The labs are easy and you'll get 100 on them if you show up. One test is dropped and I stopped showing up to lecture halfway through the semester, but there are participation extra credit you can get if you show up.

He isn't necessarily a bad professor, it is just the statistics department. It is pretty disorganized and very recycled from previous years. Lectures aren't super helpful with tests, I would highly recommend just watching the videos posted on ELC; as they provide lots of sampled problems that will likely be on tests.

Dr. Powell is very kind and loves interacting with his students. However, the structure of 3120 is very annoying as 66% of your grade are the tests. There are only 3 tests, and each is only 4-5 questions so one bad test could take getting an A off the table. Dr. Powell also teaches off of a PDF rather than a PowerPoint and struggles with questions.

He was great at teaching the topic and the subject itself is not hard. The lowest test grade gets dropped so I didn't even need to do the last test. The subject and assignments and tests are all standardized with the other teachers, so the only difference is the professor and how they teach.

Overall great person and professor, this is just a very saturated subject. There is so many people taking the course and this is a requirement for most majors, so not many people are interested in the topic. But professor Powell does his best to ensure the best for his students.
