Great Professor. Transferred from Arizona State University and is a GREAT addition to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke faculty. Joe is the most responsive professor I have ever had.
Dr. West took over this class from another professor in the middle of the semester. He did a wonderful job with the class. Dr. West is VERY responsive to questions and is available at almost any time to help students... He even gives out his cell phone number and encourages students to text him for urgent questions. Outstanding Professor!
I'd recommend any and everyone who needs Theory and Methods to take Dr. West it's a hard class however he will be more than happy to assist you
One of the best professors I've ever had.
I can't say enough great things about Dr. West - He is a professor that truly is approachable, engaging, and passionate about what he does. Coursework is demanding, yet doable. Dr. West goes above and beyond to help students succeed, provides exceptional feedback, and is easily the best professor in the UNCP MPA department. Take a class with him!
Dr. West is the hardest instructor I've had since enrollment at UNCP. What I love about him is that he critiques hard and that how I learn. If no one is pointing out what I'm doing wrong I left with no choice but to think I'm doing in correctly.
I had the pleasure to attend a graduate advanced regression course taught by Dr. West at ASU. He is an outstanding Professor, a credit to his field. I do no think I would have the level of understanding of statistics without his help; the knowledge gained from him has aided in nearly all facets of my career. Thank you Dr. West!
Quantitative Analysis is not an easy course. Dr. West went above and beyond for his online students. By having his classroom sessions recorded and posted online, he made this tough subject easier to understand.
Dr. West is a fantastic professor. He teaches a tough subject that would be an absolute nightmare if any other professor in UNC Pembroke's MPA department taught. He is friendly, answers all questions, and is always available to students. UNC Pembroke is lucky to have him and I'm personally thankful to have had the chance to learn from him.
Overall, this is a great professor that holds you accountable for producing graduate level material. He makes himself available for assistance in ways most professors wouldn't and strives to respond in a timely manner to all questions.
Dr. West is not only a clear and informative professor, he is very helpful with anything that students can't clarify on their own. His lectures are great, informative, and interesting. Well respected through the MPA Program. Has amazing background. Friendly and Very Approachable Professor. Great and Amazing Class!
Dr. West is knowledgeable and thorough. However, this class has been the most challenging of my graduate career. Online students are at a clear disadvantage and Dr. West understood that and made concessions. Unfortunately, as an online student, I feel the pace was too fast given the material and I feel more frustrated now than at the beginning.
Dr. West is the consummate educational professional. He provides clear expectations, pertinent and timely feedback and does everything in his power to give the students the opportunity to succeed.
Dr. West was a tough professor but he helps in his class in anyway he can and also breaks down the subject matter so that you can better understand it.
Dr. West is by far the best professor I have ever had. I wish I had more like him. I'm certain I would have learned more. He isn't easy, but he is a pleasure to be in class with and very very helpful and always available.
Class was difficult but professor is very helpful. The assignments are very clear and it was interesting to learn the Stata program. Professor encourages student to student interaction and helping each other, which was a very big part of my success in the class.
Dr. West is a wonderful professor. He can take a difficult and complex class and make it understandable. He is an advocate for his students going above and beyond to help. He will give you great feedback to help you improve and all the tools you need to succeed. If you follow his directions and keep up, you'll do well.
Great professor
Tough class, but the professor does an excellent job of being available and answering questions.
Dr. West is a great professor. What I like most about him is he understands that most graduate students in the MPA program are there to receive a professional degree. He tailors his class around this by being available, encouraging questions and most importantly not slapping us in the face with his big degrees by talking down to us.
Designs this graduate course more like you would see at a larger University that is more demanding on your time. Tough grader but gives good feedback letting you know exactly what he is looking for.
Dr. West is there for students. Being in an online setting, not having the face-to-face interaction can be a challenge at times, and Dr. West has always made it a point to say how he can be contacted should questions arise. Very thankful for his guidance during this course, as I wouldn't have passed without it.
Dr. West is a great professor. He is very engaged with his student's and is always available to explain concepts that are not clear. Dr. West is a tough grader, but he provides useful feedback on how to improve your assignments in hopes for a better grade. Dr. West expects a lot from his students, but he prepares you to do the work as expected.
Dr. West is a passionate professor who cares about the success of his students. The material in PAD 5080 was challenging but he was patient and very thorough in covering the material.
Taught a very difficult subject ONLINE but was very approachable and ready to help. I would absolutely recommend his class and take another under his guidance. He did an excellent job with the class.
Dr. West is a fantastic instructor and is willing to go the extra mile in an effort to help students. He gives good feedback on assignments and good sense of humor during lectures. I look forward to other classes with him.
Great teacher!
Very challenging
I had Dr. West for Theory and Methods Undergrad. He is a good professor. When I had him, he was teaching the class for the first time, so we were working out the kinks as the semester went on. He is a great guy, and always willing to help.
Dr. West expects a lot from his students, but gives more in return. I don't think I would have gotten a decent grade in this class with any other professor. His clear communication, detailed syllabus, videos, and positivity really saved me this semester.
WEST IS AN OUTSTANDING PROFESSOR. THOUGH HIS CLASS IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, HE GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND TO MAKE SURE STUDENTS HAVE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL BEING TAUGHT. MAKING HIMSELF READILY AVAILABLE OUTSIDE OF CLASS FOR HELP, SHOWS THAT HE HAS A PASSION FOR HIS JOB. I WOULD RECOMMEND HIS CLASSES TO THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN & APPLY.
Great professor. A lot of work, but will learn. A grade of an "A" will be earned.
Dr. West is an amazing professor who wants you to succeed in his class. The class is very difficult, but he provides clear instruction and constructive feedback. He is very flexible and willing to adjust the course to fit the needs of the class.
Dr. West's format for the online class was great! There were discussion boards, but not every week or that required you to respond to a minimum number of classmates. The course took on a life of its own just as it would in the classroom. With the flexibility to use your own topic of interest, learning and understanding the info was easier.
Dr. West is one of the most responsive online teachers! His lectures are brief and to the point, he actually screen shares while demonstrating the software functions. His late policy is strict but you learn to live with it. Dr. West makes himself available throughout the entire semester for assistance and offers great feedback for assignments.
I respect the fact that Dr. West was able to provide constructive criticism and great feedback regarding a research assignment. This has strengthened the way I structure research paper for future courses.
Dr. West helps you to understand problems by breaking them into parts and constructing them again so as to better understand the whole.
I appreciate Dr. West's sincere effort to challenge his students. It is clear he does not want someone to feel inflated if the work they are producing is not worthy. Because of this, his students should feel they have accomplished much more than they might have had he not pushed them.
Dr. West is certainly challenging, but never makes students feel like they are alone. I'm certainly a better professional and student because of his feedback.
There was a great deal of information learned in Dr. West's Quantitative Analysis I course. He explained all the topics and concepts very well. Additionally, he made himself very accessible to the students. He went above and beyond by giving his personal cell phone number so that student questions could be answered when students were not in class!
I took Dr. West for theories and methods, and I wish I could take him again for another class! He is a great professor, and the best in the department and I wish he could teach more undergrad classes. His lectures are never boring, and changes it up to make it interesting (in a good way!). Also don't be fooled by the harsh syllabus, its a joke :)
I had Dr. west for theories and methods, before starting the class i received the syllabus of the class which scared the life out of me. like many other students i waited until my senior year to take the class. This class challenged my work ethic as well as my time management skills This class was amazing, Dr. West was a great help, very hands on
Before the class began I was nervous because I am not too well with computers, but realized that I was just over thinking. There is a fair amount of reading in the course, but it is nothing too extreme. The class is interesting and the stata assignments are not too bad. Be prepared to learn and participate. Dr. West is helpful so do not worry.
Dr. West is an awesome professor, by far the best class I've had at UNCP for undergrad! I was really worried when I first started that it would be the hardest class I have ever taken especially since it was a 4 credit hour class. Dr. West is very helpful, and I thoroughly enjoyed going to his class. Reading is essential to doing well in his class!
Dr. West is an amazing professor. He is passionate about what he does and that enthusiasm will spark your interest in this class. I was very intimidated at first and really overwhelmed, but he gives clear instructions and follows the syllabus. I would also recommend taking advantage of lab time, it is essential to passing.
Dr. West is a great instructor and is willing to help any student who is struggling. His class is very hard, but if he sees you are trying hard he will not let you struggle.
Dr. West is a gifted instructor. Though the content of the class is amongst the hardest I've encountered in college, he is very helpful, very intuitive and if you commit yourself to the course there is no way you will not pass. You might even get an A (generous with the extra credit).
Professor West is a wonderful professor! Truly cares about the experience of the student, and strives to make an impact that far outlasts the span of the course. Reading and assignments are essential. But none of the material is boring or difficult to become engaged in. The discussions are interactive (no death by power point). And EXTRA CREDIT...
Dr. West knows his stuff and expects you to put in the work to get it done. He is excellent at feedback and wants to see his students succeed.
During the first week of class I had technical problems with the Stata software. Dr. West took the time to help me get my problems solved. Dr. West is very clear about his expectations and great at providing helpful feedback to students. This is the most difficult class I have ever taken and I learned a lot!
Mr. Joe West is a tough grader; however, he will give you the things you need to do well on your work. I have a lot on my plate and it was starting to show in my work. I was really appalled at how low he graded one of my assignments, but he did a private consultation and gave me great advice and pointers on where to take my work.
Dr. West is very clear in what he expects and does not tolerate deviation from that. He might come across as tough and strict, but that is needed in a course that is this difficult in nature. He persona online seems standoffish, but once you watch his class videos you will see that he really does care and wants to help.
Expect to have a quiz almost every class period.
Dr. West cool af... make sure you read before each class there will be a quiz most days. also take advantage of all the extra credit.
I really had no problems with Dr. West. If you need him he is there to help you. The class is tough but you have to really put your effort in.
Dr. West is a quality professor. He has high standards, but they are clear from the beginning. He provides the resources and help for you to make an A. You have to work for it, no easy A's here.
Dr. West is very specific in what he wants from his students. He expects everyone to give a good effort and is willing to do everything he can to assist those who are struggling with his course.
You get back what you put it! Course material is difficult and requires serious dedication. However, Dr. West is clear that he is willing to help if you ask for it. . Constructive and inspirational. Overall a wonderful professor who sets high expectations for his students. Not for sissies!
Perhaps one of the most intelligent professors I have come into contact with. His class is very hard, make sure you take it with a course that will be complimentary in regards to workload. Put effort into your research project ahead of time to allow opportunity to seek his feedback prior to the due date. Read all text, watch all the videos.
A lot of work but not hard. Gives chances for extra credit
Overall, the professor helps students as much as possible. The course itself is difficult to understand, however, the professor provides video lectures that are helpful, as well as allowing for students to ask questions on discussion boards. Only downfall is the papers assigned are long, which is difficult when working full time & going to school
This has been the most challenging course I have ever taken in my career but I have learned so much. I have a clear feeling of accomplishment now that I completed the semester. I am pleased to know that a course of this magnitude is included in this program
He is a great teacher who is willing to help you out as long as you are active in class. Attendance isn't mandatory, however he does give small quizzes throughout the week and those points are helpful. Overall, I enjoyed the class. He is one of the most intelligent professors on campus.
Although the material in the class was difficult at times, Dr. West definitely goes out of his way to help any student that is willing to put in the work. He does a lot more for his students than a lot of the professors on campus.
This might be the toughest course you will take in MPA. But Dr. West has patience and knowledge to make it easier. This course involves stata and it felt like we had to learn the commands and play around with it ourselves. It's only hard if you don't keep up with what he asks you to do. It majorly helps if you form a study group to do stata assign.
Course is very tough but doable if you put in the work.
He is a nice guy, teach what is useful for future. :)
Very nice guyteach something useful.
Dr. West is an awesome professor but this course requires a lot of work. You are going to work hard in this class so be prepared!
Dr. West is very knowledgeable and was very patient with students. He understands that the subject area was unfamiliar for most of us but he did not make us feel as if we were ignorant. He was always willing to answer questions and help. He definitely makes you earn your grade.
Dr. West is an amazing Professor. He works with students more than any Professor than I have ever taken. He gives out his cell phone number and encourages phone calls after 5pm and even on weekends. His syllabus makes it seem like he is hard nosed, but he really cares. If you take his class, be prepared to work. You will be amazed at what you learn
Dr. West is by far the most intelligent, down to earth, and helpful professors in academia. His class is difficult and his expectations are high. However, he provides every opportunity possible to learn the material well. He is available by text, phone, or email 7 days a week. Dr. West will never give you a fish, but can make you an angler!
You are expected to use the discussion board. Plan ahead for projects. Ask classmates for any confusion as he will take 10 points off your grade if the questions are in the syllabus.
Dr. West is the best professor I've ever encountered. He cares about each of his students and strives to better prepare them for the future. He teaches a difficult subject well and has developed multiple avenues for understanding. I hate the semester is ending; I would love to continue to learn from him. Interesting Lectures, Outstanding Man.
Dr. West is very clear cut when it comes to expectations within his course. The course work is challenging, but he makes himself available whenever we need clarification. I went from not being interested in this type of course, to actually enjoying manipulating data, and questioning data on my own time.
A lot of reading and many assignments. Not a class that you can procrastinate with. Very helpful to watch the online class. Was great about answering questions and genuinely seemed to care that students learned and understood the material. I had to use online videos and another textbook to learn some of the material. Would take his class again.
Great professor, I would take any class of his. He works with you, he pushed me to want to make an A in his class. At first I didn't know what to expect from him, but after a week or two, I begin to really love this course!
Dr. West's class is challenging & he tells you that upfront. Reading all of the assigned text & watching all the available videos are essential to grasping the intense material he throws at you in this course. For the most part he will help & guide when you ask for assistance, but he has rules as to what & how you can ask. Difficult, but possible.
In this class you quickly jump into the material and if you are not familiar with the subject, be prepared to do a lot of reading. However, Dr. West does have very good stata videos available that if you put in the time to study them, you will gain a much better understanding of how to complete the assignments.
Overall great experience with Dr. West!
Dr. West's PAD5080 class is difficult. If you're not willing to take the time out of your schedule to sit down and do the assigned readings and assignments you might as well drop the course before it starts. Dr. West is very helpful and available to provide guidance on homework and projects, if needed. Class is not for the faint of heart.
The course material is difficult, but Dr. West is fair. You will get the grade you work for in this class.
Dr. West is a wonderful professor. Although the subject matter is difficult, especially for someone like me that it has been so long since graduating undergraduate school, Dr. West really did all he could to give every student the ability to succeed. He has high expectations for his students, as he should for graduate level students.
This is a tough class but Dr. West is a very effective and caring teacher.
Student's, you are not going to walk into this class & get handed an A. As Rupaul says "You better Work". As an online student Videos will become your best friend, yes he expects you to read the books, & a group mate wouldn't hurt.. He states in the beginning it is a commitment. It is a love/hate relationship but a class I am glad I have learned.
The only issue I have with this class is the delay in response to assignments such as our Narrated Powerpoint Presentations. Besides that, it's good!
This is a course that fosters creativity. As such, Dr. West does not give much instruction on assignments, he expects you to think and be creative in your work. Overall an interesting class, be prepared to participate, work in groups, read, and have several writing assignments. Also, there is a final social media project for the course.
It is an interesting class, that includes a big project to be completed at the end of the semester.
I have taken classes with Dr. West in the past and have enjoyed his teaching style. Unfortunately this is by far my least favorite class. I have not felt that there is clear guidance, support, or enough feedback. Given that this is an on-line class, I need more than for the professor than to just post assignments. I am missing actual "instruction".
I hate to say it ,but I have not enjoyed this class at all. It involved a lot of "busy work", with little guidance from the professor. A lecture or presentation would be helpful
Dr. West has been extremely helpful in providing support and guidance for his students. He makes a very difficult class comprehendable and enjoyable. I am shocked at how well I have learned this subject as it's something I would usually dread and relate to learning a new language.
Dr. West made this semester one of the best I have ever had. In addition to taking the time to respond all of my MANY emails in this class, he explained the material in a way that I could understand it. Internet classes are usually more difficult for me, but because Dr. West was so willing to help, I made it through this class with a B.
Dr. West is a great professor. Beware, he is not easy but if you are willing to put in the effort he will definitely be willing to help you out. Also, be prepared to read for this class, and watch his lectures you will definitely be lost if you attempt to navigate the assignments on your own.
You definitely want to read the material that is assigned in the syllabus and don't fall behind. Participation is the key. Grading is fair as long as you participate, ask questions if in doubt, and follow directions. Not an easy class but will challenge you which is why we are in graduate school.
Originally, I was afraid this course was going to be overwhelming for me as I had not taken a statistics class in about 5 years. However, Dr. West clearly explained difficult topics and very briefly discussed topics he felt were not as important. Additionally, Dr. West is willing to help in any way possible, like staying after class for questions.
Well, all of the above tags really represent the jest of the class. I feel like Dr. West was an amazing professor that really cares for his students outcomes (probably in life as well). Really good guy. Great reflection for this university and community.
Do not mistaken his kindness for weakness. His course is very structured and you must be a very disciplined online student to succeed; but that being said, if he knows you are doing your best he will do all he can to assist you in achieving good results. Dr. West WANTS you to learn.
Tough but worth it. And always there if you need him.
Dr. West is awesome. Class is one of the most demanding in the MPA program as far as work load but you will learn. Dr. West will give you everything you need to succeed & is willing to help you if you put in the work. He breaks down material so its easy to understand & grasp. DO NOT FALL BEHIND, be prepared to read & ask questions. Use the videos!
The material seems dense at first, but his lectures really clear things up. He does a great job in putting concepts into understandable perspective. Don't be intimidated by the syllabus, but it's pretty much word for word true. He's one of the best professors I've had when it comes to feedback and accessibility outside of class.
The syllabus was very scary at first, I dreaded this class. But I soon found out He was an awesome teacher and works with students whatever way possible.
He provides a lot of material to read before class, but he condenses it down to what is important. While he can be critical if an assignment is not done well, he does do his best to help students understand what they need to do for papers and how to use the material to its fullest.
Dr. West is always available to answer questions for his students. Overall great class. Some of the wording in the syllabus can be confusing.
Passionate about making sure you gain and education that carries over to real life.
Dr. West did a great job at helping me understand a difficult subject. He was willing to help me whenever I showed up at his office and he tells you exactly what he wants you to accomplish in order to succeed.
Watch the Stata videos that Dr. West has created as many times as needed to do will on the Stata assignments. Revisiting the videos was the key to me getting an A on all the Stata assignments. You're going to have a lot of reading in this class and it may not make sense until he explains it in class but do your reading. He will test you on it.
Dr. West is a great professor. Make no mistake, YOU WILL LEARN some things in this course! However, one thing I did not like was the question policy. At times more clarification would have helped. I do not really have anything "bad" to say about Dr. West, I would just encourage future students to ask as many questions as you can within the policy.
Dr. West is the best professor I've had so far at UNCP. This material is not easy and the readings are unclear but he does a great job in class connecting the dots. He is quick to answer questions and wants you to succeed. He makes online learning a great experience by allowing you to watch live and posting various videos to help with assignments
Re-watch lectures as many times as you need to. This helped me a lot. Dr. West makes himself available for questions outside of class. Don't fall behind. Ask questions, ask on the with the syllabus, reading ahead & youtube may help with confusion on certain topics. Communication and participation is Key. Work hard, this class required a lot of time
Dr. West was a great professor and in his class PAD5080 I felt like I learned a lot from the paper to the stata assignments. However, his participation grade for class is based off of quizzes you get from the readings. The readings are rather difficult to grasp with explanation of the topics first. However he quizzes you before he explains topics.
Dr. West is a very supportive professor. He is always willing to help if there are any concepts you may not fully grasp. It is very important to take detailed notes during class, when reading materials, and on all other videos posted. Also, pay close attention to all of his verbal/written comments about what to include in the assignments.
He is a good professor, has no problem answering questions. Gives lots of chances for extra credit, which is great because he gives a quiz each class. Lots of reading and note-taking. Grades work quickly. In his class he actually wants you to learn and grow.
You'll have to work for your grade in this class; reading isn't optional, and Dr. West gives a quiz every single class period. That being said, if you're diligent then you won't have trouble understanding things, and there are enough extra credit opportunities that - even if you're bad at stats - it should be easy enough to get the grade you want.
Dr. West is an excellent professor. He takes the time to explain difficult concepts, and really makes sure that all of his students understand the material.
Dr. West is such a good professor. He makes the PLS 2330 class look interesting, however the class itself is very difficult. Dr. West is very nice and he helps his students as possibly as he can. Make sure to read all the material he has provided in the syllabus because he does a lot of quizzes.
Great guy, if you go by the syllabus youll think hes a jerk but couldnt be further from the truth. One of my favorite teachers Ive had
Dr West is a great professor who cares about making sure his students take something away from the course but if math and computer technology is not your strong suit youre going to have to work 10x as hard. I would not advise taking this class if you dont actually need it. Read everyday and take notes because you can use your notes on the exams.
Dr West is an awesome professor. He makes himself very accessible to students. While the content is tough and hard to grasp at first he is not afraid to go the extra mile to help a student. He breaks down hard concepts in ways that make it easier to grasp. I highly enjoyed his class and it truly opened my eyes about the importance of data.
I was beyond scared to take this class after reading the syllabus. After a weeks, you get the hang of the readings and taking notes for quizzes. Participation is key, you learn concepts better. Attendance isn't mandatory, but quizzes every class are a key component of your grade, they also come in handy later down in the semester. Very good class.
Dr. West is a great professor, gives a lot of extra credit and wants you to pass but also wants you to come out of the class and understand everything. I don't like reading as much as he asks for but it benefits you down the road. Always available for extra help for this class and others. Gives great feedback without belittling anyone.
Hard class, but great professor. Always willing to give extra credit. Don't let his syllabus freak you out.
Attendance is not required but he gives quizzes every class on the reading and those points go towards your final grade. They arent hard even if you just skim the reading. TAKE GOOD NOTES on the reading and lectures he lets you use all handwritten notes on both exams. Great professor its just the course itself is demanding. He gives lots of EC
If you take good notes and come to class there is no way you could fail. Textbook is mandatory. Attendance is not but you will miss out on crucial quiz points and notes. Good teacher who answers questions in a clear and easily understood way. Gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit.
Good Professor would take again. Very hard classes but you will learn a lot. Be prepared to make a fool of yourself if you haven't read materials.
It was a good class, make sure you do the reading every night as he checks attendance with a quiz every class period which is the opportunity for easy points if you read
Overall, Dr. West is a great professor. However, Dr. West issues out quizzes every class session and those tend to get annoying if you have to miss class.
I took his online graduate PAD5080 course, the workload is demanding but doable. They say that this is one of the hardest and most demanding core course in the MPA program and I can see why. Watch the previous class videos (label videos with topic, hard to revise) if there isn't a live stream available. Communication with instructor is ok at best.
Dr. West works with you if you do your part as a student and are concerned about your grades. Blackboard is the best way to get in contact with Dr. West to schedule a phone conference or meeting.
Dr. West truly knows his stuff. He solicits feedback from all students which is important. I wish I communicated more during the online course. All the information is there. Review the online videos and match them up to the syllabus ahead of time. It will make the experience flow better. Take this course by itself if you are a first year graduate.
Professor West is an excellent professor. This class requires real effort because the material is difficult but completely doable. Take this course in class if possible.
Dr. West is a brilliant professor in class. Do expect this 1 class to feel like a part-time job. I took this class solely and found myself spending 20-25 hrs a week staying on top of my work. However, Dr. West is very encouraging in his classes and explains the material so very well! Just keep up with the assignments!
Tough class.
This course was interesting but I felt like there was not a lot of advice given on assignment and it was very easy to misunderstand what is expected. I would recommend taking this class by itself and not taking a full load of classes.
Dr. West is very knowledgeable about quantitative analysis. I took this course online and viewed recorded lectures from the previous semesters. Dr. West is passionate about teaching and he provides feedback within a timely manner. Dr. West also provides students with resources to utilize when needed. I enjoyed this course and learned a lot!
Great professor that encourages individuals to challenge themselves.
Dr. West was my favorite professor in the MPA program. He is fair in his grading and very passionate about what he teaches. I highly recommend MPA students take his political communication class, it really should be a requirement for all Public Management students. VERY insightful.
I think Dr West is ok, however I think the class is too advance. If you dont have a basic statistic or computer programming back ground, your in trouble. The class is definitely difficult online, I only took it online because it was my only option; however he was nice enough to allow me a time to call him with concerns.
Excellent teacher & fantastic learning experience for serious scholars. Econometric BOOT CAMP! Make it count. Commit 15 hours a week. Watch the class & Stata videos. Set preconceptions aside & TRUST JOE WEST to teach you. Stata textbook is not a must. All other reading & videos are a MUST. Fall behind - withdrawal. Researchers will love it!
Outstanding time during this course. Though the course is tough, Dr. West ensured we had all the materials to be successful. Additionally, he provides clear criteria for all class work and is available for questions if you dont understand a specific topic.
I was very nervous about taking this class but Dr. West is a great professor. He always walks into class with a smile. He is prepared to answer your questions but just know what you're talking about. Take my advice and do the participation quizzes. Not doing them will hurt you grade. He makes Theory and Methods interesting.
I was warned this would be the toughest class in the MPA program, and it is difficult BUT Dr. West gives you the tools to succeed if you work hard. He has multiple recordings online for you to review of his previous classes, which helped me tremendously. The syllabus seems demanding when you first review it, but don't be afraid, totally do-able!
The good-The stata assignments are actually fun and interesting. Dr. West is available for when you need help, you will need help. The bad- his YouTube videos are outdated and need to be updated. In fact, he needs update all of his material. Quizzes are not your friend, they can be on any material and are mostly formulas. Be prepared to work!
The ability to participate via Webex in live sessions enhanced my ability to understand the content of the course. Dr. West is a tough grader, the topic is tedious, but if you comply with the outlined expectations and ask questions after reviewing what has been given, then the course only moderately increases the anxiety levels.
Professor Wests class, PAD 5080, was not the hardest class I have ever taken but it is high on the list. There was a significant amount of homework and a few hard quizzes. I did not do well on the quizzes but scored high on my other assignments. I knew this class would be hard so I didn't take two classes since I work full time.
Dr. West teaches statistical material that isn't used by most. Therefore, the workload is heavy and more work is needed. The projects are labor intensive but build upon themselves as the semester progresses so that the end work is manageable. He is very communicative and willing to answer questions at any time. His use of Webex teams is a strength.
He felt very busy and unavailable this semester Does not allow late work at all Uses different mediums of tech in the class There are timed quizzes with no feedback Be careful with questions. Even then, they dont always get answered. Any responses are short and cold Offered extra credit Most of the class seems to like him
Very engaging professor, although he tends to teach reflective of his STEM background; it's a little tougher for those lacking math skills. However, he does appreciate quality writing skills. Quizzes were math-based. Read the texts, attend the lectures. WebEx was great; YouTube was not. Ask questions! One of the more difficult courses I've had.
This was a tough class, particularly for not being a "math person." However, with that being said, Dr. West clearly outlines his expectations, and is available for questions as needed. You must apply yourself and what you have learned in order to be successful. The class does build on itself, so if you don't stay engaged, you will have problems.
Follows closely to the syllabus, make sure to watch the class videos they are key to understanding the material.
Dr. West is a great professor. He is extremely honest. I took his class online, but he used Webex which allowed us to participate with resident class. He created a wonderful team learning atmosphere, for all students. The course is extremely hard, but Dr. west breaks it down to simple terms. He is caring and goes the extra mile for his students.
Dr. West is great professor. This class requires a lot reading and a great understanding of math. The online class is made easier with the WebX video of the classes and interaction with classmates is also easier through using WebX.
This was a difficult course; however, he made himself avaialbe, used Web Ex teams which was wonderful! I could watch the live classes, which really helped me. There were a lot of books but I used each and every one of them and it really helped me to understand the course material. I love Stata! Buy a calculator for this class there is lots of math.
He's amazing take his class!
Great professor. I would take his class again. Gives good feedback and lots of extra credit. Does his best to help you.
He gives a bit of work, but it isn't an overload and you get a lot out of it.
Great professor. Understands how hard certain assignments are and offers much help. Stata is very tricky. Really work closely with Dr. west to get a good grade on it
Great professor. Gives good feedback and lots of extra credit. Does his best to help you.
great professor love him
Great professor; down to earth and helps you think about the outside world more critically
Dr. West is an amazing teacher. His teaching styles are very broken down and easy to understand. He is very helpful if you don't understand something or need additional assistance. Although looking at the syllabus, it may seem like a lot of work but in reality, it is not. The material that he presents, is in fact useful for future references.
he is a very good professor
Dr. West is GREAT!! Be prepared to read in his class, he does not give hard readings however they are long. Come to class and take notes on the readings as well as in class. You will be able to use them on the quizzes, midterm, and final!!!
Great professor, by far the hardest class Ive taken in college by far. However, Mr West is a excellent professor who tries his hardest to make sure you understand it. I would highlight that he is tough at times but its because he truly wants to prepare you for life after college. Great professor, I appreciate your class and you as a professor.
Very understanding. I thought this class was going to be hard but it was actually not the bad. He's very nice, he may seem intimidating but he is very nice
Dr. West can seem intimidating at first, but once you get to know him he is a great professor. He gives many opportunities for extra credit. The class is hard and you have to understand it for the exams.
Theres not much really to add here. Looking for someone to hold your hand and snuggle you while you attempt to slug through college? Dr. West isnt your man. Looking to grow academically and possibly as a person while having to dig deep and meet high standards and expectations? Hes your man. Probably one of the best professors Ive ever had.
If you are looking for an easy class, definitely not the one! Dr. West cares for the students, but you better have thick skin and ready to take some pretty harsh feedback in your assignments. He's very direct and to the point when he talks to students. Willing to help you anyway he can when it comes to questions, just do not email him directly.
Not an easy class at all. However, it is very informative. He is a tough grader but gives great constructive feedback. He is willing to help you... sometimes he may sound a bit condescending... but not all the time. The class is pretty lit tho.
Class seems overwhelming at first, but if you follow instructions closely and pay attention during lectures, then it's enjoyable. Dr. West, along with classmates, made Quantitative Analytics my most enjoyable course. I will not hesitate taking another Dr. West course.
Dr. West is very tough. I wish that I could have taken this course in person instead of online. Looking back, I would certainly do that instead. Heavy focus on youtube videos from past. Consider finding a tutor to teach the material. The webex team format is great, but learning the material essentially on your own, makes it the toughest class.
Very knowledgeable on the subject. His syllabus, videos and some quizzes had the wrong info but he has not taken time to fix them. However, he does want you to pass and learn. Needs to work on how he speaks to people.
Dr. West has been the most easily accessible professor that I have taken. Integrating the online students with the in class students using WebEx Teams is an innovative way of instructing, and kept me involved throughout the semester. Make sure to participate and do not be scared to ask any question!
This was a very difficult class and working full time and odd hours added to the difficulty. Dr. West is accessible more than your typical professor and gives constructive feedback. I have to admit that the material was difficult to grasp, but the open forum with classmates makes it easier to find assistance.
PAD5080 is a very tough class. Dr. West gives excellent feedback and is very accessible. He provides several opportunities for extra credit for the students that would like extra points. One of the better professors at UNCP.
Dr. West is one of the best instructors that I have had at UNCP. While this class was very challenging, he made himself available via Webex outside of class (and even at odd hours) to help!
Dr. West is firm and fair. He offers ample opportunity with extra credit. My one critique is regarding the syllabus - some items were inaccurate. However, Dr. West quickly resolved those issues.
Dr. West is one of the most reasonable instructors I have had. Use logic, do your best, and if you have questions regarding assignments, ask. The class may seem intimidating at first, but stick with it. I can tell Dr. West wants you to succeed.
Dr. West's class is difficult, because the course material is difficult. He is very resourceful and will gladly help any student. He expects for you to give 100 percent because he does as well. That said, do not expect to be spoon feed, you will have to do the work!
The pace of this course is fast and the content is more difficult than other classes I have taken in the MPA program. However, stick out the first few weeks, ask a lot of questions and you'll find that Dr. West truly wants his students to do well. The class will definitely push you outside of your comfort zone, but it's a good learning experience.
This class is like WHOA hard but Dr. West is an awesome educator. A class I could (nay, would) have failed with a professor that didn't care as much. He understands that the material isn't intuitive to everyone and teaches accordingly. He wants to see his students be successful and does everything he can to help facilitate that.
Weekly readings and assignments were bountiful and sometimes disconnected. While Dr. West is very knowledgeable, he seems to have little patience with anyone that doesn't quickly pick up on the subjects and is often degrading or condescending to his students. He's good with the extra credit but not always clear on regular grading policies.
Dr West is a tough professor. The class was reading intensive and there were quizzes almost every class (you can't miss class), but he was a great teacher and I learned a lot. He is not sensitive, but he is fair. I appreciated how prepared he always was for class. Just when you thought you couldn't take it anymore, he added a little humor.
Dr. West is an amazing professor and I would recommend him to anyone interested in political science. While you have to work hard in his class, his assignments aren't boring. He is also open to advice on how to make his class more enjoyable for students.
Dr. West is a great professor. If you do the reading, then everything falls into place. Te quizzes are all based of the reading and they account for participation. I would highly recommend taking his course.
Do not take Dr. West's class for granted. Do not skip, as it is important that you pay attention to how to use stata, turn in assignments on time, and do not slack behind. You will fail. He gives plenty of extra credit, but do not lean on that for support, it is important that you study and submit every assignment in the allotted time frame.
Professor West is a great teacher who cares a lot about of his job. This class is definitely a class you can do good in but you have to be on top of all work from the beginning of class to the end of the semester. You are going to HAVE to do the required readings before each class or your grade will reflect that. The in class atmosphere is boring.
Dr. West was a easy professor if you put 100% effort in the course and make sure you review the material. West gives out many opportunities for extra credit so even if you give half effort to the class, you should leave with a solid C. Write down everything he discusses in lecture because you can use those notes for the final and midterm.
He is a good/fair professor. This course load is very reading and note taking intensive.
An exellent professor that offers more than enough extra credit opportunities to accommodate for some assignments that are perceived to be difficult. Those that do not read will struggle to do well in the class, while taking notes on the reading is a must and will be the difference between passing on the miderm and final.
I took Dr. West's class because I had to take it for my specific major, but I thoroughly enjoyed it none the less. Now if you want to succeed in his classes you have to put in the effort, but honestly, if you're in college this should be your expectation for every class.
Dr. West is a strict professor who expects you to come to class prepared. If there is reading due you will be expected to have read it and either understand or have questions. In his classes, you get the grade you work for. Be honest with yourself.
Before letting you do assignments, he makes sure that you have and understand everything you need, he makes all the assignments fun, he gives LOTS of extra credit, lets you use ALL of your notes on tests, and makes sure you leave the class with a very good understanding of everything.
Dr. West is an excellent professor in teaching the subject that you are taking. He is heavy on his lectures, and students are responsible for reading the material before class and choosing the right notes from reading the content. I recommend taking any other class he teaches.
Dr. West is amazing very helpful. If you dont understand go to his office hours.
This is a class where you REALLY need to pay attention because the material can be difficult to understand however he is very patient and will guide you through it. Make sure you take really good notes because he does open note test and you will hate yourself if you don't take notes, trust me. Gives out extra credit like it's candy. PLEASE READ!!!
Really enjoyed the class and believes that there are plenty of opportunities to pass as long as you do the work and readings. He's very helpful and is willing to work with you, if you are really trying. This class is not an easy A and will be difficult to keep up with if too many classes are skipped.
Dr. Joe West is an exceptional instructor, and will do whatever is necessary to make sure students pass the course. My only complaint is that I feel he is inaccessible at times, but for the most part he is very hands on with students and very knowledgeable of the material. If I had a chance to take him again (of course in another class), I would
Dr. West is by far the best instructor I've had at UNCP. He challenges us to do our best. He is always prepared and expects the same from his students. He is extremely hand-on with assignments and gives lots of chances for extra credit. He is tough, but he is fair. He gives great feedback and you can tell he wants you to succeed. A+ teacher!
Dr. West is a very good teacher. His syllabus makes him sound a lot worse than he is. You have to read your books, and the assignments are difficult but as long as you come to class and do the work, you'll do well. Dr. West is very funny and honestly likes to make his class a good time. He also gives a lot of random extra credit in class!
Late work is NOT accepted. While the lab section is rather difficult, he is more than willing to work with anyone on an individual basis. Extra credit is abundant and it adds up. His lectures are engaging and exciting and really makes you think about statistics, the world, and how they interact. 10/10 would recommend. Just work hard.
Great professor helps a lot
Dr. West in an excellent professor. His class is not highly difficult. He allows you to use your notes on the reading quizzes and the midterm/final. He also provides handouts which you are also able to use on the midterm/final (he will tell you which ones you can and cannot use). Participation (reading) quizzes are given at the beginning of class
Makes you work for it, dont slack off!
He is very supportive.
Dr. West is an extraordinary teacher. Although his class is very tough, he cares about his students and he makes sure that everyone understands the material. At first glance, you may think he's full of himself because of his syllabus, but underneath, he's a VERY genuine instructor and WAIIIIIIITTTT, Did I mention, he's hilarious.
Dr. West is great. Don't let the syllabus scare you. The work is no cakewalk-it is commensurate to what a grad student/future policy maker should be capable of. Surviving online: Form a group, chat it up, lead & encourage one another. You will need support so ask ask ask. Your analytical and critical thinking will flouish after this class.
This was an extremely difficult class. I took it online but I wish I had been able to take it face-to-face. At many points, I felt extremely lost and confused. Sometimes it was difficult to understand exactly what Dr. West wanted and a lot of clarification was needed. However, Dr. West was very kind and helpful. Webex Teams was really nice.
This class is a very difficult class so be ready to work. The key is to attend all classes and communicate your questions with your classmates as well as Dr. West. Make sure you watch the previous year's youtube videos. DON'T SKIP THESE! They were very helpful. Dr. West is very helpful and will answer any questions you may have.
This class may be especially challenging for those who are not as comfortable with math and analytics. The class is humbling but not impossible. It is important to ask Dr. West and your classmates for help. Dr. West is encouraging and genuinely wants to see you succeed. Dr. West will go the extra mile to walk you through a challenging step.
This is for Quantitative Analysis II. This class takes the required Quan I and kicks it up a notch. Highly recommend this class if you enjoyed stata assignments. Dr. West is one of my favorite professors at UNCP for a reason, he expects you to learn and participate but truly cares about your growth as a student.
Dr. West makes you want to challenge yourself academically. The PAD5320 course was difficult and a required a lot of self direction and motivation. He teaching style gives great feedback, encourages growth, and makes you want to push yourself. He is also the most available professor I have had and always helpful.
The material looks intimidating, but Dr. West explains it phenomenally. His videos are extremely helpful. If you don't watch videos you will be lost. He academically challenges you and cares that you understand the concepts. Webex was very helpful for questions. I love his positive reinforcement and his strong interest in the subject matter.
Dr. West is an excellent professor for Public Administration courses at UNCP. Building on the previous quantitative analysis classes, this section allowed for freedom and flexibility with studying data and finding your own data set. Assignments were realistic and applied the analysis skill needed to understand the concepts well. Highly recommend!
I don't like statistics and made a C in Statistics. If you do the assignment and try you will do good in this class. Dr. West is hilarious and gives plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Make sure to read all assignments because he will call you out and ask questions. Make sure to take really good notes. Take the in person class.
Do not be scared off by the syllabus. Most people read the syllabus and drop the class immediately. To be clear, there are very disheartening things in there that adamantly discourage asking questions, however, it is more bark than bite. The class actually ended up being smooth, just do all reading and watch all lectures.
The course material is very difficult, and requires a lot of discipline and attention. Dr. West is always available to answer questions, provides clear feedback, and offers a lot of extra credit to help get you through the tough times (and there are quite a few tough times).
Given my experience over the past 3 years while taking online classes at UNCP, Dr. West is the best professor in the UNCP MPA program. He does not overburden students with busy work, but instead provides a legitimate assignment such as a case study or project. He then engages the class with a real discussion online instead of time consuming DBs.
Favorite professor at UNCP for a reason, he truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. You have to put in the work, but that's what graduate school is for, to help you grow. Read and participate.
Very helpful. Lectures aren't boring. Willing to help. Very easy to get in contact with through WebEx.
The syllabus is very intimidating, but I have learned a lot. If you cannot log-in for class you must watch his videos. Ask questions, the syllabus is long, but some details are missing and I have struggled when I didn't ask questions. This class is required for my degree, but I would definitely take another class with Dr. West.
Quantitative analysis is a difficult class, no matter what instructor teaches it. Dr. West does a wonderful job at answering all of your questions and being available for every student. If you are willing to put in the work, you will do well in this course. He is more than reasonable and actually wants his students to succeed.
I took PAD 5070, and I really appreciated the chance to do practical work in this class. It's not often that we are allowed to complete assignments that we can gain knowledge to aid in future real life projects.
This has been by far my favorite class in the pursuit of my Master's Degree. Dr. West is a wonderful professor and very very intelligent. The class is not hard but you definitely have to work for your grades. Dr. West is easy to talk to, he wants you to know what questions your asking and understand the concepts. He also is so funny!
Dr. West is a really good Professor he made the class very interesting and engaged students very well. The only recommendation is to update students about online quizzes better.
I was truly afraid to take this class as the syllabus appeared to be intimidating. This class provided all the things I needed to persevere as a future public administrator as he allows you to make hard decisions on your work, something public administrators are tasked to do. The Professor is hilarious, down to earth, and extremely smart. Loved it!
Just ok.
Dr West is a cool professor. Just be prepared to read because if you dont you wont pass the class. Overall Dr West is a great professor and I would take his class again.
He connects the information in the textbooks to current world problems in a way that makes it all easy to digest. The quizzes and tests are fairly easy if you read the yearbooks and watch the lectures. Make sure you take notes though.
Good classes are full of discussion. casual element. relates the text to the modern-day. cohesive
Dr. West is an excellent professor but he is not an easy grader and expects a lot from his students. I loved this class. The lectures and discussions were excellent, and, while it was a great addition to my major requirements, I will carry and use the content from this class for the rest of my life. A lot of reading and writing.
Very difficult class. Dr. West is accessible to students. He teaches short lectures but requires you go back and watch previous lectures he taught, which are not labeled by topic, only date. He will not tell you if you are right until your assignment is graded. If math isn't your thing, get a tutor. I survived only with help from a study group.
Very hard good personally but professionally very difficult need the class to graduate. And is extremely hard considering that Im not great at math and is very math heavy for a political science class
As a Graduate Professor, he does not spoon-feed you all the information you need and does not rightfully so. A smart individual that will help you learn a lot
Great professor who gives opportunities for extra credit. Good feedback as well
Dr. West has high expectations but is the most accessible professor I've had in the MPA program. His intelligence is second to none, yet he can bring complex information down to the class level. Challenging class, but it can be done with a group type construct or tutor if needed. Please DO NOT wait until the end of the program to take the class!
As others have noted, Dr. West does not spoon-feed his students. The lives of other people are frequently in the hands of public administrators, who wants a public administrator who does not know how to find information on their own. Dr. West will not be around to answer questions in a crisis. He teaches us to think, not how to follow directions
Dr. West was an amazing professor! I sincerely feel that I have learned from his class both professionally and academically. I would recommend him to anyone!
The class was challenging but if you do your work you will be fine.
Wow. What an icon!
Dr. West's class is a discussion based class. I never felt like I went into class and just sat in a lecture. He engages very well with the students, allows us to guide the conversation, and gives great feedback. There are two different books for this class you will have to get. There is a quiz on the reading every class. The reading is not terrible
Dr. West is a wonderful teacher who is passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Although he is likely too intelligent for the class, he does a very good job of explaining things for us as students to comprehend. I would highly recommend that students go to his labs because that is where I recieved the most help on the Stata Assignments.
Dr. West is very easy going. The work load isnt bad as long as you arent a lazy person. There is also a lab portion to the class that is very helpful. Be prepared to read for EVERY class and possibly a quiz.
Dr. West is an awesome professor although the material is a little tough. He does do his best to ensure that you understand the material but you definitely will have to do your part and read the textbooks that are assigned and you must do your assignments on time. Otherwise, his class is great and he is great as well!
I've had Dr. West for a few classes now and he is truly an amazing teacher. I would recommend taking any of his classes if you're interested in political science. He's a great person to learn from.
Great professor that loves what he does! Easy to understand, I just didnt understand. I got caught lacking with my grades especially in this one but I would definitely recommend Dr. West to a friend!
At first I was afraid to take this course, but the class grew on me. If you apply yourself to this course, then you should be able to grasp the material. I do recommend getting the books for this course because you will discuss them often.
Dr. West is a knowledgeable teacher with high expectations. Quantitative Analysis is a difficult topic and it was not easy to get straight answers about the material in his online class. More in-person instruction would have made the class more enjoyable. Don't be intimidated by the syllabus. It's hard, not impossible. Gives lots of extra credit.
Dr. West is very methodical, detailed oriented, and passionate about Quantitative Analysis (Methods). At the beginning of the semester, a lot of discombobulation with accessing the online youtube lectures (some of these are out of sequence) and the STATA tutorial videos. Once, you gain footing its a moderate pace for understanding. Class is doable.
Textbooks: Helfert is awesome. Sustein is convoluted and so ideas are diluted. Recommend: if a poli-sci or pre-law major, if a full time student Don't recommend: if working full time. Example: work deadlines + one other course, on top this course's 2 lectures, 2 textbooks, 1 paper, and a 3 hour midterm in one week was stressful.
Would take again. Will make you really dig deep, just do the work and enjoy a great professional.
Overall it was a good course and he was a great professor. He often had open discussions regarding the current political climate. If you wish to learn a great deal of the communicative aspects of political science along with expanding your knowledge of the present-day political system, I would definitely recommend this course.
Students are fearful of Dr. West's 5080 class. Maybe it is the math, but really there is nothing scary about the course. If you're looking to move forward career or education wise, it is a wonderful way to learn how to use STATA and properly decipher data outputs. Overall, Dr. West is engaged, communicative, and knowledgable. Hard work good grade
Difficult class
Dr. West is a nice professor, and you can tell that he enjoys teaching, besides being very knowledgeable. A con would be that during the lectures the opinion of the students would be more prominent than those of Dr. West. and I feel like we would sometimes discuss things out of the subject. (My Class was PLSS4020 nomenuchoice)
Probably the most useful course you will take as a polisci major. Dr. West is quirky, interesting, fair, and a great teacher. He speaks in a way that makes you listen up and realize he has something important to say. But, you HAVE to show up. Its worth it to do so and youre doomed if you dont.
Dr. West comes off hash in the beginning, but he lightened up on us as class moved along. He wants his students to research for their own answers, but this style can have a negative as well as a positive effect. The negative is students want to what he expects, but he expects us to research. It feels like a cycle. A use of rubrics would help.
Dr. West is a very good professor. He comes across as difficult but isn't. He's also a superhero as you can tell from the reviews. He once dove into lava to save a kitten and emerged unscathed. To learn this skill alone is worth the tuition.
One of the very best!
The best teacher in the program. He truly cares and trues to motivate students to think outside the box. I really enjoyed his lectures.
At first his syllabus makes him seem very harsh and strict. Then he starts his lectures and classes are lighthearted. I would take his class again because we only had two tests and one chapter of notes per week. His grading criteria is not lear at all. You will not know a final grade until they post.
I have enjoyed this class a lot. He allow you to be yourself in class. He conduct class very well! I would recommend him to any of my friends take. Wish I could take more classes with him.
IDS 3000-801. I highly recommend Dr. West. He is an amazing Professor, and you can tell he loves what he does, and he cares about his students.
Dr. West is kind & truly great at what he does. Throughout our online class, his personality and passion for teaching came through the screen in such a genuine way. On paper, he might seem strict at first, but once you actually get to meet him, you realize he's an amazing professor who wants his students to succeed. One of my fav classes! IDS 3000
I really enjoyed this class and Dr. West's teaching. I couldn't attend many live sessions due to work, but the recordings were always clear, helpful, and full of great information. Dr. West sets students up for success, and I truly appreciated her support and guidance.
Dr. West is a uniquely gifted teacher. I appreciated his knowledge and the way he guides his students to think critically. He wants to see his students be successful.
Dr. West's teaching style is clear, organized, and easy to follow. He explains difficult material in a way that makes sense and uses helpful examples to support understanding. Dr West actively engages with students, creating a supportive and engaging learning environment.
Dr.West is Awesome teacher..I would take him again and suggest any of my friends to take him. I enjoy our online class a lot.
Very good lectures.
Love Love Love this professor! Made class enjoyable and is super funny!
Work in this class was very manageable, only required that we participate in or rewatch lectures and submit weekly notes. Provided plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Dr. West demonstrates fairness and consistency in his teaching, and he shows a clear commitment to student success. He provides thorough explanations and offers helpful clarity on assignments whenever needed.
Awesome professor, the class has been the best thus far!
I enjoyed his class recordings and he explain everything so well!
He's very understanding and interacts with his students.
Follow the syllabus and do what is asked. Professor West connected the material with real world examples so it was easy to understand.
Great Professor 💯
I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience in IDS-3000-800 with Dr. West. From the very first week, he has created a welcoming, engaging, and intellectually rich learning environment that made the course truly enjoyable. His passion for Interdisciplinary Studies shows in every lecture, assignment, and interaction.
Dr. West is a phenomenal instructor of this course. His teaching methods are effective and are presented in a way that truly helps increase your chance of success in the course. I really appreciate his teaching style, and everything that I have learned from him and taking this course. Excellent job Dr. West and thank you!!!
Really enjoyed the class and learning the true meaning of IDS, he did amazing job teaching everything that I was interested in knowing.
I found this professor extremely intelligent and helpful. He is one of the best I've ever had. There is a decent amount of work to be done in his class but not without reward. He is always there to answer questions and very present and interacting with the students.
Great professor! Very engaging lectures, fair grading, and very approachable. I would definitely take another class with them.
Dr. West was an amazing professor. He is a very understanding professor who believes in understanding the material. I will miss our webex meetings. Thanks for a great semester.
He does not accept questions as they deduct points from your grade (I did not like this), but if you watch the videos the questions are usually answered. He seems to make the class more difficult on purpose to teach skills, but it makes the class annoying for older students. I would take the class again as the actual material is very easy.
Dr. West was an amazing professor! about one of the best professors that I've had in the past 10 years that I've been in college. He is very charismatic, easy to approach and welcoming. He makes the class a pleasure and is always helpful. He will go the extra mile to ensure that each student has what they need to be successful.
Participation and note taking are key.
Take notes and participation
Great lectures, clear understanding of class, interesting notes for everyday life. Definitely enjoyed the class.
this is a great teacher to take.
pretty straight forward class, if taken online be sure to be in meeting as he will give answers for test or test you for the meetings , hand written notes will be need to be turned in if still online student.
Professor West demonstrates a high level of professionalism in all interactions with us students. He is exceptionally easy to contact, always responding promptly to emails and inquiries. His communication is clear and concise. I appreciate the professor's approachable demeanor and willingness to provide additional support when needed.
He was amazing--very thorough, and willing to help, as long as you do your part too!
He's very good just be ready to read.
I thought it was a good class and very easy to keep up with. Anyone that is
This was an online class. The assignments were all applicable to the course material and at no point did I feel like I was completing "busy work." The professors videos gave the impression that he would be a very interesting lecturer in person. Overall I would recommend this professor.
Great professor, everything was up to date and on point
Dr. West is proficient at meeting the expectations of the course and coursework. He ensures to go through the material that's necessary for each student to exceed in the course. He's pretty thorough and clear on his stance. Pay attention during his lectures lol. I'd take any course he's assigned!
Very good teacher!
Overall he was a good professor. Just very very in depth. Class was not hard at all.
The professor is fair.
