Great teacher!! Explains lectures very well. You need to study for the tests but they are not impossible. He gives a quiz every week that arent very hard, and you have about 4 tests.
Good teacher
Hes a great teacher. He has a great personality and cracks jokes in class. His tests arent very hard and he puts obviously wrong answers on there from movies. Weekly 5 ? pop quiz. Pretty good class.
He is a great teacher! I really was not looking forward to taking Biology, but he makes it really interesting. When he lectures he writes the notes on the board. His test are not hard, you just need to study, and I recommend reading the chapter. If you get a chance take his class.
Hes a good teacher and I learned more than I thought. A 9 AM class but he keeps you awake with cool stuff and jokes and hes hot!
Great proffesor, and very cute!
Very good professor, weekly quiz very easy..test do take some studying but are straight from the notes he puts on the board, try to make every class
I dropped his class! You take about 3 or 4 pages of notes everyday and a pop quiz every week. He gives you so much material to learn its hard to memorize it all! His tests and quizzes are really hard! The class moves really quickly!

Great guy and a very interesting class. The tests are manageable and the lab is not too difficult if you have basic knowledge of plants.
Shaw is the best teacher! I definately recommend taking him for biology. If you take any other teacher you are really missing out! He explains things very well. His notes are amazing. They are outlined and he gives a quiz once a week over them. He will help you ANY time you need it. He is VEry nice and easy to talk to! This class was one of my fav.
Shaw was okay until the day of the final. The final was very tough and, along with the required plant collection, it brought my grade for the course from an A down to a C. Getting a C in a biology course when I really love biology was very upsetting and humiliating. Thanks for hurting my GPA!!!
Love Pro. Shaw, you must study but he presents his lectures very clear- using an outline format. He gives one quiz a week which gives you a chance to help your grade if you are not the greatest test taker. Don't really need the book. He is very helpful but expects you to do your best!
He is SO interesting. I hate science and i pay attention in this class. His quizzes are easy just study your notes and you will be fine. Not to mention, it isn't too hard to stare at him the entire class...very cute.
take this class! he is a really good teacher and very interesting. he will help you if you need it and will take time to make sure you understand it. never had to use book, tests straight from notes!
Great prof. Im not that interested in biology but hes funny and hot. I could listen to him all day. I wish all my profs were this interesting and made my other classes this fun. Take Shaw if you can.
Nice guy. Pretty easy class. Tries to be funny but is definately pretty boring! Attendance isn't mandatory. Don't buy the book!!! First test is easy but they do get a little harder---not much though! Easy enough A!
Everyone is right, you don't need the textbook at all. Tests come straight from the notes. You do need to go to class cause he tends to go through things quickly so you can get the notes and make sure you understand. Tests are all multiple choice. He likes to make jokes every now and then and he seems to really care. Good guy.
he's pretty good at what he does..all his tests come straight outta notes! very cool guy
He was always very interesting in class and he made the material easy to learn. never used the book and his test were not hard if you went to class and took the notes that he wrote on the board. a fun teacher.
Great guy! Presents notes in outline form. Learn material from lecture and you will be fine. Didn't use the book. He is more than willing to help you in anyway he can.
Great professor!! Always helpful. Didn't used the textbook, learned class lectures. Loved the attitude he had with the subject, definitely kept the class interesting.
Dr. Shaw is an awesome teacher! He covers all the material on his tests during lecture. Attendance is not mandatory but if you miss a lecture you won't make an A in the couse. There are weekly quizzes but you don't need your book!
Great guy and a fun class. He throws in a lot of humor to the class and makes it very interesting. Be prepared to study though-he grades ridiculously hard on the tests.
The worst professor I have ever had. He grades extremely hard and he shows NO remorse for students. He had a total of 26 D's and F's this semester. If you want to keep your GPA in great standing, don't take him.
Awesome & HOT kat! He's a REAL teacher he knows his stuff that u don't even need the txtbook very good clarity on subj. pop quizzes&tests strictly from notes i didn't have txtbook and got an "A" for the semester He's awesome i wish he taught every bio course since that's my major i STRONGLY RECOMMEND HIM if you want to learn and get an easy "A"
I took and got an A in both biol 416 and 352 from Shaw. He is a great teacher who knows his stuff. He makes class very interesting and adds humor to all of his lectures. Sometimes he can grade tough, but he is always fair.
He is a great teacher. He helps you if you ask. He has atleast a quiz a week and 4 exams and a final. He is a really good teacher.
This class is so easy. His notes are what the test is over. You do have to go to class to take the notes, and you have weekly quizzes usually only 5 points. He's awesome and will help if you need it.
Most boring class I've ever had. Shaw will list a bunch of boring mundane details and expect you to memorize every bullet point. Take only if you find memorization of tedious facts entertaining in and of itself.
Writes on the board nonstop for 80 minutes. Great for people who want to work on their handwriting, horrible for everyone else. If you don't learn best through mindlessly copying from the board then this class isn't for you. Otherwise it would be tough to stay awake, which is probably his reasoning. Class is mostly about obscure people in history.
All of his tests come straight from his notes. Don't need to by a textbook, but did come in handy at times. He writes everything on the board for you and test questions come straight from notes. easy if you look over your notes.
Not your typical survey course, Shaw is teaching it as a major related subject. This means you'll end up spending 6 credit hours of study time for a 3 credit hour elective. This can reek havoc on your schedule if you work and/or are taking more important major related courses.
Memorize Memorize Memorize. Do not try to understand the concepts. Shaw, being the young teacher that he is, has no capacity to see understanding in a sentence with wording different from the exact phrase in the notes. Memorize every phrase, don't worry about what it means. Grading is based on how many phrases you can regurgitate on the test.
Really good teacher, but his tests and quizzes are hard. But he's always wanting questions and his office door is always open.
One of the best teachers I've ever had.
Worst teacher I've ever had.
Dr. Shaw is a great professor. If you are an upper level biology major you should know by this point that there is no such thing as an easy A. If you go to every class, listen and take detailed notes, and read over them from time to time you will be fine.
Dr. Shaw is a great teacher. He gives you all the information you need in a clear manner (usually outline form). If you go to class every day and review your notes every day, you'll be fine. However, I find it hard to ask him questions. Sometimes he'll act like it's the most difficult thing to have to answer a question if it's not a "good question"
Shaw is a very, very clear and concise teacher. Just go to class and take the notes that he gives you (outlines) and you'll be fine. I don't think I even opened my textbook until second semester when I took 122. (not from Shaw). Excellent teacher. Makes it very interesting.
Great prof. Willing to help with anything you need. He moves fast, so he is not for students who have difficulty focusing.
Shaw is a great teacher. He always answers questions in class and has a good sense of humor. There are weekly quizzes that are pretty easy if you pay attention to the lecture. I would definitely recommend his to anyone.
Dr.shaw is a great prof. as long as you go to class all the time and pay attention you will be fine. He can relate stuff that you learn to everyday life... and he has a great sense of humor and is always willing to help you no matter what you need help with...
Dr.Shaw is a great professor, this semester he was my favorite. He relates what he is teaching to everyday life. just take the notes and study the notes, you have weekly quizzes that ate 5 questions, which are super easy. test are over the notes. no need for the book unless you want extra reference
Shaw is a great teacher. He has pop quizzes that are 5 questions twice a week, so attendance is mandatory. He takes a lot of notes, so sit close to the board. He uses pictures throughout his lecture to give the students visuals & after his lectures, studying is easy. He's also not bad to look at. He has a bald Kurt Cobain look going on.
Dr. Shaw is the best teacher i have ever had. He explains everything extremely well and if you study your notes you will make an A. Also, he is very handsome and I really hated to leave his class.
BEST TEACHER! this class was so easy. pop quizzes come directly from his notes, tests come directly from notes and use questions from pop quizzes. he loves this class and you can tell. would take him again any day!
has anyone else noticed that he looks ridiculously similar to Jack Shephard from LOST???? oh yeah good professor.
Absoulutely loved this class. The material is a bit much, but the way Dr. Shaw teaches the class makes you remember the info far beyond the final. My friends and I still regularly go plant collecting, and I now have my own personal herbarium. Take Dr. Shaw but be prepared to study though
Lecture seems pretty easy but the tests are two pages and all short answer so you have to know your stuff. Lab is awesome but challenging. There is a lot to learn but it is very enjoyable. Dr. Shaw will walk around answering questions. Start your collection ASAP!!!
Probably one of the worst teachers I have had. My friend recommended him to me, and although his notes are great and his style of teaching is fun the quizzes are horrible! He gives us 5 questions each quiz and they are multiple choice but there can be more than one answer for each that is unfair. If you miss one of the answers you get it wrong! EW!
Fairly easy class if you study your notes. You also have to take good notes and make excellent lab sketches because he grades your notebooks periodically, but if you've been keeping up with it, it's an easy grade to help you overall. Tests are hard, so be sure to know ALL the info from notes. We didn't have to buy a textbook though, which was nice.
He is a very hard teacher. He thinks that his Biology class is the only class that you have and could careless how hard and how much you are studying for the tests. On the quizes he puts trick questions up and says, "This is college you should be able to do this." He makes you feel dumb if you dont understand. There is no curve and no extra credit.
He is a good teacher, but the tests are hard if you didnt study; make sure when you study, do the questions at the end of the chapter cuz some will come from there. and if you dont understand anything, he is more willing to make it clear for you! JUST ASK!! try not to miss class and take good notes! start out studying so you dont have to catch up!
Good teacher. makes biology interesting. After the first test I had a D, but I ended up with an A in the class. YOU MUST WORK FOR YOUR GRADE! Multiple choice test but more than one answer per question sometimes. Test come from inclass notes and the book. Quiz once a week. Do your job as a college student and study, and you will do fine.
if you are looking for a super easy class that you can skip a lot and still get a good grade DONT SIGN UP FOR SHAW! however, he is an amazing, EXTREMELY personable teacher. i'm not saying his class is hard, you just have to try. he is my favorite teacher at utc by far!! dr. shaw, if you read this, you're fantastic!
Great teacher, but very hard. If you work hard you will learn a lot. Attendence is a must. He gives pop quizzes once a week. He is very funny and a very great biology class. I would recommend him to anyone majoring in Biology
TAKE HIM. On a positive note, you will not learn more in Bio I from any other professor, he's so knowledgable and CLEAR. The downside is that you will have to work harder in this class than with other Bio I professors. If you need to really learn the material (for MCAT, DAT, PCAT) then take him. If you won't work, then he's definitely not for you.
Don't miss class, take good notes, he's a great teacher with super hard tests. Also he has no sympathy, a girl in our class was in the hospital with pneumonia for two days before the test, came in on test day and he still made her take the test. Don't have an accident or get sick - no love here. But you will know the info when he's done
Not clear on what he teaches and goes too fast. Go to every class! he has no sympathy for anyone. I would never take him again
Like everyone says do not buy book. Very fast and very hard test if you have three hours to study just his notes everyday of the semester he is right for you, otherwise do not!! Do not miss one class!! Will not reply to e mails so don't even bother. If you have no life you and shaw would probably become best friends.
If you are looking for a simple Biology class, then Shaw is not for you. He gives quizzes once a week, which come straight from the notes. Make sure you know your notes backwards and forwards because the quizzes are only five questions. Tests are hard, but they are passable. He definitely knows his stuff. Just take good notes and study ALOT!!!
Dr. Shaw is an amazing teacher. He knows what he's talking about. You HAVE to go to class and you HAVE to take notes and study them. It's not a piece of cake class, you have to learn. However, he does realize that most ppl in there aren't biology majors so he makes it interesting for everybody. Has some good stories.
Shaw has no mercy. This call is half biology half art. If you can't draw you will do bad on his notebook checks, which he says he doesn't grade on drawing ability but he clearly does. He knows his stuff but teaches this 2000 level class like a 4000. If you're looking for an easy bio class stay away from him. Tests are super hard and tricky.
Dr. Shaw is very thorough in lectures- and, therefore, his tests. Study, take excellent notes, and spend time on 'notebooks'... Guaranteed A. Wonderful (and fun) professor!
Excellent professor and a serious academic. Expects real work from his students and has no mercy for the excuses and laziness. On the other hand, his class is very interesting and he has great stories. Show up, take excellent notes, and study and you'll do well, but not an easy A. You'll leave there fully enriched if you do.
His class consisted of 4 fifty point tests which only adds up to 200 points. With his tough grading if you mess up the slightest you are SOL. If you are a good test taker and feel the urge to take an unnecessary challenge go for it.
Dr. Shaw is definitely one of the best biology professors in the state. He's really passionate about what he's teaching, and he really respects his students. You definitely have to work a little bit to get a good grade. After all, good grades in upper-level classes aren't free, but he makes every minute worth it. Amazing, fun lectures.
Dr. Shaw is awesome. I take him every chance I get.
Absolutely great professor, wonderful in a lot of ways. Very understanding and he is well versed in his literature (especially when it pertains to his subject matter). I would strongly recommend him to anyone. A great teacher but an even better person. Take this class if you aren't afraid to work.
Go to class, study your notes and you should do well. He pays attention to you even if you think he isn't and that plays a major role on your grade.
One of the hardest biology classes at UTC without a doubt. Fun class, but the tests are killer. Avoid if possible.
Had Dr. Shaw's Biogeography class. The prof. is highly knowledgeable and interested in his field, which translates into class. The professor wants students to actually understand the material, so the tests are solely over the lectures, and are detail oriented and ruthlessly graded. The class is fairly difficult, but Dr. S teaching makes up for it
His lectures are quite funny and engaging. His tests are harder than you think though, definitely read the readings that he gives on Blackboard- I regretted not reading them the first two tests. He does give a few projects that will earn you a few extra points. He is the plant man, so expect to learn more about plants than animals.
(took plant morphology during covid) He is very specific on he wants on the HW notes, so they take awhile to do (usually took about 5 hours every week). He wasn't too difficult and was a funny guy, but I wish he did better at responding to students. What he said was often different from the syllabus. Lab isn't a thing, it's just continued lecture
Class was online due to COVID, with the F2F class being much harder and quite different (in terms of tests, projects, etc.) IMO. There's a lot of material to go through, and if you're not inclined to really learn the material it can be hard to digest. He's the most knowledgeable prof. I know, would definitely recommend but expect a challenge.
Had Dr. Shaw for both plant taxonomy and plant morphology. He refuses to let students see what they got correct or incorrect on tests, which is Incredibly unfair to students actually trying to learn. Gives absolutely NO feedback, NO justification for your grade, NEVER answers emails! Says he doesn't grade on your ability to draw but he def does!!
Usually a pretty good professor, but a has a switch in personality when plant collection in Plant Taxonomy starts. He requires undergraduates to collect 50 specimens and graduates to collect 100 specimens for your end-of-the year "final" I guess you could say. He grades everyone like a graduate student. Anything "common" and he takes off points.
I took this class bc it was available + regretted every minute of it. He is a nice guy - his intentions are good and he is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. But he is not a good professor. He only says things once, and then its gone forever. TOUGH and gave NO constructive feedback. His feedback on specimens was literally "this sucks" BEWARE!
Dr. Shaw is an okay guy. Lectures for this class were almost 3 hours combining lectures during class and lab time. Very hard to reach outside of class (doesn't email back). Information in lectures comes from all over the place (doesn't repost slides). A lot of information is covered, and can sometimes be very hard to follow and keep up in class.
This teacher reads directly from the slides and doesn't elaborate on anything unless asked to. He also does not post any lecture slides to Canvas. I took Outreach and Education for Conservation with Dr. Shaw and got to participate in a couple cool biological events but I didn't actually learn ANYTHING new. Very easy yet very disappointing class.
Difficult course but a great professor. Communicates complex information very well. Great course structure too. Take good notes and pictures of slides since they are not accessible outside of class. Go to lectures and ask questions and you will do fine. Attendance grade at beginning of every class.
Plant Morphology is a tough class. The lectures go fast and cover a ton of material every day. Prof. Shaw is a good guy though and makes it interesting. His exams are HARD but you can use notes. He has a genuine passion for botany and is easy to talk to/ask questions. I wouldn't take the class unless you really are interested in the topics.
