Great Guy, really knows his stuff. You have to put in the same effort though.
Joel's a good guy. He knows geography, international culture, geographic information systems and a little about international business. His weaknesses come from not catering to our 5 minute attention spans and giving homework without much direction.
Really smart, really hot. Doesn't put up with BS but is a good teacher. He has traveled to a lot of interesting places and overall he doesnt grade that hard. The only thing that sucks about the class is there is a lot of stupid maps to color.
If you take this class prepare for boring map assignments and long reading assignments. He is an overall nice guy but he is a perfectionist. It will also be hard to focus in that class because he is BORING. In order to stay awake, you must participate.
His comparative government class was easy. Just keep up with the reading and its no problem.
Coolest professor I've ever had. Can't go wrong with alittle effort.
Joel is the best. If you read the material and do the work class goes by great and he is very understanding
Good guy - was a TKE - even better. Maps bored me a lil though
he has a obssesion with czech republic!!!
He is a good proffesor, cares about his students and helps them out. You have to work too though.
Class was pretty boring, but he was a challenging teacher. He really knows what he's talking about, but I thought he was kind of a jerk. Tried to be funny sometimes, but it came off as rude. Likes to hear himself talk
great guy. class is kind of tough but you just have to read allot and you will do well
HE is a hypocrit. He acts as though he's the boss and everyone should follow his orders or else you'll get an F and then another day he "tries" to be nice to the class so that we can like him.Exams are TRICKY, but it is possible to get a 3.7. He doesn't give 4.0s unless he likes you.
very unhelpful, biased, and selfish. do not take him unless you feel like being confused in every class and prefer kissing up to him to earn a decent grade...
lectures a lot but knows a lot so it's not bad. you need to work but lots of high grades. nice guy, very busy but happy to talk after or outside of class.
WOW! What can I say? He has a lot of knowledge but not a clue on how to disseminate it to his students. A recent poster is correct about him being a Czech Republic fan -- I wonder if he was born in the wrong country? Anyhow, if you are good at buttering up then take him. If not, avoid him like the "Prague"!
used to be good. now he is pretty arrogant because he has tenure.
The nicest prof I've had here. His travel experiences are the best part of class.
This guy knows what he is talking about. He is enthusiastic about his field. Some of the comments on this site are a reaction to a poor grade. Do yourself a favor and take this course. Yeah, you have to read and study, but you will actually learn something from him. If you are not an arrogent jackass in class then you will have no problem.
Easy to work with and considerate of students' work schedules. Very nice professor. There is a lot of reading and papers but everything is based on class discussions and the reading. If you do the work, youa re sure to get an excellent grade. Very fair professor and he brings real life travel experienced home to the classroom for everyone to share.
Excellent professor and fair grading. You should definetely take him!Not too hard!
If you do all the work, you should have no problem at all. If your INT class is highly diverse, you definitely will have lots of fun and learn a lot of interesting things from different cultures. Prof Deichmann has many exciting travel experience to share, which makes the class more enjoyable. Take INT with Prof Deichmann - you won't regret!
Nicest guy around..really down to earth..knows pretty much everything possible about geography...tries to tell jokes but it is always a disaster...class is easy, mostly fun to go to...definetly take this class it will be worth it and should be an easy 3.7 - 4.0...Deichmann is the man!
Traveled to Germany for Short Term Program. Extremely helpful and easy going. Very open to new ideas. Nicest professor I've had at Bentley. Recommend anything he teaches.
Good guy, class is boring and he makes the most PAINFUL jokes. Bad idea taking him at 8:30, makes the jokes even worse. Only 3 tests and a paper, really easy just show up and you will do fine.
I'm not really sure why everyone loves him. He is a nice enough guy, but his classes suck. He treats you like your a kid by making you draw maps. His tests are really hard because they are not directly from readings.
Good guy. You have 11 small 1 page papers to do and as long as you state your opinion its a 100. Midterm and Final are hard and tedious but overall an easy teacher. Class is NOT mandatory.
The maps are absolute killers: countries, capitals, rivers, oceans, seas, you name it. Class presentations are clear, but the tests are barely on anything covered in class OR in the book: you have to do outside research to do well on the midterm and final (study sheet is given). Expect a lot of outside work
maps are very easy, just color neatly... tests are absolutely brutal, he asks about anything and everything you read in the chapters which are each 50 pages long
Changed the course a bit... Made the tests harder because the reviews on RateMyProfessor.com said he was too easy. Tons and Tons of reading, like 50-70 pgs a week + map quizzes and homework. Tests are hard, I assume questions are made by a test generator that came with the book. Questions have nothing to do with what is discussed in class.
His is a decent guy but clueless. I have NO idea why he stresses out about the quality of the maps. I think he needs to chill on that and actually make his lectures worthwhile!
Worst professor ever. Unreasonable and awful at teaching. Knows how to make a trip to Europe more like a nightmare than a fun educational experience.
Very likeable professor, easy to get along with and very fun to travel with. I went with him to Croatia and Bosnia and it was an awesome experience! We travelled everywhere. Strongly encourage to go abroad especially Bosnia and Croatia! You'll have a blast.
Went with him to Croatia and Bosnia. Very friendly and easygoing. You still have to do some work though, but its nothing impossible. Hardest part are the language quizzes, but you're given the words to study beforehand. This class was great because you learn both from him, and also during your free time around cities that you're encouraged to do.
I went on Joel's trip to Croatia and Bosnia in May 2009 and had the time of my life. I had never been to that part of Europe and he made me feel very comfortable and safe throughout the entire trip. I learned and saw a lot, but the work load was not very demanding...good balance. Hardest part was the quizzes and had a ton of fun! highly recommended
I went to Croatia and Bosnia with Professor Deichman, and I am so happy I did! We had a great time but learned a lot too; although it never really felt like a class. We had to complete a few assignments before the trip, keep a journal while we were abroad, and write a paper on the topic of our choice. I would definitely recommend taking this class!
I went to Bosnia and Croatia with him and had an amazing time! The workload wasn't bad at all and I learned a lot! It is one of my best memories of my years at Bentley. I would highly recommend taking him, specially for an intensive abroad. You wont regret it!
My favorite undergrad class at Bentley (Czech, Croatia, Slovenia). Amazing experience, class became great friends. Up in the morning for sightseeing/ business visits/ lectures, light afternoon, and night free. Prof Deichmann is a terrific guy, VERY experienced traveler and knows how to have fun. Very lucky to have taken this course.
The trip to the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Croatia was an excellent experience. If I had the opportunity I would definitely do this again. It's a wonderful way to experience Eastern Europe and to learn a lot in a small amount of time. Prof. Deichmann is a very fair man and takes care of his students.
I went on the trip to Croatia and Bosnia last summer. I had studied abroad before and loved it. I loved this trip even more! We learned a lot but in a fun way - by meeting local students and families. We also had free time to explore on our own. I think the best part of the trip was some of the places we went I would have never seen on my own.
I took 2 global studies courses with him, one was a summer intensive to Germany & the other was Spring course to Poland and Ireland during spring break. Both classes were absolutly amazing and so much fun, two of my favorite classes at Bentley. You learn ALOT by just travelling with him too. I would 100% recommend taking an abroad class with him.
Professor Deichmann is a friendly and approachable teacher. He knows a lot about travel and tourism and has been everywhere! His class was interesting and spiced up with cool YouTube Videos. Assignments are reasonable. Multiple choice on midterm were a bit tricky but other than that everything is pretty straight foreward.
He made the class interesting. Definitely knows his stuff and the class has a lot of fun YouTube videos. Assignments were reasonable and exams were tricky. A lot of reading for the tests but no textbook was required.
His class is much harder than it needs to be. To get a 4.0 you basically have to memories every city, river, state/country/continent, etc. in Europe (which is ridiculousness). Other than that he is a great guy, extremely smart, and makes the class very enjoyable, even if your doing poorly.
Prof. Deichmann is a great professor. He is very passionate about what he teaes and for a GLS class, i highly recommend him. the class is 2 tests and a final paper, map quizzes and a couple of hw assignments. loved this class... take him!
Really nice guy and knows his stuff. Map assignments may seem elementary but they are the best way of learning geography. Exams were fair and any other assignments were reasonable.
Really interesting class and not too much work. Maps are really helpful. The tests are tough but he scales them.
Tough test that is not relevant to anything you learn. Lectures are confusing but work is straight forward.
Great guy, make sure you take notes during class. His multiple choice on his tests are hard, but if you do the readings you'll get the majority of them. Go to office hours before the test, he tells you the exam questions.
Overall I really enjoyed this class. I love geography and human behavior so this was and interesting class. However there was a major disconnect between the textbook and the class lectures. The textbook was confusing and irrelevant during the class period. But then the entire exam was based on the book.
Prof. Deichmann is super smart and really knows the subject matter but in my opinion, he is too smart for an intro level gov class. He tries to incite discussion that goes beyond the material and had handouts that only someone with a Masters could understand. Difficult class, I would not take it again.
Two tests on 6 chapters each. Both extremely hard to study for (like 200 text book pages) and he doesn't let us view his class power points. Graded my final essay pretty aggressively when I thought I'd worked really hard on it. Constant map quiz's and homework. Numerous better/easier GLS teachers out there. I wouldn't take him again.
Overall, he's a very nice professor and super passionate about global studies. There is a lot of reading for homework, but it will prepare you for future tests. He gives study guides which is extremely helpful. As long as you're willing to put effort into the class and do the work, you will be fine.
Really nice guy, I enjoyed going to class. You don't have to explicitly read the book to do well, the assignments on Wiley are long but going through the book for the answers will make you learn what you need to know. His grading is a mystery, I have no idea what I got on anything besides one exam and my homework, which is frustrating.
The class was okay and the material was interesting. All of the homework is online. Test material is based on the textbook and not necessarily lecture material, so reading is not necessary for class but is helpful in the long run. Everyone typically does poorly on the first midterm so he'll allow corrections. Other than tests, grades are a mystery.
Professor Deichmann is quirky, funny and clearly very passionate about what he teaches. He makes class interesting and finds ways to truly educate his students about the world. One of my favorite professors I've had at Bentley.
You can tell that Joel really cares about what he is teaching but it has absolutely nothing to do with what is on the tests. The tests are based on the textbook. I got an A- in his class and did little to no reading. I took his class during the pandemic so the final was open book and easy. If you have the option choose a different professor.
WINTERSESSION: Nice guy, interesting, learn a TON. Low key final. Although fair workload, it is an intensive, ideally start precourse work B4 Jan 1 & pick research paper topic B4 class starts so you can do research in the evenings.(due 5 days after course ends). Harder if youre weak @ govt/current events/writing since compressed time. I recommend.
Joel is the man! Good amount of reading and multiple choice questions but relatively easy final and paper. A lot of lecturing but he is super smart and nice and likes to incite discussion so participate as often as you can.
The only unlikeable thing about his class was the amount of hw. We had about 11 take-home 12 question multiple choice quizzes which were fine, they just took a while. The chapters are slightly long. A couple of 2-3 page papers. A written summary for each chapter along with a final class presentation. midterm/final tests were 40 mc and 3 essay quest
This is the best professor I've had at Bentley. The homeworks are a bit longer since you have to read the whole chapter to answer correctly, but still, it is a pretty easy class. No midterms or finals and is an A class if you read. Will recommend the class and will take it again if it was possible.
Literally the best professor. 4 "quizams" which are all open everything and don't have to do them in person, map journal can be tedious but just have to space it out, homework is questions from the textbook, and a country presentation. lectures are very interesting and current, and he does kahoots sometimes.
Really liked his class and he is not a tough grader, best professor I've had so far. Interesting classes but he is lecture-heavy with the homework but worth it. Tests are easy and you can do them anywhere, don't have to attend class for tests, and are open book.
all he does is talk for the entire class. assigns so much homework, so much reading, its all useless busy work. he is a very hard grader- if you miss an assignment... good luck, he aint budging. I would not take him, and I would not take this course.
Professor Deichmann is a great teacher. His lectures are interesting, he's very nice and understanding, and he turns boring courses into fun classes. Definitely recommend.
He is a really great guy, super nice and passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches, the reading for this class is a TON and pretty necessary for the homework questions and he is not very good at making it super clear the work we have and when its due but overall a pretty easy class and he's a great teacher.
Most of classes are lectures which were interesting. He is a nice guy, but there was a good amount of work in the class with a 6-8 page final paper and presentation due at the end of the semester. Very passionate about the topic and he is a tough grader.
Professor Deichmann is a good guy who always has interesting stories to tell in class and is very passionate about the subject which makes it interesting. 2 tests, 1 paper, 5 writing assignments and 10 short reactions. Tests are unnecessarily hard and based on specific facts. He doesn't give much direction for larger assignments which is stressful.
He is very knowledgeable on world tourism considering he has been to dozens of countries. Pretty nice guy. Frequent homework which was concise writing (250-500 words). Midterm and final were not bad, but very specific. Finally paper was 6-8 pages but pretty manageable. Great pick for an elective.
Super nice guy. I enjoyed the class topic and it's clear Joel is knowledgeable. Has tendency to ramble/go on tangents which can make class a bit dry. Did not love the frequent assignments but they're easy and good exam prep.
Not a good professor. Graded assignments poorly that should have been graded higher. The class is based around transportation and tourism, and a lot of what we learn isn't on the exams, there are also things we never learned on the exams.
MY LORD AND SAVIOR I love this man. Theres a discussion post due every class but its an easy A. Attedance isnt mandatory. He is so easy to listen to cuz he makes jokes. He lets u go outdoors for group work. I never bought the textbook and was fine. The midterm is hard and lockdown browser but he curves it.
Absolutely adore prof. Deichmann. He is a great teacher and an even better person. Some of his assignments were kind of clarity, but as long as you email him, he will do whatever he can to make it make sense and give good feedback on work that you've done before it's due. Overall, great guy and I enjoyed this class.
He cares a lot about his subject in 325. He even traveled to every county in the US. If you even they a little bit in this class it will be enjoyable. Not very hard, filled with common sense easy to memorize. He's very sweet but monotone, just ask him for help if needed. Weekly homework's but only 250 words with 4 500 word projects. Easy if you try
Good professor with a lot of knowledge. The only problem I can find with the class is the exams, these are so long for the time given to do them.
Would never take again. He's usually an easy grader on papers and assignments, but his exams were crazy hard, and he lacks communication skills. His lectures are insanely useless, and he spends too much time talking about his own trips and research instead of teaching. Didn't learn a thing in class.
Best guy class is so light just talk about the world.
This online course is clearly laid out and easy to follow and not a ton of work. Each week there is lecture videos, quiz, sometimes a discussion post, and sometimes an activity. Theres 2 "quizams" and 1 term paper/presentation. Everything open notes/textbook. The work is not heavy and it is easy to follow if you complete everything on time
Professor talks a lot which is not good for 8am. Every class has 2-3 assignments due. Assignments are pretty easy while classes are boring.
A very easy elective to take and an easy A. highly recommend
Deichmann is a top-notch guy and professor. Learned way more than I thought I would for an online class. He clearly cares deeply about what he's teaching and his students' learning. Exams can be annoying, knowledge of very obscure facts required for them and a little long for the time given to do them. However, it is a very doable A/A-. Recommend.
He was a great professor. He really knows his stuff and is very helpful with anything you need. There is a lot of busy work that you have to stay up to date with. The project at the end of the year was a breeze, and so were the tests. Definitely recommend!
