Sometimes talks a little too much about himself and Michigan
Not bad

Really nice easygoing guy. Has plenty of stories to tell.

nice guy, very helpful! Loves England
loves movies, extremely funny, sometimes disorganized, animated, kool
he's a great professor and very humorous. easy class and not to mention fun.
He's experienced and knows a lot in his field. And the class is very easy and relaxed. However, his teaching is a bit disorganized to learn something. Also, his voice is too small to catch what he's talking about. But, the movie selection was great.
Likes to spend the first 20 min of the class talking about something completely unrelated. Gives an impression of being a friendly guy, unless you actually need his help. Perfect professor for slacker freshmen. Terrible professor for someone who actually wants to learn.
He does not know anything, I knew more then he did with certain films. If only you knew how unintelligent he was.
one of the best classes i have ever taken. extremely involved, loves film, loves his class.
Without doubt, one of the best profs at hunter.
He is a good teacher and a fun class. He talks pretty low and fast when he actually dictates notes in class. He knows his film stuff though. Movie selections were okay but could be better. If you study the stuff he tells you, you will do good. Overall a good, laidback teacher.
i love him

He is great, a lil bit out there, but man i loved his class
I had the Asian part of this class and i gotta say, he introiduce me to alot of the great directors and movies of all times. than Zuk
very easy class, He gives Quizzes after every movie. His quizzes are easy only 10 questions. He has a 2 midterms and a Final. He curves the grades if the class is doing bad. He is one of the BEST professors at Hunter. I love this guy and I plan to take another class with him, if he has any !!!
He is a funny little man. Really easy if u watch the movies. When take notes u have to write very quickly cuz he talks fast and sometimes he says things n ur just like huh?
Great guy, had me crying in class with some of the whacky things he said. Tends to go off on tangents so you lose time watching the films. Very passionate about the subject but remembers that it is an intro class so doesn't expect way too much. Quizzes - easy, paper was easy. Would take another class with him.
He's so very sweet...He is a good Professor. He is very funny and makes each student feel like he/she is special. The class was fun. I loved him even more because he was naturally funny even when he didn't try to be. He dresses in that cool way with leather jackets and in the summer, sandals. The last day of class was very sentimental because w
He is so very sweet...He is a good Professor. He is very funny and makes each student feel like he/she is special. The class was fun. The last day of class was very sentimental because we were all going to miss him. This is an introduction class, so the material is not heavy.
all we ever did was watch films and his test questions were ridiculous like 'what color were the protagonist's socks?'
Great prof. Amazing film selection. Knows you're taking the class out of the love for film. Also had him for 101. You had to be a friggin idiot to not do well in his classes. Would take any class he taught.
Good professor. Quizzes and tests are a little difficult since he asks specifics of films about characters and objects in the film than themes. He keeps the class interesting though and is very helpful. Is also head of film department. But all in all I liked taking this class and I would like to take a class with him again.
bad, horrible worst. test had information that was not covered in class. rather take a theater class. much BETTER
Joel Zuker is a very nice, down to earth guy. His lectures are interesting and very relaxing. I would take a class with him again!

i failed all the quizzes except one but i got an A because i did great on the final paper! so my advice is just focus on the final paper and show up to class. effort counts :)
Hes the cutest little man ever! A good film selection. He's very eager, and sometimes a bit hard to understand, but it's definetly an enjoyable class. It was one I looked foward to every week.
extreme close up, banana, heroin needle, monkey, jamba juice, nebulous clouds. that's kinda how his mind works. but he's awesome and his film selections are very cool. just don't expect to know what in the world he's talking about. or what planet he's actually from for that matter.
This dude was fine as a professor but as the film advisor he was never on time for appointments and gave me false information.
This Guy is Hilarious! I loved him. He loves what he does but it may seem likes he’s a little out of it sometimes. All we did was watch movies and he would quiz us often. His Quizzes and Tests are ridiculous. Asks specific questions:What was the color of the main characters socks.other than tha.it’s a great class and he’s a great professor!

i love zuker! he's totally nuts. which makes the class a lot more fun. he's really passionate about what he teaches. in 101 he would keep commenting on the film while we were watching it that he had to step outside to refrain himself. why does he have a 2 for hotness? he's so cute.
HE IS SUCH A CUTE MAN! His quizzes (every week) are tricky, but its not like he grades them or counts them. Theres a Midterm, paper, and a final. If he likes you, you are set, just get on his good side. He is fun and random really great class.
He is nice but i don't understand the word he says
he is the man
My favorite teacher of all time. A brilliant man with a brilliant charisma for teaching. He's only "Unclear" because he doesn't force feed specific facts. Instead, he shows/offers multiple interpretations, often second guessing even himself. He teaches how to analyze/appreciate film. If you want a zillion force-fed "facts", take a Margulies class.
one of the best profs i have ever had. interesting, funny and easy going. can't wait to take more classes.
He is the best! He really knows his stuff and brings his passion for film into every class which naturally makes you more interested in whatever he is teaching that day. He is highly recommended. You will never be bored.
This guy is awesome! I reccomend trying to get one of his classes. Just make sure you get on his good side and he'll take care of you. Good to be friends with if you're in the film department, he is the head.
Zucker is very helpful. He not only taught me useful information but his class was enjoyable.
good teacher but sometimes goes off on tangents. A fun class but he gives hard tests.
Zuker's film class was entertaining. The films that were screened were generally enjoyable. He is very fun and comedic. However, he is unclear on what to study for on tests and asks VERY detailed questions. You can thoroughly comprehend the films and still get stuck with a B or C on the midterm and final. I don't like playing roulette with my grade
PROFESSOR ZUKER IS BRILLIANT...ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD. He is passionate about film and loves teaching, and it shows. I can't wait to take all of his classes. he rocks!!
Overall he was pretty cool and nice. However, he is a bit eccentric, has his favorites, and some of the quizze after the movies are a bit specific. However, the movies are pretty good and if you watch them, you should be fine.
Relaxed professor but is unclear in what he expects of assignments/due dates.Quizzes are based on movies. The quizzes are sometimes too specific but simple nonetheless--they're fair. One final paper.TA does most of the grading.Attend classes. Do what is expected of you! Overall, he was okay but the workload was not much at all.
Great professor, class is not hard at all. He's quite the looker for an older man.
He gives quizzes after movies and sometimes quizzes can be very specific (what color shirt character had). He's fairly easy, don't need a textbook, just pay attention. Some questions on midterm/final were not expected b/c he wasn't 100% clear on material, eventho he gives a studyguide for tests. I got an A and didnt do much work. I recommend him.
He is an excellent professor, he really knows his material. The quizzes are alright as long as you pay attention to the movies. Make sure you write down every detail that might appear important because most likely he will ask it. I highly recommend him.
As someone said before it's like playing roulette with your grade. He may seem easy during the semester all he does is show movies and gives easy quizzes with a final paper but he doesn't teach all semester nor does explain what he expects so I averaged 98 on my quizzes and got a B- in class, go figure!
I failed almost every quiz and got an 88 on the midterm, but still received an A in the class. My advice is to make sure the TA knows your name, she is the one in control of final grades. If there is no TA then make sure Professor Zuker knows you. Also, focus on the final exam and paper.
a very easy A if you follow these guidelines: pay attention to all his movies for quizzes, sparknote the readings(he does ask quote questions though), always remember everything on his midterm study sheets, and the exact first and last shot of all shown movies. he is very specific, but does not test you on a whole lot of definitions and symbolism
I have a secret to share. His quizzes never count. He only does them to make sure you've seen the films and give you something to study from on the real tests. They are never factored into the final grade. So now you know.
Easy class. He's not the most passionate about teaching, but favors people who know about films and directors. Quizzes are specific, but easy if you pay attention to the films. You watch a movie one day, and take a quiz the other day. Cake easy. Unless you want to hear Zukers life stories, i recommend another professor if you actually want to learn
Although he's a bit confusing at times he's a great teacher. He's great because he constantly suggesting new things and showing you new things about the subject. Make sure to constantly pay attention to detail because his quizes are a bit hard and detailed. Over all he's a great teacher even though he gets a little off track at times.
Don't let the weekly quizes frighten you, just watch the films closely and some of the grades end up being dropped. Zuker goes off topic a lot, usually about other films. Eccentric guy, pretty nice. He will work to your advantage if film is your major, so get familiar with him.
Great teacher...quirky, yet extremely knowledgeable. Study for tests, and you'll do fine. Great experience.
The man is an enigma. Interesting, but sometimes I honestly have no idea where he's coming from.
One of the best professors at Hunter College. Passionate about film and completely hilarious. Love Zuker and would recommend him to anyone.
Don't understand any of the negative comments on here. He's the sweetest old man in the world and loves movies. He's also ridiculously funny. Easy class and so much fun. Definitely take his class.
FILM 101. Easy class. Just pay attention to the movies. Weekly quizzes are easy. Fair grading system. JUST PAY ATTENTION TO THE MOVIES. You'd have to be really dumb to not do well in his class.
Very chill and funny teacher. Watch weekly movies and have quiz on it. His quiz are very detailed so pay attention to that. Makes class very fun, tells about his own stories. Really enjoyed all the movies watch. Really Recommend!
Very easy and fun class. Watching movies and taking quiz on it. No need to read any books, just google the summary. Zuker is da best
He's one of the best profs I have had here. Amazing lectures, movies I would otherwise not have seen, and I learned so much. Love him!!
Highly Recommend! He's super-cool and I loved his class.
Great funny professor. He comes of as a little bit wacky but its just Zuker being Zuker. Nice guy fun class take him.
Gave quizzes on movies and wants you to be precise on the scene details...yet right answers were not always. Term paper on the the elements of film, which he skimmed over but never discussed was graded by his TA's, who were more interested in meeting guys than attention to content.
Such a fun, interesting class. He's a talker but I don't mind cause his stories are funny. Pay attention to all the little details in the movies. Your essay/final gets a lot of attention from him cause he feels its more personal. Love him! Also, sit in the front so he gets to know you.
He is a character. He is funny. He is real. He jokes and he's just mad cool. You're basically chillin in class.
Nice and funny guy. Definitely a bit quirky, which isn't a bad thing. Very detail-oriented. Would recommend.
Pretty chill teacher. Likes to poke fun at his T.A. The curriculum is pretty light as long as you pay attention to the movies. He tells you what's on tests and quizzes. There is some book reading, but as long as you are steady in your work, easy A
Mr. Zuker is great! I thought he was fun and kind of kooky in a good way. I had to take Intro to Cinema and wasn't exactly looking forward to it but he made it very easy. I didn't buy the course packet and passed with a B. His tests are not hard as long as you pay attention to the films.
Xoxoxxo he is the best .
Easy A. Fun class. Very laid back.
Awesome! Incredible! Handsome! Charming! Delightful! I will marry him if he wouldn't be married already! The most helpful and understanding professor I ever had in my entire life! Never a dull moment with him! You learn so much in his classes. Did I say fun?
THE BEST! chair of the department, and totally in love with film. he is so funny and laid back. i enjoyed going to class. 2 midterms, 3-5 final paper, and a quiz each class on the film you watched. EASY A.
Definitely like Prof. Zuker. Plan to take him again. I think he is a little unconventional but that adds to the interest of the class. A quiz every week on the films but pretty clear cut. Just make sure you do not miss anything. Its the little things in the films you might miss he ask about. Extremely fair and definitely someone to take.
He's amazing, take him. Easy A
Great Professor. He's interesting and makes class enjoyable. I looked forward to going to his class.
Great professor. Funny, quirky and easy to like. You need to show up, participate and pay attention during films. Pop quizzes can ask obscure, random questions , so pay attention to the details (once you're in the class you'll know what I mean). All around fun course and if you're into cinema, you'll learn a lot.
He was funny. I liked his humor. However, the quizzes were very challenging for me. He's very detail-oriented.
Amazing Professor. Perfect summer class. 3 novels adapted into movies. 2 Midterms. 1 three pg Final Paper. Super Funny. As long as you watch the movies in class, you'll do fine on the quizzes. Hand feeds you the questions on the midterms. He's lovable person.
Had him for the summer session. No attendance but I went everyday. Love this guy. Watch the movies and read the books and you're good. He tries to have you pass his class. There are tough questions on the quizzes. He gives out review sheets for midterms and final. Would def. take again.
i took him many yrs ago i was basically flunking everything so i changed my major to English writing and minored in film i didn't major in film for i flunked basic camera work so i took film writing and his classes. i wrote screenplays but haven't sold it. It's a vacation class, but with a lot of reading and movies. i took every class he taught.
He's a good professor for an intro course and all you do is watch movies and clips and are tested accordingly. He has very basic questions on his weekly quizzes on the prior weeks movie. Overall it's an easy class as long as you watch the film and know the basics. (detailed basics). There is no other work in the class. Gives reviews for major exams
Professor Zuker is the funniest professor I ever had. He goes off on wild tangents and tells personal stories, all of which are hilarious and refreshingly honest. He seems kind of zany at first, but make no mistake: he knows everything there is to know about film. Doesn't take attendance but his personality makes you want to come to every class.
He is definitely weird, funny and very awkward Quiz are not easy but you get what he's looking for after the first 1 don't have to attend the lectures you can watch the movies on your own can't pass the quizzes if you don't watch the movies Easy grader Quizzes, Midterm, Final, One long final paper comparing two films you saw in Class No text
He's like having your quirky grandfather as your professor, and I mean that in a good way. Great professor, he's friendly, funny, and is very charismatic about films. The work he gives out isn't hard at all, even the weekly quizzes as long as you watch the movies. His class was a lot of fun and I recommend him.
Like a Woody Allen type. For the quizzes, memorize all of the titles and corresponding authors. THat's where he gets you. Fun class and you will learn.
Fun, very quirky and knowledgeable. Get ready to be quizzed, A LOT. Memorize the small things like titles and authors. Easy going and chill but don't take that for granted. Do the work and study for the exams. Attendance isn't mandatory but make sure you show up.
He gives quizzes for every film we watch. Quizzes are tricky because they require you to know the smallest details that seem insignificant. He's cool and funny, but talks a lot!
The most inspirational professor of film major.
This prof is really nice and funny. However, he goes off topic a lot!! He can't stay focused and it does waste class time. Still, he is nice and it is an easy class if you memorize the study guide. There are quizzes where you memorize film characters/dialogue, which is a pain, but still easy in the end.
Rambles and goes off topic and makes his assistant do all the actual work. Quizzes are of insignificant details so you have to watch the movies multiple times on your own, just makes sure you know what Minor Character #47 said at the middle of 1st act. I'm an honors student majoring in film but the only class I had to take C/NC to not ruin my GPA.
Hes a funny professor. That being said, he wastes an INSANE amount of time completely going off topic. The quizzes he gives are ridiculous, they focus on insignificant details in the text that dont matter. There is no real lecture, youre left having to teach yourself and theres no review for tests. You ARE on your own if you take his class.
Prof. Zuker definitely gets sooo distracted during class. And can go off on different topics while teaching. But when he focuses again, you can tell he has a lot of knowledge abt film. Easy class and he is very nice outside of class. He is the chairperson of the film dept. so you'll probably have to take him eventually.
This class is an easy A with that being said, it gets really boring when he goes off into tangents. You just have to smile and nod and occasionally say something when he picks on you. It's really all about the movies and the very tricky quizzes with small details. He'll assign a paper which isn't too bad as instructions are clear/straightforward.
You watch movie and listen to jokes. I wish everything was that easy.
He is a hilarious amazing teacher who is so passionate about Film and that passion translates to the class. He gives weekly quizzes on the films watched but theyre very easy. His exams are straight from the review sheets he gives. This class always brightened up my day.
Professor Zuker is amazing! Hes funny, kind, and you will learn a lot without feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Not only are his classes enjoyable, but so are his assignments that you do outside of class. Hes a gem and I genuinely adore him.
A little bit unclear on what he wants from students, but really nothing too bad. His classes are entertaining and he's not strict at all on attendance- 100% would take again without a second thought.
he's funny and the course is easy. take him
To this day Im still not sure whether hes playing a character in his everyday life- but hes hilarious. Extremely knowledgeable about film, makes jokes, easy grader, easy class.
I couldn't be bothered rating my professors lol but this dude was too epic not to spend a few minutes to increase his reputation. Zucker is like the 60s stoner, rock n' roll film buff friend I've never had but lo' and behold. Very chill and charismatic fella, tells amusing anecdotes often. Take him, you won't regret it !!!!!!
Not gonna lie, I wish he was my grandpa. He's silly and brilliant and his passion shines through. I'm gonna miss him a lot.
Zuker is super chill and each lecture consisted of a couple of clips and notes shown to us. You really don't have to pay attention. Your discussion professor grades your work, not Zuker unless you have him for discussion too. I stopped attending the grand lectures, but you should continue attending your discussions since it's graded.
Prof Zuker is probably the most considerate professor at Hunter College. Even remotely, he made sure that his students were well at the start of class. Had him as the main lecturer and discussion instructor both well-taught. Exams are really based on each movie you watch + definitions he provides. He and his TA, Dennis, are truly gems.
Looking for an easy A class then this is the one! I had him for both the main lecture and discussion group and can 10/10 recommend.
Professor Zucker, is very passionate about what he does. He goes into depth about the scenes shown in the zoom! The lecture is long and you don't really need to be there. He doesn't grade you but your discussion professor requires that you go just cause. Overall you just stay there and listen.
Great class if you only want to study crime movies! Literally every movie was a crime/mystery movie in some way & all but one movie was directed by a white man. He is really kind, but gets distracted a lot. You'll spend the class listening to things that have nothing to do with the movie. You also have to pay to watch many of the movies in class.
I had him as my lecture professor and he's passionate about film. His lectures are easy to follow and is overall stress free and easy. If you can, definitely take him.
Joel is a cool old guy, he is funny most of the time and also goes off on tangents, but it is not really a bad thing since classes are chill. EASY A. take him if you can!
Great person who always makes everyone laugh
No assignments from him. Ur assignments come from ur discussion professor. He only does the lecture. His lectures were fun and he engaged with us. He wasn't reading off any slides or PowerPoint. He is one of the best professors. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!! Trust me because u might never find such an easy class again at Hunter.
had him both for lecture & discussion. 40% midterm and final, all online and multiple-choice. 15% quizzes in person and 5% attendance. I would recommend taking notes on the movies because some of the questions on the quizzes are very specific and he doesn't respond to emails. other than that he's great, he's very silly and chill
Such a sweet and silly professor. For an introductory course, the class was very chill. However I do have to admit that his quizzes were very stressful because some of the questions would ask about small details like "what color was the shirt of the character" in the film. Other than that, he taught really well and loved his passion about NYC.
Professor Zuker is great to talk to and he always has funny stories to tell. His lectures are engaging and you can really tell that he loves what he does!
Zuker's FILM101 is a chill, easy A class. His lectures are engaging, and you can cruise through with minimal effort. unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the provided resources. Definitely take this if you want an easygoing class.
Loved this class! All you have to do is watch the films assigned. He does have pop quizzes but he will tell you when. He is funny and caring. My favorite thing about him is that he always tries to get everyone to laugh. I highly recommend him!
Rest in Piece Professor Zucker. He was hilarious bc he couldn't function his zoom on his own, but so very passionate and friendly to the students. I won't forget the one class I had him last semester.
RIP Joel Zuker! He was an amazing professor who always crack jokes and gave students cookies.
I took his class in 2021, and from time to time I would randomly search his name on Google only to find out that he had passed away. That's how much his class has stayed with me. Rest in peace, Professor.
RIP Professor Zuker. I took his class and it was super interesting and enjoyable. He was very passionate about the film and explained every detail of the film and what it meant. Made the class stress free and was great to talk to about things. You wouldn't be able to find a second professor like him at Hunter or anywhere else. Truly sad he's gone.
