A legendary teacher, we are fortunate to have him
GENIUS
A great prof. I love his lectures. Great sense of humour.
awesome chem prof. Knows too much!
Don't take Org II with him in the fall... hold out until summer, much better!!!
Amazing. Funny. Knowledgable. He's got it all!
THE BEST, A GENIUS
He may be a genius, but somewhere along the line he forgot how to be courteous!!
Loves Himself, Loves his own anecdotes, Forgets to teach any science whatesover
Confuses science with memorizing facts from his stories
the best prof after hanadi sleiman in org chem

keeps you interested in the lectures
Funny, interesting & arrogant... Lockhart in a nutshell
Extremely funny, interesting and engaging. Takes great examples from everyday life to illustrate points. Also teaches you things you can use, like info about alcohol.
He's a really good teacher who has the rare ability to put chemistry in a historical and interesting context. He's a really knowledgable guy.
He writes great books. But very rude. P.S. Does not wash his hands after he takes a piss.
awesome professor
He's good but WAY TOO OVERRATED! He's arrogant and he makes you feel so small when you ask him a question. Good for first year students...he's definitely a breath of fresh air compared to some other profs.
this prof is amazing. He knows an incredible amount of stuff...about everything. He makes org 2 interesting and engaging. Exams are very straight forward...no tricks. Look at class examples!
i love this man!He is the best teacher i've ever had and makes everything sound SOOOO interesting.a really devoted prof, puts all other chem teachers to shame. if u have any chance to take his class,TAKE IT!
amazing prof
Brilliant teacher, but very arrogant person. Not good one on one.
Definitely overrated, based on above comments. He may have a lot to say but you may as well read an article out of macleans. Drugs course lacks scientific objectivity but rather seems like a pretentiously written editorial. Definitely quite full of it
Very interesting but a little conceited. Weird smile. Over all, Harpp and Fenster were much better teachers and just as interesting
so clear, funny. just makes your day!
i felt i was intruding when i wanted to ask him questions during his office hours. Very much like you have seen him on television in class. And i would Take him if you can, i didn't like Fenster's section as much, Ariel is nicer and more helpfull overall.
very interessting class....not so easy if you dont put the necessary work into it...joe is full of it though and thinkls he rules the world of chemistry....moron this guy..... go harpp
This guy is the greatest, actually keeps the students interested for the whole length of the class. And as for you who think he is full of himself, well damn, he knows everything thats why. He's everything ya need in a prof. Plus those suits are so ****.
Sure he doesn't talk that much about what's relevant, but he makes it interesting and for once I don't fall asleep like I do for every other chem. prof. Who cares if he's arrogant, listen and do your work.
Top quality as far as teaching goes. Very interesting, clear and knowledgeable. But compared to Fenster for genuine care for the students & friendliness, he's far behind.
knows all sorts of trivia that make the subject interesting even to a chemistry detester.
Best professor ever. Interesting lectures and also enjoyable.
Very insightful. I didn't know organic chemistry could be so much fun! Has great sense of humour, deadpan in the extreme. Rock on, Schwarz, rock on!
I dont find him conceited at all! i think he's super interesting and funny and knowledgeable.
very good prof, and its a good thing too cause this guy's a jerk. thinks he's the most insightful, brilliant person on earth.
a decent prof, but nothing more than decent. He knows a lot of stuff, but he's not that great at teaching it.
I loved him and thought his stories were great. The information I remember from his class is from real-life examples and is useful and fresh in my mind.
i love you schwarcz

Awesome teacher, knows his stuff. Yes he is prideful, but he has a right to! He's Joe Schwarcz!
you get pains in your hand from taking notes like crazy, but as long as you go over your notes well, you're bound to get an A on the midterms (there are 2 with 70 something questions) but because there's so many questions, you can blow off 10 of them and still get an A.
The best !!!
Schwarcz is a great lecturer. he explains everything really well, and makes it like a story. This class was awesome - SO useful in day-to-day know-it-all-ness. the exams are all fairly easy if you study
Taken 4 classes with this guy, he's the greatest! I don't know too many profs who can keep my full attention for 1.5 hours, but this guy can :)
Teach a real class for once. Over rated
Great lecturer. His lectures are very interesting. Fair exams too.
Prof. Schwarcz is an excellent prof. and his classes are fun, but you DONT LEARN ANYTHING USEFULL. If you have an elective to use and you want to have fun, take one, but dont expect to learn any useful info.
very entertaining but product placement in his classes, and very bad world of chem: environment class (this guy gives no info whatsoever on anything of use). but easy to pay attention and i still recommend taking it but don't listen to what he teaches it is crap (global warming is good for canada?)
He is a wonderful lecturer, interesting, funny... I don't know what people are thinking when they say you don't learn anything useful, I learned so much in this class and loved every minute of it! It takes a great prof to hold the attention of 200 students for an hour and a half! Amazing class!
he was great, hilarious, kept my attention, he also made me think about switching majors... too bad org chem is so hard!
Excellent lecturer. Never felt like you were actually learning anything because the class was actually fun. When it came time to study for the exam one realizes that a lot of material was actually taught. Exam questions were fair, be sure that you know his stories!
Dont go to class watch him on discovery channel... save yourself the trip
What an AMAZING prof!!!! Makes organic chemistry interesting, and *gasp* FUN!!! HIGHLY reccomended!!!!
He is a good teacher.
He once told me : "I am afraid, You will only get the mark that you deserve" & so I did. Take ANY class you can with him, if you fail, you will end up learning more than those who passes with other Profs'
multiple choice exams suck bananas
makes stuff very interresting
He teaches easy courses. He should teach a real course. Very selfish and a fake as a person
Mr. Prima Donna is a pretty good prof. Funny, too. I wish he wouldn't take himself QUITE so seriously.
I love his class, but not like his exam.
You will be crazy when you see his exam, 62 question in total, 32 are from his part, 26 of them are side stories, somewhat without any hint and any relation with chemistry. This is CHEMISTRY!!! Not STORY TESTING or Memorization test! He indeed killed a lot of Non-English speaking students. Avoid him, if possible.
the midterm today was amazing easy! i luv u joe schwarcz!
Amazing prof all round. He's a strong believer in "You Get What You Deserve", and that's definately true. If you don't work, you'll do poorly. But if you try your hardest I can promise you you will do fantastic in this class. Something fun: Ask him about 75% of the way through the semester what was the biggest mistake in his life. Funny story.
Had him for gen chem, org 2, and 2 world of chems. He has kept my attention better than any other prof at mcgill, you really don't mind going to class with him. He's not the easiest, but if you work you can do well. Know his stories- but definitely take a class with him, WOC drugs was my favourite class at Mcgill
this prof is a good lecturer and explaisn things well.this is not as easy a class as people say so beware.you need to put in a lot of work and memorize little details if you want to do well.
I took OrgChemII and two world of chem classes with him. He is an excellent lecturer who makes his material interesting and fun. World of chem can actually be applied to everyday life and I would say that they were the most useful courses I've taken. Multiple choice can be tricky but if you study hard A is within reach.
Excellent
Super interesting and engaging speaker, was often almost sad when class was over due. However, was incorrectly informed that this was an easy class, which most certainly was not. An A is possible, but more work than an elective should be due to rather difficult MC questions.
You gotta be thankful that he's teaching you, not only is he a "celebrity", but he really is interesting. His teaching is good. Made organic chemistry a little less borring. Although his questions on exams are somewhat tough...
meh.. no aweful but not great either- I like Mittermaier more. His part of the exam is hard to prepare for as he's not super clear on what he'll be testing you on and there is not practice. A bit arrogant as well though he does make an effort for interesting lectures
ok teacher, but this is a prime example of someone who has a PhD and above average intelligence but cannot make the cut as a good professor... very arrogant and doesn't really like to answer questions....
If you have to take Organic Chem 2, take it from Dr. Schwarcz in the summer. He is a great professor and his explanation are clear. If you study hard, you can get an A. He makes chemistry interesting by using practical examples.
DR Joe Schwarcz is my one true love at McGill. One can go through such hardships at this school, and Dr. Joe is a breaht of fresh air in all his students lives. He is SO interesting to listen to and so informative! I live for his stories and his lectures. He is my McGill angel.
Fantastic proff, one of the best out there. His stories make lectures genuinely worth showing up to!
Still debating whos the best prof, him or Fenster. He simply knows how to teach and be effective because he is also the head of the Office for Science and Society. It is a pleasure to hear him teach. Love all his books oh and he loves to talk about hockey!
He tells interesting stories and tries to make his topics in this course as interesting as possible. Pay attention as he really is an interesting guy. Go to the lectures and review the NTC's and it makes the exam easy enough.
Not the easiest class and he only teaches a portion but is always extremely clear, which helps come exam time.
Awesome Prof
an absolute lad!
Good teacher :)
Great Professor, love his way of teaching
Class so interesting! Even though it was at 8am and recorded, I still went to class. Teacher funny and helpful. Exam super easy if you study well and you do the lectures. World of Chem rocks!
One of the best classes I took at McGill
HIS CLASSES ARE AMAZING! He always covers a lot of material for sure, and you're too busy scurrying your pen about to catch every word he says ('cause mind you it'll be tested!) but the classes are always something worth going to!
This guy is on top of his game. Tests were fair and straight forward. Does cool magic tricks. Teaches about real life stuff, that although is complicated, is well, reality. He's unique from McGill Professors in a good way. Efficient with getting results back on time. Org is a hard topic due to the nature of the beast, but he does a good job at it.
He's really the best professor I had so far. He makes everything he says interesting and each week I was looking forward to go to his class. He's funny and really really smart and he will make you discover things you didn't suspect. I loved this course and highly recommend it!!
AWESOME MAN!+GREAT KNOWLEDGE
Best chemistry prof at Mcgill in my opinion. Classes very interesting. But beware, the lectures might seem easy because he is clear, but EVERYTHING will be tested.
Good Prof
Very good and interesting prof, really knows his stuff. CHEM 183 is a very interesting class too but I would maybe not recommend it for students that don't have a science background
The best lecturer around
I loved the course but Dr. Schwarcz was the worst prof. out of the three. He's lectures and voice are monotonous, which makes it horrible to actually listen to what he's saying. He's also arrogant. I've seen him be disrespectful when speaking with students with genuine concerns. Overall, interesting class, boring guy.
Joe fives an awesome lecture - he teaches you many things but he backs them up with a bunch of really interesting stories that make the material seem really clear. The exam questions were very fair, and even though it is a class about memorization, some questions can be answered with common sense.
Star lecturer, really great speaker. He's pretty funny too. Probs my fav prof for CHEM 181.
If you are not a science student, then I would highly recommended not to take this class. I struggled all the way through the class, you really need to study hard. The teachers are alright, sometimes boring and sometimes interesting. However, only take this class if you have a proper grasp of science.
Great prof! Very passionate in what he is teaching and occasionally telling fun stories of his own. The lectures are very much content-based and you need to take notes carefully to pass the exams. Lots of stuff to memorise but mostly organised. When he talks about seemingly irrelevant stuff it may be tested too so watch out for those points.
Best prof I ever had even if it was only through online videos!
Professor Schwarcz, is a great lecturer. You can tell he's passionate about the material, also I found him to be genuine; tells funny personal stories. With that being said, the course is presented as a "general knowledge course" with no previous chemistry knowledge needed. This is completely false. Most exam questions focus on chemical understandi
harder than I thought it would be and lectures are very long and boring. you need a friend in that class to keep you motivated to show up. midterm and final are all multiple choice, although the course is very heavy on memorization of words that all sound the same, so the exams were hard
Took both 183 and 181, 181 is far easier in terms of content but both are very pleasant because he is an amazing lecturer, very passionate about his class and very insightful about a lot myth in chemistry and daily. Definitely easy A for any science students because memorization heavy course.
He's my favorite prof at McGill! He made CHEM 181 so interesting and made the material seem very easy. Aced the final.
Prof. Schwartz is by far my favorite prof in McGill! He is very clear in his lectures and makes material fun and easy to learn. His slides are the best! The only thing I didn't particularly enjoy was the 2 hour long prerecorded lectures every week but apart from that Joe is a real gem!
He is a very humurous lecturer. His classes are absolutely interesting and easy to understand. There are many interesting topics and he really makes the class enjoyable. Class is easy, there are only two mts and one final, the questions are very straightforward and you get easy A if you memorize everything.
I really enjoyed the class. He was enjoyable to listen to and had a ton of interesting stories. The exams are fair, and if you take notes you should get an easy A. He's a really cool person.
I took both 181 and 183 with Prof. Schwartz and I loved both. Ultimate Favorite professor at McGill. You just need to take very good notes in 183 and you'll ace the exam.
he is definitely one of my favorite professors in the university. The lecture is well-organized, easily understood, and very enjoyable. he is a humorous and knowledgeable man with excellent and unique ways of delivering all the concepts. take notes as much as you can and attend to every class, with his help, u will ace this course.
I loved CHEM 183 with Prof Schwarcz. All of his lectures were interesting and engaging and I overall loved this class because of him. This class was taught by two professors but Schwarcz was the better lecturer. The lectures are also all asynchronous. Your grade in the class is determined by 2 midterms and a final. I really recommend this class.
Joe's lectures for CHEM183 online (Fall 2021) require a LOT of note taking and the classes often feel long, but I promise if you actually look over your notes once or twice, work with a friend, and use your notes you'll learn and remember a lot of fun facts, but also get an A. It's only three exams and just lectures. Pretty easy elective!
Prof Schwarcz is a very good lecturer. Chem 181 is an easy course as it is all online, open-book and asynchronous now but the teachers made it even better. All his lectures were very interesting and he had a lot of fun facts. Get notes and this class is an easy A and that is coming from a management student not a chemistry one.
Easy class and prof. Each concept video has a transcript that is accurate (no mistakes or anything, it is literally everything they say in the lecture). Name of the game is to download these transcripts, put them all on a document and then control F during the test (got 90 on exams and 100 on quizzes with this without even watching videos!)
Great prof! Had so much learning about food in CHEM 181. He uses a lot of humour in the asynchronous lessons! Would definitely take his classes again!
This prof is very judgmental of other approaches to some concepts he explains, especially when it isn't his field of expertise. For example, when talking about mental illness, he repeated it was caused by genetics and neurotransmitters. Talking about mental illness ONLY through the lens of a biological approach is just wrong in so many ways.
literally a god in human form im obsessed with him and everything he says so funny and smart and wonderful mwah
overall good prof, but his lectures are EXTREMELY UNORGANIZED and BORING. Sitting through Chem 183 was such a drag. I feel like he went off topic so often and just gave us information that was so unnecessary to the actual course... He's basically and EDITH Zorychta (PHAR) 2.0 but with easier multiple choice questions
Goes off on tangents about the most random things and then quizzes you on them?? The midterms are super hard even though the lectures are super easy and the content is SO random. He is also quite disrespectful in how he speaks about people with mental illnesses.
I lovve prof. schwarcz! His lectures are fun and he showed us his rubber ducky collection. My only complaint about the class is that your entire grade is based on two midterms (30% each) and a final (40%), so if you do badly on any one of them then your grade will suffer. All u have to do is watch the lectures and take good notes and youll be ok :)
I took both chem 181 & 183, such a quirky man and he had entertaining lectures. But I cannot stress this enough: TAKE DETAILED NOTES!! Exam q's sometimes based on the most specific/irrelevant topics, including random graph interpretations. Was time consuming to take notes, but worth it if you want an A. Don't leave them til the last minute!!
Prof. Schwarcz's lectures are engaging, though a bit disorganized at times. The exams are challenging but manageable if you take good notes and use study tools like Unstuck study. Overall, it's a decent elective.
Way to left for me pushing agenda. . Very interesting lectures.
a great class to take as an elective. learned a lot as a non-stem major and it really doesn't require that much effort to do well. the only thing i will say is that he gives 3h to do the exams but it is very crammed considering there's like 90 questions.
