Joel is a genuinely helpful professor. He makes sure that you get what you worked for grade-wise, even if you're having difficulties. Sometimes it's a little hard to follow him, but he makes up for it with his lenient grading, kindness, and helpfulness.
Great teacher. Will definitely take another class with him.
Really enjoyed his College Algebra class. We fell behind but he was very lenient about the whole thing. He will work with you to make sure you know what you are doing. Very nice man.
Joel is a great teacher! I was dreading this class before it started, but I am walking away feeling like it was ok.
My only complaint would be that he often has you pair up with other students to work on stuff. I do not learn well this way and would imagine others would have the same issue. Otherwise, he is great.
Best teacher in the world for developmental math! Very patient, cant wait to take his class for reg. college alg.!!!
I think he is a great teacher but people often take that for granted and would disrupt class making the class more difficult for everyone. I recommend him, but if your classmates are disruptive switch times because you will struggle, he writed fairly fast as well.
Owidi is a great instructor. He has a lot of patience with students, even with the students who don't listen, then openly complain about how they "don't get it". He's a very nice guy, and from what I've noticed, the written portion of the homework is a completion grade. I just wish he wouldn't let students take advantage of him. I recommend Owidi!
Professor Owidi is a very nice guy, absolutely tries to work with his students, and gives them every opportunity to not only pass the class but to gain a complete understanding. Absolutely worth taking, he's an amazing professor.
He is always in a really good mood and really helpful. We gives many quizzes but they are easy with you do your homework. He's one of my favorite professors and makes his class enjoyable. I would definitely want him again in the future.
If you struggle with then you MUST take his class(es), you'd be a fool if you did not. I was on the fence with my minor, but after taking algebra with him I a m super excited to start working my way up math ladder - calculus here I come. Only downside is he can be little timid and will let people disturb the class, but I would get class refocused
Great Professor, however, if he had provided handouts with instructions with problems to solve it would be easier to comprehend. Professor Huff does excellent in this aspect.
Absolutely the best math teacher I've ever had. A lot of the students took advantage of his niceness and would talk a lot and he would have to quiet them down, which was the only detraction I would say about his class, which has nothing to do with him. I made an A and grew a lot in both my math abilities and confidence at math in the future.
It's very important to do his on-line homework and text book problems in order to do well. Work on speed because it will be important at exam time. Know your trig functions before the first day. Do not miss class because part of your grade will be a weekly quiz. Start studying all the homework one week before exams and use tutors. He is polite.
Lectures are written on the board verbatim from the book with few examples. Quizzes and tests were pretty difficult because we wouldn't go over homework and had no other problems to refrence. This was one of the hardest classes I have taken. I ended up with a B, like a 89.4! Really frustrating after struggling all semester with little help.
Very vague and unclear about assignments, everything is from the book that is in his lectures as well as examples, rushes at times to get through the chapter quicker. If you miss a class then be ready to teach yourself math.
Pay attention to the course syllabus. Moves fast at times, you cannot afford to miss class. Teaches well, lots of practice opportunities in class. Great professor overall.
Lots of work, which helped with the material. Awesome professor. Would definitely take him again.
Great teacher. Really tries to work with you and doesn't act like you're wasting his time like other professors do. He really wants you to do well, with that being said there is homework every class both from the textbook and online, you can get by without doing some if you accomplish As on tests but I doubt that's possible without practice.
Toughest class I have ever taken. Professor makes every effort to be helpful. If you miss classes, do not do homework and worksheet assignments you will not pass.
Patient, straightforward teacher. Leads confused students into understanding material, instead of pointing out what might be obvious to others. Presents syllabus on first day. Homework pages, numbers and tests presented in weekly format. I personally believe Mr. Owidi to be a kind, compassionate teacher. Want his classes in my future for maths.
Doesn't help you understand any of the material!! You will end up teaching yourself math. (I spend any where from 2-4 hours a day trying to keep up with this class. And its just algebra!) Classes are super fast and if you fall behind you are on your own. Doesn't give you enough time for quizzes or exams.
By far the best Math professor I've ever taken. Professor Owidi gives his students extra time to finish homework and turn them in late. The quizzes are tough but it helps you prepare for the tests. Oh and the best thing is, he lets us do corrections on the test to have a better grade. You can't beat that! I wish I could take him for stats.
I would never take this teacher again. Worst teacher I have ever had! I don't understand how this teacher got such good marks from other students. Over half of the class is failing.
Will take this instructor again. Quizzes and Tests are tough. I learn a lot. Great prof.
Professor Owidi is a tough teacher, but he works to make sure people are given ample opportunities to succeed. He gives chances to go over tests, possibly improving one's grade, as well as being willing to work on the quiz problems, and still give you credit for the work done. There is a lot of homework, but tests aren't as hard as the worksheets.
Although he is lenient on tests, he gives way too much homework. I personally didn't have fun in his class
Knows what he's doing. Hard to find a math teacher who isn't boring. He has a quiz almost every class and sometimes lets you group up to share answers. (This is a summer class judgement). He grades quickly and fairly. He tries to learn students names and have them help teach eachother. Lastly he tries to help you pass as long as you reach out.
Horrible!! if you struggle at all he won't help. He skips steps bc he expects you to already know college algebra. He flys through lessons and gets mad when the class takes to long on a pop quiz bc no one understands anything. Test are obscure & have problems he didn't even teach. Save yourself, don't take him unless you are a natural mathmetician
Quiz almost every class. Loved being able to correct tests for a better grade. If you miss class and miss a quiz you can not make it up no matter what. Didn't let us turn in homework late. Although he does give quite a little of homework he will give you full credit even if you did not finish it. Explains problems very well and cares about you.
Mr. Owidi is really great, and he explains the material well. Be careful of pop quizzes cause they happen more often than usual. He gives test corrections which is great.
This guy is so funny! He is always joking around with the class, and is so leaniante on grading! He said there would be a quiz every class, 5 weeks in and there have only been 3 quizzes. He is a very good teacher and the class is a lot of fun
Worst Teacher, gives you 15 question tests over 3 chapters. doesn't prepare you for anything your pretty much on your own. Theres a quiz every class over stuff he hasn't covered.
pop quiz almost every class. lets you do corrections on every test. hardly checks hw mostly a completion grade. the pop quizzes gives you a chance to improve your grade. Accent makes him hard to understand sometimes.
Very nice teacher. he cares about the wellbeing of his student. Always ready to help. sure that quizzes are tough, but the test is a breeze. If you go to class, listen to what he says you will have a big fat AAAAAA. I recommend This dude.
He is not one of the best, but the best. He teaches math with passion, he really wants everyone to do well in his class. He offers test review that helps improve the grade obtained on the test. Quizzes are tougher than tests. Just study and see him or go to the learning lab if you have difficulties and you will get out of this class with an A.
Prof Owidi has been one of the best profs I've ever had. He is respected and he cares and he lets you to make better grade every time. Definitely recommended.
Joel Owidi is one of the best math teachers ever. There is a quiz almost every class, but they are quite easy. Exams are SUPER easy because they look like the quizzes, and sometimes the exercises are the same with different numbers/variables. He allows you to review your exams (but only recover 50% of the points). AMAZING lectures and funny. 10/10
Take good notes, lots of homework, class moves fast, lectures ALOT, GREAT Professor, re-explains concepts when asked to, allows corrections to be made on Tests, quizzes every class. I enjoyed the class, because I learned!
I have taken him for calc 1 and 2. He definitely cares for his students. He has worked with me several times and considering calc 2 is a pretty hard class he made it do able. Offered test corrections earning 50% of points back. Text book and optional HW is recommended. Only problem is his teaching methods. His notes are from the text book.
The test corrections help the testing pressure. Homework is optional but definitely do it, it helps with the quizzes and tests. Like any college class lots of outside work but if you can handle that, quizzes and tests are easy As. I took him for precalc, calc I, and cal II just for the 50% credit on test corrections and teaching methods. Recommend
I don't understand where all of these positive comments are coming from. He doesn't tell us any jokes and he skips over a LOT of material that is pretty vital for trigonometry. I find that me and a lot of my current classmates have to rely on the textbook's examples instead of his lectures because he never covers content we actually get tested on.
Joel Owidi is a brilliant math professor. He gives lots of in class work sheets and quizzes, which become invaluable study resources come test time. Much of the class is learning by doing, so don't be afraid to raise your hand. He's always happy to answer questions or help you with worksheets you don't understand. Highly recommended!
Quizzes and homework don't count much of your total grade. The tests are correctable for .5 points back, and they account for 50% of your grade. The final is 25% of your grade and is cumulative. He moves fast but if you read the textbook before the lecture, you will better understand the material.
Says he will give you partial credit but does not. He gives lots of pop quizzes. Doesnt explain things well. Just demonstrates.
Best Teacher Ever!!! Gives 50 percent back on test!!!! Love his teaching methods!!!!!
Do not hesitate to take his class whether he gives so many homework and pop quizzes. You will get a very pleasure result if your efforts are involved in for the whole semester :) Will not find any better and the most lenient professor at grading as he is-professor Joel Owidi.
He seems to be on another planet when he teaches. He just reads words for word from the book for no more than 15 minutes and always hands out a really hard quiz. He told everyone quizzes were just 10 percent. He literally changed it to 15 percent the last week of class. His final is 25 percent and is a sum of all the hard problems all semester.
Do not take !!! Only one A, 2 B's, serveral C's, and the rest failed. Do not take unless you want to stuggle for a C. He only has 5o percent back, because his test are super hard.
Really disorganized and sits at desk all class.
I am a math major that enjoys doing math problems. Despite the fact I spent many hours a day working out problems, I still only managed a 78.6. Expect to learn on your own, and prepare for the final. His final is super hard !
I would advise students NOT to take his class. He is VERY fast pace and has a thick accent. I had to go to tutoring everyday & still struggled with passing any of his tests--as did everyone. I felt I was teaching myself because I couldn't follow along completely. Ended up passing with an A, only because of the extra work I put outside the classroom
Prof. Owidi was an awesome prof. He truly knew how to make you understand algebra & wouldn't hesitate to answer questions. Tests questions come directly from the quizzes and the final was compiled of previous test questions. Very straightforward. He was a little hard to reach outside of class but was always there during office hours.
Homework is optional but do it, his tests and quizzes are straight from the book. Doesn't teach it to be simple, he kinda just writes whatever is in the textbook and then does some example problems, also worksheets, and random quizzes. But, he allows test corrections because there's no partial credit on tests. Basically had to teach myself.
He doesn't teach at all. He only writes meaningless definitions and then gives examples/problems without actually explaining anything. Explanations in a MATH course is a MUST!! Owidi doesn't provide that. He lets you get 50% credit back on test corrections, but that won't help when you have to remember info from this class for future math courses..
Sits at desk all class. When asked questions, he often times does not know the answer and has the class figure it out. How on earth did he get a math degree ? Find a better teacher is my advice.
this teacher was not good. I would not recommend.
just no
dont take if you can find another teacher
would not take ever again !
Best prof ever. I took coll algebra and precal and made the easiest As of my life. He lets you correct all quizzes and handouts and no matter the grade he will turn it into a 90 or 100, so you're guaranteed an A on everything except the tests, but he lets you correct those for 50% back. Anyone who thinks Owidi is tough needs to drop out of college.
I would avoid at all cost. DO NOT TAKE !! SAVE YOURSELF !
So I've taken this professor before for Trig (which i had taken with another prof and passed but wanted a refresher) and got a B. Took him for calculus I; and even doing all the hw, tutoring before and after work days, and watching videos didn't help from getting low grades. Does test corrections but gives few examples and non helpful lectures.
You can turn in almost every paper when you want. Hands out quizzes everyday, but as long as you do the homework and pay attention, you will be fine. Let's you do test corrections, to get 1/2 the points back which helps a lot. Fast paced class, but you can just ask if you have questions. He's a great teacher and he genuinely cares.
Worst teacher Ive ever had
Does not teach and do not learn. I am really good at math and love it, but this teacher is not a good one. Just do not take and find another. Literally ANYONE ELSE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER !
His test is nothing like his homework. Hard quizzes that are do almost everyclass. But you must be willing to work 4-5 hours a day to pass this class. Do the entire textbook. If you do what he gives for homework only, you are super screwed !!!!!!!
you better know your math if you wanna do this class.
not my cup of tea
ok professor
I'm sure that Professor Owidi is an amazing professor for those who don't already struggle with math, but for someone like myself who finds it their hardest subject, Owidi made it even harder. Answering questions more in riddles and in a 'Duh, it's this' way that make you feel dumb and doesn't answer your question, leaving you more confused.
His math class was a total waste of time. He doesn't teach or explain things to students just tells you "It's this" and doesn't care if you don't understand it. The homework is nothing like the material he quizzes you on. If you struggle with math at all do not risk it.
He's a great teacher! I think at this level teachers shouldn't have to be holding your hand through the course. He was completely straight foward. Explained things exactly how they are in the book. He was great as far as testing. He lets you try to fix your mistakes on tests to raise your grade. Very Approachable. Would definitely take again.
don't even have to go to class. You end up teaching yourself everything !!!!!!!!
does not teach. prepare to learn everything yourself and spend literally 5 hours a day in the learning lab
Awful, doesnt teach and explains in complicated way. Makes a lot of mistakes, be prepared to break your head trying to solve the problems as there are no solutions for many of the problems both on quizzes and on the tests.
I got an A in this class in spite of this Professor, not because. He is the type that never does any more than he has to. Aside from written homework once or twice, everything is done in ConnectMath which was how I learned the concepts. Tip: Class sessions are recorded so skip the live - skim through what was covered and learn it yourself in CM.
I got an A not because of him but because I was actually good in MATH. if MATH is not your hobby please look for another instructor otherwise you will struggle. his lectures is like someone who is revising his notes. he won't answer correctly. he will make you work hard and he goes for those who know.
Disclaimer: pandemic synchronous. Super nice guy, very patient and accessible during office hours online. However, I often felt surprised on tests. The homework is not a good indicator of what is on the exam and the feedback is lacking unless you seek it. This combination made for a very stressful semester. First C in college, easily failable.
He's just a filler while ACC tries to find a real, helpful, and competent professor. -_- Got no help from him, his S.I sessions, or anybody from the department of math. What a joke.
scary times
he was decent but I admit I had to learn mostly on my own
there were days I wanted to run into a ditch to avoid this class. Homework nothing like test
Joel is a nice guy that taught very well. Very thankful to have taken him. I enjoyed his style of teaching and always looked forward to class. I have enjoyed math since I was a young kid and was glad to learn ways to solve problems I had not yet known.
um learned to study harder in this class than any other i have taken before. certaintly hardest i have ever taken. despite stuyding nearly all the time I always felt like i was going to fail his test. When taking the test they are hard as hell. Just take a deep breath cause yes it is hard af but you have no choice. This glass gave me new life view.
interesting experience i will never forget
fun teacher loved him
cared about the students taught well
not sure why anyone would rate badly but was my favorite class yet
extremely strict with deadlines at a certain time, allows no wiggle room, technical difficulties arent allowed
He moves too fast for students to understand the lessons. He gives out way to much homework everyday and a quiz when we havent had time to learn the concept. Honestly youre teaching yourself by taking his courses because this professor is not skilled at his job at all.
If you attend the lectures, do the homework, and ask questions you will do well. Class is very quiz and test heavy but easy to do well in. The only challenging part is the comprehensive final.
He helped out
Don't take this professor unless you are ready to guide yourself through or utilize the school tutors. He has a solid lesson plan and the pace is rigorous but manageable for the most part. He is best for math-savvy students as he does not slow down for anyone. I would not recommend this professor if you aren't able to dedicate 8+ hrs weekly.
The class is not hard. As long as you study, do you work, and pay attention you'll get an A. Even the people who didn't try at all passed the class with a B or C. If you fail this class you're simply not doing any work or putting time in. Joel provides quizzes, reviews, and homework, EXACTLY like the test and exams. Easiest A+ you can ask for.
Professor Owidi gives lectures off of the textbook. So if you were to have it open while he teaches, it helps to know where you are in the lesson. And you can come back to it later. Hws and quizzes were on Aleks. He's pretty helpful as long as you communicate what you're confused on. Especially if you make time to go to his office/after class hrs.
Very good teacher, teaches you how you arrive at a formula before just giving you formulas makes learning easier and easier to understand. Just keep up with work
This is a difficult course but there is plenty of guidance along the way. Mr. Owidi provides resources such as the textbook and online platform to prepare for the exam and these applications provide multiple practice problems to prepare for the exam.
I have always struggled with math and I signed up for this class before discovering RMP. If I had known, no way I would have taken this class because all of the negative reviews are true. I ended up dropping the class because I knew I wouldn't pass the way his lectures were run. He literally didn't explain anything, just gave answers to questions.
He will never help you with any questions you have no matter what they are. On several occasions, I had asked for help on a question we had just completed, and instead of helping he would either ignore or say he doesn't know any question you asked. What made this bad, was he would regularly ask if any had any questions and would never answer them.
First week of class we wasted on the incorrect textbook. He doesn't communicate when you have hw, the syllabus was unhelpful. He lectures well and is lenient, but that leniency comes from the double edge of highly inconsistent structure. If you need consistent routine and guidance he is not the professor for you.
I try extremely hard to enjoy every class. However, Professor Owidi makes it hard to do so. 1. He enjoys math and teaching, however, his voice is very monotone and his lectures are unfun. 2. He never turned on his camera despite insisting the students do (I still don't know what he looks like) 3. He gave class quizzes on immediately new content.
Worst professor I have ever had. Spent the first two sessions with his mic and camera off and answered no questions. In the next classes, he assigned quizzes due the next day over material that we had just covered. That is not how to teach or how humans learn. He lost all of our quiz grades at one point and told everyone they needed to retake them.
Absolute joke! He assigns too much homework it throws my schedule off. He gives up to 3 online hw and 3 quizzes in a week including 2 separate written hw where u have to show your work. His lectures don't teach you anything either. He never went in depth.
The professor is always unclear and has terrible communication. He forgets about what assignments we have completed and what we still have to do, and after emailing about it he informs us about it two to three days later. It's like he has Alzheimer's and can't keep track of any of his students.
While the professor is obviously very knowledgeable, he is not the best at conveying the information in a way (for me at least) to comprehend. More often than not, he goes through examples very quickly, and usually does not explain any of the steps he takes to get the end result. He also has a rather strong accent, which makes things even worse.
Absolutely impossible to follow. As other people who have reviewed him have said, he clearly knows what he is talking about when he teaches a class. However, he falls completely short on actually getting this information to the student. He has an incredibly strong accent and speaks quietly so you'll make out 50%-75% of what he's actually saying.
It was hard to understand the lecture because he had a strong accent and way too much homework. He tries to answer the question that is asked but he doesn't really check if students are understand or not. I would not recommend.
Ppl say that he assigns a lot of hw, its a lie. His hw's are the perfect amount and the best for practice. What i will say tho he might assign hw over stuff we didn't go over and assigns a lot of quizzes but he gives you the opportunity to retake them and are just 5% of the final grade. You can do test corrections and that totally save your grade.
Crazy amount of homework and quizzes to do each week, test grades can be improved, but if you're not up to date on the textbook work, online homework and quizzes, you'll most likely get a bad grade on it orginally.
Professor O has a very strong accent. This, combined with him not explaining or going through problems during a lecture at a normal pace makes it miserable to try and understand the lessons. You are better off doing the work on your own and learning it by yourself. Also, he gives pop quizzes that will sometimes not even contain something you learn.
He does have a strong accent, but he's a pretty chill guy. Tests are worth 90% of the grade but he lets you do corrections for half the point amount of the ones you missed. The homework really isn't as bad as people say, the only thing others are right about is his pacing, but other than thar pretty decent class.
He's very informed and goes through the content at a digestible pace. He's also always willing to help if you don't understand something and can sometimes bend deadlines if you're communicative.
This Professor is difficult to understand and does not explain the material well at all. He is a very tough grader and gives no partial credit. Do not take a class with him unless you already know the material or if you enjoy teaching yourself.
prof style of teaching sucks hard to follow through or understand, He gives ALOT of quizzes,HW etc and its more so of a self learning course as his teaching is confusing I had an A in the course but failed my final so got an B however tests are similar to review and he allows the chance to retake the test questions which you failed for half credit.
Professor Owidi's class has a lot of homework and quizzes, but with the help of unstuckstudy and the textbook, it's doable. Definitely attend the lectures to stay on top of the material.
While his lectures can be slow at times, I found him to be an good teacher. He focuses a lot on proofs, which helps build a low-level understanding of the material. The homework for this class can be quite variable; sometimes it can take 20 mins, other times 3 hours. Personally, I didn't find his accent hard to understand.
Everyday you do an module you have homework and a quiz, time consuming, helps with practicing. He can be flexible if you are open with him. Accent Is NOT hard to understand. He teaches by individual packets which I love. ^He does teach fast so be prepared to teach yourself a decent amount No partial credit.
A really great professor! The class was a bit hard a times but he always answered my questions really well and responded to my emails quickly. Make sure to do the practice tests on alexs!!! They are life savers!
While I was hesitant to join his class, after some time I learned that he was extremely kind and caring. He was very willing to help me pass and when I communicated with him, he was very very understanding. He does have very heavy lectures, and a lot of homework.
I mean, its a free A. Thats all im gonna say
Great professor. Really lenient with homework and let you off if you had a valid reason for missing them allowing you chances for redo. Overall easy class if you did the work! :)
I have always struggled with math, so I was very surprised when I passed this class. Yes, there was an insane amount of work, but he really was a great professor who gave us extra credit and really cared a lot. You will pass as long you show him that you are trying and are willing to study a lot.
Very caring about students needs and extends deadlines without hesitation when students need it.
