Dr. McNeal was an awesome professor! His lecture outlines were helpful for the tests and there was no need to read the book other than to clarify something you didn't understand from lecture. Lecture wasn't boring because he had witty comments the entire time. I would recommend him!
He is a very nice teacher! His lectures were early but it is very easy to make an A in the class if you go. The way he presents the material is easy to understand and he always has a few jokes to make lecture more interesting. Take him if you can and don't buy the textbook!
He is really nice and really helpful. He makes lots of jokes that are kind of funny. His tests are straightforward. If you study your notes, you'll be fine. The book is helpful for things you don't understand. The labs are boring and seem kind of pointless but that's the department's fault not his. Overall, great professor!
He is an awesome professor! He in genuinely interested in most of the material he teaches and he explains it well. He is very helpful and his tests come word-for-word from his notes. It's a lot of material, but he does a great job!
He is an amazing professor, very interested in what he is teaching and gives very interesting examples in class. All that is needed is to look over the notes and ask him any questions if you are confused about anything. I loved his class and he actually made plants seem interesting, something that I didn't know was possible. Take him!! :)
Take him!!! Dr. McNeal is a great professor! The fact that he is genuinely knowledgeable and passionate about the course material makes his lectures interesting and rewarding! The tests cover a lot of information, but memorize the lecture notes that he post online and you'll do fine. Like literally his tests are verbatim from the lecture notes.
TAKE HIM!!!!! His lectures are very clear and he gives u a study guide priot to test and exam. He is AWESOME!! Best Biology proff at KSU!!!
Dr. McNeal's lecture is entertaining and easy to understand. He provides everything to students via posting his powerpoints online and that is what he tests students on; however, the lab reports are graded much tougher than they should be (he doesn't grade them though).
Dr. McNeal is such a pleasure to listen to, he is truly knowledgeable on the subject. He makes class entertaining and interesting, he doesn't use the textbook, only refers to figures in the book. He posts outlines after each lecture and gives study guides! He is a great professor and I would recommend him any day! Study for exams in advance.
Best biology teacher at KSU. His lectures are entertaining and insightful. He posts notes online after lecture and a study guide before tests. Lab is more difficult though.
good teacher. Lectures are entertaining. Tests are directly from his notes which he posts online. The tests are fairly detailed and you usually have to memorize/learn a lot of information. Easy class for me though. Take him. I learned a lot
Dr. McNeal gives very good and clear lectures. The course itself is not too terribly difficult as along as you put effort into it and attend the lectures.
Great professor! He's really smart and knows just about everything about plants. He doesn't use a book at all but puts his notes on his website. His humor is very dry and a lot of people don't get it, but I think he's hilarious. Pay attention, show up to class, study his notes, and you'll get a good grade.
He makes lectures entertaining. His tests are very easy if you review what he expects you to know in detail (he posts word files of his powerpoints as well as an overall study guide for basic knowledge). attendance is mandatory (uses Iclicker2) and if you are late or leave early you lose points. But attendance is only worth 25 pts of 525 possible
Dr. Mcneal is a great professor. Easy to pay attention to in lecture and helpful in office hours. His tests are based off his lecture notes and theyre fair. It's so much information though so you need 2 or 3 nights to study for them. He also uses iclicker for attendence pts. Good prof. and easy if you study. (I'm a very avg. student.)
Great lecturer! He keeps it interesting and makes corny, but hilarious jokes almost every class. He made all topics interesting and he also sticks to his lectures for testing material. You will get a good grade if you go to class and take notes and study from those! Would love to take him again if I could.
Very cool professor. Lectures are punctuated with humor and are extremely useful for tests. The tests are not too difficult if you study the lecture notes and pay attention in class. You get 25 points from in class participation from the iClicker, and if you go to class and study properly for the tests, it should be a clear A class.
Makes the lectures interesting with funny picturesjokes. However, rushes though body function unit making it impossible to take all your notes. Get attendance points for using iClicker during class. Used iClicker for tests. 4 Tests & Final. Tests are kinda tricky, there is just a TON of information for each test. No book, all class & online notes
Dr McNeal is awesome. One of my favorite prof so far. He is funny and is very knowledgeable. You can tell he is very enthusiastic about plants. I really liked this class. He gives study guides for the tests which all of the info is in ppt but you should also take notes on the ppt. Fill study guides out in detail and you'll get an A
Dr. McNeal is hilarious. He has a dry and corny sense of humor which he balances with his extensive knowledge of biology. You do have to study as some concepts are just tough. He includes lecture outlines and study guides. Attendance is i-Clicker but its only a small part of the grade. If you need help ask questions or use office hours. Great prof.
Dr. McNeal is awesome. I did have him for an 8am but only skipped like 3 classes the whole semester because your "participation grade" is answering clicker questions in class. He makes jokes the whole time. His tests are pretty hard but he gives study guides for each of them and as long as you study that in-depth you'll be fine.
Overall easy class, there is a lot of material covered for each test, gives a study guide, you dont need a book. He uses iclicker for participation and tests. Go to class, do the studyguide, and study the notes in detail. Should be an easy A.
McNeal is an AMAZING Biology professor if you enjoy dry, and kinda awkward humor like I do. He loves his job and biology and is really enthusiastic about the subject. I would take him again. He's very helpful and responds to emails quickly. Don't ask for wiggle room on grades though, he's is very strict about that. Overall one of the best at KSU
This class is hard. I love biology and I struggled. If you don't study A TON then you will not pass. Attendance is good chunk of grade, saves people not doing well on exams. Study guides are long and extremely detailed, but if you memorize them you will ace the tests. 4 tests and a final. None dropped. VERY BORING lecturer.
He's one of the best teachers at KSU so far. If you like teachers that give you real world examples and is very enthusiastic about the material, he's the one for you. I would take any other course he taught. His tests were mostly straight forward, study guides are provided and no homework. He was very fair on our final exam. Get him & love Boobies!
Awesome instructor! Welcomes questions. If you follow his study guide for exams you'll make an easy B. However, it is a lot of material and lectures are long so be prepared to study hard especially when you get into phylogenetic trees!!!
In the lab you never actually meet the professor, there is a TA there each week instead, so I don't know how he is but the class itself is fairly easy. Very straightforward, only one test (pig practical) and 5 lab reports total. Highly recommend this class.
He is adorable I love him! He so genuinely loves science and reawakened my passion for it as well. If you miss anything he posts an overview online. He loves photography and most of the images he shows in class are his own. Super amazing I totally recommend him. Just make sure to keep up the amount of info can get overwhelming.
Out of 525 total points: 3 exams at 100pts each, participation (iclicker ?s) 25pts, and a cumulative final at 200pts. Don't even touch the book. Go to class and listen. Read the lecture outlines he gives and use them to fill out the study guides. It'll be an easy A. He's really into parasitic plants and birds so he spends more time on those.
This guy is great! He's likely silly funny and really knows his stuff so it's great at explaining topics. His tests are relatively easy if you study the material and the only other grade is attendance which isn't too bad. He posts his lecture notes d2l which is a life saver for studying and that way you don't need the book! highly recommend him
Great lecturer. Though the content may be boring and hard, he's great at explaining things and tries to work in jokes here and there to lighten the mood.
I took this specific professor because he had such good rating, but it is all a lie. His class is based on 3 exams, clicker questions, and a cumulative final which is weighted double the other exams. The first test is easy enough but the second and third tests are not. My class average for the second two tests were 68's and he didn't curve.
Loved him as a lecturer, hated him as a test-maker. His tests were extremely specific even though he provided a study guide. I would take his class again just for the fact that he was hilarious, but for an entry level science class, he made you work for it.
AVOID! He doesnt teach the lab his graduate students teach the lab and they do not even teach it! They proctor the lab and you have to teach yourself. You cannot use any resources or work with your lab partner during the experiments. You only have 4 assignments and if you mess up on one you fail the lab! Take another professor!
Three exams, one final and attendance matters but don't go in there just to click in your answers for the points. You are going to want to download the notes he provides and actually PAY ATTENTION. He gives you everything you need to pass his exams. Yes it is a whole lot of material but if you study his notes regularly and in advance, you'll pass.
He's a great professor and cares about students. He explains stuff really well. There is a lot of info to memorize for each exam but it is doable if you start early! Do not study only the night before you will struggle! IF YOU PUT EFFORT YOU WILL GET A OR B. He gives bonus points at the end. Hes always in his office hours if you need help!
He has TAs teaching his lab but they are super easy to do!! Few reports to do and pig practical. Should be an easy A if you follow the rubrics no matter which TA you get. If you get less than A, you should not be in college bcause this is one of the easiest classes!!! People who got bad grades are due to not following directions, plain and simple
his notes & test outlines are very doable but when it comes to the test.. it is way too detailed for the information he gives us. He "teaches" through powerpoints of the bold concepts and spend majority of his time on pictures & jokes that aren't necessary to pass his exams. He does not curve at all. 3 tests 100 each, a final, 200 pick someone else
This class can be an easy A/B if you follow the study guides and re-read the notes because his exams are based off just that. There is a lot to remember, however, the test questions are simple compared to previous teachers I've had. No hw or quizzes. Attendance is technically mandatory for participation points.
He's hilarious. Not many grades in his class, only attendance, 3 exams, and the final exam. He's a very fair professor, just study a little everyday and pay attention to the study topics he gives out for each exam and the lecture outlines.
Class is hard because there is 13-20 chapters per test so loads of information to remember!! Made C in class and im A student. Kinda disappointed because i thought I would do way better but test questions were soooo specific and there's no other grades but tests finals and 25 pts for attendance... He's nice prof just hard class.
Dr. McNeal is great!! He gives good lectures, is hilarious, and grades very fairly. Assignments help you learn. I definitely recommend.
Natural history of Georgia! Hes real punny.
Attendance is not mandatory but it is definitely needed to pass. Test are lecture based. Multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer test. Nice guy but kinda intense.
The labs are led by TA's and the TA I had was Miranda Gulsby. If you can DO NOT take her. She is a hard grader and is not specific on what she is looking for in lab reports. I repeat avoid her at all costs. I am an all A student but had my first B in her lab class.
Dr. McNeal is a good professor and really knows his stuff. his tests are pretty detailed so make sure you memorize everything from the lecture outlines. there are only 3 tests with a cumulative final. its not an easy A but it can be done!!!
He's a good professor and comes off as a sweet guy, but I don't like his exams. It isn't all multiple choice (it has fill in the blank, free response, matching). There's no homework either which sucks because your grade is solely based on your performance on exams. I honestly didn't enjoy the class as much as I wish & would recommend someone else.
Only 4 test none are dropped or replaced. Test are very detailed. The course is over 34 chapters and the final is cumulative. It is a lot of material for each test.
Cool guy, but majority of your grade comes from tests. Cant have a bad day and not do well on a test or itll haunt you at the end
Dr. McNeal is a very nice person, BUT when it comes to grades and test, he is literally the worst. The class is made up of 3 test and final. His test are way too specific. Even if he made it open note, you still wouldn't get a 100. On one test, a lot of people failed and he gave us a 3 point curve like that was going to help.
Dr. McNeal is a great guy, but his class is only based on three tests and a final exam. He spends about half of the lecture time talking about a picture he took of some animals or plants. Even if you study the in and outs of every single powerpoint and take great notes, his tests are so specific that it will be difficult to get a good grade.
BEWARE if you take his lab, his TA's teach it and they can be harsh graders. I had Olivia who was really good and explained things really well, but I ended up not doing well on the manuscripts which dropped my grade despite doing well on the practical.
Dr. McNeal is a nice guy. However, is lectures are so long, even he admits they can be boring. If you don't pay close enough attention, you'll miss small points that end up being questions on his exam. His study guides aren't very helpful either. Make sure you go to class though for the participation points, which are now 20% of the grade.
Mcneal is a caring, funny, and knowledgeable professor. All the material on the tests are found on the review notes he GIVES YOU. He's a genuine guy who really just wants people to learn. Definitely recommend for anyone interested in learning bio and being able to have great notes to look back on. Wouldn't recommend if you just want an easy A
This guy is great. He loves what he teaches and is so funny. Textbook isn't necessary for the class which I really liked. The study guides given are literally the golden ticket to doing well on the exam. I'd say it's an easy B class and then as long as you keep up with the material during the semester it's a pretty easy A.
He tends to talk about one thing too much, but as long as you read the lecture outlines he posts, youll do great on the exam. Has participation with polls in class to count towards your grade if it helps. NO homework or quizzes. Just exams. Has group projects over research papers (presenting what its about to the class).
Bio lab was all online. Labs were easy. A few manuscripts that were graded much heavier.
Dr. McNeal knows his stuff and is a true biologist. He rambles sometimes, but he genuinely offers interesting info in his ppts. He offers lecture outlines that prepare you well for the tests. No homework or quizzes. Graded on 3 exams, final, and a group presentation. Also uses poll questions in bb collaborate as participation points. Solid choice.
I had McNeal for BIOL1108 and did not like him at all, however, he has definitely grown on me. There is something great about watching someone talk about something they are passionate about, and he loves biology. He finally became self-aware about his monotone voice and is working on it. Also, he is an understanding grader and curves occasionally.
Took him for 1108 and really enjoyed it, so I took him again for Evolution. Wasn't disappointed, the class was really interesting and built a lot on BIO 1108, 3300, and 3370. Got a B because one low test grade so make sure to study. Wish he taught all the Ecological and Evolutionary Bio courses to be honest.
Im so confused with all these positive reviews? Mcneal is known for giving HORRIBLE tests: long and precise. Hes monotone and boring and DOES NOT give in-class reviews because everyone studies differently. Gives kahoot for participation, goes on tangents that you dont even know are important- hard for no reason. AVOID! Dont take Dovid either.
McNeal is one of the most passionate professors I have ever had. If anyone says his lectures are boring then they just do not care about the topics. Tests are very specific but as long as you keep up with lecture outlines, you will be fine. Doesnt use the textbook and provides everything you need to pass. Daily Kahoot for participation.
Do not take this professor unless you want to never know what you'll have in the class. We have been done with this lab except for the final manuscript for 2 weeks & we still only have 3 grades out of 9 total things graded. He is a really hard grader, & says only deadline he will follow to have grades in is the final grades one set by the school
Really a nice professor who tries to entertain with memes and jokes in lecture. Tests aren't that bad & if majority miss a question he returns points. I did the bare minimum by showing up to class, took notes, and studied a day or so before exams & got a B+ put in effort and you can definitely have an A. 3 exams, easy project, participation &final
Tests & final make up about 80% of ur grade. 1 question per lecture made up participation points. There was a group project given at the very end of the semester; kind of annoying but he graded leniently. Tests are long & specific, but he drops questions that majority of class misses which helps a lot. Dr. McNeal is perfectly nice and approachable.
If you took him for other classes, know that this will be the most difficult one of all because the content is extreme memorization. Incredibly fun. Study a lot, and do not take on a full schedule. Don't procrastinate on the dichotomous key. Know every fun fact about each plant, the formulas, and the food. (Way easier than plant morphology)
Professor McNeal is a very caring but shy professor, a lot of people are saying that he is boring during lectures (which yea he kind of is) but he is also giving amazing information. He basically tells you everything that is expected of you and is very passionate about his job and the studies he does. Overall I really like him as a professor.
He is a very laid back and nice guy. Try to attend all classes but if you cant, just email him. there are a couple of projects so get ready to get creative and work together. The class was very fun actually. 10/10
Only 4 tests which kind of ruins your grade. He posts good study guides but the test are very specific. His lectures are a little boring so most people don't attend. Good professor but the class is tough.
Professor McNeal is an amazing lecturer. He provides you with everything you need for each exam but it is your responsibility to study them so please don't cram and try to study the night before. This class is based on memorization and our grade consisted of 4 tests and participation points and one group presentation. Would definitely take again!
This class was one of the most boring biology classes I've ever taken. He was very clear on what would be on tests, however, his tone of voice in lectures did not help me stay awake. Honestly, if you regularly study for tests, you'll do fine in class. He provides you with all the materials you need to do well just be prepared to be bored.
Dr. McNeal loves what he teaches but if you don't love what he's teaching you will not learn anything. He's nice and not a bad professor, I just really could not listen to anything he was saying. Tests were pretty hard if you didn't pay attention in class and they pretty much make up your whole grade. Participation points can save your grade though
Worst professor I have ever had, I took this class last semester but leaving a review now bc I remembered how bad it was since now I have a better professor. Very hard tests, large portion of the class dropped. You cannot memorize as he makes all the question application types. He needs to understand not everyone is a biology major.
DO NOT take him unless you like majority of your grade to be based on how you do on tests. He is very lecture heavy and get off topic very easily about unless information that isn't relevant to what is taught. I am an straight A student but this class was awful. He is not good about responding to emails so if you have him GOOD. LUCK.
Horrible!!!!! These reviews are so false, he deserves a horrible rating. He is the reason why my GPA isn't going to be a 4.0 anymore. I study and attend lectures and still receive failing grades. He doesn't respond to emails. All the other bio classes get extra credit, bonus points, and a notecard on each test. NOT HIM though!!!
horrible will continue to say this he is so bad and yall dont need to be fooled.
Tests are worth exactly 66.67% of the final grade, and the questions come straight from lectures--there isn't much room for other categories (HW, extra credit, etc). The way the class is structured isn't ideal, be prepared to work VERY hard to get a good grade. However, Dr. McNeal does curve exams and he's very knowledgeable about what he teaches.
He grades VERY late. However he is a good teacher, labs were generally very easy anyways so you don't need much help. Not that accessible outside of class. Easy grader in most cases. We had a word bank for practicum fall semester.
if you want to fail then take him. he is absolutely a living nightmare if you take him for a lecture class. his tests are nothing like the lectures. he says oh don't worry even if you fail the tests you participation grade will save you with a C OR a D in the class!he is not lenient and will not replace a low test score with your final exam grade
His exams are over like 6-7 chapters of which he only posts powerpoints with pictures. Exams are hard but curved because not many people do good on them. 2 presentations in front of class and surveys each class count for attendance. Do what you want w this info
I feel bad rating Dr. McNeal so low because he is so nice and is incredibly smart, but he CANNOT teach ecology! His powerpoints only had pictures from the textbook and the lectures are SO BORING. He takes 30 minutes out of every class for random group presentations and uses them to make exam questions. Get ready to teach yourself from the textbook.
He's not the worst but bro cannot lecture to save his life. He rambles and talks himself in circles, and he's aware of it too. Requires 2 group presentations per student, one group presents every lecture. If you have any other option, take them
DONT take this professor! His lectures are pointless, he just rambles on and on about stuff that is off topic. And then when everyone fails the tests he says "this is common sense and that everyone should know this." Dont even try to email him because he will not answer, and dont try to ask for extra credit because he will "barf"
boring lectures. better off reading textbook. not a bad guy. curved the test. exams werent terrible if you read the textbook. 2 group projects
His class wasn't bad; he isn't the most interesting professor, so it's easy to doze off (didn't help that it was a 5pm class). Going to class is necessary though; he posts lecture outlines but he'll give test questions on details that he went over in class that were not posted. Also has in-class activities that are graded.
Dr. McNeal is a very smart, amazing professor. In ecology, he had group presentations which were material covered by the tests as well. He was pretty monotone, but curved exams and you would have to try pretty hard to fail. Material he emphasized in class is sure to be on exams and he said that as well. I would absolutely take this class again.
He's not a bad professor, but you do need to take good notes in class or read the textbook. I've gotten away with only needing lecture notes but i had my own study guide to study, average about a 90-92 on exam. His ppt's are sometimes only pictures, so being in class to interpret those are important.
