She's not a real prpofessor, she's just a discussion leader, sort of like a TA. She's BORING! You wont have much of a choice, just be prepared for the fat, older woman who is really nice one-on-one, but a very boring person in front of the class. Waste of money!
She's the worst possible TA. There're only 2 TAs for this course, so take the other guy. She's quite fair with her marking though, but she gets really boring in class and talks about her son alot. Requires you to sign in every class.
Jody is very kind and helpful, she's not too hard of a grader.
Pretty helpful with hw and clarifying concepts. A fair professor. Do much of the teaching for Coombs. Approachable. Go to her for help.
Take the other discussion professor. Jody is nice, but she grades harder than the other discussion prof. What is a 100 in the other class will be a 94 in hers because she cares about font size and other stupid stuff. Just take the other one. Its more fun, anyway.
Avoid if possible. Not an easy TA, goes off topic. Take Bresnahan instead - clearer presenter/fair grader. He'll prepare you well for the department final.
I think Jody was a pretty good discussion leader, but I think she may be a slightly harder grader than Bresnahan. Regardless, they're pretty much the same and Jody is very knowledgeable on the subject matter and uses good examples. She really cares about her role as a teacher and works hard to teach her students.
Jody is a great TA. I recommend that you go to her office hours and ask her questions. She is not only very helpful, but participation is a large part of your grade and she is also the one that grades your tests. To get an A in the class you must take book notes and take good online notes (practically verbatim). The tests are about 80% from online
Continued..15-20% that is only found in the book will be the difference maker between A's and B's. Definitions on tests will come from the book (25 MC) and 6 short answer questions for midterms (5-6 will come from online lecture), occasional discussion or book short answer.
Probably one of the nicest Ta's ever... very friendly and understanding... allows to submit homework assignments late.... can visit her during office hours.. overall very nice!
She is very nice. She will help you in any possible way and if you speak up in class she will give you a good grade.
Jody is a really nice lady who knows a lot. The class material is extremely boring, but make an effort to get to know her and ask her to look over any study-guides you make for her input... the class is a pain, but if you memorize everything, you will be fine
Extremely nice woman. She's really helpful and approachable. The lectures and discussions are pretty boring, but she understands that and is able to sympathize with the students.
She's is really the best TA and super understanding. She's sympathetic to all situations and what we go through. Tries to make the discussion more interesting since the entire class pretty much is textbook.
Class is boring. attendance is mandatory. Take Chris. Chris is more interesting and easy-going than Jody.
she said wts on the exam, you will never find them on your actual exam.. be sure you study every single word in your textbook before you take your exam.
Jody is a good person and really means well. Does a pretty good job considering she has so many sections. The class and labs are somewhat laid back and enjoyable....however, studying for the tests is an absolute NIGHTMARE. Literally must memorize EVERY SINGLE THING. You won't get the score you want unless you can recite any slide VERBATIM.
This class sucks and there is a lot of BS reading. But Jody is a good professor; the class itself just blows. You really need to be prepared to know everything on powerpoint slides.
Tolan is good. Recommend. The class is not about Tolan or your lecturer though. It is beyond their powers. It is video lectures and the textbook that shall decide your fate.
Jody is personable and helpful, but the class itself is ridiculous. Memorize as much as possible and you'll do average in the class. Very frustrating. Jody is a pretty good TA, but it's impossible to make the class tolerable.
Jody's a great TA (very helpful, sweet, and accommodating), but the course is horrible in itself. They value memorization over understanding the material since that's how the midterms were. Discussion was okay, lectures and online lectures were extremely boring.
She is a wonderful TA, very lively witty even for a 8am friday class. She is one of those TAs who relates to the students - always there to help and never talk down to them. Class itself is horrible, HW & case studies are easy but Exams are "mind sodomizers". Must memorize 4+ chapters, 60+ ppt slides VERBATIM and still get a B. Memorize everything!
She's SO nice. Really helpful and approachable. Kind and willing to help out students who are interested in learning. Choose her as the TA
First off, Jody is a nice person, and she means well. However, this class is more than ridiculous. The best way to be successful is to literally, and do not take this lightly, memorize every slide of every online and discussion powerpoints word for word. Do not waste your thought, effort, or time into anything else.
Tolan is so kind. She stayed over office hours when many students had questions about the class. The class itself consists of a lot of memorization so be prepared for that. Also, take advantage of Tolan because she is honestly there to help you.
Very nice person. Amazing at discussing material and guiding students towards preparing for the exam. However, she is the hardest grader I have ever had. Unnecessarily cuts marks off. She looks for very specific things and if they are missing then you will probably get a C at best. My class has 4 kids fail by the 2nd mid term.
discussion TA, strongly recommended. very clear on objectives and what to know about. what she discusses in class is usually what's important and what's on the exams. very nice person, tries to stimulate class interests, fun personality, interesting activities. so much more helpful and useful than the original, boring 304 lecture class. take her!
Tolan is knid and helpful, but to get full mark in the exams you need toname the concept and apply it presicely.Prepare for a lot of memorization. I got A on this course but i did spend time on it. Lecture is not important, only been there 2 times the whole semester. Be sure to remember everything in the powerpoint of video pecture
She is an extremely kind professor who cares a lot about her students. Out of all the T/A's take her. She will try her best to help you. The format of 304 is a different story. The teachers are not the issue, the tests force you to memorize and scrutinize over small details. If you take 304 be prepared to memorize every powerpoint slide.
She's really nice and very helpful. Everyone always gets 5s on the hw, so focus on the midterms, final, and big group project. Attendance is really important so always go to lec, discussion, and elc's (that helped my grade a lot). Basically memorize the video lectures and discussion slides to do well on exams. Lecture prof doesn't matter for grade.
Pure memorization
Professor was very helpful and wanted students to do well. Attendance is necessary. Just memorize everything for tests.
This class is pure memorization and the only things that are important are video lectures. Lectures had a lot of wasted time. The concepts in the class were kind of interesting. Tolan really does care about what she teaches but it is hard to feel her passion without exposure to the topic she presents
Professor Tolan is a great professor. She's clear with what she wants the students to learn for the exams (which are purely memorizing the slides and some parts of the textbook) but if you go to her office hours, she'll be a great help. Great class overall!
Amazing teacher; there for you, provides great feedback. Participation is a sine-qua-non; a significant part of your grade. Midterm is worth 10% so you could fail it and still get an A.
All that matters is memorizing the slides on the video lectures. She grades with a check list looking for specific words. Worst class I've ever taken... Do not recommend (but it is required so hard to get away from it). Class participation does not matter. Critical thinking does not matter. All that matters is memorizing the slides.
The class is based on pure memorization. Regardless, you're going to have to take this class if you're in Marshall. She's a very nice lady and really helps guide you through everything, but it's honestly just all memorization. Get ready to do lots of assignments and watch video lectures.
Unsure where the reviews about participation not mattering are coming from, participation is literally 30% of your grade, half of which is decided by how often you speak up in class. If you actually understand the concepts without memorizing slides, you'll be better off than just memorizing in my opinion. Loved her - funny and very clearhelpful
Professor Tolan is a very nice person. Her discussion and the ELC activities are really fun. The lectures are useless and long. Watch the online videos will be enough. Tests are all about memorization and memorization.
How you do in her class is all dependent on your participation and the group you are assigned to. If Tolan remembers your face AND your name (go to office hoursspeak in class) then you'll get an A. She is an easy grader, just use a lot of vocabulary in your case studies and final. Memorize the vocab and terms and you are set in this class.
She is a nice person, but not the best teacher. If you can I would recommend taking another professor. She never responds to emails, so if you have question go in and talk to her instead of emailing her.
Tolan is interesting. Get on her good side and work hard, you're golden. The lectures are useless, discussion is helpful. Learning terms & concepts is better than memorizing. I didn't watch the videos and barely skimmed readings, got an A because of lots of participation and paying attention. Make sure you don't end up with lazy group attitude
A good majority of the class comes down to one group project, if you go to Tolan's office hours you will get good grades on the homework and tests. Class isn't too hard.
Your grade will depend on your participation level and whether or not you get a good group. Her lectures are long and boring, and she is bad at responding to emails. Ironically, the class is very disorganized. She is one of the better 304 TA's, so I would recommend her.
Puts so much effort into teaching and it shows - I thought she made the topic super interesting even though inherently it really isn't in my opinion. Participation matters a lot, homework and group projects tend to be about the same gradewise for everyone with some outliers so the two tests and participation will decide most of your grade.
Professor Tolan is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable there is in the Marshall School of Business. Clear passion for what she does, and a desire to see her students succeed. Both in LINC and in 304. Had the pleasure of traveling with her to Budapest for LINC, and walked away glad I did not have any other professor as the lead.
She's the sweetest but the class is worthless. It's easy but stupid. Regardless, you're gonna have to take this class to get your degree. Make sure to always participate and not underestimate your midterm and final. (I have nothing too bad to say about her but just about everything on the usefulness of this class)
Bad experience. Takes forever to grade assignments. How can you look to improve for your exams when you don't get your homework back until after the exam day? Discussions seemed more like a free for all to talk about anything you wanted. Overall, very unhelpful discussion section.
Had an A all semester somehow finished with a B because of the curve, this course is completely useless. Tolan is pretty average
THIS PROFESSOR RUINS the class. Beware of being in a bad group! If you get a poor peer review it will ruin your grade. I had a solid B all semester, but she gave me a C. I have a 3.8 GPA, did all of the work, actively participated in every class, have life experience as a manager, and have NEVER had a problem working with others. Horrible Prof!!
The only thing I enjoyed in this class was Tolan. Not because she's great at teaching- it's unorganized & her grading really is unfair - but because the class itself is so stupid, anything but "real world" useless, that Tolan's sweet personality made me at least like her as a person. Waste of my tuition money, but hey that's the educational system.
Professor Tolan genuinely cares about her students. Get ready to memorize for this class. If you watch the video lectures and actually do the work and contribute to group assignments, you'll be fine. It takes dedication and commitment, but its not impossible. All 304 classes are like this, and Professor Tolan is there always available to help you.
Tolan is a sweet lady but her grading is completely subjective. The content you learn is really simple in this class and you can have an A till the final, but be warned, nothing is set in stone. The participation grade she gives you is biased and constitutes a huge part of your grade. Feedback was also extremely slow. Get ready to wait for months.
Nice lady, will help you if you go see her. Content is big but pretty much straight forward. Assignments every week, class is time consuming. Not that hard to get a good grade. Feedback is slow and gradings are somehow strange (based on midterm final and paper) even though only represent 50% of class. Attendance is crucial.
Very sweet and she explains things very clearly. But the class is a joke. The midterm and final cover the most bizarre, irrelevant concepts. She is unclear about what will be on the exams and it screws you over. Also, you can get an A on everything all semester, but get a B because of peer evals and the HUGE curve put on the class. Unfair grading.
Fun professor but the class itself is ridiculously boring. Talks a lot. The class itself requires a lot of lecture watching/reading, and while it seems okay for class to skip the reading, you definitely need it for the midterm and final. Grading is pretty straightforward, just use as many terms as possible. Participation is important!
If you show up, do ur work, the highest you will get is a B. This class is completely curved. DONT BE FOOLED that this class has 'minimal work'. Ur peers in your group grade you and everyone is fighting for the better grade in the group, so they are not encouraged to rate you well. Not only that, Tolan ENCOURAGES you rate your peers low and poorly.
Textbook use? If you dont quote your text book word. for. word on the test you wont get a good grade. this class is pointless because its all straight memorization. if you use a synonym of a word when you are answering on a test, they deduct you points. the whole grading system is absurd in this course and Tolan does not help her students at all.
Ppl @USC love to talk about 304. Some say it's the easiest class, some say it's super hard. Honestly you can't listen to any of them, its a required class, just take it and have your own experience. As for Tolan she is super nice and friendly. Lazy grader so some lag time on assignments but in class explains everything and available in office hours
Prof Tolan was very nice, but this course was structured poorly. You'll have to teach yourself everything. I found the weekly discussion sections to be pointless, and the biweekly lectures don't cover material until after the corresponding assignments are due. Grading was slow. Expectations are unclear. I'm not a fan of this class.
It's not a hard material and the overall class is boring. Exams are hard though with little guidance on how to do well.
The professor has a clear political agenda, and if you disagree with her at all your grade will be damaged. The course reader is busy work, and fails to address relevant topics in current business climate, even though it is very expensive. The teacher is very pretentious, picks favorites, and has little industry experience. Stay away if you can.
Professor Tolan is nice but she's pretty strict on grading and is probably the toughest grader for 304. That being said, I did learn a lot of concepts and overall did fine in the class because the powerpoints were good. Pray that you get a good team, bc a lot of your grade is based on peer reviews.
This is a very inspirational class. Even if you try not to pay attention to the subject it gets very personal and you will learn so much from yourself through various personal assessments (personality, communicative, etc). Case readings mandatory, rest is up to really whether you want to read or not. Very inspirational professor and class.
Jody comes off as a nice person at first. Dont be fooled! She is judging you and picking her favorites from the first minute of the class. The course is tough because your encouraged to peer evaluate negatively in order to boost your own grade. Jody wants there to be a poorly rated participant in the group every time, even if you all work evenly.
Meh. If you get a good group this class is fine but otherwise it'll suck. Seems nice at first, but she's a lazy grader and gives a lot of useless crap for homework. Quoting stuff from the textbook works well, that's just the nature of psychology classes. Tons of homework, make sure you turn it in even if it sucks. Tight curve.
She takes forever to grade homework assignments and tests, and the feedbacks are not useful at all. She asked students to tear each other apart in peer evals (Why???). Her lectures are super boring, and she grades you for your participation. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Do not take this class with Tolan. She wastes time during discussion with pointless activities like "finding 5 pictures that display leadership" and other irrelevant stuff like that. After barely learning any new material in discussion, we are expected to do hours of weekly assignments. Her grading is wack and takes a super long time to return work
You need to go to lecture but can just self study the course content. Lectures are boring, and attendance is checked. I personally wouldnt recommend this professor; however, I heard other 304 professors were worse. In tests, be sure to define all the relevant vocabulary words first before answering the questions if you want a good grade.
Prof. Tolan is the most unclear professor I've had. From the first day of class she was unclear of what she expected of her students. Also, she does not give you an idea of where you're standing in the class. I received a 95 on the midterm and received full credit on all HW assignments; however, peer evaluations and participation destroyed my grade
She's a really nice and helpful lady, but is super vague and won't tell you what to study or how to study. The class is completely unclear. Assignments are confusing and what is expected of you isn't clear. Nobody gets As - the class is on a tight curve and nobody knows why they got what they got. She grades the project super hard and peer evals :(
This professor is one that I would STRONGLY NOT RECOMMEND. She takes a very long time to grade things, and encourages your peers to grade you poorly which causes all students to receive lower grades. She goes off on useless tangents in class which are a waste of time, and routinely arrives to class tardy even though the class requires attendance.
So much work. Highest grade she gives to the class is always somewhere in the 80s. Mandatory attendance. lots of reading. Do not take her class.
Lots of people are taking it out on Tolan, but I feel its Marshall that makes this class more difficult than it needs to be. This class felt so standardized that it was impossible to enjoy. She is occasionally late and discussion session w/ her was a complete waste of time. They are changing the format of the class and I hope they fix it!
304 as a whole is heavily dependant on the people that you have in your team. The best way to describe Tolan is "eh". She is disorganized when it comes to grading and unclear on her grading criteria. If you stay on top of it, and constantly check the syllabus for assignments that are due, then you will be ok.
304 is a hard class all around; you can easily get a B with just minimal effort, but if you want an A in Tolan's class, you CAN: put in the work/memorize theories, go to office hours/participate occasionally, and get on her good side. However, your success pretty much depends on how you handle the group project and if you can motivate others too.
If you want an A, you will have to put in the work. Don't expect it to be easy, but in all honesty, her exams are not as hard as people say. If you study one full night before the midterm/final, you will nearly for sure get an A. Participate, go to office hours, and be a nice person. She's a sweet and nice lady always willing to help. OH are great!
She is the worst person I have ever met in my entire life. I was in her linc class and I have never met anyone more rude or inconsiderate of people younger than her own age.
Tests were unnecessarily hard. group project was alright if your group was alright. lectures will put you to sleep, which is unfortunate considering your grade depends on you being an active participator. you gotta do the readings at least before the tests, and they are not fun
This is the worst class I have ever in my entire life. Work hard and you won't get a good grade still. She is unrespectful to students. She is a tough grader and her tests are much harder than her lectures. Group work is redundant and she did not give a lot of instructions so students spent a ton of time trying to figure out how to do this.
also, search "Joanna Tolan", she has two RMP page.
steer away from this class. she's a sweet lady but this class is awful. her lectures are boring and her agenda for the class is disorganized. ironic for the class name. you have to memorize so many terms, theories, and terribleness to do well on the exams. this class is group work based and she kinda just leaves you to figure things out on your own
this class absolutely sucks and she really doesn't help that. Super unclear and the tests are stupid hard. You won't get an A. Lectures are terribly boring and the content isn't engaging. Least favorite class I've ever taken. Dreaded doing the work and showing up.
Prof. Tolan really cares about the subject material and wants her students to do well. The group project is a major headache but that is just the structure of all the 304 classes. Participation is key if you want to get on her good side/do well in the class. She is p nice and brought us donuts one day. Tests aren't that hard. Overall pretty good.
She has a very kind heart which means a lot for professors. However, the overall grade of the course is determined by few things which are difficult to ace - a midterm, final, and group project. Moreover, the course material is extensive, repetitive, and uninteresting. Tolan does her best with engaging lectures about dry, common sense material.
Horrible professor. Even had the indecency to ask the class for 4 and 5 ratings at the end of class.
I wouldnt pay attention to the negative reviews. Not sure why people expect easy tests or an A for literally just showing up. Its not an easy class and theres a LOT of information, but honestly, if you just put in the work and show her that you care, itll reflect on your grade. Go to OH (actually helpful) and get to know her- shes pretty chill
As long as you show up and do the work, you'll be fine. She definitely grades hard- I failed both the midterm and the final, but because of the marshall curve, I ended up with a B+ in the class. Don't stress, she's nice when you get to know her.
Despite some bad reviews on here, I really like Professor Tolan. She has been super kind this semester with online work, and she tries to incorporate fun activities for us to do in class. Definitely reading heavy, and with lots of group project work, but I think that's just a 304 problem with Marshall in general.
Professor Tolan is nice, but steer clear of this class if possible. The class covers possibly the most pointless, boring concepts ever conceived, yet also requires a lot of work. The entire content of the course is just a lot of complicated models and acronyms for concepts that every sentient human intuitively understands.
This class is heavy on reading you absolutely have to do, and participation is a fairly large chunk of the grade. Prof. Tolan is great if you participate routinely and stay on top of assignments. Don't fall behind. Be ready to do a lot on the team project; peer evaluations and individual contributions matter. Do the work, you'll be fine.
Maybe the worst class I've ever taken. She is bearable, but the class is not. So many readings about commonsense topics. No grading criteria. If you have a bad group, you're screwed. Participation is a big chunk of your grade that is subjective and it requires you to incessantly speak up about the nonsense "concepts" the class covers.
The class was poorly adapted to an online format. 0 guidance in the group project. 0 uniform grading standards.
Dreaded this class every week. it was disorganized, useless, and time-consuming. It is absurd that this education is valued at 55k a year. I think the students should be paid that much to have to take a class like this. USC, get rid of pointless classes like this before your respectability plummets further
I feel like I know less about whatever "organizational behavior" is than I did before taking this class. Absolutely pointless. If I wasn't paying my parents salary each year to take these classes I wouldn't be so rude, but this course is such a ridiculous waste of time it felt like a social experiment and there is no reason it should be required.
Professor Tolan was an amazing professor. She is one of the kindest educators I have ever had and she is very accessible outside of class. The class requires a lot of time and dedication, but you will get what you put in. I learned a lot from her this semester.
Nearly impossible to get an A due to the ridiculous curve in this class. Got over 90 percents on midterm, group projects, and almost every assignment, and still ended up with a B+. Professor Tolan was very kind but definitely took a long time to grade assignments.
Caring, and attempted to get the entire class engaged (required cameras on and asked students to say hi and goodbye in online class). Took a while to grade some assignments (case studies), but was always there to give feedback in office hours or even schedule time to meet as needed.
Professor Tolan is caring and wants her students to succeed. That being said, I do not recommend her class. It is impossible to get an A, and she does not curve the class. While she provides a detailed of feedback, she grades very harshly. Midterm and final are application based, rather than knowing factual information. This class tanked my GPA.
Is very harsh but also very vague on the grading. Always gives B's on everything and puts "More OB" on the paper and that's it. Have to talk 2-3 times per class to get full participation credit. Very hard to get an A but probably easy to pass the course. Lot's of groupwork and grade depends on your group and the project heavily.
The whole class is about irrelevant HR models/theories/concepts that you will immediately forget. Tests are just memorizing these useless concepts and group work is rough because Tolan is a very subjective paper grader. Groups are random and if you don't get a good group you are in trouble. It's crazy that Tolan gets paid to teach this "course".
Incredibly late when grading assignments and to showing up to class, very boring and dull lectures where she'd go on personal tangents, very few people actually paid attention. To this point, she left 55 percent of the grade ungraded, heading into the final, her final exam by no means reflects the course's material, nice person, but bad prof
Professor Tolan likes you if you participate and are engaged. If you are willing to speak up in class and do the reading- you are more likely to succeed. She is nice and about as interesting as OB can get. That being said, most of the grade remains unknown going into the final. Nonetheless, she is supportive and available, I would take her again.
Tolan takes very long to grade work and most of the class is reading the textbook and discussing the concepts in class. Another big part of the class is the group project. Midterms and finals are very vague. Class lectures can be super long and boring, but 304 is notorious for its bad structure. Grades aren't really talked about till the end.
Lots of work but rewarding if you actively participate and really make sure that you understand the topic. She genuinely cares about her students which makes the class a psychologically safe environment to learn and grow. Grading was prolonged, but feedback was thorough.
Loved Professor Tolan! She truly cares about all of her students. She pushed back due dates multiple times, was always available, and very accommodating. Lectures were very easy to follow, but it could get boring at times only because some of the BUAD 304 concepts seem redundant and irrelevant, which is not Professor Tolan's fault.
material and class is a joke. tests don't reflect what she talks about. slides are a joke.
The lectures are definitely not engaging and she does value participation a lot. However, she makes what she is putting on the tests very clear and is generally very chill.
idk why her reviews are so bad. her tests are a bit more difficult (though u still get a cheat sheet and she tells you everything to have), but since the average is lower the curve ends up being generous. be nice, raise your hand even if you have to bs answers. she brought us snacks pretty often. got an A+ with 80 on final and 85 on group project!
She genuinely is a great person, but the grading is pretty tough and slower compared to other 304 profs. As long as you show up and do the work, you'll do pretty okay though. She also is rather clear on what she will put on the exams. Just remember to participate a lot (I know it takes courage but she picks up any bs answers too).
Tolan is nice, caring, and generally chill. She takes forever to grade anything so feedback is unclear. Her lectures are painfully boring but the midterm and final are both very easy. Just read the highlighted parts of the reading. Grade depends heavily on your participation/how engaged you are throughout the class.
Very passionate about the material and definitely has high expectations. Takes awhile to grade but is generally fair with scoring.
Threw a pizza party last day of class and will sit down and talk with you for an hour during her free time, simply because she's passionate about her kids. Students are graded on three things: (1) Midterm, (2) Group Project, and (3) Final. Create rapport, lock in 3-4 days before during exam season, and you'll walk out with an A. Simple as that.
VERY lecture and participation heavy. She also never graded on time, so I didn't know where my grade was at coming into the final.
Dr. Tolan is a really sweet professor and very understanding with her students. That being said homework is typically a few hours of reading which don't seem necessary in the moment but they are vital to doing well on her exams. Her midterm wasn't difficult and you do get a cheat sheet. Participation does matter and is a large portion of your grade.
