Oh my gosh...he sucks! Droned on even on the first day. Switch your schedules!
boring lectures, impossible tests and very boring
lectures are right on blackboard..no need to go...tests are all essay form.
lectures are all on blackboard, get ready to write a lot
Few points and extremely hard tests. Take the material seriously.
he takes things to slow, fixes his sweater TOO much!!! annoying
fixes sweater to much, blows nose 20 times in 10 min, easy but long tests
Kinda biased, but the class was fun. Good Prof
cool guy, no reason to go to class though. Hard to follow n take notes in class
Very intelligent, but kind of boring.
Really nice guy, but real boring class. Exams are all writing.
Lectures are interesting and exams are easy if you study the study guides he gives you. Kind of annoying with taking his sweater on and off but he is really nice!
Very interesting lectures. Gives you a study guide and the exams are taken directly from them. All exams are essays. Nice Professor!
The class is hard work and there is a lot to do, but I found him very helpful. Although his lectures can sometimes be boring, he was very helpful with our projects, even used classtime to discuss them. Showed three movies during class to tie in topics.
teaches by example, not out of a textbook. Nice and helpful but kind of boring lectures, notes are on blackboard and that is really all you need. Gives the answers to exam before hand, all exams are essay.
His class consists of 3 papers, listening to 15 radio programs, a midterm and a final. Easy enough if you read the books and read the slides.
Very boring lectures!!
Great class! All the information/books are relevant to current events. He really makes the class applicable to real life. Class is only boring if you don't read the books or participate. Great guy, fair, smart. I think he's great!
This has been by far my favorite elective so far. He makes the class very enjoyable. The books we read were very helpful-just make sure you read them to do well. He is also very helpful with his students-definitly take him!
I give thanks to God for such an easy class. Literal CAKE WALK. And I actually learned without trying, it's amazing!
SOOO much busy work. This class should be an SWS. He can be interesing, but the lectures are very repeitive. Puts all notes on blackboard, then just goes over notes. Takes attendence, and marks you down if you dont go. Take someone else if possible.
Very hard grader, a lot of reading expected, and he is very hard to be personable with.
Nice guy. Funny. A lot of work and reading, but kind of interesting. Easy exams, gives you the questions before the exams. Books are boring at times.
Very boring lecture PLUS mines 3 hours long. Repeats himself all the time and there is no reason to attend class except for the fact that he takes attendance and will deduct from your grade at the end of the semester if you dont come! I hate this class...it drags.
I hate this class.. It is SO boring! But I guess it is easy.
Easy class, just read the books and you will do fine. He tells you the exact questions that will be on the exam ahead of time. He lets you redo your papers multiple times to increase your grade.
Nice guy. Easy class but boring. Avoid a 6-9 if at all possible, you stare at the clock the entire time! Gives you questions for exams before hand, and lets you rewrite your papers to improve your grade. Overall, it's easy.
Easy Class. I was not too interested in the subject before taking the class, but this guy is a great teacher. Try to avoid the 6-9, this is way too long to sit through any teacher's lecture.
boring lectures, monotone voice. you have to really enjoy the topic to enjoy the class, cuz he won't spice it up.
BORING class, very arrogant professor.
he is a really nice prof. there is tons of reading and a few papers during the semester. sometimes it feels like an SWS course. it isn't a very hard class, just make sure you have the time to read all the material.
Good professor who knows his stuff. Boring lectures (especially for a 6-9) but at times material is fairly interesting. Only books to read, no text book. Papers are not difficult but you need to read the books. Exams are not hard because he gives you questions before hand. Good class, I'd recommend.
Great teacher, pretty easy grader. The class itself was kind of boring. But he remained interested and enthusiastic about the class. Did his best to keep students interest.
I loved this class. Unlike most of my other classes I will take away a lot of interesting info. Highly reccomended-but keep up on the reading. Not to hard of a class
He was so overly boring me and my classmates couldnt stand it. He doesnt use a textbook, which is nice. He chooses books for us to read instead. I lost interest reaslly fast each day. Might have been better to not have him for 3 hours. If you take a class with him, choose a shorter one!
He is a good prof. Very liberal and makes it obvious that any other view is unacceptable. I recommend him for Soc 280...try not to take the 3 hr. class.
I had the 3 hr class, and it wasn't so bad b/c he gave two breaks. Class was very organized, but much writing! He allows re-writes on papers, which helps. Exams are also essay. If you're a poor writer, don't take him. Otherwise, he's a go.

i didn't really mind the three hour class. the material can be kind of boring, but he tries to make it interesting.he grades pretty easy, but there's a lot of writing
a lot of writing and he is a tough grader. he compares classes too much. he is friendly and tries to get class discussions going. he takes attendance for every class!
Great prof, one of the best in the SOC department. Even though urban soc wasn't something I was really excited about the class was fun. Very helpful guy, willing to do a lot to make sure you suceed. Make sure you go to class. 2 freebies 3rd u lose 3% of ur overall grade.
Lots of reading, and harder reading than i've had before. Difficult concepts to grasp. 6 Blackboard quizzes over the readings and either 4 short papers or one large research paper. It is definitely a 400-level class, so be prepared for a lot of reading and hard quiz and test questions. Class averages pretty low (around 70-80%).
He's a nice guy who means well but I dont think his teaching is that great. I got thru the class without reading any of the novels and pretty much got A's on all of the online quizzes by using context clues. He's a hard grader when it comes to papers/essays seems like he doesnt believe in A's. I really didnt learn anything from the class though.
Lots of reading, lots of short writing assignments that I usually didn't start till 2 hrs before class, lots of quizes on bb that are timed but if you've read, they'll only take you less than 15 mins. Strict attend. policy, but offers make up papers. Certainly knows what he's talking about.
Doesnt sugarcoat anything for you. If you raise your hand and dont agree with his communist views on society, he'll basically just say you're wrong. He grades pretty easily, but expects you to be super motivated for 15 page research papers as if this class was your major and not just a gened. If i had to do it again, id pick another Junior Semnr
High expectations...he assigns long reading assignments and 10-15 page papers all semester long so dont expect any breaks or downtime. interesting topics on consumer culture that lead to good discussions. tries to help as much as possible. very knowledgable on the topics. good professor but get ready to work.
Definitely a sociologist because he's definitely a socialist. Spends a lot of time senselessly berating our sitting government, whether that's what we're paying so much to hear or not. Still, he seems to know what he's talking about part of the time. Lots of reading and fairly difficult quizzes. Definitely a 400-level class.
He's a pretty good prof. Reading assignments and quizzes every week; then a midterm and a final. Also 4 essays throughout the semester, he lets you send him a draft which is nice. I would recommend him.
This professor is great except he assigns way too much homework. four 2 page papers, 4 one page papers, 2 finals and a quiz every week its crazy and super stressful i would recommend him if you dont have a full class load what if you do dont take him
Definitely made class extremely boring. He assigns way too much homework and honestly I dreaded having to go and listen to his lectures. I would highly recommend taking a different professor or just a different course all together
Very nice and helpful. Willing to listen to students input. Very easy to get a hold of if you have a question. He really cared about what he was teaching.
Good teacher, weekly online quiz's are for your own good otherwise I would have never read the books. They're are 4-2pg. papers that correspond with reading fairly simple. 2 tests that are very straight forward, if you read the books. Helps students outside of class. Overall very good prof keep up on the work and its really no problem.
Prof. Stillerman is a great professor. He clearly states his expectations in the class and is very easy to talk to. Although, the class is a lot of work. Weekly online quiz, one midterm and the final, 3 essays, and one page journal entries. In order to do well you must pat attention and read the book. If you put in the effort an A is achievable.
Great teacher! Very informative and will work with you to help you get the grade you think you deserve. Allows extra credit and make-up assignments. Class is a lot of work, but you will learn a lot about the subject.
Professor Stillerman was a pretty great professor. He was helpful outside of class and as long you attend lecture and do the readings his quizzes and exams were straightforward and easy.
LOVED this class and professor. He is very helpful, and open to anything you want to say in class discussions. Very clear, and he posts all of his notes online. weekly quizzes are easy peasy and tests aren't bad either, definitely recommend
Weekly quizzes are easy, class can be kind of boring, and he will never let you out early. The papers are pretty easy, and he's always ready to help you with them. He looks like Randall from Monster's Inc. Moderately interesting class, but kind of awkward when no one reads the chapters. 2 free absences.
You have to go to class! Here's why: if you miss 2 your grade will not change, miss 3 you drop 2%, miss 4 you drop 4%, miss 5 and you drop 6%. See the pattern? It sucks but if you go to every class its + 2%. However, if you do the reading (which is a lot) you'll be fine. There will be online reading quiz every week- they are curved and not too hard
He's very smart and know's what he's talking about. LOTS of reading every week, but once you read, the weekly quizzes are easy. Must go to lectures to pass the class I would say. Pretty straight forward on what's expected in the class. Overall wasn't bad, if I had to take it again, I would take it with him.
Very helpful if you have a hard time understanding topics. Wish I had been more on top of reading the textbook in order to be more engaged in the interesting discussions that occurred.
Class is an open discussion (participation is graded) and he takes attendance. He gives quizzes each week that are due before the first class of the week. Reading is recommended, but you can get away with just skimming chapters. There are two papers, a midterm, and the final. Gives extra credit. Very nice guy!
He does the standard lectures, tries to be a little engaging, but for the most part it's hard to stay awake. Participate because that factors into your grade! He does a good job of conveying the info and even posts lectures on BB. Tests aren't bad at all, they follow study guide to a T. Only thing I didn't like was how he weighted our grades.
He was an alright professor. Every class was a basic lecture from a powerpoint with some class discussion here and there; I was usually pretty bored. Not very hard though as long as you study the study guide he gives for each test. Weekly online quizzes over the readings - lots of reading but you can get by skimming. Takes attendance everyday!
Professor Stillerman is a really nice guy. In order to pass you really have to come to class. He assigns some long readings, but they are worth the time. I learned soooooo much from this class that I can apply to everyday life. Taking this class really changed my perspective on things in a positive manner. He is great!
If you pay attention to all the readings you will never need to study for the midterm or final. It helps that the textbooks are relatively interesting. Lectures are pointless, but required, because he just repeats the textbook's information, but in not enough detail to substitute reading. Go to every class for an extra 2% on your final grade. EasyA
Professor Stillerman gives 2 reading assignments per week plus an online memo, 3 essays and 2 exams (objective and essay). He is sometimes difficult to understand what hes trying to get across. Participation is 6% of your grade. However, the class was what you'd expect of an upper level soc class. I'd suggest him again though, just get ready to work
Stillerman gives you reading memos due before EVERY class period, and grades harshly on them as well. He is always behind on grading. On the final exam day, there were still 6 assignments not graded. He also assigns three hard, time-consuming papers, and three exams that are very difficult. I would not recommend taking him for this course.
This professor was the WORST. Assignments due every class period that he grades very harshly on. He is extremely unfair with his grading. So much reading and his is super boring. Lectures drag on. Three papers and three extremely difficult exams. Do not take him!
Stillerman has def changed his class structure since the last few reviews. In the beginning, I found the class a little boring but once you get moving, the topics become really interesting and I learned a lot! There's a little bit of everything in this class (presentations, papers, readings, etc). If you make a genuine effort, you'll do fine.
Hard grader, but worked with me when I had trouble on my paper (redo). This was an issues course, but I learned a lot. Read a lot of books with 1 memo due every week. Midterm and Final are easy! He gives you a great study guide so definitely complete it and you'll get an A. If you put in the effort, you should be fine!
I took this class for my honors sequence. Stillerman's a really nice guy, but he assigns a LOT of reading. He is willing to work with you if you ever have any issues. Fair grader when it comes to essays. Actually made this honors sequence enjoyable and I feel like I actually learned something from this class.
This class is a ton of work with reading assigned every class period and reading quizzes every week. He expects us to read a chapter in the book plus 2 extra readings every week. Its a lot of busy work and his exams don't really follow his lectures. He lectures with lots of details but the exam is very basic. Lots of short answers and essays
lots of lecturing not needed for the exam. too much reading with assignments due every class period. bad at assisting in class discussion. very tough grader and unclear as to why he grades that way. participation matters and perfect attendance may get you extra cred. nice guy though
He's very lecture heavy and it tends to get boring, but you can tell he tries his best to keep it interesting. He's very into class participation and encourages people to speak up. The weekly reading is not as bad as people say. I ended up with a B, but I didn't apply myself so it's my fault. Could have been an easy A. Would take again.
He relies heavily on the readings which can be difficult at times and then the tests are structured around the readings. His lectures can get a bit long and boring but are very helpful in summarizing the readings if you didn't understand. Participation matters and if you miss class too many times, grade goes down. But perfect attendance boosts it!
Very accessible but tough grader
Overall, this class was fine. He is a very nice guy if you talk to him and will always meet with you when requested. He is a VERY tough grader (especially on papers) so go into his office and ask him to look over it. He will mark it up as if he were actually grading it. If you make all the corrections you will get close to 100% on the actual paper.
He comes off as a little quiet and nerdy but is really approachable and passionate about his class. He is very clear on what he wants and gives great feedback. His lectures are a tad boring but if you pay attention in class you really can't do bad. You have to buy a few books but most you can find online. Very caring and understanding to students.
Honestly my favorite professor. While he may seem quiet at first after a few class sessions he really opens up. Lectures are very insightful, funny, and give you (almost) all the information you need to get high scores on the assignments. Make sure to ask questions and contact him outside of class for the best experience
My favorite professor at GV. So caring and understanding with students. Being an honors course, this class can be a bit rough. Definitely worth it though this professor is amazing. Lots of essays and reading. Great feedback and always willing to explain things if you don't understand. 100% recommend, I will be taking him again.
Took this for a gen ed, and it wasn't too bad. He was definitely a little tough on the grading, two short essays and a midterm and final, but it was difficult to get an A on any. The multiple choice isn't bad, but anything with writing was graded pretty harshly. Overall a very nice guy and understanding, not a bad class and the info was interesting
Took this class for a gen Ed and I would definitely recommend this class! The content was fairly interesting and there really wasnt that much work. There are weekly quizzes on blackboard over the reading content, two essays, the midterm, creative project, and final.
The content is incredibly simple and easy, and the homework is simple. There are lots of essay's and projects, but they are clear on the criteria for the most part. Beware of political leanings in the class though. If you even have a tinge of non-left leaning bias in your paper, he will mark you down for "Academic Dishonesty".
BEST PROF EVER!! I loved his class so much. He's very knowledgeable and cares about his students. Clear expectations, lots of different assignments that impact your grade, and helpful feedback. His class was inspirational and encouraged me to add a sociology minor. There is a lot of reading, but he always goes over it to make sure you understand.
Professor Stillerman has a lot of knowledge on sociology. However, if you do not agree with his political opinions in papers, you will fail.
He made lectures interesting and was very good at listening to students! The one downside was that there was a lot of reading but that is expected in an honors course. The readings were usually interesting and we were able to have good class discussions about them. Also, participation's graded so beware if you do not like public speaking.
This was his first time teaching this class but overall pretty good. He knew what he was talking about and is quite humorous. Expect to read a lot!! There's two big project: a paper near the midterms and a group project at the end of the semester. Quite a bit of homework; memos before class on one day and a quiz due before class the next.
A bit of a tough grader, grading criteria isn't always clear. You are graded on participation and attendance. Extremely lecture heavy, halfway in the semester he started doing some group collaboration. Lectures only focused on what the issues are and not how to fix them. Prof was also cocky about his knowledge and accomplishments.
Prof. Stillerman definitely grew on me as the semester progressed. However, lectures were boring, there were no group discussions, just him talking in front of the class. The group project was a nightmare; he assigned 6 people per group. NOT feasible to match up 6 college student schedules to work on something that big.
Class felt like the same thing every day because we would read something then discuss it the next time we were in class. However, it worked although it was boring. The amount of projects/homework weren't too excessive, and it was bearable.
Class is very lecture heavy and relies on a lot of reading. Some of the readings were difficult to process and understand just because of the format of them. Class gets repetitive very fast and is always the same: discussion about reading then lecture about reading. Will take the time to meet with you outside class and is very accommodating.
Overall I enjoyed this class and the content was interesting, just lecture-heavy classes going over the same things we just read about. Not difficult to get a good grade if you keep up with the work. VERY helpful and clear during his office hours if you ask him to look over your essay. Enjoyed the final project just wish it was with smaller groups.
I took Prof. Stillerman for my honors course, and overall he was a pretty good instructor. He's very knowledgeable about the topics, but one thing he lacks is engaging lectures. His style of instructing is very monotone and boring, but overall I do understand the subject. Also be prepared to read a lot, he assigns 2 readings every week.
I took professor Stillerman for my honors sequence. The class description was very interesting, but it didn't turn out to be what I thought it would be. For his portion you basically read something and then just talk about it in class, so it's extremely boring. There is no variety in anything. It was an easy class, but I wouldn't take again.
Recommend for HNR 251. You have to work to succeed in this class but the course content is super interesting and can be applied to many different fields so it's fairly easy to absorb the content. You will have readings and homework for every class. Two exams with essays. A group project and a paper. Participation and attendance counts.
I took the class because I thought it sounded interesting, mixing statistics with inequality in the United States. Though still mildly interesting, I found the class very repetitive. Read, "guided" discussions, quiz, repeat. When asking for suggestions, Stillerman simply rationalized what he did and moved on. Don't recommend.
This class is probably the hardest soc class you'll ever have. The readings are all very complex and difficult to interpret. Aside from the course content the professor is great. You get graded on attendance and participation and he's a tough grader for papers. Expect to read a ton! 10+ hours of reading a week.
Lectures can be a little boring, and the weekly assignments are very repetitive. Quiz Thursday, memo Tuesday, repeat. Overall, fair amount of workload but very lecture heavy. Good professor.
Professor Stillerman's HNR251 class is quite engaging, though lecture-heavy. The content is interesting, and the workload is manageable if you stay on top of the readings and assignments. I found unstuck ai helpful for study prep alongside the course material.
Overall chill guy, was a very interesting class and easy to learn. He's huge on no phones or laptops though, so beware.
If you do bad on one assignment, he accuses you of using AI on every assignment you do well. He told me my essay was ‘too smooth and didn't have any mistakes,' so he assumed it had to be AI.
This professor accused me of using AI when I did not use it. When we chatted he didn't believe be even after I showed proof. He has an obvious passion for this topic and is a good professor just beware to be able to defend yourself.
