This is a tough class. There is a lot of material and we go through it quickly. If you make a point to see him in hiss office or outside of class, he will bend over backwards to help you.
The class is hard, but you can drop your lowest exam, including the final. He gives good non-science explinations as is super funny.
It's not hard to get a good grade as long as you try. He uses an app which takes attendance and asks you questions during class. If you get above the required attendance, it's all extra credit! There are 3 exams and a final and he drops the lowest grade. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! He is very helpful and tells you what you need to know for the tests.
He's a really friendly guy and definitely made class fun BUT his exams were difficult. I recommend reading, doing his reviews, and going to office hours if needed. Attendance wasn't mandatory but I do think that going will really help you in the long run. He gave tons of extra credit too.
Fun class. His tests are tough. DO NOT CRAM FOR HIS EXAMS. It does not work. Grades are based on exams and in class questions that you answer I your phone.
This is a tough class! His test's are extremely challenging and require a lot of studying in order to make a decent grade. The concepts he goes over in class are very detailed and complicated. I would highly recommended GOING TO CLASS! He uses questions through Top Hat and if you accumulate enough Top Hat points they become extra credit.
Grades are based on exams and Top Hat questions, which are asked in class. Lots of extra credit if you show up and answer Top Hat questions. Because you can drop one exam, he will not let you take an exam late, regardless of the reason. Come to class prepared and you will make an A. Try to study the day before an exam and you will do poorly.
He's nice and funny. I never really took advantage of the office hours, but I did miss about a week of class for medical reasons and he was very understanding. Biology is not my strong suit, but I enjoyed having him as a professor. I would take one of his classes again for sure, even though the tests were very hard. You can't just memorize stuff.
Great Guy! textbook not needed because you can print out all the power points which have everything you need to know for tests. he uses an app for attendance and class questions that rack up extra credit points. He drops lowest exam(final if you want to).
Bergh is a great teacher to get for Bio. Not only are is lectures very concise and clear cut, but he also provides reviews for every test that are straight to the point, making it to where you don't need to buy your text book at all. He uses Tophat for attendance and once you meet the 50 point criteria everything left over is used for extra credit.
I took Dr. Bergh for BIO 1320 and he is a great professor. His lectures are great, he is very clear about grading criteria, he is funny and the material is interesting so you are definantly interested and entertained. He has very flexible office hours and he is always there if you dont understand something. In my opinion, he loves what he does.
Yeah he's funny and gives a bunch of extra credit if you go to every class but we were learning the exact same material my roommate who is a BIO major was learning! Modern is supposed to be much easier than functional, not the same material.. My other friends had different professors and their material was much easier.
His class is tough. He gives lots of examples to help you understand complex material. The tests are tough, but this is balanced out by Top Hat. Make sure you go to class and earn the free Top Hat points, those saved my semester. I basically got an entire letter grade just for going to class and answering the Top Hat questions.
This class wasn't the easiest, but as long as you attend everyday you have a good chance at making the grade you want. He is always very willing to help you if you're confused and is really passionate about what he is teaching.
Great professor. I'm a business major so biology isn't my stuff but he really made things as understandable as he could. One of my favorite professors this past semester
Dr. Bergh really loves teaching. He tells stories about his family and a lot of hpful examples. His tests are hard, but he gives a lot of extra credit for showing up and answering questions in class.
Dr. Bergh is a great teacher. The material is hard and he goes in detail. If you start studying early, the class is fairly straightforward and easy. I tried to study the day before the first exam and I did poorly. When I started preparing earlier, my grades improved. He lets you drop a test, including the final, so one exam doesn't kill you.
Personally I think he is an awesome teacher. I had him for a 8 am but he was so funny he made it bearable! I struggled with Bio in High School (took it twice) but for some reason, his class made me really get it! I studied hard for tests and it really pays off. DONE study the night or day before, you will not pass. Also, go to class.
Dr. Bergh is a great professor. There is no getting around the fact that the material is difficult, its Biology!! Dr. Bergh makes you laugh while you learn it. Gives extra credit for attending and answering questions (TopHat). Also, he likes to meet with students who have questions or don't quite understand the material
Professor Bergh is awesome! I love his class and his extra credit is a life saver. I made a 97, 75, and 97 on my first three tests and I still only had to make a 58 on my fourth exam to be exempt from the final and get an A. Attend class and listen to lectures and you will not need to read. Do the online homework! Highly recommend him.
He says attendance is not mandatory, but it is. He utilizes an app called "Top Hat" for every class period. You must text the new attendance code every time to show you are there. The same app is where you do "pop quizzes". He has up to 3 surprise questions in a class period. --Beware there is online homework, you will not pass if you don't do it
This class is tough if you don't work at it. There are online homework and readings that end up totalling the value of an ex. I skipped a few and my grade suffered. I bombed my first test and went to his office. He talked me through the material and helped me improve my study plans. I should end up with an A because he lets you drop an exam.
I love Professor Bergh! I hate Biology but he made this class about as interesting as possible. I thought the tests were pretty easy, but it differs from person to person. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should go regularly because getting points from Top Hat questions if part of your grade. Also the HW has unlimited tries, which is really nice.
Love Dr. Bergh! I am not a bio major, or interested in the subject but he made this class extremely enjoyable. He is hilarious and makes the learning as fun as possible. Be sure to do the online homework and go to class. He uses in class questions that will definitely boost your grade. Tests are extremely tough, but if you study, you should be fine
Dr. Bergh is awesome. His exams are tough, but you get to drop one. I dropped the final and it was awesome. I did not even show up.
I took this class at 8AM. He assigns homework and reading assignments through the book's website and he also lets you drop your lowest exam. I have a pretty good recall memory, but there is a lot of information in this class. Start preparing for exams at least a week prior and you should do fine.
Dr. Bergh is very passionate in Biology and it shows through his teaching. The tests are difficult due to wording, but if you take/study the notes, it makes the tests tolerable. Homework/extra credit are big in overall grade as well. Highly Recommend.
Super funny and enjoyable, his class for non majors is perfect if you like bio and need the credit. I almost wish I had to take more bio because I enjoy his classes so much.
The way Dr. Bergh teaches, his class is enjoyable. His tests are hard, but with the homework assignments and in class questions, it is easy to get an A. I scored between 70 and 76 on each test and easily have an A. I don't even have to take the final since he lets you drop your lowest exam.
Takes attendance and asks top hat questions during calls, so don't skip! But there are extra points available in top hat questions for built in extra credit. Tests are tricky if you just memorize the information, but don't comprehend it. Hes super funny and good at explaining things. I would totally recommend him.
By far the best bio professor I have had. His lectures are clear. He presents a lot of material and explains it very well. His tests are tough, but you can drop the lowest one. I am not taking the final and I still have a B. He uses Connect from the publisher and that has had a few issues, but he is fair in resolving problems.
So, this is not a joke of a class.. It is not an easy A. You get 4 test, 1 of which you get to drop. I dropped my final because I already had a high A. You will have lots of homework (online and easy) and then tophat for attendance and 10% of your grade. STUDY THE EXAM REVIEWS! He is a GREAT professor and is highly recommended.
Do not fall behind in this class. There is a lot of material and it comes at you quickly. If you do the readings and online homework, that is an easy 20% of your grade that is an A. He lets you drop an exam, including the final. The class is fun and he brings student comments into the discussion. I highly recommend him over some of the others.
Bergh is one hilarious man. I made D's on all the exams and got a B in the class. Don't know what I was thinking when I chose Bio for my science courses. Bergh is awesome thought, would recommend!
This was a hard class, but Berg was great. I am not a science person, so the material was tough. Do the homework, it saved my butt.
I liked this class more than I thought I would. It is interesting and he is funny. Lab was awful, but you can't get around that. At least 30% of your grade is from online homework and easy in class questions.
TAKE HIM! If you have the chance PLEASE take Bergh. His reviews are so helpful on the test, he's extremely helpful in the classroom and he's interesting and keeps biology painless. He understands when you're taking modern bio that it shouldn't be that hard and he definitely keeps it simple. I wish every professor was like Bergh. I enjoyed class.
Outstanding class. He is funny and makes it interesting. The tests are tough, but the online homework more than makes up for it.
Take him. Wont regret it. Helpful nice guy
He is truly great at what he does. If you need help understanding anything, speak up! The online homework will help you so do it! The test are tricky. After you take the test go talk to him about your score. He breaks down the material very well. Won't regret taking him!
I am a student who struggles in science and Bergh really turned it around for me. His lectures are engaging and funny, and he explains the information in a way that is clear and easy to remember. If you pay attention in class and study for tests you'll be fine. I highly recommend you to take him if biology isn't your thing!
Dr. Bergh is a great professor and knows Biology very well. I recommend taking him. His lectures are funny and his powerpoints have lots of detail. His tests are 50 multiple choice questions and if you study, you'll do well. He drops the lowest exam so that is a benefit.
This was a good class. Dr. Berg is funny and very helpful. He posts all of his slides at the beginning of the semester and holds some review sessions prior to exams. The tests are tough, but not bad if you study. Lab is boring.
Honestly one of the best classes I have taken. He is so funny and makes class fun so you want to go. I'm not a biology major but I actually enjoyed class. Go to class to get top hat/quiz grades. He is super nice and very helpful if you have questions.
Professor Bergh Is a phenomenal professor. I normally have a difficulty with Science classes and I enjoyed this class so much. He takes his time and makes the lectures very interesting. He goes above and beyond for his students and make sure you understand the material. Go to class, participate in top hat, STUDY STUDY for test and you will be fine!
Biology is a tough subject for some people, but Bergh does a great job of breaking it down and making it easily understandable. He drops a test too, so if you didn't do too well on one you can have another chance. Pay attention in class, and you should do fine on the tests!
Top hat is a thing so it is very important to show up to class. Best biology teacher ive had so far. I got a 77, 88, and 81 on the three tests and got an A for the class not needing to take a final. Just show up and study and you'll do fine. great teacher.
Bergh is the best! The class is pretty tough but he is really good at explaining things in a better way. Top hat also helps your grade SO much so make sure to go to class! Reviews and old powerpoints are really helpful for the tests
The best Biology professor anyone can have hands down. It is a lot of work and memorizing because it is Biology. Puts the slides up for each class and chapter. There is a lot of online homework and reading but do all of that and you have a good grade. He gives study guides for each test which is EXTREMELY helpful! I also got 16 pts in extra credit!
Professor Bergh was awesome. I always looked forward to going to his class. His exams are tough if you half ass the exam reviews he gives you, but if you do them and start studying a week before the exam you will be fine. TopHat questions during class. He's super funny, makes class interesting. I would take him again.
He is the funnest teacher ever! He's really good at explaining things, and he answers questions during lecture if you are confused. He is the best teacher I had this semester. He makes you earn your grade, but is there to help basically whenever you need him!
By far the best professor I've had at Texas state! He is hillarious and explains things in a way that makes it easy to understand. What you need to know for the test he makes very clear!
If you have the chance to take him.. TAKE HIM! He is hilarious, I hate biology and suck at it but he made it fun and easy to learn. There is McGraw-Hill connect homework's almost every week and he uses a similar clicker system to count attendance. You will not regret taking him!
He is a good teacher but not necessarily easy. He is good at teaching the material and will answer questions you have. Make sure you understand the material for the test and know how to apply it because the test is not just knowing the definitions. Gives extra credit if you actually go to class.
Bergh keeps lecture interesting with humor, and he gives out some random extra credit throughout the semester. The only bad thing is the lab. It's very difficult and unorganized and counts for a fourth of your bio grade. PLUS you have to take a lab midterm/final. This class is a lot of work, but Bergh does his best to help students do well.
LOVE HIM! His lectures are so funny, always looked forward to this class. The textbook is used for online assignments. There isn't a attendance policy but he uses a question app every class, so skip & you don't get points for the day. Provides extra credit. Gives you power points & makes a reviews that are EXACTLY like the test. TAKE HIM TRUST ME!!
The BEST professor I have had the grace of taking. Took for 1320 and 1421 Modern Bio. He is absolutely the funniest professor at Texas State. I am terrible at Biology, but he explains it so that everyone can understand. TAKE HIM. Go to lectures just to brighten your day up. He truly cares about his students and it shows. Cant recommend enough!
First thing, Bergh is BY FAR the best professor at TXST. He is so funny, his lectures are amazing, and he is always available to help with questions. Tests are difficult, but if you study in advance then you'll do fine. Attendance isn't required, but if you skip then you'll be lost because his lectures really help and he covers a lot of material.
Best biology teacher I have ever had. I actually enjoyed going to his class because he was funny and his lectures didn't put me to sleep. There is online homework, but its not hard and you can use the textbook. Tests are multiple choice and not outrageously hard if you went to lecture and studied.
Would HIGHLY recommend this professor. He's hilarious and makes class entertaining. Instead of attendance, there are in-class response activities. Just turn online assignments/HW in on time. He gives long reviews, but if you study the whole thing, it'll be a pretty easy A.
Funny teacher!!! Attendance isnt required but theres top hat question you have to answer every lecture. Tests are hard, need to understand concepts, but youve given a review
Dr. Bergh is amazing. He gives real world examples that makes the material easier to understand. Occasionally gives extra credit that is only available in class, so make sure you go.
Bergh is pretty great. Tough class but passable if you attend all lectures and study. He is funny but it isn't distracting. The class in entertaining and inspiring, he brings up good points relating to normal day life. He will most likely offend you with his humor at some point.
I hate science but this class actually wasn't too bad. Top hat points are lifesavers and he drops lowest test grade.
Bergh is an amazing professor! He understands that this class is for non-science majors and his tests show that. Study his reviews and you'll get an A. Amazing, funny, and sarcastic guy!
Hilarious guy, cares about his students success. Lectures contain lots of material but he posts powerpoints online. LOTS of homework, drops the lowest assignment. Tests aren't too hard but you definitely need to study a couple days in advance given the amount of material. Drops lowest test grade, final optional. Dont miss assignments and go to clas
He is so funny and makes his lectures entertaining. There is a ton of homework including learn-smart reading and homework, there are also two long papers. Tests are tough but I did pretty good on them for not studying too much. You need to know lots of details to feel good about the tests but its not horrible.
Joel Bergh is a funny guy. Does NOT accept late work under any circumstances (which killed my grade). Tests are hard but he does help you out. Go to class for top hat points!!!
I hate biology, but Burg made it tolerable. I leaned a lot. He had two papers that came late in the semester. He really cares for the students, but he does not accept late homework, so stay on top of everything.
He's hilarious. He uses TopHat, so I recommend going to class so you get those points. He uses your basic McGraw Hill. His test reviews are PAGES long, but I would say that they match the exams pretty well. If you just attend class and do all of your work it should be a easy class for you.
He totally understands that this is for non-science majors. I was intimidated before, but if you go to class there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit. His lectures were informative and entertaining. You have to buy the book with connect online, but you dont need a paper copy. Totally recommend if you have to take bio!
Professor Bergh is a great teacher. All of his lectures are interesting, and he is hilarious. I am not good at science, and I still enjoyed this class. He is sarcastic but still funny. If you have to take a science class, take this one.
Do the study guide and do well on the quiz, can be an easy A if you try. Essays are a little hard because he doesn't give a lot of guidelines but he grades easy. Lectures are super funny and interesting. Great professor
Dr. Bergh is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He is always willing to explain and help you even if it's a dumb question. He is super encouraging and his lectures are the BEST. He relates difficult concepts to something we relate to and understand! Also Hilarious!
Awesome professor! Gives a lot of opportunities to boost your grade, fair and very funny
Dr. Bergh is an amazing professor and if you can take him, DO IT. There are more than enough opportunities in this class to boost your grade. He'll add points to your test if he realizes that a question was unfair. Homework is easy but there's a lot. This isn't a blow off class but if you put in effort, you'll make an A or B no problem.
I took him for functional bio. His class is pretty easy if you complete all assignments, such as quizzes online & reading HW online. GO TO CLASS. Attendance isnt mandatory, but if you go you will answer tophat questions and after you answer 70 questions the rest is extra credit. His tests are HARD, and Bio is hard in general so you have to study
I'm not good at biology but really loved going to his class. You definitely have to study because of the material but he works with you to get extra points. Highly recommend
Bergh was a fantastic teacher for bio. as long as you listen in class and read the textbook you will get an a.
He does his best at teaching you all the things you need to know, but this class is just a generally hard class. I used his lectures and took notes from the book and was able to do very well!
Good teacher, great lecturer but this is the hardest class I have taken yet. WAY too in depth for someone who is not a science major. I am a business major and taking this class was not a good idea because the level of difficulty and amount of work. I would go with something else unless you want your main focus to be this class.
Tests are hard, but he really wants you to understand the processes so you can build on them in upper courses. He cares a lot about how his students do and tries to help explain it in different ways to help students understand. This is just a class where you have to study and actually learn the material in order to do well.
One of the best professors I have had a Texas State. I hate biology and dreaded taking it. I actually enjoyed going to this class. He really wants you to understand the material. It is a hard class, but it is worth it.
Super cool Professor, really wants you to learn. Was doing good at the beginning of the semester then he did group work which totally messed up my grade, but Bio is hard in general so I guess he was trying to help. He's also pretty funny and very approachable. Test are hard and you do need to study.
Dr. Bergh is very up front about his class. It is alot of information in a short amount of time. However, his lectures are good and you need them to pass the test. He is blunt and you know what to expect.
One of my fav professors I've ever had. He is super engaging and hilarious. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you will want to go bc he's enjoyable and for extra tophat points. Tons of online homework, but it boosts your grade. this is a really hard class. The tests are NOT straightforward, so make sure you go to SI sessions. they really help
He is literally the best! Hes hilarious and really wants everyone to understand. He keeps it really and is veryyyyyy organized. The way he has tracs setup is amazing and youre never confused about what you need to do. BIO isnt easy for everyone but he is a great teacher.
He is such a fun professor and has quite the potty mouth lmao. His test are VERY heavy and all scenario based so if you don't know the definitions then you probably wont get the scenario. I would recommend SI sessions or meeting with him during office hours. We used TopHat A LOT. He offers extra credit and is not the type to bump your grade.
The majors bio class is no joke. He does a good job of connecting the dots between the concepts. His tests have a lot of application questions. I was not prepared for it on the first exam and failed. After that, I knew how to prepare and the class became much easier. This is not the class to take to slack.
For non-science majors, Dr. Bergh makes you work too hard to connect the dots. Theres homework due on connect for 4 out of 7 days of the week and the tests are application based so you need deep understanding. He gives no review for exams. He cares about his subject so if you arent a science person, dont take him.
Really solid professor. Took him for non-major biology and the class wasn't exceptionally difficult. There's a lot of homework and a midterm paper. Really funny guy and very enthusiastic about teaching and has no problem helping people if asked.
Bergh is great, but the class is no joke. It is important that you understand the concepts, if you just memorize definitions, you will fail. If you go to office hours, he will go make sure you leave understanding the stuff. There is a big paper, but he grades really easy on it.
Had great humor and made me laugh. Definitely struggled in this class but my fault all together. Material is hard but can be learned with dedication
The absolute best. He actually wants you to do well and is genuinely a nice guy, despite how he deems himself. Tophat questions in class for attendance/credit, clear hmwk due dates, rigid on policies. If you attend lectures and actually pay attention, the class is really easy. Seriously best prof I've had.
Chill professor, has a nice sense of humor and DEFINITELY applies it to his lectures. Look through the study guides as you progress through the class and it's a piece of cake. Lets you drop your lowest test grade and typically reopens TopHat questions so everyone can get the points for it. Take his class!
Amazing professor. He's on your side and wants you to succeed - don't be afraid to talk to him. Also don't skip class - it's way more difficult to skip class and try catch up than it is to show up even if you're struggling to understand concepts.
Bergh is a great prof. 4 exams + MGHL assignments. Drops lowest exam grade then 2 hmwk/rding assignments. Lectures are engaging and actually coincide with exams. Understanding prof and a nice guy. Took online and wasnt stressful. If you need to take bio I 100% recommend Bergh.
Really amazing professor! I 100% recommend him. He drops the lowest exam score which is nice too.
Pretty good professor. He was pretty funny, and I felt like his lectures were very helpful
Dr. Bergh was a good professor that was very knowledgeable about the subject. He will lecture the entire class, but he's funny and will relate biology to a lot of college things so it goes by fast. Show up, take notes, do the homework, study and you'll make an A!
Hes amazing. Hes very chill and loves to teach, knows his stuff. Would recommend. He just wants the best for you, but you do need to do the Tophat Questions and do your connect work!
This class is hard but he tells you that on day one. There is a lot of homework but it pays off. I made Cs and Ds on all of my exams but, with the homework, I ended up with a B. You can drop the final, which is a plus. He really cares about you and the subject. His lectures are funny and not what I expected. I hate Biology, but not this class.
He is very knowledgeable and very funny. He will lecture the whole time. He is also very accommodating when it comes to ODS/ADA, just let him know beforehand. Get ready to answer TopHat questions and do Connect Homework outside of class. Overall he's great and I would totally take him again.
Professor Bergh is an awesome professor teaches Biology very clearly. He breaks it down so that you understand it, and makes sure to answer your questions. He's very funny and incorporates many real-life examples to make the concepts easier. His study guides directly reflect the tests, and the exams are pretty easy.
I was struggling in this class until I went to his office hours. He explained things very clearly, answered my questions, and made sure I was good before I left his office. There is a lot of work in the class and it moves fast, but he really does want you to succeed.
He's funny and he always gets his points across. his class isn't boring and he definitely made bio easier that what it actually is
Dr. Bergh was an amazing professor! Very funny and informative. I had a great time in his class.
He taught this class knowing it was a nonmajor course and none of us cared about bio, and still managed to make it extremely interesting. If you pay attention in class & study the guide he gives you then it should be easy to get a good grade. Hes really funny and keeps class interesting, I dont like science and this was my favorite class this year.
Dr. Bergh was an amazing professor overall. He always hosts office hours and if you're unable to attend he is willing to set up a time outside of class for you. Everything covered in the lectures were on the exams. Easy if you study and keep up with material!
Bergh makes the class interesting and you really do learn a lot. All Bio 1330 profs make you do these common worksheets and they suck, they need to redesign them. I went to his office hours and they help. It is a fast paced and difficult class, but if I can get through it, anyone can. I like Bergh, but I am changing my major.
during lecture he gives day-to-day examples that make the material easier to understand, most of the time they're funny. if you study and keep up with the material you'll be good!
I didn't understand most of it and I passed. Dr. Bergh truly cares how you do, go to his office hours if you're struggling. Do the reading, a lot of the reading will click during the lectures. Do all the hw, you can check it. Go to class, you'll get extra credit with top hat. Study your butt off like I did, and you'll pass his class. Good luck!
Dr. Bergh is amazing. He helps keep the class entertaining which was great to have since I had him at 8 am. There are readings for the homework which I suggest going through as they'll be useful for tests. He will always stop for questions if someone doesn't understand. Overall great and hilarious professor which also makes time for his students.
his class was the best!! he was funny and made bio fun. study for his tests and do every tophat!! i got low test scores but he drops the lowest and top hat counts as extra points after a 60!!
Professor Bergh was great. This is a very easy class to take as he makes everything easy to understand. He gives extra credit at the end through the attendance questions. The only downside to his class was that I had to pay $15 dollars for the attendance account. The exams themselves were easy even though there were never any curves.
I did not understand anything in this class, but still received a B. He is a great professor, but there is so much information that made it difficult to stay on track. You are graded by a lot so even if you do badly on tests you should pass. He is funny just wish he made it a little easier considering it was a nonscience major class.
This class is hard, I took it my first semester of freshmen year, and I'm not even a science major lol. But even though I still only pulled a D I definitely would have dropped or failed if I didn't have this prof. If you go up and ask for help he will, I went up a few times and he knew me by name. He's very funny and a good teacher.
This was a new class to TXST and there were some rough spots. It is clear that Dr. Bergh wanted us to do well and they worked really hard to make sure we found a research lab and that we understood the process. The organization of the class was not helpful and Bergh was upfront about finding out what didn't work.
Attendance is not mandatory, but that's how you get your top hat points. Very sarcastic, but SO funny. Hot take: it's an easy class as long as you study. His slides have everything you need. Just actually show up, do your work on time, and study what he tells you to study. Your grade will thank you. He wont try to trick you on tests
I was really struggling in this class until I went to his office hours. He was never bothered because I was there. He asked questions to find out where I was at, and then he thoughtfully answered all of my questions. Bergh wanted to make sure that I understood the material before I left. I got lost in the crowd of the class. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
I hate bio, but Berg made the class enjoyable. He explains things really well and uses examples that are relatable. I highly recommend him.
By far, one of the best professors that I have ever had! They want you to do well and work really hard to help you out. You have to do work, but it is not as hard as you might think. There are four exams and you can drop the lowest. This includes the final. The class has a lot of information, but they are amazing.
This class is a lot of work, but it is clear this is by design. There are reading and homework assignments that can really save your day. I did not do well on my exams, but the other homework assignments were easy to do and they really pulled up my grade.
Dr. Bergh is such a fun professor! However, you do need to pay attention. Do the homework's and reading's and try to do the best you can on tests because there really isn't many extra credit opportunities. He's available to help you understand the material, though and he definitely is very knowledgeable on the subject.
This class has a lot of work and I ran into personal issues and this class fell to the bottom of my priority list. After Spring Break, I failing the class and asked for help. Dr. Burg really went above and beyond. There was never judgement, he worked with me to find the best solutions. He genuinely cares and wants you to do well.
Dr. Bergh was FANTASTIC! He cared about each and everyone of his students and wanted us to do well. I highly suggest his office hours if you get lost in class. TAKE GOOD NOTES you are allowed to use them on the exam. Highly recommend going to class everyday. Make sure to study for the test as well. My FAVORITE professor at txst by far!
This is the best teacher you will ever take at texas state, bumped me up some points & makes the class good. This class is NOT an easy A though, takes a lot of good test scores to even be close to an A, some background info form highschool will prepare you to do well in this class though
Very engaging when lecturing and explains things in a way thats relatable to students. However, this is not a easy class. To get a good grade you will have to study and you will need to attend class. Exams are open note however it's often students run out of time when they depend on that alone. Do your best and he will work with you.
Bergh loves his job. I took Modern Bio spring of '24. TAKE ORGANIZED NOTES! Attendance is not necessary, but I do recommend going to every lecture. He uses top hat for participation points, and there is extra credit built into those points. The lectures are information heavy- bio is hard. He slows down if asked, & does a good job re-explaining.
Super easy class to pass, all exams are open note and have detailed study guides and all hws have unlimited attempts. As long as you do the hws and readings and score decent on the exams you are pretty much guaranteed to pass or even get an A. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are top hat questions asked during class that are worth points.
Dr. Bergh made a tough class a lot of fun. He told jokes and personal stories that somehow made the lectures easier to follow. He encouraged students to go to his office and he even would meet you in the cafeteria close to class. He never made me feel dumb for asking a question, he just explained it and made sure I got it before moving on.
One of the BEST professors ever. He is funny and makes the material interesting. The exams are all open note and you can skip the final if you do well on the other exams. The readings and homework gives you a boost to your tests.
This is not an easy class, but if you do the home work you can pass.he is not boring.
Lectures are super informative and never boring. While you do not have to go to class, I cannot recommend it enough. He explains things using analogies that I can relate to. He is excellent makes biology a very digestible class especially for those of us who hate the subject. The work load is also very doable for this class.
I can't lie, Dr. Bergh is a wonderful professor. He asked us to review-bomb his RMP so people don't sign up for his class, but I can't do that. For non-science majors, the material isn't easy, but even as a certified Bio-hater, his classes were engaging and I felt I truly learned. Didn't quite squeak out an A, but what I learned was more important.
He was a funny professor but very fast paced, taking notes was difficult as he jumped from topic to topic and I always fell behind. Homework was very easy though but the exams are very long, 50+ questions. He claims attendance wasn't mandatory but was graded in tophat. Big tophat user and it counts a lot towards your grade.
This guy is such a G. You also get as many cheat sheets as you want for tests, but tests are a lot of questions so you still have to study or else you'll run out of time trying to thumb through notes. Engaging lectures and makes everyone laugh frequently. Good amount of points easily earned by showing up to class.
Great professor who makes a tough subject engaging. Attendance is mandatory but worth it - he uses fun analogies and is happy to clarify. unstuck study was a lifesaver for preparing for exams alongside the textbook.
Not a great professor if you want to learn. Yes this class is difficult because of content but Joel doesn't make it better. He teaches way to fast, reads off a powerpoint and doesn't explain concepts well. The exams are also difficult because he words the questions in such weird ways. I would suggest taking a different professor
This professor is so funny and honestly makes biology bearable. If you are wondering what professor to choose for your Biology course, choose him, trust me! His goal for his students is to have them pass. I failed like 2/3 of the exams in this course and I still passed. (Don't hate on me I am horrible at bio) But that just shows that he truly cares
Professor Bergh was hilarious and overall an awesome person. Homework was done through connect assignments and we had 4 exams. The exams are open notes but still pretty difficult even though biology is pretty difficult overall. I recommend following the study guides and keeping up with homework assignments. Attendance was done through top hat!
Dr Bergh was a great professor! He made lectures so entertaining and funny. The exams were pretty difficult, especially for someone who studies a lot and for an open note exam. However, they are definitely manageable. He was great with getting back to students, too. Overall, a great guy. I would recommend him.
He was a very nice and funny professor. Very chill and casual but not to the point of it being off-putting or unprofessional. I still really struggled in this class despite studying but it's more because I am bad at science classes and didn't apply myself enough. If you put more effort in than I did, you will succeed in this class.
Loved Professor Bergh! He made class fun and always entertaining, relating topics to everyday life examples. A few assignments a week but nothing too difficult, I would just recommend doing them ahead of class. Exams were a bit difficult, but I mean it is biology so kind of expected. Couldn't recommend him enough though
I cannot say enough good things about this man because he actually helped me understand bio. He is so entertains and cares so much about his students. His tests are hard! But it's open notes which matters the most.
Im not a biology person and i really did not mind this class. Dr Bergh is a great professor and he is very passionate about biology. All tests are in person but you can bring as many review sheets as you need. He is a big pack back user and does a few questions every class. Also mcgraw hill but very doable. Take him if you need the biology credit!
This teacher was my favorite this semester. I enjoyed going to all his lectures because I'd always learn something. He's great at teaching to understand and he's very funny. Sometimes I wonder if maybe he wasn't a teacher, he'd be a comedian lol. I recommend his class 100%.
I appreciate that he tries to make boring biology lectures funny with his personality. He allows notes for tests which is always nice. The tests are difficult even with notes, but definitely passable with little to no studying if you bring your lecture notes. Would reccomend!
Attendance is graded through tophat, but you can miss quite a few classes and be fine. He's a very good lecturer and things make more sense if you go. The homework is very easy. Tests are open note and the lowest one is dropped, there is a study guide for each one. He was really funny and cared about the students, definitely take him if you can.
Took him for a month course and the amount of classwork he gave was reasonable. He gave good feedback on papers and projects. He was very accessible and responded fast to emails. The exams were open-ended questions and they were challenging. However, he is willing to give you feedback before turning them in.
I took his 4311 online summer course and felt that he grades very harshly, often times with very poor assignment instructions that lack details. He then marks points off for things he did not specify on the rubric/instructions. Feels impossible to get an A due to this. We also had a group assignment for an online 5 wk course….really not enjoyable
This was my first online class and it was really difficult. The Canvas page is easy to navigate and they communicate really well. The class is hard because all of the assignments can be answered in various ways. They say it is to get us to think and defend a position, but it can be overwhelming when you are not sure.
The class in general is hard, you will have to study on your own time with the LA's because simply going to the lectures will not be enough to pass the test. He tries his best to keep the lectures fun and fill them with jokes but sometimes it's hard to retain the information he's trying to tell us about. Really chill professor who does his best
Great prof, lectures are informative and hes a super funny guy. Tests are open note, and assignments online are easy and help to understand the content. Very approachable. Does TopHat questions during lecture and those make up a fair portion of your grade so show up to class.
Great Professor!!!! Super interactive with his student, wants you to learn and understand the material. A little fast paced but that because there is a lot of material to cover. Gives you a study guide that is just like the test and is super helpful. Sometimes makes a kahoot that has questions directly from the test. Choose him as a professor!!
He's kind and funny, and an excellent teacher who explains material clearly. The M/W/F schedule gave helpful flexibility. Tests were fair and reflected lectures; Top Hat and McGraw Hill assignments were given for hw. Workload is manageable, doable ahead of time. Use LA reviews, office hours, and rewatch lectures to secure test prep. :)
Professor Bergh was hilarious! He made lectures amazing and genuinely tried to help students succeed. He offered Extra Credit and used Kahoots while clearly directing us to the information for the exam, making prep much easier. I would absolutely take him again and highly recommend him!
Nice professor. I'm not a STEM major, so I didn't take the class to seriously, but the tests were open-note. However, the test review was never like the actual test.I would recommend this class, though.
Attendance itself is not graded, but he utilizes Top Hat in-class, so try not to miss too many lectures. I honestly don't understand how people fail this class because all of his tests are open note. Knowledgeable, funny, and great professor overall.
