Joe is fun! He is very relaxed and flexible.
Interesting guy...tests are long & tedious...a lil' bit hard...not bad. Must do lab write-ups at home...but for only 2.
Don't expect to learn much. Difficult tests; don't be fooled b/c they're "open book", they're still tough. Buying the lecture notes may hinder rather than help.

Excellent Prof. Joe is organized and runs class in a casual way that allows student to ask questions. You can learn a lot in this class if you work.
Likes students to ask questions during lecture, very helpful, e-mail, office hours. He also posts helfull info on the net like back tests, worked out homework assignments etc.
Looks kind of weird, probably cuts his own hair but seems to be ok.
lol, looks like a rock climber to me. This was a good class. It wasn't hard. Did have its share of work though, but its chem lab, thats what its supposed to have. Anyway, the guy is a cool teacher. I got an A.
Major stoner! Hella cool as a person. You have to study on your own to do well in his class. He uses power point, which is boring. You got lost in thought. Open-book, awesome, although, you need to know what you are doing. No lab tests in his lab class!
he's a cool guy but you don't learn a thing in his class. if you are an average chem person, you can easily get an A but won't prepare you for the next course. open book tests, labs are ok but hard grader
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Online homework and quizzes help prepare you for more flexible lectures where he will spend as much time as necessary going over problems. Does experiments in class. You will learn alot if you study and keep up.
He is very good. Work hard and learn lots.
HE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER,FUN, AND HE IS FAIR.
he is the best chem teacher i ever had. he is funny, fair and teaches good. if you study his nots you will get an A.
Awesome chem teacher and really cool guy overall. He's always there to help when you need it. Whether your majoring in chem or just need the class, Joe is definitely the one to take.
His vocal clarity isn't the best, and seems a little uncomfortable teaching. Great at developing tests and the homework is fairly simple. Fair overall, but not as great at explaining things as some others
This class is for people who are good in the subject. He goes really fast, doesn't elaborate and gets kinda irritated if you ask too many questions or are just not getting it. Nice guy, fun, but not for people who struggle in chem.
The best lab teacher ever. All tests are group open book tests. Always willing to help. Funny guy, fair grader. Drops one lab, I recommend not even doing the last lab. Best Lab class ever I highly recommend this teacher.
you can get an easy A in this class. you get to work in groups on everything which makes it easy otherwise it would be hard as hell. i thought the excel stuff was hard and nobody really teaches you how to do it. i did enjoy his teaching and the lab even he was not really clear at times.
At first he seems easy, just by how the syllabus is broken down to. Very unclear and not helpful at all. Test does not cover materials lectured in class. Everything is at fast pace. Doesn't like students asking questions. Power point teaching sucks!
Toto is meant for lab teaching, his laid back attitude rocks He wants to get outta lab as bad as you do & doesn't waste your time with boring lectures or making you stay the whole period. He grades easy and is really flexible if you haven't finished something or need more time. Take him for lab he rocks. If you just go and do work, it's an easy A.
very easy, I got a C in this course, but that was becuase I studied less than 5 hours during the whole semester, the only negative point that he has is that he is very lazy so all the tests are going to be graded by TA's, but the lab is peace of****& I got an A without even purchasing the lab manual
He pretty much rules. Take him for 201.
Great professor, knows his subject, trully enjoys teaching it. He is really laid back and understanding. Homeworks are multiple choice and are turned in online, while exams are mostely written problems that vary in the level of difficulty from test to test. He provides exams from previous semesters for practice. Pleasant learning experience.
Toto is so cool! I loved his class because it was so laid back. In lab, he didnt care if we wore sandals or didnt wear goggles. In lecture, the tests are similar to the old tests he posts online. The hw is easy: all multiple choice. Also, the final was online.
Toto looks like a guy that wants to be in Ultimate Fighting Championship. But he is calm, probably knowing that no pencil necked teenager in the room can defeat him.
Toto is the $%@!. He is a laid back professor who makes the class enjoyable because he's not as serious as the other teachers. He jokes around and has a sense of humor. He teaches well and doesn't throw in other jargon that just wastes time. Plus, he is the advisor of the Mesa College Surf Club so obviously he's a cool dude. Take him!
Great professor. Made chemistry fun n easy. Take him vs. tappen.
Great teacher. Always makes time in class and in office hours to clarify any questions you have. Previous tests are posted so you know exactly what to study for. The material being covered is pretty complex and difficult, but Toto makes every possible effort to make it understandable. I enjoyed his class, and learned a ton.
Nice guy, pretty funny- doesn't act like a teacher at all. I got an A but studied more for this class than anything in my entire life! His tests are SO hard, BUT thank god for the curve, it saves you. He relies on the powerpts a bit too much, I learned more by studying on my own. DO the practice exams & go thru problems in slide book before tests.
I got C's on all the tests. And my final grade was an A. Love him. He's f'in hott too.
I love this guy!... Not that easy, but an exceptional professor. His course makes you want to learn more and is great at making the subject interesting. Plus he is always around to help anyone in need. ++++
Had him for both Chem 200 & 201. He truly ROCKS!!! But Chem is still a lot of work. He posts back tests/exams online to help you prepare for current exams. They may end up being different but it gives you a good idea of his testing style. Also ALL quizzes are on WebCT are ALL multiple choice. Piece of cake. Lab was fun too. I recommend taking hi
he is very laid back, but do not mistake that for him being a easy/nice prof. If you put in effort he puts in effort. He is my first pick!!
OMG the class is so freaken easy! There are lots of back exams that you can use to study for your in class exams. Just read the book and do the problems on the back exams and you'll get an "A" in the class for sure. If you can't get an "A" in this class, it only means you're not putting in the effort!
Prof. Toto is a fun guy who makes chem lecture interesting. The lecture is based on the lecture notes. The back exams help somewhat, but it helps to actually learn the new material; what a concept! The five week summer course is brutal. A full semester is probably an easier task.
He is so hoooooooooooooot..i really love him.. he is so funny and his classes are very fun. he is pretty easy..i highly recommend him.
I was so glad to take Toto's Chem 201 class and lab! He was an awesome teacher and truly cared about his students. Participate in the Elementary School Science Fair if you can! I had so much fun shocking the kids! ONCE AGAIN--TOTO'S CHEMISTRY CLASS--IT IS A MUST TAKE!
greatest chem professor ever. He's super nice and funny. He makes lessons easy to follow and really cares about his students. best chem prof. must take.
Toto is the man. I checked him out on RMP and thought it was going to be a breeze. it wasn't you had to work hard and put in effort, he will definately meet you half way. Good chem experience learned alot all my questions were answered. Lab is a pain, but work hard and in the end it will be alright. Don't and don't blame anyone but yourself.
I had a great time in this class. He makes some funny jokes and keeps a relaxed atmosphere. Unfortunately I think heard he was dealing with some stuff outside of work and so he sometimes "wasn't there". When he was, his lectures were crystal clear, and was extremely helpful. Bad days weren't so good though... Hope things work out for him.
SO after reading all these great reviews on ratemyprofessors, i was expecting this class to be great. OMG how i have been duped. this class is atrocious. Yes the teacher is nice and laid back but he cant teach at all. hes unwilling to solve problems, doesnt speak loud enough, and his lecture have too much stuff to understand what is on them.
I just started taking his class this semester and Im very dissapointed. After reading all these great reviews i thought he was going to be great but hes a terrible teacher so far. His lecture slides are incomprehensible. There are too many things on them for someone to comprehend. another thing is that he doesnt solve problems all the way. He assum
For me chemistry is hard enough as is so getting a good professor is pivotal. Professor Toto is awesome. He is very clear and easy to understand. His tests are similar to older ones that he posts on his WEB CT. Study hard and it is definitely an A-able class.
Slides are very busy and hard to follow. Style is very relaxed and easy going. Tests are hard because there is no way to prepare for them as they are unrelated to the homework and lecture. He does give lots of partial credit which is nice, but overall I would not recommend him.
I took him over this last summer. He was pretty chill, sometimes kind of funny, and is an interesting lecturer. He gives you notes of his slides. Tests aren't easy, but if you study his notes you'll be fine. Homework is 20% of grade, midterms are 60%, final is 20%. Final was easiest test. It isn't a blow-off class, you'll need to put in some work.
got him for lab and i should have an A but i slacked because it's TOO easy.. he doesnt grade ur labs, so u dont even have to do it.. he only grades quizes (only like 5 Q's) and three lab writeups, which he might lose and just give you an A. He's the kidna guy that you wanna grab a beer with or smoke a dubie or do some crazy experiments with.
Toto is the kind of teacher that you will find at the university level. He runs through power point slides that are extremely lucid. You will never have to read the book. He puts up old exams that you should study off of and you will do well. I think he prepares you very well for the university. He's a good guy, take him for lab too if you can.
I don't get how people don't like Toto. He is so down to earth and is approachable with any question, no matter how "stupid" the question is. His class is hard though, people don't like it because they have to think. Study his powerpoints thoroughly and you will be able to at least pass. Exams were challenging. But overall, Toto is great!
He is a fair teacher. Expect to work in his class. If you have questions, he will answer it with clarity and respect. Lab exams worth 35% and labs are worth 65%. Most of the labs are with partners. He is a fair grader. I would recommend him for lab. Just don't get behind or procrastinate in his class or your screwed.
He is clearly passionate about chemistry and willing to anwer any questions. His powerpoints are incomprehensible in lecture as a quick run-through. You absolutely need to study the powerpoints and the book thoroughly at home. The online quizzes have trick questions. However, it was still not difficult to get an A.
I guess he's the lesser of the chem evils.Uses his own PP slides that doesn't follow the book.Minimal quantitative calculation examples worked out during lec. He's nice & all but PP lecs are monotonous & contain very little info of what you will be tested. If you don't read the book also you will do badly on the tests.
His lectures were fast pace and kinda hard to follow because he makes his own slides. Definitely take advantage of his office hours. He really cares about his students and was great help with any questions i had. Test were difficult but most of them were not test bank questions which is cool. He posts old test online so you can study them.
Unfortunately for lab, he is hardly "present". Disappears frequently, made jokes the 1st day about lab safety (not cool), and never made you wear goggles. If you're not a chem/bio major this lab is nice, but for those who are serious it?s a disappointment. Will rush you to finish lab. Never used my lab notebook, easy easy A. Lots of group work.
Does not explain the material well, rushes through everything, and is never there for lab. I actually learned more and got better test grades when I taught myself and stopped going to lecture. It's really hard to learn when it's so obvious he could care less about being at class or lab. Such a bad experience.. Don't take him
I liked him, he's a really nice guy. Very friendly and super easy to talk to. I wouldn't say he's super helpful, but he loves chemistry and enjoys sharing it with students. If you study the material you will learn it, if you don't study...you can imagine the results. So put the work in and you will do well in his class.
Refuses to explain anything. Very unhelpful
Very laid back and nice. Unfortunately, this is not the way to teach a class. Never really learned anything from him. Powerpoint was all over the place. Study on your own and you will get an A. If not, hope for a C.
Very laid back and easy if you show up and do the work. Not very good at helping to explain the material, rely on what you learn in lecture.
By far one of the best professors on campus. Helpful, answers questions you have even for other classes if he can, and is willing to stay after class to explain some more. Honestly the best professor I have had in college.
Reviews last lectures material before going into new material which is helpful. Normally ended lecture 20 minutes early. Doesn't post the answers to his study guide exams and review packets. The Homework is fair but he liked to put problems that we glossed over briefly during lecture in his exams that wasn't like any of the homework. Read the book.
I only took the lab part with him last semester, it was very very easy but if you're planning on continuing with chem afterwards, I don't recommend. Everyone who took the class with me was really not adequately prepared for chem200 because he had such low standards for everything
All the labs conducted in this class are very interesting. He is moderately helpful when it comes to question but he really knows his stuff. All exams are online and open book. Make sure to pay attention when he lectures and take good notes. Getting a good grade on labs are easy as long as you do the calculations right and understand the material
Do NOT expect to learn by attending lecture and "skimming" the book. He is deceptively hard. Online quizzes are tricky and tests are hard. He might just be too laid back. Book is about 5x more in depth than items covered in class. I hated the MESA ed. textbook with a passion. Study review questions and back tests. STUDY STUDY STUDY! Good luck...
Compared to other professors teaching lab, Dr. Toto is by far the easiest. He's a fun guy who will help you out but without just giving you the answer. Very friendly guy.
This guy is real. Not only does he bother to go through every lab step by step, but he'll expedite the labs wherever possible. He's a very fair grader, but you've gotta be able to think critically and generate the answer he's looking for - this involves research on your part for each lab write-up. Take Joe, he's great. Don't be stupid in his class.
Amazing! He's super cool to talk to and very available to answer lab questions. He goes through every lab to ensure we don't screw up. Nevertheless, it is often difficult to understand what he expects as far as lab reports go. All in all, very helpful and knowledgeable.
Fair Grader, knows material well.
This teacher is really helpful when it comes to understanding lab. Really easy to talk to.
Lecture slides were terrible. Lecture itself was fine. Homework didn't reflect lecture nor did it prepare you for tests which were hard. Study your text! He does provide old tests online, sometimes provides a key, sometimes not. He seems to enjoy lecturing but meh to the rest and it shows in his lack of organization. I felt very much on my own.
Professor Toto is an easy going kind of guy. He's clear, concise, and tries to have the class end early so everyone can go home (I took his lab on a Friday). His exams are a bit difficult and the labs are sometimes tricky. HAVING GOOD LAB PARTNERS IS KIND OF ESSENTIAL FOR THIS CLASS (THERE ARE MANY GROUP LABS), so be nice and make friends.
read every chapter, do all the sample and examples in the book, get an A. if you go by notes alone you will not get good grades, but his tests are straight to the point scantron. hw online, pretty lenient with late hw. basically put in the work you get a good grade.
His back tests are not helpful. He is unorganized and his lectures are very boring. Definitely stay away for lecture. If you have to take him for lecture, make sure to watch UCI chemistry videos!! they help tons. TAKE HIM FOR LAB!! Very relaxed lab environment and he's more chill. Good guy, just not a great lecturer.
I loved professor Toto's class and him as a person. I took him during the summer, and although it was a lot of material, I felt like I had a really solid comprehension of it all. He was super helpful when asked, and always gives good feedback in lecture and lab. Definitely read the power points and lecture notes he gives you! It will help a lot!
He's an ok lecturer. Read his lecture notes and power points. Do the practice problems and you should pass with at least a C. Going to lecture is kinda pointless because I usually don't understand sh*t so I learn it myself. I wouldn't take him again for lecture but do take him for lab! He's an easy grader in lab and so chill.
Took lab with him and he is one of the nicest professors out there. He explains every lab step by step in detail and even bumps your grade up at the end if you are fairly close to the next grade. 10/10 recommend
He is Mr. Clean without the smile, always in a bad mood. Bad lecturer, avoid him at all cost for lecture, heard he was good for Lab doe.......
Have him for lecture. He got mad that everyone did well on the first exam so then he made the following exams extremely difficult to bring down the class average. He just reads off of powerpoints and doesn't seem to care much about how you're doing in class.
Avoid him for lecture, but do take him for lab.
Here's the deal- 3 midterms varying in difficulty the avg of them is 60% of grade , 20% is homework, last 20% is the final which was online and we had 2.5 days to complete. This material isn't easy, it takes some time to read and practice the problems. Toto is fair, he wants to help you.
I wish I was still in his class because of how much fun it was. Granted if you want to survive in the same room with Toto you really have to be a glutton for punishment, which I am. Do your homework show up to class and go to office ours and ask him questions. It dosn't hurt to bring some money to gamble with either.
Prof Toto seems like a guy who wasn't supposed to be a professor, but he slipped through the cracks and everyone was just like"Ok."
Told us one of our labs were dropped on the first day of the final lab, that was sick, Got out of lab for the final two weeks of school. Tests were online and less than 10 questions. The labs are as easy as any other lab you've taken in ComColl, he has a grader do the grading so be sure they don't take a ton of points for something insignificant.
Super easy professor, however I recommend you don't take him if chemistry is your major. I was able to pass without studying much, the final is online which is great. Homework is worth 1 test which is another plus. Overall he is an average professor and he is super chill.
First time this class had been offered. Class taught by him and Jennifer Snyder. My grade kept dropping because him and the other professor kept changing the weighting of the grade. Tests were not like the study guides. 1 project for him, 1 for the other teacher, 4 tests altogether and one final. Funny and nice professor but class was difficult.
You will have to follow the lab manual regarding how the assignments are completed. Typing them would be best. Always put in effort for the labs that are turned in and write good discussions. The class was very manageable. There are 4 online exams based on the labs. You will work in pairs and groups of 3. He lectures about the lab before its due.
Toto just reads off his powerpoint slides. Also his expos markers never really work so it's better to sit in the front of the class. He doesn't really prepare you for the exams, but his homework are worth enough points where it can raise you a couple %. He also curves his exams, but he can't really teach.. He leaves his classrooms all the time too
Took this class for the summer. Like someone said before, he's Mr. Clean without the smile. His lab class was easy but his lecture class was extremely difficult. I'd avoid him for lecture at all cost. He reads off his powerpoints and somehow still doesn't make sense. Going to lecture is pointless. There are practice test/problems but they dont help
Good reviews were probably to hype him up. Practice test/Hw are not reflective of the actual lecture exam. Avoid him for lecture. Easy in lab though. Overall class really wasn't worth it. Better off with another professor. Constantly in a bad mood and leaves class often. Once during a test, he walked off and someone saw him getting coffee outside..
If chemistry is not your strong suit start looking for another professor. Lectures are not very helpful and don't help on exams. His lab is very easy and straight forward but lecture is near impossible to pass. Really tough grader although he curves it doesn't really help. And be careful when you ask questions he gets annoyed.
Interesting man at best. His tests are NOTHING like the study guides or previous exams. So BEWARE. Textbook is your BEST FRIEND. Look at his notes online. Difficult to study for tests. He curves test grade. Is annoyed when asked him question. His final is easy though, but you have to try HARD. Only got an A in the class because of luck.
Tests were incredibly difficult to study for and attending lecture only helped so much.. what does help is that he CURVES grades. I would possibly take him again but for lab only.
Easiest lab professor I've ever taken. Obviously this course will be hard, but if you compare what other lab professor's assign, Toto is by far the least difficult. All labs can be done w/ a partner and Toto helps w/ calculations. I did not take him for lecture and strongly recommend you do the same. I've seen his tests and they're super difficult.
Recommend him for lab but not lecture. Makes lab easy and not very strict. In lecture he just follows his presentations he already made. The first and third exam are easy but his second exam is insanely hard. If you take him for lecture, study hard for all 3 exams since the final is super easy. Honestly, don't recommend him for lecture.
Professor Toto is a nice guy but his lectures didnt help me at all. He just reads from a PowerPoint and goes way too fast. Chem 201 is hard and he just flies through the ppt. Dry. His exams are challenging. Pretty much everyone is still in the room by the end, meaning no one finished it. He curves though. For me it was a lot of self learning.
Lab was really easy and straightforward, so were the lab reports. Nice guy too
He is very nice and his class is super easy. He is very accessible and also very flexible with the lab reports, which are basically all you have to do for this class.
Great lab instructor. But don't take him for lecture.
Bad lecturer (participation not required) so no one showed up on day two of class; most concluded you'd do better studying online and getting tutors. He's also not friendly when you approach him for help, he will make you feel dumb if you don't get it right away. He also isn't truthful about what is on the final; final is mainly comprehensive.
Professor Toto is a great teacher who will take the time to teach and help you understand Chemistry. He is personable and was very assessable via email, canvas, or even in person. I enjoyed Chemistry with him and would definitely take him again!
Dr. Toto is extremely intelligent. If you put the work in, it is a great class. He is very knowledgeable and is great person to learn from. He is also extremely nice and patient. Taking his class was a great learning experience and also very fun.
Took Joe for both lab and lecture for Chem201. For lab, FANTASTIC, no complaints. But for lecture, I wouldn't recommend him. It's not even that he's a bad teacher but its the fact that his grading scale is ridiculous. Exams are 70% of your grade and he doesn't normally drop any-per the syllabus. If I took him again I'd focus primarily on the exams
Read the textbook before lecture and do textbook problems bc lectures by themselves are not helpful. He will answer questions even if you think he is annoyed with you. Easy lab, non-specific grading and gives generous points. Do homework problems ahead of time because he explains them during class. You will do well if you don't procrastinate.
You can tell he cares about students. He makes a point of letting students know they can come to him during class so that you can ask him questions about anything you don't understand and have problems with. Also available during office hours. Make sure you read though because there is A LOT of material. He'll work with you if you're having issues.
For lab, Toto is an amazing teacher. His class is very laid back. He tells you exactly what you need on each lab report, so pay attention and take note of what he says. For each lab, there is 1 lab report, but it is more of a series of questions than a lab report. Also, time is built into class to write the report. You can also work with a partner!
His class is hard, but doable if you study outside of class. Tests are worth 90%, including the final (10%), none are dropped. The median score on each exam was 69, 74, 81, 88 (final). I am not strong in math, but I watched a lot of YouTube (watch Dr. Paula's videos), and studied for hours. Tests are application based, but he grades easy-ish.
I only took his lab, he is pretty chill however he does not promote lab safety, so make sure to have your protective gear on. He's tough to access outside of class, but great help during lab and gives a lot of feedback when lab is submitted through Canvas. He is very leninent on lab submission, but make sure to not fall behind with labs.
Professor Toto is fun to take and does explain things pretty well, but exams are 80% of your grade and he doesn't really give a good idea on what is on the exam other than to look over the homework and the lecture notes. He can go fast sometimes, but he will answer any questions and throws some jokes during lecture so it isn't completely boring.
Summer Course: Really fast-paced, and is not the greatest lecturer, he does have lecture recordings from previous years. 3 Exams 1 Online Final. Honestly a great human being but you have to put in the work outside of class to get an A.
Summer Class: Lowkey fumbled an A in the class because I didn't turn in 2 lab reports, but he is very open on due dates and is probably the easiest A in lab you could get. Do not procrastinate tho!
Professor Toto is really kind and funny. During his labs he was aways ready to help and answer questions. If you put some effort it's easy to pass his class. He doesn't take points for late assignments.
He will tell u that u dont need to attend lecture but he expects u to act like a responsible student. U NEED TO COME TO LECTURE. He also doesnt have any due dates on assignments. YOU NEED TO TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME! By the end of semester there was 8 people left in lecture. But he really took the time to explain stuff to make sure we got it.
awesomesauce 4 lab, mid 4 lecture. Lecture grading: tests 80%, hw/final each 10%. He's chill in lab and an easy A+ if u turn in all ur lab reports, plus he even tells u how to write them. Fell asleep in lecture a lot, but do a bunch of problems from sample tests/lecture slides. U get a notecard for exams so write eqns and even sample test problems.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR LECTURE TAKE HIM FOR LAB! He is so laid back in lab, no pre/post lab, no quizzes and 1 EASY exam. Easy A Lab if you turn in your work which is all due on the last day of the sem. Easiest lab but he's a terrible lecture professor all he does is yap and soooo much homework in lecture…
Exams are 80%, take home final 10%, and Homework 10% of the grade. There really is no passing this class if you are not a good test taker. Not the best lecturer and homework's have 30-49 Qs. Practice exams are either just like the actual exam or nothing like it, so there's no in between. Choose someone else if available. His lab is easy
Toto is a chill lab instructor who makes the course quite manageable. Labs are straightforward, and he gives clear guidance on reports. Using Unstuck AI and the textbook helped me excel in this class.
joe toto is tough i wont lie. his lecture slides are not the easiest to understand ( i think he's too smart for his own good) however, he is SMART. He knows what he is doing and he can help you with anything you need. he can go fast during lecture and skip explanations but if you ask he will give the best explina. and you will understand. hes sweet
He is super knowledgeable and kind. His lecture style might not fit everyone- I skipped and used videos from outside sources. if you generally understand the hmwk and practice exam you'll be okay. the homework is abt 45 questions on canvas. you get a postcard to bring to exams. his labs are superrrrr easy and good he explains the reports in detail
Prof Toto is very laidback, I enjoyed the labs. He explains everything before performing the experiment so you can actually leave early everyday if you get it. Not an actual exam (it's a lab, I thought it was fun once i finally got it lol) only lab reports and he's okay with make-up labs. Always helps you if you're stuck as long as you show effort.
