if you can get over the monotone voice, a great prof!
Exam questions are fun, but often recycled from old exams
Almost too laid back, wears jeans and boots. Students who don't study fail, those with old exams ace the course. He'll answer any question, and will appreciate that you care to actually learn. The genetics lecture is boring, but the lab wasn't bad.
This guy is great! He really cares about teaching and it shows in his ease of lecturing. He does however speak in a rather monotone voice which can sometimes put you to sleep if you dont have a coffee with class. I learned a lot from this guy!!
He really tries to teach you to learn. He is not interested in making students learn info to test well, but rather learn info to understand it. Great professor!
good teacher.
Decent professor, monotone voice. I struggled in 352 because of the material, but Chandlee was always in his office during hours. In 491/2, he let me do my own thing, which was nice cause no one was hovering over my shoulder, but when I needed help it took a while to track him down.
not a very good teacher very unclear, problem set are to hard
nice professor, but what he goes over in class usually has nothing to do with what's on this test. problem sets are very hard good luck tryng to get thru of this class.
TERRIBLE!!! I am very fair and optomistic but this guy absolutely kills me. I'm going out of my way to take genetics at CCRI because I can't handle this man. SO DRAB, SO BORING, and then expects that you know genetics before you even take the class! Don't take it as a senior if you want to graduate.
I think he's alot like most of the professor at the University of Rhode Island. he doesn't care about the students.he would be happy with failing the class as a whole, making you retake this class two or three times wasting your time. their are no genetic's majors here so why make this class so vague and hard? take this class at ccri genetic 2090
I not a fan of the way he teaches, genetics can be fun just not with him teaching. Do not take with any other hard courses you will need time to study alot. Now I heard he's going to be teaching BioChm 311, Thank god I finished it over the summer that class stunk too.
i seriously went to class once every 3 weeks and thought i died of boredom every single time. Most of the concepts are similar, tests are hard but not unbearable. gives moderate extra credit. is dry and dull during lectures. lets you submit homework over internet so really no need to ever go to class
bring your pillow to class
Beware the class. It was taught colloquium style with him as coordinator- DON'T DO IT. He was one of the better teachers, which is saying a lot. Don't trust his study guides- just know the book. Get old tests of his, and... pray.
Taught the class along with two other professors and a grad student. None of them know what the others are doing. No coordination at all. The homework and exams are all graded by students at the college with NO background in Biochem, so you put something slightly different than their sheet says, you're toast, and no effort to fix the mistake
Probably the best lecturer of the group who taught this class. But that's really not saying much at all.
Not as bad as everyone makes it. Material isn't too difficult and if you need help he's very helpful if you go to his office hours. If you pay attention, study, and put some effort into it an A is obtainable. And the extra credit helps a lot so don't blow it off.
This professor is very kind and very eager to get the students to UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL. He makes himself available for students to see him, and REALLY helps you understand the material if you show him you are eager to learn. Do the work... get a good grade. But, don't be misled-- it's a damn hard course and requires a LOT of work. No doubt.
HARD. HARD. HARD. DON'T TAKE IT UNLESS YOU HAVE TO!
Dr. Chandlee is an obviously very intelligent man who is able to effectively communicate difficult material without oversimplifying. His notes and reading assignments are all that is necessary to do very well on the exams. Also, he makes himself very available to students and gives plenty of extra-credit.
Not easy, but if you do all the reading, do at least some of the problems, take advantage of every extra credit point, and ask questions during office hours, you can get an A.
See Jay Sperry's comments for BCH 311. Besides possessing pretty much the same terrible teaching qualities as Jay Sperry, Chandlee one ups Sperry in the department of showing useless pictures & diagrams on a projector. BCH 311 ruins lives & I can guarantee that. Get ready to suffer & cry if you do take it. Consider yourself warned again!
Genetics is tough to begin with, but it doesn't help when Chandlee is by far one of the most monotone professors around. But the best way to pass this class is to get copies of the old exams and go to recitation because they will give you practice problems that are helpful. Test Bank=A in the class.
Hardest class of my life. you must put work into this. Chandlee is extremely monotoned. what works best is to try your hardest to pay attention and take notes to keep yourself focused. passing biochem is possible. you cant mess around. focus.
Genetics is a hard subject but an important one if your major is biology. I think Chandlee is the best teacher to take it with. This class may be difficult but its fair. Getting an A is not that hard if you put some work into it. I have learned twice as much as i normally would have in any other class at URI
C makes a fascinating subject appear totally boring & unnecessarily difficult. He has no presentation skills whatsoever, either for lack of confidence or out of sheer boredom with teaching. His lack of enthusiasm is infectious, and his classes make me totally disenchanted for a subject with which I am quite fascinated, thanks to outside reading
tough class but great teacher
not a really hard class, but a terrible, terrible, terrible teacher
With a very low class average he does not scale, he is the most monotonous guy on earth, he is not helpful especially for the effort the students put in, he does not in any way return the favor. Very disrespectful in one on one meetings. Avoid this class at all costs; Even if you have to pay the university not to take it... do it.
Really didn't elaborate much on topics covered and if questions were asked, he would get irritated that someone does not know as much Genetics as he. When exams would be returned, I challenged his grading to find out that I was right and he had totally screwed up. Not a good teacher for Genetics and if outside help is available...take it
This class could have been more interesting if it were taught by a rock, however it was taught by an incomprehensible, monotonous, somewhat animate individual who makes students second guess life. Do not hesitate taking an alternative to this class, even if you have sign your soul over. Yes...it's that bad.
After reading the comments below me, I became very intrigued and decided to see if they were by any means true. After the first test alone, I can safely conclude the only exaggeration commented on here is that he is a good professor.Save yourself and drop out of college before taking this class.
hes the man, PLUS he loves Bjork, how awesome!
Professor Chandlee is a Great Professor. I learned alot from him already, although the next test is a bit iffy. So far I have an A in the course. All you really have to do is take some key notes and reall read the book. His exams are not very hard just read the book and go to the recitations. Every thing is on Webct. And I'm a freshman.
Took genetics at the Prov campus and it was an intense class of 6-10pm w/recitation, quiz, and lectures (2). I dedicated a lot of time to this class. but as for his grading, the quizzes come from the notes and long exams but ok, but offers 10pts extra credit on each exam. There is an extra pt quiz the 2nd class towards your final grade.
he is a brilliant geneticist. and a thoughtful helpful teacher
Nice/helpful guy, actually follows syllabus/textbook which is rare at this place. Lecture isnt very hard but DO NOT TAKE THE LAB 353. It BLOWS.
Very intelligent in the field of genetics. GO to class, always follow what he is saying and the rest is down hill. Recitation is there to help you. It really helped me understand the concepts from class. Keep up with reading too and be organized. Its GENETICS!
Very monotone and dry. Hard to follow along with. He is very knowledgable about genetics but if you ask him a question in class he isnt very good at answering it. GO TO RECITATION, it will save you.
Chandlee is just awful. Incredibly monotone in lecture. While he defines topics in lectures his exams feature mostly problems that hardly reflect practice assigned for homework. AND his exams are insanely long ~2 hours worth of work. I took 5 bio courses last semester, 4/5 I had an A. But I got a B with Chandlee.
extremely boring and slow. Lots of punnet squares on first test. Not too difficult- hands out extra credit.
Professor Chandlee presents the lecture material in a clear, oraganized, and thorough manor. He is, however, very monotone with his speech. ADVICE: drink some coffee before class, stay awake, and take detailed notes . If you take clear/detailed notes, you will get an A. His exams are STRAIGHT from his notes. This method is fool proof.
There's something about Dr. Chandlee that draws me to him. He's brilliant and wonderful. Yes, the class is hard. But there is a difference between a tough professor and a bad one. He is tough, but he is amazing. Keep up and you'll get an A.
Provides reading assignments, homework, and power points. Does not provide review to exams. Does not use reenforcement style of teaching and is very hesitant to help students.
This guy is brilliant. Go to class, write down everything he says, organize your notes, and do the reading assignments. Go see him as soon as you have any problems. You'll be fine if you don't wait until the last minute. Don't underestimate how much material there is
Great class!
Dr. Chandlee is so kind and approachable! I don't know why people are giving him low ratings for being monotonous.. even if his voice is the perfect voice to fall asleep to, it's not that he's not passionate about the subject. In fact, you can tell how much he loves genetics :) He made me want to study genetics for grad school. Amaz
Class is very dry, often talks too much to get to one point he's trying to make. First exam is hard, second two get easier.
Hard work but I learned a lot.
Loved this class. He knows his stuff and you will learn alot if you are willing to put in the work.
There are professors who are articulate, thought-provoking, willing to help students and are fair on exams through not expecting you to read their minds as to what they want...And then there is this guy. I had him last semester. Avoid this class!
Very confusing. He often over-complicated everything and used out of date slides and diagrams. Exam averages were often around 70 and the class was curved. He also referenced wikipedia as a legitimate source of information. Nice guy but can't teach.
Hard class, lots of work. Exams difficult, homework difficult. He's a good professor who tries to help you and teaches well and gives moderate bonus points. But the bonus points do not make up for the low scores on those intense exams! If you are wondering whether his monotone is that bad. YES. IT IS THAT BAD.
Incredibly monotone. If you're not already a pro, get ready to get very lost as soon as the first exam ends.
If you have to take Genetics to graduate with a B.S. in biology and you have read the negative comments about this professor, why take it at URI and then complain? Go somewhere else and take this class if you care so much about your grade. If you actually want to learn, this IS the professor for you.
The class is HARD but if you show up to class and keep up with the reading assignments it is not impossible. The monotone voice is bad but you just have to ignore it and listen. He gives you an extra credit quiz the second week where you can get up to 20 points added to your overall grade. THE BOOK IS NECESSARY TO PASS
You cannot read the text and expect to pass alone. I tried to just read the textbook, apparently--he teaches things in class that aren't in the text. Now that just isn't fair. Why can't courses at URI just be about reading a textbook and taking an exam--why are boring monotone lectures required! The boredom I have in his class--the horror...
Great class! Learned a lot!
Overall, Dr. Chandlee is a great teacher. The course itself is hard, but he does a good job with explaining the material. Exams are fair, and there will not be anything on them that he did not go over in class. Go to class and study hard and you will do well. Recitation does NOT help, because Dr. Chandlee does not teach that portion.
The class is a tough one. The material is just difficult to teach, Chandlee does a decent job, but you should visit his office hours and clarify everything. Anticipate trying. Don't take this class unless you need to.
He's a really good professor and explains everything in lecture well just beware of the monotone voice. If you have questions go to his office hours, he is very helpful when he explains things outside of lecture. It's a very tough class, read the book, study, and try to get as much help as you can.
He loves genetics, you can tell this through his lecturing. While the content is tough, if you study, go to class and put the time you can get a good grade. He gives plenty of extra credit, is always available for help. Also very fair grader, there was a question no one got right and he did not count it against anyone.
Hard class, if you work for it you will pass. Helpful if you ask specific questions, otherwise condescending. Really need to put in the work and the time for it, or you won't do well. Monotone is that bad. Coffee needed.
RECORD LECTURES!!!! What he says is SO helpful compared to his terrible slides. He never writes out problems so its really hard to follow where he's going but if you go back and listen and go along with the slides , everything will be clear. The exams are pretty tough but find old exams for SURE and study lecture notes!!! Online stuff helps too
He gives a lot of extra credit opportunity- extra credit quiz (pretty easy if you study, you'll need the extra points), every exam has bonus questions, extra hw assignments, etc. The lectures can be boring at times and he goes on about stuff that you really don't need to know. Powerpoints are mediocre; read book to really understand the stuff
Easy to get a good grade if you do the homework and make notes in class. Class can be very boring but I actually learnt a lot and developed an interest I didn't have before. Just try and pay attention and you'll be straight. Also, he gives a lot of extra credit questions so that's nice
Not too bad, lectures can be extremely boring but like anything else, you just need to put the time in. It's not bad if you keep up with it, the material is super interesting if you understand it. His teaching is fine if you can manage to pay attention. Studying slides (w/ good note taking) and reading the book will make the exams manageable.
Chandlee is very monotone and is difficult to pay attention to in lecture. He is so nice when you talk to him one-on-one and very fair. Lots of extra credit (30-40 points). Definitely taught myself from the book. Slides are only helpful supplementally after reading the book. Review sessions can be very helpful! Reuses some questions from old exams.
Dr. Chandlee is a solid person, but his monotone voice makes it difficult to stay alert and pay attention in class. The class itself is not that difficult, so long as you read the textbook and try to pay attention to the lectures. He is very helpful outside of class and will work with you to understand the material. He is also a very fair grader.
The laziest instructor I've had. Slides are a mess, and are a mixture of screenshots that he's taken from different websites. Student asked about difference between word on slide and word he was using - he casually said "I don't know I lifted this from somewhere". Post grades on Sakai? He said "Nah I don't mess with that." Really poor quality.
Dr. Chandlee teaches from his powerpoints. Read each chapter and learn concepts during the week. Logically do the practice problems he posts on his slides. Also be careful of the multiple choice questions on exams because they can be tricky. Study hard for the extra credit quiz because that can lift you up a letter grade at the end.
By far one of the worst professors I have ever experienced. Slides consist of nothing but screenshots or PDFs along with the fact that they do not align with the reading. Aside from these issues, he provides no guidance when studying for exams and is quite arrogant if a question is answered incorrectly. Would NOT recommend taking class with him.
Awful professor. Has the most monotone voice that can put anyone to sleep. He teaches from the slides but the slides generally contain zero information. He goes off on tangents for sometimes close to 15 mins that have little to do with what you need to know. had to learn basically everything from the textbook.
I learned an incredible amount from this class. Genetics is not an easy subject so expect to work for a good grade. Chandlee is a fair grader (lots of extra credit) and is very helpful during office hours or if approached after class.
Poor lecturer and speaks monotone. Need to read the book and seek him out during office hrs. Do all the extra credit he offers so that you have a cushion for his final which is difficult. He is not a good teacher and does not inspire you to learn genetics which is a very interesting field of study.
Absolutely horrible Professor, if you can avoid him do so. Goes on 20-30 minute tangents and gets nothing done. Talks monotone and stares at the board. I had to teach myself, and even the. The tests were confusing as hell.
Chandlee at first comes off as a nice old man but he's boring. Lectures are slow and useless and don't cover most of the material asked on exams. He doesn't teach you how to do the homework problems. The exam ?'s are ALL trick questions, which he doesn't prepare you for. Gives sassy responses when you ask him about mistakes he made on exams. avoid!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Take genetics @ CCRI instead of URI. No matter how good of student U may think U are, prepare for the most challenging BIO course Uve EVER taken. U will regret not taking this advice seriously, trust me. Dont bother with chandlees lectures (Unless U R Looking 2 SNooze), U MUST READ THE KLUGG TEXTBOOK in order to obtain the A!
Im not sure who the previous commenters are speaking of when they mention extra credit. Dr. Joel Chandlee has offered no extra credit to his fall 2020 sections. The sections are all doing terribly. Every quiz average is from 49-59%. Recitation does not help at all, and most days the quizzes are on recitation (so you dont receive instruction
Save your GPA, save your Money, DON'T TAKE GENETICS @ URI W/ CHANDLEE. Poorly written quiz questions, proctor refuses to clarify questions during quiz, recitation doesn't help during the rare occasions it actually takes place. quizzes fall on recitation days, so we miss out on instruction. Taking Genetics w/ Chandlee is like begging for cancer.
No matter how good of a student you are, you will struggle in this class. With monotone lectures, slides with no content, impossible quizzes, and trick questions on exams, you are set up to fail. If you have the opportunity to take genetics elsewhere or with a different professor you should!
Worst professor I have had. He posts way more lecture content than is allowed for normal class time. Tried meeting with him during office hours, he didn't show. He prides himself on making test and quiz questions tricky. He doesn't want you to get the answers right. He doesn't care if you have a grasp on the material. Studied very hard for nothing
Dr. Chandlee is clearly very interested in the field of genetics and likes researching it, but my GOD this man cannot teach. His lectures are dry and uninspiring, he speaks in a very monotone voice, and his exams rely heavily on trick questions. While he is knowledgeable, he is unable to effectively communicate the class material.
Though you can tell he knows a ton of information on genetics... after his lectures I still feel just as confused as before. He will put up a presentation, but only with diagrams he's gotten from other sources, no words. Shows whats expected, what the 'answer' is, but doesn't actually teach you how to get there. He expects you to teach yourself.
He does not seem to care about teaching. In lecture he sits in one spot of the room and reads his slides in the most monotone voice possible. Slides consist of poorly copied and pasted pictures from other textbooks and websites. Lecture slides have little notes and repeat themselves. Not good structure to the lectures at all. You teach yourself.
If you have a choice, take genetics with the other professor. His slides have very little info so you have to go to lecture, which are incredibly boring. Tests are hard on purpose, and got excited when the class average was a 60 on our first exam. Makes learning difficult and is uninspiring. He seems like he just does not want to do it at all
I took this class to learn more about the field of genetics. I finish this class knowing more about genetics but at what cost? If you must take general genetics, save yourself and take it with another professor even if it has to be during the summer or winter break term. I finish this class feeling tired, unmotivated, and overall unhappy.
Fair exams, very nice professor who will answer any questions. Learned a lot
Joel Chandlee is good professor. Material can be overwhelming. What you need to do: -Be on top of the lectures (Read through everything) and ask questions to clear up on any confusion. -Stay after class! you will thank me later. Please have him go over material you know may be on exams or quizzes. - Purchase workbook! with Answer key! Good Luck!
DO NOT take Chandlee's genetics class. Long and difficult homework assignments every week. The lectures are an absolute snooze fest, old dude rambles on with no notes on the slides. Slideshows don't help you study. Exams are tough, half take-home and half in-person. The take-home part takes 15+ hours to complete for only half of an exam grade! NO!!
