Joel is one of my favorite teachers at the school. He is very understanding about most peoples fears of public speaking and helps you overcome that. He makes the class very easy if you pay attention and do what your supposed to. I would highly recommend him for speech if you have to take it. Oh yeah, he's a great performance poet as well.

I saved speech for last because I was terrified of it. I ended up getting an A because this teacher was so amazing. I wouldn't say it was an easy class but an A is definitely possible. If you have to take this class, don't take it with anyone other than this teacher!! He's the man.

He is energentic and makes it exciting to do speeches. On the first day he told us never to be late, BUT then he talked about if we ever were running late to bring him a snack and he won't ask questions! FREAKING HILARIOUS! And his teaching style is great, he makes things easy to understand! :)

His class was way different that I expected. It was awesome. He has tons of energy and knows hes a little goofy, a great combo. He made me want to go to class every day. He was very clear as to what needed to be done for the speeches. I didn't think that he was that hard on grading, so long as you do what he requires. Definitely take his class!!

Full of energy and wacky. Class is hard due to subject, but he makes it somewhat bearable. Seems a little too lenient towards tangents, but lets you do speeches on whatever you want. Hated that he tapes you, but I guess you have to have some way to assess yourself. Would recommend to anyone who wants a fun teacher, but read the book & bring snacks!

Fantastic! On the first classday, he was being so weird, a few students were shooting nervous glances at each other. Another week into it, most of us were friends with Joel on Facebook! It's probably a tough class, but only because people usually try to avoid public speaking. He gives great advice, though, honestly making you surprise yourself!

Very fun teacher. Your biggest hw is what your group decides, besides taking notes that take 5 minutes b4 you go to class. I was amazed that the class i dreaded taking ended up being my favorite because of this teacher. You stay interested and learn and have a good time. Be prepared for lots of laughs if you take this class.

Fun and exciting. Pretty fair and makes you really comfortable during speeches. Such a comedian, you will love him. One of my favorite professors. Only complaint final exam sucked!!! Weird unfamiliar (I guess) speech jargon. Not enough time reviewing first time hearing terms. No multiple choice, all write in tricky questions will get you on final.

This was my favorite class. It was very interactive and it made speaking in public no problem. Joel was a comedian and made the class very enjoyable. Everyone in my class got to know one another and the tone was cheerful, and energetic. This class is a must take.

Joel makes speech an actual class. Don't expect the "give four speeches and your done" speech class. Gives homework, tests (mid term and a final), and checks your notes. He is very engaging and funny. His lectures and activities made the class one cohesive unit that learned from each other. I highly recommend Joel!!

He's young enough that he makes relatable comments that makes everyone feel comfortable. COME TO CLASS. If you aren't there you will be downgraded, but he makes it funny so it is totally worth it.

I was so terrified of taking Public Speaking. I took it once with one professor but didn't do as well as I thought, but when I took it again with Joel, he made me feel at ease with my speeches, and everyone was so supportive of one another. Doesn't grade very hard at all. I am willing to take other classes with him in the future.

Joel was a lot of fun because he didn't make you feel like you had to do a speech on something you don't care about. All of your speeches can be fun! In the end about half the class is watching speeches and relax learning environment. I wouldn't say I love public speaking now, but I now know how to better prepare myself for a public speech.

I dreaded going into this class, but Joel made it fun and he is hilarious. You do use the textbook for notes but the book is actually useful for your speeches. He is willing to help you out. The class overall had a good vibe and I can tell you no one dropped this class. Hes very energetic and engaging!

Also, we often discussed in groups about our topics which made speaking in front of everyone less nerve wracking because you basically got to know everyone.

My second time taking Joel and hes just all around an amazing person and professor. This is an enjoyable class as long as your group members dont suck. After each project you get to give a review of everyone though so if someone was slacking, you can tell him. We also had to meet outside of class with our groups to practice, which wasnt horrible

Mr. Chmara was very supportive and caring towards our feelings. He also made us laugh like no other teacher has done and he made us all happy and cheerful during this difficult time. We were all scared to do this class but when we met Mr. Chmara, he quite frankly changed our view on the class. He was very unique and an amazing professor.

Literally the best professor! Very understanding and cares about you. As long as you follow the outline for the speeches and try your best you'll be set. He does not give a lot of homework, the only homework we had was doing our outlines for our speech and a couple discussion posts but nothing too heavy. He also offers extra credit opportunities.

When i found out i had to take a speech class for my major, i was absolutely terrified. But on the first day of class, Joel gave off such a great vibe that i knew i'd be okay. He reassured us all (bc we were all scared) that it was okay to be nervous, but that he would be there every step of the way to help. He truly cares. Best Prof hands down!!

Awesome teacher, there's only 1 test which is open book, he has fun games for extra credit like guessing the song, easy to understand, grades you appropriately for how you perform in your speech, and helps you have more confidence. I personally didn't get much better at public speaking but I could have don't better for myself.

I was putting off on taking a speech class because of I was scared, even though it was required for my major. But Joel is AMAZING! He made sure to make everybody feel comfortable and reassured us with our concerns. Along with that, he made sure that everybody in the class was there for each other and that helped significantly. Joel's class was a great experience. Over his 8-week (16 class) course, I was unable to attend quite a few due to some personal issues. Joel was extremely understanding and gave me all the time to be ready mentally and physically. His class is very social and note based, but he made it very entertaining and excited. He is the sweetest soul. He really gives individual help and attention to each person. He genuinely wants each person to succeed, I cannot recommend him enough.

Joel is a very good teacher and has a lot of participation so you can get comfortable with your classmates before you speak in front of them. He actively gives feedback on your speeches and is clear about his expectations. He has many extra credit opportunities that are very easy and quick to complete. Overall, he is very nice and caring.

This teacher is one of the best teachers I have every had in CLC especially becuase his way of teaching speech was one of the most unique but helpful I came into the class as a timid person and turned into a someone who is comfortable in speaking in front of a class. He is also very flexable with hw.

Joel is so caring. Public speaking/speeches give many people anxiety, but Joel gives the class tips on how to reduce it. He even allows students to email him for more ways to help ease your nerves before a speech. The speeches are on topics that you want to talk about which is amazing! He gives EC. Joel is the best, you should take him for speech!

Mr Chmara is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is so flexible and nice and makes his office hours helpful for everyone who needs it. He thoroughly explains his assignments to students over and over again nicely. He gives extra credit for almost everything and anything you do. He is one of the best but nicest teacher I have had. Love him.

Joel was one of my favorite professors so far here at CLC. He is so respectful, kind, cool, and funny. Public speaking isn't one of my strengths, but Joel was always so helpful with my classmates and I. His lectures were straightforward and not difficult. It is important to show up on your speaking day!!! Overall, I totally recommend him!

A very caring and passionate professor. Speech classes can be scary especially for a first timer, but he makes you feel comfortable. He can be a little bit tough on his grading for speeches, but is really understanding if you reach out. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and not a lot of homework. Not a hard A if you do your work and EC.

Wow! Literally a legend. Joel's classes are inspirational, funny, and teach you so much about speaking. I also really appreciate that he lets you know at the beginning of the class where he stands politically but doesn't let his politics infiltrate into his class or lectures. So refreshing! Take his class if you can!

I was really nervous to take a speech class but he made the course so easy, and I feel so much more confident with public speaking now after taking this course. Waitlist in this class it's worth it. Professor Chmara is by far the best at CLC if his class is full just waitlist it. He's a very humorous and inspiring professor. Speeches in this class are straightforward and simple.

Joel fully understands how anxiety inducing public speaking can be for a lot of people and is incredibly empathetic about it. In one of the first days of class, he went over techniques to overcome anxiety. He offered many opportunities to practice speaking so that by the time we gave our first formal speech, it was less daunting.

Joel Chmara is such an easy-going professor, I enjoyed this class so much and managed to keep my grade up due to his extra credit opportunities. He accommodates to your needs and will hear you out.

Do yourself a favor and please take Joel's class if you need speech. I'm so thankful I was able to have him, I dreaded taking speech, but it ended up being my favorite part of my freshman year. Everyone in that class, I still talk to. He honestly made that class feel like a team/club just because of how close I got with my classmates.

Joel is an amazing professor and is so inspiring. Take his online speech class if you have too much anxiety for the in person class. The way he reassures the class before presentations is so soothing. I hated presenting and giving speeches but it was truly therapeutic and beneficial overall.

Amazing teacher ! Took his class this semester and was nervous to take speech but being online really helped. He was the biggest cheerleader and always gave so much support. He does give extra credit which is amazing! Would highly recommend!

10/10 recommend Mr. Chmara! He is super easy going and explains all the assignments/speeches in great detail. He makes it a point that if you need help or have any questions- he'll make the time for you! Lectures we not daunting- he made them simple and interactive. Would definitely take his class again!

Honestly two words, inspiring and caring! He has shown me ways to be better in my speeches and in life. Few things to know, he does not do finals or midterms, if you go over time in speech, just keep going, he wont affect your grade as much, and most importantly, listen to his lessons, it really does teach you things.
