Picks favourites... Marks you accordingly on midterms and final. Material on tests is predictable - the marking scheme isn't. Good luck - I'd look into York Continuing Ed.
Absolutely horrible! Get a new job.
not helpful
Considers "D" a passing mark. More interested in failing students than teaching them.
Joel is a tough cookie, but realisticly represents the complexities of accounting. Pay attention, study hard, do the readings... the usual stuff required to de well in ANY acc course. He is still one of the best acc profs. Advanced Acc is not a hard course, but LOTS of assignment essays. The book is an MBA course-book, so don't read it all.
This guy is Satan in the flesh. He ****s all the time. He loves to fail people. his exams are designed to fail students, and not to measure their ability. WATCH OUT!!!!!!
Everybody in the class failed their midterm this year!!!
This was Joel's first-time teaching 'Accounting for managers', and like ACC504, it should belong in an MBA syllabus. Too much similarity between the 504 tests. If you're aiming for the UFE its a good course, its all case studies. The course should really be entitled: Applied ACC414. (STUDY 414 beforehand!) Joel is still a tough marker.
very smart man. test was reasonable. exam was hard. he talks really loud its deafening. has his favourites usually nerds with no life and sucks up to him. am sure glad am done with his class, towards the end i couldnt stand him as a person or a prof. dont take it with him unless u have to.
He is a good talker. Always talk about his previous marriage. Very hard marker in the tests and final exam. He will say some thing but he will do some thing else. Esther is really hard but if you show your work she will give you some part marks. Shapiro mark the paper depend on his interest of the person. His class is waste of the $ & time.
His class isn't boring, but does not help you to be prepared for tests. So study the textbook very thoroughly. His tests are reasonable, not easy, but not too hard
The course is pretty interesting. The problem is he expects too much for a first case course. Marks pretty strictly at times.
He is one of the worst professor I ever met. He prejudice people just based on appearance. He once mentioned that he gave up career in math and chose accounting. For him it is not a matter whether you pass or not or you get adequate marks for your professional exams. His answer is 'I don't care'.Try to avoid this fellow unless you are supperb
You see him you RUN!!!!! Expect a grade Drop!!!!!
Avoid his classes at all costs. Makes you feel like you're still in High School. Yells frequently and unnecessarily and depends too heavily on the answers from the Instructor's Manual to explain anything...hence nothing is explained to students, he just copies it from manual onto the board. Tests are ridiculously hard.
I thought he was great. You will excel in this class if you have a general knowledge of accounting you should be ok. What many people complain about is he also expects a certain level of writing. Many students (not native to english or not well read) will have trouble studying for this. Go read some books guys because the real world expects it.

I think he prejudice people.I don't think he is a fair marker. You may wonder whether I have the ability to criticize him.I tell you one fact, I merely passed eventhough I had a good preparation. Here is a sample of his comment ' If Leafs won't make to playoff I will grade ur papers...". He is a kind of moody professor.
A really nice prof, who tries to make acct interesting and funny. He does expect a lot - make sure what you write makes sense in the real world. Also expects the writing itself to be good - but that is what will be expected in the real world, so if you want to take something out of this course take it with him. He is really nice if u get to know hi
Whatever you see on here is totally true about him. I would say he does not have any respect for students, talks nonsense, and says one thing but does the opposite. Totally unpredictable expectations. In simple words, he is "SICK".
You would never know what the f... he wants from students. You will fail his f...ing class not knowing what you did wrong. Just run away and take this class with some other teacher. This is an easy class but he makes it hard and talks non-sense in every class. AVOID at all COSTS. This is coming from a student with 3.8 GPA. and is not just a joke.
GREAT PROF,makes accounting fun, bear through the cheesy jokes, its what keeps you awake in class,he is completely fair in his marking, just make sure what you write is not BS and you wont have a problem,he expects you to write with good gramar, especially relevant stuff to the case,do not put every possibilty, listen to his instructions & ull do good
Prof DOES address topics in class that are tested later. HIS focus should be YOUR focus too. My only complaint is that he posted a Grade Indicator doc online that explains: "To get an "A" you must use examples." Yet, on the midterm he scolded everyone for using examples because we weren't asked for one! His Speech about how to get an "A" is useless
Overall, not a bad prof. his jokes are not funny sometimes, but he gets your attention somehow. Make sure you write simple and clear. no BS lines. His expectation makes the course easier than any other prof's
Honestly, he IS the worse prof out there. I have had Esther Deutch for both acc414 and acc514...in both I got an A-, from him, i got a D-. He is so narrow minded, & won't consider conflicting arguments you can FIND in the CICA handbook. He really needs to open his eyes, and step away from his precious solution manual!-he would be lost without it!!
He gives marks as he is giving $$ from his checking account. BBBBBBBBBBBSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
I did both 504&507 and the prof is ok. Go to Class, very low failure rate. You got to know your stuff and you have to read cases and reccommend a solution. Requires work but nothing impossible. Me personally would take another class with him. Not the greates prof but on of the good ones. Not THE BEST !!!!!
Not the greatest but far from the worst. Tough marker but make your answers TO THE POINT! It's quite possible to get an A on an assignment by having half a page typed double spaced! Infact he probably milks marks for those who makes his life easier and writes as little as possible while getting to the point.
worst prof in the world, contradicts himself all the time, makes answer seem "easy" and that everyone who got it wrong is a stupid, but in reality answers are subjective, if he didnt have the answer guide he'd crash and burn, he doesnt know his hand from his foot, should NOT be teaching anymore.
he is alright...but a tough marker. he expects u know everything inside out. grammar is the key. even if u dont exactly get to the point ,he'll still give u marks for having a good grammar. He is also a very moody prof. Jokes and laughs when he is happy. Rude or screaming if he is not.having fun class or not that week would really depend on his moo
he expects less for this class compared to acc514 and 504. easier to get a B, he goes a little easier on marking hte midterms but assingments are still little unbias
The worst prof i have ever had. You basically dont know what he expects from you. Avoid him @ any cost!!!!
This course shouldn't be too difficult, but Shapiro makes it hard. He never told us exactly what he wants so we have to assume and our assumptions are usually wrong. He is very pissy about spelling. I lost 10 % on a midterm because I had spelling mistakes. I wouldn't recommend him but compared to the other ACC504 prof he's the best of the worst.
A great prof. Supportive, friendly & a good presenter. (he should try stand up comedy). He makes accounting class interesting. He is a bit of a tough marker but it's not to be evil like other profs, it's to teach us to get to the point and write professionally. He's a good guy and is always willing to help a student out.
I consider him to be the worst prof to date. Didn't talk about what we did wrong on the mid-term but yammers on and on about spelling. Maybe he should move to the school of journalism or social studies?
good prof, funny; knows his stuff, just go to class, ask questions, he responds fast to email and is very helpful. gives staright forward answers. very fair tests and assignments...
I'd rather be taught by a moping broom than by him. He does NOT know how to teach. He leads you on to think one think and then you are surprised with something completely different on the exam. Avoid him if you can, and I pray for you if you can't. He is nice and helpful, but this does not make him a good teacher
Very knowledgeable, keeps class interesting with real life experience. Your mark is determined on how well you know ACC 414/514 & your ability to think "outside the box" when writing cases. Do not try & B.S. the cases you will get a really bad mark. You will do well on midterm/final if you did well on assignments, group case & presentation.
This guy will make your semester very miserable. He is very subjective, when he marks the average is a C but when his TA marks the average is a B if not higher. He can be funny too, but most of the time he is just mad and rude. We were all scared to ask him questions..Avoid if possible trust me!
He is a tough marker, but extremely helpful in teaching his students about cases. Go to class, he isn't so bad to talk to like other students state. He must have marked the final exam hard because my grade dropped two grades down :|Come to class with a helmet on bcuz you may think you have done a good job, only to have a horrible mark on the tests.
If you want a good mark in this course, do the unassigned cases in the textbook. For the midterm & final, the cases were straight from the book. But he doesnt tell you this and together they are worth 75% of your final grade. DO THE EXTRA CASES and you will be fine! His jokes are hilarious. CA=Cant add
If you want a good mark in this course, do the unassigned cases in the textbook. For the midterm & final, the cases were straight from the book. But he doesnt tell you this and together they are worth 75% of your final grade. DO THE EXTRA CASES and you will be fine!
The only way to pass this course is if you study the cases on your own. The proff is very subjective and a hard marker. Midterm average was 55%. Overall you don't know what to study for and no solutions are provided so you must attend classes to understand. Shapiro is just a hard marker, he enjoys giving out C's.
Completely unstable, unpredicatable person. Grading is extremely subjective and inconsistent...students handing in the exact same work receiving a 20% variance in the grade...do NOT take a course with him if you need an A...A students like myself generally end up with a B with Shapiro because you just don't know what to expect!
Deducts marks for grammar like "RU is suck". The course requires a solid grasp of accounting principles. I recommend taking this course after completing 514, 521, and 522. If you can tie in comprehensive accounting concepts, you'll do well. He's unpredictable but not as bad as he's made out to be.
I were scare to take him class because I heard he deducts marks for grammar and spelling mistakes, but the end up I enjoyed his class (ACC 504) very much. He taught me how to write straight forward answers to get the point and write professionally for the cases. Also, no one is like him that made boring accounting class interesting. He should do co
Continued: He should do comedy for living too. I feel more confident to do financial cases now and my English also gets improved a lot especially spelling. I will take ACC 507 with him definitely in this fall because I get an English teacher too.
Very good professor, lectures are clear and interesting. And yes, you should laugh when he tells jokes ;p. Recommended
Joel Shapiro is a bully. He intimidates his students and warns that he will retaliate against attempts to appeal his self-admitted subjectivity. He does not issue course evaluation surveys. I had a 4.0 average going into this course and I'll be happy to get a C. He expects competency equal to a veteran CA without explaining how to get it.
He talks about a software that he created in his past where people copied it. His anger and frustration about his fast comes into play when he teaches this courses. If he could put his past aside and focus on the course, he would make a good teacher. His mindset is already pre-determined. He is very very subjective.
Come on...retire already! There are many better profs out there that wants to replace you. Stop teaching and go manage your bridge club business.
My advice to you - STAY AWAY!
Subjective; has favorites; tells jokes and talks a lot about his past; knows his stuff though not so much IFRS; best mark possible in his class is b+..
The course it self doesn't make sense. You just write cases, are you KIDDING? On top of that this prof doesn't care whatever you have learned so far in ACCOUNTING. You have to follow SHAPIRO'S method to get a B and be his class fav to achieve a better grade. So good luck.........
This is a case course just like ACC 504. You'll do well if you can articulate your thoughts properly into words and tie into your assignments other knowledge from other courses. At least this course has a textbook but the material isn't all that useful. He's a nice guy, get to know him. Took 504 & 507 & can't complain about my grade got a solid B+.
Very subjective marker. If you're a girl you are fine. If you go to his office hours and he knows you personally you are fine. However, for the majority of us, we are just screwed. Avoid him if you are not a girl and if you rarely if ever visit profs in their office hours. What a terrible prof.
Like what the other posters all have said, a very subjective harsh markers that doesn't like to give anything above a B. That is unless your a girl with 2 big 'pineapples' and visit him during office hours. Your not likely to do well in his class otherwise. Arguing with him doesnt change your grade. Be happy with a final grade of C.
I guess you can't avoid him so the whole school suffers. Being a girl didn't help either. Use the class to study for some other course.
Would give him 0 if there was an option for it!
The prof is a very hard marker and HATES when students write small. His lectures are somewhat entertaining but it is important to read and attempt the cases before he takes them up in class. Be clear and to the point in assignments and exams. He rarely gives out a grade higher than B+.
At least his lame jokes keep the class a bit light. The class itself is not bad but Shapiro has his own way of doing things. Do not stray from his methods. You will not learn anything new in this class, only apply things you have already learned. Get on his good side and watch your spelling!!
His quiz was haard. Mostly lectures and 30 minutes to do 20 questions.
First half of the quiz was ridiculously hard, material was never covered in lectures, all answers somewhat right. Second half was easy. (I think it was hard due to him teaching what, like 3rd/4th years for the past 10 years....) This is coming from a student who had over 90 in gr 12acc and is acing all his other classes...
Even though he is a hard marker, and his jokes suck, he is helpful as he actually told us what the answers are to every case on exams (in general), but maybe this only applies to first year.
Extremely tough marker, very little flexibility. Unless you are gifted in accounting I do not recommend this professor at all.
This prof is okay, but not the best. Make sure you laugh at his jokes all the time. Don't feel bad if you do poorly on the midterms and finals becuase everyone does. I would say he is a tough marker as well.
Overall course has little work/studying. However grades are completely random. Spent a large amount of time/effort to an assignment, received a C. Finished a similar assignment in 1hr, got a C. He hands out a lot of B's/C's. No matter how hard/how little you work in this course, you are going to get a B/C. Be happy with it, you're not going to fail
Not a very good professor, extremely rude to the class on the a whole. Marks extremely hard. He isn't useless as a teacher as long as you do not ask any questions! He is exceptionally unfair and I would suggest trying to find another prof.
Stay away. Everyone who did well only did so because they had friends who had taken the course before and had his solutions.... He doesnt even follow proper accounting, he follows his version of it, which is totally arbitrary.
The course is hard. And it should be. the point is to give GOOD advice to a client, not say whatever comes to your mind and happens to be consistent with GAAP. Despite what people say, his answers don't look a thing like the solutions manual. He's very logical and students have to be also. People just complain because they get poor marks.
In class he's kind of a mean.. but during office hours he is approachable.. he'll assist you if you seek out for it
He's not as hard as everyone on here says he is
I wouldnt recommend taking him. He can be a character which keeps class interesting but that's not going to help your GPA. Also the way he marks is kind of arbitrary and he also deducts marks for wrong answers.
He is okay. You really need to do exactly what he says. He only gives you marks if you write the cases the exact way that he wants them.
Joel is tough yes but he makes you really think. I learned how to look at a company and assess how transparent the transactions are. Things aren't always what they seem. He may be rude sometimes but I can safely say I have never fallen asleep in his class. The midterms and final aren't hard he just wants a specific way of writing reports.
Haters gonna hate. The man will make you think, and brings an added dimension to accounting. Regardless of the grade you receive, you will come out a little bit wiser.
This guy is the worst prof I have ever had in my three years at university. He doesn't care about the students AT ALL. If you ask a question he will humiliate you in front of the entire class. Hes lazy, mean, and gets enjoyment out of making his students feel dumb.
I have passed the course but still I have no idea about what he really wants from students. In-class exams are from the text book and he is a HARD marker. His class is not boring at all but clarity is ZERO. I did not like his personality . the level of MT and final exam is not comparable to class discussions and exams are much much more harder.
His marking is very subjective. A friend and I were able to collaborate and handed in the same class assignment (with different wording ofcourse) only to receive drastically different marks. Knew he was bad before taking the class, but wow.
funny guy
Extremely hard professor. Marking scheme is totally unreasonable and is very subjective. Doesn't teach how he wants the case to be written and is rude to students who need assistance. Midterm was really tough. Take this class in the summer to do well and have more time to develop your case writing skills.
He's rude and inconsiderate. Always yelling, even when a normal indoor voice would suffice. He made me feel bad every single time I asked him for help, whether it was in office hours or during a break in class. The good news about this class is that, while very similarly taught, it's not nearly as difficult as ACC504. Passing ACC607 is no problem.
There is no denying that he is an incredibly hard marker. You must take ACC 504 before 607 (I learned this the hard way. He does not teach how to do cases in 607. He does this in 504). However, he does teach the course well. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE CASE, IDENTIFY USERS, OBJECTIVES, BIASES & CONSTRAINTS BEFORE WRITING IT! Do this and you will pass.
his marking scheme doesnt make any sense. His teaching is not clear. This course is hard & we are only stuck with him in fall&winter.
Brutal professor: obviously he knows his stuff, but he expects students to know accounting to the level he does - which, after only four accounting classes, we don't. Midterm and final cover topics not discussed in class (accounting for investments was on midterm but covered in class after midterm). C+ is the average mark in his class. GPA killer.
He is a really tough professor. If your answers to the cases in the assignments, midterm, and exam don't exactly match his, he will fail you. You'll be lucky to even pass this course on the first attempt. His midterm and exam were unreasonable. You must attend class to even have a fair chance at passing.
He is not a good professor . He is rude, demeaning, and inconsiderate towards his students. When students come to him with legitimate concerns or questions, he humiliates them in front of the class and calls them dumb just because students actually about their grade or their education in general. Your GPA will fall dramatically. Be careful...
Mid-term average was a 45%. Is the class really that tough, not at all but when you pick question what weren't discussed you can't expect a whole lot. He's somewhat funny but is pretty rude at times.
Mr. Shapiro is not a bad teacher. I rather liked him in spite of what other people have said here. I believe that you have to know how to take him. The course was not difficult but you have to study everything for examinations or you may suffer in the marks. I like the way he structured the class, especially the end-of-class assignments.
I digress. Smarter since taking his class (shamefully twice). You will not get an A unless you are exceptional. Not CPA, chill out guys, learn from this man, he knows his stuff.
Two common phrases you will hear from him (paraphrased): "Your mark is determined by how much effort you put into this course" and "You can't study for this course". His sample solutions to cases say something like "If you missed up to three of these points, you will never become a professional accountant". Switch schools to get this credit.
hard prof ,too much too early.
Horrible professor. He is rude and demeaning. He's always yelling (he seriously doesn't stop). He tries to trick his students. Horrible professor, probably ranks one of the worst IN THE WORLD... STAY AWAY!! Marks incredibly hard.
I urge all the interested 504 students to take this course with some other prof or elsewhere in a different university for the credit. Professor Shapiro knows his stuff but is a tough marker with tough exams. He demoralizes his students with an "i dont care" attitude and it is difficult to pass this course with him.
Joel Shapiro is a good professor in terms of teaching as he know his stuff. But when it comes to marking and testing students... oh boy does he trick students. Students should take this course with someone else OR take it somewhere else. For those who want to take it at Ryerson, study everything from 414/514 before writing the midterm.
He is very clear and precise. Made accounting 100 one of the classes that I did really well in.
Toughest grader with tough tests/exams. He has an answer key from which he marks the cases. If you deviate from his suggested solution, he will FAIL you and wont consider what you have written even if it makes sense. He's big on punctuation and grammar. Therefore, if English is your second language, then good luck. Definitely a NO.
Although his class was not the one that I most looked forward to every week and he was somewhat demeaning, I did learn a lot in his class. He knows his stuff and I found him to be a very good teacher. Although he could be somewhat rude I wouldn't switch out of his class if I had him for ACC406
He knows the material that he is teaching and uses real life examples during class. I learned a lot in his class.
Although he makes bad jokes, but he is a really good prof. If you ask good informed questions he will answer them clearly and give good examples. My biggest tip : go to his office hours because no one really does.
Not very nice to the students who have never taken accounting before. Smart guy, makes faint jokes all the time, and yells a lot. Although he is very clear with the material and teaches in a great way.
i dont know about ACC100, but took 504 with him and boy it was a nightmare. If you can be Shakespeare and write in good English; you shouldn't worry much. Moreover, there is a dire need to review 414 and 514 as it will help you alot. As far as the tests and his grading is concerned, he's very tough on that.
Doesn't give anything over a B. Go to class, he notices if you go to the washroom let alone if you miss a class. Tests aren't hard if you know everything from 514. There's no need to study because anything/everything could be on the quizzes/midterm. He just expects you to know/remember it all. The cases and classes help with studying for the final.
Before taking CACC504, thoroughly review CACC110, CACC 414, and CACC514. Though CACC514 is listed as a co-requisite, don't believe it. You will be tested on material from CACC514 before that material is even covered. As well, you will be tested on material that is not covered at Ryerson - financial ratios, comparative stmt. analysis, etc.
Be very careful when taking this professor. He deducts up to 10 marks for spelling mistakes (as if we are in an english class!). The professor is ruthless, uncaring and unapologetic. He DOES NOT give anything more than a B. If you can take this course at any other university I would strongly suggest that!! Ryerson needs to hire a new professor !
Great professor. Knows what he's talking about, explains really well. Beware when he goes off topic to make jokes. You won't be taught anything for the next half hour. Swap if you can't keep up, he never slows down. Tests aren't too bad, pretty clear. Be a model student or he will yell at you. It can be really irritating, even if it's to others.
He is a good professor, really cares about his students but if you dont show up to class you wont pass. Come to his classes he really cares
Great professor for ACC100. Maybe tough and scary at first, but if you stick through hes good. Go to class his explanations are great.
Average prof. He tries to tell corny jokes in class and although lame, they do lighten the mood. He teaches you his own tips and tricks for accounting that are easier than what is taught in the course and makes sure to explain concepts until every student understands. He always does a brief lesson on the chapter before the clicker quizzes. 8/10 :)
Shapiro's class was overall pretty easy, especially if you took accounting in high school. For those who have not taken accounting, I do recommend going to his class because they're VERY helpful. He really cares for his students when they have questions, he gives great examples, and the in class demo questions are very similar to midterm/exam q's.
Not a bad prof. You must go to class to do well. He's always yelling in class though which gets really annoying, really fast. But he's knowledgeable and helpful if you ask questions. He's not that tough of a marker, if he gives you a bad grade, you probably deserved it.
although going into his class, i was absolutely terrified due to the reviews of him here, it turns out SHapiro is actually a really fun guy, who teaches accounting through corny jokes, yet very very very clear concepts. he doesnt try to trick you on the exam whatsoever, come to his lectures and you will be set for the exam and get an A no problem!
Had this guy for Winter 2016, had grade 12 accounting experience, funny guy who knows the stuff required for this class, class was sometimes entertaining. People need to seriously do the aplia questions and do the review examples that he posts, they really help when exam time comes along, he does talk loud lol, also make funny corny jokes )
A warning to students with anxiety related issues: if you are incorrect he's not afraid to scream something like "WRONG" in your face. If you have a question, he will likely interrupt you so many times that you forget what it was. He also made a joke in class that managed to target queer indigenous people, in which the punchline was alcoholism. ugh
spends more time yelling at you that you're gonna fail the course than actually teaching the course.
great prof
Pretty good prof, told us exactly what we needed to know on the midterm and i ended up getting 85%, granted i took accounting in grade 11 so it was mainly review. Teaches pretty well by showing lots of examples in class, overall a good prof.
For my introduction to accounting, he made is very difficult for someone with no prior knowledge to understand any concept. He goes very fast and although always says to ask if you don't understand, explains extremley fast n if you don't get it the first time mocks you. he gets mad if you are late ,leave class early, on your phone, not participate.
Awesome prof! Shapiro knows his content very well and does not just feed students the textbook. He does a great job at explaining and addressing areas of difficulty. Most importantly, Shapiro has a great sense of humour which makes his 3-hour lectures enjoyable. Prepare for in-class quizzes, they are not worth a lot but can change your C+ to a B.
A good prof
The only thing he's good at is yelling that you're going to fail the class and attempting to make really bad jokes. Switch out if you can.
All it takes to pass the course is, practice the practice questions he gives in the textbook. The course materials where all helpful. He was a good and funny teacher but shouts unnecessarily at times.
Overall pretty good prof, makes a lot of stupid jokes in class. Does a lot of examples in class
the only thing he is good at is coughing
Very rude and disrespectful. Impossible to learn from.
Free textbook! As long as you do all the readings and some practice problems, you should be fine as they're similar on exams. He put a few questions not covered on the exam in error but later gave them to us as bonus marks. I really learned a lot following the online textbook.
Prof. Shapiro is very comedic inside the classroom environment, but he will comment if you show up late or leave early. He does yell at his students sometimes but there's never a dull moment in this class. The textbook is free, the quizzes count for 15% of your grade, and if you take the time to talk to him outside of class, he's a really kind guy.
Straight up rude, always goes on about how most people will probably fail the course instead of giving encouragement, tries to belittle students when he gets the chance
He was strict and inconsiderate.
Amazing prof, teaches VERY well and gives you the tools to do well in the course. He will prepare you for the tests and exams and you will do well if you practice and study on your own time. Course isnt easy but he makes it understandable Will definitely take another course with him
Funny dude, makes a lot of jokes in class, nonetheless he's a smart guy that knows his stuff, does a good job at explaining concepts and clearly tells you what will and won't be on the midterm/exam, he is a ruthless marker so be careful, one mistake and your entire answer will be wrong, classes are mandatory for marks, FREE TEXTBOOK
Horrible person and prof. Makes all lectures mandatory with clicker quizzes every lecture worth 10% of your grade. Ruthless marker that always goes on about how you're going to fail his class. There are a lot of practice questions in the textbook, and I recommend doing most of them to prepare for his exams. Avoid taking his class at all costs.
Professor Shapiro can be loud and sort of mean, but if you do your homework and show up to class (the minimum of what is expected of you) he won't be mean to you. The class is an easy A if you're able to put in the required work. You MUST do the practice questions and read the textbooks before class to understand what Shapiro is talking about.
easiest marker ever
Shapiro was a very knowledgable guy and definately knows his content. However, you must put in the work and do the practice questions before class as he only takes it up. He gives you some helpful tips to help u remember certain concepts. His explainations were great but his marking was horrible. Very tough marker and dont argue marks with him
Although this prof looks like pierce from community he is decent for ACC 100. He is the course coordinator and his test are pretty easy. You just have to know how to do the content if you do not practice or do the questions on your own you will fail
Joel was a very funny prof and made the information a lot simpler. 100% would take again
The man is a living legend.
Joel isn't awful, but for sure isn't the teaching style I prefer. He is tough, he is aggressive and yells at you and is FAR from encouraging for his students. Although, from a course standpoint- he teaches well, goes through lots of examples and gives you all the information you might need.
Not saying anything personal because I don't want to slander online. But I will say, if you see you're enrolled in his ACC100, drop it. The good reviews are so so so far from the truth.
I don't even know where to begin. Let's just say that.
I honestly enjoyed his class. Definitely need to come prepared and alert if you want to do well. A fair prof that knows his material well. Attend class and actively listen and take notes.
He sucks. Avoid at all costs. He will spend the first 20-30 mins lecturing your class about everything.
WORST PROF/COURSE COORDINATOR EVER! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Provided us with an online textbook free of charge. the weekly quizzes were easy marks and a review of what was taught in class. the midterm and final exam was all multiple choice. he makes jokes and tries to lighten up the mood in the class so that students dont hate coming to class. caring and honest with you telling you what needs to be done.
Stand up guy. While others may find him quite intimidating and over-the-top, Joel is a great professor. His lectures are clear and concise and his thorough explanation of the topics gets you engaged in the concepts and makes you want to learn more. His tests are not the easiest but if participating and attending lectures, success is easy.
Is really funny and lightens the mood
Having an 8AM accounting class was not something I looked forward to but Shapiro was a great prof. He teaches you only what you need to know, and summarizes information really well. Also takes up questions and does them step by step. He made accounting easy, it was an 8AM worth going to. He also makes hilariously bad jokes to wake you up.
He teaches well just come to class prepared
Always read ahead, even when you think you understand everything! Raise your hand in class and participate! Don't be shy to ask him questions. He's a laid back professor. Work hard, don't pray!!
His ACC100 class is the highest failed course at Ryerson, he makes sure to address this in the first week of class. He is a funny guy and will give you a laugh but his teaching skills are not the greatest. He does not provide feedback on work even if you ask for help numerous times. He is very strict. Don't email him unless you want a rude reply.
Although Prof. Shapiro only goes over the main points of the chapter & takes up questions in class, his explanations are easy to understand & remember. He may seem tough, but that's only if you don't put in the effort. If you read the chapters & do the homework before each lecture (as you are expected to), you'll do well.
Not a good prof. He loves to tell his students how disappointed he is in their grades, and focuses A LOT on how we will fail. I found multiple incorrect answers on his quizzes and when he told me I was right and he was going to correct this, he refused to change my mark. He expects his students to be doing 100+ pages of questions each week.
He yells a lot when asking simple questions. Its already difficult because everything is online however hes usually yelling at students which makes me not like the class. you could have the hardest class but if your professor is nice youll do good. He makes class hard and i get anxiety everything i go
he's very strict but a very good teacher. lots of hard concepts but he makes them clear
Always upset with teaching the material, but he is a good teacher when he doesn't get upset at the questions you ask. He's not too bad but I wouldn't take again.
He's a living legend and one of the funniest easygoing profs but at the same time he is very strict and his tests are murder
he loves to constantly remind his students that they aren't going to pass if they don't spend every waking moment studying for his class. if you have Shapiro you're basically teaching yourself. his midterm and exam were brutal about 90 questions each but the material isn't too hard. just try to take advantage of the weekly quizzes and super quizzes
He's a great guy, but is very strict and has a short temper when it comes to asking basic questions about the course or material you clearly should know. He tries to be funny at times which lightens the mood, and he always replies to his emails really fast and will answer your questions. The midterm and final were fair. DO THE HOMEWORK!!!!!!!
He's a good prof but he does not actually teach in his lectures. He just takes up practice questions from the textbook. He has a tendency to raise his voice when you ask a question if he's already answered it. On the upside, if you email him during the week during (9-7) with a question, he will get back to you within half an hour if not less.
Tough but fair. pretty good teacher that will take the time to help you out.
Make sure to do the questions he gives before class because if you dont you will have a hard time understanding the concepts
He's a pretty decent prof. During his lectures, he goes over key concepts that are important to the examinations and quizzes, but does not touch on the key terms, just practice questions. The textbook is free and mandatory to your understanding. He's a bit rude sometimes, but overall does a good job at helping students understand course content.
Wanted to take points instead of giving him even one. The course in general in not that hard but he makes it very tough to follow. Just has tests and weekly quiz (heavily weighted). Doesnt listen to any queries and is always telling us how grateful of him to let you do this and do that. I have seen some difficult profs but hes on another level
Joel is a great guy! It's not his fault that accounting is a dry course but he tries to make it a little better with his dad jokes. If you take then time to go to class and listen you won't fail.
I have no background in accounting so its not that easy for me, but even though I try my best... my grade acts like Im not. We had a low class average and he told ppl to drop. My friends did. Hes not the nicest prof, but he tries to make jokes (could be offensive). Idk, just be cautious.
I don't know why the mark for Professor Shapiro's is so low but he is definitely the funniest prof I have ever met in my life. Love all his jokes, provides lots of example for students during the class, and will have recorded office hour every week!
He's insufferable but at least his class is easy. The modules are EVERYTHING in this class. You can skip the useless "lectures", but don't fall behind in the readings, quizzes, and most importantly, the practice questions (because the exam questions are very similar to those). Watch out for important typos in his modules - there's a lot!
If you attend class and do the work with him you'll pass. This course is easy, midterm and exam are brutal though just because it covers so much content.
GOAT. Dont listen to the negative comments.. If you show up to class and do the bare minimum to practice this course is a breeze.
Terrible lectures, disorganized course content, and quite annoying to listen to. I'd recommend picking any other ACC100 prof over him.
He literally told me I can be reported for academic misconduct for asking for a mark adjustment on a question I got right but just didn't add a - symbol.... please avoid this man he's beyond rude and difficult
horrible.
I would try and pick another professor if I had to take another accounting course. He's pretty rude and yells at students in lectures when he's answering their questions.
I made it through by just reading the textbook, lectures are long and boring but okay if you have a specific question. Chapter videos are super helpful, but inconsistent.
My experience with Shapiro has been poor to say the least. He is rude when you ask for help and goes out of his way to make things harder for students (AI Tests). Test do not always follow textbook (accounts have different names than what you learned). Only thing helpful are the youtube videos that are inconsistent throughout the modules. Just Ew.
He makes everything harder for no reason: distorted files, no recordings, snarky responses, exams that don't have enough time, etc. Theres no professor to student connection to be had here. There is no respect or effort put forward to help students succeed. Shapiro is one of the most infamous professors for a reason. Take anyone else.
Super old fashioned guy, does everything with pen and paper. Doesn't use power point slides or excel sheets to explain concepts and expect you to create balance sheets, income statements, etc by hand since he doesn't know how to use excel. You will fail or get a terrible mark if you don't create excel sheets that calculate each transaction.
My time with Joel was the worst. He's old fashioned so be aware about that. If you ask a question, be ready to get yelled at. He is rude to students.
He was one of the rudest professors I have ever had. The first class, I asked one simple question, and he yelled at me, making me not want to ask any more questions ever again. He doesn't teach anything during the class, but goes through only 1 or 2 practice questions. If you want to do well, you must watch the YouTube videos he provides.
Joel is very old-fashioned. He will drive home what you need to know but with little sympathy for the learning students. He calls out students for asking questions, responds rudely when students answer incorrectly and then proceeds to complain about attendance. He does understand the concepts well, but his teaching style isn't it.
Find out how he wants to mark the exams. Must read the textbook. He speaks in a broader context, not to the point.
Solid guy, very straightforward. His class definitely sticks to the saying if youre not ahead, youre behind. Stay on track and his class will be manageable. Ask questions and hell be happy to help. He responds to help questions via email very promptly and is not as bad as some may say he is. GO TO LECTURE AND DO THE WORK! Youll be fine.
Unnecessarily rude for some reason? Whenever a student asks a question about the course he responds as if the question was a personal attack. Very intimidating to ask questions, and shows no sympathy for students.
This teacher makes me want to say the n word
The lectures are useful, however sometimes he gets mad when students ask questions which is annoying. A decent prof in terms of teaching.
Professor Shapiro is a very knowledgeable professor who is also quite funny. He is quite firm, no exceptions and not much sympathy for students. He provides plenty of opportunities for students to ask questions during office hours, but beware as he is a bit of a sassy man. Course is not hard just don't be too lazy.
Look acc 100 is a very heavy course , Shapiro although isn't the nicest professor he knows his stuff and teaches well
Joel is a sheep. He seems disrespectful to students when speaking to them. He left p** stains on his chair, all he did was sit in the classroom and stink it up.
This guy is brutal. He spends ~45 minutes per lecture complaining. His class is very disorganized and poorly designed. Textbook is provided but taught out of order. He has a very specific way he wants students to work and study, and complains when students work differently. The class itself is not hard, he just does a pretty bad job teaching it.
Not a terrible professor, but held back by poor attitude, impatience, and lack of ability to engage. Self-directed learners who can handle staying on task and keeping up with readings/practise questions, should do very well in the course. Lazier students will likely have a tough time getting decent grades or potentially even passing the course.
Joel is an old fashioned guy. He may be perceived as a tough professor but he knows his stuff and he wants his students to succeed. ACC100 is a heavy course so it is important to keep up with the homework.
I took the course through chang and had 0 interaction with the prof so I can't say anything about his personality. But I found his office hours and ICDQ recordings very helpful (the questions he goes through are similar to the ones on quizzes/tests) and managed an B+ in the course without doing any homework.
Done through Chang, so I had no interaction with the professor (optional office hrs). The course was all on me to learn and if you set aside proper time to practice you'll do well. Midterms/exams are mostly fill-in-the-blank numbers which were black and white for online tests as he can't see your work, just the answer. Provides "textbook".
Took it as an online summer course, so I didn't get to interact with the prof. The lectures are 100% self-taught. If you want to do decent you NEED to keep up with the weekly content. Content from each week connects to the following week. DO THE PRACTISE QUESTIONS - they are a great representation of tests and quizzes. Definitely a heavy course!!!!
p** prof
This prof is appallingly rude, inconsiderate, bullies students in class if they didn't do readings, it's disgusting. I'd be swearing at him if my review wouldn't be taken down and I'm not even one of the ones he picked on. It's gross to see a professor treat students the way he does, and the worst thing is how smug he acts. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Told us his D2L would remind us of all quizzes and exam times, this was a lie. I received no notification for ANY of the quizzes, including the super quiz. I have to get up at 6am to go to a different class, by the time I'm in ACC100 I feel completely comatose, so I forgot the part when he said it'd be online. 10% gone in the first few weeks. Lmao
He's a fair prof. If you attend his lectures, you'll get a better insight of the materials and he'll often give you examples of the questions that'll be on the exam/midterm. Don't really know why other students are giving him a harsh rating. If you put in some effort into this class and not mess around, you'll do just fine.
The lectures were a summary of the book material, though it is still recommended to read the book. The professor tells jokes to make the class more entertaining. If people leave the class during the lecture or don't pay attention, there is a high probability they will get called out by the professor. Tests and exams are fair if you practice.
Prof is diff from the other ones I have. So, I would say, if you can't handle sarcastic jokes and professors coming right up to your face and grill you with questions till you get the right answer. Then, I would suggest switching....Otherwise, he's not a bad prof. He's actually pretty helpful.
Very easy course and the professor is knowledgeable. However, he is old and tends to repeat general stuff a lot to the point that it becomes annoying.
Calls out students in class and makes them feel bad for leaving his class early. Frequently tells students they will fail if they don't use the methods that work for him. Stopped attending his lectures after the midterm and did MUCH better on the final when I studied on my own terms using methods that worked for me. Basically, Shapiro = self study.
Joel is a very old school professor and wants you to study his way ONLY. It's important to come to class having read the chapter beforehand. He is very knowledgeable, funny and made himself available if you needed assistance. However, the way he would yell and embarrass students in class in front of everyone was off putting.
will literally come up to u and yell at u if u didn't read the textbook.
he calls you out randomly to speak and like yells at everyone very very very bad do not recommend
HORRIBLE prof and human being. No words. Whatever you do avoid him or get ready to be picked on and yelled at. Worst prof ever.
If you get this prof, switch immediately. Thinks he's funny but he's not.
I swear, attending his lectures are more dangerous than my commute home. Homeboy YELLS at his students for not doing their readings. This man needs to chill. I have to sit in class PRAYING he doesn't approach me. (like y does he care so much this ain't high school bestie) He thinks he's funny but he's not. Also uses an overhead projector. bad prof.
Don't take this prof.
If you have questions or leave class early be prepared to get yelled at. Switch out!!!
The most suitable word to describe Joel Shapiro (Joely Poo) is Unhinged. He is undeniably a very interesting old man. His lectures are not mandatory but are beneficial as he will answer questions in class. He is extremely deaf and probably blind. He makes bad jokes but he tries. He uses a paper projector and is a TTC lover. Joel doesn't really care
Easy class as everything was online and open book. He is a very impatient prof and picks on you to answer questions as well as gets mad at you for going on your phone. If he tells you that the midterm, super quizzes, and exam are in person, don't waste your time studying and going to this class.
Shapiro was a very caring prof! He may use some outdated teaching styles, but genuinely cares about his students. He even has weekly zooms just for questions you might have. You definitely have to read the textbook and be prepared to be asked random questions in class (that aren't hard though). Overall super nice!!
He was okay, he will call on people and basically, just go over what you read prior. Since everything is online it makes it easier. He can get a bit annoying cuz he rambles but the course itself isn't to hard
I'm not sure why he has SO many bad reviews. Yes he can be kind of harsh, but I don't take it personally at all. His teaching style is a bit old school but I find him clear and easy to understand (especially for someone who doesn't know anything about accounting). I think he's pretty great overall so far
The course is unorganized and relies on a lot of tests/exams. The exams were lengthy and vague. The final was too much.
He is very rude and shouts at everyone in the class for anything a person(s) done wrong. If we either not attend class on time or if we do not do the practice questions, he will us that we will fail the course. Zero motivation or empathy towards any of the students. Do not take this professor for this course!
I had him last semester and I attended his class once. He is very rude, and he uses outdated teaching methods. His mid terms and finals were online for me, so I didn't attend any more of his lectures.
Do not take his class, very unprofessional, rude, yells at students, demeans students, gets mad over nothing, tells everyone if you don't do something his way you will fail. His favourite phrase is "I can tell who will not pass the course". Doesn't know how to use a projector or manners. Take this course online if possible.
bro is funny
Go to his lectures and prepare before his class, thats the only way to pass this course. The midterm and final are hard.
terrible
He honestly cares about his students and will straight forward tell you if his class is right for you. He is honest when he tells his students that if they do not put in the effort to study they will fail. Do not sit at at the front. He does provide the resources you need. Also, since he is old he can come off as rude but funny as well.
He is a very old-school prof. Reminds me of the old grandpa from the movie UP. Do not sit at the front he will pick on you. The midterm was very easy as it was online; open book. But final was brutal; in person closed book. You need to do the practice problems to understand the questions. You have to attend class to get answers to the homework.
This prof is quite rude and likes to belittle his students. In terms of teaching, he's okay at it but has little sympathy. He thinks flexing his fail and drop out rate is good and will not hesitate to pick on students in class. Wouldn't take this prof again.
Course itself was very easy. Attending lectures is useless, simply read and take notes of each chapter and do the review questions he provides for an easy A+. 2 super quizzes very easy, midterm and final are long but easy.
He's good if you use the materials in his courses. The textbook was uploaded to d2l, and his lectures were liquid gold, in my opinion. The notes he told the class to take were incredibly helpful for studying and any of the open-book examinations, which were most of them except for the final.
be prepared to learn the material before the class or you will be completely lost when he goes over his examples in class if you go over everything before and go to his class you will be very well prepared and have a good understanding of the material Joel has lots of availability for help outside of class if you need.
He seems friendly and caring, but due to old age. He has difficulty seeing people in dark areas of the room and hearing students due to failing hearing aids.
Joel was extremely disrespectful towards students and created a very uncomfortable learning environment. He would randomly pick on students to answer questions and would belittle them in front of the entire class if they answered wrong. In addition, if you walk in late, leave early, or text on your phone, he will stop the lecture and call you out.
Joel provides good resources for you to succeed he has a weekly chapter textbook with many practice questions and also posts a midterm review and helpful videos only downside is that you have to learn the concepts on your own before.
This man was a decent prof and made it pretty easy to understand accounting. Once you got to the midterms, they were unreasonably harder concepts and the final is very unpredictable. Left the final thinking I aced it and ended up with a 62.
Joel's lectures are great. The way he teaches is old school, which others may not like but I personally enjoy them. He is very straightforward but reasonable guy; if you have any concerns just reach out to him beforehand and he may be able to help you. Just don't come to class late cause there's a good chance he'll call you out.
You have to teach yourself everything from scratch on your own gives unfair exams told us their would be max 12 transactions and their ended up being over 20 exam questions were extremely long with no opportunity for part marks and half the exam being either right to wrong.
Just bad
stay away!!!!!!!!!!!
His lectures only go over in class demo does not post answer's to them and picks on people during the lecture.
lectures are terible he expects you to learn all the material on your own.
chose literally any other prof for accounting.
Bro calls people out for no reason, real disrespectful
Picks on people all the time asked someone if they had a hot date when they left his class early gets mad at people when they need to use the washroom in the middle of the lecture.
He gives such a unfair midterm and only goes over on class demo questions instead of teaching the concepts.
does not teach the concepts from the basics makes you learn everything on your own gives unfair quizzes and exams with unclear instructions stay away.
stay away he shows no sympathy for his students.
Gives the most unfair exam and gives unclear instructions on assements.
this course is set up horribly with multiple choice and fill in the bank tests which shows pure laziness because the questions are either right or wrong when they should be giving us a exam that we show are work the format of this class is set up to make you fail without having any opportunity for partial marks on exams.
this prof is awful he spends the first 30 minutes of class blaming the class for doing poorly on his exams and weekly quizzes when he expects us to learn everything on your own if he actually used that time to teach instead of complain maybe people would actually do better in his course.
verbally abusive towards students calling them names for doing bad on midterms/weekly quizzes. calls upon students for answers during lectures, but also yelled at a student in front of the whole class for getting a question wrong and told them to use their brain before answering. no grade curving either so high chance of failing the class.
Doesn't teach his students anything. Yells at students and calls them names during class. He flexes the fact that most of his students fail the midterm and final exams. Worst prof ever
Told us the average should be 73 when he gives very unfair exams blames the students for not coming prepared when he should be teaching us.complains how we all do bad but only uses half the lecture time and spends the first 30 minutes of every lecture complaining about how bad we do on our weekly quizzes and exams.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!!!!!! Very disrespectful and shows no empathy for students. Will call you names and belittle students in front of everyone for getting questions wrong, for those who are even willing to participate. Witnessed him call someone mentally challenged/special for getting a question wrong. Horrible at teaching. Wish I could say more.
Not the best prof for this course.
Although there are many negative reviews on this Professor, I believe he is just misunderstood. He does in fact use a stern tone toward calling out the class and students, but if you don't take yourself too seriously you can understand he's just trying to get the best out of his students.
such a slow poke the only prof to bot release the accoruing exam marks what a joke.
a terible prof that nobody should take pics on people asks people how they passed highschool stay way from him
The worst prof at ryerson!!!!!
Professor Shapiro is hard on his students for a good reason. He wants us all to pass and if we understand the material and practise the questions, we can do a good job in this course. Some of the question's answers will be given in class so participation matters. Hilarious jokes with the occasional groan-worthy jokes. Accessible outside class.
This prof needs to retire already.
His class will give you mental cancer with his unfair midterm and unfair final exam.
Do yourself a favour, don't take him.
not too bad but take him thru chang
making 6 figures to barely teach anything what a joke.
awful prof.
horrible prof his lecture give me a stroke.
My dog can teach this course better then Joel.
W mans. Easy course if you pay attention and have half a brain.
It's not even the fact that he is a poor instructor (he is) but he is a disrespectful person with an utter lack of empathy. Genuinely don't understand why people like Joel Shapiro choose to become educators when they clearly have no vested interest in the success or wellbeing of their students. Switching into another class was my best decision.
Nice guys, he was funny.
Major brat.
Worst prof ever.
I'm disgusted by the things I've heard about this prof. As an educator, he has no right to belittle students, call them out and disrespect them in lectures. The type of prof you have heavily impacts your grades. Visit the tmu website and complaint. University isn't free, you don't pay to have a prof discourage you.
Very strict for no reason. Worst prof ever, avoid this guy at all costs.
This man's is such a rude person for not reason like dude your asking students questions if their wrong explain it why freaking scream and apart from that every lecture the first 20-30 mins the man is just bare yelling at everyone. AVOID him and take him only if u want someone ranting and yelling each lecture.
told us to be careful with the amount of Easter candy we ate when he's morbidly obese.
Such a rude professor. Does not care one bit and is so unprofessional. Screams at you for hours. Does not teach anything.
easy class. As a prof though he yells at students, rude, thinks hes funny, rambles on for the first 30 min, cant see so you cant sit in the back 2 rows. . Man needs to retire idek how hes teaching.
saviour joel shapiro
Everyone who gave him a 1 star review are the kids who dont pay attention and get punished by it. Joel is strict, but its reasonable. He wants his students to do well in his class. He yells at people who cant do simple elementary school arithmetic and people who dont even try to answer his questions. If you respect him, he respects you. Funny guy
I attended maybe the first two classes and never again the entire semester The unhinged elderly are unbearable He uses paper and a projector in 2024, and he couldn't even see the projector, and bonus, he couldn't even hear his own students 😂 Steer away
This professor is unprofessional and rude. On day one, he said no one would score above 60%, discouraging us from the start. He yells at students for asking questions and dismisses requests for help. He struggles to communicate, creating an unsupportive environment. Avoid taking him at all costs.
Hes a terrible person and just yells the entire class. Calls out people in class and screams at people for getting things wrong. That being said hes slightly underrated for this course as everything is online except for the final. If you took accounting in hs you are chilling, dont even need to attend class to get a decent mark.
He makes everyone in class uncomfortable with his constant yelling. Many people myself included just stopped going to class for that reason. However, if you took accounting in grade 11/12 you should be good with a little self study. So wouldnt be too worried if hes the only prof that fits ur schedule unless ur completely unfamiliar with accounting
He's a nice prof. His teaching methods are old but he tries his best to make students understand the concepts. He just wants students to do well. He shouts sometimes but that's his way of teaching. All the quizzes and midterm were online. But the final was kinda difficult and the average every year is 60%. He's an easy prof if u have a brain.
Im convinced he bots his reviews because there is no way a real person would give him 5 stars. Sure the class is pretty easy, but this guy is literally just rude and unprofessional. He wastes an hour of every class ranting abt useless stuff. Ex. He will spend 30 mins ranting abt people who dont come class, to students who are in class.
Old school prof. Likes to call on students sitting in the aisle seats and lecture them when they aren't paying attention. Dude thinks he's funny and likes to tell bad jokes. Super annoying, was better off learning independently. Midterms and quizzes online super easy. Final is alright if you study.
He's not a very nice person but he does care about making sure you understand. He gets angry at people who don't show up. He does not actually TEACH in class, he just goes over example, and expects you to learn BEFORE class from a very inconvenient hand-made textbook. Super Quizzes were easy but the midterm and final definitely need some studying.
HE DOESNT TEACH!! If you wanna teach yourself the whole course then go ahead and pick joel. I still dont understand how hes still a teacher even after all the complaints made against him. He takes the whole 3 hours talking in x0.5 speed going over 10 questions. The average on the final WAS 40%. Ive taken ACC in gr 12& 11 and still got an ok grade.
He seems to genuinely care about his students doing well. The key to the course is reading the textbook, taking notes, attending classes and doing as many practice questions as possible. He gives lots of helpful tips during class. As long as you put in the effort, you will do well.
He is brutally honest and his lectures are very informative. Be sure to attend the lectures as he does give hints about the exams. Pay extra attention to the points he shouts out or repeats as it WILL definitely appear on the exam. Lastly, do as many practice questions as you can and focus less on definitions, more on application.
He is genuinely brutal and has no respect for students or well being. He is extremely aggressive and yells at you without reason. He called our class slow, mentally challenged and illiterate multiple times a semester -- then complains to why nobody shows up to class. The super quizzes were ok. Exam average was 40% on the exam. Don't take him EVER
Just watch accounting videos online. This guy is unbearable
he calls on you in class and then will yell "NO" or "WRONG" in your face if you answer incorrectly. this is a course that you will have to teach yourself via his horrible textbook and then in class he'll tell you to not do it the way the textbook says. there are no slides. he has 3 hours and spends half of it on 3/5 examples and then dismisses you
Very friendly proff, and makes funny jokes. Don't listen bad comments. Best to attend lectured because he gives good tips
This man needs to retire, he changed my classroom twice because he could barely move around, see anyone, or hear anyone. He straight up insulted people for asking questions or not knowing an answer to a question, and also uses an elmo and printed out sheets of paper for lecture (which you can barely read). do not take him
The course itself wasn't hard, but Joel made attending class unbearable. He constantly belittles students, yelling at them if they get a question wrong and even hitting a student's chair with a cane. He refuses to use slides and starts class by saying how useless we are. My biggest piece of advice is just to use the textbook to learn the material.
so rude, so unprofessional, and very mean. if you hate people maybe don't teach??
I was in the Chang school version of ACC100 and his emails are rude, he barely explains the content in his videos which are from several years ago and have not been updated. He does not care about your performance in his course and puts tests on weekends and does not allow you to miss because of work commitments. Avoid him at all costs.
This is my third review because the prof keeps deleting it but I won't stop posting to let everyone know that no one should take him at any cost. Every student must avoid him if they care for their grade. You can take any other prof for this course but not this person. Let's see if this review gets deleted or not.
