He's an **** and definitely full of himself. Class is a little repetitve but semi-interesting, and at least he makes a point. Not that bad over all but grades hard!

Fun at first, but way too full of himself. Not hard if you go to class and participate. Proofread your papers and he will like you. Has a sick mind and if you stoop to his level you are good to go.

GOOD PROFESSOR, BUT HARD GRADER. NEED TO BE CLEAR AND GO TO HIM TO PROOFREAD YOUR PAPERS. HE ALWAYS HAS OFFICE HOURS, SO USE THEM. EXAMS WERE PRETTY EASY. READ MATERIAL, CLASS ISN'T A MUST BUT DEFINATELY HELPFUL FOR EXAMS.

really interesting guy who has a lot to say. comes to class with no notes, just kind of talks about whatever comes to mind. get your papers checked with him b4 handing them in cause he will tell you what to write. easy tests and really funny if you get his sense of humor

I actually really enjoy the class. There is no textbook and he just lectures all class about interesting topics. The exams aren't very hard....I didn't study at all and still got a solid B. I'd recommend the class.

Some of the readings can be rather boring but the lectures are great he keeps them interesting and cracks a few jokes but not too many. I'd really recommend this class to anyone that has a real interest in soc. Tests really aren't that bad if you pay attention to lectures and read the readings.

Great professor, great class, very entertaining, and the work load is very reasonable. Tests could be a little hard, but if you pay attention in class and do the readings(max 20 pgs)you'll be fine. I would recommend this class to anyone as a breadth requirement. Prof Best makes the class go fast and his lectures are far from boring you to sleep.

Class is always very interesting. Missing a class or two is not a huge issue; the textbook is quite literally a transcript of his lectures. Very entertaining lecturer. Have him look over your paper before submitting it. Also, make absolutely sure you know what you're talking about if you plan on raising your hand.

I took Best for 201 & loved the class so much I picked up a Soci Minor & took 209 with him the next semester. EASY A's! Just go to class & listen, read the articles/chapters. If you do this, you have to try really hard not to get an A. Best is sarcastic & makes hilarious facial expressions - TAKE HIM

One of THE BEST professors I've had. He is very interesting, there's no textbook, but articles from Sociology journals. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I loved Best! As long as you go to him for help on the essays you will get 100 on them. Take his advice and then just study the book for the tests. This class ended up being really easy to get an A.

He wrote the book for this class ... (Social Problems) one of the longest, driest books I have ever been forced to read. Overall, a good professor, good topic, speaks clearly, is fun and intelligent. The book leaves something to be desired.

Easy class, no text book, just have to read journal articles before class. You have to go to class to do well, his tests are pretty tricky. He is a very entertaing guy, class was never boring. I reccomend this class.

He's an extremely easy teacher. Just attend every class, do well on easy clicker quizzes, and take good notes. Concepts are easy and interesting. Downside is that there is a clicker question every class. Otherwise, great professor!

Kind of intimidating, not too personable.. Lectures were pretty pointless but if you went to his office hours it actually really helped. Gives a lot of extra credit opprotunities. Worked hard for an A

Best is an interesting character. He is very knowledgeable about the topic, he wrote the book for the class. His exams consist of about 5 mc and two essays, easy if you read the book. The papers are also easy, he gives a lot of freedom.

I loved this class. Dr. Best is so interesting and almost every lecture was amazing. I have to say, I looked forward to Sociology every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am. I like Dr. Best so much I am taking him again in the Spring. No textbook do the reading and take good notes and you'll be fine. TAKE DR. BEST!!!!

with this prof. it could go either way - you hate him or you love him. He's a great guy but his class is kinda hard. There's no textbook just articles to read before every class. His lectures are interesting and his tests are difficult if you don't pay attention and read the articles.

You will need to read the eleven chapters in order to do well in this class. You do not have to attend class to get a decent grade on the exams, but he will have a few multiple choice questions on his lectures in class. His three exams are only 25 points. Make sure you do both papers, and in total with the previous guidelines, you should not worry.

People are harsh. A good professor. Even though attendence isn't mandatory, you won't pass the exam if you don't go. No textbook required, you read articles all found online.It's a nice break from challenging classes because his lectures are random,but interesting. As long as you read and go to class, you will get a B on exams w/barely studying

Best is a pretty good professor and keeps lectures decently interesting. You have to be willing to read to succeed in this class, as there is a clicker question every class bassed on the reading. But if you do the reading the clicker questions are EXTREMELY easy. Tests are tricky but not overly difficult. IF you are willing to work take Best.

Lectures are not very entertaining. This class is hard work. Pay attention during lectures and make sure the reading are completed for the best grade. Also WATCH THE SYLLABUS. I Pass/Failed the class due to his VERY wide range of what he considers to be a C+

Take the course. He is a good professor, he is very smart and actually teaches a good amount. No textbook, only online readings for every class, then a very easy clicker question every class. If you read, and take notes during class the exams are fairly straight forward

This class is pretty interesting, you must attend class because there is a clicker question always. He does not teach out of a textbook yet lectures about things that he finds interesting-suicide,educations, etc. He is pretty strict since it is a big class, but is also helpful. Read the material and take notes and you will be fine on exams.

Best is the worst professor i have had in college so far. He does not put anything online so you have to go to every class and write down every note. He does not give you a textbook cause he makes up the curriculum himself. He assigns articles to read every day. His tests are so hard. i went to every class and read every article Nd still did bad

Best was great. His lectures are super interesting but get ready to listen to him for an hour and a half straight- no one participates you just listen. Read all the assignments and take notes, there are clicker questions for credit every class on the homework. Take lots of in-depth notes in class and you will get an A. I would definitely recommend!

I have the upmost respect for the professor, who really knows what he's talking about given how many books he has written. Lectures are all on capture but you still need to go to class to answer the clicker questions, which are easy and based on the articles assigned. Some are very long but u can skim though them. Tests are easy and straightforward

Do the reading and come to class, easy A. Does clicker questions every day based on readings (no textbook). If you stay awake during his lectures and take notes, you will do well on tests. Easy to predict what his test questions will be on, no final. Class was interesting. Picked a new random topic every day to lecture on (toys, cars, suicide).

One of my favorite classes from freshmen year and it has nothing to do with my major. The only work is reading one article before each class , go to class and you're guaranteed at least a B+. The exams are 70% on his lectures and 30% on the articles, take notes and you'll be fine. The lectures are interesting, so the class is manageable.

He's a sweet guy, and has great examples. But his exams are a bit difficult if you don't study hard!!!

I loved professor Best! His class was straightforward. All I did was take good, detailed notes and read the articles assigned, then I reviewed them a little before an exam and I got an A. The only grades are the four exams and there are clicker questions every class worth 1 point each about the article you had to read. Overall, it was pretty easy.

The class is simple, read an article prior to class, answer one clicker question everyday on the reading (very easy). There are only 4 exams, and they're based on the lectures and readings you do before class. Very easy class, but must take notes on lectures in order to do well during tests.

The class is 100% lectures and reading. However, the reading is VERY easy and VERY light. Generally they're around 3 pages per reading (one or two readings per lecture) and the lectures are generally very fun and easy to follow. All you need to do to pass is read the readings he provides, and listen to the lectures and take notes.

This class was amazing. Best is so funny and very straightforward. The class relies HEAVILY on his book, so it's imperative that you read if you want to pass the 3 quizzes and exams and 2 4-6pg papers. Definitely go to office hours, he wants to help you with your papers. Also lost of extra credit opportunities. Definitely recommend, so informative!

Dr. Best is great. If you go to his class, listen to what he says and do the readings, then there is no reason not to get an A. He tells you how to pass his class on the first day, it's up to you to listen.

lectures are typically super interesting and he's hilarious, but don't even bother asking him for anything. I tried and he was rude. Just skim readings, and make sure you know some take-away points from them so you can answer clicker Q. GO TO CLASS AND LISTEN TO EVERYTHING HE SAYS AND WRITE IT DOWN AND MEMORIZE. if you do that, you'll be golden.

Best is such a sweet professor! Grades are based off 4 exams and Clicker Questions, Most questions on his tests are straightforward from the lectures and the readings. Readings are always less than 25 pages, most are 5 or less. Also, you don't have to buy a book! If I actually went to the class, I could've gotten AT LEAST a B. I recommend Best!

Loved this class. Best is really funny and his lectures are interesting but you need to pay close attention in class and actually do the readings because his tests are solely based on homework and the lectures. Readings can occasionally be long but most are around 5 pages. Highly recommend.

Dr. Best took sociology, a field in no way related to mine, and made it relatable. On the first day of class he said youll notice I didnt request a textbook. Thats because I dont use one. Each lecture was exciting to go to because each class was a random topic such as holidays and he would explain how society developed them into modern day

The only options for points is your daily clicker question asking about the article(s) you read & the exams. The exams are hard, each topic has 7 questions from the lecture & 3 from the readings. If you have to take this class i recommend rewatching UD captures & rereading the articles & pick out the main points you think he will ask questions on.

This class was pretty interesting. Sometimes the readings could be boring and lengthy. When taking notes make sure they are thorough as thats the only source you can have to study. No textbook. Clickers and exams are always straight forward and fair if you pay attention and do the readings. I highly recommend this class and would take again.

What I really liked about him was that we didn't need a textbook (Thank goodness.) It's not your typical Sociology class; he rambles a lot, but he's pretty straight-forward. Come to class, take notes on (I kid you not, everything: PPT and what comes out of his mouth) read, clicker questions, exams. Lecture can get boring, but he's cool.

You must attend lectures and pay attention to pass. write down every word he says and study your notes for exams because there is no textbook. Topics were interesting but sometimes boring. clicker points are easy points to increase your grade so just skim the articles before class.

Joel Best is a super interesting guy; the lectures were always engaging for when the topics are sometimes boring. The only really annoying part of his class was that it was graded solely on the 4 tests, and clicker questions, which don't help as much as you think they will. Nonetheless, a good and interesting class to take.

Professor Best was not what I expected him to be based on these reviews. I was genuinely surprised that he seemed like a GOOD professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you want the clicker points from the assigned readings, you better show up(they add up). Lectures aren't too boring, they're kinda interesting and exams aren't too tough.

Professor Best is very knowledgable and is incredibly fair on grading. Despite what everyone is saying about having to write down his lectures word by word, you really don't need to. I did really well in his class taking minimal notes and just focusing on his lectures and articles. This is an easy class if you put in time and effort.

Hes pretty funny and straightforward, tells you on day 1 exactly how to get an A which for the most part works. However, the class is only graded on 4 exams and some reading questions. The exams are purely memorization and someone of the questions are too specific imo. He is fair tho - he drops questions most people get wrong

If you listen and write down everything he says you will do fine in this class. the clicker questions affect your grade a lot. Sit in the front, he is hard to hear. Before an exam, reread all readings and listen to lis lectures again. exams are hard, but definitely doable. exam questions include random stuff from his lectures take good notes.

He's a good professor if you prefer lectures. He makes the lectures interesting and draws you in with the content, but some days, it could get boring. Also, you have to pay attention to not just the slides, but also what he is saying as well, because a lot of questions on the exams are going to be something he said during the lecture.
