Thinks that an intro course should be taught like its your major..if you hate working on things you cant stand, dont take her. Too much work!!
She teaches the class like you have all the knowledge in the world on the topic, she teaches it like this is your major (when its really just a requirement), her lectures are fact filled, but they are LONG and boring....
Really learned a lot in her clas. Really knows her stuff. Nice teacher, but tests can be hard if you don't study
She is very hard especially the midterms however...she is a real teacher, one you want to do well for. she is incredibly understanding and helpful and as long as you don't challenge her without evidence and data you'll be great.
a lot of work, too hard for an intro class especially if it is not your major. but probably one of the best teachers i have ever had.
It'a not an easy class but she's awesome..never dreaded going to her class and learned so much stuff that really helped me in my psych courses
really really good teacher and really interesting class. you'll learn a lot of new things that are real eye openers. however she is a tough grader so you better keep up with the reading. reading will get you better grades
good teacher, just have to do the reading and go to class even though she takes mental attendence. Test are hard
Extremely hard grader...u can try your best and still fail...one of the hardest teachers i have ever taken at monmouth
Really, you can't get an A in her class with her grading system, no matter what you do. You're graded on 3 tests. I aced the first, recieved a B on the second, and somehow ended up with C+ as a final grade. Highly aggravating.
She is a amazing professor I learned so many interesting things she made the class very interesting and made me want to try hard and do well. she really knew what she was talking about and was passionate about it. Very hard grader but I loved the class never dreaded it and her as a professor.
She is a great prof. She really is very passionate about what she teaches, which makes it much more fun to attend her class. She is very honest, and tries to get her students as involved as possible. I had her for a 10am class and she really woke me up every day i had her. In all you'll learn a lot.
took her 4 intro to soc. teaches it very well but in depth. very nice woman but u must work hard in her class & read all the assigned readings. the review sheets 4 exams are alot of work but the exam questions come directly from the review so DO IT! great professor, dunno if i would take her again.
VERYHELPFUL...ALL LECTURE NO HOMEWORK...3 EXAMS...HARD BUT IF YOU PAY ATTENTION AND ARE PREPARED YOU'LL DO FINE...
She has high expectations for her students, but she is not afraid to help each individual meet their goal. Very accessible, always answering questions, e-mails, setting up meetings, etc. She taught me so much. Her class was invaluable to me. I am a Soc. minor because of her. Her tests are hard, and there's a lot of reading, so if you're looking to slack off, drop the class.
For an intro class it is pretty in depth, but well worth it.There are few courses that I've taken outside of my major that I remember, this is one of them. I usually rush to return my books too, but because of her class I'm pretty sure I'll come back to them in a few years, just to compare some of the things we talked about with what has happened in my life. I look at things differently now, and I can't say that many classes have had that effect on me.
I'm not a good student at all, but I went to class took notes and studied and I got an A. Professor Foster really cares about what she teaches. She makes you interested and you can't help but listen. Study and take notes and your set. She's an excellent teacher. Take her if you want to get a good grade and if you want to truelly be educated.
definitely would not recommend..she is very unclear and is not very understanding.. the material is difficult and there were always random pop quizzes
This teacher is excellent! You are required to read and do work (dah, thats college!) but you learn so much. She is very pationate about what she teaches and is very knowledgable about her area of expertise. She will help you anytime, with work or personal problems, and also gives great study guides. I plan on taking ALL of the courses she teaches!
she's freakin awesome! so unbelievably smart and enthusiastic. definitely take her class if you get the chance. it's not easy but it's very very interesting. if you pay attention in class and study you'll be fine.
If she's available take her.Shes not a hard teacher, but shes not easy either. Do the work and take notes and you should get at least a B. She is extremely intelligent and keeps the class interesting.
she is a nice teacher, sets up office hours before the exams for reviews. im a good student in all other classes but cant seem to do well/. her tests are tedious and difficult! def not a easy class
This is a very interesting class. you have to do the readings to do well. The tests are all essy but she gives you the questions beforehand. She is always avail for help and gives extra credit on all tests. i like the class and her. i learned a lot.
she is so nice and helpful but her tests are a ****! all essay and she's very critical.
Very good teacher, really knowledgeable on the topics. High expectations for students, tests are hard, but she gives lots of extra credit opportunities. I really enjoyed the class!
Don't take if you are looking for an easy class. Lots of reading, essay tests and class discussions. Hsve to be prepared for class. Teacher is extremely nice and passionate about the topic. Loved her. Made me want to come to class.
Dr. Foster is beyond wonderful! She is not easy but we are in college!...I absoultly loved her and make frequent visits to her office just to say "hi"...she influenced me and made Sociology so interesting..Test are very hard..if your up for a challenge and want to have a great experience...TAKE HER!
Prof Foster is the best.. but be prepared to work. You HAVE to do the readings and participate in class.. and prep for her essay tests.. but she really makes you see the world differently. I don't regret this class at all.. she's an amazing woman - she barely even uses notes to teach her classes- she knows her stuff!! def receommend her!
she reall yis nice and knows her stuff. She's not crazy, dont listen to the other people. you HAVE to study like a maniac for her tests though. If you want to work at a real college level...cuz you know the others a re a joke, take this class
Dr. Foster is a real professor... if you want to get the most out of a college class take her.. yeah you have to read, pay attention and take tests.. big deal. she is clear and explains everything she is saying. she is the most knowledgeable professor i have ever had at monmouth and she taught me more in one class then i have learned in 5 of my maj
She is a tough professor, but a good one. You will come out of her class knowing something. There is A LOT of reading, a few tests and a paper. Her tests are hard, but if you READ and take notes you will be fine. She likes everyone to participate, so be prepared to be called on. I wanted to drop the class, but I wound up doing very well.
she is a great teacher. the class can be a little over whelming but if you work hard and read the required reading you will do well. The tests are essay tests so you have to study but you will leran alot in this class and do well if you put effort into it.
Oh my goodness, Prof. Foster is awesome! Yeah, you have to keep up on reading and go to class, but she knows her****! You walk out of her class knowing more than you will probably learn your entire career at MU. If you have a chance, take her class.
An amazingly talented professor whose passion for the subject is contagious. Be prepared to actually think and work in a college class (go figure) because she does expect college level work and comprehension. If you need help, she warns you to get it early and often.Everything she demands of her students is mapped out in the syllabus from day one.
Prepare to work extremely hard. ALWAYS READ! Very interesting woman but the material can be offensive to men. Three essay exams a final and three papers. OUTLINE YOUR ESSAYS EARLY STUDY. Take good notes, it's all lecture. If you aren't willing to work hard drop it. Calls on you a lot so do your reading. Hard, but fair. Interesting class though.
Be prepared to work your butt off. Even though I had to withdraw from her class, I suggest people take it. It's very hard, but you will be fascinated by every word that comes out of her mouth. I now can tell everyone anything they want to know about gender studies.
Really tough. Assigns a lot of reading and expects you to learn a ton of information and statistics for the essay exams. Also a tough grader. But really enthusiastic about the subject and you will learn a lot.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Very hard, you will take hours to do the flashcards for hw and you will end up getting zeros and not even getting any credit. Exams are impossible and a very hard grader. If you have her switch it before its too late!
Dr. Foster is so passionate about her work and it shows. She got me really interested in the rights and treatment of women (I had her for Women's Studies). She's a little on the tough side but as long as you keep up with her readings and take notes you'll be okay. She's also very willing to help you if you have any problems outside the classroom.
Take her>>This professor is great. She really cares about the students' doing well. She is helpful. The classes are so interesting. Best professor in Bey hall
Be prepared to do a lot of reading, but its all for a purpose. She's a great teacher, and even though you might work harder than the average intro to soc class I'd recommend her if you actually want to be interested in what you're talking about. Great lady if you get to know her despite her no nonsense demeanor, and she's always willing to help.
Took her for an Intro class & worked my butt off with readings, always participated in class discussions, and I did well on all exams and papers and she still gave me a B when I deserved an A. Very biased and gets angry when you have a different take on the readings than she does- Shows Favoritism and is difficult. Do not take her!
I've been out of college for some time...I still say till this day that this professor taught me more than any other professor I have had hands down blew away any prof from my field of sw.her knowledge base is astounding..she makes you work but her teachings are practical and are used daily....great passion true inspiration 4strong females
DO NOT TAKE. Good teacher with warped workload standards/ expectations. Only take if you are a subtle masochist and it is the only course you are taking.
Dr. Foster is by far the most incredible professor I have ever had. I had her for intro to Soc, and whereas I did not expect such a work load for an entry level class, she made the content interesting. She is the reason why I am pursuing Sociology in my graduate studies!
Do not take her if you expect to slack off. She requires and expects that you will do the large amount of work she assigns. She's a good teacher but very stern. If you participate and actually try she'll like you and you'll do fine.
Best professor I've ever had! The way she teaches the class moves me every time and makes be want to change my major to sociology! I wish she can teach all my other courses! The workload is not even bad she just wants you to do readings for HW and fill a small note card with questions. SHES SUPER COOL!
Dr. Foster changed me life! Since her SO100 class, I changed my minor to Soc. She is truly an inspiring professor with such a high command of knowledge for her field. She's brilliant and if you want to actually learn something worth learning, please take her class.
What a great Professor! Her workload is a little heavy, but totally worth it! I took just to fulfill a requirement, and now I am taking more gender study classes because of her. So nice and super helpful!
She is an amazing professor, really knows her stuff. The work load is heavy and you have to read or else you won't understand a thing and do horrible on the tests. But it's worth it to take her if you really want to expand your knowledge. She changed my aspect on everything! One of the best professors I've had
Professor Foster is an absolutely incredible teacher. She is tough, and expects the best out of every student. She is very knowledgable and the class will change your life. The very first day of class she seems intimidating, but always has her office door open for help in anything you need. You MUST keep up with the readings.
Prof. Foster is an awesome teacher. She expects the best out of her students, so the class is challenging. You MUST read the texts she assigns or else you won't understand what she teaches in class. The workload is heavy so if you want to slack off, don't take her. Her tests are essay exams. You study 10 essays, she picks 6, & you pick 3.
This lady really knows her stuff, there's no denying her that. But, if you're like me and just taking Gender Studies to knock out the CD requirement..AVOID. The work load is crazy for a 200 level course and all of her test are essay based (which she does not grade lightly) Only take her if you're actually into this stuff.
Very knowledgeable but VERY VERY tough grader. You think you did well on her essay exam? Think again. Treats this 200 level course as if it is a masters or PhD level course. I've done better in calculus and statistics than this class. Take ALAN FOSTER not JOHANNA. She seems great but will turn out to be your worst nightmare. HUGE FEMINIST
AWESOME teacher when you're up for the challenge. She is tough grader but if you're willing to work at the class then you will learn a lot and excel in this class. Lots of reading for homework and exam are semi hard.
avoid at all cost. she is the hardest grader and her essay tests are ridiculously hard to study for.
After getting to know her I can say that Dr. Foster is an amazing person. Her course is difficult, unlike almost every other professor at MU she actually makes you work - and that's a good thing. It was a welcome challenge, and because of that, I learned a lot. If you're just looking for an easy grade find another professor.
How she deals with tardiness is Very discouraging. She outright embarrasses you and lectures like a banshee. I don't get how I could study so intensely before her exams and feel so blank when to take it. Oh! Probably because she attempts to make you practically memorize cases scenarios and stats and terms for 10 possible essay questions!...
An average of three readings are assigned each class. Pop reading checks are frequent and class discussion is all about the reading so you literally can't miss any of them. Super hard grader, expects perfection.
Dr. Foster is definitely a tough professor. She gives huge reading loads and expects you to be able to comment on everything. She is no holds barred. However, she is the greatest professor I have ever taken. If you love Sociology, she's the professor for you. She is clear and takes you in all sorts of directions. I highly recommend her.
She's tough there's no denying that. She makes you really work for your grades but honestly I've learned so much from her classes & she's one of the only profs. who's classes really stuck with me & i remember things from it. She's always willing to help
This class is based entirely out of the textbook. The student is expected to read and then go to class to listen to her reiterate the same material, which is extremely dull. She doesn't have an attendance policy but you will never pass if you don't attend class. Her essays are LONG as well as her exams (in-class essays). I would not recommended her
She is an incredible professor; however, she is not for the faint of heart. If you diligently reading, taking notes, and go to her office hours, you will be fine. If you are interested in Sociology, TAKE HER. Her class inspired me to take a minor in sociology. If you are looking for an easy A, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It's very difficult.
Really great teacher would love to take he again.
Prof Foster is my favorite professor so far. Her class is a lot of work and is in no way an easy A. But the material is intriguing and she shows a passion for it in her lectures. I hate reading but I loved reading for this class. The textbooks are interesting. She occasionally gives pop quizzes and her tests are essays. Great class for SO majors.
If you put in the effort, she will help you. Learned a lot.
Professor Foster is an amazing professor who knows her stuff. You will read A LOT & have pop-quizzes. There are three exams in this class where you get a list of 10 possible essay questions a week before the test, on the day of she picks 6 & puts them into three sets of twos & you pick one from each and write 3 essays. This is no easy A
Someone please explain to me how I could take Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy and this be my hardest class AS AN INTRO GEN ED COURSE. There were 3 major exams that are all essay questions and I received the same grade on all 3 after studying all the material for days and staying on top of the readings. Class ruined my GPA so thanks for that
She assigns A LOT of reading and sometimes gives pop quizzes on the readings. Exams are in class essays and she gives potential essay prompts a week prior.
Amazing prof in her knowledge. However, this class is more work than all of my other classes COMBINED. Reading (min 2 usually) due every class, and if you don't read, you won't pass. I wouldn't recommend if you plan on slacking off. She is super sweet and funny, but lecture heavy is an understatement. Interesting material, but so much work.
Avoid taking this professor at all costs. Unless you're a sociology major, she won't grade you fairly at all. She refuses to discuss grades with you at the end of the semester and you'll end up with an unfair grade that she probably won't even be able to explain herself. Tough grader for an entry level course.
The syllabus had more red flags than North Korea. There are no phones or laptops allowed (in 2019, for that matter), the list of "reasonable" absences if far too narrow, she assumes every student of hers is full-time (completely disregarding part-time/commuter students), and she looks down on students who don't regularly read in their spare time.
Dr. Foster is one of the most amazing people that I have met! Her love for Sociology and teaching students the topics on agenda go hand in hand. I really learned a lot from her class, especially readings and lectures. Though, for in intro level class the demands are quite high, but you will definitely learn from her.
Very tough professor and class for a first year seminar, but definitely learned a lot. Very interesting material and good, engaging lectures. Tough grader with lots of homework and readings, so you just need to be ready to work and then you'll do fine. Cares about her students and passionate about what she does. Always available to go to.
Dr. Foster is really a well rounded woman. She is very passionate in the subject and really makes you think. Although, my biggest issue with the class is that an INTRO (101) class should not be more difficult than my 300 level health/science classes.
PAY ATTENTION DURING LECTURES! She loves to talk about what shes teaching, DO NOT expect to use electronics or leave during class, if you want to learn take her! When she sends you the study guide for the exam DO THEM, and you will pass with a grade you desire. Very easy to talk to. Extremely knowledgeable, but one sided with her thoughts.
Dr. Foster is the best!!!
Dr. Foster is the best professor I have taken so far at Monmouth. She truly cares about her students and is very passionate about what she is teaching. I would recommend this professor to anyone!
Lets be real, this class was the most work Ive had in the semester. Yes, she was a good n interesting professor but the amount of reading n assignments in the beginning of the semester was insane. Liberal view of economic inequality but she doesnt talk about Trump which is good. Offers EC, 2exams that have essay formats, 1 interview, 2 film reviews
Extremely tough grader. There was a lot of readings from the textbook and other online articles. There were two test. Each test you had to write 3 essays. But extra credit was offered. Dont recommend the class unless you need to take it.
I ended up with a B+ after the hardest class of my life. I put so much effort into all my assignments Idk how I ended up with a low grade .. I always get As. She is interesting and nice yes.. but holy cow get ready to read and memorize for tests. Get ready for interviews, budget assignments, film reviews, and 2 events that you attend.
I do not recommend taking this class unless you really have to. If you don't like reading this class IS NOT for you. No phones or computers, and could not go to the bathroom.... Believes her class is the most important and being a nursing major it is not. I had a family emergency and all she cared about was trying to prove that I was lying.. awful.
Do NOT take her unless there is no other option. She doesn't care about anything but her assignments and her class. Doesn't care about family emergencies or anything outside of class. if you walk into class with an assignment 30 seconds late she wont grade it. Not a bad lecture to listen to, very engaging...but good luck trying to pass her grading.
Attendance is very mandatory, only gives 3 exams whole semester no other assignments to balance your grade out. Super inconsiderate.
Dr. Foster was one of the best professors at Monmouth. Cares for her students and wants them to do well. Easy to talk to. Expects a lot from students. As long as you read and take notes, you will be fine.
Someone in my class was hospitalized and was very sick and she had him take the exam the FIRST day he got back, at like 7am, and proceeded to give him like a 45 on it. Keep in mind, its not multiple choice or anything, she reads them and decides the grades. How much of a bad person do you have to be to do that. I hate her. Grading makes no sense.
A lot of reading and constantly sending emails about extra things to review before next class despite meeting twice a week. Zero flexibility and understanding! Nothing else matters but her class/assignments. This could have been an interesting class to enjoy learning but, it did not happen.
No doubt the hardest professor I've ever had. I never had to do so much work for a class. She was a very smart professor but unfortunately she just provided way too much information. She makes you read so much before every class (trust me you need to read). Her class consists of a midterm, final, one big project, and a couple 5 question quizzes.
So many students who have had to retake this course because of professors hard grading. Took her my freshman year fresh into college and received an F despite my communication and dedication. Will constantly send emails outside of class time for non important things. Save yourself the time and take a different professor or the online course.
Dr. Foster led the fight against students having access to their grades in a fair and timely manner and seeing her 1 star reviews, this makes perfect sense. When the student government tried to fix it, she denied them without even having a convo with them. Cares more about herself and her status than giving students a decent education
SHE IS ANTI STUDENT
