Don't let his fun personality obscure you're thinking of his tests. He might joke around a lot and have fun in class, but make sure you study really hard for his tests.

fun, informative class...hard tests
Class is alot of fun. He makes class enjoyable. You HAVE to go to class to do good on tests though.
The tests are hard and you can't over think the questions or you will do poorly. I was in the class were the final was so hard it was droped.
Funny guy. Fun class. Hard tests that require a good amt. of studying to do well.
Like everyone else said, hard tests, but an awesome teacher! They're not too hard if you just pay attention to the note packet and read a little bit.
He should be a comedian instead of a teacher. He would tell you how easy his test were and they were not. Study for his tests and dont let his "act" fool you
This guy is hilarious...his tests suck but he makes class fun, so taking his classes is worth it..I've never fallen asleep
Great presenter, very funny, and very straight forward in terms of what you need to study. Tests are challenging and worth A LOT so study very hard for them.
Tries to make the class fun, tests can be diffcult, but not if you keep up on reading, and study prior to them.
Unlike everyone else, I did not like Joel Poor. His humor annoyed me and it was just a total act to get people to like him. His class was somewhat hard and you have to study hard.
Great teacher. Keeps it interesting and has exceptional real-world examples. Those who think his tests are too difficult are the ones who give business majors their current bad reputation. Seriously not difficult.
Lectures were informative and interesting. But exams (midterm is 40% of your grade, final is 60%)had ridiculously specific and completely irrelevant questions, making the class much harder than is probably necessary for a lower level 1 credit course.
A very funny guy, but gets annoying after a while. He spends too much time in lectures digressing and trying to be funny. The questions on the exams are often poorly written and very hard.
Really funny guy, tests are very hard and poorly written. However, I got C's on the first 3 tests, and an A on the final and ended up with a B. There is a huge curve in the class.
I actually wanted to pay attention! He was so funny!
this guy is awesome! makes me laugh every class.
He's ok, funny but kind of hard
His jokes are lame he drags class out for the full time by telling dumb jokes that he finds hilairous. Not that hard though
The most boringest class i have ever taken. He would tell dumb jokes the whole time and he thought he was so funny. Then the tests were full of wquestions i had never seen before
His tests suck. Often felt material was irrelevant.
He's funny but in a somewhat creapy way... Overall not too bad of a class. Oh yeah, and he does the Barbie and Ken thing every semester-- it's not new.
He makes you think the class is going to be easy with his lectures, then asks you questions about things he never lectured on. Tests are very hard, and the questions are tricky. I wish I had not taken this class.

He tells corny jokes but that just makes him funnier. I didn't do so well in the class because the tests sucked, but then again it was first month of first semester, and all you needed to do was pass the class. Either way, know the material, the tests aren't as easy as he says.
He makes the class seem easy but the tests are really quit difficult. However, there is a curve and extra credit available.
He makes you think that the class is a lot easier than it is. Even after you take the first test and know that his questions aren't covered in class, he still tries to tell you that it gets easier and his class isn't hard to pass.
Tests are impossible. Class is near worthless, but you still have to go just in case he gives a specific example of something that will be on the test.
He "tells you what is going to be on the tests" but it appears that 1/50389 of those hints aren't on the test...that's awesome Joel

He is a terrible teacher! He tells you it is going to be really easy and it isn't at all. He gives stupid pointless lectures and never puts any of the stuff on the test except maybe one question of an example that is really obscure, so you don't remember it anyway. Joel Poor Sucks!
easy class just study and read

doesn't have a clue as to how he is teaching
Professor Poor makes the class interesting and fun.

Doesn't teach that well but everything is well organized in the notes so not that hard of a class. plus he is pretty entertaining not that bad of a class
The class is well organized, just study the packet. I think he wore some sort of pastel color every single day. Very entertaining.
He's funny and entertaining. But where are his test questions coming from? He asks questions of picky details that aren't even the main subject. Study in detail for this class. But sometimes, he reuses the questions from sample exams.

study the notes
Good classes and keeps people engaged. only thing wrong with class is that tests are very unpredictable and thats basically all you are graded on.
He was a good teacher. The only thing I can suggest is to go to class. He uses a lot of examples from class on the exam. If he repeats anything more than once, write it down and highlight it. Most likely, it will be on the exam
he makes you think its going to be an easy class, but its not, you really have to study and know everything he tells you to know, there was no final so that was nice, and the curves helped, but if you go, take good notes, and study its not that bad and you should be able to get a c
Easy and interesting class. The tests are not as easy as the notes may seem. Make sure to go to class and take very good notes. The tests are based on his examples in class.
I hate this class. The lectures are dull and just seem to go on and on and on. The tests are just bizarre. No matter how much you study, you just can't be prepared for the exams. They're just nit picky. I dread what this will do to my average. Thanks, buddy.
I don't know what these people are talking about...this guy had the easiest tests I have ever taken. If you read, you're golden. If you are illiterate, you may have problems. But in this case, you probably are in the wrong place...something to think about.
Easy class, just read the packet and take a few notes. I'd recommend reading over all the material again before the test, because there isn't much. Curves were about 5 points on tests (each being worth 50 points), thanks to the hoards of stupid kids in the class, so it helps.
Aweful teacher. Rambles on in class and flirts with girls. Doesn't talk at all about marketing only about himself. The class however is very easy if you read the book. Don't go to class b/c the notes are totally uselss, just read.
Don't let him fool you with his jokes. While class can be entertaining, there is a lot of material. He pulls a lot of questions from the book only and uses examples specifically given in class. He tries to trick you by giving answers like "all the above" ,"none of the above" or " a and b only" which sucks! Be prepared to actually study some.
This class well where to start, Joels jokes are terrible, O and so are his tests!!!!! I hope you enjoy hell expect to see none of the above or all of the above on just about every answer!!!

great guy. he is really funny in class and uses great examples that get your attention and really help you learn the material.
Joel Poor's comedy hour is by far the funniest, yet hardest class. His tests are impossible and I've heard his final is meant to screw you. He uses good examples and as long as you are in class and do the readings, you will do okay on the tests. His tests are hard though.
His tests are pretty tricky, but class is entertaining and enjoyable. Yes, his jokes are bad, but his goofiness is entertaining.
He is extremely funny and will keep you entertained all hour, which helps if you don't like the material. His examples are easy to understand and he uses most of them on the exams. They are HARD. Read the book. Go to EVERY class. Even if you study your butt off, the tests are harder than you thought. The curve helps...but just be prepared.
He is the funniest teacher I've ever had and keeps class extremely entertaining. He uses great examples and makes you laugh all the time (and it's all stuff related to the subject). However, his tests are very difficult and tricky. You must study a lot for his exams in order to do well. If you put in the effort, this is a very fun class.
Worst class ever. I went to every class, studied for hours before the test, and still managed to only pull off a C. As an A student in the honors college, this was definitely my most hated class at Mizzou!
went to class maybe 3 times the whole semester (excluding exam days)....still managed to pull off an B. study notes and make sure you go when there's a guest speaker, but other than that this class is a waste of time.
Pretty funny guy and made class somewhat interesting. The material is very easy to comprehend, but he tries to trick you with his test questions, using a lot of examples from class.
Lecture makes the class seem easy; but I warn you his tests are very hard and requires a lot of studying. Be prepared and go to class. He will use a lot of examples from class. Besides that he is a great teacher and makes class interesting with his jokes and such.
I have so much love for Joel Poor - his class is by far the most fun I've been in. He's a genuinely nice guy and he really likes what he does. That being said, don't be fooled by his easy-going manner. Tests are HARD and you MUST read the book. I made the mistake of slacking off for the first test and it's turned out to be a real GPA killer.
Love this guy! Really made class interesting, great examples. However, don't mistake fun for seriousness..the exams are HARD. Even if you go to all the classes, be prepared to really study. He got me there! Sneaky snake.
Joel Poor's jokes are... well poor, but he keeps class interesting and keeps you laughing (with him or at him). He is very willing to help you if you ask and the tests aren't too hard, just do the reading before class just in case he asks questions. He curves the tests quite a bit and if you do what you are expected to you should get a good grade.
Joel is a stand-up comedian, not an advocate for education. After the laughs from his 400-person audience when real questions arise he's no help, not to mention downright unreasonable, when it comes to individual student's needs. Enjoy the comedic act while you can. Find a way to only have him once.
This class was completely useless, I didn't learn anything. He didn't take the class seriously, yet the tests were very hard. Test questions reflected discussions from class as well as concepts from the book. I hoped to actually get a good taste of the business school, but the professor did not take the class seriously.
He makes learning marketing fun. His tests are tricky if you don't go to class. He tests in a way that makes sure you know the answer for sure and won't talk yourself into other answers. His class was hilarious too!
Do not take this course online. I am assuming you need to be present to understand his teaching methods. The only thing I have learned from this course is that asphalt isn't reliable. If I filled in all "c's" I would have probably done better. Trick questions? Really? Why not make your students right essays or short answer questions.
Joel Poor is simply the best. He is hilarious, knows his subject matter, and truly has an interest in his students (despite how many are in his classes). The course is challenging yet his teachings style makes the work definitely worth it. Take Joel Poor for any class you can!
Joel Poor is the nicest guy. But BEWARE: his tests are deceptively hard. Lecture is very dumbed down compared to what he tests on. Read the book twice. Also, the lecture hall is filled with about 600 business school bros so coming to class is hard to stomach as a journalism major.
Joel poor is my favorite professor this semester. His lectures are interesting, and he keeps class fun. His test can be hard, but just study the vocab and read the chapter/articles before the test and you'll get a decent grade. Attendance is not required, but he gives test questions and answers in class.
He's a good teacher. He makes things funny and interesting. You have to go to class to do good on the test although attendance is not mandatory.
Very fun class. I thought it was really easy and the notes were very helpful. Poor kept the class very entertaining and made me want to come every week. The topics covered really gave an overview of the business world. Definitely recommend this class if you are even thinking about Business.
I loved attending class. He is a funny guy with lots of job experiences with stories to go with it. His test are extremely hard even if you know the stuff front to back. Tries to trick you and make you second guess yourself. Don't know anybody that got an A or high B.
Too early to pay attention and it?s only on Fridays so you will never want to go. He says some pretty funny stuff if you?re awake. Tests are hard. Go to class, especially when you?re discussing an article. Read the book thoroughly. Content seems easy but it?s harder than it seems!
I loved him. He was a very good teacher and his class was very interesting and taught extremely well.
Joel is pretty hilarious and made me want to go to class. Don't underestimate the course though! It's not as simple as it seems! Study thoroughly for the tests. He hooks you up with big curves though so that is nice.
He is a very interesting guy, and more than willing to offer help when you need it. He may not be the best teacher on the planet, but he's not trying to make you give up, he tries to instruct. If you need help deciding what to go into, ask him. He's got experience in Advertising, Engineering and Business. He'll help you out.
Tests were REALLY hard. Poor is very funny and a nice guy, but that didn't really make up for how difficult it was.
He's one of the coolest and funniest teachers you'll have. The class seemed like the easiest thing ever but the test are very difficult for what was covered in the class, you have to read a lot more then whats in his powerpoint.
Great guy, funny as hell but his tests are impossible. DO NOT let the first one get you. It may seem easy but you have to study like crazy.
Nice guy but he expects you to have every inch of lecture notes and book chapters memorized on the test. Don't let his nice personality fool you, the tests are hard.
Very funny and enthusiastic but his test are difficult! Our class average was like a low C! He gets off topic a lot but don't let that fool you! Pay attention to everything and study the textbook as much as you can!
Joel is really cool, class is fun, but tests are ridiculous. If you're comparing to someone like Tim Wade, Joel is infinitely more fun, interesting, and a good person. But his tests are much harder as well. You will laugh every class, and cry after every test.
A really cool guy to listen to in lecture but the exams are extremely difficult due to wording and the depth of the content you are expected to know/learn on your own.
Hes very funny but his tests are impossible! Plus there are no other grades in the class. I only passed because of the curve.
He's an interesting professor, just not exactly the most informative...tests are unbelievably hard
His exams did not match his lectures and the questions on his exams were quite confusing.
He's nice but after awhile he gets annoying. Test are impossible! I don't know how people pass with an A or even a B in this class.
He is really funny and tests are not impossible as everybody says, as long as you go to most classes and read your textbook before an exam you should be fine. Really interesting class!
Joel Poor is one of the coolest professors ever, but his two tests are extremely difficulty. Keep up with the readings and study hard!
Class was enjoyable, until test days. There are things on the exam that are not covered in class, so reading the chapters is required. The exam scores were curved. Two projects that were relatively simple to complete.
I thought this class was a lot easier than people here say. Poor is a great professor and a riot to have class with. The lectures are extremely important to go to! DO NOT SKIP. Read the book and you will be fine. I got mid B's on both tests but didn't study much at all. Really this is not that hard and its fun. Just do the reading and go to class.
Poor, is extremely funny, can easily get off task during lecture but he was very knowledgeable. You could tell that he knew what he was talking about but the information in lecture was so general you couldn't pass the class with just that information. Reading the book and asking and asking the TA questions was a MUST in order to pass his class.
Joel was extremely vague and I did not learn anything new in his class besides the fact that he tests over very specific examples from the book and from class that may or may not be important or valuable to what you are actually trying to learn.
Extremely hard class. He makes his tests so specific that you have to know a random example given by a classmate. The whole class is his comedy show and he essentially teaches you nothing. Lowest grade I have received in college thus far.
Teacher is extremely funny and cool, however his tests are not. The tests are very tough, and it requires you to definitely read the book. Just study the book meticulously, and enjoy the lectures and you will be fine :)
He's a funny guy but his tests are impossible. I studied days in advance for hours per day and still only managed a C on his tests. And there's only 3 grades in the whole class- 2 tests and one quiz.
Joel is a fantastic teacher and his lectures are interesting, if you are taking this class you obviously have some interest in marketing so you will enjoy it. His jokes always have me laughing in class, even though it's an early class. The tests are NOT as hard as everyone says, but you HAVE to go to class and you HAVE to read the book.
Joel is a great guy. He made it clear that he was there to be a resource for you if you needed anything in your college career. He is hilarious and keeps the class engaged. I practically aced the class, but I had a natural interest in the subject. If business is your thing, his class is designed for your success. HIGHLY recommend.
The class itself isn't bad at all, but the tests are rather difficult. The class is only out of 100pts so know everything like the back of your hand if you want an A.
Learned nothing. Tests questions are designed for failure. Instructor emphasizes more so on in class examples, rather than knowledge of concepts, for exam questions. I needed this class for graduation, but it was for sure a waste of money for the amount I actually learned. To bad there wasn't another professor for this course...
I enjoyed this class thoroughly because Joel Poor is such an entertaining individual and the subject matter is somewhat interesting and easy to comprehend. His tests are difficult to say the least. Not too bad until the final. Lot of "all the above" "two of the above"
His lectures are the greatest! Exams were difficult though because it is all reading the book.
Not an easy class, but the material was relevant and time spent in class was always time spent laughing. Very helpful if you go and speak with him in office hours.
He is a great teacher but you have to read the book and study for tests. There are only two tests and really pay attention to class examples because they will sneak up as test questions! READ THE BOOK. Half of the tests are from the book! Study and you will do fine.
He spends most of the class asking for examples instead of actually teaching the material. The tests are ridiculously hard and 90% of your grade is based on test scores. Either take the class online or at another school.
Lectures hilarious. Tests Extremely hard. Joel's the kind of guy you'd want to have a beer at a bar with. However, the tests are hard and cover both the book and random things said in lectures. You'll have a laugh, learn a lot, but might not get a good grade.
Joel is a great professor but you absolutely have to pay attention during lecture. Dr. Poor tends to quickly slip in important information and lessons into sometimes irrelevant stories but that's how he catches students off guard. It's tricky but if you pay attention the ENTIRE time you will have no problems.
He is very helpful to reach out and help students.
His lectures are funny, but very vague. You have to read the book and go to class in order to pass the tests because he uses references from both.
Yeah he's funny and all but that gets old real fast when the tests are extremely difficult and tricky for no reason and he spends class time joking around and getting off topic. The material shouldn't be hard but when it's not covered in class and shows up on the tests it makes the class extremely frustrating. Would not recommend.
Joel Poor is hilarious and a lot of fun but don't let that fool you. His tests are impossible and many questions are examples used in lectures SO DON'T SKIP CLASS. There are only two exams and reading the textbook is a MUST to do decent on them.
Absolutely terrible. The tests are purposely designed to trip you up. Tests on the most random details in the textbook and on random examples in class. Also, the tests have a lot of "all of the above".
Exams are tricky.
Joel Poor was a great lecturer. He engaged the class consistently through examples. Beware, he uses these examples as test questions (ex. Based on what we discussed in class, which of the following companies would be a good example of a ____?). Attendance is not monitored, therefore not mandatory, but you should go as much as possible. Good guy.
Nearly every class period he will go on a tangent that has nothing to do with the material, which he expects you to memorize for the test. Tests are impossible. Half of the questions are direct quotes from the book. Rode the curve to a C+.
have taken three classes with him.. and he is by far my favorite teacher I've ever had a mizzou. ya he's hard. but if you study you will do well. also he is so funny
This class is not going to be easy, and anyone who has taken it will tell you the same thing. Tests are some of the most difficult ones I've taken, and he aims to trick you. Your best bet is to memorize everything -- he tests minute details rather than useful course concepts.
Joel was hilarious and kept class light. He was an entertaining professor and never bore you to death. But that doesn't mean to not take his class seriously. You really have to pay attention to the notes and attend class or you will not do well. His tests are VERY tricky and studying ahead of time is a must.
Horrible professor. Focuses on small details from class where he usually goes off on a tangent. Go to class. Exams are pretty much impossible so make sure you memorize the entire book in order to know the exact definitions. Don't take this class unless absolutely necessary. Would not recommend. Doesn't really teach the information that's on exams.
Marketing 3000 is basically synonymous with Joel Poor. Not to give you any illusions it is a hard class. But Dr. Poor is hilarious and lectures actually aren't that bad. If you read the book, pay attention in class and do the homework then this class is definitely passable. He also gives extra credit for participating in class.
Joel Poor as a person is great. His lectures are really funny and he is a very approachable person who is willing to answer questions. The downside of his class is that the tests are very hard and you have to read and take really good notes to get a good grade. He will test on the smallest details and class examples so be sure to pay attention
Class is enjoyable and easy... except the tests... the tests are way off the wall and you will need to basically know all the lecture material and major topics from the book. Overall its a very enjoyable class. Be wary of the second test.
Very hard tests- just the way things are worded and how it is expected you've memorized everything from the textbook and lectures and I mean EVERYTHING. Interesting guy and lectures, but very hard for a class that should be very straightforward.
Joel is always prepared for class. Although he wastes class time sometimes with his off topic funny rants, he honestly cares about the well-being of his students. The tests require specific lecture material but overall fairly easy.
90% of lectures are irrelevant, borderline-inappropriate rants, and 10% useful information. The majority of the grade is dominated by three tests; each chock-full of "two of the above", "three of the above", or "none of the above" choices, which measure luck, not marketing knowledge. Take this class elsewhere and transfer it. Poor, please retire.
He makes lectures interactive with the student and uses really good examples to help you learn the material. His personality makes it fun to learn about marketing. He wrote the book that you buy, so there isn't any extra reading which is nice! His tests are hard, but if you go to lecture and study like you should, you will get an A!
His last name accurately describes my experience in his class.
I struggled with MKTG 3000 with Joel, but MKTG 4440 is completely different. It is a smaller class that is super laid back and fun. There is only one test all semester and it is only worth 20 points. Most of your grade is participation and it is all opinion based participation. I would recommend this class to anyone at Mizzou. It is very easy.
Really nice and funny guy but his tests suck due to the wording he uses. He also likes to ask about examples he gave in class and frequently uses "two/none/all of the above" questions.
The Best Professor after three years. the lectures are almost always hilarious and interesting. very test heavy and they are not the easiest. read the book and show up to class is your best bet. other than that homework is gimme points. +2% EC for participation. he is a great guy with real world experience and learns a lot of names. really cares
For being an early morning class he did a good job at keeping the class awake by being funny and making his lectures interesting. His test are hard so many sure you study the book and take notes. If you participate 4 times throughout the semester you can get 2% extra credit. He also gives a few easy assignments to help your grade!
Wish there was another professor teaching this course. He is very knowledgeable, but his teaching style made class very unpleasant. The lectures are usually painfully awkward and he makes lots of inappropriate jokes. Would ramble on about topics unrelated to the lecture. He recently started providing reviews before exams, which were really helpful.
Smart but also seems like not much of a difficult prof. Would have preferred someone who wanted more from their students.
Lectures are way too long, and could be much shorter Joel likes to talk ALOT. He gives extra credit everyday if you speak in class. The tests are probably the hardest tests I have taken at Mizzou. I read the textbook all the way through & attended all of the lectures and never got about a C on the exams. Not much homework in the class.
Honestly, this class was an easy A. If you just attend most of the time you're fine, and he gives up to 2% extra credit just for participating like literally on questions such as "name a store you've shopped at." So. There's not really an excuse there. Exams can be tough but he curves them. Non business major and I did just fine.
I have heard mixed reviews about Joel, but none of them prepared me for his elusive teaching style. This man will spend 30 minutes lecturing on some random topic that has absolutely nothing to do with the course. He also picks on students a fair amount so be prepared to be laughed at by 200+ people. Take this online with another professor!!
Joel is a funny and kind teacher, but do not take this class expecting an Easy A. The tests in this class are poorly written and incredibly difficult. You can study hard and still do mediocre. This especially hurts since the three exams are basically your only grades in the class that matter. The content isn't tough in class but there's a lot of it
Hilarious teacher who is easy to listen to. Has a lot of knowledge and knows how to make it applicable to college students. Gives easy homework assignments that are basically gimme points. His tests are generally difficult so you have to read the book. But if semi challenging tests scare you, maybe just don't take any 3000 level class and drop out.
Most of what you learn in this class will be from his textbook and from his lecture slides. He uses lecture time to make inappropriate jokes and goes on long rants about things unrelated to Marketing. Most of your points come from 3 exams and they're all curved. Don't expect to get much from this class.
His mind wanders a bit but his jokes make it worth going to class. You won't learn much but he does test on in-class examples. As long as you read the book you are set to do well on the exams - he also curves them!
Dr. Poor is hilarious and entertaining and keeps the class engaged. However, if you want to pass the test you HAVE to read the textbook- the lecture barely covers anything. Most of the lecture is him making jokes and asking for examples. He walks around the room and talks to everyone so be prepared.
God awful teacher. Spends entire class time trying to make jokes and the lecture hall has to awkwardly laugh at each terrible joke to get him to move on. This teacher has your entire grade based on about 4 quizzes and three tests for the entire semester. If you are reading this Joel please assign more, and no more jokes about being a crackhead.
I am a B average student and I got warned about how hard this class was. I soon found out that as long as you attend lecture and MEMORIZE the textbook, you're good to go. I spent about 6 hours studying the night before for the first exam, literally just memorizing my notes in the book and got a 100%. He's an easy going guy and very approachable.
very funny and nice guy. tests were the kind where it could be multiple answers so make sure you really know definitions and concepts. if you put in the time, you will do just fine. also make sure to participate in EC at the beginning of semester because he will slow down on opportunities as the semester goes on.
I've found that the reason post people like Joel is because he's funny, but his humor doesn't make up for his lack of organization. This guy is all over the place. Lectures are out of order so the note packet doesn't match up with them at all. Also, he is such a slow talker that I had to put all lecture videos on at least 1.5x speed to stay focused
Honestly there was just online lectures to watch and you could write your notes in the textbook. Professor Poor definitely tried to make the class more interesting with his humour and was always helpful. Do the work and it's an easy A because grading isn't difficult.
90% of the class was just him linking a different professors work or even lecture. I think I have heard a total of 10 minutes of original academia from this guy. If you need the class for credit then take it but dont expect to learn
If you don't go to class you won't pass. He takes exam question from in person lectures, not all the slides from the notebook are what he discusses in class. You need to memorize only his opinion for tests, not yours, class has only 6 grades- 4 being exams, no homework just lectures and notes. Good luck to you I am an all A student and almost faile
His test questions are incredibly specific, for example, what company did I use as an example for (topic). I took this class over COVID and I forgot about exam 2 due to mental health. I emailed him about my situation and he let me retake the test. Very kind of him. At the same time, he's a weird guy and talks SO SLOW. Thank you 1.5x Panopto speed
Easily one of the worst professors I've ever had. He makes you pay for the slides and his own book so that he can spend the entirety of the lecture making jokes that no one laughs at and throwing out maybe 2 questions that will be on the test. (The test is also word for word from the book so make sure you memorize all 40 pages every test).
My least favorite professor I've had at Mizzou. Needed this for credit & he makes you buy the note packet (which didn't even match half the lectures) and his book which the tests are word for word from. He goes super fast and spends so much time on tangents, then uses the tangents on the exams. Everyone I know has a C or is failing.
While Professor Poor is enthusiastic about the subject of Marketing, his lack of organization in his classes makes it extremely tough to succeed, no matter how much effort/studying you put in. Purchasing the course packet and notes does not help much when it comes to doing well on exams, as his lectures often went off-topic.
The thing that is sad about Poor teaching this course is that anyone who put forth any effort could earn an easy A but with his lack of organization and poorly written tests, it's nearly impossible to do well. Pretty much everyone I have spoken to has a terrible grade in the class. The class needs more assignments and needs to be restructured.
Did not like this class. Only graded on tests, participation, and outside of class surveys. If you do not do the surveys, you lose like 5% of your overall grade. Unclear.
I dropped it half way through the in-person 16 week course. All my classmates struggled, got C’s or lower, especially for journalism students it’s not easy. One of the worst teachers I’ve ever had for a class. Unorganized, all over the place with tangents not relating to the course, etc. Not sure how he’s still teaching.
Unorganized, poorly written textbook + exams, making bad jokes, etc. the list goes on. The guy thinks and acts like a comedian during class and will just tell you to read + learn from his own textbook (the book that he wrote) to do good on the exams. If you have to take him, best of luck to ya!
His lectures are bad and have little information, but just enough that you're missing out on examples if you don't go. The textbook (that he made) doesn't even have all the info on the exams. The first 2 exams were survivable but bad, but the final was difficult to simply be difficult. The average before the curve was a 53% Only take if you have to
Prof Poor is running a scam here. He writes the textbook and sells it through the bookstore and does the same with his lecture slides. The slides are not available on canvas, you have to buy them. The canvas page is a blank template. His tests are horribly written. His lectures stray off-topic and are very hard to follow and he makes unfunny jokes.
Just god awful
Professor Poor's lectures are painfully slow paced. While I will concede that the material is not difficult for the class I was taking, the lectures made the class nearly unbearable (to the point that I would skip because they were a waste of time). He's funny, but he drones on and on about topics other than the class content. Not a good lecturer
He has been my least favorite professor so far. I had him last semester and I hated the class. He spends too much time and energy on trying to be funny. The notes don't make sense and he heavily relies on the textbook that he wrote himself. Exams are the only graded assignments in the class, which I struggle with so that made it way more difficult
He uses class examples as test questions so attendance in lectures in mandatory. He has 5 grades the entire year and 3 of them are tests. I would definitely never take one of his classes again, but he keeps you entertained during class with corny jokes
No online resources. Slideshows are very outdated and not up to the standard one would expect at UM. Gets very off-topic during lectures, is an inefficient and unfocused professor. Your grade is 3 exams and 2 assignments. The exams are written incoherently and lazily. Poor unfortunately ruins a great course. Course would be better taught by a TA.
Joel Poor is the worst prof I have ever experienced. Go to lectures, don't go to lectures it does not matter. If you are a good exam taker that's all you need. His exams are trick questions only and they are 75% of the final grade. The book for the class is necessary as most questions are taken from it. Did I mention he wrote the book?
It's ironic that Joel's last name is Poor, as it pretty much sums up this class (the jokes end here though). Tests are so hard, some of the questions are based on the things he SAID in class (not in the slides). He also gets sidetracked so easily, making lectures much longer than they need to. Don't even get me started on the textbook that HE wrote
It is shocking Joel is the only professor who teaches this class that is required by so many students. He does not care about how you do in the class (I had covid during his class and when I asked for the lecture notes he told me to get them from a classmate). Your whole grade is just exams that are solely based on the book he wrote. Good luck.
Joel is still Joel, and if you can't stand him, this class isn't for you. He will still say incredibly offensive and demeaning things to women and POC. However, it's incredibly easy and I did learn a thing or two. The projects were fun if you don't mind getting stuck with students who won't help. If you can stick it out, I suggest this class.
Joel is hilarious, every lecture the students are laughing. He does not assign any homework so your grade is based on 3 noncumulative exams. If you do not go to class to fill in blanks in your workbook you will be very confused. Harder than it seems if you don't attend class regularly.
Couldn't say enough positive things about Poor. He's extremely knowledgable and a great lecturer. For Marketing 3000, if you go to class, you will pass. Barely studied for my exams and got 98-100% on all of them. He basically tells you what is going to be on the exam if you just go to class. Lectures are super engaging and interactive. 10/10 prof
I don't even know where to start with Joel. His lectures are pretty entertaining, to say the least. Be ready to read the textbook (which he wrote himself). Only graded on 5 assignments the entire semester.
First time having Joel Poor. I heard mixed reviews about him, so I decided to take a shot with his class. Although he's a funny guy, the lecture's are like a comedy show gone bad. The course is 3 exams and two, maybe 3, assignments. The exams are like trying to open Pandora's box, it doesn't make sense. Tale at your own risk, its a requirement lol.
Would not recommend this course, but: 1. CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR THE "Trulaske Marketing Research" INFO. It's worth 5% of your grade, everyone I know didn't even know it was a part of the class because Poor never mentions it in class. 2. You MUST go and pay attention to lectures bc half of the test questions are about "in class we discussed" topics.
Not sure why he's so disliked by Mizzou students, I think he has done a great job of teaching this semester and he makes his lectures memorable through telling jokes and providing plenty of examples. His tests can be quite difficult if you aren't a business major though so make sure you study when it comes test time, every exam is weighted heavily.
There are 3 exams that should be broken up into 4. The first two are easy: the 3rd is over 6 chapters which is crazy. You have to read the book and fill out the lecture bool. Overall, great guy but the lectures are sometimes pointless. I recommend going to class because he uses examples he says on the tests and fill in the blanks in the booklet.
Go to class if you want to pass. Most of the exam questions have to deal with super specific examples given in class. Take notes on everything. Don't be like me who failed because I didn't do this. Exam questions are very weird and difficult, even if you understand the concepts, the way he writes the questions makes it harder.
I went to class and studied the material and examples from class and was still terrified I would fail the entire time because I'm not a great test taker. The tests account for the majority of your grade and there are only a few small opportunities for points elsewhere. As a strat comm student, I'm glad this is getting removed from our curriculum.
This is the worst professor I've ever had. You are graded on 5 things (3 exams and 2 assignments). The lectures are a waste of time because he rambles, makes fun of students, and doesn't talk about content. He also doesn't give you any resources. My advice: buy the textbook (which he wrote btw), don't buy the blank slides (just take your own notes)
Worst professor ever. Just keeps yapping about random things, rambles on about life, nothing to do with the content we need to know. Skipping one lecture however, may make you miss out on a million things he is going to put on the exam. Be sure to take notes of examples because he expects you to remember what he was talking about in his exams.
By far one of the worst professors I have ever had in all of my years. Lectures that are absolute nonsense, a book that he wrote himself (that has an embarrassing amount of typos by the way, seriously did he even edit this?) unhelpful with questions, spends most of the class teaching nonsense that makes no sense & nothing he teaches is on the exam.
Do not be fooled by people saying he is "funny" or a "nice guy." That's the thing, he is. But what they forget is THAT DOESN'T MAKE HIM A GOOD PROFESSOR. He is an awful one in fact. Rambling for entire classes, he will sometimes sprinkle useful info in. You better memorize everything he says, the book, and the slides or you're cooked.
Coming to class helps prepare for exams because he would sometimes tell you answers for the exam, but he wasted a lot of class time. Exams make up most of your grade. This class does not take up much time, but you need to read the textbook and his lecture slides to do well on exams. No final and exams aren't cumulative.
A marketing class should NOT be this difficult.
Complete opposite to marketing 3000. Class is discussion based so if you talk you receive an A. Only one exam thats super easy. I really enjoy Joel and his funny jokes and humor. Most people hate his 3000 class but most people love 4440.
Joel is the kind of Professor that you remember after you finish the class. He doesn't bore you with useless info but instead he encourages class discussion in an open environment. Truly the best Professors I have had during my 4 years at MU. I will take many things from his classes into my professional career. I hope our paths cross again some day
I dont even know where to begin. By far the worst and hardest class ive ever taken here at Mizzou, the lectures are a waste of time usually he just gets sidetracked and talks about random garbage for 15 minutes. Memorize the textbook he makes you buy even though I didnt find it to be much help on the exams which are brutal. Dont forget the research
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Impossible exams that you need to memorize every little thing said in class and the book (which was not proofread). 3 exams, 1 quiz, and 2 homeworks were the entire class.
Professor teaches the material he wrote in his own books which include several typos and no sources. His presentations poorly correlate to his notes and are also designed poorly and are difficult to read. There are so few grades in this course that most points come from exams.
Very bad at teaching there were only 2 things of homework and the class was run very poorly.
I have never truly hated a professor until Joel. This man rewrote the book and made a notes booklet so he could profit from it. In his lectures, he gets extremely distracted by the most random shit. He has no extra credit and the class is based on 3 50 point exams, 2 20-point projects, a 20 point quiz, and go to research labs for 10% of your grade.
Joel has been the worst professor ive had at mizzou. I was interested in switching to a marketing major but after Joel Poor I want nothing to do with that class. The class grading consists 3 exams 3 hw assignments and a free 20/20 quiz. make sure you listen to every word he says in class even when he rambles theres a high chance itll be on the exam
Joel Poor is the worst professor I have ever had. He talks about himself 80% of class time. Tests are not conceptual. Instead he expects you to remember a tiny fact from either the textbook he wrote himself or an example from class 3 weeks prior. There are 2 assignments so no area to improve if you get a bad test score. Also no extra credit offered
This class was pretty easy to understand for non-Business majors. You are only graded on your exams, lab participation, and like 3 other assignments. The exams are pretty broad on the material they cover, so you really need to study the entire textbook and lecture notes before you take it.
Tough class with a lot of memorization. Attend every lecture and read the textbook closely to prepare for exams. Unstuck ai was helpful for study prep alongside other resources.
I dropped this class last semester because these reviews scared me. now i'm taking it. Joel is a sweet man, but he does get side tracked a lot, it's funny. If you just pay attention in class, study your notes, and read the book, the class is so easy. don't let these people scare you, i'm guessing they didn't study. he curves tests a lot too
Joel is very funny and kind. The lectures can sometimes feel useless, but they aren't boring, he's a fun guy. Attending lectures is VERY important, there's important examples he says in class that WILL be on exams.Tests are kinda hard, you have to read the entire textbook+take notes of all the specific examples.Sometimes they are hard to study for.
Really weird class but not very hard. You have to speak 5 times in class throughout the semester so sit it front the first week and answer questions then never go again. I've never lectures organized this poorly (lol) before. Joel just rambles on and on about weird stuff. Read the book he wrote, and find resources with example test questions.
Joel Poor is not a helpful and insightful professor. Every lecture he rambles on about random things. There is no point in going to the lectures because all he does is ramble. There are also no points other than exams. There are three 50 point exams and only two other assignments, thats it. He also wrote the textbook himself and it is awful.
There's a difference between good professor and good person. He lacks the former. An example of a test question is “ What is an example of innate need that a student said in class.” Very poorly designed course with no material outside of lectures. The book available is written by the professor and it shows, with spelling/grammar mistakes every page
The professors use their status to mask insecurity, making courses harder to boost their ego. While lectures may be interesting, he hides behind professionalism, especially with tenure. If possible, drop the class or switch professors. Or use study groups and outside resources. Education should be about learning, not catering to a professor's ego.
Joel Poor does not teach well. He often gets sidetracked, and tends to make distasteful jokes. I would look him up, there was a news piece on him. If this class is required for you, good luck. If it's not and you wanted just a fun marketing elective- DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Worst professor ever. He rambles on about random stuff and makes very odd jokes. Attending lecture is pointless. There are only three assignments and the rest of your grade depends on exams. Exams are worded very POORly and this is just the worst class ever. DO not take a class with him, you will regret it.
Even if he isn't the hardest professor, he sucks. He rambles and goes into the class with the attitude of wanting some people to fail. He called me out in the middle of his lecture with 300 people saying that I was late when I just went to the bathroom. He just thinks embarrassing people is fun.
His ego was the reason his class was difficult. I enjoy the class material but he presented it in a way that made learning difficult.
It's a very test-based course, STUDY STUDY STUDY. I would review lectures and read the textbook as well. The wording can be challenging to interpret on his exams, but as long as you are prepared, you should be fine.
Test heavy, make sure to review lectures and textbooks. He does graciously curve but don't depend on it. I thought the material was interesting to learn as well.
There were 4 total assignments in this 8-week course. 2 of them instruct you to use ChatGPT. This entire class felt very low effort from the professor's side. There were 2 tests, each 60 questions. The tests are where I struggled since there was practically no teaching from him, it was up to you to figure it out. Wouldn't recommend him online.
Joel is an okay professor...but he definitely shouldn't be teaching classes of 500 students at a time. I never know what I needed to learn in his classes, and everything felt very unorganized. The marketing material itself SEEMED easy, but for some reason those exams still found a way to confuse me.
He rambles on about random topics he makes up. I have always been an A student with maybe a B a semester. I got a 40% on the first exam because the book was barley on the test and the content is made up Joel poor nonsense.
fun guy. Not a challenging class just read the books.
Joel really only cares about your class participation in this course. Class is mandatory but if you just talk in class and have a decent group project, you will be fine. He is also absolutely hilarious and loves to make jokes in class that sometimes don't make any sense.
I know a lot of people don't like Joel in MRKT 3000, but he is awesome in MRKT 4440. Class is very discussion based so you get to hear from your peers a lot. Almost every class is entertaining. Joel makes jokes to keep the lecture light. This discussion based class is SO much better than sitting and being lectured at.
I actually enjoy the lectures and the content of marketing 3000, but joel makes it impossible with his exams that dont correlate with class content and there isnt much opportunity outside of exams to raise your grade.
You can get by in the class if you read and take notes from the textbook. Don't expect him to be lenient on assignments, even if you encounter a technical error he will NOT regrade an assignment. His knowledge on marketing is outdated and inaccurate at times, and half of lectures are on AI and not marketing.
Weirdest business class I've taken. 50% of your grade is automatic 100s, but the exams I have nightmares from his exams. They're based on his textbook (which he doesn't lecture on). Most questions are "which statement is correct?" followed by 5 unrelated sentences. Unless you're Joel Poor himself, they're a living hell.
Joel is tough. While his lectures are fine, he makes great jokes and has lots of industry experience, he shouldn't be a professor. His exams are awful, and there are barely any chances to get your grade up. Getting one bad exam grade tanked my final grade, and he doesn't round up. All I can say is READ THE TEXTBOOK and pray
I want to start off by saying Joel Poor seems like a great guy. He is hilarious and super kind, which helped me pay attention in class. However, his exams mostly aren't based on concepts, they're just super random questions. For ex. “Which example did I use from class.” I had a 4.0 before this semester but will be receiving an A- from this class.
He is a horrible teacher, rambles on and on, and does not allow for any makeup or late work no matter the circumstance. There's two exams that impact grade heavily and barely any assignments. The class is centered on a textbook he wrote, that's overly complicated & useless; and I found countless typos in it. Test questions are extremely specific
The best word to describe Joel Poor is OK. Get an A on all the homework and other assignments and get B-C on exams and you'll pass the class, class itself is weird and he ends it whenever he feels like it but he is OK
I wish Mizzou had different Marketing 3000 teacher options. Joel Poor rambles on during his lecture and does not actually teach. The textbook used in class is one he wrote himself- which has many typos and does not actually help you learn anything. You have 5 assignments all semester, and 2 tests which heavily impact your grade. Good luck with him.
