Agreed! His exams are quite different than his notes, but his notes are extremely clear & understandable. He's a no-nonsense guy & really gives you a taste of what's really out there!

seems like most other comments are from non-commies, But ya, Johan favours students who are from his faculty, esp. co-op students. So he teaches a lot better for those classes. His has a unique character - so you either like him or you dislike him.

Yea this guy has an attitude and I love it. You'll enjoy his courses very much if you're a true commie.

This guy's teaching style blew me away. If you take the time to listen and learn what he has to say, the textbook is child's play. He demands a lot from his students so that kept me motivated to give my best. Don't take some of his comments too personal though, you might end up crying. >=)

Johan... Your the man... but u have to lose the pants

Dr. De Rooy is a fantastic prof. A lot of ppl complain that he is too arrogant and nasty, but the truth is that he is preparing us for the harsh reality of the outside world that awaits us when we graduate. Clear examples in class, very fair exam questions and uses humour to get his point across.

Definitely does not fit the profile of your sterotypical accountant/accounting prof... he's very inspirational that way. Plays by his own rules, which you eventually learn to appreciate. If you really want to learn your accounting, Johan is your boy. Oh yes: He's also a fun ****

Tremendous prof. He's a very reality-driven prof, and as a result teaches material relevant for managerial careers. No bogus, esoteric junk, just good stuff. Really a dry, well thought out sense of humour too. Awesome prof, wicked class (so much better than financial acct!)

Johan is an excellent teacher. He's tough and demanding, yet very fair and understanding. You learn a lot in his class, more than you ever will from a textbook alone. I was a bit scared of him on the first day of class, but now I only wish that he will be teaching my upper level courses also.

Yes he's arrogant, yes he's harsh, but gosh did I learn to love him. The first day of class he rubbed me the wrong way immediately. I still disagree with the man on a number of issues but I came to love his class nonetheless and found his 'fatherly advice' totally endearing. Totally recommended.

Tough prof, but you learn a lot, which is kinda the point. Never laughed more than I did in his class. Always some ridiculous comment that you don't see coming and you can't help but laugh. Don't take him for the mark, take him for what you'll learn and the sense of humour.

He really cares so much about students' success that he would go out of his way to give you the best advice possible regarding your career objectives when it comes to pursuing one (or more) of the professional accounting designations.

he focuses too much on networking and doesnt teach the actual course. i havent learnt much. yes he's funny but i'm there to learn accounting! he's good if you'd rather network than focus on grades!

Best professor I had this semester. His insults are original and serve the purpose of helping students remember his examples. He's loud and proud and he is proud of it. His life lessons and his style of teaching make him a great professor for only students interested in learning what accounting is (rather than most profs that teach bookeeping).

Great prof - makes the lectures entertaining. The class was at 8:30, and I never started to fall asleep unless I had less than 4 hours sleep. His notes are superb. Be careful asking stupid questions though (or questions he already addressed).

Johan is the first professor to have a sense of humour as whacked as mine. At the root of Johan is a caring professor who gives his students a great knowledge base while promoting the Kyoto Protocol. If you have a work ethic and half a brain you will be able to get a respectable grade. As Johan will tell you any mark >80 means you have no life.

Fantastic Prof, EVERYTHING on his tests is from the lectures, so essentially throw out the text and study his notes for midterm/final. He likes to see students succeed, but also hates ignorance, so it may seem like hes an ass at times. Overall great prof though!

Awesome prof. Made me want to become an accountant. It was an 8:30 class and I only fell asleep once because he makes the material so interesting and relevant. He's great and drawing analogies and simplifying complex ideas. Be forewarned: Johan isn't exactly politically correct, if you care about that sort of thing. If not, GET IN HIS CLASS!

Only the second prof, (first one being Kroeker) that has managed to keep my attention for the entire term. Johan will tell you like it is and if he thinks you shouldn't be an accountant, take his advice.

The course is hard, but Johan makes it (somewhat) clear. Unlike other profs he doesnt baby you or take it easy on you. He tries to make class examples as real life as possible. If you want an easy good grade dont take the course with Johan. If you want to know your stuff, he is your guy. Strongly reccomend Johan even though I failed his course.

Johan is a tough professor who wants all his students to learn the material well. This is a challenging course, but if you work hard through his example problems and learn the material instead of memorizing it. You can do well in his class.

Johan is a top-notch prof. Not your average tone/style of lecture, but you will learn more than in your average classes. Tries to be fair with all students, regardless of their background, looks etc... but can be quick to judge at times; will readily admit if he's wrong which is not often. Take his courses, enough said.

I liked Johan - he was entertaining, and very supportive

Johan is one of the few profs who actually teaches you professional skills and approaches to problem solving that you can still use years later on your finance/accounting job. Not your average prof in terms of vocabulary or temper, but the lessons learned are well worth it.

I had Johan for my intermediate accounting course and was pleasantly surprised at how well I learned under him. Always teaching you to think beyond the textbook and presenting concepts in a way that you can remember them. He was entertaining and unbaised, taught classes where you learned to dig down to the real principles.
