One great teacher! cool to the blue! thats hifi!
A good and interesting teacher. I learn so much in her class and she made me like painting and art pieces. Very knowledgeble and easy.
She is a great teacher.
Great teacher. Totally clear, incredibly smart, funny. Oh, and she is really into extra credit games and stuff so there is no excuse for not doing well.
Excellent teacher. One of the very best at SJSU. I hear 100W is actually FUN with her. How is that possible??
she is smart, speaks and answer Qs very fast and clearly, students may get more information in her class.
Every class was the same.....show slides of artwork and fall asleep. Still an easy class overall but very boring.
Very boring lecture but semi-easy grader and her tests are easy as long as you were paying attention in class.
She is a great teacher, very knowledgeable, understanding. Beside being a teacher, she is a great human being.
She is extremely passionate about the class that she teaches and knows a broad scope of information in a lot of areas. Very friendly and kind. Need to memorize a lot of information on images and the final is a filler but her exams questions are fair and straightforward.
Set up this class so that students get the most out of it. Lots of work, but she'll help if you're having trouble. Writing, group games, reading papers out loud. You get to know the rest of the class. First few assignments were too philosophical, some of the reading is unnecessarily convoluted.
Its harder than you think.
She's a really easy professor if you study what she teaches you. I'm so stupid for not studying. Nice professor. =]
Very interesting and briliant lady. One of the best art history teachers I have evr had
No Comments
I had her for five classes. She is certainly one of those best teachers you never hear about. She loves what she does, she knows her stuff, and she is the sweetest!!!
By far one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. 5 essays (all of them no more than 3 pages MAX), a group presentation (easy), and a "final surprise". THATS IT. If you are looking for a 100W that's a breeze, stop here! She is SO NICE, SOOO EASY, you do learn...mostly grammar rules that you already know. Class flies by (only 1hr.) "easy A" here!
Out of all the other 100w classes I've heard about, this one sounds the easiest. No tests. But there is a lot of writing. Journals and papers. But until the last few weeks of the semester everything is for credit. There are 3 or 4 graded assignments. All in all I enjoy her class, and would recomend her.
Easiest Class Ever. After taking 1A & 1B, they make it sound like this level of English will be intense, but she makes the class fun & VERRRRY EASY. No Tests. No Quizzes. You write several essays (all out of class) but they only have to be 2-3 pages max. If you can sit down and write up a paper without any troubles, this class will be a BREEEZE! A+
I took 2 classes with her, and yes she is tough. She talks really fast, and she covers a lot of things in one session. I took Islamic Art Hist and Egy/Mes Art Hist. I really recommend taking her Islamic Art Hist class. It blew my mind. And again, it is tough, but very interesting.
Two of the best art history classes I've taken. I was surprised to be so motivated to do well. There is no reason to do badly in her classes, as she provides all the info you need to pass her tests and gives extra credit. You'll need to be a decent writer, too. Very awesome lady. Her enthusiasm for the subject is much appreciated.
She is a wonderful art history teacher. very helpful, good to motivate students, and knowledgeable.
The most difficult art history class i've ever taken. enough assignments for a full time class. 10 reading logs, 2 term papers, 6 quizzes and a final. If a quiz is coming up, she rushes the material even if its her fault for being behind.
BEST TEACHER EVER! SHE HELPS AND IS ALWAYS THERE TO CONSULT WITH. SHE WILL HELP YOU NO MATTER WHAT! THIS WOMAN IS A SAINT!!
She is cold. Even if you work your bottom of this class, she's quite tough to get through the class. I would not take her for this writing seminar.
Great teature. Although I am an international student, I got A. She gave us extra points for all assignments and highly estimate our writing organizational skills as well as English grammer. Also, I was not interested in this class, but she led me to paticipate in the class. I wish I would need to take her class again. Her talk always attracted me.
She is a wonderful professor!very clear in what she wants for the midterm and final.i had the pleasure of taking her class for winter session and even though the class was 3.5 hrs long, she always let us out a bit early and was easy to listen to during the lecture(didnt make me want to fall asleep).she is very passionate in what she teaches.
I thought she would be a tough teacher because someone said her 100W class was hard. But that was certainly not the case. Her lectures was very informative. As long as you keep up with the reading & listen to the points she makes on her lectures you'll be fine with the quizzes and test. Even the papers are not that hard. Her slide tests are easy.
I've have Prof Movassat for a number of courses. She definately one of those instructors who makes you think; tough but in a good way. Easy to talk to most definately. Study your note-cards! Easiest for 100W, but her Islamic course I found to be tough- everything sounded & looked the same, hard to study for. Passionate about art & her students.
Prof Movassat really intimidated me the first time I saw her... for some reason. It didnt take long for me to realize that she is one my favorite teachers. She makes you work hard... but dont fret she makes it interesting and gives MANY opportunities to make up with extra credit. Long live Movassat!
I cannot caution those looking into taking this class enough: unless you are highly proficient in rote memorization, and are extremely self motivated to learn the material, you will be in for a big surprise. Dr. Movassat is a brilliant, fair person, but her material is presented quickly, and her tests are not for the weak. You've been warned.
Very nice, but tough teacher. lectures first day and makes each student stand in front of the class and explain what they learned on the second day. essays are very specific, takes off points for little mistakes. take notes on lectures or you will not know what you are talking about and she will question you in front of class!!!
The class was supposed to be ArtHistory up to medieval times. Each time period was devoted a wk except for a chapter that was deeply routed in her religion,(and Egypt for obvious reasons)I felt that the course was taught biased due to religious beliefs. the final was also weighted heavily with the most?'s from the chapter based on her religion's art
Lots of memorization. No make up work available for missed quizzes and no late papers accepted. I was not expecting an entry level Art History class to have a professor who was a fan of memorization, but I think she's hard because most people wouldn't take it seriously otherwise. In short, I hated this class, it made me feel stupid daily.
If you want an easy class DO NOT take hers. Definitely the hardest class Ive taken at San Jose. Don't get me wrong, shes a very intelligent, nice woman, but the tests and workload is pretty ridiculous. Remember when you were in high school and thought that college was gonna be crazy hard and that you'd have to study all day? Yeah, thats her class.
She is a very nice lady. Her lectures are filled with a lot of information. Don't get too stressed with taking a lot of notes because her tests were based on discussion questions she hands out, and some slide identifications which she post on the website. She does talk fast in her lectures. Oral presentation and term paper are major assignments.
Not hard but definitly a lot of work. 5 Quizzes. 5 papers along with 2 other projects (going to a museum and essay on an in class video). Some EC opportunites. Must write well and in detail. Be prepared for a lot of work
Movassat is a great professor! She occasionally takes note of participation for grading. Included interesting guest lecturers. No book; required attendance of two cultural events. Unfortunately, none of this will matter to any future students--she won't be teaching CA 173 anymore =(! Consider her for art history, though! She really is great!
She is a sweetheart. Really loves teaching and it shows! Go to class an the lectures. The study guide is your ticket to good grades!!! Tons of extra credit available, i suggest doing it! Really a lovely lady... Oh and participate in class and she will LOVE you!
Very nice, a lot of homework and memorization, but as long as you listen to her tips for studying and commit yourself to assignments, you'll do just fine.
Awesome teacher. So helpful and sweet. Really cares about her students!!! Would take a class with her again anytime.
Really helpful teacher. Improved my writing a lot, very nice!
Don't take her class unless you are seriously interested in art history, and have enough knowledge about Sasanians. It's a complete waste of time for me (I'm an engineering major), and it's just way too much work for something completely useless.
really good teacher. Is enthusiastic, wants you to do well in the class, and gives you every oportunity to improve your essays/grade. very approachable, tells you exactly what she wants. i'd definitely take a class from her again
she is easy compare to the other professors. she gives about 20 slides to memorize instead of 100 like the other teachers.
She's a really nice lady and I can tell she really cares about her students. However, I wouldn't suggest taking this class unless you are an art major or know stuff about art. I'm a business major and often found myself lost, not because she was a bad teacher, but because I just didn't know anything about art.
She speaks rather quickly during lectures so taking notes is difficult. Also, her lectures aren't really important to what's going to be on the quiz since the quiz is basically just memorizing. A lot of work and time for this class and still hard to get a good grade.
Dr. Movassat is a great teacher and a person. Unlike other art history professors, she focus on critical thinking through short essays and one formal essay instead of focusing on hundreds of slides. As long as you prepare for tests, you'll do well.
Practically requires that you have prerequisite knowledge of art history, since 90% of the things she says you won't be able to spell in your notes. It's good to do the online readings, and always study for tests. She's a very kind and helpful lady, and loves it when you go to her office hours (plus you get participation points).
Great professor. She is very friendly and kind. Her lectures are interesting if you're interested in art history. Very easy tests - she tells you everything you'll need to study. One research paper and a few worksheet questions. Easy class!
Great class. It was my favorite class of the semester. She creates a friendly and close environment. The essays helped my writing a lot and they were simple to do. The finals were fun - a group holds a creative presentation and we ended up playing lots of games during the finals. Moderate reading. Take this class for 100W. You won't regret it!
She knows her stuff, but compared to other Art History teachers; both upper and lower division, her class is the hardest! Way too hard for lower division. Lots of memorization, and spelling also counts!
Shes a great instructor. Always available to help. Very clear on whats expected. Basically she wants to see some effort out of people. If you think this class was too hard then you wont succeed in any Upper Division Art history. It was a joy to be in her class
A rather nice and knowledgeable teacher, helpful and appreciative of visitors to her office hours (which you get points for). Goes through a lot of material during class, so you have to read the textbook and articles to fill in the gaps. Study for the quizzes and don't bs the term paper (use flashcards!); they're a big part of your grade.
This class is ridiculous. It is passable, but the teacher acts like it's some kind of honors class. It's a damn GE class for godsakes. Ridiculous amounts of memorization, and she's extremely rude and picky. Will mark you off points for simple things, so you have to be exact. This class causes more stress than necessary. Avoid this teacher.
She is very demanding. giving nearly 40 pictures to study only testing on 5. she also includes vocab and essays on top of that. When she gives tests she epects perfect spelling of EVERYTHING... its not only studying Art, Artists and styles, but trying to memorize some of these other things you need to know, it feels like studying a foreign language
I took Humanities 1A seminar with her and she is quite the amazing, kind, and passionate teacher. Yes there are a few papers and some quizzes but the quizzes are to help you to prep for the final because the quizzes become great study materials. She does more prep for the mid and final exams than others so you're pretty lucky to have her for HUM 1A
This teacher is horrible, her final and essay's are extremely hard and have way too much information needed. She also plays favorites in the class so if you don't like art of are not an art history major do not take this class, you have to work hard to get a B in this class.
I thought for sure if that I was going to get a C, but I ended with a B- instead. I suppose compared to other ArtH classes, she really isn't that bad in terms of workload. Just get together with groups and study to study for your tests and you'll be fine. I could've gotten I higher grade if I didn't put my studio art classes first priority.
shes super nice and a great teacher. she does like a lot of examples for art, which can be hard, but showing up for class will be hugely important. she's a great teacher and most of our class wished she was their grandmother.
She is extremely intelligent, but I regret taking this class because this had absolutely nothing to do with my major, so I tried to put as little effort in as possible. Hopefully I'll end up with an A, considering I have done well on her exams, but it is difficult because 5 percent is participation. DO NOT take if you are not an art major.
Not the easiest teacher, but that's to be expected from a history class. Lots of memorization skills are required for the quizzes. There is no homework, which may be good or bad depending on how well you do on quizzes and essays. On the bright side, she has an adorable old lady personality that can potentially brighten up your day.
Excellent professor! She grades and returns everything back to you fairly quickly. She's a fair grader, very helpful, and genuinely cares about her students. She's extremely passionate about art/art history, you'll definitely learn a lot. Get a chance to know her a little if you can, her life's story should seriously be a book or documentary.
This is one of my favorite teachers. She expects alot, but she makes art history come alive. If you do your reading and participate you will do well. The tests are not easy but if you study you will be fine. she lets you know for the most part what the tests will be. After the first one you will know what to expect. Great if you like Art history!
awesome professor! so sweet and caring. highly recommend
This prof is very kind and polite. She cares a lot about students. She sometimes reminds me of my grandma. She's very passionate about art and have tremendous knowledge about it. Exams require lots of memorization but she will tell you what to expect. Highly recommend.
Very nice lady, but all her tests require SOO much memorization. Memorize around 30 slides with date title artist etc. a map with countries and cities, around 30 vocab words, and up to 5 essay questions. 1 paper, I turned mine in early for revision and she told me what to do and I still got a 75.
She is an awesome teacher, If u come to learn, with her u will. She is very helpful and gives u the tools to get an A, I did. Even though there is a lot to memorize, it is reachable. You should take her class. She make the class interesting and fun.
Professor has high expectations but is very willing to help those who make the effort. Majority of the grade relies on tests; be prepared to study a lot. She also wants you to speak in class so don't be shy! Professor is really nice and I learned a lot. Glad I took it!
Dr. Movassat is not an "Easy A" type of instructor but makes the material interesting and is very helpful outside of class hours. She is truly passionate about Eastern Art which shows through her lectures. Be prepared to read though because she does assign a fair amount of homework as well as prep for the tests.
Super sweet, super helpful, but just wanted to reiterate previous people in saying you have to memorize EVERYTHING she takes away points for what you dont have instead of giving you credit for what you have down. Many assignments are only worth 5 points so not much time to make up points
She is extremely passionate about what she does so it makes the class lively. She is a stickler about knowing everything, not sure I'll remember any of it after the class though. Hard grader but very helpful. Covers a lot and goes quickly, almost too fast. Probably one of the hardest classes I've taken so far. She is a lovely person though.
Bring your recorder to class every day! She goes really fast, doesn't repeat anything. Pretty vague on description of slides and assignments. Start early on term papers! Keep up with the readings! Overall, did not like her teaching stlye.
No books for this course, all reading was through online resources. I had a hard time finding the useful info in the readings. During class it was hard to know what was important and what was useless babble. You really do need a recorder in case you miss something while you write. I'd never failed an art course until hers.
PASSIONATE. She talks fast&expects you to memorize a lot. If you do the reading&take good notes, you should be fine. She is eager to help&very approachable in office hours. I miss the way she nods along smiling when you answer a question. She's a sweety! I didn't get a good grade but I have nothing bad to say about JM. Just be ready to work for it.
Dr. M is legit ! She is super nice, helpful and knows her history down to a T! Amazing teacher! I learned so much from her class and I now hear her sweet voice explaining art work and the pieces " connection". Tests were not hard at all she drops the lowest out of the 3 , 1 group project 2 papers less then 5 pages. Be ready to learn n be amazed!
Shes horrible.i've read all the comments on here and i dont agree with any of them She goes incredibly fast and doesn't stop , she tells you when a test is coming up a weeks head of time, which was fine, however the tests are incredibly difficult because the study guides she gives you have too much information and don't help you.
Terrible teacher. Everything she talks about in class isn't useful at all for her tests. Her tests are extremely long and full of memorization.
Each exam are very difficult and the study guides given prior are not very helpful. Intense amount of memorization required for this class.
The tests in this class were difficult and mainly about memorization of dates/names and not so much about the history behind the art. She gave me an F for participation even though I always showed up for class. This was her kiss up grade. If I hadn't shown up for class, I would have received the same grade.
Johanna definitely knows her stuff, but maybe too much. For a GE class, it's a very difficult class which she puts a lot of hard questions on the exams. And the exams are many! Do not take this class with her if you are just trying to get your GE done or just to have an easy class while working on your major which a lot of us were trying to do.
Not an easy class, she expects you to memorize about 5 or 6 details for about 40 paintings and uses a random 5 of them on tests. She grades essays hard but gives a useful opportunity to do a rough draft. If you just want to get the requirement done, TAKE A DIFFERENT CLASS! I managed to get a B-, the book is not necessary.
Horrible!!! I have had some amazing Art History professors that have drawn from all fields of study, but Movassat will not even acknowledge anything beyond the most simplistic explanations. If it isn't in Stockstad text, it doesn't exist. I am an Art History major and would recommend taking any class but this. She does NOT know her own subject.
What confuses me about random people commenting on here is their inability to distinguish between a tough class and a tough teacher. Dr. Movassat has taken a dense difficult subject and taught it using her kind and very approachable demeanor. She is a great teacher that will be there for you as long as you take her class seriously. Highly recommen
Memorization is key in this class. Be prepared to memorize a bunch of paintings and vocabulary to be able to answer only a few questions about it on the exam. Though you can easily skip lectures, it's helpful to be in class to learn about the art that will be on the exam because it may help on the essay questions. Not an easy A class.
I've been fortunate enough to have her for HUM 1A & HUM 2A . Not only does she know her stuff but she also gives really helpful life tips. Go to class and make an impression on her- she'll be there for you two years after you take her class. She's an amazing personprofessor and truly wants the best for her students.
Great, helpful teacher. Tests can be quite tough if you don't put in enough hours of studying.
W this course, there's too much content to be taught in one semester. JM manages to teach it all, but you need to WORK. A lot of memorizing. She's willing to help & clarify things, & she's nice, but this class is no joke. Best way to pass: STUDY HARD, take good notes, & talk to her. If she can't match name to face, then no participation points.
Unfortunately, this was the first class i ever failed:( Tests are VERY difficult, all free response & require memorization of dates, names, locations, etc of over 30+ paintings only to find a total of 5 on the test that you must know along with an essay question. Grade is based on these 3 midterms, a term paper & the final. DO NOT TAKE.
worst teacher I've ever had/met. Very rude and offensive to students. acts like it's high school and wont let u leave during class even to pee. said some messed up stuff about a past students weight. class should be based on essays/homework not tests. way too much memorization not enough learning this is coming from someone who got a good grade
I wish I could tag more than three.... This class is hard. She is a sweet person by appearances but for me, no matter how hard or how long or how much I studied, the best grade I got on a test was a C (and I was ecstatic). I will be lucky to pass this class with a C, and I hope I do, because I do NOT want to take any more ARTH... UGH.
The class is interesting and she's nice. I enjoy learning about each piece and even the back stories to some of the greatest works of art. Studying is tough, but she provides you with everything you need to study. It's all memorization, but it's possible. If you're failing, you aren't putting enough effort into studying.
If you like memorizing title, year, author, etc of an artwork then this class is for you, if not then I do not recommend taking this class. I took this class to cover one of the RSV & it was the worse decision ever. I would spend hours studying & would get a B/C on the exams. If you want to cover your upper GE you should take something else.
She is the most caring professor you could ever have! If you do the work and pay attention in class you will definitely pass. If you study each lecture hard you will definitely receive an A! I would take this class again and again if it means I get to hear her lectures and class discussions again.
Tough, but fair grader. She tells you exactly what you need to study for the tests. If you miss a lecture just email her and she will help you get the notes. If you show up to class and take notes, you should be fine.
She gives study guides a week before with all necessary info. no need to go to class, however it is recommended as the subject matter is interesting. get to know her, very nice lady.
Do not take this class. She is the worse professor ever. Lecture consists of paintings on a slide show that you will be tested on. She does not give a review for tests/exams until a few days before the exam. Tests 60+ paintings, 35+ vocab and 4 essay prompts that you must memorize. She does NOT teach a single thing all semester.
The teacher gives exams where you have to memorize more than 60 slides and 4 essay questions and 20 terms in 7-10 days. Too much! The class is about following directions explicitly and she grades the papers very hard. Too much work. Her homework took as long as the homework for my other three classes.
Movassat is a wonderful professor who teaches the part of history that is often omitted or brushed over in regular history classes. The ancient civilizations and their complex interactions and connections were eye opening. Taking this class was an amazing experience and I would definitely take a class with this instructor again.
Grade is based on 2 of 3 exams (lowest dropped), a final, and a paper. Recommended to do well on first two exams as they get harder. Exams based on extremely lengthy study guide. Pure memorization, and it's A LOT. Can pass without attending lecture, but textbook is necessary to pass because referencing the textbook is a requirement on every exam.
Professor Movassat is a gem. She was very clear from the beginning- you have to work in Hum Honors to get a good grade. She had amazing lectures and cohesive seminar discussions. Note her office hours are early, but she is there to help you so go if you need it. Her life story is amazing too, so ask! I would definitely take a class with her again.
She gives study guides before the exam, and you have to remember around 50+ paintings title, artists name, centuries, location and medium. Then, she only test 5 out of 50. Learn nothing from this class, spend all the time just to memorize those paintings and art terminology. Around 4 essay prompts, and only one of them will be on the exam.
She's tough, but nice, and no one knows more about the Silk Road. Fascinating subject and class lectures always interesting. SO MANY SLIDES to memorize though, and tons of assigned readings. Do your homework and speak up in class, and you'll do well. She offers extra credit.
DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! If you fail your first test then it is so difficult to get an A in the class. She requires you to memorize 50+ artworks for finals, which we will never use in our lifetime. I needed to prepare for the midterm study guide a week before the exam, but I still did not get an A. If you are good at memorizing, take this class.
As long as you go to the lectures, pay attention, and take good notes you're going to pass. There are assigned readings but they're not necessary to pass the class. Professor Movassat is very accessible and friendly if you need help. I also had her for honors humanities and she was great.
Dont take for GE credit. if its for your major, im so sorry. the only people getting an a are those with superb memorization skills. expects us to memorize 50+ images with author, century, medium, etc. must memorize 3 essay questions, and 30+ terms. lectures aren't helpful, you're just going to end up relying on textbook and internet.
She has very interesting lectures where she goes into detail about each painting and its story, thus sometimes you might find yourself fall asleep if you arent interested. I find the tests to be quite fair for Art history as long as you study, STUDYING IS A MUST for this class, its very easy to pass if you do.
If you have poor memorization skills, you're going to have a really hard time with this class. Please don't take this as a GE req. For each test, you have to memorize 30+ painting with extreme detail for each one, 20+ terms, and 4 essay questions for her to only choose 5 paintings, 3-4 terms, & 1 essay question (out of the two she gives you)
She's a sweet lady but extremely hard on tests. Over 50+ terms and paintings to memorize and no cheat sheets. If you're doing this for GE, rethink that. Unless you plan on having no social life or sleep trying to studying for this class, don't take it!!!!!!!!
Take this class if you love memorizing things and have a lot of time on your hands. You have to memorize 50+ art pieces/artists/styles etc in addition to 40+ vocabulary and 3 essay questions for the final only for her to put 5 of those on the actual exam. Your grade is dependent on three midterms, a final, and an essay.
Regardless of my grade, I didn't learn a single thing in Johanna Movassat's Renaissance to Modern art history class. The entire curriculum is based on the student being able to memorize art pieces from a list she gives a week before the exam, spanning between 30-70 images depending on the period.
one of the sweetest professors i've ever met. total mom and very passionate about what she does. she does expect a lot of knowledge about art pieces, but it's not too bad. she will go out of her way to help you succeed if you take the first step and ask! i love her so much. put effort into what you do and you'll go far in her class.
Very sweet lady; in-class subject is strictly lectures & your grade is dependent on 3 exams, 1 essay, and a final. Very hard to earn at least a B in the class with effort. I regret not studying more for the exams. In order to be successful in this class the key is to study. Textbook is mandatory, but I recommend splitting the cost w a friend.
Horrible teacher. When will teachers learn that memorization does not equal learning? this should NOT be a GE class, my 5 friends and I studied for a week together spending sleepless nights in the library for the final and I got the highest grade at a 75%. Unfortunately I HAD to take this class but this class should only be for AH majors.
I took her art history class for my GE. She expects you to memorize over 70 arts (including the artist, year, location, etc) for the exam... I studied pretty hard for this class, yet I was only able to get a B+. If you are an art major, then it might help you. Other than that don't even consider taking her class. It is a waste of your time.
Professor Movassat is passionate about Art and helps you visualize large concepts you could have missed by just viewing the Art. I appreciated her in depth art history lectures and I could imagine myself in the era.
as a lot of the other reviews state, this class is based on memorization and your ability to follow rules. I didn't learn a single thing and was turned off to art history because of this class. this should not be a GE course and if you're required to take it i'm sorry.
