Good for Chem68. Very hard for Chem101. Imposible for Chem102. You need to be a genius to pass his 102 class. Need to understand all concepts and be ready to solve the harderdest problems ever. However he has a sence of humur,(not on the test)
My opinon of this professor is that he wants to be cool with the students instead of teaching the class. He is also somewht self centered.
he's hard and teaches to geniuses

For what he knows in Chemistry, he lacks in social skills. Good luck getting much personal help from him. Dogmatic and self-centered. His good points are that he gives you plenty of exercises in class.
Knows his material well but tests are not representative of whats covered in class. Appears to enjoy "outsmarting" his students.Should spend less time trying to prove how smart he is and more time helping the students that pay money to take his
Knows his material well but tests are not representative of whats covered in class. Appears to enjoy "outsmarting" his students.Should spend less time trying to prove how smart he is and more time helping the students.
Doesn't appear to want to teach. Tests are full of tricks. Average students will fail.
This professor should be barred from teaching! Only interested in tricking students on test and showing that he is smarter. Very unclear lectures and gets upset if you ask questions. Average grade is a low D in all his classes.
the worst teacher. tests are different from lectures. don't do this to yourself.
I am absolutely appalled to read some of these slanderous comments. I think Dr. Milligan is a great teacher. The difference between him and a lot of other instructors is that he is fair. The subject is indeed hard, but Dr. Milligan explains things clearly
He is a genius in Physical Chemistry! Teaching it...well that's a different subject. Tough, yes, be prepared for surprise exams - study the criteria.. as in UNDERSTAND the chemistry or else...you will run...otherwise..great! Hang in there, study at home.
I'll have to agree with the rest, this man lacks major social skills, but he knows knows what he's talking about. If you're not good in math or science, dont take him. He expects you to know your math. In this class your grade is what you deserve.
When you see alot of negative post and one good one, it's the professor on here defending himself. That is sooo sad. He cares enough about himself, but not his students. Get a life milligan!!! Worst teacher ever!!!!!
Dr. Milligan is a good teacher. He is fast, but if you read the material a day ahead you could catch him. His test are as hard as you allow them to be. P.S. Don't mess with him at break. Trust me.
I have been around academia a long time. Milligan is a very good teacher. He knows his material, is enthusiastic, provides ample time for questions, practice, etc. Tests are challenging but fair. Chemistry is tough stuff for most of us.

He's a good teacher but you really have to work at it. Do lots and lots of study problems in the book or lab book. He's a smart guy and he has no problem showing it from time to time. But he's not a bad guy, just very sarcastic.

People get over it. Everyone in the chem dept is hard and at the same standard of teaching. They will not lower their standards at lavc for people that do not study to get all As.
very difficult course and he just teaches rediculously fast. He can be rude at times, but overall he is a pretty good teacher because he can explain things well (but quickly). He needs to realize that not everyone is on the same mental level as he is and be bit more approachable.
Excellent teacher, reasonable in what he requires. His classes are hard to get an A in, but not because of him, just because afterall this is college not highschool, therefore the classes are harder. Students need to take responsibility instead of blaming the teacher.
quite honestly if you are really interested in learning something not just getting an easy grade Dr. Milligan is the teacher you'd love. It's great when a teacher shows enthusiasm for what he teaches. He is very helpful and on top of that it is never boring. Excellent teacher.
AGAIN a terrible teacher in LAVC CHEM DEPARMENT TOOK CLASS AT ANOTHER SCHOOL AND GOT IN A WHICH IS WHAT COLLEGE CLASS FOR PREQ FOR A DMD, DDS, AND OTHER MEDS WANT IS AN A NOT DID YOU LEARN SOMETHING WHERE THE HELL IS DID YOU LEARN SOMETHING ON A MED SCHOOL APP I HATE IT WHEN TEACHERS RATE THEMSELVES
Alot of people take this class without taking the prep-course. Take 68!!!! Everyone who has done well n his class has taken a prep course first. Once you know the preliminaries he's not that bad compared to other teachers. His class is good for self motivated independent learners.
He is not the softest person however he exsplains the material very clearly, he is clear on what he wnats from you, he is not easy but neither is any teacher in this department. Do all the questions on the back and you might get a B, good luck
He's one of the best professors I've ever had! I knew nothing about chemistry before taking his classes. I was even scared of the subject matter. However, he's changed all that. He's very clear on what he wants the students to learn. Do the assigned problems and pay attention in class! He's not easy, but he can teach!
this guy really knows his stuff, but not the best teacher. takes for granted that students are here because they havent yet mastered the field. if youre a chem buff and are a great independent learner... he's the guy
The worst teacher I’ve ever seen. Avoid taking his class. He is very limited in his knowledge and does not care about his students at all. Teaching is just not for him. Exams are very hard if compared to the level of material covered. He has bad personality too. :-((((
I didn't liked the way he teached he can be very rude esp. if your having a hard time.If you didn't master the last unit you better do so before the next exam because it will be covered again and be worth like half the test. If you relly know math and can put up with the long hours go for it but don't expect him to be very helpful nor nice.
This man is a very angry man who uses the students to feel good. he puts down the students, not helpful at all, scares you from upgrading and getting educated. he uses the"F" word in the class and bed mouthing a lots of others which it offended so many of us. he is lazy and does not have any intention to teach. i feel that he wants to get fierd.
Likes: using the F word, writing unpredictable exams, Mountain Dew, taking off points for no reason, the planet Mars, his computer, (and most of all) himself. Dislikes: giving enough time on exams, being courteous to students, having anyone jeopardize his status as a "CHEM GOD".

He is a horrible grader. Does not mind failing everyone. (I think he actually enjoys it). Expects you to study 90 hours per week outside of class. Also does not teach to the whole class - only to one or 2 students.
I took this chem. a few semesters ago and I find utterly baffling that people are getting offended by "profane language". What year is this anyway?? I find it comforting that dr. M talks just like everyone else. I think people are getting lazier each semester because this guy has office hours and encourages students to ask questions. GROW UP PEOPLE
i thought people were just jocking, and they are nto studying and getting bad grades but after taking him, oh yes, no way u can pass this class. he doesnt drop a test, he doesnt gvie any extra credit, lectutes horrible, u dont know what he is saying, the tests no idea where he gets the questions from not from book, neither his lecture. trust me
well the only "extra" chance u have in his class is ur lowest test score will be droped. anyways he is a great teacher!!! i said great didnt say easy :-)
Awesome teacher! I don't know what the people on here are talking about. Gives good lectures. Lectures are all on powerpoing slides. Actually gives you time to work on examples, then goes step by step on how you get the answer. This is a Chem class, therefore it's not easy you have to work hard. Youngest Chem teachers, never fell asleep in his clas
Worse Chemistry teacher Iv'e had so far!
Great teacher, but the class is hard. He's well organized and prepared. He has an attitude so you may like him or hate him, but when it comes down to teaching chemistry, I'd say he's one of the best.
He is one of the worst teachers I have ever had in my life. I have never had any problem with hard tests but his tests are imposible. You see questions on the test that you have not seen in the book or in his lectures. I think he feels great when he sees students suffering. If your grade matters to you DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Milligan rocks! Chem 102 is just ridiculously hard! I think he's very fair, and actually generous with grading. Just don't underestimate the subject, and a B in 102 isn't half bad. I've learned alot in his class and would definitely take him again. Don't be afraid! :)
I have no idea what these people are talking about! chemistry is a hard course, you cant just expect it to be easy. Dr. Milligian is very organize and he makes Chemistry fun. He has a sense of humor and cares about what hes doing. Very organize, he always gives you practice test before every exam.
There are many ways to maintain good grades in his class. 200 out of 700 total points are from labs. If you have any questions he'll always answer to them during the lab period or during his office hours. He replaces your lowest test score with final. Plus to all these, he has his lectures posted online that are even more helpfult than the book.
Spoke to a student who took him last semester and found out of the 12 students left in the class he failed 5 and gave 3 D's. He DOES NOT grade on a curve and he does expect you to study 20-30 hours per week. I dropped soon after. I just don't need to waste my time with such a difficult teacher and I got an A in Chem 101.
Dr. Milligan is an AWESOME teacher. He really knows what he is talking about. If you want the grade you have to put in the time. He was always there to help. And he has a strange sence of humor that makes him a lot of fun. I will take hime again for sure...!!! He's really a cool guy..!!!
Straightforward teacher, predictable tests and no BS. However, no curve or extra credit.
One of the best teachers at Valley!
Satirical, opinionated, and utterly awesome professor. I'd say you either love or hate his personality, but in terms of teaching, he's the best of the best. Powerpoint presentations are employed, as is his website for direct reference. Book use is extremely low, as his lecture notes are much better. Hard tests with no BS, but extremely fair grader.
Sarcastic, opinionated, some foul language. Sometimes says belittling things about people who believe in God. Yet despite several arguments I had with him we usually got along very well, and I got an 'A'. He's excellent at explaining the material. Tests are difficult but fair. He demands a lot, but if you do your part you WILL learn chemistry.
Horrible professor. I had nightmares about chemistry when I took his course. I am a good student but I struggled in his class. His grading is NOT objective. If you have to take him, DON'T get on his bad side. He will find ways to mark you down if you do.
He is floating amidst the elements in brain power, but tries to reach the average learner! It requires work! Funny and helpful.
Take good notes, read the text, and do the assignments in the chapter to earn an A. Great teacher for 101 buy DO NOT take him for 102. His 102 class is much more difficult becasue his tests are different from what he assigns in the text and lectures.
Nice guy, hard to learn from his powerpoints. he subed for mrs. freidman a few times and we had to ask her to redo his entire lectures because he's confusing. He's way too full of himself. liscence plate is "chemgod." take freidman. her class shrank from 30 to 7, but the 7 of us had a blast. Kinda like running through glass, painful, just do it!
Of course the class it self is hard but he tries his best to explain... yes study hard... He wants you to learn not just surface the course. if you study you'll pass.
Prof Milligan = awesome and funny. Class is challenging and demands many hours of studying and participation. Chemistry is a tedious class, so deal with it! He does not offer extra credits and grades very strictly, 89.9999% = B. He offers powerpoint slides and examples to the relevant material, always on time, and answers all questions! If you stu
he doesnt realize that some students are having a hard time in chem..or NEVER taken chemistry before!! so milligan, dont use some fancy scientific terms in the first day of class! we all know that your the smart one, now do you job and be a "teacher" not someone who would make students more terrified of the subject.
Excellent teacher with good sense of humor. I've never understood Chemistry completely before, but this professor made chemistry make sense.
Doctor Milligan is a great Professor. I took him over the Winter and I got and 'A'; I learned a lot from his Power Point Slides and Study Questions. No extra Credit but fair grader. The lab manual can be download from his website. Very Recommended!
I dont know why some people are saying hes a bad prof. Milligan is seriously one of the coolest professors. He's a real fun guy and hes very accessable. His class is hard if you dont study but I comon, its chemistry...you've got to study! I reccomend him to people who want to learn and earn their grade.
NEVER TAKE MILLIGAN! The entire chemistry department of Valley College I think is the worst. The professors all with anti-social disorder. 65% of my class ended up with a D. I had one of the highest grades in class, and it was a C, and he didn't curve. Just boycott this guy, and never never take him. The most hated professor ever by everyone!!
goood teacher up until chemistry 102! DO NOT TAKE FOR 102!! like mentioned previously at least 3/4 of the class did not pass! highest grade before the final was an 82 and the average on the final was a 42% and does not curveeee!
Hard but can explain topics clearly and quickly to you. His tests very fair for 101. Can be a very rude at times. Office hours are shady, but will help you if you catch him. Overall a mixed package. I will not take him for 102.
Took him for 68, inconsistent teacher. No one likes a smart a..! Took off points from lab for not wearing goggles 10 minutes after the class was dismissed. Just don't take dis dude. I know "A" students who got a C in his class for chem 102.
This guy is a loser. spends too much time focusing on himself rather then on being a better teacher. If he doesn't like what he is doing he should quit. and it's clear he is not there because he likes to teach. he is there to maintain his good feeling about himself by putting his students down. he feels smart if other are having difficulties. Loser
HE SHOULD QUIT!!!!!!!!!!
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER!! NEVER NEVER TAKE HIM, ESPECIALLY FOR 102!
Not the best teacher in the world.... Would sit there playing solitaire while students essentially taught themselves. Those who could teach learn on their own (eithor by knowing a chemist or by having taken the class before with another teacher) had a shot at passing. The rest of the class failed.
I currently take his spring class, he s not a bad professor as students say. I believe that the better explanation is that students are lazy. His lectures are clear, he will do everything to help you if you show that you are serious about studying. He grading is fair, gives partial credit exams are so far like what we have done in class and h.w
Cool guy, lectures are clear, tests are pretty fair and grading is even more. If you work for your grade, practice a lot and listen to him, you will get an A. If you plan on cheating or being lazy take someone else. Don't listen to rumors, his class is doable and he is really O.K
Good teacher, does his job and you need to do yours. If you do all the odds in the book, and practice like there is no tommorow, you will get an A, but hey isn's it like that in every science class? He will help and explain if you don't get something, don't be afraid of what people say, I would take him for O-Chem if I could.
This guy makes very simple concepts sound like rocket science. He belittles anyone who asks questions. He treats his students like idiots. I've had hard science courses and I've had easy ones. This guy is the hardest simply because he puts the minimum amount of effort required of him.He obviously hates his job, and it comes through in hisperformance.
i took him for 101, and its possible to get A. u got to work hard tho. he explains very clearly only if u ask, u kinda have to dig things out of him. he curses like no other teacher...could be very funny, enjoyed his class...i would take his 102
He is a really good chemistry teacher. I had him for chem 101 and im gonna take him for chem 102 too ! He explains everything clearly and very helpful .. His tests are not that hard if you study. He is an AWESOME professor .
As you can see the comments became better over time. I don't know if this is MILLIGAN posting about himself or he actually became less cruel. I took Chem 101 with Yadegar, got an A, Chem 102 with Milligan got a C, Chem 211 with Elias got an A, Chem 30B at UCLA got an A+. How does that C fit? 5 people passed in my 102 with Milligan. Conclusions!!!
I'm an average student who fails math and science courses if the teacher isn't good. This professor explains clearly, but definitely not recommended for anyone not adept at math/science. He rushes lectures and minimally explains the material since he expects you to know them. Take Chem 60 or 68 or you'll be lost.
This is one of the best chemistry professors I've had period. Yes, his tests are hard but you are in an upper level class so grow up and earn your A. You will leave this class knowing a lot of stuff. He is very fair with everything he grades and his notes and practice tests are really helpful as a supplement.
The best professor on campus!
One of the best professors Ive had. He is so smart. Made Chemistry fun and interesting. He is very helpful and his notes are very clear. Your grade depends on how much time you invest studying. I wish I could take all my Chem classes with him.
If your looking for an "easy" chem professor, you should change majors immediately. Chem 102 is a hard subject that takes 30-40 hours outside of class per week of just understanding the material.Dr. Milligan was a life saver. He explained things with much clarity and welcomed questions with an open hand. Basically he gives you every tool to succeed
Very lucky and great full that he was my professor for 102. Yes it takes a lot of time, and yes his tests are hard, but you gain so much knowledge. Just don't procrastinate at all, it will break your grade in the end. Best chem professor in the department!
Im getting really tired of all these pre-pharm,pre-med,and other science majors complaining about Dr.Milligan and deciding to take everything at Pierce(because its easy there).Your taking CHEM 102, hes not going to give you your grade, you have to earn it. He gives you all necessary tools to succeed so stop blaming your laziness on this amazing prof
If your algebra is strong, and you're a motivated student, this class is a piece of cake. Tests are NOT hard at all, no surprises; they are either things he's covered in class, or taken right out of the book! Additional notes: Prof. has a very interesting sense of humor, and he is VERY LAZY and it may rub off on you..
hes a great professor....does expect a lot from you.....and you have to know the material well....read all of the notes he gives you.....do all of the practice tests and problem sets he provides in order to become adept to his style of answering questions....do all of the OWL....and complete all of the suggested problems in the book..and u get an A
He is a good professor. He explains his classes in a clear way and he is an easy going person. I like his great sense of humor.I studied full time, solved all the suggested problems from the book, the owl problems, and studied all his practice exams and I got an A.I absolutly recommend this great professor. Take him if you want to learn chemistry.
Horrible teacher. Wants his class to fail.
He is very knowlegble and helps you if you ask him questions, you get a lot from his class. But!!!!! his final was awfull, it felt like he was willing to fail the whole class!!! It was the most difficult test from the whole semester, and it was not enough time to do all the problems. Sometimes I feels like he hates his job and his students...
This class was incredibly hard. He is a very capable teacher, but too often he gives a problem and sits there fo half hour doing nothing. Tests are filled with surprises. STUDY EVERYTHING: All his suggested book problems, memorize powerpoint slides, and take note of everything he gives not on the slides. The online HW is a lot so be on top of it.
Very Hard! Do not take unless you already know Chemistry. He teaches like you know everything.
HARD !!!!!!!!!!!!
Got an A in his class. He is clear but not easy at all. He does'nt care about lab as much but you gotta watch up his Final which could be super tricky
Easy B,doable A.Gives 100% on labs to everyone who submits ontime(even if you have wrong answers).HW does not take too long and not difficult. You have to study for exams though:some problems based on HW,some are not(but they are not super challenging, you just have to understand concepts). We had 4-hour class, and usually left 1-2 hours earlier:).
Dr.Miligan is an awesome professor, but his class is hard. Tests are though, but easily doable if you do the hw problems he assigns, and have a good understanding of math. Unlike other prof, he does offer you a lot of points. Labs are easy points, and he assigns two essays each worth a test grade. Overall professor is awesome, but requires work.
This guy is probably the smartest professor I have ever hard. He is brilliant. However, he cannot teach. His tests are so difficult it is rediculous. I was told not to take this class, but I did not listen. I took it with Calc 1 and Calc 2. You really have to be motivated and willing. If you fall behind, thats it. The OWLs are bloody annoying.
After the first test changed every test date that was on syllabus. He did'nt show for good amount of semester. Most people who got A's or B's new what was on most of the test somehow. Is cruel at partial credit.
Has good sense of humor, unconventional, and weird. Very intelligent. Class is super difficult, and workload is intense. Exams are cumulative & the final is IMPOSSIBLE. Like his personality but this class is too hard! The only student who got an A dropped all other classes and KILLED herself with studying.
Tough class
Very good professor. Tests are easy if you do the hw problems. Pretty funny and a really nice dude. Would definitely recommend him. Just do the work he assigns you, and its a pretty easy A.
This class is tough if you don't take his assignments seriously. He sets you up with everything you need to pass, and it's quite a lot of work. Lectures help clear up any questions, so GO! He may seem unapproachable, but he's actually pretty cool. He'll put in what you put in. He's a huge Doctor Who fan too, so that add to the cool points.
He (correctly) has very little faith in the average CC student's ability to self-study, so he assigns a lot of work for credit. If you do said work and you're comfortable with Algebra, this class is a straightforward A. If you depend on memorization, you won't do well in this class. Understand relationships and get good at solving book problems.
Milligan is a great teacher, but his class is far from easy. This is the kind of class that gets you ready for UC level rigor. Do your reading, follow his instructions, do all the practice problem, ask questions, and do not be intimidated by his House like demeanor. Took for 101&102, highly recommend. One of my favorite Valley teacher's.
He is the funniest Chem professor I've ever had, also the hardest professor. Tests are difficult. most people drop but those of us who stuck it out all received As. It's worth it !
Dr. Milligan is very smart, but he can NOT teach. I mean if you are a chemistry genius like he is, then you're good, but if you're an average student who WANTS to learn chemistry not just pass the course, please do yourself a favor and stay away from this guy. oh btw the final is super tricky :)
good teacher . your base should be good to get an A
he's great just take him and you'll love it
He is an excellent professor! I took him for a summer class, it was a breeze. Did all the problems he assigned for practice. He gives a lot of practice so I didn't have to study much. The class is an easy A if you can do most of the problems he gives in class. Tests have 12 questions IDENTICAL to assigned practice. Final will replace lowest score.
Very tough teacher all around. You have to follow instructions otherwise you loose points. I dropped the class after the second exam because I was a twit and a witless jackbate. Avoid at all causes and take it at la pierce or la trade tech where they will pass you.
It is a good class. However I am not fond of the reading journal we are forced to do. It is a huge time sucker.
he's the worst professor you will ever have.
Avoid this guy at all costs. He doesn't teach and then pulls questions out of thin air for his exams. Shows up 30 minutes late and holds you in after class. He has no motivation to go out of his way to help students succeed. Gives daily quizzes so attendance matters. You have to put in hours and hours of work for a passing grade.
Dr. Milligan is great professor. He knows more then you think. He is grading tough, but it worth, because if its your major it will be easy for yo to understand the concept of chemistry. He always care about students, always answer your questions, the lectures are amazing, sometimes its not easy to understand, but its a science class:))
I took chem 68 in the summer, easiest A ever, then took 101 in Fall, hardest B ever, although I came close to an A. Very tough grader!! He's there to help if u seek it. He gives online practice exams to help u prepare (but the real exam is much tougher). Lots of students dropped before the deadline, but I think he's passing all remaining students.
Always late for practically every class, up to 30-45 minutes. Acts like this class is so easy and can be done with your eyes closed. Is willing to answer questions but does not have the best explanations. If you're not to familiar or comfortable with chemistry, stay away. Smart guy but horrible teaching skills.
Almost always late for class. Usually half-hour late for labs. Likes using colorful language and telling inappropriate jokes. Some students think he is funny, some of us don't. You just have to ignore his BS and focus on passing the class. He goes over chem problems in class which helps in exams. Gives extra points to help flunking students pass.
You should ALWAYS write the correct units and number of significant figures on ANYTHING graded in his class. If you get everything right on a test, but you don't label the units on a few questions, you will fail. This class is much harder than other entry-level classes: lots of memorization, lots of complicated math. Trust what he says at the start
The hardest class Ive ever taken in my life, but hes the best you'll find at Valley (Ive had em all). His exams r impossible, he grades like a fascist, but put in the time/effort & u will learn DO THE HW ITS WORTH SO MUCH Print the exams from previous semester before he takes them down & do recommended book problems if u wanna pass the tests. No EC
Wouldn't completely recommend this professor. Took him during summer and there were 2 exams and a final exam. Takes of so many points for little things! Difficult to pass! Lectures are not bad but the book would be helpful to review lectures. Labs are pretty easy but again, takes off points for little things.
The class was tough, but the atmosphere was amazing. Professor Milligan is hilarious and the class time is so chill. During labs he likes to put on rock music through the class speakers and it makes the whole thing more fun. Tests are tough, but if you study his class examples and ask him to give you extra examples like that, you should be fine.
Dr. Milligan is by far the toughest professor I have encountered in my college career. Your critical thinking and analytical skills need to be top notch to get an A in his class. His exams are far more complex than lecture notes. Try to download previous exams from his website to study. Or save yourself the nightmares. Good luck.
If Chemistry is not your major, do not take him! I am a chem major & I learned a lot from. He is really chill. Really tough test! Chem68 were easy but 101 was a different story! I got A's on both though. If you wanna take him, be sure to be good at algebra, physics (for 101), & a little calculus. Fair grader. Gives you points even though wrong.
Milligan is tough, but he tries to actually explain it to you in multiple ways. AS LONG AS YOU ARE TRYING AND ASKING FOR HELP, he will give it to you. He will not coddle you though, if you ask a simple question you should know, he will wait for you to figure it out, but eventually help. He does not teach on a curve, and there's online HW.
I honestly enjoyed his teaching style; no long, drawn out lectures. Unfortunately, he makes things way harder than would be expected in a 101 course. Each test question usually takes individual concepts and synthesizes them into a chemistry behemoth, requiring advanced comprehension to solve. The book was useless to me. DON'T BUY THE MOLECULE MODEL
Please avoid this professor at all costs, if you have any respect for yourself you'll take this class another professor. This was actually the worst class I've taken. He doesn't care about your grade and doesn't know how to teach, I'm convinced he actually doesn't know any chemistry.
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER TAKEN. I TOOK 101 AND KNEW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WHEN MY PROFESSOR WAS REVIEWING BECAUSE OF HOW BAD MILLIGAN WAS. HES A TOUGH GRADER AND DOESNT CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE
this was by far the worse class i ever took , when the class would try and ask questions he would ignore them and say "well you should know this" once we covered something we would never go back and he would basically leave you to drown . not only was he rude and sarcastic to his students he hardly ever taught , he just performed the equations.
I took Chem 60 with professor Milligan, and it was amazing. I took this class as a high school student to prepare myself for AP Chemistry. He is lecture heavy, but I honestly thought that the class was easy. You are required to memorize a lot, for example, polyatomic Ions. I recommend Milligan for anyone who needs an introduction to Chemistry!
EXAMSARE HARDEE THAN THEY NEED TO BE, he makes the exams impossible to pass. Homework is online which sucks and its super frustrating! Labs are awesome you learn a lot and worth alot. Do his examples from syllabus they may be on the exam. He tends to complicate his answers to youe questions. Ill also add that hea funny. Do the optional journal.
His series is hard, no boubt about it. He's brilliant and can answer any question you have but he makes the exams incredibly difficult by layering the questions with all the topics we went over. Definitely a difficult class, just put in the hard work and you'll pass. A's are very rare so don't expect one.
BEWARE of this professor STudENTS!!!! He is one of the hardest professor at Valley College, do not Expect an A. Take some else, please don't take him, look for someone else. BE ready for 145 multiple choice question exams!!! And the final 160 questions! RuNNNNNN
He is a tough professor, don not take him he will ruin your grade. As much as I study, 8 hours a day. I still managed to not pass. Im very upset, students do NOT take him. DON'T expected for an A PERIODTT !
Yes, his exams are difficult and he expects you to work for your grade. The bottom line is that if you are serious about chemistry and want to be prepared to succeed in life then take his class. I believe he does his students a favor by demanding the best from his students. An easy professor is not doing you a favor, they are cheating you.
I took Dr. Millgan for 3 semesters. His series is difficult, but I appreciate receiving quality instruction. He is approachable and he will do his best to help you. He wants his students not to be cheated and to be successful. Take his classes if you are serious about chemistry and are driven. If not, his classes are probably not a good fit.
Overall, it was a difficult class, but I learned a lot. He really is helpful and will explain things to students until they understand what is being taught. Make sure to understand the homework, the study guides, and text. Good luck.
He is a great solid choice ONLY for Chem 60. He'll teach you the fundamentals and basic calculations for chemistry and whatnot. Other than that, take Chem 101 or 102 at Pierce, not with him!!!
Very smart and funny guy! But he needs to remember he's teaching Chem at a Jr. college, not Harvard. Hmwk assigned is ONLY the advanced ones. He won't even assign easy questions first. He will jump straight into harder concepts. Even tutors think he is too much. He will teach quantum chem and test you on organic nomenclature on chem 101. Good luck!
His test are really hard
Professor Milligan is the WORST Professor I have EVER taken in my life. I truly hope none of you take this course, he ruined my education career. I took an introduction to chemistry course not thinking that he was going to make this the most difficult class. The class was based on two grades and he barely counted the lab. Do not take him, thats it.
This class is incredibly difficult. I havent missed a lecture, write down everything he talks about, study the notes, the book, Khan Academy, Melissa Maribel and test myself with his exams on his website and I still fall behind. You just have to know chemistry well to pass. He teaches this as more of a review class I guess.
Professor Milligan is a great guy. He genuinely puts in the time to answer questions and help wherever help is needed. But the one thing he won't do is chase after you to see if you understand a certain topic. You HAVE to be in charge of yourself and go up to him to ask questions when needed. He is very picky when grading so double &triple check.
He is a great guy to speak with would be my friend if he were younger. But FOR THE LOVE OF GOD dont take it unless you have experience with chem 101 and deep understanding of chem. I am a Straight A student breezed through my chem 68 class and still am managing to fail this class while studying 25-35 Hours a WEEK.
I hate him with every burning passion in my body. He cannot teach even if his life depended on it. He gives problems for us to solve, falls asleep in class, then solves the problem like we should already know how to solve it.
After the first test he accused the class of cheating with no proof and docked points off of whoever he deemed suspicious based on no fact but his own paranoia. The second was even more disastrous. Due to his incompetence the meeting ID for the zoom meeting was invalid and we were unable to access it. After all that he made us retake the exam.
This is one of the worst professors in this department. This professor hardly even teaches. He babbles and assumes people know what he's talking about. Even more disturbing is the grading criteria for his self-fulfilling excuse of a lecture.
Dr. Milligan is a quality instructor. Yes he teaches towards students who are going for a PhD in chemistry, but even non-chemistry majors such as myself truly learned a lot about the subject. His expectations are far above the average professor, so manage your time well to succeed. Attempt every problem from homework and problem sets. Hard classes!
John is an amazing professor. He is easy to talk to, humorous, and knowledgeable of his craft. Will you have to put in the work for your grade? Yes. Will it take time and effort? Yes. Exams are easy if you practice from the suggested problems he gives, practice exams, and pay attention in class. One of the best chemistry professors I have had.
Dropped his class. This guy should not be teaching students. His lectures are awkward (like him), you will not learn anything. Class will be hard for those people coming to learn CHEM, may be easier for those who already know it.
Milligan is extremely knowledgeable in his field but forgets that this is an intro class. He teaches as if it is a review course, I came into this class thinking I would be learning but instead I left feeling as if I missed a class before this one to understand what he was teaching. DO NOT take unless you know chemistry already!!
I took him during a winter session and he was wonderful. Tests werent too hard or long. Homework was literally just practice to help us on the test and it really helped me actually learn the material. Hes very understanding and makes chem a little easier to understand.
The best chem professor I had. Went to his lectures, asked questions, went to office hours, he did tons of problems with me. Got 249.5/300 on the final and finished the course with A. He has extra credit and truly cares about the knowledge he gives you. He also has a great sense of humor and cool chemistry t-shirts. Go to lectures, you'll be good.
Insanely harsh grading on exams. Most students receive a 15/150 or below. Does not teach the material in class, but requires you to purchase all kinds of supplemental materials and books. Very long and necessary lectures, simply assigns problems and has you solve them for 5 hours. Falls asleep during class.
Don't take this low life of a Professor. He sleeps in class. Grades so harsh you might as well sign up to get an F in the class. Thinks he's catching cheaters when he isn't. My guy wears skirts imagine what else he can do. Horrible professor needs to retire as soon as possible.
This is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had in my life. If you take this class, be prepared to watch your professor sleep every 15 minutes, then frantically wake up to the sound of heavy metal playing from his timer. The tests are all heavy graded, where you get points off for not including units in your work. Do not take this class.
The worst professor in existence. Places a timer for 15 min and knocks out cold. Wakes up out of nowhere to loud metal music. He is insane. No units? That is a minus 30. He straight up gives out minus's like Oprah Winfrey gives out money to people. Horrible professor I wish I could give him negative ratings. Do no take him. I repeat DO NOT TAKE HIM
Even though I never took this "guy" as a teacher, all of my friends said he is always sleeping in class. He also wears skirts which is kind of weird if you ask me. I love chemistry and my friends. I guess don't take his class if you do not want to put units because you will receive a minus 50 perhaps even a zero on a exam according to my close buds
The worst professor I've ever had. He curses at his students when we get frustrated with his insane rules, will take negative points of off exams, and gives multiple people 0s. Does not care if you do well, thinks everyone is constantly cheating. Avoid at all costs, you are basically signing up to fail. This guy needs to be fired. Horrible class.
Don't listen to the other reviews. He's a super sweet guy, people are so mean to him. the class is just hard but if you pay attention you can do well. The low test grades that people complain about are because they don't put units. MAKE SURE U PUT UNITS FOR EVERYTHING its not that hard to do so and thats all it takes to do well.
Doesn't matter how much you study for this professor's exams, you will most definitely not do well. He takes off too many points for small things that you just don't have time to write down during the exams. He takes a long time to respond to emails, so good luck trying to get any communication with him outside of the class. Please do not take him.
dont listen to other reviews. they lost points cause they forgot to put the units. this guy is sweet, funny, wants you to succeed. took him for spring 2022. went on lectures, did the review packets, went to his office hours, and since no one was there I had 1.5 hours of doing problems with the prof. Amazing guy, study, put the units. you are good.
he's a funny guy, curses a lot. he also sleeps in class. you get the grade you deserve, you gotta put in effort for an A. i got the grade i deserved cuz it wasn't my priority and i wasn't that focused. yk the meme "work you do in class, work you do for hw, work you do for exams."? that's his class. do the work problems and you're ballin.
Prof is accommodating to late assignments and is generous with grading if you make a mistake on exams if the right process is there. Take resources he gives seriously for the exam. Exam questions are similar to the practice exams and chapter review questions he gives. Chill guy, you can miss labs/lectures. He is VERY strict on sig figs. Self study!
class is hard, but doable. DONT forget ur units + sigfigs,, study a lot !!! do as many practice problems as u can + make a study group. i promise it makes a world of difference! if u need help, ASK QUESTIONS! go to his office hours! he rlly wants u to do well. i've taken him for 101 + 102! can get an a even if u dont do great on the tests.
Funny guy, very knowledgable, curses, likes metal music. Good lectures and labs, but also hard tests
Best Chemistry Professor I've had. I took his 8-week summer class, which was fast (tests every other week). He's funny and makes lectures fun. Teaches OChem (just nomenclature) at the start of the course which is used throughout the class. Hard class but if you put the work in you get the grade you deserve. DO PRACTICE TESTS, AND ASK QUESTIONS!
I've had 3 different chem 101 teachers. One was cancelled due to low enrollment and the other i dropped because i wasnt prepared for the workload. His class sucks. Hes not passionate about teaching, he doesnt lecture, just puts a problm on the board and leaves us to do it the whole time. So hard to learn. Feel like I have to teach myself chemistry.
Almost crashed 2 times on my way to lecture, I should've taken it as a sign. On the plus, he gives full credit on all lab reports(I don't think he actually checks what you put).
He has a horrible way of explaining things. I watched ochem tutor the whole time to try and understand. His practice tests are absolutely nothing like the exams!! gives u 100% on hw even if its wrong, pretty sure he grades for completion somewhat same for labs. He's not the worst ever but you will have to put in a lot of work outside the class.
Milligan is a good lecturer. Labs and assignments are basically free points. Don't miss lab, practice problems, include the units and pay attention to significant figures. You will be fine. 101 is not as bad as people make it out.
Very bad teacher don't know how its allowed.
Horrible lecturer. Spent majority of class time talking about politics/other random topics which had nothing to do with chemistry. Does not properly explain well during his lectures and his "slides" are awful. It felt like a complete waste of time going to his lectures because you left with nothing done. Do not take him, you'll be teaching urself.
good luck lol
This is the goat. Coming back to review cause he has a lot of bad ratings. Everyone rating this guy poorly is just being boring and not putting in the time. Had very engaging fun lectures and is genuinely a good guy. You do your part, you're getting a good grade. I'm at Berkeley now, and he's still one of my favorite professors I've had. GOAT.
40 minutes late every day, for both lecture and lab. The only day he was on time was when he was being evaluated. Incredibly tough grader for someone who had multiple typos on multiple questions on the exam, then tells us to just "switch the numbers around". Had adult tabs on his browser multiple times. Falls asleep in class. Can't make this up.
Bad Professor. Do not recommend taking whatsoever. I'm convinced any positive reviews here were paid by for the professor, or made up by him on another account. Not good at teaching, and the lab segment consists of mainly lecturing, rather than “lab”. Nothing is really clear in this class. Professor falls in and out of sleep while lecturing.
He doesn't respond to emails on time and shows up to class late almost every time. He responds late, so you don't get any information. Get ready to do labs by yourself. If you want him to look at your lab, good luck, he won't get up from his seat.
Very long lectures that often run into lab time. Material is tough to follow and exams are even harder. Most test averages were in the D–F range, and there aren't enough students for a curve. If you're not a strong test taker, you must stay on top of every assignment to keep your grade up.
Professor showed up to class 30-40 min.late EVERYDAY, except for (conveniently) whenever we had Proff. Evaluations. Had adult content tabs open. Discussed inappropriate/controversial topics in class, which he brought up. Held no responsibility or accountability to mistakes made on his part. No organization or time management skills…Good luck.
Do not take even if there are no other options at LAVC. There are many other LACCD chemistry teacher who are much better at other campuses. It is worth the longer drive to never step foot in his class.
