AMAZING TEACHER!!! Always willing to help students, and extremely nice. I loved the course and learned a lot about journalism. He really motivated me to be a better journalist.

So helpful and very knowledgeable. He will help you out with any problem. I would highly reccomend him.
Professor Campbell is very helpful and wants everyone to succeed. However, I should warn you that you can only get an A if you attend all classes and put a lot of work into it. He requires very much (and some of it is busy-work).
Great class. Do your assignments and go to class. Pay attention, and be on time. It's pretty easy to pull an A in there.
Good teacher. He tells you exactly what he expects from you. Your grade will be an exact reflection of the work you put in. He is willing to help any student who comes to him.
Wonderful teacher who is willing to help you in any way he can. He brings a lot of experience into the classroom from the various newspapers he's worked for. If you stay on top of things, an A shouldn't be too hard to pull.
Great teacher. Will help you as much as you will help yourself and more. You will get the grade you work for. Nothing too tricky.
Prof. Campbell is a great guy who is really willing to help his students! This class requires a lot of work, but you get the grade you deserve. If you work hard you will have no problem!
This class was so confusing because of Prof. Campbell. Its not that hard to explain things to students but somehow he always seemed to confuse the majority of the class.
Not a bad teacher but DON'T take lab from him. He will give you a lower grade if you use a word he doesn't like (never say "due to" use "because of"). The assignments are the same for all of the lab instructors so you might as well take it from someone who grades a little easier.
Professor Campbell is very helpful and kind, but a tad disorganized. He rarely sticks to the syllabus. Lab gives you some great practical experience.
He is very helpful, and is willing to meet with students outside of class. Very understanding when it comes to concerns, and lack of news stories. I am horrible at writing, but he has helped incredibly.
I felt like Prof. Campbell really cared about his students, however I felt like his grading was a little harsh and there are bazillions of quizzes.
If you do the work and attend class, you'll do fine. I took lab from him and I left with kind of a mixed feeling about it. You get to know him incredibly well which is nice, but he does grade a lot harder than other TAs which can change your grade for the worse at the end. Great guy, though.
Joel has an interesting way of teaching, he bases alot of his grading off of his personal opinions about the way people should act. His concept of "professionalism" is skewed by his personal feelings as to how college work and behavior should be. He does not take responsibility for his own mistakes and is unforgiving and unapproachable.
Campbell is the worst professor I have ever had. He is unwilling to help his students and punishes them based on his personal opinions. He encourages favoritism and discourages personal expression.
I had a lab from him and I actually really enjoyed it. As long as you ask a lot of questions and have him review your lab assignment he will help you get full points every time. Always always ask for help and always always do what he tells you and you will get a great grade!
Professor Campbell did not care about some of the students' opinions, and if you don't use the words that he likes he would give you a bad grade.
I loved his class! He was very helpful if you had any questions, and I thought he wasn't too hard on grading (especially if you take his night class...) He's really nice and helpful if you go and talk to him. Despite what other students said about him on here, I'd definitely recommend his class.
He knows a lot about the topic and has a lot of knowledge to offer. I really enjoyed the class. As long as you pay attention, take good notes, and ask for help, you'll be fine.
He is a very nervous professor...wondering how he ever got into PR. But his class is easy. He gives group quizzes, and the tests are pretty easy.
a little disorganized and hesitant sometimes but he is extremely flexible, willing to help, & interested in the success of his students! he devotes his teaching to help students apply principles to real life & asks for student opinion on the helpfulness of assignments. willing to extend duedates. practically did all my research for 1 of myprojects!
Very nice teacher. He legitimately cares about students and about the material.
In found the class pretty interesting and useful. There are a lot of little assignments required but they are pretty easy and interesting. Campbell is a cool guy, easy to talk to, and always willing to help.
Class was pretty disorganized. He is willing to help, but they just try to cover too much material. He just seemed flustered half of the time as he taught.
Good guy but very boring. Lectures consist of reading word for word powerpoint slides. The only reason to go is to take the quiz. Weekly New York Time quiz is random an unpradictable.
I found this class completely useless, which is frustrating because it's required. I didn't do hardly any reading, and still managed an A. You basically just have to DO the assignments and it's fine. Hard to come to class, but Campbell is a nice guy who's willing to help out.
I enjoyed myself.
He's very disorganized and hard to follow. You spend half the time on each assignment just trying to figure out what he wants. The class itself is also very boring, but unfortunately is required for journalism majors.
Pretty easy class as long as you go to lectures, do the quizzes, and to the labs. You learn a lot of stuff as well. Overall good class.
We had weekly NYTimes quizzes, and they were really hard. It's usually about random news, and you end up having to read the WHOLE newspaper, every day. He is very disorganized, but has some good material for the class. His classes and homeworks were usually confusing. I ended up withdrawing the class, which turned out to be a great decision.
He is super helpful and nice, very caring when you have concerns or questions. There are lots of assignments but they are all done in class. I never had any outside writing to do, only to read front page of NYTimes on weekdays. A manageable class
Awesome teacher. Gives out lots of extra credit. grades high on all the assignments. If you do all quizzes and lab each week, you will get an A. You can talk to him after the semester and he will give you a higher grade if needed. I enjoyed his class!
I took Campbell for several classes, and he's a great guy who is caring and just sincere. BUT, with that said, this guy is so disorganized that if you don't hold his hand while he's grading he'll lose your stuff and give you a bad grade, even if he admits you were in class and got A's on all the homework (he just can't FIND it.) Pretty annoying.
He's a really nice guy,and it's a super easy class, but hes very disorganized and spastic. I think it really depends on your TA and how much they know the material.
Nice guy, but he cancelled class more than we had class. Normally, I would see that as a perk, but I don't feel like I learned much at all.
He was my favorite!!! An easy A and, heck, I didn't even read all the readings! All you have to do really for this class is keep updated with the current events and to make sure you write your blog posts on time. Easy.
Hard to contact, and doesn't seem like he wants to be helpful.
Great teacher, it's really easy to get an A in this class if you pay attention and do your work. He's very unorganized and cluttered. The syllabus is basically a guideline. He won't stick to it at all. If you want organization, this may not be the class to find it, but you will get stuff done.
Prof. Campbell is a very nice guy. He may be unorganized at times, but he never lost my assignments or anything like that. He likes to discuss stuff in class, and he goes with what the class wants to do. Quizzes and weekly blog posts are easy. Not a difficult class at all. Just attend and keep up with the reading and you'll do great.
He's super unorganized. We were required to meet with him weekly but he was never around at the times he said he would be available. The one good thing is that he would usually let you make up points you missed but the class is graded very unfairly and some people have to work way harder than others. Don't buy the textbooks either.
He is the most disorganized professor I have ever had. The class was easy because of all the extra credit and easy quizzes. However, he hardly ever teaches in class, and when he does he just floats all over the place making taking notes nearly impossible. I spent the first 30 minutes of every lab trying to figure out what the assignment wanted.
So unorganized it's painful. Not a bad guy but I literally don't even know what is coming out of his mouth 80% of the time. ALWAYS DROPS HIS MICROPHONE. There's always computer problems. Literally I feel like he has nothing prepared for class and just wings it half the time. Totally depends on your TA. My TA was the bomb.
Professor Campbell is an awesome guy. He really does care about his students' success and will really do anything for you. He gives you his personal number and email if you have any questions about ANYTHING. He is really passionate about the field of communications and journalism and is a distinguished professional in the fields he teaches in.
I enjoyed this class a lot more than I thought and really learned about how I could improve as a writer. Professor Cambell is always willing to help if you are confused and the TAs are super helpful. The class wasn't incredibly difficult, but I still learned a lot about writing in many different aspects, If you are a comms major, take this class!
Great teacher, very helpful. Learned a lot in the class. Love how deadlines are often in lab - gives it sort of a real life feel. Good class discussions when people choose to participate. Loved the guest speakers. I felt it was a very clear, easy to follow, great beginning comms class.
Prof. Campbell is an excellent teacher who really does care about his students- he is very sweet. He replies to emails promptly and will always help you if you need it. He makes the lectures entertaining by using tons of examples and interacting with the class. The labs were fun too because I loved my TA & lots of extra credit opportunities.
Professor Campbell is one of the better comms professors. All the classes are prepared beforehand. The readings are all online so that saves you money. It is a writing class and i don't like writing, but this was fun. It was work i enjoyed. I would recommend him for any class.
I highly recommend Prof. Campbell! He's a very sweet guy, and always replies to emails and questions promptly. He is an expert in the field of Journalism and has had a lot of experience. Its evident he truly cares about his students' success by the amount of help and extra credit he offers. The course is pretty straight-forward and I learned a lot!
I really enjoyed this class. My writing improved a lot. I liked how him and the TAs had communication. He offers extra credit which is great. He has experience in journalism and I think he is a great teacher. Pay attention in class and go to the labs. You'll be fine.
I enjoyed this class a lot more than I thought I would and learned a lot about myself as a writer. This class was very informative and it was easy to do well if you went to class and did your work. Prof. Campbell is super nice and willing to help you if you are confused about anything. Also, the TAs are the BOMB.
For someone who is a communications professor, he is terrible at communicating. He was not very clear when explaining concepts and I was constantly confused about what he was looking for with assignments. That being said, it is an easy class and the lab instructors are very helpful. Everything I learned in this class was from my TA during labs.
Amazing guy. Super nice and helpful. He is very understanding and patient with his students. I really feel like I understand more about different styles of writing. No textbook required.
Professor Campbell is more than willing to work with students and help you on work. If you turn in everything and put in some effort, Campbell rewards you well. He makes the class personal and wants students feedback. He is also a very good guy, he wants to his students to do well and do their best to get into the program.
If you can, take 321 from Campbell during the spring or summer semester. Not nearly as intense. Campbell is a chill teacher and you should be able to get an A. If you have problems with your grades, go talk to him and he'll work with you. Never used the textbook. Save your $. Wasn't looking forward to this class, Campbell made it alright.
Hands down the worst professor I have had at BYU. I made an A in the class, no thanks to him. He makes up assignments not outlined on the syllabus and is unhelpful. If you ask for help prepare to be talked to with disrespect. If you can take it from someone else.
I took this as an advertising-emphasis student. Sometimes Campbell was difficult to understand or hear, and he repeated himself a lot andor completely forgot to mention certain critical information. Nothing special about his teaching style. Check out the #comms239 Twitter hashtag, he encourages students to use it in class (but no other sites!).
Prof. Campbell is a funny guy, sometimes hard to follow along but overall he's great. His class has a lot of assignments but every single one is an easy A. He's super nice and really helpful, plus there are only two big tests.
I loved this class and actually learned a lot! He keeps the class interesting and is always willing to meet with you and give advice. Definitely would take again.
He's a nice guy, but I felt like the class was a waste of my time and we didn't learn anything we were supposed to for the tests, plus they were very badly wondered. You have to read the almost the entire NYT everyday plus additional reading. I felt like I spent way too much time for this class. Also his grading seems pretty erratic.
Professor Campbell is really passionate about Journalism. He is not great at teaching writing techniques for journalists, or any writing techniques for that matter. However, if I could give this class a 6 on easiness, I would. I got over 100% in the class with no trouble at all. Plus his tangents and rants in class were pretty entertaining.
Easy A if you do the extra credit. That being said, Campbell is without a doubt the worst professor I've had at BYU. Tests were full of grammatical errors and ambiguous questions, lectures lacked direction, and it was unquestionably the most poorly organized class I've ever taken. It felt like Campbell would just wing it when he walked in the door.
Campbell is a very well-meaning professor & is very open to meet with students during his office hours. He is incredibly enthusiastic about journalism, freedom of information, etc. However, the textbooks are pointless to buy & the class lectures were not very helpful. Attend class, turn in your work, & you'll get an A.
Loved Professor Campbell, loved this class. I have no idea why anyone is complaining about him, he is awesome. I learned a lot, and hopefully I can get in another class with him sometime.
This class was not difficult or anything but I came out feeling like I learned hardly anything from the class. The material wasn't enlightening or very applicable to the work of journalism. Professor Campbell is probably the worst professor I have had a BYU. He is unorganized and inconsiderate to student's questions. He just wasn't consistent.
Campbell's usually an easy A, but oh man are his classes frustrating. Before he gets to class everybody just complains about how lost they are. He was the most confusing teacher i had at BYU hands down and i had to take him for like 4 classes. Trust me on this guys, the less Campbell has to do with your comms education the simpler your life will be
Campbell has a hard time providing clarity for students or even getting grades submitted on time. I took 321 with him and I feel the experience was worse for the wear. He is often well meaning, but tends to actually make the classes harder than they have to be by adding to the confusion. If you can, avoid this professor.
I'm not complaining because this class was an easy A. Just do your work and you will pass. I think the reason he's so scatter brained is because he's busy with helping the school newspaper; he has a job other than teaching and I respect that.
Professor Campbell is honestly such a kind man, he will give you extended deadlines if you need it. He is there to help you succeed, which is so great to have in a professor. He gives you TONS of opportunity's to get extra credit, and his assignments are not that difficult.
I understand that some people argue that Professor Campbell works for the newspaper and that is why he is scatterbrained. However, BEWARE. If you hate disorganization as much as I do, do not take classes from him. It is an easy A, but you will be stressed about constantly changing dealines and confusing answers on things. It is a hot mess.
He is my favorite professor. He has a lot on his plate but always finds time to help you and answer questions. The class is not hard. His goal is to get you a job in the field and he has contacts all over the country. Don't let other comments discourage you from taking his class.
Probably the most disorganized professor I've ever had. Assignments and deadlines are unclear.
Make up work and extra credit is in FULL abundance in this class. Study for quizzes, not hard. Do the write ups, not hard. write decent papers, not hard. This class is not an easy A necessarily but you would have to try to not get an A.
He is a sweetheart. And he throws out extra credit like a sweet elderly woman on when her grandchildren come over. If you have to take this class, take it from him. You'll be amazed at how easy it is.
I took this class because I thought I wanted to go into News Media. By the end of the semester I decided that I didn't want to but I still felt like I respected the subject. Easy to get an A but sometimes the work felt like there was no actual meaning behind it. This guy really wants to try to be better but sometimes he's disorganized.
Professor Campbell is awesome! He's very passionate about the subject and wants to make it easy for his students to learn and succeed. He can get a little disorganized and "all over the place." That worked fine for me, but I could see how students more organized or structured than me might get frustrated.
If you are into journalism, he is a solid choice. He gave me a realistic inside look of what it is like to work in the news industry.
I love Professor Campbell! You can tell that he really cares about his students and the subject he teaches. He also offers A LOT of extra credit opportunities, which is super helpful!
This class is very interesting and I enjoyed my time.
Professor Campbell is very knowledgeable and very humble. He offers tons of extra credit opportunities and really wants all of his students to succeed and to end up studying Journalism. He's caring and funny and one of the best and by far the easiest professor I've ever had in my college career. The few writing assignments help a lot! Def take it!
Prof. Campbell is a nice guy. Even though 95% is an A, there is so much extra credit offered that it's not too difficult to get an A. However, there were tons of assignments and things were hard to keep track of. We used Slack this semester and it did not work well, he is likely planning on going back to Learning Suite in the future.
If you fall short on the many assignments in this class, Joel is quick to give you opportunities to make it up.
I experienced some health challenges and professor campbell was quick to work with me to help me stay on top of the class and prepared for success in the future. Seriously appreciate him so much!! Provides tons of optional field trip opportunities and hands on learning opportunities!
Should be easy if you stay on top of class work.
I really liked him. I might have been the problem child the first half of the semester (I joined the class late and didn't get the textbook till even later), but he worked with me one on one to get me back on track. Really cares about his students, wants us to pass, and is passionate about journalism. You won't regret taking the class.
I love Professor Campbell's class. I hope you can have him as your professor in the the future, and I want him as mine. Brother Campbell is very personal and he loves you, but not as much as he loves journalism. He is willing to adjust to your schedule and wants nothing but the best. Professor Campbell wants you to succeed. His door is always open
Great class for learning about journalism. Professor Campbell is energetic and very knowledgeable about journalism.
Prof. Campbell is a solid pick for a teacher. He is very enthusiastic about news and wants his students to learn and grow. It can be a bit difficult to keep track of assignments but there is a lot of extra credit. Would recommend.
I'm grateful to have taken the class from someone who has been in a Newsroom and understands a lot of stuff that are not found in a textbook. A lot of learning and writing which is vital in Communications. He's not just a teacher in class but an inspiration especially when you feel all is not well. Thank Prof.
Joel Campbell is a great Professor who really cares about the students learning the material and not so much about the grades. I liked the assignments, they were not that difficult and I really learned the writing style. One thing I'd say is that nothing is really set in stone with this class; he tends to change, add, or get ride of stuff.
Though he is a little disorganized and sometimes it was unclear as to due dates, Campbell is very understanding and willing to work with any student. The class was a very easy A, with lots of extra credit opportunities. Campbell is easy to get a hold of and very willing to give feedback and help.
He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed! Some assignments are done in class while others require outside interviews/ effort. The workload was a bit fast-paced for the Spring semester, time management is a must. The schedule can at sometimes be confusing, but he clarifies things if you simply ask! Great professor overall!
Professor Campbell is the nicest guy. He allows you to learn mainly through real world experience, which is awesome for this field! The readings aren't bad, and the quizzes are open book. He offers a lot of extra credit opportunities, which makes it impossible to fail. Would HIGHLY recommend this class from him!
Professor Campbell is such a great professor and cares for his students and their success. He is available through text to answer questions which was so helpful. Easy A...
He works hard to help you learn a lot in class. If you do your work and come to class you can get a good grade.
He is really understanding and does everything he can to help you if your confused. The problem is you can be confused a lot. He is sometimes a bit absentminded but he is super fair, and while he expects you to put in effort he is a very generous grader. Good professor!
Professor Campbell made sure every student knew what was going on and that nobody got left behind. Sometimes he was a little scatter brained and would jump around to a lot of different topics while teaching, but he made it fun and cared about the success of his students.
He had a lot of assignments that were fun and gave us plenty of time to do them. He was really specific and nice with feedback and cared about the success of his students.
Professor Campbell is caring and intelligent. He expresses real genuine interest in his students success. He always makes an effort to enhance learning with experiences outside of the classroom. My one critique would be sometimes he is a little too willing to give out extra credit. He is a very accomplished individual- ask about his achievements.
Great Professor. Knows what he is talking about. Doesn't believe in grades, but in improving your writing.
Prof. Campbell was such a great professor. Even though this class was just 1.5 credits, it taught me so much more. He goes out of his way to provide unique opportunities for students and help us understand the news media world better. Take his class, you won't regret it!
Campbell seemed disorganized, but eventually, we understood his way of doing things. He's knowledgeable & is willing to work with students by changing due dates, removing some assignments & altering them to help us get them done. Labs/quizzes every class. He went over assignments due every week to help keep us on track. Extra credit available.
Professor Campbell was great! He was willing to help out and would adjust his syllabus to fit the classes needs. You could definitely tell he wanted the best for his students because he made himself available and was constantly communicating with us through email.
He is a great professor but is not always very clear when it comes to assignments. He is very willing to help and is very easily accessible over email. There were a lot of papers and assignments but they were not very difficult, and if they were he was ready to help. This is a great class and I learned a lot.
He is a fun teacher. I'm taking a class from him again in the coming fall semester. The homework was interesting and very interactive. He is very excited about the news field which makes his lectures interesting. If you show up and do the work like he asks you'll get an A because he wants everyone to succeed. There's no trickery in the grading.
Professor Campbell is a decent professor. He's a bit unorganized, though.
Professor Campbell is a caring professor who cares about his students! His classes are enjoyable and not difficult!
Bro Campbell is the sweetest man! Make friends with him, as he knows literally everyone and can score you some great connections! There are a ton of fun activities in this class that prepare you for journalism. He's a bit disorganized, but will almost always reopen something for you if you missed it. Even if you aren't going to study NM take this!
Professor Campbell is one of the sweetest professors you will ever meet. He is so passionate about journalism and his students and takes pride in their work. The quizzes he gives are really simple and if you do all the assignments he gives, there is not way you won't get an A. He gives a lot of extra-credit and is super understanding!!
Professor Campbell is the best! He can be a bit unorganized, but he is super nice and gives lots of extra credit. He really cares about journalism and he's a really good teacher. I'm planning to take as many classes from him as possible!
I felt like I was doing a lot of work in this class, but walked into the final with 100% in the class. Expectations can be wildly confusing for the first two weeks, but he is a lenient grader. Attendance in class is important, as each week's discussion board is a summary of your 20 minute discussion with a breakout group. Big grades were easy.
His classes aren't necessarily super difficult, but for the sake of your own sanity, avoid him. He is easily the most frustrating professor I've had at BYU. I was about ready to drive my head through a wall daily with his constant unprofessional, disorganized, fussy, confusing teaching style. He's a good guy, just an absolutely awful professor.
Extremely disorganized, but a lenient grader. He allows make-up work and revisions, which is especially nice considering due dates are changed at random, and assignments are added in or dropped whenever. The final research guide (just a compilation of notes) is worth more points than the big semester-long research project, which is kind of funky.
Joel is a knowledgable, understanding teacher & taught me a ton about the history and practice of journalism. He's not very organized on LS, but he sent out emails each week detailing upcoming assignments and explaining what to do, and he was always available after class or on Zoom to talk. Stay on top of things and you'll learn a lot and do great!
Easy A, he'll do all he can to help you.The issue was that he didn't teach much. Most of our class periods were full of political debate. All the value in this class is in the handouts that explain different theories to judge ethicality. Felt more like a forum for political agenda than a college-level class.
Joel was so great to work with you and help you succeed. He provides time to apply ethical methods and theories through group discussions and personal homework assignments. Joel really helped us see how important it was to consider these things in the field of communication. I really appreciated and will use what I have learned in this class.
Professor Campbell is very nice and really works with his students. The assignments aren't hard, and he lets you turn stuff in late and still get full credit. Only downside is he is very disorganized.
Professor Campbell's course is easy but a lot of busy work at times. I was not a favorite of his teaching style and class, but the course was easy. Professor Campbell is a nice man and listened to the students which I appreciate. Sometimes his lectures felt like just announcements but it is easy to get an A
Prof. Campbell is super experienced, genuinely caring, and a spiritual powerhouse. His work with interfaith communities is amazing, ask him about it! While the class was a bit disorganized and confusing at times, he ensured that it was reasonable for his students and was incredibly receptive to feedback... even from rude students. Joel = the best!
Some people might think he is not organized, but he is. He's just a bit eccentric, and that honestly made him awesome. He was a great teacher. I did feel bad for him when students would talk over him because, at least in my Ethics class, they would a lot. I later spoke to some of those students to find out they were doing it to be hurtful.
He's a great professor who knows a lot about journalism because of his past career. As long as you do your assignments and show up to class, you'll get an A. The tests are easy as long as you've participated inside and outside of class. I would definitely take a class from him again!
He is a super engaging professor. You could tell he truly cares about what he is teaching and wants to help in any way. His assignments were not super hard and his grading was fairly easy. If you show up and do the assignments, you will make a great grade.
Pro. Campbell is so great! His teaching may be a little disorganized but once you get the hang of what is due it is really easy to follow. He is very accommodating and really tries to make class less stressful for his students. He is so helpful both in and out of class! He is the nicest human and I loved this class!
Joel is a great professor. He knows his stuff and is excited to teach us about it. He is also ready to help us succeed. I feel better prepared to move ahead because of him.
Very student-focused professor who shows that he cares about students. The course can be difficult to navigate, but the professor does his best to help students succeed.
Joel is the best. This class is not super tough to begin with, but Joel is very willing to help and clear up any miscommunication there may be. He's very kind and always doing what he can to help you as a student & a person. Lots of group assignments and small online readings due once a week, not bad at all. I have all good things to say abt Joel!
Although his course is a bit unorganized, he teaches fundamental skills by allowing the students to make mistakes and grow. Follow the syllabus as much as possible, but he's not a stickler.
I found it ironic that he is a comms professor who was actually not the best at communicating. Very unorganized and confusing with what is due and when. BUT he is really nice, and I overall enjoyed the class a lot. I would've preferred a little more clarity on assignments, but the assignments were not hard. The TA was also very helpful.
He clearly cares about the subject matter. He uses up-to-date material with practical applications. Understanding expectations can be difficult at times, but he will answer all your questions, so if something doesn't make sense just ask.
Professor Campbell is so kind. He really cares about his students.
Joel is a very personable professor who shows that he cares about his students. He was entertaining and provided lots of room for understanding (extensions, clarifications, etc.). You are assigned a group to work with throughout the semester, and while I don't typically enjoy groupwork, I really enjoyed this part of the class. Definitely take this.
he is a great professor! class was super easy to understand and work wasn't crazy heavy! readings after class to talk about with your group the next class! they take about 30-45 mins to complete! overall a great experience! definitely recommend!
Joel is a super nice and caring professor! Super easy to get in contact with, with a nice TA. Does his best to keep class entertaining and help out all students. He is really just a wholesome guy tbh
Joel is a great and I recommend him big time
Professor Joel is the best teacher ive had yet! He is very humble and wants to constantly hear feedback of how to improve his class and as a professor. He gives enough time for assignments and is very accommodating to ensure that we will succeed. His class is fun and entertaining, and you won't regret taking his class!
Great professor! Very kind and reasonable; willing to work with you on deadlines and extensions if needed.
Joel is an extremely kind and understanding professor. His classes are mainly lecture based with many opportunities to participate. I had him for both a lecture series class and also for a smaller class, and it was much preferred the smaller class because I got to know him better. He cares a lot about his students and wants everyone to succeed.
Professor Campbell was the best! Very kind and very helpful. A lot of the grade was based on in-class attendance.
Joel is a sweet professor who is so willing to listen to his students about ways to improve his class. Assignments are not difficult. We had one assignment due each Sunday night, some group presentations, and no textbook needed. Tests were not difficult either.
I have taken 2 classes from Joel and I love him. He is a very genuine person who cares about his students and what he is teaching. The coursework was very manageable and was on a consistent schedule. Be aware that the group you pick at the beginning with you are stuck with all semester. We had two group presentations, a midterm, & final, very easy
Professor Campbell makes this course engaging with his storytelling and experiences. He is willing to help you get the grade you want. Lots of interesting topics explored.
If you are looking for a class where you will learn a lot and have great discussions, take this class. Professor Campbell is really respectful of other religions and has traveled the world to many different religious sites. His class also has a very specific flow so you can get the hang of it after a few weeks.
Overall, this class was good. We had fun field trip opportunities, fully sponsored by the school, which were really fun and educational. Professor Campbell is really passionate about what he teaches, which is incredibly helpful when some of the work can become monotonous or repetitive. I'd take it again!
This class teaches really interesting material that helps you see how religion is related and embedded in so much of the media we take in. Media also tries to build up religious like experiences, which has lead to really interesting intersections between the fields. Overall loved this class. Lots of guest speakers and a really fun field trip.
At the beginning of the semester I was a little confused on the format of the class and nervous about the attendance policy (only could miss 2x) but Professor Campbell so willing to work with you and as the class goes on you pick up the schedule.
Professor Campbell is the sweetest, he really cares to make the lectures informative but also very interesting. He helps a lot in preparation for exams with a study guide, and offers a lot of extra credit opportunity.
This professor cares for his students and will help if you can communicate with him. He teaches through lectures and other reading materials. There is no textbook, but participation is huge, so your grade will be good if you attend class. He has a midterm and a final; however, he offers extra credit if you want to improve your grade.
Joel was a great professor! Attendance is a grade and you have to submit your notes after each class. The grades are mostly made up of group projects and current event reading reflections. He was such a nice professor and takes late assignments if you explain what's going on. He made the class super engaging and fun!
Joel is super nice and a good professor, you do work a lot in groups, but it's not bad. He helps you stay engaged in the class and helps you implement your major through though different class questions. Please don't miss out on taking this class.
Joel Campbell is just a good guy. I would take any class from him.
Professor Campbell is very caring and easy to work with. He will help work around any concerns that you have and will help you to succeed.
Professor Campbell is so nice and works with you with whatever you need! I would recommend.
Professor Campbell has easily been one of my favorite professors. You can tell he really cares for his students, and always gives a lot of information about the comms majors. The class itself was pretty easy, as long as you participated with your group and read directions. Definitely would recommend him for any of the classes he teaches!
One of the BEST professors I have ever had. Professor Campbell was always willing to help and made sure we all understood what was required and how he could help. He is understanding, caring, respectful and fun! I will definitely take more classes from him where possible.
I love this teacher! The word to describe him is tender. Super kind and wants the best for you. Can be a little confusing at times but ask your questions and you will be totally fine! Take him he is awesome and not too hard.
Great guy and is super flexible with circumstances
I loved Professor Campbell's class, he was very patient and nows so much about the industry.
Prof Campbell is a great teacher, very kind and helpful, class is fun.
Very respectful teacher! We worked with groups and discussed content regularly, which was great! Lectures got a bit monotonous, but the content is always interesting.
He is a very understanding, kind teacher. There are reading assignments due almost every class (2/week), but they are totally manageable and the textbook is online and free. Very basic, foundational information taught in class.
If you get chance to take a class from Professor Campbell, do it! He's definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is so kind and caring and really wants you to do well, not just with the class but also with your career. He always answers any questions you have in class and outside, every assignment is meaningful. A great professor!!
He gives off sweet grandpa vibes haha. As long as you show up consistently you should ace the class. I loved the group projects; the lectures were kind of boring. I ended up going on a field trip and we went to a Catholic mass, Calvary Baptist service, and a Swahili branch sacrament meeting, and that was the highlight of the class
Professor Campbell is very kind and understanding. Class was a little boring since it was mostly just lectures with presentation slides. He was a little all over the place in lectures so it was difficult to follow along, but him and the TA were helpful in answering questions. Not a very good listener though and would interrupt sometimes.
Joel's class was amazing! Mainly group projects, presentations, a weekly write up, and in class (short) assignments. 10/10
This class is an easy A if you are able to make it to class but the homework expectations were unclear. He was always available for us outside of class to answer clarifying questions though. My advice is to make sure you can go to class every time. Go even when sick - you need it.
Joel was super wholesome and nice. I was confused some of the time but by mid semester I understood the organization of the class a lot better.
Joel is a very caring professor is willing to work with every one to accommodate their unique circumstances whether it be for attendance or exams. Group project participation is a part of the class but the work is fairly divided and implemented well into the curriculum. The main thing to be aware of is that the class can feel a bit disjointed.
Professor Campbell is such a forgiving professor and always cares about his students. There is a multiple-choice midterm and a final project.
Professor Campbell is very kind to his students. He always helps when asked. The lectures are a lot of student presentations but those are easy.
Joel is such a caring professor who is passionate about what he teaches. He is always willing to help you do your best and to learn.
Professor Campbell is a very fair and also very understanding. He is always willing to accommodate. The course was fairly straight forward. As long as you do the work you should be able to get an A.
Joel Campbell is a great professor. Lots of work and extra credit throughout the semester. He genuinely wants you to succeed, and will help you out whenever you ask. Would take again.
He's a nice guy and it's a good class that covers a ton of difficult topics. Definitely would recommend taking it if your interested in global phenomenon and how they spread.
Professor Campbell is the sweetest professor. He is so precious and cares about his students. 10/10 would take him again :)
Professor Campbell is pretty good! He is super kind so thats great. The class is very group heavy so if you aren't into that then this isn't for you. There is only one exam (exactly from the study guide) and there are one page double spaced responses to the chapter readings every class.
He is wanting students to succeed, if you have a problem, talk to him about it he is extremely accommodating
Great professor!
Prof. Campbell is an engaging lecturer. His passion for the subject is clear and makes me more excited to learn and understand. The class topics are super interesting, we talk about everything related to media and religion-like experiences, from Hinduism and Christianity to the Super Bowl and Taylor Swift. I highly recommend this class!
Professor Campbell is a genuine caring man and fun to learn from! Overall, the class opened my mind to lots of new ideas. I loved all the extra credit and experiential learning opportunities! I was intimidated at the beginning of the semester when I saw all the assignments but it is always consistent and easy to stay on top of. Attendance is key!
I have had Professor Campbell for two classes now and enjoyed both of them! He always comes to class with great energy and teaches with enthusiasm. I always come away from his classes having learned new things. Sometimes things in class can get a little confusing or disorganized, but he is very understanding and forgiving so it wasn't a big deal.
Great professor, really interesting class. Joel is really knowledgeable. As long as you do the reading and take your class notes you're pretty much good to go. The field trips to different sacred spaces are really cool!
Professor Campbell is one of the coolest professors at BYU. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. One of the coolest things in this class is you get to go to different religious sites and learn more about other faiths.
I love Joel! I feel like he really cares and gives you lots of opportunities to do well, whether through extra credit, or giving you help. There is a reading before each class that you need to write a reflection on, but it isn't too intense. His tests are taken from the questions that you write in the reflection, and they are just online.
Joel is great. The first week of class might seem a little crazy, but once you get in the groove it's pretty easy to follow. I have taken multiple classes from him and they all have been good. I liked the assignments in this class because it helped me learn a lot about different religions and have real world experiences.
Great Professor, he really cares for his students and gives so many extra credit opportunities to be successful. Only one midterm and a final and it was open note. If you go to class and turn in your assignments you will be successful. Lectures were engaging and fun topics.
Joel is the BEST. His class is easy, and you learn SO MUCH! As long as you do the pre-class assignments and participation assignments, you will be good! The tests are easy and Joel is so understanding, and will make sure you succeed. There are a ton of extra credit opportunities, and Joel responds super fast to messages if you ever have questions.
Professor Campbell is so kind and understanding and truly respects every individual. He is so well educated and versed in communications that he knows what he is doing. Everything he assigns is not hard, but will help you learn and retain the information. I have taken multiple classes from him and this is him every class. Take his classes!
Joel is a fantastic professor who truly cares about his students. His classes are engaging, with interesting field trips and manageable workload. I found unstuck ai super helpful for study prep, along with the textbook and in-class discussions.
One of the best professors I have ever had!
Great guy! I appreciated his fascination with the class topic and his willingness to help and answer any questions or concerns we had. If you communicate with him and show up, there's no reason you wouldn't get an A.
Loved taking this class from Joel! It was so educational and really helped me to see the world around me in a new way. The readings were engaging and not too long. Highly recommend.
Great class! It's definitely a decent amount of homework, but none of it is too hard, and he's a fair grader. Professor Campbell is super helpful and understanding if you need more time, which I appreciate. He's retiring after winter 2025, so if you need to take this class, take it from him!
LOVED this class. I'm a COMMS minor so I wanted a class that would be beneficial to me outside of just academics/career and this was incredible! Very manageable workload. Best part was the (optional) field trip so don't miss that! Class sometimes gets off topic and aren't incredibly organized, but I honestly found it fun- good discussions. Take it!
Loved this class! You can tell he cares a lot about the topic and is always more than happy to help you with anything you need. Very approachable and understanding professor.
I liked this class a lot. I thought it could do without having to each give 3(!) group presentations on random subjects and would've loved to actually have more time for lectures. It's interesting stuff but class is mainly just student group presentations. Joel is a really nice guy and is passionate about what he teaches so I wanted more of it!
Great class! I particularly loved learning about holy envy and visiting other churches. I wish the text book was more objective about different religions instead of being an "LDS guide to other religions." It just felt a little biased and I felt we could've learned more. Professor was very nice and you could tell he loves what he teaches.
Professor Campbell is amazing! His TA Nora was awful.
