He's HALARIOUS!!! A really funny, crazy guy. When it comes to academics, he's really hard to read. You don't know when to take him seriously and he changes his mind a ton! He's really into youtube videos and he hates morning classes.
Very funny man. He definitely understands economics and is an economist no doubt. He's always available for help, and just keeps you laughing in class. He lets you know what is important and what isn't. Goofy man, but not boring at all.
Teacher trys way too hard to be funny and appeal to the drug and alcohol induced side of life. If you came to school to have fun and not learn anything hes the guy for you, but if you want to be taught something relevant or in a way you can understand it then you are screwed because he is terrible at that.
This guy is AWESOME! He is so funny. I think econ is an extremely boring subject and I know that I would never come to class if I were taking it with anyone else. He uses wild examples and keeps it entertaining. He is also HOT!
AWESOME TEACHER!!! Take him if you can...he is so funny and random so you're always interested in what he's going to say next. Study the study guides that he gives and you should be okay!!
Best teacher ever. Plays YouTube videos that relate to economics during the class. He takes it slow if people don't understand and is willing to help explain anything that people don't understand. Gives a lot of extra credit for coming by his office and asking him about the class. I made a 75 on one test and ended up making a 91 after extra credit.

Joel Potter is great. I enjoyed going to his class and appreciate the interest he takes in his students :)
Awesome and hilarious professor. Book, homework, quizzes, and experiments are online. The tests are difficult.. just have to study and attend class.
This guy is really funny and makes going to class interesting. He taught me how to think like an economist and now I look at everything with an economic eye. You won't be sorry if you take Econ with Joel
Class is optional, which I like. He is funny and awkward. I personally thought this class was a joke. If you have taken the finance 3440, you will do fine.
Cool teacher- gives lots of EC- real life examples- few tests- willing to help- funny
Potter is awesome. He makes the class fun and is very smart. He is always prepared and gives LOTS of room for extra credit. Only 3-4 tests and he gives huge study guides b4 then puts alot of those questions on the test! Good class, no b.s. just right to the point
Great teacher. He was able to keep the class fun and keep most of the class engaged. Lots of extra credit was given and the book was online. Great class!
Excellent knowledge of his subject and very clear in his teaching. Many examples used in class that help on test. Tests can be difficult if you don't prepare. Many of the reviews mention the extra credit; however, there was NO extra credit offered in this class. Possibly one of most interesting economic classes/professors offered on campus.
One of the best professors I've ever had. I had hime for 2 semesters and it was a great experience throughout. He keeps class interesting and is really funny. If you have trouble understanding anything, he is ALWAYS willing to help and helps explain anything you need help with until you fully understand it. I always recommend him to other students
This teacher is great. His class was fun and not to difficult. He likes to give extra credit. He is funny. I would diffinitely suggest taking his class.
A younger professor, but the best I've had so far after two and a half years of college. He makes things interesting, which considering he teaches economics is hard. I defiantly would recommend getting him or wait a semester if you can't. He is real fun.
Dr. Potter is awesome! Class is so fun; he plays YouTube videos and uses really funny examples that are often also used on the tests and are easy to remember. You do have to study still, but he made it easier and more enjoyable than other professors I have heard of. He is SO funny! We only had 3 tests then Aplia assignments online.
This class is super easy. Potter is pretty funny, and you don't really need to do well on the tests to get a good grade. He gives a lot of extra credit. Just do the aplia homework if he gives it. He plays a lot of youtube videos and jokes around and stuff. Really easy class
Dr. Potter is one of my favorite professors. He is very funny, easy to talk to & relate to, and he makes class fun and interesting while learning. LOVE HIM! Would recommend to anyone! Homework is 40% of your grade & test are 60%. Both are easy to do well on if you pay attention in class & do the aplia assignments. TAKE HIM!
Easy, but in order to do well you have to attend class. I learned most of the information from the video and from just common knowledge, but in class he helped understand it. The examples he gives in class are on tests and practice quizzes are on the tests.
Dr. Potter is cool, and very funny, and quite possibly the most unique professor I've ever had and not at all what I would expect for a microeconomics teacher. Do your aplia assignments and listen in class and you'll do fine. I would definitely take him again.
Micro econ with Dr.Potter is a good class, he knows what he's talking about. A good portion of it is online, surprisingly, but if you remember to take care of all that you should do fine. He's also a really weird guy, funny, but definitely odd and sometimes that gets in the way of class. He looks like Thom Yorke from Radiohead.
Dr. Potter is a really smart and funny guy, but I do not think he prepares his students well for tests at all. The online aplia assignments are 40% of your grade, and they can be very hard. Also, his tests are alot harder than what we are taught. He is an awesome person but I thought his class was difficult.
Very nice and even nicer to look it. I wish he would teach more than Econ so I can take them. He should take over for melton ASAP. Loved this class and it was very helpful taking it with him the second time around. LOVE HIS HAIR ^_^
Dr. Potter will crack you up! He makes class hilarious and pretty interesting. His class is not too difficult, but does require review and study outside of class. Really cool guy.
Good professor, but it's hard to follow his lectures. Material is tough, but there is enough extra credit to get a solid grade if you actually try.
Strange/interesting guy, but not a good teacher. He isn't very clear on anything and most of us thought he was a little lost in space half the time. All of these things made a supposedly easy course into a harder one. He will also randomly cancel his 8am class and send an email around 1am that morning to let you know...that can be frustrating!
Professor Potter is a wonderful teacher - everything he taught I understood and could process clearly. However his exams tested on an entirely different level than one in which we were taught. It was very frustrating because I felt comfortable with the content. But he will make the class lectures fun and easy to follow.
He's really funny and makes class interesting, but the material on the tests is not at all what we went over in class. Class is not mandatory, but I suggest you go so you have a slight idea what may be on the test.
He's a nice guy, and he can be funny. But sometimes he jokes around too much, and it turns into a wasted class. I only had to skim through the book and I got an A on every test. The tests are all multiple choice and pretty easy. If you really want to learn Econ, don't take him. If you're looking for an easy class, I highly recommend him!
Potter is the best teacher you could have. Think of all the movies with motivational and inspirational teachers that teach you about life and how whatever you are learning in the class can be applied with life, yeah that is Potter. He cares. Give him feedback. He honestly does everything in his power to help his students. Awesome hair as well.
Dr. Potter is an interesting fellow and his classes are often entertaining. My tip: make sure you read your book and memorize the graphs! They will help you on all of the assignments. Really study the vocabulary and make sure to do all of the assignments on Aplia to get maximum credit.
Dr. Potter is definitely interesting and hilarious! However, if you do not take his class seriously (like me), then you will struggle. The material itself is pretty hard, so make sure to read the chapters. I had to fight for a B and the only reason I had a chance at getting a B was because of the online assignments.
He is OKAY. Everyone seems to love him but to me he was just average. No need to go to class he is all over the place and you will never be able to keep up with the graphs he draws. His class is definitely manageable just make sure to do all online assignment because they are a main part of your grade. Test are tough.
He is an interesting person. Potsy is a funny guy but he isnt very clear on the material. He jumps around from topic to topic and will randomly stop lecture to talk about baseball or something. If you use the book as a guide and complete the quizzes online, you should be well prepared. If you put in some sort of effort, you can get an A.
Dr. Potter is a very interesting professor. His lectures seem very scatter brained and unorganized, but when it comes to test and quizzes, you find out he taught you everything you needed to know. I have not had such a cool professor before Dr. Potter.
Potter is an interesting professor and there isn't anyone like him. You will most likely enjoy his class, he does a decent job of making the material interesting. Assigns homework online via Aplia, so textbook is mandatory. Do not fall behind on homework. I missed one online assignment and it made the difference between an A and a B.
Dr. Potter is hilarious (sometimes too explicit). He loves what he teaches and is always enthusiastic. No technology (computers, iPads, cell phones), if he catches you on your cell phone, he will kick you out of class. His tests are difficult. Homework is assigned weekly through Aplia and there's an online quiz for each chapter.
Professor Potter was awesome. He keeps the lectures lively and only tells you the information you need. There are homework assignments and quizzes due every week, took me an hour and a half max! If you do well on the assignments, quizzes especially, you are sure to make a great grade in the class even if you don't do so well on the exams.
He's a space cadet. He gets off topic all the time. Sit in the front row and take notes. Do the reading. Do the Aplia assignments -- yes, it's part of your grade. You have to put in a little work. I hardly went to class & slacked on the Aplia. I made a C. He isn't a bad teacher. He isn't the best teacher; he's more of a minimum-effort proctor.
Potter is a great lecturer. Kept the class interesting and always cracked jokes. Homework assignment on Aplia is a must, some of chapter home works are lengthy and tedious but you do learn from them. 3 exams (1 is online), plus a final exam. First two exams are easy but the last two are tough. 2 cheat sheets allowed in final exam. Learnt a lot.

For a core class, he doesn't give any extra credit, bonus points, curves, or rounding up of final grades. His tests aren't too bad, but if you make low on one test, you will not get an A in the class. He is funny though.
I hate using aplia, but Potter is good professor. Do the homework and practices and you'll be fine. He'll answer anything in class. He's funny but can go off on tangents which is annoying. Overall not a bad professor for Econ.
By far the weirdest professor I've ever had, however, he makes class interesting and funny. I skipped way too many times (probs why I made a C), but he was an overall good professor and explained things in a simpler concept.
Potter is the man! Great lectures that always tie into the use of drugs but hey... Im not complaining. Man knows what he's talking about
Potter is a cool professor. However, I hate economics and find it to be a total bore. He mostly teaches through graphs so I would recommend reading the book. Also do the homework and quizzes and it will save you even if you don't do a stellar job on tests.
Potter is a funny guy, but his tests are much harder than the material on the homework and quizzes. There aren't many grades, so it's important to do well on them.
He's not your traditional professor, but he makes it interesting and you will (not) LOVE all of the graphs- seriously though you should buy graph paper.... He uses relevant examples and is happy to try explaining things in another way. His tests are tough but you just have to study AND NEVER LEAVE BEFORE FINISHING THE PRACTICE(test) QUESTIONS
His lectures are entertaining because he makes dumb jokes and just waits for people to laugh so its funny. He doesnt take attendance, but he writes main points from every chapter on a ppt that you just copy down. Tells you everything you need to know. After every class he gives option practice tests; very helpful. He gives online homework&quizzes
Dr. Potter is by far one of the worst professors I have taken at UNG. The material taught in class in mainly just a drawn out graph with little to no explanation. His tests are extremely hard, with very little information from the lecture on the exam. If you do take this class, make sure you read the book rather than listening to this professor.
Do not let this professors average rating fool you. This professor is awful. He has definitely ramped up the difficulty of this class. Lectures are a waste of time because he doesnt actually give useful information. Tests are set up to make you fail but intricate wording and long paragraphs. This class was more of a headache than it shouldve been
Potter is not a very good professor in the aspect that he does not really teach the material. His class consists of him copying the material directly from the book onto powerpoints, and then drawing graphs on the board. Everything you will learn, will be from your own readings. Also, he will not round up grades so be prepared for that.
If you have a chance to take another professor, then do it. Run far away from this guy
Stay far far away from Potter. Horrible professor who doesn't explain anything thoroughly.
Extremely boring class taught by someone who probably smokes crack before giving lectures. Textbook is super expensive. Stay away from his class at all costs
Professor Potter is funny, but that is about it. His tests are pretty tough, other than the first one. I recommend you look at AC/DC economics on YouTube for the material he will teach (its way more clear). NO TECHNOLOGY or you will be kicked out of class. You have to do the HW or you will probably get a C.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken in college. I have never worked so hard for a C in my life. I would go to his office hours at least once a week. This still did not help because his tests are extremely hard for no reason. He loves trick questions. He gives extra credit on test 2 and 3 but its only 4 points each.
Dr. Potter is very funny and caring. However, this is the most difficult class I have taken in college so far. The class is graded by 4 tests, one being a partially cumulative partially new material final. The tests are HARD but he does normally give a few points extra credit if you attend an additional lecture and do a discussion.
Great Professor, class can be quite entertaining at times. However, his tests are extremely difficult!!
Tests are not easy by any means. Class is very lecture heavy and is where literally everything is taught if you don't show up you will fail. There is no homework, but many online quizzes. NO PHONES policy. I like Potter a lot, super funny dude, always keeps lectures light and moving, well spoken, and easy to understand.
Potter is such a guy. He's a super cool hippie and his voice sounds like a baby, which for some reason makes him super funny. His teaching style was nice because he draws graphs, explains, and gives some outside work, but overall everything is really balanced. I would love to take his class again, and he's one of my favorite professors ever.
Fairly difficult course, half because its microeconomics and half because of how he teaches. COVID made it especially difficult to learn as he couldn't connect with us over video. Exams are extremely full of material, but he did add extra credit for almost each exam and the final. Nice guy, but not the best professor.
Dr. Potter is a funny and knowledgeable professor. He was very receptive to student insights and discussion. The material was very easy to understand because he explains it clearly. Attendance is not required, but you would be robbing yourself of excellent lectures. I achieved over 100% with minimal effort. I would gladly sit in this class for fun.
I was put into Potters class after my in person class was cancelled. I did not have any other options, so I have been stuck. I have a college GPA of 3.7, but am struggling to pass this class. There is NO teaching. He does record in person lectures which have so much background noise you cant hear. Other than that, be prepared to teach yourself.
Microeconomic taught by Potter is by FAR the most difficult class I have taken. He loves trick questions and that is what his 4 tests are mostly made up of. His lectures are pointless as nothing is throughly explained, I did not learn anything. Your final grade is made up of 4 tests and a couple discussion posts. If you value your GPA, do NOT take.
Do not take this class. Lectures are long and boring and you will grasp very little from them. Tests are very confusing, but make up the majority of your grade. Attendance is not mandatory and there's no real point in going to class because you will not learn much. He's a nice guy but this class is awful
He has a lot of powerpoints and draws his own graphs. It was difficult for me to grasp what he was teaching though. There was "Packback" where he had his own grading calculation for your final grade in that. Wasn't clear on what was required of that either but the tests were hard and didn't seem to match the lectures well.
One of the best professors I've had. He is very funny and also explains things well in lectures. There were also games/activities throughout the semester in class and sometimes extra credit.
Great and funny guy. Tests can be a little tough but 15 percent of the grade is participation. Show up to class and pay attention and you will do fine.
Great Professor! He puts in a lot of work to give students the opportunity to get good grades. pretty much every test had an assignment for extra credit. He wrote the book he teaches out of, and he is good at actually teaching. Enjoyed his class and would like to have him as a professor.
This is a very difficult class. He wrote the textbook he teaches from and he doesn't explain topics in much detail because he goes over them very fast. The test are also very difficult.
I took this course online and it was heavily test based. The textbook used is one he wrote himself and there are PowerPoints for the chapters and that is pretty much the study material. 4 tests and a midterm and final. He gives extra credit for each test, but a lot of the questions given are trick questions. Only take him if you absolutely have to.
This guy gave me the heebie-jeebies. His lectures were very hard to follow. There was a distinct lack of clarity and coherence in his teaching style. He will kick students out for using their phones. No laptops allowed, either. Do not take this class. Find any other option.
This professor was great. He taught the material as best as he could and always tried to give extra credit in many ways. However, his test are beyond hard if you don't put in the work. Lastly, he will kick you out of class if you get on your phone, sleep, eat, and talk to peers. He also grades attendance, so be ready for that.
Stupidly lecture heavy and incredibly hard to follow. Do yourself a favor and don't take him.
the tests are so hard but lectures prepare you well. DO NOT BE ON YOUR PHONE, BE SLEEPING, OR EATING! he will kick you out. you can miss 5 days and still get a 100 for attendance. he uses acadly for attendance
Mr Potter was a great professor. He was not very harsh of a grader. Being that this was an online summer class you have to be on top of your schedule. In the summer there are units on knewton alta, a discussion, a quiz every week, two assignments throughout the course, and two exams. I would recommend anyone to take him!
Lectures take some getting used to, he's soft-spoken but a really funny guy. Textbook is his own and will cost a bit but not bad and very concise, never beats around the bush in that or lectures. Written questions are in the book though and he will have you do these every class. Phones/laptops not allowed but not as big of a deal as I thought.
He's great! Super funny guy and extremely understanding. The class was hard for me, but this subject is not my strong suit. He gives great feedback, uses his own textbook however I can see why (it's super understandable read and goes over every page in class). He'll help you with anything, lots of extra credit opportunities.
Worst teacher I have ever had
He is kind of arrogant, and only teaches based off of a textbook he made. There is a test every other week for the most part, and they're very difficult. Almost every question has multiple correct answers, but if every single one is not selected, it's wrong. If it weren't for extra credit, I would have failed the course despite constantly studying.
The class is lecture heavy, but he makes it entertaining and answers questions well. The class is based on his textbook so you don't have to buy it. There are chapter quizzes, 5 or 6 tests, a midterm and a final. Tests are difficult but he curves every one significantly. Grades on attendance, but he allows you 5 unexcused absences for a 100%.
This has to be one of the best professors that I've had. I took him as a first-semester freshman and never minded attending his class. Attendance is very important. It's a lot of information, but he makes it manageable. NO PHONES OR LAPTOPS IN CLASS. He will kick you out if he sees a phone, but honestly, it's for the best. Would def have him again.
Not helpful with guidance for studying material. NEVER get behind in this class, it will severely damage your grade. Does offer extra credit for big tests and some smaller ones. VERY quiz heavy. Quiz on every chapter. Study 3+ days before exams.
Don't waste money printing out the textbook. Class had 12 chapter quizzes (lowest 2 dropped & open-note) & 6 tests (2 being midterm/final all lockdown/webcam). Gives extra credit points on each test which helps tremendously! Has homework practice problems that are optional & help with quizzes/exams. A good professor that I would take again! STUDY!!
The textbook is his own, you have to print it and bring it to class every time. Every quiz, test, and exam is multi-select heavy, so you'd better know your material because it doesn't give partial credit. His lectures are posted in D2L and are the same as in the textbook. He gives lots and lots of extra credit and grade curves.
Weekly quizzes and assignments. Lockdown midterm but non proctored final. Posts review questions for final and midterm that are basically the test. Super easy class over the summer.
Great professor. the content is a little hard, but if you read the sections (1-2 pages long) and attend class, you should be fine. the SI session really helped me as well. I would get C-B's when I didnt go, and A's when I went, so i just went to all the session after it. he offers a lot of extra credit for the midterm. 1 cheat sheet for the final.
I loved this prof when I had him fresh year. He will kick you out if you're on your phone or sleeping though so just don't do that. He makes you print out the textbook and answer questions at the end of each class, but he gives answers and its low stress. STUDY for the exams and you will be okay! He plays music and hes a unique guy, overall loved!
Very nice and funny professor. The lectures were sometimes boring because you are told to read everything from the textbook beforehand so you learn next to nothing in them. Other than that the course was pretty fun and informative. Requires paying around $3 for an attendance app and printing the entire textbook.
