Highly recommended; this class really changed my life. He's really fun and his tests are ridiculously easy if you study. The class is more like hanging out with friends than going to school. Tip: read the book even if he doesn't say to.

he is an awesome prof. i had him 2 yrs ago. then i quit school. i'm going back in the fall, and i had no doubt in my mind to pick mr. castellaw for my comm class! the class is fun! tests are suuuper easy! and when you give your speeches he really listens to you, sympathizing with you in every way. take this class!!!!!!!!!!

I thought this class was great. The lecture notes were clear, and the study guide saved me a ton of time. Mr Castellaw is very supportive about being nervous about speeches. He creates an easy-going class environment.

I took him for summer and he was so awesome! Notes were clear, study guides helpful, 2 easy presentations (not done in groups), 7 easy homeowrk assignments and lots of in class groups. The entire class was so interesting. I was so nervous about taking this class, but it was easy and fun. I highly suggest him, espeically for a 4 week sum. session.

Probably the most clear and concise teacher I've had. Very well organized, knows what he's talking about. When you ask a question and if he doesn't know the answer, he'll tell you that he doesn't know of any research on that, rather than making up an answer, I respect that. Genuinely nice guy.

He's a great teacher. pay attention to his lecture and take notes and you'll pretty good in his class. very concise and well organized! he's honest to tell u if he doesnt know the answer and search it up. wish he taught other classes! HE IS FABULOUS!

This class is seriously awesome. I took him in summer, I did pretty well in the beginning,but I messed up on a test of his. I was still able to recover by all the extra credit he provides his students! I got an A eventually. Hes pretty cool, kinda odd with the hand motions, but pretty cool, hes nice, helpful, and fun. I reccomend him to all of you.

Joel was one of the best teachers I have had at grossmont. His tests are directly from the book and notes. He gave us 10min of open note and book 30min into tests. presentations are much to be desired but dueable. beware....turn in h.w.!! recommend this teacher 100%!

Joel is an amazing teacher, I have him for a Friday morning class and he is like a breath of fresh air. Lectures are informative and interesting. He doesnt assign a ton of homework, tests are mostly multiple choice and he lets you use book/notes for 10 mins. Extra credit is available during the semester.I highly reccommed him.

Great guy. I had a really rough semester with a huge break up, 2 deaths in the family, and my wisdom teeth being pulled and he totally worked with me to make sure I was on top of things. Glass is half full kind of guy. If you make and effort he will too, wonderful man, great professor, amazing story teller, takes a genuine interest in his students.

This is one of the best college professors I've had. You can tell he trully loves what he does and wants each and every one of his students to really learn. Gets you totally in tune with world events and makes you feel like you really do matter, unlike some other prof. Most definetly suggest him, he's awesome!

He is a nice guy, very clear, the class is fun and he is a very positive guy. He was a little rude this past semester sometimes though. Kind of sassy but I guess it was to people who did things to annoy him.

I was so afraid to take argumentation, but he really makes you feel comfortable and enjoy the class. He's very laid back and an extremely generous grader. The assignments may seem lengthy, but aren't too hard. The final debates also seemed very daunting, but you get a partner to work with and you get through it. I recommend Joel Castellaw!

Thi proffesor is good, but his tests are hard. Do not take him if you need an A. His test will screw you up.

This professor is very helpful and an extremely kind man. Although he doesn't remind you all the time, reading is a big part of the tests. The tests aren't that hard if you have been paying attention to his lectures. Always willing to explain instructions until everyone is absolutely clear. Overall, awesome proffesor.

Excellent class. You get a good grounding in making arguments Toulmin style. The highlight of the class is a parliamentary debate on issues of your choosing. Don't buy the workbook; the text is all you need.

Professor Castellaw is by far, my most favorite teacher I've ever had (including high school). He has a genuine care for his students, he is forth right, attentive, inspirational. Assignments aren't always easy, but this is college guys! The class was fun, especially if you have an opinion on things. I'm going to acutally miss this class :(.

If you're really shy, dont worry. He really helps you with the nerves and anxiety. he really cares and wants to help every student achieve their best. He's still quite a tough grader, so read the textbook, ATTEND, pay attention, and just let the nerves go!! :)

Castellaw does a decent job teaching argumentation. Class is overly structured & this prevents free flowing class discussions or debates between students. Castellaw puts too much restriction on his opinions. The class is easy overall & seems to be disappointingly basic.

I took this class as one of those half a semester classes. I was terrified! I seriously did not think I could go through with it! I am so afraid of speaking in public. This class changed everything! I am so much more comfortable now and I actually look forward to giving speeches :) of course I still get crazy nervous, but I'm more confident now :)

Took public speaking during summer school. He is a very nice teacher that wants to help his students to do the best they can, his work was fairly easy, gives out extra credit, and I really enjoyed his class. Very relevant and useful skills out of both classes. His first class is what made me want to be a comm major. Not tough classes at all, it's easy to pay attention, just do your work.

Don't know why "easiness" is desirable on RMProf - I'm giving him a 5 because he makes everything clear. Not easy, but pay attention and put forth effort and you're good. My favorite professor in any of the three colleges I have attended. Passes out a sheet outlining semester and follows it. 137 is a group class that will take extra time.

great teacher i would highly recommend him! His test are not too hard and he gives you ten minutes to look at your book and notes during the test if needed. Also his final exam is just like the rest of the tests that were given so it was easy. He really cares about teaching and wants you to learn in his class.

Professor Castellaw has this amazing ability to remain neutral, listen to a debate and brilliantly summarize both sides for clarification. He gives every student feedback when he grades assignments. You'll know he took the time to read what you have written. His thoughts and insight made me really want to work hard. He is supportive, inspiring.

Joel is a bit eccentric, but he is absolutely fantastic at his job. Has a desire to see his students succeed. Challenges students to view things from a different perspective. I can honestly say I learned a lot from him. Makes very clear what the standards are. Overall, it is a pretty fun class. I highly recommend him to all Communication majors.

LOVED this class. Pretty chill teacher. Only a few papers throughout the semester. You track your own grade but he always give good feedback. Very clear instructor. The topics are all chosen by the students. Don't use the textbook often. Tests are half open note, 20 min into exam you can use notes for 10 min. Papers are strictly formatted for easy.

Very clear in what he expects in the class and on speeches. 4 speeches, 3 exams, and most importantly, he made the class very enjoyable and neutralized the amount of fear that many have in Public Speaking. Take this class by him for a laid back, but very instructional course!

Professor Joel is a great teacher. This class is easy and fun. It gets you out of your comfort zone but you soon learn so much about your classmates that they feel like friends and family. There are 6 speeches but the first 3 are so easy. He gives a lot of extra credit. You can use your book/ notes for the test.

Overall hes a pretty good teacher. As long as you show up consistently, youll be fine. The tests are straight forward and he gives you a clear study guide that he test will cover. Overall I liked the class and I would take another one of his classes if possible.

Professor Castellaw course is a very straight forward class to take. When it comes to test have in mind that studying is a must be and homework too because both can affect your grade. Very chill professor, must importantly very understandable when it's needed. Participation is needed because is part of the grade.

This class is amazing! If you have to take a Comm122 please take it with this prof. All you need to do for a guaranteed A in your class is to follow the rubric for all of the speeches--honestly, it's not hard. Other than that, the class is exam heavy so buy the book--but tbh, the test are not bad and his study guides have all you need to study for.

Take him. He loves what he does and he shows it through the way he teaches. Genuine professor who gives the opportunity for an A if you follow the path of requirements laid out on the syllabus.

Professor Castellaw is an AMAZING professor! He gives clear directions and examples of what is needed for your assignments. That being said attendance is mandatory!! His lectures are very informative and he provides TONS of feedback. He welcomes drafts, so if you aren't sure send him your drafts and his feedback will guarantee you and A.

very engaging lectures that aren't just "read alongs". work load is reasonable. not overwhelming. not a completely easy A, but if you can be on top of the few assignments he does assign throughout the semester + a 1 week grace period post due date; then you'll walk out of the class with a B+ minimum. show up and engage and youll be fine.

Really awesome teacher, was very understanding of my situation and is not very harsh/strict with grading or attendance, and will always try to help you if you are behind. I'm really glad that he allows us to do speeches on whatever we want, allowing us to be creative instead of mindlessly following a textbook.

I hold a lot of respect for Castellaw, he does a great job with leading students in the right direction. His feedback on speeches are useful but not demeaning, and he is very accommodating for students who cannot do their speech or test on time. The textbook is free, and he creates a great atmosphere for students. Tests do require sheets though.

Professor Castellaw is great. While I've done some public speaking before, he creates an environment where anyone can step up to the front of the room and give a good speech. He also gives great feedback and the textbook was free and online. He is very clear about what the speeches can be and offers lots of help and advice.

Joel is one of the best professors/mentors I've encountered at Grossmont. I took his argumentation and advanced PS. Amazing lectures and really good class conversations. His feedback is clear as well as grading criteria and rubric. He's not a tough grader as long as you meet criteria. He's also just a really nice, understanding, wise person!
