He provides very clear notes in class with plenty of examples to help you understand how to do the problems. Very willing to help in office hours and very friendly. His tests aren't easy but if you pay attention in class and study beforehand they aren't too bad. Overall very good, I would take his course again.
Very friendly and very willing to help, but he does like to challenge his students meaning his tests can be pretty difficult. However, just ask questions, go to office hours (he tries to remember everybody's name), DO PRACTICE PROBLEMS, and do your best on the weekly homework (it's 30% of your grade).
Professor Nibert is very easygoing and a great teacher. He didn't get annoyed by answering questions like other professors can do and explained them very well. He also can be very funny which makes the class go by a lot faster. Just do the homeworks and make a study sheet a couple of days before each tests and study off of those.
Clear lectures, well organized, will go into detail and do many practice problems for difficult sections or if he sees students struggling. Friendly and helpful to students, will help you if you approach him. Tests are hard, but if you do the homework and study, you'll do fine. Usually curves.
Nibert is this young guy who barely started teaching at UT (i am typing this in spring 2015). He's always in office hours and he has this fun air to him when he gives lectures. I barely read the textbook because I don't need to; if I go to class and pay attention, he is a great lecturer and I'll be able to ace the homework. Tests are hard, but fair
Class was super slow. Lectures were super boring. Material was alright
TESTS HARD. MULTIPLE CHOICE. 9 PROBLEMS USUALLY. Lectures in class will NOT fully prepare you. You must do a lot of conceptual studying as well as practicing. He is heavy on concept work. Do not expect an A in this class. He is helpful but if you do not know what will be on the test, what is there to ask?
Tests hard, ask for help and you will get it, but doesn't mean it will help you on the test.
This guy is awesome and he taught the material very well
He's a really easy going professor, and he seems to enjoy his job. He's always at office hours and is very clear with his answers. I would definitely recommend taking any class that he's teaching.
If you haven't taken the class before, don't waste your time. There are two midterms with no curves, and the majority of my class failed both, despite the fact that 85% were retaking the class from high school. Not a single one of us taking it for the first time could pass a test.
He comes to class with a chip on his shoulder thinking he is the man. Teaches only concepts and does not help us work out problems that he gives in class but more so discusses the concepts than actually solving it which is NOT helpful AT ALL. Reviews over concepts THAT ARE NOT EVEN ON THE TEST. Quest HWs and Bookwork will NOT PREPARE YOU.
What kind of teacher DOESN'T CURVE when the class averages are 50s and 60s??????????? He states to the class literally in the beginning of the year, "well 2 marvelous students got 100's, so why should I even curve?" Don't take this teacher if you want to keep a 3.0+ he will bring your grade down. 9 multiple choice questions 1 free response tests...
Do not take this class if you are not prepared to sit at the front of every lecture and eat from the palm of his hand. Two midterms, one final, 9 multiple choice one free response. His tests are meant for students to fail. If you are not already proficient at calculus do not expect to pass this class with higher than a C.
Dr. Nibert's tests are very "make it or break it". One wrong MC question can put you at 90. And partial credit is not necessarily given. I'd recommend studying for each test as you would a for final if you can afford it. Class lectures are alright. He prefers to work through concepts as a class rather than teaching it first and then practicing.
I have taken Dr. Nibert for Probability as well as Interest Theory. He is a very friendly guy in office hours, which you might need to go to frequently because his tests are pretty hard. I thought he was a great professor and I would highly recommend taking him.
The grading system was tough. 30% is homework which is nice. There are only 2 midterms each 20% and a final 30%. Each midterm had 9 questions (8MC, 1FR), so there's no way to get partial credit if you got something wrong. Take this class only if you're a good test taker. Dr. Nibert is passionate. Lecture was interesting enough. Tiny, tiny curve.
don't take this class if you want a good grade.
Dr. Nibert's lectures were funny and engaging. He also genuinely cares for students and is willing to answer questions even after class. It was nice that he learned his students' names. His tests are definitely tough though, and the way the grades are weighed definitely makes ALL exams important. His TA, Milica, was also really nice and helpful.
Great teacher. Engaging lectures. I learned a lot in the class. Tests were tough; you have to make sure you really understand not only how to do problems but how to think through things conceptually. Pro tip: make study groups. Office hours were helpful. This professor cares and will make the effort to learn your name. Would take again.
Professor Nibert is by far one of the best professors I have ever had at UT. Going to his office hours is definitely worth your time, and he is not a professor who takes pride in students failing. Also, he will teach you the information like none other. Take professor Nibert!
Dr. Nibert's tests are challenging and tricky; the two midterms had 8 MC and 1 FRQ. His class is flipped, so you learn material online and practice in class. He does review the concepts in class if he sees that students are struggling with the topic, and he encourages participation. There is almost no curve, though homework is 30% of the grade.
Joel Nibert has a friendly approach in his lectures, utilizing relevant and current examples. 1: Read up/do homework. 2: The assignments are quite interesting, and they do require plenty of thought. 3: Practice makes perfect. Stats are tricky and you need some precision. IV: R is king, engine and you will learn how to use it
Nibert is a great professor. He explains things clearly in lecture and in office hours. Homeworks aren't too bad, but he writes extremely difficult tests. The second exam had to be curved. Exam format is typically 8 MC questions (no partial credit) and between 1-3 free response questions, for which you do get partial credit. He is worth taking.
His flipped classroom style did not work for me. We learned using quest modules designed by another professor, but he writes his own tests, which are fairly difficult and way beyond what he teaches in class.
Honestly pretty easy general math class and the Prof is very nice. He is funny and interactive and as long as you take some notes and do the homework it really isn't bad.
Nibert is awesome. He truly loves math and wants others to see the beauty in it too. He is funny and cares that you understand. He does mainly lecture and work through concepts rather than particular problems, which makes the hw harder for me. He loves critical people and people who love to ask questions, so speak up!
Good professor. Uses slideshows for test information, but also uses topics only talked about in class. Very enthusiastic, and he made class more enjoyable.
Professor Nibert is insanely smart, but he makes the class so unnecessarily difficult that it becomes difficult to really learn anything. He's really nice, but the class can be pretty overbearing.
Dr. Nibert is just a super nice guy with cheesy jokes. He tries really hard to encourage conversations during lectures, and he learned everyone's names within about a month. I'm not a huge fan of probability as a subject, but I found myself enjoying the class despite that. Easy enough class if you excel at math.
Joel Nibert is the single worst professor I've ever had. He's arrogant and completely removed from the struggle most students face in his Calculus II class. His flipped classroom style completely remove the need to attend lectures, where he just makes snide jokes and dodges questions for an hour. Do yourself a favor and do NOT take this professor.
Flipped class style meaning you do online modules and go to class where he just do lots of examples.
Nibert is a conceited teacher who is a self proclaimed "mental math" genius and therefore places himself above any problems or questions that most students have. He makes 329F an unnecessarily hard class. His in class problems are easy, book hw insanely hard, and tests closer to the latter (in terms of difficulty not content). Don't sign up 4 this.
Gave difficult tests that consisted of 8 MC problems worth 10 points each and 1 FR problem worth 20. The answer choices were often so similar that a simple algebraic mistake could cost 10 points without partial credit. I felt that I did not get the chance on tests to prove that I knew the calculus. He can teach, but horrible grader. :'(
Nice guy outside of class. However he is a horrible teacher. His tests are MC so missing one question can drop your test grade 10-12 percentage points. If you get an mc question correct but your work is not correct, you will only get at best 50% credit for that question. Basically get ready to get a 70% on every exam.
Nibert is a very nice guy who cared about his students. This being said, the way his class is set up makes it extremely difficult to be successful. It is a flipped class with online learning modules as your main resource for learning the material. I would not recommend taking this class, but if you do, go to office hours and lecture, he notices.
Professor Nibert cares for each of his students. There were numerous occasions when he made himself available to me even after his office hours had ended; you can tell he's really passionate about what he does. If you do the homework and pay attention in class you'll easily pass. Plus he's hot so that makes showing up to class easier.
Semester was ok, go to class and do HW and you should be good. Also, he looks like Ryan Gosling's cute younger brother -- and he is kinda flirty ;)
Nibert is such a fantastic professor, and a great person as well. He engaged with the students and made the class a comfortable space for us to speak out and discuss things. He brought in physical tools and activities to help us further understand the lesson, and it really helped. He is really nice, and he made the class fun. I would 100% recommend
Funny guy who knows how to teach math in a way that's easy. Exam heavy (3exams+final72% of grade) and weekly homework from textbook. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory (8% of grade) but he does it daily and it could help you pass if you bomb exams (You might have to buy a $20-something subscription to TopHat for attendance/participation).
Dr. Nibert is a great prof. He demonstrates concepts and includes example problems. The quest HW, although hard, does prepare you for exam (Perfect study bank for each test). Just redo all quest HW before test, and test is fair. He is funny, and really does make an effort to be available outside class.
Wow! Where do I start. Dr. Nibert has been one my favorite math professors so far at UT. He knows the material well and teaches on the board which is how a math class should be taught. The charisma of Dr. Nibert is like no other professor at UT. He was the kind of professor that made me want to show up to class just to attend his amazing lectures.
Great professor! He makes a daunting subject feel easy and teaches in a way that makes class enjoyable. While class and textbook use were optional, I found my self utilizing both. I hope to take another class with him.
Nibert is a really smart person and a cool dude, but his teaching methods were very frustrating for me as a math major. Every lecture, he would play dumb while doing the math and simply direct questions to the class for each step of every problem. He would be a much better teacher if he just taught the material in a more straightforward manner.
Really nice guy and genuinely wants to help you but his lectures are way too easy. He uses the same examples over and over and it will not prepare you for his exams (which are very conceptual). Be prepared to work VERY hard for your grade outside of class.
Dr. Nibert really cares about his students. He explains very well and the material seems pretty straightforward for the most part. However, I feel like even though the exams were easy, I would still get low grades on them. I ended up with a lower average than I anticipated. Either the TA's are tough graders or I'm just not good at math haha.
The textbook for the course was very dry, so the lectures were a must for me. Prof. Nibert made Probability interesting and helped explain everything really well. Would definitely recommend. Homework has few but difficult problems, so make sure you add lots of easy ones on your own to practice on, or you will run out of time on exams.
Nice person, but I would not recommend taking his class. In-class problems are easy, HW is difficult and tests are very challenging. Be prepared to do a lot of work on your own.
Gives MC exams where if you get a question wrong you get 0 points, if you get a question right, you get half points, and if you get a question right and show all your work and it makes sense, then you get full points. Probably the worst professor ever.
The test are hard, have multiple choice and free response. Nice guy, funny. The lectures are also fun but class is hard and he does easy problems in class. take only if he is the only one available
This guy is terrible. Hard exams, easy hw, easy in class problems.
My advice is to always attend class. The book has great practice problems if you're looking to take FM, but it's horrible to learn from. Ideally, you learn from Dr. Nibert's lecture, but I missed a week early in the course and never really recovered from it. I ended up buying a Coaching Actuaries subscription towards the end and was able to pass.
I can't believe how many bad reviews there are! Nibert was my favorite professor last semester, hands down! He breaks down concepts really well and focuses on making sure we really understand the material, not just be able to fill in the blanks of formulas.
I took Dr. Nibert's class during the 2020 summer of COVID and it was such an interesting and worthwhile class. Dr. Nibert's class is fair and if you pay attention during lectures/do the textbook reading you will! do! well! He is very easy to communicate with and a friendly guy.
I am not going to take this professor again. His lecture is easy but the exams are hard. And also he is a tough grader. I don't recommend his classes.
TERRIBLE. homework EXCESSIVE. Doesn't respect students. Gives vague answers. Ignores questions. He always sounds unsure of the content he's teaching. Never emphasizes what is important. Assigns LONG DAILY readings. Daily QUIZZES on said readings. THEN NEVER mentions the text content in class. Hard tests. His "teaching" style made me hate stats.
I took him for summer 2020 and he is one of the hardest professors I have ever had. Daily readings, daily quizzes, extremely vague questions on exams and takes off points if not answered to "completion." I honestly really liked statistics before this class. I don't think he even understands what he's teaching. Good guy but a terrible professor.
Possibly the worst professor/teacher I've had in my life. Not a bad guy but I really would recommend avoiding taking his classes if you want to preserve your mental health
Nibert is not a bad guy, he's just bad at teaching. There is no practice problem or anything before the exams. He would teach the basic stuff about the materials and then test on the deeper levels. If you want to take this class from him, take your own notes from the textbook and copy his examples in class.
You'll probably have to read the textbook yourself. Some professors can't teach but their exams make sense. Nibert can't teach and his exams don't make sense. He would test on things that are not extremely hard but are things that he didn't really talk about in class so you won't see it coming. Just avoid his class if possible
Nibert uses a lot of his class time talking about things that are inconsequential to know for any of the graded assignments. His tests don't cover the lectures in far more depth than he goes into. You would assume that the textbook would cover it then, but you would be horribly mistaken. The textbook is a very general outline of the topics.
The lectures are completely useless other than to identify the topics. He grades the whole course based on 3-4 tests, where the final is weighted more than a quarter of the grade. Homework counts but is worth a negligent amount. He doesn't teach, his homeworks do not help for exams, therefore you will be blindsided in the exams.
It felt like a high school class. He would walk to the back of the room to see what we were doing on our computers. Although attendance isn't "mandatory," there are in class assignments (so it basically is mandatory). He is decent at explaining things but he is pretty full of himself. I like math and I hated this class because of the teacher.
This class is a nightmare. Lectures cover the most basic of topics, while homework's are incredibly extensive and the tests are even more extensive. Content on the exam might not even be examples we have even touched on or acknowledged in class. He is a really nice guy but dear god is this class difficult. THE FIRST EXAM AVERAGE WAS A 70
Tests are a lot different from homework and class problems which makes it hard to study because students are not given any other material to review. He is a nice guy but he does not adequately prepare you for tests, not to mention there is a time crunch for most of the exams.
Prof Nibert is a nice guy. However he teaches very basic concepts and examples that wont prepare you for the exams which are very difficult and very specific. (Our last exam class avg was barely a 60). Prepare to teach yourself and practice tons of difficult problems from the textbook because the class wont. You can expect to get tested on them.
Dr. Nibert is a nice guy, this semester he made it a point to talk about political activism. However, in line with what other people have said, he is an awful professor. He refuses to give any hint as to what will be on the exam, saying that we should "feel comfortable with all of the content". Avoid him, even though he's a nice guy.
I don't think the hate for Nibert is warranted. Sure the class is hard, the tests are hard, etc. But I really feel like if you put in the work, go to office hours, and pay attention, you will do fine in the class. Lectures are simpler than tests; when are they ever not? Nibert is a nice guy and wants you to succeed.
We only had a total of 4 HWs in this class so barely any practice. We asked Professor Nibert for additional practice problems but he never posted any. All of his exams were super hard but the final was the hardest of them all because we didn't have enough practice to prepare us for this level of difficulty.
No, no, no. The hate for Nibert is warranted. Nibert shows only basic problems for lectures and tests us on things we haven't seen in lecture and homework. Skip this professor.
He gives overly simplified lectures that don't actually teach you anything. The result is homework and exam problems that feel way too difficult, so most of your time is spent reading the textbook and teaching yourself the material. I've had classes where I've had to teach myself before, but man this one was especially brutal. Avoid avoid avoid.
Very few homework and super hard tests. The textbook is of no help. He's nice a guy but I wouldn't recommend taking a class with him.
DO NOT TAKE. Does not care about his students and DOES NOT FOLLOW HIS OWN SYLLABUS. Spent whole semester talking about how this is a hard semester asking for good review. Then gives a super hard final copied from SOA exam. Syllabus said we got 1 HW drop but he refuses to do it. Does not disclose grading bounds and assign whatever he wants to us.
Talked about useless things every class, gave very few homework assignments but very hard midterms. He did the least amount of work possible, gave a really hard final, and managed to mess up our final grade and refused to fix his mistake. Don't take him if you want to live a long happy life, he'll bring you more stress than actual knowledge.
I took this guy over the summer, it was a 5 week class, he give us 5 exams in total. We also have quiz every workday, due before the class. The workload is insane and his exam is nothing like the homework and his lecture is irrelevant to his exam.
Don't recommend him. He did the math without any explanations and he tested on explanations heavily. Even though you copy explanations from the textbook, you still cannot get all the points. Lectures are easy but not enough for you to study for the exams. He did not give feedback on Hw. I had a question wrong and I still get 10/10.
Dr. Nibert is a good professor and explains the content well. He takes his time in explaining topics. However, the tests sometimes include things he didn't really focus on in class. The exams have very few questions so missing one might hurt your grade, but he does give partial credit on some questions.
You'd better get ready to study on your own. A good way to get A in his class is to study as a group.
Best math professor I had at UT. Gives very clear explanations of difficult concepts. Genuinely likes teaching, is kind and accessible. Never makes you feel like your question is dumb.
AVOID. He doesn't work problems in class, gave very few homeworks and an extremely hard final which is worth more than a quarter of the grade. The last homework was assigned mid-October. By far the worst math professor I've taken at UT coming from a senior math major. Don't take his class and buy a CA subscription for STAM, you'll actually learn.
Nibert gives frequent exams, and doesn't grade the homework in time for them. He also only grades a few questions, and doesn't release the solutions, so your feedback is very limited. On the exams he makes us type out math answers for some reason. The projects are also graded pretty harshly, considering the vague guidelines.
He is not good at teaching at all. You should be prepared for self-study. He will not help you get ready for STAM exam. His study content is outdated. He teaches way to easy and tests you super hard without letting you know the detail of grading ahead of time. You do not know what he is expecting from you.
Lectures were easy to understand, but HW and Exams are really hard, and something unexpected would pop up. Exams were never given enough time and harsh grader. You would be graded by tiny things and lose many points. Avoid this professor if you can. Really hard to get an A.
Rambles all class, you have to teach yourself from the textbook. Homework & exams are nothing like class. On exams he will ask you to solve a problem and even if you do it correctly you will fail if you don't write the textbook definitions/formulas before starting the problem (he never indicates this requirement). Will not accept regrade requests.
Dr. Nibert is incredibly nice, but you definitely need to be prepared to self-teach. Example problems from class lectures are very simplified and don't really prepare you for the tests, but if you do the homeworks the tests are fairly easy and the class should be an easy A.
Nibert is a really nice professor that made the class feel pretty relaxed. Lectures were pretty basic but he covers the main ideas well enough to do most of the homework. To finish the homework, you're expected to read the textbook for a couple of topics not covered in lecture. Biggest gripe was weekly homework was lengthy and 4 midterms.
His lectures give an introduction to each topic but aren't sufficient to learn the material. It's necessary to read the textbook. The exams are open note but are still rather difficult.
His lectures are very good, he is good at explaining difficult concepts in a very simple way. He is very nice as well and willing to accommodate during special circumstances.
Exams were harder than in class examples and homework so a bit hard to prepare for. However you will learn how he asks questions on exams and then it will be easier to study.
The lectures were really useful for exams in this course. Unpopular opinion but he actually covered everything we needed to know for exams during lectures, with the exception of a few challenging problems, but you should never expect a professor to teach and explain every single detail that will be on the exam.
Not a fan of his use of the Socratic method. Expecting the class to "fill in the blanks" while lecturing doesn't help the average student. His examples aren't very helpful at all. It would be better if he worked on tough homework problems; the textbook sneaks in advanced concepts in earlier chapters. Study groups/guides are essential.
Avoid if you can. He gave a lot of trick questions on exams. You'll be super careful little details for his class
He is amazing
Lectures are quite fun and explains stuff pretty well. Homework is based on the lectures and sometimes rarely on some stuff in the textbook and is overall not too hard just can take some time. The tests sometimes have trick questions but usually they are pretty based on the lectures
I do not know why M 362 K students are so upset about this professor, in my course he seemed to explain probability concepts in a very intuitive way. From my experience, he was a very good professor, his explanations were very clear and we knew what to expect for exams because they were very similar to the lecture problems and the HW
Dr. Nibert is very nice and approachable, he's patient with questions and flexible with late assignments. His lectures are easy to understand and he emphasized important points - I barely needed to read the textbook. 4 exams + final, all open-note online on gradescope (not proctored), lowest exam gets dropped. However, grade cutoffs are unclear.
His applied stats class is just a repeat of the pre rec (stats) with a silly survey project added. Has a 0 tolerance policy for technical issues and all the test are online so good luck. Grades harshly for small mistakes. Was clearly wrong in how he graded my project but refuses to admit it.
Professor Nibert is the worst professor. He clearly does not care about his students or their success. He rambles on about irrelevant topics for most of the time. He is also very condescending.I have never felt so stressed for an exam in my life. If I had to choose one professor who had the most negative impact on my college career it would be him.
He's very patient with students and explains questions even if they're dumb. He goes through a lot of examples and he's overall nice. He will walk around the room to see you work out problems which made me anxious, but the lectures online are a great resource to avoid that. Concepts are kinda complex. Exams are split up to be more manageable.
I really like his "big picture" style of lectures, even if others don't. The class is relatively easy as long as you do the homework. For those wondering it is about 10-15% proof based and the rest is computation. Very interactive lectures, and you'll get a lot more out of them if you try to bring up points/questions/answers while he is lecturing.
His lectures are pretty helpful and he goes into depth to help someone on a topic if they are confused about something. The only thing I don't enjoy about his teaching is that the tests sometimes have questions that are way different and difficult compared to what was learned before in the homework and lectures, so have to really study everything
Honestly, this class is not tough if taught properly. Nibert goes over the basics in class and then expects us to read the textbook. If you are not someone who enjoys reading math text AVOID THIS CLASS. His exams are online but the exams are HARD because he barely goes over the questions in class. Also, hard rubric its almost impossible to score
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! by the end of the semester, I was so exhausted and frustrated in the class because Nibert has a very "big picture" type of way of teaching but the exam does not. The exam is hard and the rubric is hard and eventhough the lectures are online, I ended up teaching myself some really tough concepts
Pretty solid teacher, kept us engaged during lecture and offered plenty of real-world examples to ensure our conceptual understanding. Homeworks and tests are tough all the way through.
The grading policy is a huge problem in Prof. Nibert's class. He sample grades homework assignments, which both doesn't give us an indicator of performance and doesn't reward effort. Grading of (online) exams was consistently dubious, with points being taken off for random things in fully correct solutions. Luckily the class is easy.
Do NOT take this fella. Homework is unnecessarily long and lectures are super boring. Insanely sassy guy and does not make asking questions easy. The class is just a review of intro stats with some R coding. He grades very roughly. Definitely some superiority complex ongoing in the background as well.
This class is so unbelievably boring and pretty useless. It is a basic stats class. Literally 1 to 1 review of AP stats so no clue why the credit doesn't transfer. Really picky grader and takes off marks for absolutely no reason. The class is low key easy, but overall wouldn't take it again because its utterly useless.
Interesting grading scheme
Extremely boring lectures, going to class is a complete waste of time. Gets behind the content and pushes back homework deadlines. Non-trivial exams and hard exam grading. But the class is still easy and has useful content.
The professor changes the weight/harshness of his grading based on how he's feeling it seems. Does listen to student feedback and will extend deadlines if asked. Some lectures were pointless/irrelevant. Weekly HW sets tend to be long so start early. Definitely not an impossible class but wouldn't take one with him again. TA graded roughly as well.
He's okay, grading is a bit tough and unclear but if you need to write very detailed solutions on everything. Super long problems ets abt 3 hours of homework a week, but attendance is not required. Reasonable with late work and is very strict on grading the survey project. Overall okay-ish class but required abt 3-5 hours of work a week.
Nibert's teaching style is hit-or-miss. His lectures can be dry, but engaging with the content is key. Exams are quite challenging, so using resources like Unstuck AI for study prep is really helpful. Overall, the class has useful material, but requires consistent effort.
Lectures do a great job highlighting important concepts. 7 HWs (take time), 2 Gradescope exams. Portfolio project -- choose any dataset, conduct analyses in 3 stages, graded reasonably. Grading on exams is a bit tough, easy to get points docked for small things. OHs are helpful, Nibert is flexible on late work and listens to student feedback.
There were 4 tests and a final, but they were all online, and you could use the notes. Honestly the material for this class was pretty easy as was the homework
Lectures are useless and teaching style is boring and patronizing. Says attendance isn't required but randomly decides to do in person participation and doesn't do them consistently, then makes it 10% of your final grade. Exams are graded harshly, he takes off lots of points on a whim for fully correct answers. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM.
Makes very easy content into a tedious time-consuming class. Useless lectures & very patronizing and unlikable, but has attendance assignments on random days in person (but doesn't do them consistently enough to actually gauge your attendance), assigns unnecessarily long hw assignments, & takes off points on correct exam answers. hated this class
Will duck, weave, and dodge any attempt at clear definitive communication. Will contradict the textbook and notes on his exams and will hear no argument. There are no grade cutoffs, grades are given in comparison to peers, so theoretically you could get a 99 and a B. Easy but long homeworks. Coin-flip ambiguous tests. Polite but devoid of empathy.
Not a great lecturer–it often seems like he doesn't have a plan for each lesson and just writes down relevant topics. Problem sets are the best way to learn in this class, but they are long and repetitive. Definitely start early on those. All tests are online. The class is not very difficult overall, just pretty boring.
Very patronizing and assigns 10% of final grade to participation but gives the quizzes on random days and does not do them frequently enough to actually allow you to make up absences. All of your learning is from the textbook and the homeworks are tedious. Pushed back an exam scheduled for the week to the weekend (friday to sunday) with no notice.
I thought his lectures were really bad, and they seemed like they were prepared on the spot. He grades ridiculously hard for no reason, and he gives really bad feedback. His tests are also hard, and they are nothing like what he discusses in class. He comes off as condescending a lot of times as well. Avoid this professor if you can!
Exam grading is actually the most arbitrary out of all classes I've taken. Does not communicate about exams, grading, or attendance. Seems like the entire class is organized arbitrarily. Some topics are also sensitive - adds content and questions about controversial social topics that seem out of scope for the class. Would not take again.
This was most horrible math class I've ever taken; do not recommend taking a class with him. He somehow made very easy topics (pretty much just ap stats) into a struggle with repetitive long hw assignments, oddly harsh exam grading, and random attendance quizzes (not distributed evenly at all). He also is just patronizing and not flexible at all
He's a nice guy, but the main issue with this class is that he is very much anti-partial credit. Note: For "select all" multiple-choice questions, he does not give partial credit. No grading guidelines, and when asked about what it could be, he says, "it's not relevant". However, he is very smart and brings a lot of energy to the classroom.
Dr. Nibert was a bit quirky but overall a very chill guy. I think the class moved too slow and the lectures ended up being really boring. While the tests were graded harshly, I thought that they were all mistakes that I could have corrected. Overall not bad just a boring class that moved too slow.
Sorry he's just not a good professor. He makes his class so incredibly tedious, grades his tests with random criteria. His lectures are straight up useless, you have to just read the book. AND THE CLASS CONTENT ISN'T EVEN HARD! There is simply no point is making his student's lives this difficult for what is just an AP stats course. Would not take.
Lectures were very unstructured; usually just him talking through his thoughts or making up practice problems on the spot, which made it really hard to pay attention. Exams were pretty hard, and why was each homework assignment 4 pages long minimum? :,( On the plus side, he does somewhat curve at the end, at his discretion.
Ended with an 88, but gave me a B instead of B+. When another student and I both asked how he gave out letter grades, he ghosted us. Exams were graded super harshly-would take off points for not including stuff that were never asked for in the question, or given any expectations about in class. Content is easy overall, but dont take if u want an A.
He left UT June 2025. Joel is a funny and knowledgeable prof. The class material is straightforward (like AP Stat), but he includes trick Qs and grades pretty strictly on exams. Exams are open-note at home. HW was easy. Office hours were super helpful for HW help and exam prep. He is a cool guy to get to know, so I definitely recommend him.
