Wicked prof.. clear, fun, fair and very down to Earth!
a little nutty and over dramatic, but knowledgable and through.

Bring a Pillow, it doesn't hurt as much when you pass out

I would rather be dead
don't even think about second guessing her, very hard marker but helpful
Wonderfully Illustrative. Adds a touch of spice to the woefully drab.
Boring as hell, can't understand why anyone would want to teach it, BRING PILLOW

makes an elective surprisingly hard, go to classes & participate
Great attitude, makes lectures interesting

What an excellent prof! Very kind and very engaging lecturer.
very good prof, very excited about history and keeps everyone awake. Hot too!
lil cracked out on coffee but extremely enthus. , intell., experien. & admirabl
great lecturer; she keeps things interesting. I learned tons.

Great enthu., very clear, Unlike other profs. she's a keeper!
Tough marker, ok classes, HST119 was boring with the old movies though.
Enthusiastic, very intelligent, great lectures, super nice
Very good teacer. Makes the subject matter very interesting.
too much reading for a liberal study. Exam should be one essay not too. Interestting content. Needs to be a little more organized in lecture style

Forgot the name of the course, but it was PRETTY DAMN hard. A little cracked. Nope, a lot cracked. Was not going to take any other history courses, but accidentally took Dr. Kislenko's! He's the best!
Great prof

a brilliant and hot professor
Wow -- what a course!
Great teaching style, really cares about student success and is available. Will take you to academic heights never experienced! Enjoyable course but extremely difficult.
funny, wacky, smart woman. Loved her class, her teching style is all over the place but she keeps u awake.
Loves her subject!
great teacher... hot bod
If you like feeling flustered and confused this is the teacher for you. Did well in the class, but I am still not sure how!
watch a lot of films in this course as long as you pay attention and keep up with the work load you will do fine...
absolutely fantastic. you will learn more in this course than any other!! best post secondary experience by far.
fun prof, but incredibly hard marker
extremely interesting and very helpful
a fun and interesting class....but if you're not good at writting essays u should get out of her class!!! VERY HARD MARKER!!!!! i don't like the way she embarasses students when they ask questions either, she's not very encouraging
wacky she is, as well as a hard marker..whoa. enthusiastic and lectures like a real historian, but ive never really taken a history course before. but definitely not for those who dont like history or those who think its a bird course, its not
She's not a good teacher. Hard marker, and an aura of unapproachability. Drop her class, you won't learn anything useful either, its a waste of time and money. . . . and I actually liked history before I took her class . . .
Well I don't know what class people took with her and actually managed to succeed/enjoy, but don't take HST119 with her. No matter how hard you work, no one manages over a B-. . . . as Joey would say . . . "*evil laugh* ya know"

She is very enthusiastic and provokes thought/discussion from students. I think she is a really good prof
Even if she gives u the quotes to the midterm, it's marked unbelievable hard and the final as well. Make sure u know grammar and spelling because it makes most of your essays and exams. Her handwritting is just awful so u cant read what she has on an overhead. movies and reading BORING
This class is an easy A if u show up and take down every single note possible. Movies are boring but relate to the matterial. Not a lot of reading, maybe 150-200 pages for the whole semester. WARNING: DON'T TAKE IF LACKING ESSAY WRITING SKILLS.
lectures are kind of boring, she is easy on the eyes, do that makes up for it

SHE IS HOT!! i love her, awesome awesome awesome!
I LOVE THIS PROF!!! She is so oldschool! No online, no powerpoint, just an overhead and markers. She is extremely professional and does her job well. She is really into the course, and really engages in discussion with the students. I got a D+ though becuase the exams aren't easy if you have not read the course kit.
Awesome prof but she marks hard (Although I got a 70 on the essay....but I only got like a 50 after late marks). So yeah I don't know how the hell I managed that. Ah well. You're screwed if you don't do the readings.
Another one of those TOP best teachers ... i loved the class ... and you are an interesting person with a great knowlege of the subject area ... just a few to many african films tho ...
tough marker on essay... exam expect you know the whole book inside out(more then 500 pages)
Nice woman with a great passion for history. I enjoyed her class.
She is graiding based on the assumption that B is A. Thus, her graiding is unfair. Very old fashion, not using computer at all. If you not attending class for any reason, it is impossible to get lecture materials. Overall class is a waiste of time.
Hmm. I thought she graded on the assumption that her students could spell... I thought it was a good course even though lots of new information and ideas.
SHE CANNOT TEACH! SHE IS POSSIBLY THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE SCHOOLING CAREER. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TEACHER WITH NO CLUE OF WHAT SHES DOING!!!!!!
really, really oldschool uses an old overheads for notes and most of the time her writings are hard to read, course text have long readings and seems unrelated to lectured material. I do appreciate her for her deep knowledge and intrest in the history of Africa
Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable professor. Embraces students when they have questions, can always answer them very well. A good, clear, public speaker. However, be ready to take a lot of your own notes. She's old school and uses overheads - no powerpoints! Still, it was a very interesting and fun class. I really enjoyed it and have recommended it
Gave her a C grade because its impossible to get anything higher with her. TA's mark most of work, and it is impossible to get lecture notes if you miss a class. Very enthusiastic and enjoys what she talks about, but for those of you without a background in history, DO NOT take the course
Movies are pretty good, if a bit dense. I didn't go to her lectures but you have to go to the seminars and have the readings done. From what I saw of her, she was a near riveting prof though and very nice and enthusiastic and helpful. (And not a particularly hard marker...i got my highest essay mark for a history class ever with her).
Professor Power is POWER. lol she is so enthusiastic, she knows what she's talking about, she's passionate, and she's knowledgeable. I didn't have the best marks in her class so if you're looking for good marks, don't take it. but if you want to receive real education, take it WITHOUT doubt.
Shes a great teacher, being a chem student doing this as a liberal was refreshing, not a course that I would suggest if you are not good at essays. Take advantage of her kindness as she enjoys helping you, and youll get a great grade!
PREPARE AND PAY ATTENTION IN LECTURES AND TUTORIALS. It is extremely important to do the readings, and pay attention in class, especially during tutorials, because she will call on you, and ask questions on the readings. The worst thing that can happen is when you don't know what to say, and the whole class is staring at you.
Joey Power is nice and friendly. She is a very hard marker. There were many readings to read for this course but I learned a lot. Also she makes sure that everyone participates in the discussions. The historical films were interesting to watch!
Her class is incredibly difficult, but it's really engaging and fun anyway. This is not an easy A class, but you will learn something.
The movies are really boring and she can't figure out equipment. She's an unfair marker. She likes to think she is hilarious but is completely ignorant about things that may be going on in a student's lives. The midterm and exams do not have clear instructions.
Joan (or Joey, as she prefers) is a very dry teacher who teaches an exceptionally dry course. The films that she has chosen to show for a history in film class are too strange and alienating to be dissected for her long essay and even longer exam. Would not recommend this course.
Awesome!
Chooses old movies but you can tell she's passionate about the material. Extremely kind. She knows what she's talking about and everything is extremely straight forward. only 1 paper, you'll do well in tutorials just by showing up. Make sure you read tutorial material or you'll make a fool out of yourself during tutorials with her.
Pretty boring class, watched very bad films and I did none of the readings and still managed to pass.
Fantastic class, fantastic professor. She demands engagement so she will volunteer people and try to coax quiet students to speak, so beware of that. Highly recommend.
Super friendly and funny. Talks a lot and doesn't put lecture slides up online, so if you miss a lot of classes you're basically screwed. But, she's super willing to talk in office hours and will let you switch tutorials. She really knows what she's talking about and is very accommodating. Would totally take again.
One of the sweetest and most caring professors. She gives a ton to read but she's really accomidating and is very passionate about her students. Solid prof, I would definitly take her again
Sweetest prof alive, taught through modules online that you could go back and visit anytime. Readings are heavy but tutorials are engaging, upbeat, fun, and I actually felt like I was learning more through them. Fair grader and specific about what she wants, so just follow instructions. Cares about her students success and wants to help.
the class is relatively entertaining, but her lectures were very long and if you miss a lecture... good luck. it's like being assaulted with information. she's a nice person and very funny but she's not a good prof. avoid taking the class with this prof.
i took Dr. Powers class and found it really interesting. the problem is that there are tutorials every other week which a huge part of your grade is on, she doesn't give study guides for the midterm or exam, she is not accommodating AT ALL, even if you have accommodations, it's hard to reach her,
Engaging & passionate lectures but poorly formatted, no slides and nothing posted on D2L. If you miss a class, you're screwed. High expectations that are hard to meet due to the vague content + formatting of the class. Rarely gives marks over 75% and never over 85%. Somewhat accommodating but very intimidating. Stay on top of this class.
Lectures are overly vague and overall messy. She doesn't use powerpoints but instead uses hand-written notes that she projects onto a screen. She seems very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches but presents it in a way that is difficult to understand. In seminars, she will pick on you if you do not participate so be aware of that.
Joey is awesome! Even though I wasn't completely invested in the subject matter at first, Joey put a lot of passion into her teaching, making me actually enjoy the content. Lovely person.
Dr. Power's lectures were funny and interesting; it was clear that she was passionate and engaged in the material. However, she was extremely unorganized in terms of slide presentations, assignment expectations, and study guides. She was great with providing visual aid, but if you're someone who needs text to learn, her lectures had next to none.
The course material isn't that exciting, but Dr. Power was so engaging and always did her best to make an early morning more fun. Tutorials were pretty informal compared to other classes, but she will call on you so watch out.
You will learn a lot. Power is fair and gives many comments on written work.
