Avoid at all costs. This man is the dullest thing ever. He rants on and on and on about Aristotle's Poetics in EVERY lecture. He babbles on about his own "life experiences" a lot too. Students all find him mindnumbingly inane.
I think he might be better if he taught grad students. He's not very good at teaching undergraduate classes.
There is one good thing about J. Wenderoth: he went off on George Bush in class. I learned nothing about poetry in this class, which is bad when its a prerequisite for the English major. He can not teach communicate well with students.
Get out, get out now! This man is insanely boring, very unclear, and ridiculously hard to follow. If you are hoping to learn anything about poetry, avoid this professor! We have yet to talk about meter, diction, or any real poetic elements!
Yes...GET OUT NOW! This has to be the worst class I have ever taken. The more help I got from him and the TA's the worse I did, and needed this class for my major. Take poetry from someone else. I worked so hard and didn't get anywhere! Very frustrating.
This class was, without a doubt, the most influencial and critical class I've ever taken in my life. Joe Wenderoth changed the way I think about poetry, art, and life. He is an absolute genius and a brilliant teacher, if you are up for a challenge.
Genius. Any professor who wears a POISON t-shirt is a fan of mine. Plus, he doesn't hold back his thoughts. If your writing sucks, he says, "Your writing sucks."
avoid this teacher like the plague. extremely unclear on what he wants. very opinionated and loves to spread his political agenda into the classroom, where it doesnt belong. he has an aura of aragance and self rightousness. i learned nothing. i left the class more confused about poetry than before
SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS. I took this class last spring and I'm still recovering. I pulled off an A-, but ONLY because of my TA. All I have to say is: JOE WENDEROTH, SUCK IT. Oh, and try wearing something other than a basketball jersey with hippie pants, you poop.
Wenderoth is a nice guy, but is really better off teaching upper division classes. He made what could've been a fascinating experience into something that was quite dreadful. Similar to the person who posted before me, the only reason I got a good grade was because I had a great TA.
The man is very intelligent, but he is still figuring out his teaching tactics. Difficult course and even harder material. If you NEED to take his class, make sure you spend a quality amount of time in his office hours. The class is interesting for the philosophy, not the poetry.
He was really difficult to approach, inappropriate and rude.
Avoid at all costs. I've never had such an unprofessional, self-involved and self-promoting professor in my life. I really don't care about his own books, which he spent more time promoting than teaching.
I think he's getting a bad wrap...he's a hard professor to rate because he is smart, interesting and funny, but also arrogant, standoffish and cmplicated. Lectures are insightful, class is complex, but had a way of linking ideas that could be mind blowing.
His class is pretty boring most of the time since it's mostly lecture based. Things didn't really work out when he tried to incorporate class discussion. sometimes he goes ff on weird tangents. He assigns random assignments which he may or may not collect. The essays are pretty open (meaning there's really no prompt) and there's no final.
Best English teacher at Davis handsdown, anyone who doesn't like him ... doesn't understand him. The class material is really interesting and he is a really cool guy. I take whatever classes he offers.
If you open yourself up to different ways of thinking, Wenderoth will be one of the most rewarding teachers you can have. He really challenges his students, and I think that's part of why some people don't like him. If you _choose_ to learn from him, you will learn -- a lot.
Do NOT take any of his classes. He is definately the WORST instructor ever. I've had extremely hard upper division instructors who actually made sense, or tried to make sense. Wenderoth doesn't even try. And unfortunately u must agree with everything he says to get a passing grade on the essays. Bull. He's full of bull.
Likes to babysit the class by having the students write summaries of all the readings which he collects randomly (such a waste of time. He doesn't like Christians, which is fine, we live in America and he has that right, but he has no regard for the Christians that are sitting in his class that he is bashing. He needs to show respect to all people
monotonous, dull lectures. unengaging personality. attendance is taken each class & you have to write something for each class because he sproradically collects assignments to ensure that you're doing the reading. advertises his own books; reads excerpts during class; monumentally stifling.
The thing about Joe is how he teaches as opposed to what he's teaching. When I had him for ENL 42 (Approaches to Reading), he was great. The goal of that class was more open-ended and gave him an opportunity to really use his outside-the-box style. But when I got him for 146N, it was worse, since that course forces him into a style not his own.
This class is extremely dull! Throughout the entire class I had no idea what was goin on. Wenderoth only cares about his own opinion and doesn't care about anyone else's. There are only 2 papers. However, the final was cumulative (you can use books and notes). I had no idea what to expect. Boring class! BLAH!
Easily the most shaming experience in a class I have ever had. His lectures are useless and his ideas are about as pretentious as could be. He should resign as soon as possible and join an assembly line.
While he often acts as if he doesn't care for opinions other than his own, he was willing to hear them your opinions if there was a basis for them. For example, he didn't agree with my stance in one of my papers, but I still managed to get an A. For the most part, he is insightful and humorous, and there are a lot worse professors out there.
Wenderoth is more beatnik poet than he is English professor. His grading is unclear and confusing, his lecturing is pretentious and long-winded (he loves to hear himself talk), and his opinions are heavily biased. Steer clear of this one; I made the mistake of giving him a chance and paid the price with a miserable quarter.
He is the most down to earth, ghetto style professor ever. He likes old country and blues, and is mean to stupid people- which I appreciate. He is "weird" but once you understand him he will seem like a genius. He inspired me tremendously. There needs be more professors like him, instead of polite ****es.
An odd, odd man, but also the most insightful (in a revolutionary sort of way) professor I've ever had at UC Davis. Unless you are a weak-minded sloth, you will think about his lectures and appreciate his comments for months after the class ends. The strong should take him.

He's VERY strange. His writing prompts are 1-2 pages long and don't really have a point, but he seems not to care if you don't follow what he wants written. He's ridiculously egotistical at times, though he's also self-deprecating. Like I said, he's weird.
Quirky, sure, but CREATIVE in his manner and matter. Everyone needs a challenge!
Smart reader of my poetry. He helped me a lot.
this guy thinks he is god's gift to earth.
Tough but puts an unorthodox spin on topics, i.e., in his American Lit. (1900-1945) class he deliberately excluded Pound and Eliot and highlighted lesser noted authors like Zora Neale Hurston. Some may translate his contrarianism into "egotism," but I appreciated his efforts to break with some literary tradition in his creative and classroom work.
if you want to take a boring, not fun, and hard class, then this professor is for you. He did not get me interested in the class one bit, he even made it more unbearable. Extremely harsh grader. Would never ever recommend this course to anyone!!
PROUD
Joe Wenderoth made travelling 6,000 miles to study at Davis absolutely worth it. He is a genius, a self-proclaimed "grotesque", and Joe demands the kind of existential thought about the nature of reality that coming to college is all about. Don't take this class if you want to be spoonfed
take this class if you want a professor who can explain every reading by drawing a stick figure and a tree inside of a circle on the chalk board...that pretty much sums it up... he is way out there in left field on his subjects and makes everything way harder than it needs to be. try not to take this class with him.
he makes everything confused, quite boring, and is very jugdemental and proud
This has been the most engaging and thought-provoking class I have taken at UCD. The lectures and readings are refreshingly different. His style of teaching is avant-garde, so if you want a professor who talks at you for two hours, don't take a class with him. We're lucky to have him at Davis.
It is often quite difficult to keep up with this class--both intellectually and in the sense that it tends to be quite boring. judging by the responses, approximately ten people in the class have any idea what is going on. I really wish I had paid attention to the previous ratings.
Joe Wenderoth really helped me understand what modernist literature is all about. The class is not easy, and many of the concepts explained are highly theoretical and philosophical which I think explains the number of bad reviews here, but assuming you are up for the challenge I highly recommend taking one of his classes.
The previous comments sum it up pretty well. Either you get it or you don't. Half of the class I found to be very out there and confusing, the novel half was much better. The papers are not too bad, a bit confusing. He grades fair, though I do not recommend this class if you have a hard time following theories, Aristotle etc etc.
Someone else mentioned that he's a complicated fellow. Yes. Arrogant, proud, loves to hear himself talk. But also hilarious, talented, interesting, and smart. If you are up for it, he'll really help push your writing. You don't have to buy everything he says. Just enjoy it, listen a bit, don't get offended. Your writing might widen if you allow it.
I think that if you can somehow navigate your way around his enormous ego, then there is a lot you can learn from him. I can see how it would be easy to not like him, but he's a pretty good guy. I liked the class a lot.
First of all, this professor is extremely intelligent, and if you don't understand what he's talking about then you need to work harder. Trust me, it's worth it. To be in one of his classes is great because, if you care enough, the experience will change you.
If you want honest feedback, take his class.
Wendyroth should not be teaching. He grades unfairly hard and lectures from books that are not assigned for class. This was a horrible writing experience and it's my world. I always think about him when I go to Wendy's though. Dude got famous writing drabble there.
SO ARROGANT! he is smart and knows alot about poetry, and He is not too hard of a grader, but if you suck up to him and act interested in his achievenments and poetry your grades will go up. It was frustrating because he changed the syllabus many times and only grades the entire class out of 100 pts. It made every point count alot so get them al
I couldn't stand this professor!!! Not only did he come to class high on his first day, but he came unprepared with no syllabi! He read the class part of the poem we were to be reading for the rest of the quarter! It was a COMPLETE waste of time! I am not one to complain about class difficulty, but the man has unrealistic expectations of his class.
Very cool guy. Very kind and personable. Incredibly smart. Fair. Covers relevant, deep, life material. Doesn't care about MLA. Go to office hours. We covered Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself". Not a lot of reading, but very close reading. No midterm, one paper, attend, take notes, ask questions. So glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews!
The comment below this one was clearly written by one of those wierd artsy people, and unless your one of those do not take this class.
an absolutely wonderful professor.
Pointless class with a professor who changed the syllabus at least once each week and seemed to come to class to blab some nonsense about a crappy book. Not worth it.
Joe is a good professor, his lectures are interesting and meaningful. I understand what people mean when they say he doesn't teach writing, because he doesn't. It's kind of up to you, it's a challenge. He gives interesting lectures and all the information necessary to write though. The people who are complaining probably just bs'ed their responses.
His first three classes were extremely liberal and it was quite funny to watch more than half the class drop. But other than that i really respect this professor. He's got balls, coming to school in a football jersey. I can see how some dont like him but i love his class. Good books, engaging insight. Not always open to differing opinions tho.
I love this guy! He is quite cynical and liberal but speaks nothing but truth. I wonder if he is happy. He creates stimulating discussion about the books and social problems of america. He is a fairly easy grader also. This class really opened my mind and provided with me with a new way of thinking.
Honestly, Joe is a great Professor. For the last two years, he served as my professor, mentor, and thesis chair. He's been a huge influence on me as a writer, an intellectual, and a person. He respects his students, but challenges them to be better. Unlike other creative writing professors at UCD, Joe is humble and anyone would benefit from him.
Joe curated materials for a study of berryman's dream songs in a way that expanded my historical basis for reading american long poems, and sharpened my ear for meter. joe re-created the cultural context of the dream songs' composition with music, criticism, and video from the period, which kept me engaged with a notoriously difficult text.
Joe Wenderoth was my professor when I was a graduate student in the Creative Writing program. He is easily the best teacher I have ever had. Besides giving spot-on feedback and insightful lectures, he always showed up at student readings. That is dedication for you. To put it simply: Joe Wenderoth cares about good poetry. Take all of his classes.
Joe is brilliant. He insists, ultimately, that you pursue work that YOU care about, and the honesty of this pursuit is what he seeks to facilitate. He is immensely learned, but doesn't showboat; he is incredibly generous with his time, and attentive in reading student work. His classes were serious, hilarious, and inspiring--FULL PROPS.
I studied with Joe when I was earning my MA in Creative Writing at UCD. I also TA'd two of his undergraduate courses. I got my BA in English at Yale and am earning my PhD in Ren Lit at UCLA. Joe remains the best teacher with whom I've ever studied poetry; no lit prof I've ever encountered is better. He also happens to be a genius poet.
LecturesConversations that get you to think about language in a different way. Joe makes the world of poemswordsliterature not only more accessible, but also more relevant and more apparent. You will see your everyday life differently, and this is why you get a higher education. Joe is incredibly dedicated and the best professor at UC Davis.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Joe was my professor when I was a graduate student in the Creative Writing Program, and though I graduated 6 years ago, he continues to read my poetry and support me professionally. I'm now a year away from finishing my Ph.D. and publishing my second book and he's been with me every step of the way. Respect.
I took 3 100 leveladvanced writing classes with JW (poetry, fiction, & non fiction). What other classes tried to teach me by method, I learned here by experience- the kind of reading and thinking that makes one reach way beyond the obvious. JW is a thoughtful prof who recognizes and values intuition, and can allow for the roughness of intellect.
Wenderoth is a great professor. Creative out-of-the-box and insightful. he told us to work hard, be honest, follow our interests. mixes music, pop culture, politics. gives a lot of attention to your weekly responses. Sometimes his comments were longer than my reports. not "easy" or "hard." what you put into it. wish more professors were as original
The first class I took at Davis that actually woke me up. Really unique perspective on poetry, very thoughtful and considerate of students, invited us to have the kind of discussions I still remember, months after the class ended.
Though I knew nothing about contemporary poetry, Joe respected my thoughts in his seminar and gave me encouraging feedback. He lent me an anthology and gave me copies of poems I still think about today. As for the poor reviews Joe receives on this site - please take a second to examine how vaguely and poorly they are written before you trust them.
His lectures ramble excessively, and his voice is droning. Expect spontaneous poetry recitations (of his own work, unrelated to coursework). If you can get into his style, I'm sure you can get a lot out of his class.
How do I describe Professor Wenderoth? Simple: the most strange guy I have ever taken a class from. If you put 100% into his class and are prepared for him to icily stare you into the dust if you try to make up what you didn't read, and will accept harsh, but well meaning criticism with a good spirit, you will get a good grade. He CARES about us!
He spent the entire first week of summer session talking about 911. He spent the entire first week of a writing course talking about how 911 was a plot by the U.S. government and he gave us assigned reading about it. He was irate talking about it and became openly hostile to us when we asked about how it related to creative writing. DON'T TAKE!!
Well, he's really lenient on grading. His lectures are disjointed and workshop is a general mess, though.
Well I mean if you love learning about 9/11 conspiracy theories this is the class for you. If you signed up for this class because you want to learn how to write fiction, you're out of luck.
Attend class and bookmark important passages for the final. The written assignments are manageable if you take a fair shot and heed his feedback for the long essay. His opinions on history and government should be taken with a grain of salt. As long as you are not offended by the occasional blanket statement, his lectures are enjoyable.
joe is, hands down, the best professor I was lucky enough to encounter at UCD. I took my 1st class w him freshman year, and proceeded to take every class he offered after that. joe's brilliant, and is invested in his students. if you're feeling that you don't understand the content, or feel he is 'arrogant', talk to the guy. he might change ya.
Joe isn't a clear grader. I went to his office hours to ask for help and feedback, but your grade is based on how well you can apply Grossman quotes. The tests consist of short answers that are graded based on his personal opinion of the world. You have to watch short films on 9/11 and hope for the best. Definitely not what I expected :(
Joe is a smart guy-but is super unclear on assignments and the TAs are in the dark on what to do grading wise. Everyone is all over the place, meaning the students suffer. Ive never had curves on tests in ENL classes (that just shows how terribly we all did on his weird tests). Also he rambles and mumbles ;(
The class average for our midterm was literally 55%? For an english class?? Absolutely ridiculous. Learned absolutely nothing with this professor. Waste of my time and energy, in all honesty. Felt horrible for the TAs, who had no idea what he was doing in the class. Highly suggest second-guessing taking a class with this professor.
Definitely a unique character, but he is genuinely a genius. Knows how to think, write, and make you think and write. Always enjoyed class and had fun (though sometimes it was uncomfortable). Quite disorganized, and cares more about the quality of your thoughts than their polish or deadlines. If you like structure, he may not be for you.
Definitely don't recommend for 100F. He doesn't give prompts or guidelines, but based on workshop feedback, he clearly expects students to write in a specific style, which doesn't rub me the right way given that this is a creative writing class. And any feedback that seems like it could be useful is vague - lots of metaphors, no straight up advice.
Actually took him for ENL100NF. His feedback was always really helpful, and you get plenty of time to do said assignments. Sometimes, class goes on a little too long and boring.
Terrible at responding to students, had a family emergency involving the sudden death of a family member that I had to leave for a week. Only got back to me a week and a half later saying I need to drop the class, when asking for ways to make up he was extremely sarcastic and rude despite the reasoning. Extremely unprofessional.
I don't hate most people but I definitely hated him. He was a horrible professor, grader, and legitimately one of the worst people I've ever come in contact with at the university. He rarely gave useful feedback and would cancel class at the last minute. He also berated students who didn't write to his standards without giving us the standards.
