Very nice teacher and very helpful. Goes kind of slow and goes through every step in detail, which is important for those who have trouble with math.Tests are kind of hard and take home quizzes are a pain- gave us a hard quiz over break.I recommend Chang!

I think he was a wonderful teacher, he was very helpful to me. He didn't mind if you left early. I think he was pretty cool.

I have never had a better math teacher then he. He was patient, thorough and never made a student feel dumb for not understanding the material. I was very afraid of this subject but he made me feel comfortable and I became very interested in the subject. I highly recommend him.

He was a good teacher. He would always take time to go over any question I had and explain it. The only downfall is his final is wortha big chunk of your grade like 39or something. He was nice, and helpful if you took the time to go to him.

Took this class for mediated learning-- a great class. He always took the time to explain things. I don't know how he would be as a normal teacher, but with the academic systems he is great. EASY A. The only thing he needs is to get rid of the tweed pants and the glasses.

This was a mediated class so it was my fault for taking it. He was very helpful and I was very SLOW to catch on so that says something about him. I ended up getting a c and I believe it could've been worse with a different teacher. I would recommend him.

Teacher is hard but fair he gives you plenty of opportunities for extra credit.

By far, the BEST teacher I have had at SPC. Do the homework and review exercies, you'll get an A. Lectures from start to end with minimal time for questions.

Mr. Mercer is a patient person. He teaches well and doesn't mind taking time to walk you through the steps if you don't understand them. Definitely a good teacher and helps out very much

Calc. is hard but Mercer makes sense out of it all.

Great prof. he is very clear in explaining on how to go about doing the work. Mercer starts from top to bottom, skipping nothing in between whether you know it or not... Do NOT get me wrong though, he does not waste time and if very good at communicating as long as you're not shy to go up to him and actually ask something.look for him next semester

Honestly if you want to learn math step for step. hes the professor for you. He gives you chances to do extra credit for all tests up to 5%. He lets you take your quizes as many times as you want.

At first I was worried about Mr. Mercer, thinking he was going to be the hardest professor I had but now that I've stuck it out, he's great, he goes step by step and is easy to understand but he does move quickly. If you find yourself needing any help just go see him durring his office hours, for the first time i understand math and mr. mercer!

He is a good teacher. You have to do the homework to get an A unless you already know the material.

I find him to be an overall good professor; though, sometimes he can be a little confusing. He answers all your questions and helps you understand anything you don't. He speaks loud and clearly and asks if any one has questions. The only problem; however, is he tends to stand in front of the board... It can be a little agitating. Overall he is a good professor, I would recommend him. Not rude nor mean... At all.

I like teachers who give homework, when it comes to math I feel it's important to have practice to back up your learning. If he didn't give the homework, I don't think I would've passed. I made an A, he teaches well, somewhat monotoned and boring, but overall a good teacher.

I had no issue understanding the material, my issue was his testing. There is absolutely no retakes for exams and they are worth a ridiculously big chunk of your grade. Also the homework hardly helps improve your grade it being 10% and lots of it. Covers a lot of material each class, attendance is crucial. Very monotone lectures. Uses web assign.

I think he is a great teacher. He gives you homework online, so you can study what you see in class better. The tests are really easy, I got all As and Bs. Already took two of my math classes with him and am looking to take my next class of applied calculus with him.:)

Professor Mercer gives thorough lectures for each chapter and section within. If you complete the required homework before the lecture you will do well. He always stopped to explain something in the middle of the lecture if someone didn't understand. He gives many examples and works out the problems with you. I am better at math because of him.

He is very good teavher. I had him for precalc. Homework is required. His test are not too hard, if you did the Homework.

You can tell he enjoys teaching. There are usually 2 assignments due a week but it's online so it's not that bad, at all. His test are usually after every chapter but there only about 15-20 questions and half are multiple choice. The ONLY thing I have a problem with is he takes so long to grade test and i'm always anxious to see what my grade is.

Great teacher. Lot's of homework on my math lab, but without that practice, it would be easy to fail. As long as you don't skip classes, you should not have a problem getting good grades- regardless if you are good at math or not.

He is very nice and caring. Homework is all online on my math lab and due every two weeks. Homework is excepted late with only .5% taken off. He is kind of boring when lecturing but he cares and will help you if needed. If you pay attention, his class is easy. The final is super hard!

Took his College Algebra, he will help you if you ask. Does group assignments which isn't bad. His tests were alittle difficult, you have to study. Final Exam is easy if you study the review

Joel Mercer is a great teacher. He assigns group assignments and his power points can be accessed online.

Math has always been a tough subject for me, but he makes it possible for everyone to pass is you actually try. There is a lot of h.w but I am glad he requires you to do it because if you aren't good at math there is no other way you would be able to learn the subject. Quizzes are just like the tests.

There are a lot of handouts but they were all group assignments. Plenty of time to complete everything. Gives partial credit for test answers. Barney style lectures so it's very easy to understand the topics.

Like the dude. Funny guy overall; class content was incredibly easy an he taught it as such, can't do much groundbreaking teaching considering the material. Not a huge fan of group assignments, which was essentially the only thing handed out, but I found no issue in just working alone and putting the other names on my sheet. An easy A overall.

Pro. Mercer is AWESOME! Calculus is the most difficult class I've taken but he made it easy. He assigns groups and group assignments in addition to HW (good cushion for overall grade). Lots of tests & quizzes but he drops the lowest grade of each. Pay attention in class, do the assignments, gain an understanding of the material and you'll do great!

My only SPC class taken at a campus as opposed to online, I didn't have the highest expectations, especially in a subject I was well overqualified to learn, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well Mercer was able to teach everything. Effectively makes it feel like elementary material and had the class laughing a lot. Homework was group work.

Easy class, not bad. Kinda boring but only bc the content's already pretty easy. Pay attention in class bc he calls on everyone. Lots of group work. You could probably get away with not coming to class, just make sure someone writes your name on the group assignments when you turn them in.

I really like Mr. Mercer he is very engaging and does easy group work. I'm not great at Math and he made it easier. He has a specific teaching method but, it worked for me !

He sets everything up nicely and unless you have technical problems, this class should be simple. He does give homework questions and quizzes but definitely doesn't mind helping with any issues. He gives ample time to complete assignments and always sends awesome scholarship oppertunities, he cares and it shows!

Goes step by step and not too fast. Honestly, slow at times from other people not knowing what is going on. I feel like that is a good thing but makes it boring at times. Good teacher and makes funny comments. Little boring but it's math. Easy A if you are willing to do all the hw and learn the material EVERY week.

Joel Mercer is a good professor. The lectures are helpful, but sometimes a bit slow. He goes step by step and makes the material easy to understand. The homework and quizzes are not too difficult. He will call on you sometimes in a Zoom class though, so make sure you're paying attention.

Joel Mercer is a great teacher he only gives you one honor lock test and 3 tests you can do in Mathlab. I mean if you are lazy and don't like to do hw then why sign up for classes. This class can be an easy A or B if you put any effort ii took college algebra and got an A now I'm doing pre-calc and most likely end up with a good grade.

Although he is a bit monotone and can sound intimidating, Joel Mercer is a really nice person who wants to help you understand. He takes attendance over Zoom and will call on you, so be prepared. He does that to make sure you're paying attention. The class gets harder at the halfway point. The final is 30% of the grade too... scary.

I chose the class with Zoom lectures, and I enjoyed them much. This professor takes attendance at the begging and end of the course and can call you to solve a problem, so listen to the lectures because the participation is 10% of your grade. He explains everything easily, works with students who are a bit behind, and is there if you need him.

Professor Mercer is an extremely kind man who really cares about the success of all students. Unfortunately i feel ALEKS is a horrible addition to this class and definitely doesn't help but the professor really tries his best to be flexible where possible.

Prof. Mercer is probably a 4 out of 5, but I gave him a 5 because a 2.9 is an inaccurate average for him. I enjoy math and sometimes his lectures are a little long and boring but his grading criteria are very clear. He also provides a lot of feedback and I ALWAYS see him help someone when they ask for it. Like any class, you have to work for it.

His lecture's were very to the point and easy to follow, although he was behind at times he would always manage to touch on every chapter enough to the point where reviewing the textbook after was easy. Midterm was 30% and final was 30%, 7 mcq and 7 frq, that had very similar questions to prior tests (unproctored) and short exams (proctored).

His grading criteria is concise. One thing I wish all mathematics professors entailed were more enthusiasm but you can tell he genuinely wants you to pass. I usually self teach bc he does go too fast and his strategies are complex but I do enjoy his class.

Professor Mercer is the BEST math professor. I formerly only took math classes online or with LiveOnline, I never understood math/ struggled with all of my classes, however his lectures (which are sometimes fast paced) were clear, & he always used amazing examples or tips to help remember the material. He truly cares! 10/10

Professor Mercer was an exceptional professor. He showed how to effectively break down complex problems into simpler tasks, as well as helping you memorize the process of solving hard problems by sharing various tricks that make it easier to understand them. I took this class during the summer, and he was able to thoroughly cover each topic.

Not sure why Mercer has such a low rating, because he is really not that bad. This was a 10 week live online calculus course, and I finished the class with a 97. Put in the work, read the textbook, and sign up for tutoring as needed. 10-15 hours are required outside of live instuction depending on the week. Last bit of the class was a bit rushed.

I took Professor Mercer for calculus 1 two years ago. I'm in physical chemistry now and I'm so impressed by how much calculus I retained from his class. A quick refresh, with a vague memory of his voice in my head repeating each step and I feel like I learned it just yesterday. I definitely suggest taking him!

Professor Mercer's MAC2311 class is manageable if you put in the work. Leverage the textbook, tutoring, and study tools like Unstuckstudy to succeed. The grading system is clear, and he's helpful when you ask for it. Overall, a solid calculus course.

Amazing professor

2.9 is WAY too low. Mr. Mercer is a great professor. I really enjoyed his class and he's pretty funny. He responds to emails within a day (but not on weekends) and he was helpful when I was having trouble with the formats of the quizzes. SELF STUDY! I did a lot of it! Math is a hard subject and you should ALWAYS look up things you don't understand.

I took this last summer. The course included seven unproctored tests, a midterm, and a final — both the midterm and final had practice tests provided in advance that were nearly identical to the real ones. Besides this, he was an amazing lecturer.

Professor Mercer's rating is not accurate at all. I thought he was a great professor and wants the best for the students. Everything is on Pearson MyLab Math, tests and exams follow the reviews. He'll call on you once in a while to see if you are paying attention. Overall, if you study, do the work, and show up to his Zoom class, you'll be fine.

He communicates super clearly and his tests and exam reviews prepare you for the exams! I understand why his exams were 70% of the grade (total), and the grade depends on how well you study. Be consistent in studying! Take the time to get extra context for the material, don't be afraid to review the basics. Overall, very solid class.
