Finally this man is on rate my professors! Sick ass class would recommend to anyone!
I took this professor over the summer. Summer was already short enough and he assigned way too much reading. Hours every day. He then assigned an unclear essay comparing plato's views on democracy. His final I had ten short answers and an essay which took over 5 hours and i still didnt finish. DONT TAKE POWEL!
I took Mr. P's PLSC 1 in Summer 08. One of the funnest, informative & inspiring instructors & courses I've ever had! Lot's of reading & ton's of opportunity to speak openly & opinionatedly(which is prob. why I did so well;-) Challenging tests-straight frm book-so read! Group proj final can be as zanny, comical & creative as you dare(for high grade)
I took the midterm the final and participated in a group project and i got a B, super easy. buy his reader for the textbook and you can use it on his tests, so you dont really need to pay attention. But if you do his class discussions are usually pretty good
He's extremely helpful, really nice, laid back, Theres alot of reading but if you just take notes during class the exams will be no problem. I highly recommend him.
Powell is extremely laid back, but serious about his work. I would consider him to be young, so he is still able to connect with the class as young adults while still garnering respect as a teacher. I took him over the summer and he would assign a chapter a day and occasionally would assign homework. Fun teacher, but not hard, but not an easy A.
ook him for polsci 1. hes awesome. laid back, understanding, and easy to learn from. the analogies he used made the topics easy to understand. theres a lot to read but he explains exactly what you need to know for any tests/assignments. i have a 1 year old and a job and was still able to complete the work and work for another class. TAKE HIM!!
This professor is really good. I'm not that interested in politics but he made the subject really interesting and I actually liked coming to class. Do the reading and participate in class - take notes and buy the reader cause you can use it on the exams. He has really good discussions in class and he's kinda hot when he shaves!
Dr. Powell is so awesome. It's pretty easy to relate to him since he's one of the younger professors. He Definitely knows what he's talking about and some of the examples that he uses in class to tie into lectures are hilarious and help you understand the subject matter.
Dr. Powell is real chill. He's younger and really is passionate about politics. Some of his test questions are tricky but it you get the reader you should be ok. Participate in class a lot, sometimes he goes off topic but his stories and illustrations are interesting. He's helpful but it's not an easy A.
He gives everything you would need to know in the powerpoints, but you could be gone for weeks and just show for test review to get good grades. The projects are a must too, but he grades pretty easy. Participate in class and you will get a lot out of this class.
Powell is a great guy, as long as you keep the communication lines open, he will work with your through just about anything. He doesn't keep roll, he only has one homework assignment the whole semester and one group assignment. He does say that the test are easy if you participate in class discussion, but that's not really true.
Dr. Powell is a good teacher, it's not mandatory to come to class cause he only takes roll sometimes, but if you want a good grade you should try to make it all the time. The discussions are really interesting especially if you participate. Buy the reader to use on the exams, he's really helpful and he kinda looks like Taye Diggs.
I loved the class as it was very informative and fun. Prior to taking this course, I had no interest in politics but since this class I am interested and will continue to read and learn more.
GREAT TEACHER NOT HARD JUST HAVE TO DO SOME READING. PRINT OUT NOTES TO FOLLOW AND MAKE ADDITIONAL COMMENTS. FUN, LAID BACK CLASS EASY A IF YOU DO THE WORK REQUIRED.
This professor gives way too much reading to do, his tests are hard and take too much time to complete. Worked really hard in the class and only got a "C".
Professor Powell is sick!!! Would recommend this teacher to anyone. Great class, professor is easy to understand and tries to help you succeed. Buy the reader to use on exams and keep up with the reading. Definitely not an easy A, but not super hard if you try. Take him!!!
Prof Powell ia a great teacher! He tells you what's on the tests, has great current day discussions and helps you to see why people should be engaged in their government. Buy his reader- its the single most important thing you can do, trust me
He was the best, I had no intrest in this class before taking it. In the second week I couldn't wait to go back. If you take this class and not take Powell your crazy!
This teacher is awesome! He LOVES discussions and opinions, and playing Devil's Advocate just to make you think. Everything he brings up is relevant and shows why it is important that you be involved - and if not involved, at least be knowledgeable. It doesn't hurt that he's pretty attractive, either. :P Also, BUY THE READER!
I took this class over the summer, and it was a great experience learning from Mr. Powell. There is a lot of reading involved, and the tests can be slightly difficult. Make sure you buy the reader, as it will help you do well on your exams. Discussions are always interesting, and the class never gets boring!
Dr. Powell is amazing teacher, he keeps you interested in the class, is very engaging and is so down to earth. He really keeps ontop of what is currently going on in the world and makes you want to do the same. I reccomend this teacher! It also doesn't hurt that he is a Hottie!
I love professor powell. He made political science fun and the class was great. We had a lot of class discussions and arguments but overall good class. The only thing I didnt like is the long questions on his text that really nothing to do what we went over in class/in the textbook. You must study if you want a great grade!
Such a rad teacher. Getting up at 8 wasn't great but he makes the subjects intersting. He moves quickly through the slides and doesn't have a lot of classwork or homework so you have to get good grades on those to get a good class grade. Definitely recommend his class.
Dr. Powell is one of the best instructors at Solano. LOVED this class! He always made class interesting & relevant, & he's open to both liberal or conservative perspectives instead of shoving his own beliefs down your throat. Buy the reader, not a lot of homework, gotta study for the exams they're exercises in reading comprehension & kinda hard.
Had great debates in his class. huge group project choose good ppl. buy his reader and write the slides as well as his class scenarios on it, for tests. one bad thing, he has been to law school, so his tests are 50% on laws and such, which isn't related to poly sci at all and the tests are extremely hard with the legal jargon. no homework
Always willing to answer questions no matter how repetitive they may be!
This class is great. It is somewhat challenging, but nothing I couldn't handle. This class was the best semester
Professor Powell is great! Makes class interesting, (I don't fall asleep like in other classes) His lectures go quickly, but he has slides online. Tests are challenging, so study and read them carefully they can be tricky. Overall great class, he's one of the best teachers.
He rarely uses the book, moves too quickly, his slides are online and that's helpful. His tests are concept based and confusing even with the reader. I study my ass off and still don't do that well because he doesn't explain things well enough for the tests.
I wasn't interested in Political Science one bit before taking his class. Participation is a must, very little homework but you must study for the exams and read the questions thoroughly. There's a group project at the end of course so make sure you pick the right teammates. His very helpfully when you ask for help. Great teacher Overall
Powell is one of the best professors at Solano. His class was so much fun and he knows how to relate the material and get you involved. Participation is key. Get his reader (book), you can use it on his tests which are really confusing and hard. Participation and final essay are major points. Little Homework. He is the man to take. Powell rocks!!!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He has a law degree and is extremely knowledgable on the topic. He encourages class discussion and makes the class content relatable to all ages. He allows you to use his reader on tests, and you can write anything you want in the reader! Participation is 15% of your class grade, so show up and answer ?s!!
One of the best professors at Solano. Charismatic, knowledgeable, kind, and a great sense of humor. Uses slides but elaborates (textbook isn't really used) and posts them online. Participation is key (%5 less than both midterms combined). Participation = attendance. Exams were hard but not impossible. Learned a lot. A fantastic class and professor.
The class is boring and very hard at first but after awhile it gets very interesting and easier. He is a very good teacher and helped me view political science In a whole new light. If you're thinking about taking poli sci TAKE HIM! two midterms one group project, twitter for participation if not talkative in class
not an easy A but he is a great teacher. his tests are pretty hard though so you have to make sure you are on top of things. if you actually put in the effort you can really enjoy his class, he is young so he makes it interesting. but like i said dont go in thinking this will be an easy A
Very nice man always willing to help. His tests are extremely hard even when they are take home. He went to Law School so tests are riddled with law stuff. There is a group project that is a big % of your grade, make sure you pick the right partners. I worked my ass off and got a B in the class.
good teacher and really knows what hes talking about. doesnt push his beliefs on anyone and will not grade you on your beliefs. class discussions were fun.
Love this teacher VERY INTERESTING. Just buy the reader he wrote & study the power points. His tests are based on them & there hard & there's only 3. He gives one multiple choice, take home, and my final was take home too! I got an average of a C on my tests but i did great on my group project & ended up with a B in the class. Do the extra credit!
Best class OMG!! This instructor is super good. He knows a lot of stuff and teaches it really well, makes it clear to understand and uses funny examples too. Tests are hard, based on concepts but if you study and really learn the material you'll be fine. Really an interesting class! He's hot too!
BEST INSTRUCTOR EVER! Loved this class with Prof. Powell. If you're taking PolySci TAKE HIM. Makes it interesting, uses relevant examples, super helpful. He's challenging, so you definitely earn it, but such a great teacher! TAKE HIM!
Hands down the best history professor at Solano. I never would havve thought I would be interested in law and history. Very helpful, interesting class discussions, and the coolest professor ever.
Seriously the most AMAZING professor at Solano. I was extremely nervous first coming into the class but Prof. Powell made the course EXCITING, INTERESTING, AND RELATABLE. Who knew Politics could be so much fun? I recommend this class to EVERYONE-no matter what your major is. Challenging class but Prof. Powell is incredibly helpful! Take him!
Great class. Professor Powell made topics that may seem dull and dry very interesting and fun. I learned something new each lecture. If you need to take a political science course, you'd be crazy not to take it with Powell!!
Professor Powell was awesome! I really enjoyed his class, even though I hate politics. Touches on some very difficult subjects but he is a great mediator. Think of this class like a debate class. Attendance and participation is huge!
Professor Powell is an awesome professor! The material can be very conceptual, but he finds a way to make it memorable. Make sure to go to class because he does cover all of the material in the exams in his lectures, which are complemented by the book. His study guides are super helpful. Highly recommended!
Tests were very hard. The material on the tests had nothing to do with the material on the study guide.
Professor Powell is a great professor! The material can be very conceptual but he uses memorable examples that can be applied. You will learn so much from this class, take him!
Professor Powell's class is the best I've taken at Solano. It's not an easy "A", but he makes class interesting and now it's like I actually like coming to class. The study guides help, but get the book because you can use it on tests. Participate and review his slides because it gies fast in class sometimes.
He's a super laid-back, HILARIOUS professor with a large amount of information for someone his age. However, his lectures go by super fast (though he does post slides online) and his testshomeworkextra credit make your brain want to implode. But honestly, his class is worth all of that for what you learn: the real truth about politics and law.
He is an amazing teacher! Funny, nice and really goes into detail about the material. He enjoys hearing many different pinions.
Amazing professor. Total of 3 tests in his class which were tough, but he has one day a week before class dedicated to answer questions & you can get extra credit points if you attend. I attended them after the first test and my grade in the class skyrockted. He is very funny and i think EVERYONE enjoys him. Can use 1 of the books on tests w notes
Powell is a fun teacher. His powerpoints were funny and it was easy to participate -just give your opinion and you get participation points! That saved my grade. I only did fair on the tests and still passed with a B.
My friends told me to take Dr. Powell's class... they were right, he's an awesome instructor. Not really into politics but his lectures are interesting and he really makes himself available when you need extra help. Starts off difficult but the material gets easier as the semester goes on. Would love to take more classes with him.
Really fun chill class. There's a group project which is a significant part of your grade, make sure you get a good group. Lectures are pretty cool and opens up to the class for discussion often, not a whole lot of outside work. Tests can be a little challenging, just make sure you study. Certainly recommend.
His lectures are interesting and the time goes by quickly because you get so immersed. I tend to hate anything history or government related, but I actually didn't mind attending his class and I ended up enjoying it. He's very interactive with the students, but doesn't force people to answer. He responds to emailstweets quickly and is approachable
Hands down the best professor at Solano Community College. I'm a poli sci major but I would recommend his class to anyone. Very insightful, entertaining, and funny. He's open minded and wants to hear everyone's opinions and never gives out his own so that students can think freely. Only gives out two or three tests through out the semester too.
Literally the best class ever, super chill but you learn a lot.
Great teacher. Very funny and makes the three hour class much more interesting. I love the class and plan to take another one from him.
Dr. Powell is very approachable and cares about his students progress.
He's extremely passionate about this subject and presents it in a way that is engaging and interesting. He assigns a lot of homework, but if you do it, you'll be set for the test. I learned so much in this class. Although it was tough, I loved it and would take it again. Beware of take home exams. They are not as fun or easy as they sound.
I attend a 4-year university and took this class for the summer, it was honestly better than any class I've taken at my university. Dr. Powell is such a great instructor. Love his lectures and how he explains stuff makes total sense. Great class, even better teacher. Wish he was teaching at my school! Take Powell if you want to learn something!
His lectures are entertaining and he's great at explaining the material. There was only one assignment, two midterms and a final. The final and one midterm were take home tests with all the answers in his powerpoints that he posts online for you to use. He always responded to my emails in a timely manner and is really supportive to his students.
Dr. Powell is very entertaining! I love how he interacts with his class. Tests are hard and confusing but he's leinient. The subject of law is confusing anyway. As long as you do all the work and show up you will pass.
Dr. Powell is a great professor. His lectures are very engaging and he goes out of his way to help students. He breaks stuff down so you can understand it, but the tests are still pretty tricky. If you read, participate and go talk to him when you don't understand stuff you'll do well.
Dr. Powell is hilarious and makes political science fun and easy to learn. He allows notes on the tests and his lectures are always so entertaining. Participation is important but with how comfortable the class is, it shouldn't be a problem. He even has a twitter account for more ways to participate if you're shy. Offers extra credit and is helpful
GREAT TEACHER! I don't know why a 4year hasn't snagged him by now. He knows his stuff! He's well learned and traveled so his lectures reflect that. He is also hilarious. Whether you take his 50min or 105min class, it'll feel short because he's such a great teacher. Take his class, you won't regret it!
Professor Powell is one of the best teachers!! Solano is very lucky to have him, he is a passionate educator and as a student its very refreshing to see that. I took his class and he inspired me to pursue my goals even more. Everyone should take his classes, If you have the opportunity PLEASE TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSES!!! You won't regret it!!!
Dr. Joel Powell is a great professor. He is well versed and he knows the subject very well. He is very good in articulating the subject material. Well mannered and respected by students. A great asset to Solano College. I hope UC does not snatch him from Solano.
What I learned is that YOU HAVE TO PARTICIPATE. It's 15% of your grade!!! His tests are pretty challenging (as in you have to actually critically think--even though it may be multiple choice). His lectures were never boring I must say, and there's a group project due at the end of the semester and it's a nice way of making new friends. Great prof!
Dr. Joel Powell is a great professor. He gives very good lectures, allows class participation to help each other understand the subject material better. A great asset to Solano College. I definitely recommend him for any Political Science class that he is teaching.
Professor Powell is probably one of the funniest yet best teachers I've ever had. Participation is important to him but he makes interacting and participating fun. He tries hard to relate issues to current events which keeps it entertaining. Take home midterm and final!
Dr. Powell is an easy-going guy who knows how to deliver insightful information about the crazy world of politics. The class on its own is interesting, but Dr. Powell takes the class to the next level by really engaging the students to form logical arguments and opinions. His tests are not a walk through the park and group project is required.
Seriously amazing professor. There were a few assignments, some tests, and a group project. But nothing was that hard. Participation is a biggie, but he makes it easy to speak your opinions. Lectures are really interesting.
I LOVED prof Powell! He made learning about the political system of this country really fun. Depending on your class, be ready for heated discussions. I really appreciated the fact that he was very open to opinions and people's experiences and he didn't have an obvious bias. He's a really freaking cool guy and Solano is so lucky to have him.
You won't be bored. He's very enthusiastic of what he teach and makes it enjoyable and fun for his students. He's very helpful and approachable. Midterms and Finals can be tough if you don't study before the exams. He gives extra credit, so take it! Take his class and you won't regret it. He's a really cool professor!
I have always hated politics but Joel is a wonderful teacher who is truly passionate about teaching and has done a wonderful job of providing political information from both sides. I still don't actually know where he stands on the political spectrumbecause he just presented facts and opinions from both sides. Best teacher I've had at Solano by far
One of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures are long, but make it easy for you to understand the concepts he talks about. He gives homework but nothing too hard and he also gives extra credit. Participation matters!
PLSC016 Summer Session. Great instructor! It was intense! Lots of coursework in short amount of time. Lectures interesting. fun & engaging. Participation is a big plus! Specific w/his class requirements. No book needed in Summer. He put all reading materials on Canvas. Loves his students! Would highly recommend taking any of his classes!
I've taken quite a few of Powell's classes and he is an amazing professor. You have to be prepared to do the readings and the assignments to keep up though. Participation is a must but he keeps the class interesting! He is very funny and always happy to better explain something.
Awesome Prof! But be ready to participate in his class. He's funny and makes the class interesting. Wish I could take him again. Really helpful guy.
Dr. Powell is the man. He has helped me through a lot of my endeavors in life. Without Dr. Powell I'd be screwed. I recommend Dr. Powell to everybody because he's an amazing person. Always keeping the class interesting. He has a great CCPLS program for people who want to become lawyers.
Dr. Powell is an amazing professor. He genuinely cares about all of his students and is easy to reach outside of class. He makes his lectures fun to go to. He also makes sure that everybody is on the same page. The book was required but we were able to use it on quizzes, midterms and the final
Powell is awesome! As a political science major, his stances on subjects are as classy as they come. There is no obvious bias included in his lectures, he simply puts the information in front of you and leaves you room to formulate your own ideas. You HAVE to speak! Get involved in discussions and pay attention, it makes the tests easy!
dr powell is awesome, very relatable to all and is an overall cool guy. would take him again. The book is expensive but you can sell it back. It's not a conventional textbook and he wrote part of it. group presentation, research paper, two midterms, a couple of quizzes, a final, and all the extra review lectures are extra credit and they help you
His book is poorly done and you NEED it, get a used one with writing in it. His MC tests ask Qs that apply knowledge, not ask objective Qs. Ergo, the answering part is more subjective than objective; I hated them. Lectures are more so class discussions. Poor standards for the group project. Doesn't remind you of due homework till 9PM night before.
Enjoyed the class, it's not easy though. Dr. Powell wants his students to learn so you won't just be able to memorize info but you'll have to be able to apply it on his tests. He's really easy going and wants to help. Group project is ok, just find good group members and pick a topic you're interested in. Would definitely take him again!
That rating a couple posts down is a hater and completely inaccurate! Dr. Powell is one of the best instructors I've ever had. His tests are difficult cause... uh it's College and he wants people to learn. If you get a chance you MUST take his class!
Without a doubt, hands down the BEST professor I've ever had! Dr. Powell is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter, and he makes complex ideas much easier to understand and he's very engaging. Do the reading it helps on the quizzes and find good group members for the research project. Definitely will take another class with him!
Joel Powell is one of the best Professors I've ever had! He's very engaging and has a leader's voice. He presents just the facts and allows the students to form their own opinions regarding politics. Presents both sides well. I really enjoyed taking this class. Take him you won't regret it.:)
Powel is the best professor I have EVER had. I've taken multiple classes with him and love him even more after each. He has a fetish for group projects though but I've had positive experiences with mine. His classes are not easy but they are not impossible either. Taking his class was one of the best decisions in my college career! :)
Joel Powell is the best! This class is super interesting and relatable to life. I highly recommend professor Powell. His teaching really stands out in an excellent way . :)
Mr. Powell is the best teacher EVER!! Political science can easily be politically skewed, and students can be forced to regurgitate the teacher's belief. NOT IN THIS CLASS. Mr. Powell plays both sides without revealing his own beliefs. He facilitates student debate and discussions during lectures. ABSOLUTELY recommend Mr. Powell!
He is very passionate about his class but its unfair that the students grade comes mainly from participating. I did all my assignments and did very well on the midterms and final and I ended up with a C in the class because I barely participated and other students who talked and didn't do assignments got A's. And his exams are ridiculously hard
Dr. Powell is a great professors one of the best I have had, and has a wonderful attitudes and creates an amazing class atmosphere, no matter if you like politics or not.
I've had Professor Powell for two classes and so far, he's the best professor I've ever had. He makes his lectures interesting, engages the students frequently, and makes sure to tie in every subject to current events. The classes are pretty easy too, so just try to keep up on the reading and participate during class.
Dr. Powell is by far one of the best professors at Solano CC. He makes the subject matter relatable and interesting. He always has the most interesting anecdotes and allows ample time for class participation. Be prepared to participate in the class discussions, and plan on a lot of reading. PLSC 001 is one of the best courses I've taken thus far.
By far one of the best classes I have ever taken! Dr. Powell makes lectures interesting and involves the class. He is great at playing the devils advocate at all sides w/o saying his opinion. Tests are pretty hard so make sure to study. He is a fair grader and participation matters! Talk at least once a class and you should be okay.
Interactive class. You will never be bored. He makes political science fun and easier to understand
Great professor with amazing lectures! He definitely makes class enjoyable if you put in the effort you will pass with A!
The way that professor Powell speaks on topics makes the class super interesting and understandable. There were a fair amount of assignments and online quizzes. He is very organized. I really enjoyed this class and this professors way of teaching!
Hands down, Dr. Powell is the best professor I have had the honor of having while in college. His class is relatively easy, and he makes political science come alive with great detail and humor! 11/10 would retake this class or any class he teaches. Values student input, and very personable. Integrates E.C and quizzes and tests are manageable!!
Loved his POLI SCI course last year and I wish he would return to Solano!! He made learning fun about not so fun topics. Such a great professor. Always looked forward to my 8am class with him, my favorite class so far at solano.
I just saw Prof. Powell's name on the schedule again this semester!!! WOW can't believe he's back at Solano. Powell is the best professor I've ever had hands down! Challengeing class, but super interesting, learned so much, and he really cares about his students. TAKE POWELL!!! I wish I could take him again, he needs to teach more classes!
I really loved this professor. Great lectures and he KNOWS what he is talking about and is very informative with his lectures. Tests and quizzes are easy. He is also really funny and is very open about certain topics. I highly recommend.
Dr. Powell is an amazing Professor. Hes extremely knowledgeable, but more than that, he truly cares about whether students understand and succeed in his classes. This is a rare but extremely important quality for a college professor. Quizzes are straightforward, tests are pretty challenging. Not easy, but I loved this class. Take Him!
I loved Professor Powell's lectures! He's a smart guy, and he kept class interesting and fun. However, i hated his exams! I found them very difficult and the way they were worded was confusing to me.
Awesome Professor, loved this class. Tests really make you think about concepts discussed in class. Overall great class, would love to take more classes with him.
Not really into Poli Sci, but needed this course for my major. I was expecting this course to be boring and lecture heavy and to my surprise he was a very energetic and engaging professor. He does drop a few F bombs during lectures, but its college, not high school. Read your books and you'll do fine. Overall great professor and fun class!
BEST CLASS EVER! Love Dr. Powell, awesome instructor, really knows what he is talking about. He made a 3 hour class fly by, I was actually upset that we didnt have more time. Take the class you definitely wont regret it!
Dr. Powell's approach to teaching government makes it easier for everyone to understand. Even if you don't like government, he'll still make it interesting. Something to expect in his class is discussion, these discussions are fun and inclusive. If you take his class, don't neglect the online assignments because they are important.
Dr. Powell is the most amazing instructor I've had at college. He is always willing to help you understand the content. The class is not easy, and the tests are challenging, but even if I failed this class I'd still say he was awesome! Really cares about students and encourages us to become active politically. Made me want to change my major!
Amazing professor. Provides great lectures and actually cares about his students.
Professor Powell is a very thorough and funny professor. He takes a subject that sounds dull and makes it quite interesting and thought provoking. His tests can be difficult to understand but if you do the reading and ask questions whenever you dont understand something you will be okay. He is always there to help and he is lenient. Highly suggest
Funny, bright, and makes learning fun. Helps you out all the time, and yes you need to pay attention & GO TO CLASS. Everything will make sense if you attend! The big Bill Project start early! He takes it seriously and takes you as a student seriously. The tests are HARD, and so are the quizzes, do the extra credit! He is in love with participation.
The exams in this class are ridiculously hard. The average for our midterm was 71, and Prof Powell said that it was a great score for the first exam. If a low C is a great score, maybe there's something off with your tests. Prof is passionate about polisci and seems really cool, but his tests are frustrating and convoluted. It was all semantics.
Love Professor Powell, super knowledgeable and really wants to see everyone do well. Exams are challenging, cause well this is college... Love that he respects you as a student, and really interesting and relevant topics. Not a big fan of learning this subject online, wish there was more Zoom lectures. Awesome teacher, great class, take Powell!
As wonderful and charismatic as Prof. Powell is, this class was ridiculously difficult. Even with hours of studying, I failed every exam. The exams always consisted of trick questions and weren't things that you'd easily know from having read the book. You had to buy the textbook from campus, and it wasn't cheap. Over $200 to struggle for months.
This was my third time taking PoliSci and I am so glad I took it with Professor Powell. Most of the class was discussions on modern topics and opinions. Great feedback. He is not a tough grader at all. The only thing I would say is the tests and quizzes are difficult, but not impossible if you understand the material. No ridiculous assignments due.
Amazing Professor, amazing class especially for a pandemic! I loved the short video lectures and hes really good at getting back to you when you dont understand something. Youre gonna have to read. The tests are challenging cause he wants you to learn and pay attention to details. Gives extra credit! Powell is the best PS instructor, take him!
Professor Powell is my favorite teacher Ive ever had. I took his class 8 years ago and hes been on my mind so often lately I decided to look him up. He has a lot of knowledge to share. And a lot of real-life experience to teach. I enjoyed his class very much.
His tests and exams are not as difficult as everyone is making it seem. It's manageable as long as you read the book and use common sense. Reading can be a lot if you procrastinate. His small lecture videos are fun to watch. Participation is a must! I hope zoom was mandatory since he seems like a very fun teacher.
Professor Powell has great lessons, very smart and knows what he is talking about. Heavy grader. Study if you want to pass the tests/exams, they were the most difficult part. Book use is helpful for discussions and assignments, compared to other sources.
One of my favorite professors ever. I found his class interesting, and honestly his tests weren't hard. I'm a procrastinator, but studying was easy for me. Do the study guides!!! The questions are often about applying info from the lectures and the study guide which is frustrating but very doable.
Prof. Powell is an incredible teacher. Funny, engaging, and he makes poly sci interesting. The discussions are relevant to today's news and as long as you put in effort and support your opinion, its an easy A. The tests can be fairly difficult, but the study guides are definitely worth doing.
I loved Dr. Powell's class! I took it online for Summer 2021 and he was so interesting that I wish I had taken a lecture class with him for an entire semester. If I were you, I wouldn't be scared about the exams like people say. Just read the book (he wrote it after all) and really aim to understand the concepts instead of just repeating facts.
The textbook for the class is the worst. But thats the only drawback I have. Overall the class was good. If you pay attention to what is going on in US politics you should pass easily. Just study for the test and take advantage of all the extra credit.
Great class, Amazing Instructor! I could stop there, but honestly, best class and best professor ever. He even held optional zoom meetings to help you prep for the exams. The textbook needs a better index, but I like the way it was written and information is good. Tests are challenging, but read, and ask questions. EC was awesome! Take Powell
Professor Powell is a really good teacher, but there is one assignment in particular that makes the class exponentially harder. I was completely lost on the Legal Research Project and it was worth a whopping 200 points. A lot of his assignments don't offer much instruction, but he makes up for it with explanations after the fact.
While Professor Powell is a great lecturer (I have taken him in-person before), he isn't that great online. First issue of the semester: he took over TWO weeks to reply to student emails. Second issue: he uploaded case files in a weird format so we couldn't access it, yet we weren't given an extension. Lastly, he takes long to grade assignments.
I wish this class was in person, but overall I really liked it. Really appreciated that he was willing to be available for questions on zoom, no matter how big or small. He knows a lot, and how to explain it well, so that was good. I feel like the project was difficult. I'm signed up for his class in Spring already though! He's really good.
Best professor EVER! COVID has made taking classes online terrible, but his class was hella cool! Loved the videos, & the fact that he had reviews on zoom. Hated the tests, they make you think, LOL! I'm used to matching terms & fill in the blanks. Questions come from slides & book. Otherwise, REALLY loved this class. Taking him again!
Professor Powell honestly made the class so entertaining by discussing modern topics and connecting them with the material. Easy class just do the work, I didn't use the textbook as much but it does help with details, extra credit opportunities were offered and they were short videos and 5 question quiz. The tests are tough but manageable.
Professor Powell has been awesome. He gives very clear feedback on all discussion posts and the discussions can be controversial but they are always very interesting. My fear coming into a political science class would be that the professor would be prejudiced against beliefs that arent his own but Professor Powell was incredibly fair and open.
He is okay. It was nice that he gave extra credit. The assignments for discussions and CAD questions were straight forward. The quizzes were okay. However, the test were a bit difficult. He never responded to my emails on canvas. He also took months to grade assignments.
Professor Powell's online video's were entertaining, but his test were horrible. A handful of words were spelt wrong and the tests would be full of trick questions. Even if you knew the material, you would hardly be able to tell the right answer, because their were multiple or the right answer was misspelt, etc. Everything else was okay tests suck.
Love Professor Powell! Poly Sci Minute videos are amazing, makes the material easier to understand. Tests are challenging but not impossible, you just have to read carefully. Kinda slow to grade stuff, but if you email him about it, he's good about getting them updated pretty quickly. Accessible outside of class, and he's hella cool too.
This is a class U could easily get a B in but will need to put that extra work in to get an A. Discussion topics r interesting, writing assignments are pretty straight forward, etc. His test will challenge you, I excelled on almost every assignment but the tests were sum else lol. DO ALL THE ETRA CREDIT HE OFFERS!!! IT WILL HELP YOU AT THE END.
The textbook he requires us to read is very difficult to understand, so only take this course if you like decoding philosophical ideas. Quizzes and tests are super challenging, and require lots of studying, but helped me become a better student. I watched YouTube videos to help myself understand the concepts more. No rubrics are provided (?).
Dr. Powell is a great professor; he's passionate about political science. He wrote the entire textbook for the class so it's required to read it, or you will struggle on his semester exams. His poly-sci minute videos are entertaining to watch so you should take advantage of them & his lecture review videos are amazing, he explains the material well
A great professor!! Discussions are every week and are detailed. Quizzes are a bit hard, but you can use notes, lectures, and the textbook provided via pdf. Overall, you would like this professor, he is very lenient with his students.
I wish Professor Powell taught in-person, he is very enthusiastic with his work. His textbook is required for assignments and he always offers extra credit which will help your grade in the end. Exams were the only thing I found most difficult. Get ready for discussion posts and quizzes. All in all it is easy to manage this class!
Typical for PoliSci classes, there was so much reading and papers, which I liked. What I despised was the locking and unlocking of our modules each week. He would open the module too late on multiple occasions but have the same due date. It's an online class where students want to work ahead. It was so tiring. Still got a good grade though.
He's chill. Posts his own youtube videos for extra credit. Took this class in the summer but the workload was really manageable. Promotes discussion about current events but doesn't require it. Multiple choice midterm and final.
I had PLSC 001 over the summer. 2-4 assignments per week, but you can't work ahead. The extra credit is his entertaining PolySci Minute videos. He wrote the textbook and it's self-published. This class has writing assignments, discussions, quizzes, and ridiculously difficult exams. He's slow with grading. Overall, I liked this course.
Prof Powell's online PLSC001 kept me engaged with entertaining video lectures and relevant discussions. Tests were tough but manageable with the textbook and Unstuck AI resources. Put in the work and you'll do well in this class.
I didn't think I would like political philosophy but Powell made it really easy to understand. He uses references from movies and pop culture and ties it into the material. Lots of reading, but that's to be expected for a philosophy class. I wish they had this in person would make discussions better to have live conversations on this stuff.
Read the assignments, read the textbook, read a summary of the readings until you fully grasp every key point of the assignment. Expect to read about 5 pages a week, plus a 200+ word report or discussion. READ WHATEVER COMMENT HE GIVES U FOR FUTURE SCALE OF GRADING. Other than that, perfect class. Very interesting. wish it was in person.
Tough grader. He doesn't respond to emails or messages, I had to message him twice to respond not once but twice. He says he's lenient with late work but he is not. Grades very tough.
Excellent professor, amazing class. Lots of reading, but it's a philosophy class so, I mean kinda have to expect that. Lol He drops your lowest discussion, quiz and assignment grades. If you don't understand he's good about helping if you reach out to him. Take Powell, he's really great and very knowledgeable!
He wasn't a bad professor per se, he was just a tough grader who didn't give good, if any, feedback, making it difficult to improve. He was also tough to reach through email, but hey, at least the textbook was free!
Really good class overall. He's a good professor, smart guy. Doesn't give a lot of feedback unless you ask for more, just meet him in zoom office hours, it helps a lot. Lots of reading but that's philosophy lol. Assignments are pretty interesting though and he does a good job of relating old Greek philosophy to modern politics.
Why doesn't he teach at the main campus anymore?? I've taken a few classes with him, he's one of the best professor's I've ever had, but he doesn't teach at the main campus and I don't like driving out to vacaville all the time. Bring this man back to the main campus, he's the BEST!!
This class wasn't too bad, just a lot of reading and writing. Most work consisted of short weekly essays and discussion prompts which were tedious. Nearing the end of the semester, you will write up an essay project and complete a final exam. Overall, class wasn't too bad but if you're someone who doesn't enjoy writing, this may not be for you.
Interesting class. Lectures were unclear, consisted of slideshows and long readings. Readings come from free online textbook. Gives extra credit if you follow him on twitter/X. Several essays. Seems like his class would be way better in person.
Loved this class!!! Powell is amazing. He is like one of the last instructors who actually wants you to learn something and not just use the class for a GE. Listens to all perspectives and doesn't take sides, helps you understand different perspectives. Take him, he's realy good.
Pros: Great professor, really knowledgeable, cares about students and wants to see you succeed. Course information is relevant to what's going on now, interesting assignments and discussions. You won't be bored. Cons: Dude takes a long time to grade stuff, lots of reading for this class (it is philosophy though), no rubrics for some assignments
It was okay, I wouldn't take him again. Had to pay for a book HE wrote for some assignments (summer classes)
For a summer class this was pretty good. Four discussions, like 2 or 3 written assignments, weekly quizzes and a couple tests. It was manageable and didn't interfere with my vacation plans. Videos were top level and lecture information was pretty relevant. Overall, solid class. Missed an "A" by a few points, should have done the EC.
He's very enthusiastic and fun to listen to. The major downside is he requires a textbook that he wrote. I recommend sharing it with someone because the only use to me is the homework. His exams are difficult but he drops lowest scores so it balanced out for me. Overall a very informative class that gave very useful and valuable information.
I got a C in this class and I think he's a tough grader, but also, I probably could have done the reading. Either way, I actually did like this class. His lectures keep me interested. Tests are tough, like you will need a dictionary sometimes. But he does gave lots of extra credit, and drops a bunch of assignments.
