Writes too small on the overhead. Ends class half an hour early. (which shows he is not a good instructor). Quizzes are tested on how fast you can do them as opposed to your knowledge!
Bad...
Some part is tough but overall is okay, help you success in int. acct class
easy test....write too small on overhead..nice teacher
Nice and clear teacher u can understand wat ever he'll teach u but examz r really HARD He starts class on time, ends on time with NO BREAK at all, hard to pay attention with out a break cuz it is a tuff course....take him if u r a brilian student but dont expect for 'A'
Pay attention! He goes fast and uses all the class time. He's there to help, but you hafto ask. Funny guy. Don't fall behind in this class or you're f***ed.
He is the best accounting instructor. Pay attention to his lectures and notes. Review class notes and problems, that will help you do well in his exams. Marks exam fairly well. Go take his class, and review his notes.
Excellent teacher, negative respondents are idiots. Hard course.
Good instructor.
Good instructor but very hard. Exams are based on problems done in class but with a twist so don't expect 100%. He should assign additional problems as a guideline.
Very good and helpful instructor. Funny at times. Easy tests and quizzes--if you just read the book and your notes and understand the concepts, you'll do fine. Pleasure to be in his class.
Joel is a great! He really cares about how his students are doing and will help them at any cost
He's funny, and a good prof. Very clear and understanding.
Very easy-going and friendly. Provides great notes from an otherwise complicated textbook conveying information-overload. Doesn't believe in homework so uses class time to do problems. Tests are straightforward and balanced, but can be a little tough since question wording is different from the textbook problems. Expect a "B", but that is good!
one of the most helpfull professors around for accounting, tests are relatively balanced and very genuine marking of midterms. thumbs up!!
ABSOLUTELY the worst, I repeat the worst teacher in ACCT. He speaks down to the students and makes them feel stupid! Makes an extremley easy class DIFFICULT. If you want your GPA to drop, then take this class. When the majority of a class is doing poorly, it should reflect on the techers teaching ability. Good Luck!
he's one of the best teachers in kwantlen. he helps students out, very friendly, good and clear about his lectures. tests are not that hard, if you fail it or get a low mark, dont blame him, cuz hes goood in teaching all the concepts covered in class.
this course is a fast paced and hard course and he is doing an okay job at teaching it. does some in class questions..first midterm is pretty easy..sec midterm was hard..but i would recommend him just because he's a nice guy and also his assignments are just for completion marks..even if u get all the answers wrong as long as u showed some effort.
good at explaining the lessons. no need to read the book. enjoyed his class. would take his class again if given the chance.
Great teacher. He reviews questions in class to make sure you understand the material and whatever is done in class is on the exams. Exams are easy if you go to class.
By far one of the most helpful teachers i have encountered thus far. Very approachable and does a lot of in class questions. Exams are a bit challenging and really test your knowledge but if you go to class and do the work there is no way you can do bad. Anyone saying this guy is tough has got to be joking. Your in college get used to it!
He is interested in having his students succeed. I think that he is kinda cute too.
He is a good teacher.
STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! If you are one of those people who ask questions when you don't get something, he will call you names. He is the most ruthless marker I've met in my entire life, too. Last semester I got an A in Accounting. With him, I got a B-. STAY AWAY!!!!
Great teacher! I had him for acct 1100 and I found him really helpful and easy to understand. His notes/examples in class really helped when I looked back on my work at home and when i was studying for exams! I would totally recommend him to anyone and I would definitely take him again in the future!
Joel is an excellent teacher! Explains everything well and is always willing to help you out if you don't understand. His tests are fair. If you go to class and do the homework there will be no surprises on the exams. I wish he taught higher level courses cause I would take him again!
bad teacher !! really bad ..well his notes are good..but he can surely kill your GPA..he doesn't care if you fail . i would never take him again..DON'T take him!!
Worst TEACHER EVER! i wish i never took him..hes sooo bad ..and doesn't care if you pass or not. His notes are good but hard exams..the final kills you..he just stares at you like you are dumb?? ..expect you to know the answers if you go and see him. its like WHY would i be standing here if i knew the answers. bad ..will drop your GPA. Don't!
His lecture notes are quite useless. Notes are all over the place, which then make them useless when studying. His choice of text for this class was even more useless. Horrible textbook! However, if you can somehow get through the text, his exams are difficult but "passable". His exam questions are usually a variation of text questions.
He is a good teacher, and makes all the key point super crystal clear. As long as you attent every class and really pay attention in the class, you wont even need much time to study at home. I got A+ for ACCT1110 with him, and that is the easiest A grade I ever got....
The people who complain about this guy are the ones who are too lazy to do their work or don't show up to class, or odn't pay attention in class. This is college people, not highshcool. Good teacher.
He is so bad..doesn't care if you pass ..his office hours are useless. he looks at you like you are "dumb"..Don't take him!! GPA will drop!!! his notes are good, assignments are easy but will just give you mark doesnt even look at them. bad teacher overall!
bad teacher!
He's a bad teacher overall. and it is not that if you attend all the classes you will pass. he doesn't even care if you pass or not. Office hours are useless. he won't even help you to upgrade your mark so you can pass.
BEST prof ever!!!I'll give 11 out of 10. Take him if you want to success.
aims at explaining the logic behind things. his lectures place heavy emphasis on the framework of accounting, rather than doing endless examples. probably the best teacher ive had at kwantlen.
He is useless, doesnt help you if u need it, doesnt completly explain everything expects you to know everything and thinks hes the master of the world
Joel is honestly another great prof at Kwantlen.I went to get help several times and he was very helpful!!.You will get a good grade if you try hard in his class.Wish he taught at higher level classes.Great Prof but 1st year students who are not willing to put in the effort should not take his class.
do lots of questions in class which is good but goes over the anwsers too fast! if u don't preview before class i don't think u'll understand..midterm is fair but some of the questions are not what he did in class...u have to be smart to anwer some of his exam question...not just read his notes and text..... not very hard prof but not east either
just done the final...and could u image, this is 50% final so if u fail,it's probably end of the world. the Final, 80% QS from last two chapters which is ridiculous!I wonder if that means the previous chapters aren't important,so we don't have to study! unfortunatly, i think, the last two chaps are the hardest. They worth 50% in ur overall mark...god
Great teacher. As long as you put in the work, this class is super easy.
Nice guy, but not a good instructor. His questions on quizzes or exams are not clear. I recommend U 2 take with another instructor who are helpful and clear.
he talks as if he has spit in his mouth hes alright but not the best. i'd give him a 5.5 out of 10. he needs to learn how to explain things better, he teaches things as if we already know it when in fact we are learning it for the first time.
Avoid this guy AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. When students get assignment, quizzes, or midterm marks, he never give feedback to students. He just want students to figure by themselves. If U need more help, take with another instructor!!!
Very poor teaching...don't ask him questions or u will be more confused. his exams are ok if you can study on your own. I had to get the assistance of another teacher for help to pass his class. He couldn't break down difficult concepts easier to understand. He might be good for first year accounting but he shouldn't be teaching higher level course
Currently taking joel and am half way thru my first sems from high school and hes awesome teach! After reading some reviews, they are biase bcuz all the bad ones come from the lazy people who get bad marks. I honestly just go over the notes before mts and read the material I dont get and I've got above avg on his mts and quizzes.
funny guy and has an even worse handwriting than mine. but somehow his notes are comprehensible. his jokes are funny. understood alot from his teaching, although the midterms are really hard. i'd take this guy again in the future.
Joel Rocks. His exams suck. They're tough, but they're questions STRAIGHT from wiley plus. He's extremely helpful and really wants students to do well.
My final though from this teacher. Is it worth to have a CA destination. Prefer no rich look teacher.
Has tons of in-class work that force you to do problems and apply what he has just taught. Midterms and final will be somewhat difficult but very similar to the problems you have done in class or wileyplus.
good teacher and hes funny!! you do a lot of practice questions to learn the stuff
I enjoy classes with Joel, he is good at explaining. He treats the students with respect. He teaches what he's going to test you on.
dont go on his looks. he might appear nice but his midterms, exams sucks. i went to his class but could never understand a single thing. His exam come from an alien book. nothing similar to the book we use in class (wiley plus version). this course is a very tough one and he makes it even more difficult. AVOID IF U WANT TO PASS THIS COURSE
He is a very good teacher. His exams are doable, and you know what to expect. Very generous in marking mid-terms and finals.
You take him if you want to learn. Joel is smart and no bs. His explanations are crystal clear. If you don't do well in his class, you're lazy. Don't blame the teacher for your shortcomings.
Joel ROCKS! So generous when it comes to marking exams. So professional when it comes to explaining course content. Lots of in-class exercises which really helps you absorb the material. plus he's fun. I would Definitely take him again!
I ended up dropping two of his classes this semester because he was really dry and boring in his teaching style. Also, I studied extremely hard and got 55% on the m/t his class avg. for m/t was 50%. He tests a few things taught in class, the rest you wonder????
If you want to learn, this is one of the teachers. His explanations are very good. He clarifies if you have questions. If you don't do well means you did not read textbook, do the homework (Wiley),review class examples and did not practice prior exams. He helps during his office hours. Do not blame teacher for your laziness.
One of the best teachers for accounting. This is the first time I ever got a B, this is not because he is very easy- but because he explains really good. I hope he teaches higher level acct someday too. God bless you man.
Joel teaches this class quite well. He provides notes and examples which makes it helpful for not reading the txtbook thoroughly. His midterms/final are fair as long as you study.
He knows the materials very well, and makes complex stuff simpler. He is very logical to explain questions. awesome teacher! Recommend.
Joel is a very fair prof. He can be funny and is very down to earth. He teaches then shows examples and responds to the class. His tests are predictable and he basically tells what will be on the test. Still gotta study tho because the material is quite hard!
Spring 2014. Joel is hands down the best ACCT prof at KPU. He explains everything clearly and everything you need to know in lectures, so you will know what to expect on exams. 0 BS in class. He goes through each step of the problem with you. You probably don't need to read the text book too. I will take his 4455 too.
Joel is a very fair prof. He can be funny at times. He teaches then shows examples and responds to the class. His midtermsexams are similar to class examples and assignments. He basically hints out during class what is going to be on the midtermexam. Still gotta study tho because the material is quite hard! (2 Midterm, 25,15%, Hw 10%, exam 50%).
Excellent Instructor. Takes time to write out notes in the first half of lecture. Does example problems over the second half of lecture (similar to exam questions). Its a must to take notes out of the textbook to touch on topics he didn't cover in class, but, for the most part, these are topics covered in course prerequisites anyways.
Joel is great professor. I liked how he would spend time at the beginning of every class and relate current events to course material. He teaches very thoroughly and gives good examples. Best professor i have had for accounting so far.
Joel is a great professor that explains concepts clearly. The material and questions he goes over in class are a clear indicator of what he is going to put on the midterms. Definitely recommend this prof. His level of accounting is high an engaging. A must-take
Joel is an energetic and enthusiastic instructor. It is very evident that he enjoys what he does. His instruction is clear although very paced and provides notes for every chapter he teaches. He also integrates a lot of practice problems into his instructions in order to help students grasp the material. Overall, He is awesome.
Gives lots of Homework and exams are much harder thatn his quizzes and hw. do not reccomend taking with him. I ended up getting a B but thats because i got an outside tutor to help me. i sent him emails throughout the semester and he didnt respond to a single one. I highly reccomend taking this class with someone else
He is a really nice person but I do not suggest taking him because he is all over the place with the way he teaches, it is very hard to follow, i got an A in my past accounting courses and am failing this..I suggest you avoid taking this class with him
This man is by far the best accounting instructor at KPU. He lectures in an clear and engaging manner. The material covered in 3410 itself is boring, but Joel makes it much more tolerable. His tests are tough, but they are directly based off of material covered during the lectures. Be sure to attend every class and study hard and you will pass.
Great guy, very nice and polite. Super knowledgeable however, I would not recommend him. He is all over the place with the material and goes VERY FAST in class. GIVES NO FEEDBACK ON MIDTERMS AND QUIZZES. His writing on the overhead is EXTREMELY messy and hard to read. Not a terrible prof, but If you can find a better one, avoid him.
Joel is a great professor. His lectures are simple to follow and on point. He is always willing to help students. Also, he actually make accounting bearable with his great teaching style. As for the course, tests are based on material covered in class. Lots of studying is required to pass as the content itself is hard.
His quizzes and tests are based on the questions you cover in class so there's no surprises. Just study his notes and complete the questions in the textbook and you should be perfectly fine.
Very respectful Prof.
2 midterms, 2 quizzes, 5 wiley plus, 1 final. Joel was a good prof. His lectures were decent. He gave handouts every class on the chapter. Work was spread out fairly throughout the semester. Midterms were based on the exercises and problems at the end of each chapter. A few tricky things but the class is hard to begin with. Class requires work.
Joel is one of the very good accounting professors at KPU. I took advanced accting with him, even though the class is difficult Joel made it better because he is a decent teacher and is very generous when it comes to marks. He exactly hints as to what will be in the exam which is very nice of him. Take it with him, work hard and you will do good.
Joel is well respected and a decent prof. He provides his students with a lot of examples which helps you learn, but is boring. Joel is a hard marker and his tests are based on the examples. I wouldnt take him again because he is just too boring.
Wiley assignments, 2 midterms and final like any other acct class. Joel was pretty clear. His lectures were dry and he skipped some material in each chapter lecture. Used in class examples for practice. Lots of material for this course. Midterms were easy but final was difficult. Practice material and you will be okay.
This class is easier than expected, or maybe he was that good. His explanations are clear and he gets straight to the important points. He makes use of the time really well. Quite funny too!
Joel is a great prof! I did redo this class b/c the previous prof I had was just horrible and I didn't learn anything with them but Joel made everything more clear. His exams are fair as they are similar to the practice questions so make sure you do those and understand them and you will do well. He is also very fair with his marking.
Joel is a very good prof, as long as you take notes and do the practice questions you will find his exams to be fair and similiar to those practice questions. Make sure to attend class to recieve the notes as they are not posted online, you need the notes to know what you need to study and what questions you should look at.
one of the worst teachers i've had. Very messy and disorganized. Abbreviates everything. Doesnt say what kind of questions on exams. Literally just gives you textbook and tells you to go read it
Joel is one of the best accounting prof at KPU. He gives out super notes which makes it easier to study during exam. His exams were hard but if you studied the concept and do the given exercise and problems, you will do just fine. He is also a fair marker and find that his lectures are not very heavy ( does not make you sleepy etc.)
Passive teaching style, beware if you require a clear and concise lecturer. Does not provide slides or makes use of moodle very much. Notes are illegible and printed notes are very difficult to understand as they are abbreviated and over-complicated. Marking is fair. Be prepared to learn almost entirely from the textbook otherwise you won't pass.
Solid prof for 3310. You need to study for this class or you will not pass. Intermediate 1 & 2 are probably going to be the hardest classes youll take
If you didnt take BUQU 1130 before, you would probably be in trouble. His writing is hard to read and he writes thing in super random order plus a lot of abbreviations. You have to focus 1000% to understand whats going on!
Hard course, be prepared to put in a lot of work. Exams are HARD, more difficult than practice questions done in class. Make sure you fully understand the concepts
If your not lazy an easy A. He will give you a very clear question list. Do that and that's it.
Joel does not use PowerPoints. He hands out notes at the beginning of every class. The notes include important concepts and questions that need to be completed from the textbook. He solves those questions in-class and provides the answers. If you review his notes and do the assigned questions before each exam, you're good to go! Would Recommend.
Joels the best, you will only see things done in class on exams, so theres no surprises, as long as you do all the practice questions. Theres 2 midterms (25% and 15%), final(50%), four hw assignments (10%).
The practice problems you complete in class are similar to what you will see on the midterm and final exams. As long as you go through those practice problems at home, and understand the material you will do well in his 3310 and 3410 classes. No surprises on his exams, as long as you study what he has assigned.
Word of advice, don't take a class with him. His writing is so messy it's pretty much scribbles, he's so unorganized the textbook is a better teacher than him. He is no help in class he goes from talking about accounting to uber in 0.02 seconds he's all over the place. By the end of it, I couldn't even remember what we learned that's how bad he is.
Tough class to do but easy to follow (only if he writes on the board properly. Not sure how it's working online rn). Homework was great practice for the exams. Enjoyed him as a lecturer because he was funny but also tied in concepts to real life applications. Make use of office hours if you need help with the assignments.
This prof just scribbles and talks about nonsense for 3 hours. If your taking him better get ready to learn from the textbook cause he is absolutely no help.
From what I heard from other accounting students, this course is hard and it does not matter who your professor is. I almost failed. :(
The class is very hard. However, Joel is a solid choice.
Though I did fairly well in his class, I had to work for it. He over abbreviates thingsthings that Google doesn't even know what they mean. It's pretty easy to fall behind during lectures, as he goes over examples super quick. Asking him questions helps stop him in his tracks and bring him back to the reality of being an instructor.
Ive had Joel for a few classes at my time at KPU. Id recommend him over other professors. The material is hard. Dont blame the professor because you did not study. Tests were related to homework and in class problems. Caring person and seems to genuinely care about your success.
As for me with a B grade, I read the book, but it was almost in like a hurry, I practiced WileyPlus video solutions ( not the excel ones), practiced the problems and excercises he taught in class and watched EdSpira Videos. An A grade requires more in depth reading and understanding, but, as long as you know the stuf he teaught in class, you r fine
Joel is one of the best profs for 3410 and 4455. Focus on the in-class problems and pay attention to what he says and you will be fine. The material for advanced accounting is hard so do not blame the professor.
Finishing up the last few semesters of my degree and up to this point, he is surely one of the best profs at KPU. Gives lectures like conversations, breaks down complex concepts, and asks questions continuously to keep you engaged. If you mess up, its because of your effort.
Joel provides clear outlines for midterms and finals. His exams are similar to the activities in class. He responds to e-mails, and encourages students to communicate with him even after lectures.
2 yrs at KPU, and Joel is my favrite. He is such a nice man. Gives lots of part mrks. Come to his clas, listen to his lectres, and do the hmwrk, trust me it's not hard to get an A. No srprise questns in emxs He dsnt point out at studnts to asnwr anythng which I hate about other profesrs. Gives you extnsns for assigmnts if you provide a valid reason
You must study and understand what he taught in class to pass his course. He is one of the best professors at KPU.
This is not an easy class. But if you study whatever he teaches in class and practice the questions. You can pass his class. He gives clear instructions for midterms and the final exam. Just keep practicing and you will be fine. His Wileyplus assignments are also very helpful for exams. His final is a bit hard but midterms are not bad.
The class is challenging, but with the right study approach, it can be manageable. I found the textbook and unstuckstudy to be helpful resources alongside attending lectures. The professor has areas to improve, but is overall engaged.
This class is tough. As long as you attend class and do his problems you should be fine in this class. Tips: pre read before class, ask for help if needed, practice practice practice and you will get a good mark. He is decent marker and explains the material well.
Good prof for accounting. Make sure your work hard and you will be fine.
Best teacher for intermediate accounting
You need to practice the class problems and WileyPlus assignments to succeed in this class. He provides a clear outline for midterms and the final.
best prof for this accounting
Come to class and do his practice problems and review his notes and you should be fine for the test
You need this prof for intermediate accounting
Joel is one of the best accounting professors at KPU. He knows his subject, he comes prepared to lectures, he is organized, he takes time to do exercises with us during class. His exams are based on what was discussed in class. No surprises, just straight to the point, and an excellent teacher. Would definitely recommend.
This course itself is very difficult, but the professor is extremely nice. He truly cares about his students. Even though I was under a lot of academic pressure at that time, the professor still cared about me. He is the best professor at kpu
One of the most amazing professors at KPU, I have had him for both intermediate accounting classes and now had him for advanced accounting. He was available for help and very caring. He always only tested what was taught in class, with no curve balls thrown at us.
Joel is one of the nicest professors I have had in my accounting courses. He explains the material very clearly during lectures and spends a lot of time working through exercises with us in class to help ensure we fully understand each chapter.
