Great professor! Dynamic and engaging. I suck at actg and had to take 211 twice. I got an A in his class. Difficult tests but you will pass if you do the work. He does not fail anyone.
While he did make Accounting easy to understand, he was very unorganized. When he tried to do an example in class he usually made up the numbers on the spot and made mistakes so we couldn't follow it. Or the examples didn't match the solutions because they are similar with random numbers changed. But a good class to take for non-accounting majors

Fun guy, smart but very unorganized and scattered, if you prefer classes with structure think about a different instructor
Attendance is not mandatory on days Duck student tickets are up for grabs.
gives many sample problems, but they're time consuming. He's very helpful, but he talks really fast and goes at a face pace. His explanations may be confusing. Really understanding and stays on task. However, he may be unorganized, but approachable.
This teacher was completely unorganized and his class was unstructured. In order to enjoy this class, or do well, you must have a stronger background in acounting. His classes were extremely frustrating and there was no book for further clarification.
This man is not only incomprehensible, but an idiot. He can not keep assignments, answer keys, or the text straight. He can't add correctly. His class is an overall nuisance. He is more than unorganized. I can hardly bare it.
Very very helpful teacher. Gives lots of examples in class, tells you exactly what is going to be on the test and sticks to it. No surprises. He drops your lowest quiz score. A little unorganized during class but overall a great guy.
This teacher seems to care too much about students learning rather than just giving them a free pass. His approach does have flaws, but it's been effective for me. He goes over many problems in class. Seems always willing to help. Sets very clear expectations for exams and provides many practice examples.
He genuinely cares about the class and the students. A great professor, however if you don't do your homework or zone out in class it would be easy to get lost, however that is true with any accounting course...
A great accounting teacher. yes, attendance is mandatory but i went to every class and didnt have to really study besides doing that. Go to class, do the homework (which doesnt take long) and there really isnt much studying needed to be done. He has a lot of energy and is very engaging. Makes class time worth it.HIghly recommended
He is the worst teacher ever. He complains more in class about how no one does the homework rather than actually teaching the information. Attendance is mandatory which is good because the class is necessary to learn the material rather than the book, however, he talks more about being moral and studious than teaching the new concepts of the week.
He is a great teacher. He sincerely wants you to do good in the class. His approach does have flaws but he has been in the field and knows what is important and wants his students to know it as well. Great teacher.
He was a great teacher and was very helpful if you did not understand the material. He wants everyone to succeed.
All time favorite prof. Great guy, really puts in the time to help you understand the material. Very approachable. Tests are exactly what he say so if you put in the time there is no reason you shouldn't do good. Definitely recommend him!
Great guy, great personality, he makes accounting as interesting as it can be however he can be pretty un organized at times.
Favorite professor ever! Very helpful, down to earth, wants you to succeed.
Great guy and a great teacher. Entertaining for an accounting teacher and was on top of the work. He definitely didn't take any crap from anyone so do what is told and you will do great in the class.
Great Professor! Very entertaining in class and a real genuine guy. He gives you everything you need to succeed. Just use his in class exercises and do not focus completely on his practice Tests he posts. the tests will often consist of problems drawn directly from the In class problems.
One of the best teachers at UO. Accounting still sucks but he makes it at least interesting.
One of the worst professors i've ever had.. He tests you on things he teaches in class but he throws in "tricks" and makes accounting 5 times harder to understand then it already is. I had an awful term with this guy. I wish UO had more choices of teachers for accounting 213 :-(
He's a great professor, he made accounting not that completed easier to understand
He likes to throw tricks on the quiz, some of the content on the exam is somewhat incomprehensible. And he goes too fast in the lecture, not recommand
I can't believe I paid so much money to take this class.. Unbelievably bad teacher.
Awful teacher.. Constantly making mistakes in his in class examples. All he does is copy his notes. Goes way to fast on material that is not that easily understood. I wish UO had another accounting 213 teacher to take. This guy should not be teaching.
It is a good teacher, but too many homework, quiz, and exam.
Sneed is a great Professor. He does make some mistakes in class but he is real. He will tell you everything that is going to be on the test and it's up to you to put in the work. Work hard and you'll get a B
you get what you put in. he gives you everything you need to do well and it's up to you whether or not to use it! i thought he was a great professor, makes mistakes in class which was a tad frustrating but if you make a small mistake on a test he takes off only that point, even if that one mistake caused other mistakes. i think he's fair and helpfu
Pay attention and go to class and you will get an A :)
He's a really nice guy, very approachable and wants to help, but I just couldn't really learn under his style. He makes a lot of mistakes and I personally got more confused listening to his lectures than reading the book. His tests are also very tricky and long, which I didn't like because I was rushing throughout them and made dumb mistakes.
Best teacher ever! He is really smart, patient, and funny.
Not a fan of his teaching style. He makes multiple mistakes - in each class. It's hard to take him seriously when as a class we have to consistently correct him. He's also very disorganized. His blackboard site is so jumbled. His tests, homework, and practices contain spelling and number errors that are so frustrating. Wouldn't recommend him.
Great guy, pretty good teacher. He is very funny and approachable and clearly a family man, but pretty disorganized. I loved that he brought handouts to class and he pretty much tells you exactly what will be on the exams. Not great with blackboard and makes small mistakes frequently. Nonetheless, I'd still recommend him.
He brings handouts to all the classes which makes taking helpful notes really easy. Tells you what to study for tests, and posts a lot of practice exams on blackboard. Homework is based on completion for the most part. If you go to class and pay attention you should do pretty well in the class.
Joel is one of the best professors I've had so far. He is very straight forward with his expectations of the class but that just motivates students to work hard. He teaches by doing a ton of example problems in class. I never even touched the book! He moves pretty fast though, so be prepared to go to office hours. Very approachable. Love him!
He realizes he makes mistakes and then he fixes them anyway. It is a good idea to read the book along with attending lectures to fully understand the topics in this course.
Good teacher. Teaches through examples in class. If you practice the examples he gives you over and over you will do well on exams! I didn't once use the actg. book... definitely don't need it. Would highly recommend taking actg 213 with Joel.
The class was completely unorganized and unstructured, as were his notes. Purchasing the book was a complete waste of time, as it was never used. Very poor at returning e-mails, and the syllabus used was one from a completely different term with different dates. Overall it was an extremely frustrating experience to be in this class.
Joel is an amazing teacher, but his style is definitely unique. Come prepared to think quickly and learn through examples, not to blindly copy down PowerPoint slides. He's fun, fair, and very honest/frank about everything, which can be hilarious.
Prof. Sneed teaches everything himself through lectures and examples and he then he tests you on that information; which is great. My only critique is that he can be a little all over the place at times. Take GOOD notes and practice, practice, practice and you will do well.
Great guy, although a little bit unorganized. Everything you need to know for the tests he teaches you through lecture and doing examples. Take Good notes and practice all the time, way more than you think is needed even, and you will be surprised at how well you will do. That is how straight forward his class was.
Joel can be extremely confusing sometimes because he makes a good amount of mistakes, or at least he did in my class. It is hard to catch on sometimes because accounting is all numbers. however, joel is very understanding/nice and ended up curving my grade a lot at the end because i told him i needed a certain grade to get into the business school
Sneed is a boos, he pretty much wings these classes because you can tell the accounting is so elementary to him at this level. He makes a lot of little math mistakes that the class has to correct him on, but he definitely knows his stuff. Recommend taking him for any actg class
I’ve never been more frustrated and confused while sitting in a UO class. Sneed used math not taught on Earth. He would round monetary values and give wrong answers. It’s unacceptable that a professor, who is a CPA and has a Ph.D, got so much wrong in class. I would recommend finding a different university that hires competent ACTG 213 professors.
Extremely unorganized and makes countless errors on notes and homework assignments. Very frustrating class.
Joel is a great guy and is honest. His tests are very straight forward. People who use the excuse about him being messy need to grow up. His class is easy if you try just like any class. Don't be upset with results you don't get from effort you don't give.
Though I got a good grade in this class, I still dont like him. His class is extremely unorganized and chaotic. I almost forget everything in this class after the final exam. Not suggest to take his course.
Professor Sneed genuinely cares about his students. His lectures can be fast paced, but he is more than willing to answer questions. He is extremely accessible to students and I highly recommend using his office hours.
Read the text in advance like he actually assigns and you'll be fine. He goes through his lectures with you with pen and paper so he messes up sometimes but don't worry about that. He is just trying to vibe with you and relate.
Joel knows a lot and goes a little fast in lectures. He gives practice exams before every test and if you do those and know how to do them you will get a B or better in the class. Like all accounting classes, your grade really depends on the effort you put in.
Sneed's an overall alright professor. I wouldn't say he's amazing because he certainly doesn't go out of his way to help out, but he's also alright at explaining the material. He fills in the notes handouts as he goes, so it is easy to follow along. All the exams for all ACTG 211 classes were the same, made by one accounting professor.
He is a funny and helpful instructor. Love his classes.
His teaching style is unique. His powerpoint/lectures are not very helpful because he just talks the entire time and does not really engage the class. He also always talks about examples and stories from his life that aren't really relevant and shows that he's a little bit of a know it all. He also makes many mistakes during class examples.
Joel makes consistent mistakes during class. If it was occasionally it would not be an issue, but it is so frequent that often mistakes were not realized until days later after the process had already been made confusing. I had difficulty following when every few minutes we had to jump back to correct errors.
The best accounting professor I have had at the university. He is easy to understand and actually cares about the material and the students. It's not the easiest class ever, but he makes it clear what students need to do in order to be successful.
Very nice and easy to understand
Professor Sneed is one of my favorite professors that I've had this year. He's really helpful and tends to give to a lot of worksheets to help you actually practice what you've learned. My class generally had a somewhat higher average on the midterms and I scored above average on the tests. Definitely take Professor Sneed if you can!
He utilized the online Connect program which was extremely helpful. HW done online, except first 3 also handed in. He knows what he's talking about. Prepares you for exams and reviews every quiz and exam after. You learn a lot and he cares about his students being successful! I'll take classes from him anytime I can.
Joel means well but is very confusing in his lectures which is not helpful in such a difficult class. The class was curved almost 10% at the end of the terms so don't freak out if you don't do good on the tests. The class is definitely designed to weed out people who plan on being accounting students.
Avoid this class if you can. Joel is an extremely nice person, but this class is the most frustrating one I've ever taken. You'll need to be able to teach yourself the material, the lectures and homework definitely don't prepare you for the tests. The curve ended up being an entire letter grade since everyone in the class did so horrible.
I really enjoyed Joel's teaching style. He works through problems in class which keeps me engaged. He's energetic and caring and while the class is very challenging he try's to make things understandable and applied.
Joel is very accommodating, midway through the term he wanted everyone to give him feedback on what he could do to improve. He's also very helpful in office hours. It's a difficult class, but he's very lenient with giving partial credit on everything, and I learned a ton in his class.
He don't even know what is the grading rule for the work. Time arrangement is poor. Heavy work. No feedback before test. Poor test design.
He's very knowledgeable about accounting, but seems to talk to students like they're all 3rd year accounting majors. "This is really simple stuff" was said a lot when students were frustrated. His notes were easy to follow, but he makes frequent small mistakes which can derail the entire class.
A great introduction to the intermediate sequence. A lot of studying is required, but Joel really wants to do best by his students and welcomes any and all questions we have, especially before exams.
Joel is not a great professor. He made tons of errors in class, didn't understand what he was teaching, and had errors on test problems. Avoid this class if you can.
Joel is a really nice man. However, his communication skills were remarkably poor in my experience, not once responding to an email I sent him. His lectures are fine, but the material is dense and difficult, and if you lose him at any point you likely won't be able to tune back into the lecture. Rely on your own time to study, with others if u can.
I really enjoyed taking his class! I took his class online, and the class structure was perfectly organized and easy to follow along with. He was always very approachable and helpful with accommodating with my test-taking schedule. He offered me solid career advice, and is one of my favorite professors because he helped me excel in a hard class.
Joel Sneed was a great professor. He always did so many example problems in class which is something I wish more professors would do. It's clear that he cares about his students success. He was always happy to help when I would go in for office hours and wanted to make sure you fully understood the material. His tests were challenging but fair.
He's willing to help if you go to his office hours. Course is fairly difficult since it's a gatekeeper for the accounting major.
Great teacher. Joel really cares about his student's success and you can see that demonstrated in his videos posted online. Definitely recommend seeing him during office hours as you're guaranteed a helpful response to all inquires--as he can be slow on email responses. This is a hard class, but that's expected due to its necessity to the major.
At first, I think his teaching style is confusing to a lot of people. But, give it some time. If you pay attention and come to class, you will come to realize that Professor Sneed is very helpful on exams and homework. The work that you do in class is very similar to exams. Also, he is very helpful in office hours. Would highly recommend his class
Joel is a good lecturer, and is always willing to help. Willing doesn't mean capable though; his "help" is encouragement at its best. The quality of materials is awful, everything that is explained to you is what has to be done, but not how it works and why it happens.
Professor Sneed has such a messy way of teaching. He also gives so much workload due in a little amount of time. You would have to listen very hard in order to grab some sort of idea on what he is teaching.
Prof Sneed is a good professor, and teaches a good class. The material is hard, so if you miss a lecture, you can easily fall behind. Really funny guy in class, and always available for office hours and lending a hand. Tough class, so make sure you don't miss the lectures.
Joel was a great professor. Class is pretty hard, and you can't really miss lectures. Mr. sneed is a really nice guy outside of class. Not too much homework at all, and attendance is not counted. Big tests though
Bad. Very bad.
No clue how his rating is this high. All he does is solve problems in class on the projector, and it's clear that he hasn't gone over any of them, as he makes mistakes and gets corrected by students multiple times per class. Seems like he tries to trick you on tests, as it's nothing like the practice material. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM.
Sneed means well but his teaching is confusing and wrong a lot of the time too. He doesn't lecture the material and give formulas, he just starts doing problems in pencil and draws arrows to numbers but makes some mistakes. He's a funny and nice guy but you basically have to teach yourself because his teaching makes the material harder than it is.
Nice guy, but an awful professor. Constantly makes mistakes and doesn't know what he's doing. Very confusing teaching style. You're going to have to teach yourself the material. Absolutely sign up for class encore for this course, it will save you.
Professor is confusing, makes many mistakes in class. Concepts in class are not explained well. He goes straight into examples without explaining where numbers come from / why. hard to follow along. Must have full attention in class. You must teach yourself the concepts, not very straight forward in class. Avoid this professor if possible.
I honestly didn't take this class but my boy has had joel sneed for 3 terms now and I have seen it take a tremendous toll on his mental health. He has barely gotten out of bed or showered in 6 weeks and he now walks around the house mumbling under his breath "joeeeel sneeeeed". BEWARE OF THE TALE OF JOEL SNEED
Joel is a nice person but is not a good professor and I have no idea how he has such a good rating. All he does the whole "lecture" is go over practice questions, he goes wayyy too fast and he is constantly getting the answers wrong, students are also always correcting him on these problems. Do not take his class if there is another option!!
Joel gets a lot of hate, which is not always valid. He definitely goes very fast and the lecture is basically just practice problems, but he does care and wants you to learn. If you go to lecture and work hard the class is very manageable. I liked him, I would 100% take another accounting class if he was teaching it.
Joel Sneed is a very caring guy but he is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He does not help you understand the material, he only ever goes over worksheets and is constantly making mistakes. Students have to constantly correct him on mistakes he makes (every single lecture) and it makes it very difficult to learn. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
While Professor Sneed is a nice enough guy, his lectures are abysmal. The material itself is not terribly difficult, but I've taken Biochem classes that were less confusing than his lectures. When corrected on the excessive mistakes he makes, he sometimes becomes borderline rude. I have a 99% in the class & still would warn others to not take him.
Professor Sneed seemed like a nice guy but his lectures were difficult to follow as he didn't use Powerpoint ever and instead relied on using pieces of paper to solve problems in front of the class. All term he claimed there would be a curve at the end of the course but there was not. Lectures are long and painful as he makes errors throughout.
One of toughest classes at UO, and I reccomend taking this class immediately following 211. Definately a class where you can't miss a lecture or you will fall behind, so dont miss class, despite attendance not being mandatory. There is a curb at the end of the class, and most of the grade is test scores.
He is very bad with technology. Also, he made students have to print out the slideshows before class. Most of his lectures involve just going over practice problems with very limited actual teaching.
Joel Sneed seemed extremely full of himself, while making a lot of mistakes during his own lectures. Everything he told the class was inconsistent, and he seems to think someone's stupid for asking for clarification. If you want to attempt to enjoy managerial accounting, choose another professor.
Tests are incredibly difficult and his lectures are basically just him messing up example problems. Class has a pretty nice curve to it though.
even asynchronously his recorded lectures were dogshit, watered down regurgitations of the textbook (doesnt state things plainly, b4 examples).also the syllabus module where he talked about the class he filmed while shirtless on a beach in Greece. Take the class but i advise you only use the textbook for everything and dont even bother w/ his vids.
Unreachable when it mattered most for the class. Course work is fine but him being unresponsive really affected my experience with the class.
Bro cannot teach to save his life. He messed up so many times in class and was so hard to follow
He can't teach. He is a great accountant but he doesn't explain stuff that help people learn accounting. He takes forever to respond to my emails, he doesn't give us time in class to do practice problems, he just goes over them and expects us to remember. I could write a 5-page essay and name it "How Not to Teach, a Letter to Incoming Professors."
Simply awful. He never taught the class, and would instead just do problems in front of us and expected us to absorb the material via osmosis. I once emailed him about a scheduling issue I had, and never heard back from him. Hands down the worst professor I had in my time at UO. I would say avoid him, but there was no other option when I registered
ACGT 352 Lectures are long and he tries to teach, but once we move to examples there are constant mistakes being made whether its calculations or wrong numbers being written. You could see the confusion on everyone's face because a lot of us didn't know what was going on. The only beneift was how much he curved the course.
Pretty hard class but curves on the test are nice. Helpful in office hours, but you definately dont want to miss a lecture in this class, even though attendance doesn't count towards the grade.
Worst professor I've ever had at UO. Don't bother emailing him, I emailed him SEVERAL times and never received a response. Expects you to grasp the material and follow along and makes constant mistakes during lecture. Half the stuff on the midterms isn't even what he explained, looks like a dollar store John Malkovich.
Horrible. His lectures make no sense. He would constantly contradict himself and you would need to call him out on his problem process for him to do it in a way that would actual work. Nothing he did in the class prepared me for the test and if you pursued him for out of class help it would actively make you more confused then when you started.
Couldn't assign more work if he wanted to. Bad educator, smart guy.
Sneed was perfect for the first part of the term because the material was more math-based. So all he does is walk you through steps with examples and it's fairly easy. After the Midterm the class gets tougher because it's more concept-heavy and he struggles to teach it. Overall he's not a bad teacher, but he has a unique teaching style.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! His lectures are so unorganized as is all of the content, he goes ghost if you try to email him for clarification, is inaccessible for office hours so you have zero help, and the tests are very difficult because they're proctored in person in the library for 2 hours. Worst 8 weeks of my life!!!!!!!!!!!
Assignments are lengthy and there are a lot of them. Way too much busy work
do not take joel sneed. trust.
NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS. Lectures are him going through problems the entire time, not once does he teach. The homework's fine, but he's a tough grader on midterms, which are so different from what he goes through in class. Don't waste your time trying to contact him either, he never answers emails and doesn't even show up for his own office hours.
I am sure that he is a very nice guy, but honestly makes the class way harder than it needs to be. His class is HEAVY on showing up to lectures, but the lectures aren't even super useful. He does provide study material, but you are basically teaching yourself all the material. Look at other options, IMO.
Lectures weren't mandatory, but labs were. I was able to teach myself most of the content (because I was too lazy to go to class half the time) but following along with examples during lectures definitely did help. It's accounting, so it's an awful class, but I don't think Joel was as bad as people are saying.
Terrible communicator and will barely respond to emails. Luckily, my GE would respond to emails super quickly. I would say go to lectures, but they aren't super helpful since he doesn't teach concepts well. For every midterm, I had to teach myself everything, but he has GREAT practice materials available, which is a plus.
Tough class, but the curves help. Lectures are messy, but office hours are useful. Definitely attend class - Unstuck study was a lifesaver for practice problems.
I love Joel, as a person, friend, mentor, he truly is one of a kind. Yes, during his lectures he will get problems wrong and go on the occasional tangent. But he always comes with high energy and a willingness to teach. He is always open for criticism or to explain topics. Show up, go talk to him, you will do just fine. Seriously great guy.
Sneed struggles with his organizational skills a lot. If you can get over the disorganization of the canvas page and inconsistency with posting of homework / practice problems, then Sneed is a good teacher. He knows the material well is passionate and cares about students, however this can't overcome how bad his organizational skills are.
This teacher is awful. Taking async class, yet constantly getting announcements for the in person version. Sent multiple emails early in term and have yet to hear back. Avoid, avoid, avoid..
Absolutely no help or communication, which is super needed from an online class. Homeworks are insane busy work
I actually really like the guy. He's funny, but as a teacher he's super disorganized. When we go over practice problems he doesn't even give you a chance to read the problem or try to attempt it. He basically just does all the work and then is like, "You guys understand right?" Also does math wrong way to often for being a teacher. Try to avoid
I took Joel's class, and overall, it was a good experience. While he can sometimes be slow to reply to emails and a bit disorganized, he always makes time to meet with students in person and assist them with personal issues one-on-one. I liked Mr. Sneed; he was very flexible about scheduling exams on days that worked better for me.
He is a very nice person and is passionate about his job. That being said, he is not good at teaching a class. He just goes through practice problems without explaining the concepts being used. Unless you already have a firm knowledge of the subject or are willing to spend time to teach yourself the course, do not take his class.
Worst class management, consistent mistakes in grading, Uploaded practice test day of test 5 minutes before the exam at 8am. Dude is learning with the students at the same time. Homework contains material that were not taught at all in class and no resources. Long midterm. He is confused while teaching which leads to students being confused.
I took this class in person last term but dropped mid-term. It felt much easier and the homework was lighter. The online version feels unstructured, little communication, not responsive to emails, unclear grades, and study guides that don't match the tests. I've felt lost most of the time. I'd recommend a different teacher or in-person option.
He's Terrible, took this class online and it has been the worst experience. He's unreachable, doesn't respond to emails, and didn't even publish the office hour link, theres literally no way of reaching him. He doesn't bother trying to prepare you for tests. DON'T take this class with Professor Sneed your better off being taught by a 2 year old.
Awful professor. Lectures are impossible to follow due to the constant mistakes and unorganization. He gives 0 time to practice the problems in class. He makes the exams so hard that most of the class fails and then curves the class 10%. Does not respond to emails or follow through on promises. He claims to be average but he is way below average.
This course makes no sense. There are so many ghost links. The assignments are posted randomly and without lecture. Throughout my academic career I've taken nothing but AP and accelerated courses. I have never encountered a course as horrific as this one. No organization, absurdly difficult homework that takes 2-4 hours per assignment (by design).
Inaccessible outside of class, completely disorganized course online during the summer, total lack of clarity in assignments, tests, and the overall course. The online lectures were pretty thorough, though, but that's about it.
Beat the curve, remember this is a gatekeeper class to the upper division accounting major. I recommend studying cash flows, receivables, and FIFO LIFO changes. Midterm was easier than the final, the final has receivables and a lot of people struggle with those. Watch his Panopto videos and go through problems listed in the videos, it will help.
The most unorganized, incompetent professor I've ever dealt with. Avoid if possible. Doesn't know his own lectures, makes 5-10 mistakes per class that students have to call him out on. Learn the material on your own before class, and use class time as review - if you come to class expecting to learn the chapter, you will be lost.
Prof Sneed is a great guy, but his lectures are very confusing/he makes mistakes a lot of mistakes. I found teaching myself the material and watching the videos posted to be more helpful. Quizzes are very hard, exams aren't as bad but still difficult. He's always willing to answer questions, but get ready to put in a lot of work outside of class.
Joel is the most disorganized teacher I have ever had in my life and he moves so fast during lectures that its nearly impossible to keep up. He also does not set you up for success on exams whatsoever. If you are studying for his tests do NOT use the long answer exam prep questions, they do not show up on the test at all. Just use class notes.
This is the third accounting class I have taken with Sneed. He is a really nice guy, who definitely cares about his students. However, the only way to pass his classes are to teach yourself all the material outside of class. Going to lecture isn't very beneficial, but he does provide a lot of study material that I would use along with his slides.
had a decent experience taking his async 211. lectures were very informative. homework was a bit tedious but fine. lots of study materials. tests were tricky but manageable. good curve for overall grade. however, canvas was disorganized. didn't respond to a few emails. all in all a mixed experience but would take again.
