Very kind and understanding teacher. He will help you if you don't understand the material. He lets you write in a journal almost every week. The class is both interesting and engaging.
Stay Away!
There is a lot of reading He makes you think and gives you an understanding of the material so you can enjoy the authors and their works, which makes it a pleasurable class to attend. He is interested in your success and gives a lot of his time and attention to his student. I enjoyed the class
This teacher is very bad! He is very picky on your writing style and topics. He doesnt care about helping the student pass. I would not recomend him at all!. If possible find another teacher QUICK!
He is by far the worst teacher I have ever had! He is very rude and blunt with his students. Many students have dropped from his class. Don't take his class.
safdie is very helpful and just wants you to backup what you believe. he really enjoys michael pollan, an author im sure you will study. pollan is great though. show up to class and participate in his discussions. he is a tough grader and a bit harsh on his comments. just take what he says and learn from it. don't complain
He is really rude on his student. He does not know how to teach at all[PERIOD] Stay away !! he is just VERY rude !! he's really boring also. Doesn't encourage his student at all.
He picks interesting reading material and comes to class with insightful ideas. He allows his students the freedom to express what's on their minds in writing assignments and during class. He expects that his students already have basic writing techniques. (Perhaps that's why some of the previous posters felt neglected.)
worst teacher i have ever had in my life, hard, could care less about her student and is preaches libral politics all day long.
He is a very good teacher. If you are really interested in learning he is the one. He is clear and all the work he makes you do is to help you put together your essay. Is you are looking for a teacher who does not demand anything from you then don't take his class, but if you really want to learn and take him. His class is interesting and the readi
Joe Safdie is the worst teacher I have ever had by far. An extremely rude individual with a fixed set of ideas in his head without room for compromise. Do not take this course! Absolute waste of time and sure to dissopoint. Class disgussions were fun but other than that it was all B.S. and you will NOT learn anything!
I was really looking forward to this class, but this professor really ruined it for me. He's not really clear on the expectations until after everyone in the class fails to meet them. Very stubborn and stuck in his ways about literature. Very disappointing.
not helpful rude and if he doesnt like you he will email you to reccommend you drop the class . he doesnt give helpful ideas . feedback is deplorable
Professor Safdie was great. It may have been my hardest class, but I certainly learned the most from it. He may be pretty tough when it comes to the first paper, but when he gets the feel of his class it becomes more personal - he just wants his students to learn.
Without a doubt the WORST teacher i have ever had!! I learned absolutely nothing when I left his class. His grading style is psychotic. His idea of constructive criticism is telling the writer how pathetic they are and writting a page of negative comments on the back of their paper. he never once said a positive comment on anyones papers. HORRIBLE
Professor Safdie does demand a lot of his students, but justifies his work load by reminding us that this is COLLEGE english. He is blunt, but I never, personally, found him to be rude or insulting. I also thought he was very invested in the success of his students, so long as you were willing to put forth a genuine effort. I enjoyed his class.

His idea of constructive criticism is telling the writer how pathetic they are and writting a page of negative comments on the back of their paper. he never once said a positive comment on anyones papers. Not the best professor ever. I took an online class and dropped, mainly because I felt personally attacked by some of his comments. He was very rude and insensitive.
He is a nice man, but a horrible teacher. He is very offensive and even students who try get thrown down. He's very blunt. If you can, take another teacher for this class. I have one semester left before I get my AA in English and I have considered abandoning this plan several times just so I wouldn't have to take 216 with him.
Nice guy -- I enjoy lectures and discussions. He tries to be helpful, but is not at all. His grading comments take "constructive" out of "constructive criticism" -- he would do better as a literary critic, not a teacher. Take the class from anyone else, but not him. I gave him 2's because he tries, but he really deserves 1's, though he is nice.
His comments on your writing may be blunt but with some maturity, you'll realize he gets to heart of the holes in the reasoning of your written argumentaion. Give yourself PLENTY OF TIME to plan and write your essays. Taking an opinionated stand, even if he doesn't agree with it, IS appreciated and rewarded if your thinking process isn't biased.
His essay questions are pretentious garbage that takes three days to understand. He leaves the rudest comments. Don't read his comments if you like feeling good about yourself. He loves to nitpick at a paper! It's also obvious he has his favorites. Kiss his ass and write essays about feminism and women's rights and you'll get an easy a.
he is great. He demands a lot from us, but if you are responsable you will have no problem. Many people think he is rude; however, he was never rude to me,he did write "harsh" comments at times, but they were always meant to improve my writing.I would take him again but just don't take him for creative writing since he is a hard critic.
If you're responsible, you won't have a problem. HA! I was always on the website. I'd spend at least ten hours on the essays. I only missed two classes. I had a problem with his comments and just his demeanor is general. His comments were handled with maturity. HA! Maybe if you kissed his ass. I just can't tell a professor what he wants to hear.
He was without a doubt the worse teacher I have ever had. Before his class I thought I wrote decent essays, but after taking this course he pretty much tore my essays apart with his horribly offensive "constructive criticism". He was incredibily rude and NEVER wrote any remotely positive comments on any essay. Change teachers for this class!!
Do NOT take his classes. His comments aren't helpful, he refuses to listen to other peoples opinions and basically makes you feel like an idiot. It's not worth it! Yes, the class discussions were interesting but that isn't enough to make up for his lack of ability to teach. A great critic, yes. Teacher, absolutely not.
I am enrolled in his class and haven't taken him yet-- AND ALREADY he has managed to be an arrogant narcissistic jerk. I e-mailed him about information on the class and his response was rude and egotistical. He has a serious narcissism problem and should be required by the school to seek mental help. He is NOT encouraging and I am DROPPING him!!
He's a cool teacher. He's very interested in his student's work. Sometimes his comments are harsh, if he's not into the genre you write about, but i guess it's to improve us. I enjoyed the class. I just wish he made students write more short stories than poetry. We wrote only 1 short story for the class each. I didn't like that. But good class
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is the meanest most unhelpful professor ever. His comments on essays are mean enough to make you cry and anything but constructive. He expects you to be a mind reader. He doesnt accept the MLA style on papers claiming that its wrong. I never got anything lower than a B on a paper before I took Joe. Take someone else!!
If you value your GPA, life, sanity do not take this professor. His comments are not only contradictory, but rude and wrong! He says that he wants only MLA, but I had to show him the correct way to site! He tells students not to care about grades, then harshly deducts points for frivolous mistakes! A big walking hypocrite, stay away!
Horrible horrible teacher. I don't recommend him. My friend also had him the same semester as I and he was just horrible.
OH WOW DO NOT I repeat Do Not Take this guy. He is egotistical and mean. He dosen't even read your essays and if you ask about his comments he will come back with even worse comments! I love english lit and he made it horrible!!! I fyou like eng take someone else i found out to late!!!! He is rude and a hypocrite!!!!
By far the worst experience in any class I've ever had in my life. This man should NOT be teaching. If there is a positive comment on this page about this professor,it's him writing it. This man is the farthest left wing person nut I've ever come across. I can not believe he?s even teaching.
Pretty bad teacher, and this is coming from an English major who got nothing but A's in all other english classes. He's quite rude too. I don't recommend him at all. What did I learn from his class? NOTHING.
This prof. is tough, but fair. He wants you to become a better writer. He does assign a lot of writing, but it is what makes you a better writing. If you actually want to become a better writer take his class.
He tells you to write these journals every few weeks, at first he says just to let your ideas flow, but when he returns them he basically grades them like an essay, its really annoying. he always writes negative**** on the papers even when your getting an A or B, you can def get an A or B in this class but he's really rude and negative!
I'm a student who is prepared to work very hard, but this particular professor was extremely unclear about his expectations from students. And his grading is inconsistent. The only way to get ahead in this class is to kiss butt and play teachers pet. Safdie is extremely arrogant. BEWARE if you take any of his classes. Last resort only.
I loved this professor! He is very abrupt and to the point, but it?s because he really tries to teach his students to become better writers.Don't expect an easy A or B. He puts a lot of effort into his class and expects the same from his students. This was the hardest class I ever took and by far my favorite! I learned so much! Thanks Joe!
Biased, only cares about his own opinion. Don't take him unless you're ready to do lots of writing for nothing. Not to mention for a low grade.
I had him two years ago and I still think he should not be teaching. He proved I'll love English no matter what. But at a university, professors have easier essay prompts and give you more than a week to complete it. They understand the reading you have to do on top of having a life outside of class. Oh and having other classes.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. He's rude and he's extremely unclear with his expectations. Don't even take him as a last resort. You will be MISERABLE!
THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!!!!!STAY AWAY FROM THIS USELESS EXAMPLE OF TEACHING.YOU LEARN NOTHING.HE HAS FAVORITES AND IS EXTREMELY RUDE.KEEP AWAY!!!
He is so rude and full of himself. I dreaded his class. Don't take his class, I learned the hard way. He's not even a tough teacher, I managed a B with little work, he's just really sucky.
I took Professor Safdie online and loved him. He was super helpful and made our online class fun and exciting. I guess theres a huge difference between the in-person Safdie and the online safdie. Anyways, if your looking for a fun, productive, worthwhile english class - take him online!
Syllabus is direct and concise, but when you follow all requirements to the "T" that teacher still deems it not enough. I was taking his class online and receiving a B through out the semester and still recieved condiscending emails about how it wasn't good enough. To be honest he is pompous and arrogant about his writing.
He is difficult. He's unclear about things, but then when you ask questions he makes you feel stupid.I loved the way we did class, because we would really just discuss the plays, but he did have favorites and that was obvious.I always get A's in my other English classes, and then he said that my writing was boring!I feel much better for it now though.
Dude gashed me,hard. I have never received a grade lower than a B, but I get a D in this one...right. Very knowledgeable and scripted but super-critical of writings...not what I expected. Really enjoyed the classes and interaction but I would never make it my business to abuse someone's writings and style as this man did. Art is free. Know that.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. He is rude and never gives a positive comment. I took him online and received a B but I cried just about everyday. He says his comment are "to the point" in order to help you but they don't help as much as they discourage you. Seriously, NEVER take him!!
I took him three years ago. I ended up finding his syallbus and essay prompts on an old zip drive. I can only now understand his prompts the first time reading them because I'm an English senior at a university. He expects senior level work. But with half the time and page numbers. His syallbus is a contradiction of how he actual conducts a class.
He is the only teacher to not teach well and expect alot out of students. He mostly speaks in sarcasm to put down students about their behavior, comments, and work. He expects people to engage alot in discussions on both in blackboard and class. He wants to students to do well while he struggle to put an insult in the encouragement. Be a nerd.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He wants you to participate but when you actually do, he doesnt listen to what you have to say. He doesnt have an open mind. The class is basically re-reading what was assigned. It doesnt really matter if you read at home or not. The lit was great but he crammed so much into one week that its not worth it.
It appears some of my classmates don't need a prof as much as they need a babysitter. The amount of lit assigned is standard for this kind of survey course. You will be expected to write cogently and THINK. Take this prof if you want someone who will prepare you for university writing & reading. Don't take him if you expect an A just for breathing.
Good professor but seems to think his classes are more important than any other. Everyone else has only 1 weekly assignment, Safdie often has 3-5 a week so check online posts daily. Dont critize his book choices, he gives you a lower grade if he doesnt like your opinion. The only professor that works you through holiday breaks, so plan on working.
Meanest teacher I have ever had. He's rude and inconsiderate. Makes you do more than 3 hours of work outside of class with an online supplement. Takes at least three weeks to get work back. I do NOT recommend him.
All the people writing about how he's mean are the most overly sensitive people who can't take constructive criticism! His comments are honest, professional and helpful. Clearly the negative comments are from people who shouldn't be taking college classes because they have poor writing skills and expect easy courses requiring no effort.
I just finished his online class. It was a lot of work, but was by no means excessive. He's not nearly as mean as the posts on here would make you believe. However, if you turn in crap, he will call you out on it. Overall it was an interesting class and I got a lot out of it. I would take it again.
I really enjoyed Professor Safdie's class. I think people need to realize that college (and life for that matter) is not about compliments. Criticism is a part a life. The class requires a lot of effort, but most of it is on discussion boards. Overall it was a great class, and I'm taking his next class this spring.
Do not take this joker's class, even as a last resort. Hands down the WORST professor(if you want to call him that) I've EVER had. I did not learn ONE SINGLE thing from his class, other than how to read rude and abusive comments from a prick. How is this piece of work still employed? What a joke...
My LEAST favorite class that I have ever taken. Doesn't respect student's time, and requires more work than should be required for an online class. Leaves nasty comments on your papers, and I was not a fan of his TA. Please take another teacher's class if you want to save yourself a lot of stress.
I'm amazed by these comments. You're in college, people! I went to a college prep high school that required 40 mins. hw per class everyday (6 classes = 4 hrs./night). All of you who didn't do as well as expected should go back and hate on the instructors who passed you. They obviously didn't do their jobs. I got an A. Try working harder.
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. Insanely negative, puts down students in front of the class, writes mean and not constructive comments on essays. You must participate in online discussions when it shouldn't be part of an in-class class.
Good teacher. I actually enjoyed being challenged in a class for a change. Take Joe if you want a class where you'll be challenged to grow as a writer and thinker. His honesty, though tough, is meant to help students see their weaknesses and improve on them. He will give you the grade you earn.
I took his class and received a B with little effort. I'm grading him low not because he is a tough teacher but because he is a jerk who likes to put his students down in front of others. In his narcissistic world, he is always right and it's his way or any other way is wrong. Very self-absorbed!
He comes off as very hippie-ish and carefree. But when it comes to his discussions online, he is extremely harsh in his feedback and not helpful at all. His classes lack structure and many times are spent reading aloud the works we were supposed to read prior to class. You might think this is easy, but think again when it comes to his grading.
This was a terrific class with a professor who loves what he teaches. Yes, he's a tough grader. Joe is available to students with questions and will help you to write a better college paper. I got a 'B' and if I wasn't transferring, I would gladly take another of his classes.
ONCE HE RECEIVES THE STUDENTS WORKS HE WILL TEAR THEM APART WITH CHILDISH COMMENTARY THAT ARE OVER THE TOP & EXTREMLY HARASSING. HE TALKS TO HIS STUDENTS AS IF THEY DONT HAVE ANY FEELINGS & HE SAYS READING THEIR WORK IS A WASTE OF HIS TIME. HIS CRITISM IS EXCESSIVE, JUVENILE & IMMATURE.
Good professor except the grading is not efficient. My advise to coming students: put your effort, you will learn. The only problem is you have to put plenty of time in his class. He is tough but fair. I had no choice by choosing his class; however, he is not that bad as many students listed before. Trust yourself, study hard. You will be fine.
I took him for English 201 & 101 and he was an awesome for both. His classes are interesting and a lot less boring that other english classes i have taken; he chooses material that students want to learn about. You still have to work for your grade, but that's what a college course is meant for. It is clear that teaching is one of his passions and was always helpful with any questions. The only negative is that he is pretty slow when it comes to returning assignments. I highly recommend!
Joe is genuinely enthralled by Shakespeare and truly wants to get his students interested as well. Yes, he's extremely opinionated BUT I disagreed with him on many points and it didn't affect my grade. He's more than fair and will bend over backwards to help you any way he can. More respectful than he gets credit for!
He was absolutely horrendous. He belittles students daily, assigns work with little instruction or guidance, and is generally very moody. I'm an English major and I dreaded his class so much that I withdrew. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I loved the reading material and didnt mind the assignments all that much. But the grading was inefficient and the teacher was horrendous. He belittles, criticizes, and has to have it his way or no way at all. He isnt open to other opinions that may differ from his own. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
I am an engineer student, so I can handle difficult, time consuming classes, but this was ridiculous. Half way through the FIRST week he sent me an email saying I wasn't logging into blackboard often enough and that my participation wasn't going to "cut it." He was so rude to me and it was only day four. out of my 7 semesters he has been the worst.
This guys is a JERK!!! Took him for ENGL101 Online, got a B and NEVER again will I take his class! Even if it was the last one to graduate! If you want a micro managing monkey on your back, I'd say go for it! He is contradicting, never grades on time (how are we supposed to learn?), and if you express your opinions he'll talk crap!!! DON'T DO IT!!!
DON'T DO IT!!! NEVER again will I take this professor! I can take criticism but WOW, this guy is far off the deep end! I took him online, got a B, and it was horrible! You can't state your opinions if it's not the same as his, never grades on time, and groups in an online class??? C'MON! I took an online class to avoid people and just do the work!
Quite possibly the biggest prick around! Totally condescending and didactic! His online class has information in too many different places. Totally needs to streamline the information he gives to students and be a bit more gracious and instructive.
Online ENGL101 - HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!!!! Do yourself the favor and take someone else... ANYONE!
very mean and hard. do NOT ask him questions, he yells at you and makes you feel stupid. Not organized
He is a unique teacher and yes he is honest but sometimes it's necessary. He expects the reading to be done and for you to give your input good, bad, or indifferent. He is definitely not one of the easiest teachers i've ever had fo if you're looking for an easy A forget about it. If you want to learn something he's your guy!
Great class. Moderate amount of work (2, 8pg papers+weekly online participation), loved how it was almost entirely discussion based (no lecturing). VERY HARSH, HONEST, CRITIC. He isn't afraid to tell you on your paper if it sucked, even if the paper was stellar (no really, he compliments and criticizes at the same time). TAKE FOR THE EXPERIENCE.
Joe is definitely a unique teacher. He is very real and will tell you exactly what he thinks, good or bad, all the time. Discussion based class, 2 papers, weekly journal entries, 1 oral presentation and 1 EASY in-class essay. Attend class, take your time on essays and submit them to him ahead of time for approval, and you should do fine.
Well, as for myself I can't complain, but all my classmates had serious problems with Safdie: with his delivery, criticisms and essay questions. He is not very clear about what he expects from students, and is often adversarial with students trying to get advice on their papers. I think he means well as a teacher, but his style is NOT for everyone.
I don't think many of the scores posted here are deserved. Took 8 week ENGL 101 class and got an A despite giving C effort (doing all assignments, turning them in by the due date, min. req for participation). Somewhat heavy reading (but not unreasonably so). Don't recommend if you're super busy, lazy, or have thin skin. Can improve your writing.
Professor Safdie is not for people who: Know what MLA it but still don't know how it works, who are looking for an easy A, those who have too many other priorities, and/or those who can't take real, raw and constructive criticism. He will teach you things that other professors cannot and will not teach you! I enjoyed writing for this class.
Professor Safdie is not an easy teacher, however he is very helpful and wants his students to learn something from his class and succeed. You must be dedicated to earn a good grade and don't get offended with his criticisms, which are very constructive. Be prepared to work hard! I totally recommend professor Safdie :)
A challenging teacher, but absolutely worth it if you're will to put in the work. Yes, he'll call you out when you're being lazy, and not very nicely, but he will tell you when you're getting things right. . Overall, one of the best english teachers I have ever had. My writing wouldn't be the same if I hadn't taken his class.
He's not a bad professor - he challenges us, which I like because I do feel like I've learned a lot in this class. He also is really good at getting discussion going in class which I enjoy because it doesn't feel like everyone's just asleep the whole time. I say take him, but don't expect to just float through his classes.
Extremely time consuming difficult class. You better know MLA perfectly and not be easily offended. You will definitely learn from him, but his comments on essays come off as condescending and harsh most of the time. He's a fair grader, but very critical. Only take this if you have LOTS of time and patience.
Teacher was nice in person. Was very rude and demeaning on line. Was not helpful and was rude to other students on line. Completely inappropriate.
Worst teacher I have ever had. I cant believe this arrogant man still has a job. He constantly mocked Christianity when he knowingly had 3 people from PLNU in his class. The class consisted of the discussion of completely useless subjects. The discussion wasn't lead in an intelligent way.
Joe is a champ. He is probably the best professor of English Literature in the city. Do not take him if you aren't willing to learn. His biggest enemies tend to that camp.
Good teacher. His online 8 week course is very fast paced and I do not recommend it unless you have time to put in the effort. His online course is very well put-together. 4 Essays. 3 Journal entries per week. 1 portfolio. And numerous blackboard questions.
I've taken a couple of Joe's classes. Great human being who really cares about his subject but he is not patient with those who don't read or try. He isn't always clear on deadlines and assignments so show up to class and ASK if you have any confusion. Make sure your paper is well formatted in MLA. He really appreciates when you do the reading and participate in discussion,
Cares a lot about teaching and it really shows when people participate. It's a discussion-based class so be ready to discuss! There's a lot of reading involved. The assignments are really easy since all he asks of you is your thoughts on the readings. Your input is really all he wants from you. Overall a great professor.
I can take criticism, that's what writers do. But if you're going to tell me my writing sucks and leave it at that, it's not helpful. Very condescending. Takes forever to grade, belittles you in comments, you have to like what he likes. It was difficult. I love when professors challenge you but he made me feel like I shouldn't be in college.
He told us we could be creative with our journals then docks points because your journal isn't how he wants it. Same way with essays too. He has favorites and people who gave him high ratings, said they had no problems with him are it. If you don't suck up to him, write EXACTLY how he wants, he will leave snarky and rude comments and dock points.
Do not take him unless you can work well without any guidance or clarity. His essay prompts are vague and crap. Mostly compare this to that . When he asks for my opinion in an essay in his prompt and I stated it he said that he was not looking for my opinion. Can't follow his own prompt. Does not give any help.
This teacher is very condescending. I'm not one to get offended easily and I enjoy criticism on my work. But, he would grade papers and comment saying this sucks! The journals that he has you write he say's its free writing and enjoy doing them. Thats a lie. He docks points for anything minor. I don't recommend taking his 8 week class at all.
The class was very interesting, but I felt as though he didn't utilize lecture time very well. He often uses class time to talk about his own agendas, and is very pushy about his opinions. Although you are not graded down for disagreeing with his opinions. Not a very enjoyable teacher. I felt like my time was wasted every time I went to class.
Ive never met anyone, esp a college Prof' so inconsiderate of others lives & time. He sends emails as if its an OCD aspect he's trying to conquer. In addition to his "weekly" emails, he sends them also on Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. Sometimes twice or so, on the weekend.. This professor certainly needs more to his life than student email attacks
I had Professor Safdie for a short-term online ENG205 class. It's a fast-paced class, with lots of writing, but informative and useful. By far the best online class I've ever had, and in contention for the best English class I've had so far. If you're lazy or hate English, stay away. Otherwise, I highly recommend Professor Safdie.
Safdie is truly an inspiration. If you are an English lit major like me, you MUST take a class or two from Safdie. He knows his stuff and not just that but he's, PASSIONATE and I mean truly in love with literature. Three IMPORTANT essays, journal entries and one oral report. Attendance is mandatory, reading the criteria is too!
Great guy & a good teacher but not very good at expressing what he wants from you. No tests but lots of essays. Topics are pretty vague. Keep your focus on the reading & include LOTS of quotes. His feedback can be frustrating. Blunt & sometimes contradicts himself. Sends TONS of emails. Online class did an "oral report" via chatskype thing.
He is a good teacher and he knows his stuff. He expects a lot, he's good to take if you actually want to learn something and better your skills.
Do believe these comments below. To the point, not as a person but instructor... He IS NOT Clear on Journals as all!! Says informal yet his expectations differ. DO not, I repeat do not keep them informal. He's not clear on anything!!!! He will insult your work. Provide evidence in your work. This is not a writing class but treats it like one.
This teacher has high expectations but does not explain exactly what those expectations are. He tends to contradict himself. His comments are very critical and not helpful. This is a very tough English 101 class. I took this because I needed to for general ed credit and am not interested in so much creative writing. Hated this class.
not a writing class, so why does he want to change it? I felt as though I couldn't truly express my thoughts on paper because he will only make you feel that you should be a professional writer at this point, and we are all different. I hope he reads this. it would be nice if students expressed their thoughts comfortably w/o making them feel lower.
I put off taking Safdie's Eng 249 class because I was terrified to take it based on negative reviews. My experience was completely positive and he was well-liked by the class. His feedback on my writing was the clearest and most specific I have received. I felt he wanted everyone to succeed and his passion for lit and poetry was inspiring.
He would come to class unprepared, and start talking about readings he didn't assign. He would waste a lot of time in class going over what the assignments were and reading aloud (he argues that poetry must be read aloud for the full effect, but would also read prose pieces aloud). I did get an A, but I didn't learn anything from the class.
worst professor I had. Months worth of work remains ungraded yet he s confused why students dont improve. he is very unclear and defensive when you ask for more guidance. he is rude and offensive. I would wait until another class opens before I take him again.
really tough grader, grades eng 101/105 as if it were eng 205 or higher as he has stated in class he used to only teach eng 205 . Expects a student to know how to write a research paper at the 101/105 level . Doesn't bother to help, states that the example provided and guidelines are enough. Wouldn't take again and I wouldn't recommend.
Lecture is sitting around in a circle talking about the book and topic of technology. Very slow grader. Good luck with your research paper b/c he doesn't tell you the topics until 2 weeks before then does a conference on the week it's due to discuss your first draft. Of all the teachers, choose a different one.
He isn't always specific but is very knowledgeable and introspective. The class is mainly lecture and group discussions on the pieces we read. You have to read a lot but he goes over everything in class. 1 Oral report, 5-6 journal entries every 3 weeks, 2 essays, lots of discussions on blackboard that are your opinion on the literature. Take him!
Absolutely demoralizing and rude. He ridicules you when you ask questions and then wonders why no-one reaches out to him and half of the class drops out. Unclear grading criteria and he forgets what he, wrote on the syllabus and deducts points from you. Forget getting participation points here. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
His directions are vague and aren't very helpful. Also, he sends the most passive aggressive and condescending emails to his class.
The guy's the al deal
So condescending, for students with thick skin who has no other choice.
He is extremely disrespectful and degrading. He has expectations that are impossible to be met because he is extremely passive aggressive, and unable to be clear about what exactly he does want. Don't take his class unless you can dedicate all of your time to his class because that's what he expects.
I took Safdie's 8 week class and I really enjoyed it. If you want real feedback and to better your writing take Safdie. His criticisms are very constructive but if you put in the work his comments aren't "mean." If you got "mean" comments you probably dished out a load of crap. You can't expect to get an A for half-assed work, it's college.
Very condescending. Often late to grade even short assignments. In fairness, he did say early on that he does not keep up with grading but he says it is because he gives "thorough" feedback but it is much less feedback than most professors would ever think of giving. Not an open or encouraging environment to be in at all. Take another class.
He was condescending if he disagreed with my political views. He gave me a lower grade because he disagreed with me on an argumentative essay. He also said because I had not changed my views by the end of the semester that I was "totally antithetical to the spirit of the class." I got a C in the class but have A's and B's in harder English classes.
Total waste. English is very easy for me,I got an A. I should have gotten 100. He always has some little nitpick that has nothing to do with English. I stopped showing up halfway through to focus on other classes. He gives assignments by word of mouth and doesn't pass the info via email. Very slow grader, few comments. Took personal calls in class.
While his class is difficult, he truly prepares students to transfer to a 4-year uni. He refuses to give way to the common mentality of show up and youll get an A that plagues Mesa. It must be difficult to teach at a school with so many apathetic students. If you want an easy A, don't take his class; if you honestly want to improve yourself; do.
