lecture is interesting because he makes jokes a lot, but he is not as good of a lecturer as melissa hudley. Also, melissa hudley offers about 3 or 4 points overall more extra credit than he does, so definitely try to get her instead of Joel.
He seemed nice at first, but turned out to be unhelpful, not understanding when people didn't automatically understand a concept. He is bad at explaining, goes really fast, and he's boring. Don't expect an easy science course by signing up for his class.
As a person, he's great. Love the man. But as a professor, he's pretty awful. He goes way too fast, and he goes too in-depth for an introductory course. And of course, he expects you know extremely specific information for the exams.
Completely useless as a professor. He will tell you to google answers instead of teaching. He has no control of the class and talks about pop culture instead of answering student's questions. No study guides are given and exam questions can come from material not covered in class. You will learn nothing and get a bad grade. Don't take as a GE!!
This is not a difficult class if you're willing to put in a bit of effort. All of the lecture slides are placed on the course site (which is extremely generous), and if you take the lab in conjunction with the lecture, you get extra review. Joel can seem brusque to southerners, but it's simply his New York demeanor. Don't be intimidated. He's nice.
Tests are insane, some of them do not contain course material. Should create new ways to keep students engaged rather than reading slides on the board. Do not take geology, UNC has a bad geology program with professors that do not respond to you and are happy with a 70 class average. Lab was the same way and we never even met that professor.
Professor Hudley was pretty awful. He seems like he would be a cool guy to hangout with but he was an awful teacher. I had him for prehistoric life and prehistoric life lab--- he doesn't answer questions preferring that you Google them, lectures on tons of material every class, anddd basically you don't learn anything.
Course material was interesting. Joel just is not a very good teacher. I would not recommend taking his class if you are looking for an easy A or B.
Dr. Hudley deserves much better reviews than he gets here! If there's any downside to his teaching, it's that he gets really excited about his subject material and talks really fast. That being said his lectures are loaded with related and unrelated humor and by far he is the most entertaining/interesting teacher I've ever had. 159 was very fun!
Dr. Hudley was a great professor. He starts class off with a joke and continues to crack jokes throughout his lectures. Although at times class would go by really fast and often I felt as if I did not understand what was going on, he posts a lot of study materials on his website- Study materials at 90% like the tests. I really enjoyed the class!
Dr. Hudley is a great guy and is really funny. He tends to make jokes at the start of each class period to everybody ready for geology. His tests are relatively fair although I will say, you should definitely study the study guides if you want to pass. The lectures are interesting however he will not round you up as stated in his syllabus, easy B+.
I've never left a rate my prof. rating before and I feel inclined to for Dr Hudley because I feel the reviews on here are too harsh. I took this class as a social science major, thinking it would be terrible and it really wasnt that bad. Bottom line: don't be lazy. If you're not lazy, you'll do just fine.
Classes with Dr. Hudley feel more like conversing with a friend than listening to a professor lecture, which can be both positive and negative; either way, it is certainly unique. He understands that not all students are as passionate about the material as others, and therefore manages to keep class engaging. Don't be afraid to speak up in class!
Maybe "nobody cares", but Joel Hudley sure does. Do it. You know you want to.
One of my favorite profs i've had so far. The material of the class itself is a lot, but it is all memorization. NgL his lectures do not relate to the tests. He gave study guides that looked identical to the test so be sure to do them. He tries to convince his class to become geology majors, and you can tell he is very passionate about the material
He might be a funny guy but he really can't teach. His lectures are convoluted and useless and the tests are difficult and unrelated. I've honestly learned nothing. I really don't recommend him at all.
Favorite professor! The lectures doesn't really matter, but it is fun to listen to him talk. The exams are easy as long you study the study guides. Attendance is mandatory.
I had to take this as a non-stem major to get my science out of the way. This class was miserable. He didn't write his own tests because we found the answers online where they were clearly copied from other universities. The tests had nothing to do with the textbook or what we learned about in class. Don't take this class. Find another gen ed.
SINGLE HANDEDLY the WORST professor at UNC. Doesn't teach in class, flips through slides extremely fast and somehow expects you to know it on the test? Also, the slides are ridiculous, has one figure that is unexplained so studying is very hard to do. Gives a study guide from other schools and then the test doesn't cover the guide AT ALL.
This man is awful. He makes you purchase the textbook which is the least useful book. The labs are poorly designed and have little to no organization. The same is with lectures. Very unorganized and doesn't remember what he teaches us (nothing) and then tests us on material from other classes that aren't a prereq. Just a ridiculous class overall.
While I think Dr. Hudley is a very fun and interesting person to talk to and chat with when you run into him in the hall, I don't think he is a good teacher and I feel that I haven't learned anything from the class. I can't even take him or the class seriously because he just flips through slides like they're nothing and won't answer any questions.
I've never left a negative review on here but I had to this time. He doesn't stop to actually lecture and go over the slides, maybe mentions tidbits of information that seem irrelevant once and then it's on the tests. We didn't get a study guide. Dr. Hudley is a great and hilarious guy who clearly likes his subject but tbh he can't teach it.
Dr. Joel Hudley is an amazing professor and one of the best I've ever had at UNC. If you talk to him and want help, he has no problem in giving you all the help you need. He sometimes gets off-topic (and his off-topic rants are amazing) but if you miss a topic because of lost time, he won't test you on it. Definitely an interesting character. l
Ok, so please do not take this class unless you want to wreck your gpa. Everyone in there just needs a science credit but he is so horrible. You cannot do well even if you try and he does not care about how the students are doing. The tests are so random and awful and even if you study the powerpoints and all class materials you won't do well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It was immersive and interactive. I can honestly say I learned about subjects I had no background knowledge in, and I will be able to use this knowledge in the future. Some things that could this course: smaller groups for investigations. I found that often, one or two people would complete the entire assignment.
Dr. Joel is so knowledgeable about planet Earth and gives really good information about planet Earth. Also, in order to do really well in this class, read the assigned readings before class, attend lecture, pay attention and take close notes during lecture, and go to office hours to ask follow-up questions.
Dr Hudley is a hilarious professor that has a passion for what he is teaching! I would recommend him to anyone. As long as you put in the effort and listen to the lectures you should be fine. Overall, Dr Hudley is awesome
Doctor Hudley is one of the best professors I've ever had. He combines lectures and group works together, enabling us to work and study with our classmates. He is also very humerous, having his class is a lot of fun for me!
Professor Hudley is incredibly personable and funny and makes the class exciting to attend. Although geology is not a course I am intending on pursuing, he made it enjoyable with his jokes and stories. His teaching techniques are easy to follow because he simplifies more complex concepts.
Dr. Hudley is, on a personal level, a very cool guy. He gives solid lectures, and wants his students to succeed. It is important that you show up to every class. The midterms are definitely challenging, and you must have a strong understanding of the relationships between the concepts he teaches. If you study hard, you'll be fine. He's very fair.
Dr. Hudley is a very interesting professor. He's funny and makes class engaging even though learning about rocks isn't the most exciting thing in the world. The tests are not easy, but if you study the lecture slides and go to office hours you can do well enough and there is extra credit to help you if tests are not your strong suit.
He is a very great professor and I would definitely take his class again
This class is very enjoyable because of professor Hudley. he makes the lectures go by much faster and makes them interesting. i think that he is very fair and a good professor when it comes to explaining material and relating them the outside factors. if you come to class and do the investigations you will be fine.
Joel Hudley's class is a fun class to take. The lectures are engaging and interesting. Sometimes he goes off topic but in a good way. The midterms are challenging if you do not study, but if you review the content you should be good. I recommend taking Hudley's class because of the interesting lectures and conversations that occur.
Dr. Hudley is an outstanding professor. His lectures are very helpful for exams as he explains everything very well. He gives 2 midterms that are difficult, but manageable, and a final exam. He also gives some extra credit and runs a very productive and fun class.
If you're looking for a friendly and pretty funny professor to teach you Geology, then Joey is the professor you want! Whenever questions are asked, his always tries his best to answer their fully. He's also been helpful and dedicated to helping you when visiting during office hours. However, he breezes through powerpoint slides really fast.
Dr. Hudley is one of the funniest professors I've ever had. Makes class interesting every day and encourages participation. Class is lecture heavy and you need to pay attention and take notes on what he says apart from slides. Tests are difficult but gives you tips on what to study. 2nd time taking one of his classes and would definitely again.
Dr. Hudley is a hilarious professor and the class, while difficult, will definitely be funny if you have him. Be sure to look over the learning objectives before his exams because they are heavily based on them.
Dr. Hudley is an amazing professor who is very passionate about his lectures. He is very easy to talk to after class and is always available for help at his office hours. Exams can at times be difficult but he always makes time to explain concepts that may be confusing.
Dr. Hudley is a great professor that clearly demonstrates his passion for geology. He's very funny which makes his lectures very engaging, even if you lack prior interest in geology. The class is lecture heavy with challenging exams, but he posts all of his slides online and gives us a list of learning objectives so that we are able to prepare.
Professor Hudley is a great teacher and person as a whole. He cares a lot about geology and is very passionate about geology. I think everyone should take this class.
Dr. Hudley is a great professor. His class is very lecture-heavy, but he keeps it engaging with his sense of humor. Make sure you study the learning objectives from each lesson. His tests pull from those and can be a bit difficult if you haven't studied. I would recommend him to anyone based on character alone. Fun and knowledgable professor.
Dr. Hudley is one of the funniest professors I have ever had. He is very intelligent and helps you understand the material through interactive lectures. It is very lecture heavy but he gives you objectives to study for the exams. I have had one of his classes before and I would definitely take one again, even if it is challenging.
Dr. Hudley is undoubtably one of the funniest and most engaging professors I have ever had. In most lecture classes, 50 minutes of going through slides can seem like an eternity. However, Dr. Hudley's humor and interest in what he's teaching makes the class fun and turns the lecture into more of a conversation. Definitely would recommend!
A great and caring professor. I have never been a science person, but I genuinely enjoy his class. His tests are on the more difficult side, he sets up the class with several ways to boost your grade, including poll everywhere, in class worksheets, and even extra credit. He gives a very in-depth final study guide which can help tremendously!
You can absolutely tell that Professor Hudley is passionate about his job. His lectures are very entertaining as he is a unique but very nice character. The class is lecture style with not much work, polls, assigned reading, group worksheets, and very few exams; plus, he gives you lots of opportunities to boost your grade with extra credit work.
Dr. Hudley is a funny, cool professor. His tests can be challenging, but he wants students to succeed and offers help through office hours. He offered me helpful advice on how to study, not only for his class but for my other classes as well. His Geology101 lecture is challenging but he provides the resources needed for you to succeed if you TRY!
Dr. Hudley is really passionate about what he teaches. He has an alive personality. You have to take good notes after class because critical thinking is something he stresses. He gives extra credit if needed.
Professor Hudley conducts his class in a way that captivates his students and encourages them to learn. His use of humor keeps the class on their toes, and the geologic concepts are always described in depth, using many examples, so that the students are able to fully grasp the material they need to know for examinations.
Dr. Joel Hudley is very passionate about teaching, and about geology as a field. He tries his best to engage his students in the classroom setting, and gives frequent group work assignments for students to self-check their knowledge of geology
Dr. Hudley is smart, funny and his lectures are always interesting. He gives hilarious examples that explain tough course content with ease, so go to his lectures! If you don't understand something, asking him questions right after class is a good choice, and he is always happy to help. He has been able to answer all my questions satisfactorily.
Dr. Hudley is a good professor. He is funny and makes geology, of all subjects, actually interesting. I found the tests to be extremely difficult but he gives a lot of points for geologic investigations and poll everywhere which will really boost your grade.
Dr. Hudley is an amazing professor. Hes funny and makes geology interesting. The tests are difficult but he is will to work with you and help you
Dr. Hudley is an entertaining professor who wants all of his students to succeed. He makes class interesting by adding his sense of humor to lectures, therefore making class go by fast. He is helpful outside of class during office hours where he provides more clarity on topics. He also provides extra credit opportunities, which is helpful.
Dr. Hudley is a very funny and engaging lecturer. He does a good job explaining his powerpoint and does poll everywhere so attendance is very important. Tests are definitely very difficult but geologic investigations help balance it out. If going to take GEOL101, would recommend him as a professor!
Prof Hudley would've convinced me to be a Geology Minor had I not taken this course as a senior, coming from a humanities. He is seriously funny and super willing to interact, as long as you are not just a mindless jock. I've never felt more comfortable participating in class. Could teach to the test more, but teaches fun stuff beyond the class.
Dr. Hudley his a fun and down to earth professor.
I took this course to fulfill a gen ed requirement, but Dr. Hudley made the class actually really enjoyable. In his lectures, he engages students and makes the material really interesting. He wants you to succeed in this course, and he makes it obvious from the first day. The material can be difficult, but go to office hours and he'll give help.
In this class, be ready to take notes, read, and review the power points nightly! Dr. Hudley is an extremely entertaining, passionate, and engaging lecturer, but it is up to you to keep up and be involved. The tests can be tough, but if you take notes, engage in the lectures, and review the learning objectives and investigations you will do great.
Geology 101 with Dr. Hudley doesn't require a lot of out of class work and is a very fun lecture to attend. Dr. Hudley communicates with his students individually and is extremely funny in class. He lectures daily but also puts his slides online in case you miss anything which is very useful as someone who hasn't attended every lecture.
Dr Hudley is a great professor. The class is lecture heavy ( as all science classes are) but he keeps them really interesting and is very funny. The tests are a bit challenging, but if you take the time to see him during office hours and apply yourself they are not that bad. He is very caring for all students and genuinely loves what he teaches.
Joel is a very interesting dude. This is definitely a good class to take with him. He will talk a lot about Frosty's and their texture in later units. He is a very positive person who definitely knows his stuff and has taught me a lot more than I ever thought I would know about geology. I hope to win the geology section of trivia if there is one.
Dr. Hudley's Geol101 is mostly lectures, but he is interesting and humorous in his discussions. He doesn't take attendance but it's important to go so you don't miss a day with a group assignment. He is very helpful in his office hours where he can help provide study tactics to attack his challenging misterms.
Dr. Hudley has a great sense of humor & is a lively teacher. I often leave his classroom wanting to know more about the earth we live on, and with a deeper appreciation for nature. I have really enjoyed his lectures & his assignments are fairly graded. I would recommend his class. He also does well at encouraging students to take more geo classes
Dr Hudley makes sure to keep his lectures fun and engaging. The lectures can be fast-paced at times, but questions are always welcome either in class or afterwards. Dr Hudley makes it easy to participate and attend in class, which will be necessary in order to do well on the tests and group projects. Would recommend this class.
Dr. Hudley is by far one of the best professors I've had had here at UNC. He presents great lectures and is a caring teacher.
Dr. Hudley is extremely passionate about his field of study, which makes him eager to teach and share knowledge. His test are on the more difficult side, but he gives ample opportunity for extra credit!
Joel Hudley is one of the best professors I've had. He is very energetic during his lectures and keeps it fun with an occasional joke. I would definitely take this class again. Grades are consisted of participation, tests, and an occasional geologic investigation.
TAKE DR. HUDLEY'S GEOL 101 CLASS!!! He keeps fairly dry material really interesting and he cares about student success. Also, he has tons of experience in his field which makes him fun to listen to and learn from. I have tried a couple of different lab science classes to fulfill gen ed's and geology was the only one I could stick with! Great class!
Joel Hudley's class is not the easy-A 101 class that many expect (he himself admits his exams are demanding), but his enthusiasm and passion for the subject make the class extremely enjoyable and rewarding. Hudley consistently engages with the class and makes his lectures entertaining and worthwhile.
IF you want to do well in his class you have to go and make sure you take good notes and pay attention. His exams are very difficult but he gives a lot of extra credit to help you with your grade. He is a professor that does not want his students to fail and wants them to do well.
Professor Hudley makes geology interesting. He makes good analogies and comparisons to help you better understand the content. All of the classes are pretty much lectures, but you don't have to worry about being bored. He's pretty entertaining. If you want a science gen ed that you can pull a good grade out of, this is it.
Dr. Hudley is one of my favorite professors at UNC. Funny guy that cracks jokes in class and loves movies. His lectures are helpful for the tests for background knowledge, but you do need to read the textbook to fully understand the material.
Dr. Hudley was the worst professor I have had at UNC. I got a concussion halfway through the semester and he handled it VERY poorly. He verbally attacked me over email which caused me to withdraw. Clearly does not care about his students. He also stares at students in class and it made me very uncomfortable. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!
Pretty good professor overall, the class was a bit harder than I expected but if you just make sure you understand the main idea and learning objectives of his lectures you should be fine. His commentary is hilarious and he always had a random but super interesting conversation with students as they were coming into class before it started.
Dr. Hudley is one of the funniest guys I've ever met. His class requires pretty much no outside work apart from studying. for. the exams. His exams are really hard but. he does end up curving exam grades so it's incredibly easy to finish with an B+ or an A-. Take this class if you're fine with doing little work and not getting an A.
Joel is really funny but the lectures can be long and rough to sit through. Tests are decent. Not too bad if you put some effort in.
Dr. Hudley is hilarious, and he really wants the class engaged during lectures. However, you find that it is incredibly hard to get a A or B during his first three tests as it covers many topics we didn't study during lecture. Nice guy, class didn't make sense.
Dr Hudley was a nice and funny guy, but his exams were difficulty and covered material that we definitely did not learn in class. During his lectures he spoke at a million words per minute, and repeatedly ignored students requests for him to slow down. That being said, it was very easy to get full credit on the few assignments we had.
Joel Hudley's class is a difficult one: his lectures are long and he speaks fast. Instead, I recommend recording the lectures on a computer and re-watching them instead of attending them live. He does give 30% of your grade automatically, so if theoretically make a C on all exams, you should pass. Nevertheless, the 4 exams are challenging. 5/10.
Professor Hudley is not a good professor. He went too fast during the lectures and waits till the last minute to grade anything for our class. I should have ended up with a B but instead, I ended up with a B- because he decided to cut corners. Very disappointed in him so please do not take it if you have to take geology.
Dr. Hudley is hilarious and is very passionate about geology. As previously stated, exams are challenging but he posts lectures and provides exams from other semesters to prepare with. He sometimes gets off track or covers topics really quickly. Very lenient grader for the projects. Would definitely recommend.
The tests are HARD! Hudley isn't accessible outside of class, and tends to ignore comments on Zoom. Although I liked him as a person because he's funny, I wouldn't recommend him as a prof, simply because he takes years to grade things. If you really need to take geol101, I think you'd be fine with Hudley, but it's boring.
I took Dr Hudley my freshman year, had a great experience, and then took class with him again senior year. He is very entertaining in online classes. A lot of it the exam ends up being from the textbook though he says it is optional - so this is my advice, buy the textbook, and show your interest while in class and youll get a high grade
This is not your easy "Rocks for Jocks" gen-ed class. Dr. Hudley spoke so fast during lectures, and a lot of questions of the exams were never mentioned. His geologic investigations were graded mostly on completion though. It's not too bad if you are looking for a B, but hard to get an A. I recommend a different class if you're looking for a gen-ed
Dr. Hudley was a great guy and was extremely friendly and flexible. In online lectures, the pace was extremely fast which made it hard to grasp all information in an effective way. Tests sometimes covered topics that were not in lectures or readings and were VERY dense
Nice guy, but class is fast paced and he definitely makes you work for it. Said at the beginning most would get an A-, prob true. Read the textbook and write notes or highlight- the tests pull a lot from the book. He posts the lecture slides, but take good notes in class bc most of the slides are pictures. Will give answers/help in lab, just ask.
I took his GEO200 last year online, and it was a disaster. He read PPT so fast and didn't explain anything clearly. You have to learn and remember tons of things to past tests without even understanding them because he surely didn't know how to teach properly. He didn't respond to emails and gave zero feedback on assignments.
