Harvard/Yale grad and greatest class on campus! reading a lot but easy!
what all teachers should be like. Makes anything interesting and is easy!!
Compassionate and helpful. When pairing up on C&E professors, pick this man, he will even help you with the other prof's assignments! makes **** interesting too! not too many papers.
Awesome teacher, focuses on LEARNING instead of writing pointless papers, easy teacher, cool guy, just loads of fun. take him if you have the chance
Once you take this prof. you will not be able to take any other class again. He may have you read a book a week, but you will love every minute of it. Seems easy because he is so good. You will write better than you ever have before.
Prof. Ahr is uber cool and very intelligent. He knows how to get his students interested in the subject, while seeming interested in the students at the same time. take one of his classes, you wont be dissapointed. (by the way ladies, he is VERY handsome)
sexy mo fo.
Professor Ahr is intelligent, understanding and an excellent teacher. He gets his message across very clearly. He gives a fair amount of homework--not overwhelming, but still challenging. He is very sexy too! Too bad he's married w/ 2 kids =(
Great class and professor. Thank goodness there is a history teacher who is interesting and personable. He was a great prof with tons of information to share. A good choice.
This man is amazing. He knows so much and his teaching methods are wonderful. I plan to run away with him and keep him all to myself. I don't know what it is but the man is gorgeous.
I am in LOVE with this man. He is so smart and helpful. He gets to the point without making you write a billion papers. GOOD CHOICE! He might have a wife and two kids but heck watching him teach during class is enough for me. PLUS his accent is CUTE TOO!..
Just to look at him made the class worthwhile. He was so hot and tan. To bad he has a wife...lucky her

he's oh so hott and oh so smart. i love looking at him and love learning from him. great!

This man is brilliant...by far, my favorite at this university. He's humble and kind, and always willing to help. And he's also absolutely beautiful...Take him, take him...
not only is this man very attractive, he's also very smart. a great history teacher all the way!
This man is amazing. By letting you read less of the book, he has you think more about it in class. Fantastic teacher. Extremely personable and flexible with assignments. Take him!

Ahr understands what's going on for students and restricts the workload, which is not intense, but still requires you to think about what you're writing! Have to take him if he's available
I had Dr. Ahr when he taught at Muhlenberg. He taught a class on Algeria. I thought I'd die of boredom. I was wrong. You know you have a great prof when he can get you interested in everything.

the easiest teacher ever...he ended class early every day and no reading was necessary...a take home midterm and final...soooo easy
Very nice guy. He knows the subject matter extremely well, and engages the class in very interesting discussions. We had several books to read in class, many of which were very good.Ahr is a pleasure to take, and I strongly recommend everybody to take his class if you get the chance.
the class is not too hard. just a lot of reading! he's helpful and very nice.
very easy grader! maybe too easy. nice and all.
Made my Freshman year fun. This professor is best at what he does. He is truly a professor with expertise in any subject you bring upon him and very interesting to learn from. Take this professor once in your Hofstra College career. A lot of Hofstra Prof should folllow in his steps in teaching. The work was interest and gave a lot of insight. A++++
he's a grea t professor and follows his syllabus really well. knows what he is talking about and tries to make his class fun to be in as well as interesting. very helpful and nice grader!
he is a moron. he doesnt read the books and wastes everyones time. i learned next to nothing from this man
If one were to look up "professor" in the dictionary, you will find a picture of Professor Ahr for he is not only very educated and intelligent in his field, but also genuinely cares and understands the student's needs. He assigns a moderate amount of work which if you take seriously, really enhances your mind and makes you feel more intellectual.
def. one of the 2 best professors on campus (the other being berlinerblau). this man is so awesome and an easy grader. he's more interested in teaching you something and getting feedback from students than grading. and hes so incredibly nice.
he is probbaly the worst professor ever. he didnt read the books at all. wasted everyones time. he didnt even know the title of one of the books we read and he called it the poor boy story. TERRIBLE
professor ahr's class was amazing! it was so interesting and he makes a lot of funny jokes... although you read a lot of books they are definetly worth it and the journal entries are fun and easy to do! you should def take this class!
OK, so it's been a whole semester since i took him, but unless he's undergone a severe metamorphisis, anything bad someone has to say about him in regards to his teaching ability/effectiveness is, in my opinion, a lie. he doesn't give too much work, but the work he gives is very meaningful if you choose to take it seriously. wonderful prof.
Clearly one of the best professors at Hofstra. If you have to take HUHC then do yourself a favor and take it with Prof. Ahr. He is intelligent, informative, and knows when things are getting to boring and how to fix it. Grades well and really tries to help if you don't grasp something.
This class was pretty easy and he is the best professor. Gave a lot of reading but not text book reading, instead some short books that were actually pretty interesting. Easy grader. One take home essay and a final take home paper. Has you write essays in class to prevent having to do work at home.Definitely the best prof Ive taken in the hist dept
by far the best professor at hofstra. just take this class and you'll see.
Class was pretty easy. A LOT of reading from novels (there is no text book for the course). 8 books for the semester. Very little work otherwise outside of class. Most of the graded assignments are done in class. If you can handle the reading and enjoying learning history from a literature perspective then take him.
easy professor that pushes you to think. some of the classes were boring but others were interesting. he assigned 8 books but admitted that skimming through and reading a few chapters was all we really needed to do. graded based on a 1 p. response for each story and short paper.
If your gpa needs a shot in the arm, take this class! Lots of reading but not unreasonable, all novels no textbook, one major paper. Prof. Ahr is very enthusiastic in class, if you have a good attitude this will be the easiest class you'll ever take; a stress free 3 credits and an A.
The easiest A ever! That says it all!!!
The easiest A EVER. You don't have to read the books as you can barely skim to get by. The writings were an absolute joke and the final paper was even a bigger joke. Ahr was the nicest man ever, but I can honestly say that I didn't learn a thing.
This was probably one of the best classes I've ever taken. There is a lot of reading but it's only novels and that's it. Ahr is super interesting (and hot in a nerdy swedish way - he is swedish). Every class we spend the first 20 minutes talking about some random funny story about something that he did. I would definitely recommend the class! :)
he loves to hear himself speak. he would read entire chapters out loud to the class...total waste of time. he claims that he wants to encourage student discussion, but he is the only one who makes points. however, he is a very nice and laid back guy. this was a random seminar, so maybe he is different in regular history classes.
OMG......An awesome experience! Now I'm studying to be just like Mr. Ahr. So much fun to look at and admire. His wife is soooooooo lucky.
he is so cute he has an adorable accentt loves itt
whatever
He's clueless. You have to read eight books and do in class writing on them. He has very inconsistent and confusing grading on the papers. He's obsessed with himself and took literally half a class to explain how we should act the next class because he was being reviewed for tenure. Make sure you participate - it helps.Oh yeah, and a ten page final
Great Guy, his class is long and sometimes boring, but he is an easy grader and works with the students. Books are easy to skim over and the final paper writes itself. Very easy course w/ Good professor
He really has a passion for the readings that he assigns. He just assigns TOO MUCH. It's a whole novel a week and a 500 word paper per week on each novel. But it's not necessary to read every word. He likes to hear himself talk and will dismiss class at the last possible second. Attendance is mandatory. He is nice but just boring.
Nice guy. A little boring. Tons of reading, there is no text book. just books. Basically you read a book a weak. Easy class, not too much work, besides reading. Easy grader. Talks a lot and sometimes talks about things completely irrelavent to the topic, but he's a nice guy.
Beautiful, beautiful man, easy class. Lot of reading but it's all novels, no textbook. You can skim the books to get buy and talk in class a little and he likes you. Easy grader. He is absolutely beautiful and incredibly intelligent. TAKE HIM!!!!
Really adorable professor. He's super cute, and whitty. There are many books, but you don't have to read them so thoroughly to do well. Take his courses, he's a really understanding guy. His grading is fair, and sort of easy.
I agree with everyone else on here, he's basically the nicest guy ever. I feel like you can't have a soul in order to dislike him. He's really understanding & a very intellectually curious person, a really good conversationalist. The reading borders on excessive, but you still can read parts to get the idea. Chill got, got a lot of respect for him.
Prof. Ahr is SUCH a nice guy. He's very talkative and friendly, and a fair grader. The only reason I wouldn't take him again is that he assigns SO SO SO SO much reading - although I can't imagine that he thinks we really get through all. Assigns small writings throughout the semester and a 10 page paper at the end.
I have all great things to say about Ahr- nice guy, very helpful, very kind, great class.. EXCEPT HE NEVER SUBMITTED HIS GRADES TO THE SYSTEM!! 3 weeks later... I'm really disappointed. Maybe it's a mistake in the system or a personal problem but he's lazy with grading.
He's a really nice guy. Participation and going to class is what is really going to help your grade. He's pretty slow on grading and doesn't really explain why he gives you certain grades on papers. There are 10 books and a 500 word essay for each. Overall he and the class are interesting.
Ahr is a really nice guy, who is extremely interested in what he is teaching and the classes' enthusiasm, but he's obsessed with participation and unless you participate constantly you won't be able to get a good grade. Like the others said, he's slow with grading, but besides that the books are interesting and the rest of the class is manageble
Excellent course to take with this Professor. I enjoyed learning history through the novels assigned rather than a text book.Prof. encourage class participation & your opinion.Does count toward grade but not hard. No tests just read, write & participate & you will do well.Prof, is easy going & knowledgeable. Taken twice & will again when needed
Nice guy, Always tries to throw in some corny jokes or funny stories. There are always movies that coincide with the books we read which is always good. Dialogue of lectures will consist of "ummm uhhhh ummm"
Torn. He's a GREAT lecturer and he's really interesting. BUT, I got A's on ALL assignments & then got a B in the class (2 wks AFTER the deadline/end of semester BTW). He claimed "my A" wasn't as strong as the "other A's," but the syllabus never mentioned any type of curve. So fair warning:EARNING an A will not necessarily YIELD an A in his class.
Easiest professor ever. Had him for a "discussion" period but it was really just him talking about his own opinions. He's kind of full of himself which can get annoying, but the assignments are all jokes and you don't need to read anything or even go to lecture to keep up. I recommend him for C&E.
Prf. Ahr is one of the best professors at Hofstra! I have taken a few classes with him, and he is always consistent in his grading and very fair. He does assign a lot of reading, but it is not always necessary. You can pretty much skim it, just participate in class and he will love you! I would recommend him to anyone and every one!
HE GAVE ME A "(B)" AND CANT EXPLAIN WHY. WONT MEET ME TO EXPLAIN MY GRADE. YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING FROM THIS CLASS. DO NOT TAKE IT ITS POINTLESS FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO WANT AN EASY B
Has you read a ton of pointless books. He is really lazy, and his grading and handwriting make no sense. Take this class if you want a B for doing nothing. If you care about history or getting As then avoid.
Professor Ahr is a really nice guy and he really enjoys the subject matter. He requires you to read around 10 books for the semester which is really difficult but he never gives anything below a B. He showed movies every other week. If you don't mind getting a B, then definitely take this class!
This guy is the man. He gives a lot of reading but all you need to do is get the gist of the book and your fine. Good lectures, he's brilliant (2 masters and a phd from Harvard) but doesn't brag it. I haven't met a single good student (emphasis on good) that hasn't gotten an A-. I have gotten 3 myself.
Mixed feelings. The class is easy because you can not read all that he assigns and still survive because we don't have tests and he discusses everything we read in the next class. TOO MUCH reading for one class and this is coming from an English major. I started liking him better when we got further into the semester. Not very organized.
Professor Ahr is an amazing professor. Had him for an independent study. He assigns great readings and great discussions. Take him if you want an interesting class with interesting readings!
Professor Ahr is the best professor on campus hands down. He is really good at what he does and there is never a dull moment in any of his classes. He always wants to make sure that students get good grades in his classes and he is willing to help make that a reality. The books picked for class are books that you will want to read. Great Professor!
Attendance is mandatory, books are online.
He is the sweetest man ever. A lot of reading but you don't even have to read them half the time. Seems like a lot of work but isn't too bad. I really enjoyed listening to him talk. Very knowledgable. Also very funny, absolutely loved him would take him again if I could. He is also a big Mets fan so he can talk about that with a student forever.
Assigns way too much reading. This class was just a glorified book club. Any librarian who was familiar enough with the material could have led the discussions. This felt more like a literature class than a history class. Dreadfully boring. Do not recommend.
Prof. Ahr is very passionate about the topics he discusses. He will teach you a lot. He randomly calls on you to participate. I did not read any of the books for class. Journal writing is mediatory and one 8 pg paper. He's a slow grader. He is a good professor and his class is interesting
One of the best professors I have had so far at Hofstra. He is so sweet and he really cares about his students and making sure they understand the material. There is no textbook required for the class but there are books that you have to read throughout the semester and it is a lot of reading but it shouldn't take you long. Made class a lot fun!!
One of my favorite professors at Hofstra. Goes off topic more often than not but it's always interesting and related to the theme in some way. He assigned 5 or 6 books and gave an easy assignment for each. We watched a few movies, had a speaker come in, all that great stuff. He makes lots of dad jokes so class was always pretty funny. 8.5/10
He's not a BAD professor, he's just not the most engaging. In that sense, I mean he's terrible at keeping the attention of students. It's SO hard to stay awake. And I'm passionate about this subject. I do all of the reading. I do all of the work, and yet it's just not his best area I guess you could say. He is nice, though. Not intimidating.
Randomly assigns writings according to the books and films, but rarely in class. There's a lot, however most of the time class is just discussion and then he'll give you a specific chapter to write about at home. Goes off on meaningless tangents but is a really nice guy and is flexible with due dates. Kind of a tough grader but easy to do well.
Class seems like a lot of reading and work at first but its very easy to fake it. He frequently cancels class. Most of my first year seminar didnt read the material and still got As. Very kind man and gives good feedback, although his handwriting is hard to decipher. Would take him again. The course was interesting and I still learned a lot.
doesn't try at teaching.
Honestly He is the best professor I have had in my years at Hofstra. The work is the usual, just do it an you will pass with a really nice grade. He really knows how to teach in an effective way. There are readings, but they aren't that bad at all.
Terrible
Prof. Ahr is super easy going. My class is reading heavy, but you never don't have enough time to read everything. Discussions are what you are graded on, so be prepared with a couple notes for class. Overall, great guy!
I had him for Intro to Global history during a Winter Session, he was a really good professor. We were assigned 3 books, I skimmed them wrote notes all in like an hour and a half. He let out early. It was really easy to get an A, just participate and try your best on the essays. Email him if you're unclear about anything.
He starts with a lecture and then opens the floor for students to speak. For this class, just read the material and do the assigned papers and youll get a good grade. The most important thing to note for Professor Ahr is participation! Even if you get all As, you need to participate to maintain that A. If you put in effort he notices.
Professor Ahr is really great! There is lots of reading, but honestly you can fake it really easy or just do it later while you write your paper on it. Papers and movies are usually very short, and most of the readings he assigned were pretty good. Careful though, his handwriting is kinda bad and sometimes it's hard to read his feedback on papers.
Professor Ahr is a great professor. His lectures were very interesting, and her deeply cares about his students. However, get ready to read A LOT. He assigned about six books throughout the semester, and you had a week to read each one, with a writing assignment directly after we finished each book. In addition, participation is very important.
I took this class online because of COVID. I turned in assignments on time and grades would not make it into the grade book until at least 4 weeks after the assignment was due. He always commented on the discussion boards but never offered feedback on what you did incorrectly or even how to improve for the future.
I took this class online asynchronously due to COVID. Ahr took forever to grade anything, and his comments on graded work had nothing to do with the quality of your work, making it very hard to improve your writing. For a distance learning class it was a fair amount of work, the way he graded, however, was a little frustrating.
Every class was a lecture, and they varied in levels of interesting. He did not give good feedback on essays, so I never knew how to get a better grade. He cares most about participation in class, so if you participate (but write bad essays) I think your grade will be fine. Overall, I enjoyed his class.
Ahr might actually take the cake for the most boring professor out there. He spends the entirety of every single one of his classes just talking, though rambling might be a more apt word for it. He clearly knows the material he's talking about very well unfortunately he can neither communicate it effectively or design a course to save his life.
He was alright. Beware, he talks A LOT, and goes off topic each time. He was always late but we got out early. If he allows anyone to give their opinion at the end of class, participate as much as you can. He cares about participation and will give you a good grade if you do so. Easy class if you participate and do the readings.
Do the readings and participate. Hes dry and boring, but if you engage with him, its better.
Topics covered in class were pretty interesting, but he was so unbelievably dull. Class mostly consists of him sharing his opinions on the books, then asking for student input. Participation is important and makes class a little better, but he's not great at getting information across in an accessible manner.
Gustav Ahr in the heart of a beast
Professor Ahr was my favorite professor at Hofstra. Awesome dude that really cares about his students. There is quite a bit of reading in his courses and he does lecture a lot. I liked the lectures a lot and found them extremely interesting. But they do examine the most horrific parts of humanity like genocide. Ahr is a wonderful person.
I loved Professor's Ahr class. Definitely lots of reading but they were always super interesting and was surprisingly the first class I actually did the readings for. Learned a lot. He is a heavy lecturer but he says very insightful things. As long as you say a comment once a class you'll get a good grade. I really enjoyed his class though.
Although you will be reading at least 5 books over the course of the semester all of them have had an audiobook version available. The classes could not be easier. He would just discuss the assigned reading with the class and only 7-8 people need to participate to take you to the end of the class. He is also just an interesting guy, overall 9/10.
Professor Ahr was an alright professor when it came to papers and researching for them. However, when talking about in-class time, the discussions are never-ending. For the majority of the class, he rambles on and gives little to no time for full-class participation at the end. Also, he makes you read entire books in literal days, so be prepared.
Not a bad professor but also not good. Super easy to reach if you need help. Not really clear on expectations for assignments. Talks ALOT!!- about nothing important too. You will do well if you participate and go into detail with your papers. Easy A or high B.
He's very nice and understanding. Lectures are a little long and boring and tend to go off-topic but overall, the class was super easy. Participate a few times and he'll appreciate it.
Great Professor, there's a lot of reading required and a few papers so be prepared for that
he is a good prof, he does tend to talk about things that dont relate to the class lecture but it passes time. he gives a lot of paper and really like participation. he writes down every time you participate and puts it towards your grade. every graded assignment is a paper, no tests or quizzes. your hw is to read pages from the books. take him !!
Professor Ahr has very boring lectures that will put you to sleep. Despite this, the class is very easy as far as the work load goes, and he is a moderately easy grader. You don't need to participate, and from the looks of it, most people don't.
Professor Ahr is a great professor. He is knowledgeable of the subject he teaches, which leads to him doing most of the talking and not pressing any student to participate. Lectures can be long and heavy. He shows great films. He is a very easy and fair grader. Great class for a first year student!
Definitely take him if you have the chance. He is very passionate about his field and wants you to be the same. Nothing more or less. Just participate, and whether you have similar or different opinions, he won't penalize you. He deeply cares about his students doing well.
Best prof. Ever
Terrible professor. Forces you to buy 5 different books that you're never going to use again. Expects you to read 20 chapters in a span of a week or two. Rambles about random stuff during class. Strict due dates but takes forever to grade. Is not available for extra help. Just don't take him.
Professor Ahr's HIST020 class can be a bit dry, but if you engage with the material and participate regularly, you'll get a decent grade. The workload is manageable, and the readings are interesting. I found Unstuck study super helpful for study prep - it saved me a lot of time.
Professor Ahr is a very respectable person and academic. It's obvious he is versed in the subject, although his life experience tends to result in him going on tangents during class. Make sure to participate often, it's important to him and counts toward your grade. Do the reading so you can participate in the discussion and you should be good.
Good professor whose classes usually just come to listening and participating. He'll make you read some books, and you'll have to describe how certain chapters made you feel. The biggest downside is how boring the class is, but you can get by for an easy grade.
Makes you buy like 5 textbooks, expects you to read like half of each book before each class, just rambles for half of class about things he just made up. Papers are given a week for you to written, which is nice, but so boring.
Professor Åhr is a well versed in history and highly intelligent individual who at times goes on a tangent about semi-related topics. He expects students to have read 100 pages in two days, as though they don't have other assignments. We read five books and watched two movies. He assigns many papers but is a fair grader.
Hilarious professor and good at getting material across. The class is entirely lecture based and no homework. However, your entire grade is based on 2 essays.
