smart, totally sexy, fabulous lectures, challenging
i've been here for four years, and prof. velaidum is by far the best!
Very tough marker.
you'll learn more with him than any other class -- cute too!
very intelligent, keeps personal views out of the class and very sexy
fascinating and fun lectures. you'll learn tons and have fun too.
Very well dressed!
A tough but beautiful mind, he may challenge us but he is a great source of wisdom and spirit. Maybe he should get happy more though, it slows him down to our level.
Definately overrated
The best prof at UPEI. He teaches the material with passion. You'll have to study and know the material in order to get a good grade, but this is university, isn't it? We all love to take courses with him and wish all profs could be like him.
very challenging, but excellent prof
Fun to be around...Very intellectual and passionate about his work...it is passed down to his students
An Awesome Professor. His classes are very challenging but that is what we pay for. He is a very down to earth guy who is very smart. Everyone should take a course with him.
Excellent Prof. He's tough but you will learn a great deal from him. As long as you take loads of notes and know the material you'll have no problem with any of his courses.
Awesome lectures, you won't find a better professor. Very smart and cares for his students - he's great.
Horrible, horrible man. Very uninteresting, very disrespectful of PEI, and very, very arrogant. The worst experience at university I ever had.
The person who said that Prof. Velaidum is horrible is very much in the minority. In fact, he's the most interesting and caring prof. we've ever seen around here. THE BEST, simple as that. Makes coming to an 8:30 am class worthwhile.
Dr. Velaidum is one of the only profs that can get u up for an 8:30 class and enjoy it! You learn tons and you have a good time. He's really down to earth and explains diffucult concepts nicely. Very cute too!!!!
Joe is such a down to earth, enlightening guy. He values religion and also critiques it. He smiles and laughs when he lectures. Speaks in plain english. My first class with him was such an eye opener, I took another.
He obviously cares about students, and has passion for the topic. He makes you want to learn and stimulates your interest. Lectures are great!

Dr. Velaidum is a great prof; his lectures are very organized, and you learn a lot when you take his class. He is really accommodating and a genuinely nice person, but he definitely marks papers in an unnecessarily hard way. Other than that, he's a great and effective professor!
My favourite prof by far. Brilliant, insightful, AND cute. Yes, he marks hard, but it's well worth it just to listen to him lecture on religion for an hour and fiteen minutes twice a week. I'm taking my third RS course next semester because of this man and I'm still surprised to hear myself say that.
Fun and interesting. Great class. Velaidum teaches you tons and you have a good time learning. Great examples in lectures helps you understand hard material.

Joe Velaidum has an insight into religion that is impossible to not be blown away by. He has a passion for his subject, his students and the university experience. If one puts in the required effort, he will be rewarded. Every lecture stays with you.
Excellent, funny and interesting!
I absolutly loved Velaidum, he was a great teacher a fun person and was always very interesting. Plus he's as cute as a button. His class is the first one i signed up for next year.

I can't say he cares much for the students. The forced laughs are obvious. I know he doesn't care for female students. I'm not sure how he qualifies to teach Religion when he's a modern Philosophy guy? He doesn't know religious issues.
This course was great. Velaidum is interesting, and has a great teaching method. The Oral exam was a good experience and he is very easy to talk to. The material was stimulating and Velaidum just has an excellent way of making you think! I found he was a good professor and not bad to look at either!
Cool prof, but his oral test was rediculous. I did well with in one of his classes (85) however in a course I just took recently, Christian Ethics, I received a 65% because I bombed is oral interview. I don't recommend taking his class if he is marking 50% on an oral interview. He is a nice guy who is interesting and very funny.
he's quite the cat - that i'll give him....
I took his online lecture course, Myths of Hate and Evil. I was really nervous for the oral exam, but I made it worth 100%. It really wasn't that bad. I was nervous at the beginning, but by the end it felt more like a conversation. I thought it was a good experience.
Very energetic. Good professor. Good sense of humour.
He was really cool and interesting, but his lectures could be a bit vague sometimes. He also caps his courses... I don't agree with that.
One of the best profs I ever had but in recent years got lazy - moodles and oral exams - for shame. Also, leaving the university to start a business - why the Ph.d?
Lazy prof, who could have potential but doesn't bother. Self absorbed.
Myths of love, sex and marriage is my lowest mark of the semester. Grade is based on two exams with 50 multiple choice during only 16 minutes and an essay that you have an hour to write. Ridiculous. Would not recommend this course to anyone.
I took meaning of life and myths of hate and evil with him and hated it. His emails aren't helpful whatsoever and his tests are too short for time! He was awful. I tried asking a few questions and he was so vague and avoided answers. I would NEVER take his classes again. The work isn't hard just vague sometimes.
Took all his online courses. They are the best classes at UPEI.
Answers emails very quickly. Interesting class - straightforward. Best online courses I've ever taken. highly recommend.
Took 103 after taking RS104 last year (myths of hate and evil). Great elective, particularly because of its early exam which helps lighten the load at the end of the semester. Joe's lectures can be long and hard to pay attention for, but if you do he's clear in his explanations. Tests are tough but fair, same for his essays.
Take all his online courses. Best classes I've taken as electives. Really professionally done. Interesting topics. Strightforward grading.
These courses (this one plus RS 103, 104 and 212) are the best courses I've ever taken. They are very interesting and thoughtful. Also, the grading system is so straightforward. If you do the work and study you can do well. He also spent hours helping me with my writing for a completely different prof's class!
Only 2 exams both worth 50%. He never states what's on either exam and there is so much course content its impossible to study all the right things. I studied a lot but his tests were quite hard. my friends and I agree we would not take another class with him.
The course is very straightforward and presented nicely. He's very patient with questions. Everything is explained in clearly as well. Great material and fair tests. All in all, a great class. I am planning on taking all of his online classes.
I'm a science student and LOVE these electives. The material is great and makes you think. Tests are straightforward. Love it. He's also really nice and approachable. Beats having to sit in on other boring arts classes.
Myths of Hate and Evil, is a really interesting and well thought out class. With Joe, there are only set dates for the exams, no homework, no quizzes and you can do the chapters on your own time. Because of this, the exams are 50% each or you can do one big one worth 100%. The material is easy to follow but hard to choose what is "important".
I really loved this class, the material was super interesting and being marked on just two exams really makes this a great elective. There is a lot of reading involved and you have to watch the video lectures if you want to do well. One downside is that its hard to really know what is important or what to take notes on from the lectures.
Joe is a great prof, he was really understanding when i couldnt make one of the tests due to a family emergency and let me write the following week. As long as you answer the chapter questions at the end of each section (which are VERY straight forward) you will be well equipped for the tests. Easy to get a good mark in this class.
This class was simple in terms of grading. There were two tests which had two long answers questions and then 2 sets of chapter questions one which accompanied the chapters on each test. The chapter questions were easy but the tests were fairly challenging you are able to have your notes and the textbook so he is looking for in depth answers.
Online class with a required e-textbook ($100). 9 chapters, respond to the discussion questions at the end of each. One final grade for your submission of all the questions and self-reflection at the end. Overall, easy elective, going to be taking his classes again.
Gives bad grades and so strict
Not bad not good
Never failed a course in my life and this is my first :)
Bad professor, bad explanation and very awful grading
Hes so bad
Graded by only one assignment and gave me an undeserved grade
how in this world is it possible for someone to score 10% for the overall grade in his courses? I did everything he asked for
very worst proff. marking is too tough would not suggest anyone to take his courses if you want save your money.
Never seen a strict professor like him
Made us buy his book (120$) Gave us only one assignment worth 100% of the overall Strict Grader I followed all the rubrics and still managed to get 45% as an overall grade
Never failed a course before this one. 1 assignment is 100% of the mark without any real guidelines or instructions. Don't take his class
what a joke proffessor
Awful Grading. The firs course I ever failed in my life. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSES
Absolutely ridiculous grading. With the amount of students failing his courses, I am surprised he has not been fired yet. But of course, UPEI just wants your money and does not care about you or your future. Hope this prof honestly gets a grip and stops treating his students like numbers in a system. Never take a course with this poor excuse.
I took RS1040 (online) this past summer. The course material was very interesting. He gave us an opportunity to have early informal feedback. Answered all my questions. Is not a tough grader (fair grader) so as long as you don't use AI or cheat, he is fair. I will take more of his online classes for sure.
This prof has the best classes at UPEI. I take them as my electives. Very interesting. Straight-forward testing.
Online class. 2 tests (mid term and final - essay style and he gives you some choices). He was very helpful when I had questions. Grading is fair.
I took it in the summer when I was living back home. The course is flexible. Prof is on-the-ball.
I liked the online lectures. They were really good. The text is good too.
Two essay-style tests. A mid-term and a final. If you do the work, then they are not too difficult.
One of my favourite classes so far. The only thing I didn't like was how quickly the summer courses go so you have to stay on top of things.
I think he may be one of the only profs who really understands how much AI is being used by students and he catches many of them. Not many profs are catching students. I took the live test option so it wasn't a problem for me. Good elective. Take it.
Overall I would say he is pretty easy going if you put some effort. Answered my questions very quickly. One of the better profs at UPEI and the course was very clear.
I took this in the summer. It is a perfect elective for me because I'm working in the summer and the course lets me work at my own pace. 2 live tests with options. The prof told me he was moving to live tests because the use of AI was getting out of hand with online assignments and essays. I will take another next summer with him if I can.
I just finished this class (summer course and online). It's really interesting and Prof Velaidum was really helpful when I had questions.
Interesting class and I learned a lot.
Answered my questions really quickly. Seems very nice. 2 tests (live) and they are not hard if you do the work.
I think his courses are the most popular at UPEI. It was interesting to learn this stuff.
My favourite I've taken so far. He's very approachable and nice.
He gave me the best feedback on my writing than I've ever received from any other prof (and I'm an English major). He was very helpful. I wish I took him in first year.
You have to purchase his book, which costs about 110 CAD. I didn't have to purchase the other main course except this, and his course just consists of two tests, which account for 50% each. Do not register for this if you require a free elective. FYI, his course is an online class with an in-person exam.
This professor is not the type that you want… he makes you buy his own book which is over 100 dollars and is basically a Google slide show. Two quizzes sum up your mark which are in person while everything else is online including that you are teaching everything to yourself as he provides no instruction. Do not take his class, you will regret it.
This prof was very difficult to deal with, when I sign up for an online course I expect online assignments/tests not ON THE WEEKEND/IN-PERSON WORTH 50% EACH EXAMS. He never responded to my questions via emails either. And worst of all his book, he makes you spend a $115 on his own text book.
It's a great elective. It's an asynchronous course. It's really well laid out and clear. He had live tests, but options if you couldn't make it to them. Textbook was great (and it's clear that he isn't the author of it).
Although the material was fascinating, two written tests with unclear directions determined your grade. Additionally, you must pay $123.00 for an online book that you will not be able to keep throughout your time at university, but is mandatory for the course.
This is my third class with this professor. Overall, they are are great classes and he's always helpful when you have questions.
Overall it is very straightforward. Two live tests or an alternate if you can't make the tests. He has a grading rubric and has a list of important topics and ideas you should know. If you put in the time it is not difficult to get a decent grade. The material is very cool. I suggest you take it if you like thinking about bigger ideas.
I just finished this class. It was great! Looking forward to taking more from this prof.
Class is designed nicely. It is clear and if you do the work and follow his instructions to be sure you know the key ideas he outlines, it's not difficult. I liked the topics he covers.
This term I finished my UPEI degree by taking all three of his online classes while working full time. They were great! I loved the flexibility of starting my job in the U.S while finishing my degree remotely. These classes are really good and he was really helpful when I had a few issues this term.
This course worked really well for me. However, if you procrastinate or try to get through by not doing the work like you can in many other courses, you won't do so well. Answered emails quickly, even on weekends.
Joe was really helpful when I needed help. I would take him again for sure.
I got an injury and was hospitalized. He came to the hospital to visit me! It's not even my major and no other prof came to visit me. He was so thoughtful. I love his classes.
I wasnt sure what to expect from this class but I ended up loving it! The material was very interesting, and as long as you are able to put some thought into your responses on the exams you will do fine. My only con is not being able to keep the textbook after buying it, but overall I recommend this prof and this class.
Truthfully, I took it because it is online and fit my busy work schedule. But I will now say it was my favourite courses at UPEI. It changed the way I think about life. Glad I took it.
I think he's great. I've taken 4 courses. The classes seem very large and everyone I know takes at least one of his online classes. If you aren't self-motivated then maybe it's not for you because he treats you like an adult and expects you to follow instructions (not hard to do since everything is clearly explained).
50% mid term and 50% final. If you know the key ideas and concepts found in the material and put some time and effort into it, you can do well. He seems very approachable. I hope our school gets some kind of online proctoring system so that the tests can be online because everyone I know uses AI for essays and online tests these days.
Grading was not fair and whole class grade was based off of one thing.
In my opinion I would not take him again. Grade is determined of one paper at the end of the semester. Self taught, not classes, lectures, slides, anything other than the online text what is overpriced (but what uni textbook isn't, that's not on him)
My favourite class at UPEI so far. Interesting material and he give good reminders. His classes are have massive numbers so enrol early is my advice. Wish there were more like these classes.
The class itself is very interesting and honestly the textbook is a very enjoyable and thought provoking read, however, I would strongly not recommend this class due to the heavy subjectivity in the grading scheme. A class based on superficial content which docks points for having answers too superficial, be ready to colour within the lines.
Really interesting and he gave me great feedback. Gives a lot of sample answers and a grading rubric so I knew what to expect.
I didn't know what to think at first about taking an asynchronous class, but it was so great! The course is really well structured and interesting. If you have good time management skills, you'll do just fine. I'm going to take all of the courses he offers if they are like this one.
As an adult student and single mother, I loved the course format because it fit my work and kids' schedules. Many younger students might not realize how important this course is in today's world. Overall, Professor Velaidum was supportive and engaging.
I found the material really amazing and the course structure was great.
took both his classes this semester and they are the two best courses taken so far at UPEI
