His classes are like attending a funeral. Monotonous note taking with practically ZERO classes discussion or participation. What is the good thing about his class? You can download class notes and review sheets and rarely attend class. Sutter also
Tests are detailed and difficult, but come directly from notes available online. Most won't have to read the book to do well. Class is very BORING. The trick is to answer the review questions as completely as possible using the notes, and understand them
Excellent Class. Most concise study guides of any teacher I've ever had!!
This is the MOST boring class that I have ever attended. I would NOT recommend it to anyone.
I transferred out of this class in Sept of 2001 during the 9/11 events. Mr. Sutter made the comment that we were not going to go to war and that our class would not discuss it any further. During a time of grief he was horribly insensitive!
Was a bit boring, but still a good teacher.
Not terribly exciting or easy, but his lecture notes are printed out, and you are essentially given the test before you take it. Minimal study time should earn you a B.

I loved his layout and teaching style...very helpful.
An increddible teacher. Very interesting lectures. As long as you come to class you will have no problem with the test.
Good Teacher, Always willing to help with questions, intimidating at first, but very cool
If you do the review he gives before the test, your bound to well on this exams. His exams are all mult. choice and he drops the lowest grade.
Second best teahcer I have ever had! His lessons are on the internet, you don't have to show up except for tests, but you want to so that you don't miss anything. Really explains everything. AWESOME!!!
He is VERY strict, but if you go to class, download his notes and do the study questions, you will make an A.
I read what everyone else said, and frankly i'm suprised. I'm an A student, well I should say i was. He's hard! I studied his reviews, went to every class, wrote down all the wrist cramping notes, and I still made a B. I must admit that his class was interesting, but the intrest wasn't worth the B that brought down my GPA!
at first he's intimidating but heis more layed back than what he seems. Mr.Sutter is very helpful with any concerns you have. At the beginning of class i went in knowing nothing about gov. and came out with an A
If you study what he tells you to, it's very simple to pass.
Study his notes and you'll do fine... plus attend class for those extra 5 points a test.
This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. He makes it perferectly clear from day one and constantly reminds you that he simply doesn't give a damn if you pass or not.
He's definitely a good teacher. He gives you his notes, but don't be fooled. go to class and take notes cuz there's a pop tests worth 5 extra points for tests. you use your notes. these points can make a big difference! this is an upper level COLLEGE course people. don't expect it to be like 5th grade history. you have to know the info. and you have to know how to apply it, not just memorize it! do the reviews, go to class, and there's still no promises... he's a good teacher, so it's really up to you!
He's a good instructor and you learn what you need to, but he throws in little sarcastic quips pretty frequently about people he doesn't like, i.e Bush, Cheney, (anyone not a Democrat.) I expressed my thoughts about the ACLU and he blew up. He's arrogant and pompous but ultimately an effective instructor. It's a blow off anyway.
Mr. Sutter is a pretty cool teacher, very cut & dry. Go to class, take notes, STUDY, and this class is extremely easy. His lectures are NOT boring, he gives pop quizzes worth 5 pts on your test and you can use your notes!! When he says use note cards, do it! Don't be fooled into thinking the course is easy, you do use critical thinking skills!
If you can't pass this class you have a severe learning disability, and should seriously consider persuing full-time work and abandon your college dreams. His notes are posted weekly online, and tests are DIRECTLY from them. I missed a ton of class and just read his notes at the end of a unit for two hours, and I rec'd an A.
He's a nice person and is very smart but his class is a little hard
AWESOME! Everything is on the notes... u really dont even need to go to class except for the pop tests that hes gives just for extra credit on the unit exams....he gives a review sheet for each exam that has EVERYTHING before the test...its soo easy...
Joe Sutter is an excellent Government teacher. Do not mistake this as a blow off class just because he posts notes online. Attend the class, take notes, and answer the review questions so you can get high grades on your tests. He is very helpful with any questions you might have for him.
Professor is extremely easy. Posts notes online & provides review questions that are answered directly from the notes. Everything on the test is asked in the Review. Has open-notes pop quizes worth 5 points; these points go toward the next test. Is pretty dry, yet not boring. Somewhat opinionated, but nice. Highly recommended.
Ridiculously hard and he does not care about his students or the grades they make.
Pretty cool guy. Tests are pretty straight forward from review. Show up to class, take notes, do reviews, and you'll do fine.
Super hard, didn't seem to care, and super boring.
Mr. Sutter is really nice, but hard. He uses only power point to teach. Five tests, Final is optional. Two quizzes before each test, both worth five points on your test. Test reviews posted online and so are all of his notes. He helps, but only to a certain point. Then you are on your own. Very funny, teaches well, but hard.
he doesn't believe in extra credit. The quizzes and tests he gives are your only grades. The person that said this "If you can't pass this class you have a severe learning disability, and should seriously consider persuing full-time work and abandon your college dreams" needs to keep thier opinions to thierself. I am a straight A student.
The Guy is hard and he only and the highest you can make on his exam is a 90 the guy is tough.
Im not a great student. And I hound him easy. I got an easy A. Just go to class and TAKE notes. He lets you use them on quizzes. He posts lecture notes online. Test is straight from them. Very easy. Book not even required. I never even opened it.
You might think you did well but you might find out your grade is lower than expected very tough guy i tell you
Boring, intelligent, but thinks he is funny. He isn't. No use of the book. I didnt study for any of the tests, ended up with an 89. They are easy if you're smart - if not, why are you in college? Oh, and why is he in Political Science? He's a GOVERNMENT TEACHER. There is a section *gasp!* called GOVERNMENT.
If you want a professor who puts you to sleep, monotone lectures, has notes that will make your hand numb, doesn't care if you pass or not, and has no cushion to save your grade, then by all means take him. I'm a A-B student, barely passed with a 72. Tests are hard. Puts info on them not in the notes. Save your GPA by not taking him.
Very nice man. People seem to think he doesn't care about his students or their grades..They are wrong. He is a strong believer in earning your grade and taking pride in your work/college career. I you think you can pass by LUCK, think again. If you aren't going to put fourth effort, don't waste his time. If you're willing to work, he will help.
His class is pretty easy but you have to put the effort into it... before every test, there are 2 quizzes. what you make on the quiz goes toward your test grade. he posts the notes online and the test is EXACTLY like the notes... STUDY the notes!!!! The tests are scantron. The final is optional. The book is not required, you do not use it.
The only reason you can only get a 90 on an exam is because he gives two 5 point quizzes to encourage you to go to class. He is a great teacher if you pay attention and actually WANT to learn. You take notes everyday and have two quizzes a week. He posts all notes online but it is neccessary to take them in class due to the quizzes.
this is the class where you will defenitly learn...but his exams are hard...you have to study it like its you life if you wanna come out passing..try taking watson at tcc south for an easy a+ p.s. sutter has a high drop rate
His monotonus lectures made me want to shoot myself in the face. If you know the material on the provided reviews, you can easily make an A. Make sure you write down his notes, cause he gives quizzes afterwards. The quiz scores count towards the tests.
The lectures are EXTREMELY boring, and you have to take notes, cause he gives you pop quizzes at the end of class sometimes. Other than that, really nice guy, and he makes the class sound harder than it really is. Study for the tests as soon as you can, because they are kinda hard.
Super easy, just go to class and write down what's on the power point. The review sheets ARE the tests, so if you know that backwards you will ace it. He puts reviews and notes online, so if you can read you can make an A. Don't buy the book, you won't use it EVER. Part of your grade comes from the pop quizzes, but they are open note. He's awesome!
Good teacher! Test are on lecture. No book. I liked him. Have to attend!!!
Sutter helps a lot with his test review sheets.Study those and you have the test aced. Also he gives detailed notes for his lectures and you would not even have to show up for class if not for the pop quizzes. His Final is worth the same as the regular tests and he drops the lowest score.
This is a no nonsense guy. Must attend all classes. Pop quiz after most lectures. All notes posted online after lecture and quiz. Test reviews posted online. Makes (what I thought would be) a boring class pretty interesting.
I didn't like this professor at all. I went to class everyday, took notes, read what we were told, and did the reviews and yet I still did poorly. His lectures are very boring and sometimes unclear, but don't bother asking questions because he seems to have an extremely hard time even answering them. I wouldn't recommend him at all.
This professor is one of the worst I've ever had. I did everything asked and still couldn't pass the tests. I studied and read what I needed and still found trouble. It may be because when you ask a question, he answers it by changing the subject all together.
I really tried my best but I just could only get C in the class. The tests are from review but there are many tricks and it is much harder than I thought. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
I had a rough start but then took some advice he gave, flash/note cards.. repetition really does help. I would also use his notes to arrange them in ways I could visualize, e.g. tables. may sound like a drag but it really helped b/c I was having to read (repetition) over and over. I was actually able to apply the material i learned. Awesome class!
One of the best professors I have ever had. It's not hard to get a good grade in his class. As long as you do the work and come to class there is no way you can fail.
I really enjoyed this class. Mr. Sutter is helpful if you ask questions. Tests only, no HW. Gives great reviews, everything in the review is on the test. I recommend him.
Great professor. Take his class (if you actually want to learn).
His entire class is one long powerpoint that he posts online after class. Even with attending and studying, he seemed to put a lot of real life situation and trick questions on his test. You have to understand the material indepth and can not just memorize.
Sutter is great. He has a lot of 'presence' in the room, so there is never trouble with people disrupting class. He knows a lot about what he teaches, and is very good at keeping things simple. Take Sutter's class any time you can.
Lecture, Lecture, Lecture, test. This is what to expect form Mr. Sutter's class. He does not give extra credit, or homework. All notes are posted online at the end of the week, and he has a review sheet for every test. Memorization and word association will not work in his class YOU MUST ACTUALLY LEARN THE MATERIAL. He's tough, but awesome.
3 lectures then one test, he gives you the notes but no extra credit; this is a class for people who want to really learn instead of pass, as for me I just wanted to pass and as for him not giving a grade curve it really doesn't help if you want a good GPA and can't survive him, drop the class (for your GPA's sake) he really teaches, toughly!
If you want to make and A, don't take Sutter. This class totally wrecked my GPA. He doen't give any homework at all. Yes, he gives a review but his tests are worded very difficutly. Good luck!
I really enjoyed this class actually. You need to take notes during class because he gives pop quizzes after wards, and you should def use his reviews! They are a little hard sometimes and take time to do, but if you do them (like he says), you will do really well on the tests! Basically, if you attend class and study, you'll do perfectly fine!
Lectures go by quickly. Book not necessary. All tests, no homework. Pop quizzes at the end of class that count as part of test grade, so class is pretty necessary to do well. No homework. Gives a good study guide and notes so if you miss a class, you can still do well. No extra credit.
I took him for TX govt. The Power point slides were really fast, could not write fast enough, I did have my laptop and typed it but it was very difficult to focus on him and type at the same time. He humiliated a student in front of the whole class. I felt bad for the person who was picked on. Reviews are available and pop quizzes. Low text book.
I felt like I was in an excelled high school class. He talks down to people and treats everyone like they're a moron. I don't think he realizes he does this?? You have to write down the lectures as he's lecturing them which takes away from his lectures... I wouldn't recommend his class but it wasn't completely awful. (You don't need the book).
Mr. Sutter is extremely intelligent and knows his material. He made learning about politics enjoyable for me. I bought the book but didnt pick it up once. I received an A in this class. It is a must that you make it to ever class as there are lots of notes to take. His reviews were the test. I dont know how you wouldn't get an A in this class
I completely enjoyed this class! Before taking I had no interest in politics, Mr. Sutter is extremely smart when it comes to politics and is able to teach in a way that brings it all together and makes sense. You do not need the textbook. You must go to every class. If you pay attention its an easy A!
....You better go to class.. Don't miss it. His test are hard and if you don't go you won't pass. I learned a lot though so overall he is a good teacher just tough.
ATTEND CLASS! If you are someone who does not like to attend and/or take fast and furious notes...do NOT take this class. He knows what he is talking about and you will learn a lot, but very fast moving.
TERRIBLE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU WANT TO PASS GOVT. THIS CLASS MURDERED MY GPA. his tests are SUPER hard!!!!!! he does know what he is talking about but his tests are miserable.
DO NOT TAKE THIS class if you want a good GPA, it will murder your GPA, he gives random pop quizzes so you have to attend class, his review is hard and his tests are impossible. I strongly recommend you drop this class if you have it!He's a jerk and does not work with you.
Never take him he is the worst instructor ever. This class destroyed my GPA. You will not learn much from this class either. ps. (NO EXTRA CREDIT)
His class is only difficult if you don't show up to class or put some effort into understanding the material. He provides reviews for every test. Answer those questions and you will get an A. He also provides notes from his lectures that provide EVERYTHING you need to know for the test. Don't miss a quiz, they're worth 10 points on his tests.
Pay attention, all the information is there. Take notes and take advantage of the reviews he posts online. Not a lot of class interaction, but very informative. Pray to the scan-tron gods after every test, they are your only grade source. No written papers.
Very knowledgeable, I will give him that. Lectures the entire time and uses power points. All notes are online as well. His test reviews are nothing like his tests. If you value your GPA, take another teacher.
he really knows Texas Govt inside and out. posts all lectures/reviews. his tests are nearly IMPOSSIBLE. literally studied AND printed my entire review sheet on the back of my scratch paper for 3/5 tests and never made higher than a 77. also, show up to class EVERY time. coming out with a D after busting my butt. this class shouldn't be THAT HARD.
No book! Must attend class to take notes & take quizzes. Tests are from notes & review sheet he posts. Review sheet is the test. Fill up note cards with all info from notes that relates to questions on review sheet; UNDERSTAND & memorize. He welcomes student's questions. Can tape lectures.
I took U.S. Government from him. His tests are incredibly difficult, even with memorization. He does NOT grade fairly. Also, the grading system can be somewhat confusing at times, and he never responds to emails. Projected grades don't include quizzes, so I'm not sure if he adds them at all, honestly. He does not return graded tests, either.
He is very clear in his speaking. He knows a lot about the curriculum which helps you when it come to taking notes in his lectures. Also his dry humor is actually pretty funny. I thoroughly enjoy his class i definitely recommend his class.
If someone asked me, "who should i take for gvmt", the first thing i would say is NOT sutter. He expects every student to be brilliant and know all the information from the beginning, which is obviously why I'm there? to learn it? So just a heads up, don't take him if you want your GPA to stay up.
I have enjoyed Mr. Sutter and his lectures. He expects you to pay attention and be able to apply the knowledge you learn to his exams, which is common sense. Read the chapters, listen and take notes, and do the review and you're fine. All these comments that he's horrible and unfair are ridiculous. You're in college now, learn.
Fine teacher and very smart man. If you are very interested in government this is the class for you. You have to study and be able to apply the material. Don't really agree with his grading system but he's the professor. He expects a lot so always make sure you're prepared. Can't miss class or you've already lost 10 pts on exams.
Do not take this class if you care about your GPA. His exams are nearly impossible to pass. After the first exam, nearly 1/3 of the class dropped due to failing miserably.
Call me dumb but after making flashcards and studying from the test reviews I did poorly in his class. I'm not a great test taker so if you are, you'll do great. If not, kiss your GPA goodbye. There are no extra credit opportunities. Although I learned more than expected I regret taking this class.
Is a GREAT teacher, Tests REQUIRE studying!!! Book is NOT used and he offers reviews which the test is on. DO THE NOTECARDS. If you study you will do well. If not you will not. He values hard work and effort and does not offer extra credit. He is a great teacher who answers to questions and likes his subject. Did well after doing notecards. STUDY
Loved this class! Requires a lot of studying and you need to be there for the quizzes, but as long as you pay attention, you should do well. I learned more from this professor than from any other class I have ever taken!
You don't need the textbook at all. Sutter was entertaining every class. You can tell he truly enjoys government. He doesn't offer any extra credit and attendance is mandatory for quizzes. I'm an A student and got a B in this class because I only scored 80s on the tests. However, he's a great professor if you're willing to study hard.
Prof Sutter was awesome, his class is not easy but SO worth it if you actually want to learn something. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give quizzes which are part of the test, and if you miss them there is NO making them up so i highly suggest making it to class. He is very clear and knowledgable. I wish i had taken him for my other class.
This was the only class I've ever taken that I tried HARD in, & didn't succeed. I will admit when I didn't study as much as I should've, but I actually DID for this class! Every single test, I kept trying harder & always ended up with the exact same grade! He is NOT a fair grader. I ended up dropping this class, taking another prof & getting an A.
He has a weird sense of humor. You could take some of the things he says the wrong way. I wouldn't go as far to say he's mean he just has zero tolerance for anything. Also isn't eager to help. His tests were pretty hard. They're multiple choice but were more critical thinking questions. I struggled to pass this class and I am a A/B student.
Mr. Sutter was a awesome prof he is very clear with his lectures, you dont need a book to pass, take notes in class for the pop quizzes, and study the notes and review he gives you for the chapters.. EASYYYYY WORK!! GO TO CLASS AND PAY ATTENTION AND YOU WILL PASS.
Sutter's class was so difficult. Don't take him! I studied hard, made flash cards, asked for help, and I still didn't pass a test. He gives reviews but they barely help. NO EXTRA CREDIT and no grades other than tests... and they are HARD. Not at all interested in the students, either. He doesn't get a good rating from me.
He isn't a great teacher, I almost failed his class, he will tell you to read the book, but it's completely unnecessary, just study the review, and his notes are online, and you should pass. Also he sometimes blazes through the notes, and you wont get everything written down, so I suggest bring a laptop to take notes.
Tests are very easy if you study the review. Make sure to take notes but he does upload a version of the notes online.
incredible instructor. His tests are very challenging but, he has no problem helping you before the test. I went to his office almost every test day. He gives fairly easy pop quizes 2 times before each test. go over the study guide that he posts and take notes!
If you're okay with being talked down to in lectures, by all means take this guy. He's condescending to everyone even if you work hard and lets his opinions color the lesson instead of teaching objectively. If you don't copy the powerpoint verbatim you won't pass tests because he never uses the book. If you miss a class you're screwed that unit.
He is a nice teacher, but his test is hard! He drop your lowest test, but there is no extra points. I made one 80 and some 50s and failed! I have to retake this class to graduate. :(
The lectures are long, but they are okay. Tests are difficult. Be sure to study review and view questions from every angle possible.
He's a nice guy, but there is NO extra credit, and his tests are hard, and ask for details. I ended up dropping the class, because I never passed his exams, even when I would spend hours reviewing his review sheet(s), and notes. I wouldn't recommend this teacher if you don't already have a solid foundation of government.
Sutter is a great professor. I've taken him twice. His tests are difficult but if you study the notes he posts online and the review questions you will pass! Show up to class and take notes because he gives pop quizzes at the end of lectures. Use note cards to study for tests. Don't need the book. He's funny here and there. Overall great professor
You will either love him or hate him. Get ready to buckle down and work hard, though. To pass: read the notes, do the review, do the vocab terms - you don't really need the textbook. He is opinionated but you don't have to agree with him. Be polite. He really expects respect, phones are a no. He drops one test, but most people fail the first one.
This class is tough but certainly easy to pass. As long as you do the reviews for tests, study, and take good notes for the pop quiz you will be fine. Very nice professor and is very informative.
Textbook is not needed. Show up to every lecture for pop quizzes which are very easy. Review for test, do the review should get an A on the test.
Pop quizzes are worth 10 point per test(2) simple questions as long as you take notes. Lectures will run the entire time don't expect to be released early. Notes posted online are not very helpful, so it's important to take good notes during the lecture. Willing to answer questions you have after class. He will make you work for the grade.
I'm currently taking this class, and I might as well just teach myself federal government. He goes through the power points so fast, you don't even know the right questions to ask or even what he's talking about. Everything I've learned I've had to gather pieces from the notes I was able to take. He's a really decent guy, just a very hard class.
I absolutely loved this professor. He was so funny, and always tried to add an extra flair to class with his humor. He is definitely tough, but he's friendly and always open for questions. Do the review and you'll do great on the exams. Do not be afraid to ask for clarification. Tests are pretty basic if you take good notes.
Although he is a really tough professor, he is clear about what it takes to do well in this class. He puts his notes online after class but, I still recommend taking notes. I learned so much in this class. You have to use his reviews if you want to pass this class. I made a quizzlet review for his tests which helped me make an A in this class.
This class has no daily work or homework. That is a huge plus to me. The only 4 grades you will have in that class will all 4 be exam grades. There are 4 exams and a final and the lowest exam grade is dropped. These exams are hard, but they are multiple choice and if you take good notes and study your reviews, you will pass them with relative ease.
Basically write down everything from his lecture and study that. He uploads his lecture notes so it doesn't hurt to go over that. He gives a review guide for his exams, and if you got that down, you'll get an A. He gives pop quizzes so go to class for those. These quizzes count towards your exam, they only help you not hurt you. I loved the class.
If you want to deeply understand Federal Government, Mr. Sutter is the man! His tests are exactly in the notes from the power-points. He does not assign homework, which is nice, but I would recommend studying for the pop quizzes. ( which are from the notes as well.) Mr. Sutter is a great man, he really has a passion for what he teaches!
