Joel is great. Any person serious about learning in the Art Major need to be exposed to this guy. He's a good teacher and has a understanding of quality vs quantity when it comes to work in the class.

Joel is the bomb-diggety. He acknowledges individual needs and learning styles in his courses and caters to you on a personal level. He always makes class interesting and a joy. He is the sole person responsible for keeping me positive about art.

Joel explains things pretty clearly, is willing to actually work with the students based on their needs, not some stupid fixed schedule. Plus, he's pretty easy on the eyes. Also awesome to model for. Takes awesome care of his models.

He is one awesome teacher. A little too old for me, but not bad looking. Great sense of humor, encouraged us to be rebellious against society. Funnest class I have taken yet.

Professor Joel is an extremely nice and zany guy, but if you're interested in learning about art, this isn't the class to take.

Prof. Joel is an awesome, down to earth person who does very well at teaching the stuff he does teach. Wish he would have showed us more art work. He focuses on the basis of art: line, value, hue, etc. He doesn't put much emphasis on famous art work. But it is the best class that I have ever taken.

professor joel is the best! he's absolutely crazy, but an incredible teacher. i've learned so much and improved a lot in his class. TAKE HIM IF POSSIBLE! just, don't be scared by his love of banging on things. it's funny...really!

BEST CLASS YOU'LL EVER TAKE! hes sarcastic, goofy, random, identifies with the students, understanding, and makes art interesting. if you have to take any apprec. class, make sure its with him. he makes coming to class fun, and you do learn at the same time. show up, its worth it. 2 credits of fun!

great time, lots of laughing, made u want to come to class every morning. the crazy stories he tells you help you remember stuff for the tests, if you spend the time, you'll get a good grade. wish there were more professors like him!

I missed a week of summer class due to my honeymoon. Joel still let me in and trusted that I would bust my butt. I did the best that I could and wish I had more time to take more classes with him. I loved printmaking and Joel is a blast!

Elgin is the man. Best class by far. Make sure you sit in the front student types. Joke around with him and do all the work and you should be fine, and then you will become a suave student type.

This class was SO much fun. Joel is hilarious and great at getting everyone to bond on some level (and he makes really friggin good brownies). He cares about his student-types and will push you to do what he knows you're capable of. Take any class with him you can-you'll learn and laugh a lot!

Prof Joel definitely has a different teaching style and shows a lot of enthusiasm, too. At times I wondered why he gave us such odd assignments/lectures, but in the end I realized how much we learned from him. I never "got" art until Prof Joel's class.

too good of a teacher to pass up. learned more about the tools that create the art experience. i'd never worked w/ p.pt., & scanners and he was able to reward me w/ an A for my efforts and achievements.....the PURE experience!

On the first day of class Beloved Professor Joel said that he would turn me into an art major. I doubted him at first, but lo and behold, I've decided to change my major, and it's because this is the first class I've ever taken that I really, really wanted to do the work for. Great environment, tons of fun, and makes you want to be serious.

Beloved Prof. Joel embodies all that is good in the world. Helpful teacher, great guy, and very suave.

The best teacher EVER!!! Take him if you can. class is SO easy and super fun!!! and you actually learn things by doing goofy and really funny activities. you only have 2 quizzes and theyre so EASY, he gives you all the notes. Take him, he's the BEST

Beloved Prof. Joel is by far one of the best teacher's I have ever had. He really knows how to make a class like art apprec interesting and fun. I only missed one class, and hated that I was too sick to go. Every day was a new day- new fun!! There is no way you can do bad because you actually want to do what he assigns you- design a webpage etc

I took all of his classes and loved coming to school every day. He pushes his students and grades fairly. He doesn't give his A's away and I have respect for that. A most inspiring teacher!!

Was a great class to take freshman year. Very easy teacher and the 2 test are easy too. He test consist of 13 questions and the test is worth 150points. He ask odd questions that you would not expect to be on the test, but he is the king of partial credit. The hardest part about the class is remembering to blog weekly. He cancels class a lot.

shop o' love = the best place on earth. if you're an art major take him every semester you get the chance, the earlier the better! if you take him later on, you'll regret not taking him earlier. just go talk to him and he'll give you an override for whatever you need.

My absolute favorite art professer at UWL. If you can take him. He's great; fun, funny, interesting and he knows his stuff! Always willing to help you out when you need it and tells you when you don't. I learned a lot and enjoyed doing it, it didn't feel like doing any work at all. I'll be taking his printmaking class next semester garenteed.

Awesome Professor! 7:45 classes are usually a drag but not this one. No matter how tired you are you will have a hard time falling asleep. 55 min goes by so fast.

Not only one the best professors I've ever had but also one of the nicest, most caring people I've ever met. I'm no art major but he managed to make a 7:45 gen ed class my favorite of the semester! HILARIOUS! Take him-- you won't regret it!

Take this teacher, he made a 745 class easy to wake up and go to. He is not only pretty easy but he keeps you interested in what you learn. He doesn't email all that well and he knows it but hes still amazing! TAKE HIM!

Honestly my favorite class out of both semesters as a freshman. Best professor too. He makes class enjoyable to attend and has a great sense of humor. Very personable guy and knows almost everyone's names in class. Just don't forget to comment on the group discussion every week and you'll be fine! Definitely Take!!

Prof Joel was awesome. I was really not looking forward to taking my apprec classes so I decided to take them online to get them over with. I really wish I had been able to attend his real classes because he is an awesome prof. Online you have to write a discussion post and read 25 from other students as well as completing 3 projects. All were fun!

Basically if you show up and do your 3 studios, you'll get an A. He doesn't like grading tests, so he basically gives everyone a B or higher on the 2 tests. As for the studios, you have to write 10 formal analyses and take 40 photos. 10/10 would recommend!

Joel (he only goes by Joel) is hilarious! He made even the driest material interesting. He's not afraid to make fun of students who ask for it, and he makes his class fun. He understands students take his class to fulfill GE requirements and grades accordingly. Just get your work done, and you'll pass with an A. I'd take Joel again in a heartbeat.

Joel and Printmaking have changed my life in the most magical of ways. I am left speechless when I try to explain how extraordinary Joel's classes are.

I've had Joel for two classes now and I can't say it enough: TAKE HIS CLASSES. Joel is always funny and understanding. He doesn't ask too much of his students and still makes the classes fun. The most time consuming part of this class is filling up your sketchbook, but if you stay on track it's easy. No exams, just projects. 10/10 would do it again

I took ART102 over the summer and Joel was great. Wish I could've taken him in person! He shared pics of his trip around South America/Mexico and made sure we knew that he knew it was a GE class and that he was chill. The Studios are fine if you don't put them off. His readings and posts everyday were actually interesting. TAKE HIM!

Take if you need an easy A for your gen eds. Most of the class was talking about easy art concepts and we had 2 fairly easy quizzes the whole semester. The rest of our grade was for a group project where we had to talk about a famous painting and "Studios" which was taking pictures of yourself and writing about it. JOEL IS AWESOME! Take him!!

Easy class! Really chill guy and lets you earn time out early. Funny and always makes class enjoyable even if you can't stand art. You are graded on showing up and doing discussions online.

By far the funniest and most Suave proffesor I've had at UWL. Very passionate about all types of art and is caring of students. Really made me realize the intentions and work that goes into a single piece of art. Wish I had more semesters of school so I could take him again.
