Its still early, but Prof. Venosa definately has a lot of passion in the lectures already. He expects a lot of writing but seems like a nice guy. The powerpoints are also good.
Professor Venosa has very organized lectures and helpful powerpoints overall, and he actually posts them online after class. He sometimes uses big words, but he's very nice and wants effort above all. He's also got a NY accent also.
I've taken alot of history classes and Venosa is by far the most passionate and interesting teacher. The powerpoints are good but its his lecture style that I like a lot. The readings are OK but sometimes they are a bit confusing, especially the primary sources. I'm taking another class in the spring and hope its as good as this survey.
Lots of reading but the lectures aren't that bad. Wasn't a lot of testing on the actual material more so on readings and maps. Map quizzes were a pain
At first glance he seems rough around the edges, but Venosa really is a nice and very helpful professor. The assignments are very clear and his lectures are organized and funny. sometimes he even uses sound effects in the lectures. if you come to class and take notes and study then its an easy A.
Venosa isnt a bad teacher, he isn't the best either. The class is relatively interesting for a history class…he does try!! There are only 3 tests including the final. The essays and reading responses are hard. I don't even think he knows what he is looking for in them. There is a mock trial which was a lot of fun. Do the reading and your good
venosa is a great teacher. people who say he's too hard just aren't willing to put the work in… he gives 3 tests and he gives you a study guide for them at least a week in advance and it gives you all the possible terms that will be on the test, and the exact essay questions you choose from on the test AND you can use a note card. he's a great prof
He never gave us a test, it was all essays some take home some in class, all pretty straightforward. He gives pop quizzes which were usually really hard and everyone failed. He also gives super easy map quizzes. History bores me but he made it bearable, other than his pop quizzes I enjoyed the class.
Venosa is a great teacher and definitely is passionate about history. His tests consist of 5 random definitions you have to write out and then one essay that counts for the majority of the grade. Just study a lot and you'll do good.
One of my favorite professors at SU. Passionate, approachable, cares about his students, and always willing to help. Doesn't grade easily (if you're looking for an easy class, this might not be for you), but is always willing to talk to you, and help you out. Recommend!
Dr. Venosa is a terrible grader. He expects 300-400 level work out of a 102 level class. All of his tests are based on analysis. He assigned a "book review", but what it turned out to be was a book report that was like a high school assignment. Completely Pointless. And all of his Powerpoints are copied from someone else and full of typos
As a non-history person but with some interest in World War II, I thought this was a fantastic class once we got to the 1900s. Before that the material was kind of dry. Venosa has a ton of passion and really wants you to do well if you put in the work. His jokes can be boring, but he was a great teacher overall.
Dr. Venosa is one of the most passionate and fun history teachers at SU. I took this class as a senior but wish I had taken it much earlier. It was a challenging but fun way to look at world history. If you go and discuss the exam essay questions he will take the time to help you plan them out.
He's really cool, young, and knows a lot. There's a lot of reading to do, and most of it is mandatory for class discussions and some rare pop quizzes. There's quite a bit of essays and reports to write that may seem challenging, but he's a lenient grader. I'd take him again. Definitely not an easy A, have to work for it.
Dr. V is gives a lot of reading assignments and busy homework assignments. He's a bit of a tough grader but if you do the work and go to his office hours you shouldn't have a problem. You definitely need to do the homework to pass. But very approachable and friendly. Would recommend, just be ready to work.
dr. Vensoa is an extremely intelligent professor, and expects a lot out of students. gives you all the information you need for the exams. If you can write a good essay you'll do fine. class requires a lot of reading which really isn't too bad. would definitely take him again
Dr. Venosa's lectures are completely natural and with very real passion. He loves history and it shows in the lectures. The topics can be dense but as long as you follow the lecture in class and do the readying then you can follow the narrative. I wish that he offered the premoden Middle East course.
Dr. Venosa is one of a kind. He is a very intelligent professor that is passionate about what he teaches. He doesn't expect you to regurgitate facts, but wants you to understand and think critically about the major themes of history.. As long as you do the readings and attend class, you'll do fine. Phenomenal teacher, and an interesting class.
A lot of discussions on in class presentations and outside reading. LOTS of reading to do, including videos and a movie to watch. Very easy to understand, and very willing to answer your questions and help you with whatever you need. You can get away with not doing the reading, but not recommended.
Loved Dr. Venosa! Would definitely take him again! You do have a lot of readings to do but I didn't do them and still got an A in the class! Just go back and look for quotes in the books for your papers. Make sure you go to class! I always went because his lectures are very interesting anyway. Favorite professor so far! Wants students to do well.
Venosa was great. His lectures are interesting and informative. He gives a lot of busy work in the form of reading and videos to watch outside of class and expects you to come in prepared to discuss them so be ready. Otherwise, very approachable and friendly if you go to his office hours and ask for help. I would highly recommend.
Dr. Venosa is an amazing professor. His lectures are unscripted and he shows a passion for the subject matter. There is a lot of reading but his lectures clarify the material. The papers are a bit hard but he tells you exactly what is expect. You must go to class as he explains a lot during his lectures. Definitely recommend taking him!
Amazing professor! Requires to do a lot of reading, but you can get away with not doing most of it. He's very passionate about what he's teaching and wants everyone to do well. 2 papers, 3 exams. Take him if you can!
A great teacher who is very enthusiastic about what he is teaching. Every lecture was very interesting and attention grabbing. The readings/homework were also often very interesting and gave a deeper look into the topics he would talk about in class
Dr. Venosa is a very fun and engaging professor. His lectures are like family stories with lots of jokes. He really cares about students and wants you to do well if you put in the effort. I'd definitely take another history class like this if I could. Just remember to show up to class on time....
Awesome teacher!! He makes learning history enjoyable. Requires his students to do readings for weekly discussions and also assigns videos. He's very passionate about teaching. Do not take your phone out EVER or he will call you out in front of the whole class.
Venosa is a truly fantastic professor. Smart and witty, funny and a bit charismatic. Extremely tough grader, and his exams can be a bit brutal. Would take him again. Still plan to visit his office twice a month. OH YEAH, GET READY TO READ LIKE SIX BOOKS A SEMESTER. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
One of the best professors I've had here. He's really interested and passionate about what he teaches, and he definitely cares about how well you do in this class. Would recommend him for History 103.
Dr. Venosa is the best teacher I've had at Salisbury!! So great that I took him for History 102 and now History 103. He gives extra credit, is super understanding and caring, and has clear grading criteria. He has two lectures a week and discussions on Friday's which are really fun and make the information stick, making exams easy.
Dr. Venosa is one my favorite teachers here.. I hate history and just took this class for a gen ed and it ended up being one of my favorite classes! His tests are lecture heavy, you have to take notes.. He gives out a ton of extra credit.. 35 points for this past semester which really help your grade! Gives out study guides very similar to tests
Gives lots of reading assignments each week including short novels or lenghty articles
He requires a tons of reading that most of the students do not complete, but would be helpful. He knows his subject and is very enthusiastic. Be prepared to always be lecturesd with minimal discussion and group work. He teaches by lecture. Overall nice man!
Dr. Venosa is someone who truly cares about history and is well knowledged in it. Weekly discussions added to the notes and ultimately prepare you for the test.. great professor who truly cares about his students and willing to always discuss grades.
He is a really good teacher and a great person however, he is a very tough grader when it comes to the exams. You have to memorize 50+ terms and write an essay in specific details. Other then that the class is very interesting and enjoyable but make sure as soon as you get the study guide you begin working on it!
The class really requires the reading but if your pay attention in lecture, its an easy A. Hes so much fun to listen to
I went from an English to a history major after two of Venosa's classes. He has dense but entertaining readings and his lectures are like family stories I like how he relates to students from non-traditional backgrounds really well
Venosa is a very down to earth guy, his class (103) covers very interesting topics and you can tell he is super passionate about what he teaches. His exams are very difficult though, he gives out a study guide but it is very in depth and covers a lot of terms. Make sure you study for exams and youll enjoy the class.
I have always hated History, but Venosa is so passionate about what he teaches and he makes learning the material so easy. He gives out study guides one to two weeks in advance, and he can discuss your study guide answers before the test. Best professor I've had at this school.
Dr. Venosa is hilarious and really knows how to connect with the students, he does give pop quizzes which sucks because theyre short answers and nobody ever passes them and he has no homework except for reading so its hard to get an A but he gives multiple extra credit opportunities and doesnt want you to fail. Hes awesome though
Horrible class. Discussions are horribly put together. Extremely tough grader. I am normally an A student but I got a C- in this class. Do not take History 103 with Venosa!
I wish I had more history teachers like Venosa in HS because he is so engaging and passionate that I wanted to really learn the material. He is big on participation and is very good at putting challenging topics into a simple story. Can't wait to take his Africa class next year but his handwriting needs work!!
If I would've had Venosa as my history professor in high school I would've learned so much more, and had an overall more enjoyable experience. He's very knowledgeable, funny, and his lectures are really engaging. It's a lot of reading/watching documentaries, etc. But if you keep up with it, you'll do fine on the discussions and tests.
Venosa is a real inspiration. He brings tons of passion to each lecture but is also very laid back with students. I had no background in African history but I feel like I learned years worth of stuff from both the lecture and discussions and also liked the outside readings. Would definitely recommend
hes a fantastic professor. he values everyone's opinions on class topics, makes it very easy to understand, hes really funny and laid back, and very accessible. as long as you show up, take good notes, and participate in discussions, you will have no problem getting through the class, and hes very willing to help.
Dr Venosa has inspired me to want to actually change my major! His class is so eye opening! Ive learned so much about different cultures, past events and current events and he doesnt ask much of his students! I learned so much and loved to come home and tell my fam and friends about our history!! 10/10 for sure!
Dr. Venosa is the best professor I have ever had. I dread history classes because I find them boring, but his class was extremely interesting and engaging. He makes you think about things in different ways and truly is an inspiring teacher. TAKE HIM! (study for exams though rip)
He is a great person! He knows what he is talking about and the lectures are never boring. Although the tests can be kind of hard, if you study for them you will do fine. You are expected to read a lot outside of class (i never did) and watch documentaries where you have a lot of in class discussion, which i hated the most. Great guy though!
The class is insanely difficult because you're expected to study a whole continent instead of just one country. He does his best to make things understandable and is a really genuine guy. Venosa is a tough grader on exams and papers but offered lots of extra credit. Do the readings. Extremely hard class, but I learned a lot and I'm glad I took it!
I have taken Dr Venosa for three classes. I have not met a teacher whos combined passion and knowledge on topics exceed Venosa's. The classes are simply lectures (take notes!) and supplemental reading. His grading is fair. He is excited to speak w students outside class and wishes their success. He is THE scholar on African History & Politics at SU
Dr. Venosa is the best history teacher I've ever had. He is so passionate about the subject and makes his lectures interesting and engaging. He is very funny and keeps you entertained all class. He does assign readings every week, but they're usually pretty interesting. This class is an easy A if you put in the effort.
Dr. Venosa is a wonderful professor, easy to work with, helpful, hard grader but will work with you if you show effort. HE wants you to pass his classes. I have taken him twice.
Dr. Venosa is the type of teacher who is passionate about his class. When it comes to grading, he is pretty clear. If you do not meet certain standards, you will not get that grade. YOU MUST READ!!!! I took his race and conflict class, and it was very interesting. Do not be lazy with your work, or you will get a lazy grade. Humorous and he's cool.
Very engaging and very cool professor. Challenging but will work with you if you show effort. Very good professor, would absolutely recommend.
Such an amazing teacher. Very educated and passionate about the topic, which made me want to learn more. His syllabus lays out the work, readings, and deadlines for each week up until the final, so print that out to keep track, and definitely take notes on his lectures. He's also helpful if you have any questions or concerns.
Dr. Venosa is passionate about history. He uses lectures, graphic written accounts & photos to cover historical events and eras that many history teachers avoid. Examples are genocide in Nazi Germany & other countries & race-based violence such as lynching, rapes, & murders of African Americans in the US. I appreciate his frank uncensored approach.
U can tell he is passionate ab history but some things changed from the syllabus and there was only a few graded things to begin with, he definitely helped me out cause I think I shouldve failed lol but talk to him outside of class for help/participate in discussions/do the readings/ watch videos/ pay attention to his lectures and youll be fine
He is def knows what he is talking about when it comes to history! Never bored
Dr. Venosa is one of my favorite professors. He is passionate about what he teaches and cares about his students. Be sure to participate in the discussions/attend class and you'll learn tons. If you're a good, responsible student and ask him when you have questions, you'll do great. Just don't be rude or he WILL call you out in front of the class.
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR AT SALISBURY!! SO CARING
Mr. Venosa is very passionate about his classes and the subjects he teaches. However, there are discrepancies in his syllabus and in his grading. He states that attendance does not matter in his syllabus but he still grades you on it. Little to no remorse for students who have other things going on outside his class.
Dr. Venosa is so knowledgeable and funny. He is extremely intelligent and always wants to help you learn. He really makes his class enjoyable and makes you want to learn. I love his lectures. Make sure you do all the reading!
Venosa's very good at sharing information and a very realistic professor and will tell people that something will make or break a grade, though nothing's graded that harshly. I had to use his brain for another class and he was more than happy to sit with me for an hour to talk about a topic unrelated to his class
Hands down the best professor I have had so far. There are no tests, the final and midterm were both take home essays that you were given two weeks to complete. This class is very heavy on reading and writing so if thats your thing you will love it. Dr. Venosa was funny and engaging.
Dr. Venosa is one of my favorite professors at SU!! The syllabus said what had to be done each week. His midterm and final were essays and take home. He gave you two-three weeks to write them. If you answer each part of the prompts, you had a guaranteed B on them. There was a participation and attendance grade which was worth 100 points.
Venosa is a incredible public speaker and he teaches a bunch of interesting and edgy topics in the pan-African class...the 20th century reading section is very very HEAVY but he helped break down the theoretical concepts during the class. Funny lecturer as well.
Venosa is easily my favorite history teacher at SU. He's very easy going and wants people to be interested even if they're not that into history topics. The reading can be really really heavy and dark but it is interesting. I think a textbook would be more helpful than just smaller books at times but his race and identity class is worth it.
Take Dr. Venosa if you can! Easliy one of the best history teachers at SU. There are not really many homework assignments, mostly just readings which do not typically take that long. The midterm and final are essays but, he gives you 2-2.5 weeks to work on them! Beware he does sometimes give out pop quizes that are follow ups of the hw readings.
This is my second time taking this professor. He tends to reuse material for lectures between his classes. He is very passionate about his lectures and seems to care about his students. Overall a pretty easy course.
Easy class, clear lectures and uploaded slides so you can take notes directly on them. Midterm and final were a bit brutal, but if you paid attention in class you'll be fine. Don't completely BS the papers, he makes sure they at least make sense. Rarely any homework
Dr. Venosa is a very cool professor and very easy to work with. I highly recommend taking his classes. His lectures are great.
If I could take only his classes, I would. He truly is one of the best educators I have ever had. He is super willing to work with you and his lectures are so informative and attention grabbing. As long as you read what he assigns in class and you show up, you are basically guaranteed an A.
I'm not a history person, but his lectures made me want to attend class. He is very passionate & leads discussions throughout the semester. You will read multiple books & have in-class discussions. Mid-term & final are based off writing a multi-page essay along with identifying specific terms. I loved every second & if you show up, you'll get an A.
Take him if you get the chance! I took his online course and it was slight. His lectures are amazing. I'm not a history person but I enjoyed this class. You learn about very interesting topics of which some you've probably never heard about. Very few assignments and if you put in the work, you will get an A!
Great guy, good lectures, always willing to help
I've taken him twice, he def deserves the rating he has here. He's gracious, understanding, an overall awesome human being, (get ready for dadjokes, no... for real. they're cringey, but his self-awareness makes them funny). If you can take one of his classes, DO IT! He truly cares about the subject but also about his students, and he's my fave!
Venosa does a great job of making the lectures and discussions mix well with the different readings, especially primary sources. He's got a relaxed style and knows how to engage a very big class that kept my attention all of the time. Overall a great class and experience.
Dr. Venosa is a great professor. You can tell he's very passionate about his work and he also cares a lot.
Dr. Venosa is genuinely passionate, not only about his work but about connecting with his students and being open to discussion both in and out of the classroom. Just a very genuine and lax guy. Tests are rare and the material is super interesting and he makes it very digestible. History Majors should definitely take his classes.
hes a funny guy and hes super smart. the only thing is he doesnt answer his emails! hes passionate which makes it so much easier to learn. id take his class again. i think the tests we take are pretty hard but he provides a study guide. i wish he provided the chance to take notes more. but all in all i love him and hes super interesting to talk to
Clearly passionate about the course information, does a great job organizing the lectures and giving the class enough time to take in all the information. The reading that is asked to be done is very accessible and easy to get through. Tests are fair and should be easy as long as you put aside time to study.
Took his FYS Empathy and Dehumanization. Class had lots of semester long assignments that you could decide when you do however, would recommend you do them ASAP. Assignments are simple as long as you don't wait till last second. Posts powerpoints but they are basically a few pictures that he explains in class so attendance is important.
By far the BEST professor I've ever had. He cares so much about the topics he teaches and when you're engaged in his class it is so eye opening and really makes you think. I hate history and I looked forward to his class everyday. If you have the opportunity to take his class, TAKE IT!!
Great professor. Engaging lectures and makes an effort to converse with and get to know each student.
Easily my favorite history teacher after three years. Lectures are entertaining but he also assigns good readings that are not boring. Very clearly cares about student learning and gives study guides that lay out everything. Have taken twice and wish I could take again.
