I never go to office hours but i went to his office hour every time because it was helpful and really fun. He gives clicker questions in lectures as extra credit and at most it could be 20 marks; there are also extra credits on each midterm and final which is very generous. He's very clear in lecture and for grading, every bis 2c is the same.
Tests are very straight forward. Practical was a tad hard thou. He was nice to simplify the info and remove small details. Takes the time to review past material during lecture to make sure we understood it. Gives good amount of EC thru clickers and bonus test questions. Tells funny bis-related traveling stories. Chill and friendly professor.
Great professor! Teaches very well, always available during Office hours and is very passionate about what he teaches!
He is one of the best professor in Davis! He does give us midterm but weekly quizzes. The quizzes all from lectures and learning goals, as long as you go through learning goals and practice quizzes, you will get a super good score. He is also very fun and has lots of stories in the lecture. He gives good feedback and try to remember our names.
Truly incredible professor. I took BIS 2C in summer session and the amount of material you have to get through is insane. He stayed after lecture to answer questions, extended his office hours before quizzes, offered extra credit, and always responded to emails promptly. He wants you to do well, and he'll bend over backwards to help.
Took Ledford in SSII 2016. Really helpful office hours. Grading was fair because of the weekly quizzes and E.C. Final and lab practical are fair but requires a decent amount of prep(mostly from studying for quizzes). Ask TAs for help on lab homework and Ledford for help on lecture material. Study off practice tests and learning goals!
I began SSII with a D because of the first quiz, I told him that I was trying and I couldn't seem to get the grades I wanted with the effort I was putting in. He made office hours with me and had class review sessions. Ended up with an A- in the class. By far the most dedicated bio professor I've had so far.
Super good prof. Clear on material and really tries to help students understand and has a nice sense of humor so lectures aren't super boring. 2 midterms 1 final 1 lab practical. All tests are very fair you just need to know the things he emphasizes. Review for practical! KNOW ALL PLANTS. Tests were mix of mc and short answer. Super recommend!
Professor Ledford is honestly one of the best professors in UC Davis. He cares so much about his students and would go out of his way to prepare his students for the midterm/final. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! It definitely helps, but make sure you don't wait until a week before the midterm to go. His lectures are amazing and clear. TAKE HIS CLASS IF U CAN!
He will never bore you in class. IDK if it was the material or him, but i seriously hated the moment when we had to pack and leave the class. He highlighted the mist important parts of lectures so you wouldn't get confused. Very easy to get a hold of. He really cared about his students and was always open to any kind of feedback.
He is amazing. So nerdy and funny, I don't see how someone could not like him. He is very helpful when you ask for help, tests are challenging but I think fair, lots of EC is offered both on tests and with various assignments/videos. Material for the class is tough and extensive but as a professor, Dr. Ledford is A-1
Ledford is awesome. I'm so glad I got to have him! His lectures are really organized, which makes the difficult material much easier to digest. He's constantly cracking jokes and keeping the class engaged. What would otherwise have been somewhat boring material was pretty cool with Ledford. 10/10 recommend!
Dr. Ledford took what could have been a monotonous class about phylogeny and turned it into my favorite class I've taken yet. Not only is he engaging, funny, and very knowledgeable about the topics, he's also accessible to the students and gives clear explanations/expectations. Plus any teacher that dresses up as a fern gametophyte is an A+ to me!
Dr Ledford gave amazing lectures and occasionally cracks in a joke or two. No curve and solely based off 500 points, but he provides many E.C. opportunities. BIS2C is a lot of work, but I'd say its the most structured class in BIS2 series. Ledford taught phylogeny and plants, while Keen taught animals and microbes. Overall, both very good profs.
Super clear and concise. Also lots of dad jokes that make lecture fun. Would definitely take again. The course itself is great, but there is a lot of subject matter to remember.
I have never met a professor who has stimulated my interest in such a topic that I thought otherwise would have been very boring taught but anyone else. Super clear and concise and makes learning the material super easy and manageable. So much respect for him.
If you can take a class with Dr. Ledford, do it!!! He's one of the best profs I've ever had, if not THE best. He's hilarious, kind, patient, answers any questions you might ask in lecture, accessible outside of class, and his lectures are the best I've seen. They're so clear and organized, I even learned a few things about making good slides!
Attendance is mandatory if u want an A
Overall very knowledgeable, very good lecturer, funny and great personality! but makes the class very hard
One of the best professors I've ever had in UC Davis. Honestly cares about his students and their success, and is hilarious and engaging during lectures. Podcasts were amazingly helpful and provides such a top-notch study guide to help the students succeed. My FIRST rating on rate my professor just because he deserves all these positive recognition
Ledford is easily the best professor I have had at this school. He is one of the few professors left that genuinely cares about the students, is passionate about the material, and finds a way to make every lecture interesting. If you are lucky enough to take hime TAKE HIM.
Ledford is one of the better professors I've had! His lectures have a lot of content (and personally I found it hard to determine what was important during the lectures because he goes quickly) but he makes sure to keep them interesting by making jokes, telling relate stories, or adding videos. You can tell he really cares about his students.
I think i fell in love with him LOL. On a serious note he made a super heavy-material class easy&interesting! Clicker ?'s are usually relevant for exams + he ACTUALLY tells you some questions he'll put on exams during lectures so make sure to pay attention! Midterms and the final were easier than the lab practical!! actually do the study guides!3
Professor Ledford is so funny and caring. He knows the material very well and he takes time to answer your question. I love going to his office hours because you learn so much. His power points are very organized and you can just study the slides for the test. The tests are not that hard it you memorize and understand the lecture. Take him!!!!!!!!!
THIS GUY IS AMAZING. He shows great enthusiasm and appreciation for Biology and it totally rubs off on his students. His lecture style is very engaging and effective. He kept everyone awake and interested; the material isn't super easy but he helps a lot! I would so take his classes over and over again! highly recommend you take his class
I loved this professor! He makes topics much more interesting and there had been many times where the class had gone by so fast from how absorbed one would be in his lectures. He's a fair grader and gives extra credit opportunities too. Would definitely take another class with him and would definitely reccomend him to anyone.
Hes the best. highly recommended. really funny, sometimes in a creepy way. like he says really inappropriate or just generally strange/uncomfortable things sometimes but its usually really funny if you can get past the weirdness. it definitely makes mandatory lectures interesting. bis2c is an easy class so it made it more fun to sit through
Dr. Ledford is daddy. He is so gentile and caring and never makes you feel stupid for asking questions. His lectures are organized and he gives away midterm questions in class ("sounds like a good MT ?"). He is one of the best professors at this university and definitely the best in the BIS 2 series. Do the study guides/questions! TAKE HIM!!!
Funny guy, great lecturer. Attend class for clicker questions and there is no curve for this class. He is very organized and concise on the material you will be tested on.
He's a great guy and makes lecture really fun. He uses clickers a lot, so be sure to show up. Exams are really detail-oriented, but if you pay attention you should do fine. Would definitely take him again!
Ledford is one of my absolute favorite professors at UCD! Definitely go to lecture because his clicker questions save lives! His enthusiasm for teaching is just contagious and it's obvious that he cares about the students and wants them to do well. He's very approachable and will do his best to explain a concept so that you understand it. Take him!
Interesting class with clear lectures and accessible professors. I would recommend attending class for the clicker points and for the opportunity to ask questions but if you're sick all lecture slides and podcasts are posted online. I'd recommend doing the practice questions on canvas to do best on the exams. Don't buy the textbook.
An extremely engaging and straightforward teacher. His lectures are easy to follow and his enthusiasm for the subject makes the lectures very enjoyable. His expectations of students are put forward quite clearly, which makes the class and tests easy to study for. He is certainly one of the best professors I've had.
Out of the entire BIS series, I enjoyed this class the most. Professor Ledford does his best to interact and relate with his students. His lectures were very clear and I learned a lot each time I went to class. A lot of the learning (as I like it) happened in the classroom and outside work was only a reinforcement. There was also extra credit!
By far the best professor I have ever had at UC Davis. BIS2C is probably the hardest out of ABC and he made it so so so easy. Super organized lectures, truly cares about the well being of his students, and you will never leave a class without laughing your ass off. I wish he taught upper div biology :,(
He is honestly the best professor you will ever see. Makes everything he wants you to do very clear, explains all the material how many times you need him to, and wears a fern gametophyte costume every Halloween. He genuinely cares about his students and biology. If you regularly talk to him he will say hi to you on campus even after a whole year.
Honestly I'm sad the quarter is over because I enjoyed his lectures so much... if you have the chance to take him I super recommend! You wont regret it. Everything is super clear and interesting and fair all the way around. Loved BIS 2C.
Good professor, but I'm so happy I'm out of his class. Just a memorization of random facts that you will forget after a week. Lectures are very helpful and clear, but study guides and practice tests are not. Grading is very harsh especially if you explain concepts using your own words.
BIS 2C was more or less memorization. Ledford was cool, though. The final seemed like a Midterm 3 with a few things from Midterm 1/2. Understanding the lecture notes and using past exams (MC/SA) will definitely help. I guess the lab practical was slightly more annoying out of all the given exams. Side note: I already forgot the material.
Ledford is love. Ledford is life. HE SERIOUSLY IS THE BEST MAN TO EVER WALK THIS EARTH BECAUSE HE IS SO ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE OF CLASS AND HE ANSWERS QUESTIONS AND HE TRULY TRULY TRULY CARES! but it was a hard class. I didn't expect it to be so hard. BUT HE IS AMAZING STILL.
Ledford is BY FAR the best professor I have had at this school. I thought I was going to hate BIS2C with all the plants and phylogeny stuff, but I ended up actually finding it so interesting all thanks to him. His two midterms are honestly so straight forward (not like BIS2A/B), although obviously still difficult. TAKE THIS PROF.
Really good professor, but BIS 2C sucks! Animals were so boring and so much random junk to memorize. Tests are straightforward, but free response is graded very harshly. If you miss a key word, you will get 0 points.
Wonderful man and professor... detail oriented exams. More or less memorization of the lecture material.
Ledford is what a college professor should be. He tries his best to help, gives A LOT of resources and extra explanations through youtube videos. BIS 2C has a lot of material that has to do with memorization but not always. Engage yourself in the material and you can get an A. Its easy to fall behind so review lectures/material soon after class.
Best professor I've had thus far at Davis. Excellent and clear lectures and funny too which helps to keep students entertained and engaged. Bis2C is a challenging course with much to memorize but Ledford does a great job connecting concepts and telling a "story" of evolution. Exams are difficult but fair, everything covered in lecture. Do take!!
Sweet and genuine prof. Saw me sitting, stressing about the practical, and he took the time to sit with me, encouraging me, and just LISTENED. Makes otherwise boring material come alive. Still remembered me after the class ended! Class was material-heavy but that's just how BIS 2 is. Definitely take Joel, you'll become a better and happier person.
He is really passionate and super helpful. He takes initiative to help students during his free time. Though I found his MT a bit confusing, sometimes its hard to determine what he is asking for in MT questions. Other than that he is a good professor. Attendance is mandatory!!!
Greatest professor at UC Davis. Passionate, humorous and helpful.
His lectures are great. I like his PPTs a lot, they are very concise and easy to understand. There are a lot of opportunities for extra credit. Will receive great score if you participate in the lectures or listen to the podcast. Mandatory attendance with i-clicker.
Professor Ledford is an extraordinary lecturer, he keeps a class of 300 engaged and interested in the material. His lectures are organized very clearly and thoughtfully. The tests are fair, but relying solely on study guides or the practice exam is not enough although he does hint at material to focus on. Overall one of my favorite bio professors!
Dr. Ledford gives good lectures and conveys a sense of love for the subject. He teaches the content with clarity and in an organized manner. He is very approachable. I would recommend him
A SOLID CHOICE! LEDFORD IS A GEM! i would take the whole bis series with him if i could. very very fair professor and yes the material can be rough but he tries his best to convey the material in a humorous and engaging way. bis 2c sucks since there is a lot of material but ledford makes you start loving plants (not kidding). U WONT REGRET THIS
The greatest professor i've had at UC Davis. The most organized PPT's and nicest personality with an enthusiasm to teach that you will see nowhere else. TAKE HIM, DO IT!
He is a good lecturer with a very interesting sense of humor and personality. I think he did a good job of making the large amount of content all make sense and connect well throughout the class. Tests reflect content taught in lecture.
He is really nice and helpful in OH hours. During exams he has extra OH hours. He does his best to help you learn. Lectures were interesting and well organized. There is a LOT of memorization in this class. You have to put in the work if you want a good grade. He is a great prof. and I highly recommend you take his class if you have a chance.
The best professor I've had at Davis! He makes everything so clear in his lectures and is very straightforward. The tests are super fair. He rides a skateboard and loves flowers. Take him if you have a chance!
Great lecturer, pretty funny guy. He brought us sourdough bread when lecturing about fungi (yeast). Lecture slides are clean and easy to follow. Attendance isn't mandatory but he uses clickers which are worth 25 points total. Cares about his students. Highly recommend trying to get into his class.
Awesome lecturer. His lecture is clear and easy to follow. I enjoyed his lectures. He showed us interesting ( or creepy) videos. He made bread when talking about yeast. He also brought a star shape mat when talking about starfish and dissected a flower when talking about flowers. He is very good at drawing. Clicker questions are graded.
Mere words cannot express how great of a professor he is. He genuinely cares about his student and has tons of OH, especially nearing exams. Lectures are well organized, funny, and easy to grasp. Exams are what you learn in lecture, no trick questions. His jokes and videos were the only thing keeping me going this quarter. He has crazy anecdotes.
Joel is by far the best professor I've had so far. His beautifully organized and engaging lectures were what made winter quarter survivable. He very clearly cared that we do well and always ensured that the material and his expectations were clear. Other professors could learn a lot from Joel. I didn't want the class to end, it was so much fun!
Dr. Ledford was the best biology professor I have had thus far! Lectures were always engaging and entertaining. He made BIS 2C so much fun, it was by far my favorite course. Office hours were always helpful, no trick questions on exams. Clickers are used for participation points in class. Uses learning goals before each lecture too.
An actual legend. His lectures were very interesting, though content heavy (unavoidable, however, for BIS 2C). He knows everything. He also has really weird but engrossing stories from his travels. His youtube videos are really helpful too. Quirky little man, love his edgy skateboard. Def. recommend.
My favorite professor I have had at Davis so far. His teaching style makes you want to show up to class which only helps you learn more. He is hilarious and genuinely cares about his students. The tests are all very fair. He knows all the content and has extensive experience from his studies. 12/10 would recommend.
He was one of my favorite professors at Davis. He's super great at making it clear what you need to know for midterms and the final, and he will put in extra work to help his students.
Hands down the best professor I've taken at Davis! Super captivating lectures, and the material can be overwhelming but he makes it fun to learn and teaches it in a way that you'll remember it. He posts study guides and practice tests which reflect the difficulty level of midterm questions. If possible take Ledford for bis2c you wont regret it!!
Best professor I've ever had in my life. super humorous, interesting lectures combined with funny personal stories, caring, warm, and is willing to help! Offer extra credit and provide good study guides. I hope he teaches all of my courses :(
I got the opportunity to take Ledford for BIS2C this past quarter F19 and it actually made me more interested in the topics that we learned about. Ledford is an amazing teacher who incorporates anecdotes and jokes into his lectures to make them more interesting and it actually helps remember. His lectures are well organized and made it a breeze.
I LOVE THIS MAN. I've been waiting to write this review since the beginning. He is the most amazing and caring prof I've ever had. He managed to make a class that's designed to be boring and terrible into something I looked forward to every week. His tests (2MT&1 final) were so fair it makes me want to cry. Taking BIS2C without him is unimaginable
Dr. Ledford is definitely one of the best professors I've had. He makes lectures about very information heavy topics easy to understand and spends the beginning of each lecture reviewing previous material. Clicker ?s are extremely helpful and often are clues to exam questions. No need to memorize every detail bc he focuses mainly on big ideas.
Joel Ledford is the best lecturer I've ever had. Class is funny, interesting, and he reviews the topics. The clicker and group discussions make it engaging. He gives you all the resources you need, practice midterms, lecture capture, slides, you name it. He also really cares about the students. I wish this review was longer. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
BEST STEM PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD SO FAR. he wants u to do well so he offers easy EC points and he is such a thorough lecturer. I thought I hated biology until I had him as a professor. so nice and approachable. lots of memorization though! exams are fair, lab practical was hard though. lots of clicker questions. take him if u ever can!
He is definitely the best STEM professor that I had so far (like Enderle). He raised my standards for bio profs high given that his tests are extremely fair. His lectures are super organized and his tests truly reflect the learning objectives. He definitely made bis 2C enjoyable!
A true god among men; we are not worthy of his presence. BIS 2C is a very information-heavy class that requires a lot of memorization, but Joel makes it manageable with great lectures and clear expectations from students. He is always receptive to questions and makes sure that the class understands the concepts. Do yourself a favor and take him.
He's a great professor that is good at keeping everyone interested. Fantastic at teaching. Some memorization required but concepts are taught so well you don't even have to question yourself during tests. Great class all around.
The man, the myth, the legend. Dr L is a genuinely good professor and a cool person all around. The lectures are engaging and informative and the workload is fair. He really wants you to succeed and gives you what you need to do well. Overall he's an interesting, organized professor who also just so happens to ride a skateboard and play guitar.
Dr Ledford is a really great professor with a lot of enthusiasm for plants. The class is interesting and well-organized, and the workload is very fair. He posts a lot of helpful review material before tests. I definitely recommend him!
I don't understand how this class is more difficult than Che 118A (organic chemistry) and the entire gen chem series. IT'S AN INTRODUCTORY BIOLOGY COURSE!! If you go to lecture, do the practice exam, study all of the learning goals, and do the readings, you will still do bad. I don't understand how this professor has such a high rating.
Professor Ledford seems nice, but the midterm literally killed my grade. Now I feel that this would be the first time I wont pass a class. I had an A- and after paying attention to lectures and studying nonstop, midterm made my grade plummet to a D-!! A lot of people did poorly on the midterm. He has EC, but dont know how much EC (hopefully lots)
I don't know why people are saying Ledford's class is so awful. Dr. Ledford is such a cool guy and with things being online of course its going to be hard and weird for us all. But Dr. Ledford is incredibly understanding and he is the kind of professor that can give you some peace in times of stress. I highly recommend him he makes plants cool!!!
Dr. Ledford is easily one of my favorite professors. He's passionate, caring, funny, patient, & truly cares about his students. He genuinely takes time to listen to students & makes lectures fun!! The effort that he puts into lectures is phenomenal. I'm privileged to have him as a prof. It's a BIS2C class though, so you'll need to put in the work!
Dr. Ledford has made learning about plants fun and interesting. He even took us on a plant tour via skateboard all over campus. BIS 2C is definitely a lot of information to learn and unpack but he made it more fun and easier to understand. Use the resources offered. Take him if you can!
Professor Ledford is super caring. He takes care of the student's emotions during this very difficult time. He sent us handheld microscopes and seeds for labs, and his lectures are very clear. He is obviously passionate and knowledgable in his area.
Currently taking BIS 2C with Dr. Ledford during Fall Quarter 2020. He's easily the best professor I've ever had! on top of being a generally kind & caring person, he also is/has: 1) great at lecturing 2) super accessible outside of class 3) incredibly organized class structure. Definitely would take any course of his again. :D
Ledford is one of the most amazing professors I've had. He is extremely interactive and answers questions directly on discord. He really insures that his students are set up for success and has extremely fair questions. The man goes above and beyond. His lectures are most enjoyable and the man is so patient. BIS2C is also recorded! <33
Professor Ledford was the best ever! His lectures are super engaging and clear. He tries his hardest to make sure everyone succeeds, including review sessions and videos just to clear difficult concepts. He is very approachable and sweet and always answers questions thoughtfully.
Ledford really made me so happy that I'm in biology. He really cares for his students and wants them to succeed. He even sent out seeds and a microscope to have our own little lab at home because of everything being online. I do study heavily for this class and still have a C+, I study the same amount for this class as my 118A OChem class.
I have a C in this introductory biology course and an A in organic chemistry. Let that sink it. The amount of work and studying I do in this class seems to never pay off! Be prepared to sit in a 3 hour lab with NO BREAKS, spend 2 hours on pre-labs and post-labs only to receive 80% on them and go to the 4 lectures each week.
Hes one of the BIS 2C professors Fall 2020 and he is the sweetest person ever. I really appreciate the little jokes he has when he lectures and he makes everything so clear. I was so prepared for the section on plants. It is a lot of material though but I definitely recommend him
Dr. Ledford is an amazing Bio prof! I didn't do well in his class, but that's my fault. His lectures are very clear and engaging. He gives us many opportunities to ask questions and he's patient when there's a lot. 3 exams and lots of extra credit. I don't like bio, but he made it fun and he treats the students very well.
Ledford is seriously a cool ass professor. But I got to say, those labs literally made me want to rip my hair out. A TON of work and the professors know it's too much and that why they released the assignments days before lab would happen. I would take him again, but he needs to not make those labs so awful
It's a shame I do not like BIS2C cause Prof Ledford was amazing. His slides were beautiful and his lectures amazing. He was even active on discord. He's extremely caring and funny. A solid choice for a professor. He made the class enjoyable for me. I wish I could have him again. Great great great professor!
Ledford was one of the lecturers for Fall 2020. His lecture delivery and slides were very clear and effective. He lectured in such a way that you had a good idea of what concepts would appear on the exams. You definitely had to put in the work to do well in this class but Ledford did his best to set the class up for success. Also easy to reach!
The coolest. I took BIS2C with 3 professors and Dr. Ledford was by far the best of them. He makes difficult material enjoyable. His lectures are concise, which makes studying easier since you know what to focus on. The material itself is hard, but he provides you with funny sayings that help you remember info. I love his crazy stories.
I didn't have any experience with R programming beforehand, but this class was a good intro. 2 hw/week, which took me 2 hrs each but they're not too hard. 2 take-home midterms, but they're fairly easy and he allows you to collaborate with others and gives you a few days to do them. He cares a lot about the students and he's funny.
Took Dr. Ledford for winter quarter and he was an amazing professor! His lectures went a bit slow, which was helpful since he covered a lot of material. Also answered questions and drew diagrams which really helped. Aside from that, he was also funny and really cared about his students. His tests did require a lot of studying, but he was the best.
Dr. Ledford is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is very funny and knows how to teach extremely well. If you are able to take a class with him, then please do. Ledford is AMAZING !
Ledford is super knowledgeable about his subject field and goes in depth with his lectures while also going at a manageable pace. He speaks very clearly and concisely. Make sure you pay attention to the things he emphasizes in lecture, because they will for sure end up on the exam.
Dr. Ledford is a really great professor. His lectures flow very nicely and are easy to understand. He is kind and attempts to really get to know his students. During lectures, he often throws in a lot of poll questions and if you ask questions during lecture, he makes you work to answer it instead of just giving you the answer. Good choice overall.
Don't get me wrong he's a funny and caring guy but will RIP you apart if you ask a question that he considers dumb. He put none of the necessary info on the slide so make sure to pay attention and write everything down. He was also really picky about how he likes his answers so be careful. He was the hardest grader out of the 3 professors.
Lectures with Rodrigues and Bond, all three have of teach well together. The lectures are full of jokes and funny quips at the students and other professors. Lectures are understandable, but occasionally tough. However, they are also full of polls to keep you on track. He definitely was the best out of the three lecturers and was very engaging.
One of the best professors I've had. Manages to make everything in the course fascinating, and never lost my attention during a lecture. The slides were also great to study, and he made the learning goals very clear. Definitely recommend for Bis 2C! (taken fall 2019)
This is my second time taking Dr. Ledford and my unit cap is the only thing stopping me from taking another one of his classes. The lectures are very well organized and easy to understand. Practice reviews/questions during lecture prepare you extremely well for exams. Exams and workload was very fair. 11/10 recommend!
one of the best professors at ucd. amazing lectures and makes it clear what you need to know. pay attention to the things he emphasizes in lectures bc they will be on the exams. take advantage of all the help and practice resources he gives. love how he truly cares for students and motivates us!
Prof. Ledford is honestly such a good teacher, his lectures perfectly cover the type of content we get on homework and exams instead of straying off topic which was super helpful. He's also a very kind spirit and spent a lot of the quarter answering everyones extra questions on discord. U def have to work for ur grade, but he's the prof u want.
Really good lecturer, was a lot of new information but kept the lectures interesting and had some good jokes. Makes you feel like his child with the dad jokes and how caring he was.
Dr. Ledford is so kind and caring toward his students, and you can really see his passion for what he does through his lectures. He is super clear during lectures and his slides are super helpful. His exam questions are fair and he doesn't throw any curveballs at you. Attend lecture, you'll regret not going.
BIS2C has a lot to memorize. However, stay on top of the material will make sure you get an A. Be aware of the presentation!
Pretty good lecturer. Recorded and posted recordings quickly. Made review sessions/videos. Allowed index card cheat sheet. Had decent slides which were posted beforehand. Make sure to read midterm questions carefully.
Fantastic lecturer. His slides were engaging, the information was presented in an easily digestible way, and the bad jokes helped keep the lectures from getting boring. He could get a little annoyed with the students if they weren't very responsive to questions but overall I would take his class again in a heartbeat.
prof. Ledford is the best professor. He speaks slowly to make sure everyone understands concepts. he is very caring, but his exams are difficult. but he gives two extra credits.
One of the best professors on this campus. One of those professors that loves what he teaches, which makes it easy to learn from him. Tests are a little difficult, but he provides a lot of study guides and options beforehand. Absolutely one of my favorite instructors ever.
Great professor, and I took this class with the trio of professors. If you have a chance to take Dr. Ledford, I highly recommend. This class is not curved whatsoever, so be ready.
Succint, clear, & easy to follow lectures. After each lecture he makes sure to review material from the previous lecture. I advise to compile his light bulbs, do the blank paper tests, and true/false questions he gives. He is clear about what he wants you to know & is always ready to answer any questions or clarify a concept.
Joel is amazing! Extremely clear on what is expected of you on the midterms. Lectures were content-heavy, so make sure to study at least two weeks in advance if you want to do well. Has 'light bulb" slides that highlight important information, so you know what to study. Very open to questions. Overall recommend.
Ledford was one of my teachers for BIS 2C. I have struggled in this class but clearly understood the material taught by him. He led an amazing review session for the second midterm and provides awesome study guides. I wish he had been the only teacher of the course. Definitely take Ledford for any BIS class
Dr. Ledford is FOR the students. He truly cares about his students' success, answers any Q's you might have and is passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are clear and concise. He provides helpful learning goals at the beginning of every lesson, and if you can answer them with ease, you will get a good grade in the class.
Ledford is one of the most amazing teachers I have ever had. His lectures and expectations are crystal clear, and he is so passionate. You can tell how much he wants you to succeed, and he makes the class interesting even for those who aren't fans of biology. I absolutely loved this class--take him if you can!
He is such a great professor, super caring, and so available for help. I was completely new to R and coding in general and this class was a incredible introduction and taught me so much. One complaint would be that it is a decent amount of work given the few units it is. Ledford is such a great professor though and so genuine!
I loved Ledford, his lectures were super clear and he's great at explaining things. There's just so much info in this class it can be super overwhelming, just make sure you check up on past material throughout the quarter, or it will leave your brain by finals.
Super awesome professor. He cares a lot about your learning and gives you a really good idea of what he wants you to know. Very engaging lectures and makes effort in how he teaches (not just saying facts at you). Highly recommend. A lot of material but he teaches it the best.
Dr. Ledford's lectures were very clear and digestible. He took time at the beginning of each lecture to review the previous lecture, which was super helpful. And his review sessions were helpful as well. He does grade his midterms very specifically, so make sure to memorize exactly what he wrote in the lecture slides.
Best professor I ever have so far at Davis. He's the best professor of all three and he's the only person that I know so far that know how to teach.
This was a really good class for learning how to use R for data science. There were some confusing moments but overall I learned a lot from this class and it wasn't super difficult either, granted I had previous experience in R. It'll be more difficult for those who don't know R already but the start of the class goes slow so it'll be fine.
I loved Professor Ledford. He was very engaging in lectures, and made me genuinely interested in the subject he was teaching. It feels like he genuinely cares for our success, and the class is very straightforward.
Ledford was my favorite bis2 prof, his lectures were engaging and clear, and although this class is information overload, he made it as good as he could. I took him with Keen, and they both tried to make it known, in a roundabout way, what the free response part of exams would be about, so that's nice. Definitely take him if you can!
I love Professor Ledford! His section on animals was my favorite of BIS2C. He did a great job breaking down an incredibly difficult topic, and he had great energy. He really cared about his students and engaged the class with participation. He is very enthusiastic about biology and provided lots of study resources and answers to questions.
The material of the course is beyond interesting and presented in a clear way. The course is fun and never gets dull but it does require a fair bit of effort studying to pass. They provided good study guides, thoroughly answered questions, and held review sessions before exams, but ultimately what you put in, you get out.
Amazing lecturer! He uses iClicker questions for bonus points to encourage students to come to class instead of just watching the recordings. Sure, this influenced me to attend live, but I also just find myself looking forward to going to his class. Lecture material is very well organized and it's very clear what you're expected to know for exams.
Good lectures, material comes at you very fast so it can be hard to keep up
Ledford doesn't need another 5/5 review because he is simply amazing. I know what y'all are here for so: exams are very fair (bis2c is a lot of memorization no matter who you take) so as long as you're good at memorizing you'll ace everything. Labs are a bit longer than 2b labs which is annoying but doable and the instructing team is very helpful.
Dr. Ledford was a great professor. The lectures were organized perfectly and he kept them entertaining! The clicker questions are also a great way to get easy extra credit. The content is interesting but easy to fall behind.
I love Joel. He is passionate about the subject and cares about his students, the structure of the class is very organized and straight forward. Going to lecture is so worth it, he does iClicker questions that are helpful for learning the material and you get extra credit. Best professor ever, 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Ledford is the best professor I've had at Davis so far. BIS2C is very heavy on content and memorization but I never felt overwhelmed because the class was so organized, there were so many resources to study from, and Ledford was such an amazing lecturer. Highly recommend!
Dr. Ledford is such a gem. His exams are fair and he gives great practice before hand. iClicker questions in class for extra credit, but you'll want to attend his lectures anyways because he's so special. He always has fun stories, facts and videos that makes the content easier to connect with. Take advantage of his office hours. He's so caring :)
I physically cannot express how amazing Dr. Ledford is. Lectures are clear, and you always know what you'll be tested on. Lots of EC, especially for going to lecture, and the lectures go by super fast since they're so much fun. Labs are decent, but still interesting. I would fail Bis 2C just so I can have Dr. Ledford as my professor again.
I never write reviews but Professor Ledford deserves a 1000/5. He's hands down the best professor I've had in my 14 years as a student! His lectures are very well organized and he's hilarious. He genuinely cares about his students and everything he does is sincerely out of benefit for us. Very accessible, caring, & respected. Highly recommend!
The best professor at this school. His lectures are clear, engaging, and organized. He truly cares about his students and provides lots of resources to help every student succeed not just in this class but in college. I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to take this class with him.
AWESOME! Just take Ledford if you can. His class was outstanding and extremely well-organized. Truly cared about teaching his students things that were important. Tests were as expected, lectures were informative without being too much. Lots of review and extra credit options. Very cool dude and very fun class/class environment.
Professor Ledford is a really good lecturer. He is passionate about the topics he teaches and always tries to engage with students. He offers 16 points of extra credit if you participate using iClicker. The tests are pretty hard because they are mostly memorization based, but he tries to review the material as much as he can.
Really inclusive class policies made it so I didnt need to even use accommodations for my chronic illness. Felt respected as a student and like Dr. Ledford was approachable and believed in my success. Exams were extremely fair and if you study and utilize class resources, you will succeed. Iclicker for extra credit really helped solidify concepts
Ledford is my favorite professor. He made lectures engaging and provided iClicker extra credit for showing up. Provided lots of practice material that heavily matched midterms. No surprises on exams. Dropped lowest midterm score. Most labs were easy but boring. You can really tell he cares about his students.
Ledford often tells dad jokes but is a great lecturer nonetheless. He is very caring and is often times talking to students within the first four rows before he starts lecture. He really does care about his students and tries his absolute hardest to make sure everyone understands the topic before moving onto the next one.
One of the sweetest professors. The lectures were very enjoyable and even the generous amount of extra credit incentive is not needed to want to attend. He really does care about our success. Dr. Ledford was active on the Discord server answering students' questions. I'm sure we'll all miss him after this quarter.
I think that labs could have been structured in a much better way, a lot of the time I didn't get to digest the info and could only focus on finishing the labs. Besides that, the professor was a great and fun lecturer. The material isn't hard to digest, have to study a fair amount though! Uses iClicker for attendance. Exams are pretty easy.
He's perfect! Just take him
His teaching style is amazing and he provides so many resources to get better acquainted with the material.
I love Professor Ledford! He's super funny and a great lecturer and explains concepts really well. Definitely reccomend!
Best teacher in BIS 2C, teaching really clear and all questions are from the lecture.
He is so much better than the other two lecturers for BIS 2C. His lectures were super clear and he would tell you which parts of the lecture are important for exams. His midterm was super easy, and he provided a lot of review materials. He even gave us extra practice for final. I would definitely recommend him.
man, what a great guy, he made me love plants, that's all i can say, thank you :)
My favorite of the three BIS 2C professors, any material from his lectures that showed up on the tests was explained over and over, and his lectures on the plants section was really well done. Lab practical was tough but I think that's on the lab director not the lecture professors. Tough class but the material from his section was fair.
The best Bis2c Professor by far - he taught the plant portion and made me love plants! He cares so much for students and provides lots of practice material. There was a lot of content but he made everyone motivated to learn. Very hard - 2 midterms, 1 final, 1 lab practical. Labs sucked and always took 3hrs. Super organized and informative course.
Good lecturer, mainly covering Plantae. A bit unorganized but overall pretty nice. Make sure to review from time to time otherwise the phylogenetic tree of plantae can be a bit going everywhere.
He was an amazing lecturer even though he covered the hardest content in BIS 2C. To succeed in BIS 2C, one needs to rewatch every single lecture and take handwritten notes. It will help remember the tough content much easier. Ledford was amazing when it came to lectures and made the tough content understandable. Great Professor :)
Professor Ledford is the BEST professor I have taken at davis so far. He is so knowledgeable about the subject matter and his lectures are so interesting and engaging. His is straightforward and doesn't throw curveballs in the midterms or final. The class isn't easy, you have to work to get your A.
He made learning about plants extremely interesting. Nice
The class was co-taught with two other professors; Dr. Ledford made learning about plants really fun! He engaged with the students a lot, especially during the clicker questions. He cares a lot and is very optimistic and supportive in telling us that we'll do great. The lectures were well organized; practice exams are a great reflection.
gives little lightbulbs on his slides for things that we need to focus more attention on, very clear in his lectures so make sure to pay attention in lectures, material is really complicated and hard but you will be able to understand it if you fully get the full picture, definitely could get an A if I just put more time into the material.
Ledford taught about plants in BIS 2C. His lectures were clear to understand, and he made sure to point out concepts that may appear on the tests, which made it easier to study.
Good news: Dr.Ledford is an amazing lecturer who try his best to explain things. He makes funny metaphors and demonstrates with live specimen to us. He's also accessible outside of class. Bad news: The class requires a lot of memorizations and though the professor is excellent the difficulty is still high.
His lectures are pretty straight forward and his slides have a lot of the information being said which makes it easier to copy down. In addition he also has little lightbulb on slides which he would put on his midterms which is very helpful since you will know what to study for. His midterms are tricky since they ask for the best answer.
He is one of my favorite professor that I have had at UCD so far. I really enjoyed the way he taught and how clear he made the content of the class.
This man absolutely deserves all the high ratings.
Ledford is one of the sweetest, most caring professors I've ever had. He genuinely cares about all his students and is super passionate about what he does. I loved all his lectures, and his exam content was fair. Although BIS2C was a challenging course, I walked away with a great appreciation for plants due to Ledford's teaching style!
If you can, take his class. He is super nice and talks to students before class to get to know them as people. I'm not super interested in plant bio but he made it interesting by having amazing lectures. Plus, he is super clear about what is going to be on the tests and answering questions to ensure that students are best prepared. Take his class!
Prof. Ledford is a great lecturer! He structures the class material very well, highlights the important topics, gives exercise clicker problems in lectures, and reviews difficult concepts multiple times. He is very kind and approachable, taking his class was a great experience and I enjoyed learning from him.
Prof. Ledford was extremely funny, approachable, and enthusiastic about plants. All of his slides were extremely well organized, drawing out plant life cycles with the class was very engaging, and bringing live plant samples all added to a wonderful learning experience. 0 hw, readings are assigned, not necessary but helpful. Classes are recorded
I was a bit nervous going into this class with very little R studio experience, but professor made it super fun to learn. Class consists of 2 homework assignments each week which take less than a hour to complete and a group project to explore a dataset. Overall easy class but still end up learning a great amount of stuff. Would 100% recommend.
THIS MAN DESERVE THE WORLD
professor was so nice, was very organized in his lectures and was easy to follow. Readings are recommended, but not necessary, you'll do good if you make phylogenies on paper like he tells you to.
Ledford was an amazing professor. BIS 2C is very tough but Ledford has the easiest section. He has clear and organized lectures, thorough study guides, and straightforward tests. He prepares you well for the midterm and if you study, you will do well. It will seem like a lot of info at first but he makes it simple and easier to understand.
I took BIS 2C along with Ward and Rodrigues and the class is challenging, but Ledford is a great lecturer. The grading system is incredibly tough especially the exam format. It was all multiple choice and T/F but weighted very heavily. Lots of memorization. Its a doable class but get ready to learn about plants and animals.
BIS2C is a tough course but if you can memorize a crazy amount of content then you will do fine. Ledford had the best lectures by far. Rodriguez was fine and Phillip Ward sucks bad. Don't get behind, make flashcards, set aside plenty of time to study, don't underestimate the lab practical like I did. Moves fast but lectures are recorded.
Was a nice professor. He cared but I struggled with the content. There was no homework which I think caused me to fall behind. Most of your grades are midterms and finals. All that is put into the grades beside the lab. He did expect you to read but I didn't and I still did well.
records every lecture/ discussion. made a kahoot for us. really funny guy. his exam questions were the best. he's repetitive with info to really make sure you know it. not many words on his slides though so you have to listen. really good for visual learners. very encouraging and kind. assigns a lot of textbook reading though.
Best lecturer in BIS 2C! Entertaining, funny, and clear lectures that make the material easy to grasp and absorb. Very helpful during office hours and loves helping students. Very good at using diagrams and picture resources during lecture.
Ledford is a great person and professor! BIS2C is a hard course but I really feel like his lectures made the content easier to digest. Lectures are easy to follow, and his slides are clear and even highlight what can be on the tests. One of my favorite professors at UC Davis.
Prof Ledford loves what he does and is a great lecturer because of it. I went to one of his office hours and he was helpful at explaining the stuff I was confused about. He teaches all the lectures on plants in bis2c, which is a big part of the labs and basically all of midterm 2.
terrible
I really liked him! He seemed nice and the lectures were clear. I think he said he used to teach middle school (?) and you can kind of tell sometimes but not in a bad way, it's just kind of funny. He makes sure that people are understanding what he is saying. Class is a lot of memorization but not his fault.
Professor Ledford is caring and a very clear lecturer and grader. He is passionate about what he teaches and always takes questions. Take him if you can!
Prof Ledford is a great lecturer who makes the material engaging and easy to understand. His slides are clear, and he uses visuals effectively. The class is challenging but manageable with the help of resources like Unstuck study, which I found really helpful for study prep.
Very good lecturer but his exams are so fixated on the smallest of details. However, his exam questions make the class harder than it needs to be. Also he's very helpful during office hours but again, he cares heavily about the details which in turn would make the class a memorization class.
Professor ledford is really funny and down to earth. The exams are some what difficult but that is because the class covers a vast amount of material. Overall, he makes lectures very interesting and is an extremely fair professor as he will remove questions from midterms if they were unfair or if too many people got it wrong.
I usually don't write reviews, but definitely have to for him. I have him as a TA/Instructor for PLB105, and he is amazing. He is very caring about his students and their success. I struggled a lot in this class but he gave me advice and confidence to complete the course, and without him I definitely would have been in a worse situation. Thank you!
He was my lab instructor for PLB105 this quarter and its very clear how much he cares about us and believes in our abilities. Very clear in his expectations, funny, and an overall great guy! He held review sessions before the lab exams that were very helpful and made it much easier to excel in the course :) I highly recommend!
HE IS THE GOAT. VERY CALM. VERY DEMURE. VERY MINDFUL. He is patient, his lectures are very well organised, perfect for visual learner's. As a person who had zero interest to learn about plants, I now have developed an interest for plant research. Exams are memorisation based, and focused on the minute details.
Dr. Ledford is hands down the best biology professor I have ever had. He explains the plantae part of BIS 2C super well. The way he teaches is very clear, and straight to the point. I totally recommend him!
cares about his students a lot :) great lecturer all around and made plants (which was a lot of memorization) a lot more bearable. funny too!!!
Super clear slides and lectures. Class is straight memory but he made it easier with how he organized his half of the class. IClickers for points every lecture and labs were graded harshly but Ledford was a king.
Great lectures, easy to follow. Dry humor and would put you on the spot in office hours, so he can be a bit intimidating at first (he's just trying to help though). Really wants students to succeed, even joined the bis2c discord server to provide extra help. MTs were good if you studied, final had 8 points EC. iClicker Q's could be difficult.
Dr. Ledford is just incredible honestly! He actually TA'd the lab for this course and will be teaching the whole course in the future. His lectures for lab were amazing though and he was so helpful! He cares so much about his students and is very passionate about the subject. I would highly recommend taking his class! You won't regret it! :)
Dr. Ledford is excellent at explaining content and has well organized slides. The class is memorization heavy so the exams were overwhelming with the amount of content we needed to know. Labs were harshly graded and lab practical was difficult as well. Despite difficulty, Ledford and Keen tried their best to make the information understandable.
Professor Ledford is an excellent biology lecturer. All of his lectures are incredibly engaging and easy to follow along to. Tests are generally pretty fair - all multiple choice and based off of content from lecture. The class is heavy on memorization but as long as you can handle memorizing a decent amount of content, you should be fine.
he is a king! course content is a Lot to memorize and study sometimes, but he's a great prof with great slides that made everything very clear upon reviewing.
Great professor! The lecture material is a lot to memorize, but Ledford and Keen do their best to teach it clearly. The lecture slides are very well-organized and the iClicker questions are heavily reflected on the exams. He cares a lot for the students too, and he's fun to talk to during office hours!
iClicker questions make attending lectures mandatory for the most part.. 2 midterms and then a final (notecard to use on all). He was nice to talk to and I enjoyed the lectures that he got to do. a lot of content to study
Ledford was an engaging lecturer with effective slideshows
LOVE HIM! He's so funny & his lectures are super entertaining. There are iclickers (min amount you have to get right for full points), and you get a flashcard on all the exams. A lot of memorization is required (especially for lab practical), but it was all pretty interesting. Harder than bis2b but honestly more interesting, especially w/ ledford.
Great prof, study for the second midterm more than you would think. The first midterm was easy but the second one is difficult and a lot of work.
Professor Ledford was very funny in his section of BIS2C! His diagrams helped me understand some of the tougher content and his iclicker questions represented test questions fairly well.
Very caring, will answer questions quite well, and he's fun to talk to
He actually cares about his students def recommend him
Lots of lecture content, but made up for in cheat sheet for exams. Favorite lecturer out of the trio, helps solidify information with diagrams, emphasizes what you need to know for exam. Provides review kahoots. Lectures made a bit more enjoyable with Ledford's personality. Found it much easier to remember plant section content with Ledford.
he definitely grew on me as the quarter went on! he really does want his students to succeed and made great lecture slides and practice tests. the plantae material was just a lot to process in general, but he did make it easier to understand. (just make sure to put a good amount of time into this class - very content heavy)
Great professor! This is the best professor I've had so far at UC Davis. His lectures are engaging, super helpful, and he's just so good at his job. The iClicker thing might be a bit of a pain for some people, because I'm not a big fan of going into lectures. But trust me, if you take this guy, you won't regret it.
I think his section was okay. He made a lot of drawings and diagrams that we had to memorize. I liked when he made us kahoots to study for midterms for a few class periods, that was fun. He gets a little offended if not enough people participate in his in-class questions. He is sassy in a funny way. His lectures were not my favorite, but it was ok.
Ledford is the best of the three professors who teach this class. He is funny, passionate, and well-organized. Along with lecture slides, he also brings in example of what we are learning about. He is so soft-spoken that it was surprising to learn that he was in the military. He makes Kahoots before midterms, which are both fun and very helpful.
co taught with Ward, Rodrigues. Ledford teaches all the endosymbiosis + plant stuff. Makes it really interesting and fun to learn! Did kahoots too, helpful diagrams, breaks down confusing concepts really well. Also for some reason he has a really off putting aura but I guess he's just that chill honestly. My favorite of the three.
Absolutely AMAZING. Clean and organized lectures and hilarious jokes. Would do kahoot review and give out prizes (his own artwork). Many questions on the kahoot/ in lecture/ practice exam were similar to actual test questions. There are times when people just applause at the end of his lecture because they are honestly so enjoyable and helpful.
Honestly this professor deserves his rating, really great teacher. Lectures are great, great pacing, not too hard to pick up. Tests def need studying, but interesting content and he's supportive. His kahoots are incredibly helpful. I will say there are limited practice tests.
Professor Ledford is an outstanding instructor(arguably the best biology professor I've had at Davis), and provides great explanations of material during lecture. His enthusiasm is very easily recognized, and he is always happy to help students.
Great lectures and loves to answer questions. Is very responsive to students and their needs. Caring and good at teaching!
He's the first professor i've known to stop the whole course schedule to redo a lecture BY HAND to make sure people understand the course concepts! SUPER amazing in lecture and in OH! He prioritizes student well-being and understanding SO MUCH! TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE. Review his learning objectives/practice exams and you'll be fine!
LOVED him!! He was VERY thorough with content and made sure everything made sense. He went out of his way to make Kahoots and spent a whole lecture reviewing material even tho it went off his schedule. Truly a one of a kind professor
Great great great professor! He explains the concept so well and thoroughly. While plants can seem boring and a lot of memorization Dr.Ledford make it interesting in the best way possible! My honor to be in BIS2C with him.
Dr. Ledford is a great professor for BIS2C! His slides are well organized and he provides plenty of reviews, practice, and help learning the vast material on plants and phylogenies. He even removed one of the lectures and instead did a review session after hearing from students that they were struggling on the material before the midterm.
