a fun and interesting class....but if you're not good at writting essays u should get out of her class!!! VERY HARD MARKER!!!!! i don't like the way she embarasses students when they ask questions either, she's not very encouraging

She's not a good teacher. Hard marker, and an aura of unapproachability. Drop her class, you won't learn anything useful either, its a waste of time and money. . . . and I actually liked history before I took her class . . .

Even if she gives u the quotes to the midterm, it's marked unbelievable hard and the final as well. Make sure u know grammar and spelling because it makes most of your essays and exams. Her handwritting is just awful so u cant read what she has on an overhead. movies and reading BORING

This class is an easy A if u show up and take down every single note possible. Movies are boring but relate to the matterial. Not a lot of reading, maybe 150-200 pages for the whole semester. WARNING: DON'T TAKE IF LACKING ESSAY WRITING SKILLS.

I LOVE THIS PROF!!! She is so oldschool! No online, no powerpoint, just an overhead and markers. She is extremely professional and does her job well. She is really into the course, and really engages in discussion with the students. I got a D+ though becuase the exams aren't easy if you have not read the course kit.

Awesome prof but she marks hard (Although I got a 70 on the essay....but I only got like a 50 after late marks). So yeah I don't know how the hell I managed that. Ah well. You're screwed if you don't do the readings.

She is graiding based on the assumption that B is A. Thus, her graiding is unfair. Very old fashion, not using computer at all. If you not attending class for any reason, it is impossible to get lecture materials. Overall class is a waiste of time.

really, really oldschool uses an old overheads for notes and most of the time her writings are hard to read, course text have long readings and seems unrelated to lectured material. I do appreciate her for her deep knowledge and intrest in the history of Africa

Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable professor. Embraces students when they have questions, can always answer them very well. A good, clear, public speaker. However, be ready to take a lot of your own notes. She's old school and uses overheads - no powerpoints! Still, it was a very interesting and fun class. I really enjoyed it and have recommended it

Gave her a C grade because its impossible to get anything higher with her. TA's mark most of work, and it is impossible to get lecture notes if you miss a class. Very enthusiastic and enjoys what she talks about, but for those of you without a background in history, DO NOT take the course

Movies are pretty good, if a bit dense. I didn't go to her lectures but you have to go to the seminars and have the readings done. From what I saw of her, she was a near riveting prof though and very nice and enthusiastic and helpful. (And not a particularly hard marker...i got my highest essay mark for a history class ever with her).

Professor Power is POWER. lol she is so enthusiastic, she knows what she's talking about, she's passionate, and she's knowledgeable. I didn't have the best marks in her class so if you're looking for good marks, don't take it. but if you want to receive real education, take it WITHOUT doubt.

Shes a great teacher, being a chem student doing this as a liberal was refreshing, not a course that I would suggest if you are not good at essays. Take advantage of her kindness as she enjoys helping you, and youll get a great grade!

PREPARE AND PAY ATTENTION IN LECTURES AND TUTORIALS. It is extremely important to do the readings, and pay attention in class, especially during tutorials, because she will call on you, and ask questions on the readings. The worst thing that can happen is when you don't know what to say, and the whole class is staring at you.

Joey Power is nice and friendly. She is a very hard marker. There were many readings to read for this course but I learned a lot. Also she makes sure that everyone participates in the discussions. The historical films were interesting to watch!

The movies are really boring and she can't figure out equipment. She's an unfair marker. She likes to think she is hilarious but is completely ignorant about things that may be going on in a student's lives. The midterm and exams do not have clear instructions.

Joan (or Joey, as she prefers) is a very dry teacher who teaches an exceptionally dry course. The films that she has chosen to show for a history in film class are too strange and alienating to be dissected for her long essay and even longer exam. Would not recommend this course.

Chooses old movies but you can tell she's passionate about the material. Extremely kind. She knows what she's talking about and everything is extremely straight forward. only 1 paper, you'll do well in tutorials just by showing up. Make sure you read tutorial material or you'll make a fool out of yourself during tutorials with her.

Super friendly and funny. Talks a lot and doesn't put lecture slides up online, so if you miss a lot of classes you're basically screwed. But, she's super willing to talk in office hours and will let you switch tutorials. She really knows what she's talking about and is very accommodating. Would totally take again.

Sweetest prof alive, taught through modules online that you could go back and visit anytime. Readings are heavy but tutorials are engaging, upbeat, fun, and I actually felt like I was learning more through them. Fair grader and specific about what she wants, so just follow instructions. Cares about her students success and wants to help.

the class is relatively entertaining, but her lectures were very long and if you miss a lecture... good luck. it's like being assaulted with information. she's a nice person and very funny but she's not a good prof. avoid taking the class with this prof.

i took Dr. Powers class and found it really interesting. the problem is that there are tutorials every other week which a huge part of your grade is on, she doesn't give study guides for the midterm or exam, she is not accommodating AT ALL, even if you have accommodations, it's hard to reach her,

Engaging & passionate lectures but poorly formatted, no slides and nothing posted on D2L. If you miss a class, you're screwed. High expectations that are hard to meet due to the vague content + formatting of the class. Rarely gives marks over 75% and never over 85%. Somewhat accommodating but very intimidating. Stay on top of this class.

Lectures are overly vague and overall messy. She doesn't use powerpoints but instead uses hand-written notes that she projects onto a screen. She seems very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches but presents it in a way that is difficult to understand. In seminars, she will pick on you if you do not participate so be aware of that.

Dr. Power's lectures were funny and interesting; it was clear that she was passionate and engaged in the material. However, she was extremely unorganized in terms of slide presentations, assignment expectations, and study guides. She was great with providing visual aid, but if you're someone who needs text to learn, her lectures had next to none.
