Class is alright. He is a very nice guy, but get's somewhat moody. Test are multiple choice and essay, they are mostly from readings but very general and easy. attendance is mandatory and he gets mad if your late. Overall somewhat intersting class and easy to get an B / A.
John is a very cool guy and is very excited and exuberant about what is going on in the world. His tests are not hard, but they do need to be well prepared for considering the amount of information being covered. Don't blow off his class, the lectures are extremely important in what will be covered on the test, but he is willing to help you out! Ni
This class is so boring I wanted to die, he gives lots of random worksheets to do, then grades them as a surprise. He's really bad at answering questions clearly, but loves the sound of his own voice. Still, he wants to help and the class is somewhat easy.
He's a great guy, but a BORING teacher. Random worksheets are annoying and he gets pissed of if you aren't as into the EU as he is. I think he believes this is the only class we take and we should be current on all EU news. Tests aren't bad. Theres a 7-10pg paper which isn't terrible. His lectures are vague, boring, and run until the last minu
The class is interesting most of the time. Dr. Scherpereel really knows his stuff. It's easy to do well if you go to class and study the lecture material before exams. Pop quizzes are very basic. Take him.
nearly impossible to get an A unless you leave and breathe the european union. youd have to read every single thing (which is like 1000000 pages) but if your just trying to get a C or above youll be fine. Nice guy, kinda funny, kinda quirky. I got a B with moderate effort, tests are quite difficult.
fun class made me declare a international affiars major, nice guy knows his stuff...got to eat lunch with him which was really fun...take him you get a chance...
"Scherp" knows his stuff. He's lived in Europe, and has lived and breathed the material. He's energetic, so class is not boring. It's not difficult to get a good grade if you go to class and participate in discussions.
Great teacher. Straight forward, and very good lecturer. Tests are easy, though there are a lot of articles to read, but nothing to hard
He knows what he's talking about, but you had to know politics before the class. There is tons of reading of articles which are lengthy. There are pop quizzes and tough tests, along with tough grading of papers. I felt this class was very difficult because I knew nothing about politics before the class; I ended up dropping the class.
WAY too many readings: book, 20 page articles, and daily newspapers. Pop quizzes are hard because they ask about EVERYTHING. Tests aren't too hard, but you need to go and take notes to do well. Group worksheets and simulations are a pain in the ass. I'd much rather sleep than be here 3 mornings a week!
The class is alright, he tries had to make it interesting with different media/simulations but the class is still boring. Pop quizzes aren't too hard if you read the newspaper and gloss over notes before a quiz. Tests are a little tricky. Usually you don't need to read the textbook at all... excited about the class at first but then it got boring
Prof. Scherpereel is an extremely knowledgeable teacher and does a great job incorporating both his knowledge and class participation into his lectures. He does know his stuff, so expect for the test and papers to be graded by a guy who knows what he is teaching. I would highly recommend!
GPOSC200 was one of the most challenging courses I'v taken thus far, however it proved to be the most fruitful. Scherp. is extremely demanding-- there is a ton of articles to read as well as a textbook and washington post requirement. M.C. midterm/final- not too bad if you study. 2 simulations. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time but learn alot!
Be prepared to put in time for his class, but you'll get so much out of it. Makes class varied through different readings, podcasts, online lectures, simulations, etc. which help to provide a well-rounded view of the EU. His lectures are crystal clear and interesting. Would recommend!
I always looked forward to going to POSC. He's a great professor with thorough lectures that are interesting and clear. He's also a really interesting guy and knows his stuff. I definitely recommend his class. A lot of reading, however and the test are really tough.
Very, very into the EU and everything European. Sometimes comes off as un-American. Lots of reading, and a good portion of test questions are from the reading. Tests are half multiple choice and half essay. Multiple choice are not easy. Will not give you any help outside of class that he doesn't tell the whole class. Seems relatively nice.
He's really smart, and completely adorable in a nerd way, but this class is rediculous! His lectures arent that bad, but I didnt learn anything. I read and studied for many hours for his tests, but failed ALL of them! When asked what will be on the test he says "everything is up for grabs" DONT TAKE!
I always went to class, didn't pay close attention but wrote down the notes on the slides. Then before the tests I glanced over the notes. You also have to write 3 two page papers which isn't bad and take a few easy quizzes. I got an A- by doing this. The only people who do poorly in this class are very slow learners.
Scherpereel is a great teacher. he knows exactly what he is talking about and his lectures are crystal clear and easy to understand. His tests can be difficult though. It's not just about memorization!! If your are willing to put the effort into the class and are interested in the subject then he is the perfect teacher for you. no spoon feeding
definitely knows what he's talking about and his lectures are moderately interesting, also gives 5 easy quizzes throughout the year for grade boosters, has 2 papers that he grades pretty hardly and the tests are ridiculous but you can pull off a B or C without knowing exactly what youre talking about. theres probably better 240 prof but hes not bad
he is adorable in a dorky kind of way. 5 pop quizzes on the readings, but its easy to figure out when theyre going to be. have to read 3 books outside of class that were kinda boring. tests were hard, i barely read the text book but went to class and got a B. 2 papers that he grades pretty easy
Very knowledgeable about the topic. Keeps class up to date on current affairs. You have to write a 6-8 page paper and take 3 tests. Most of the questions come from the reading. Definitely take him for any European course
Lectures can be boring and very detailed. You will take lots of notes. Exams are very tough. Super detail oriented and the subject matter is not easy and can be very difficult. One 6-8 page paper and 2 simulations. Quite a few homework assignments. Class is mandatory. He is not an easy grader but is a really nice guy.
Lectures are boring! He doesn't explain things in details, and slides don't even help. never take him for POSC 240.
Hardest tests I've ever taken, for each one I studied days in advance, knew the material very well, went in and got a D. I normally find POSC classes to be easy--not this one. Lectures are boring, and the readings make me want to head-butt a knife. For what its worth Schepereel is a nice guy, but for the love of god, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dr. Scherpereel is a great professor! He is very knowledgable and great. He is willing to help each of his students and looks out for them. I don't know what these other people are saying, I studied for the midterms and got an A on all of them. It's a morning class so I see why people would be zoned out. Take the class! VERY INTERESTING CLASS
Great Professor! Dr. Scherpereel is super helpful (if you seek help, which he makes sure people have equal opportunity to). He loves what he teaches and wants to make sure people understand. there are 3 books to read and the textbook is constantly used but all readings are easy/interesting. TAKE HIM! you won't regret it.
Excellent for people who are into poly-sci. Nice guy, fair, interested in the class and good discussions. He's helpful in office hours as well. People who don't like him are typically people taking gen-eds who aren't as interested in the coursework. Good for upper level classes.
Scherpereel is a really great guy. He is so passionate about what he's talking about in class. As a freshman I'm doing fairly well in the class with a solid BB+, or so he told me, above the mean. His testsquizzes are tough, because anything we readtalk about is fair game. Probably not for you if you're not POSC. It's manageable if you work at it
He's very knowledgeable but this information is tough if you don't have any background. You need to do all the readings to pass. He is a tough grader. 3 multiple choice tests with Essays andor IDs. Each worth about 20% of your grade so there's not much room for error. Would not take again. A lot of obscure information without thorough lectures.
The class was very average in every definition of the word. It's essentially a history class, so be ready.
It was definitely a hard class but Dr. Scherpereel is more than willing to help and is very passionate about the topic material.
Schep is a great professor. The grades for this course were just a few reasonable exams and three short (2 page) papers. I only needed the textbook once because I skipped a few classes, & he's heavy on lecturing. However he's probably the best lecturer I've had so far so if you go to class & take notes you can get an easy B. Attendance isn't graded
John is awesome. He really makes you work for your grade and you need to go to office hours. He is very passionate about politics and will happily discuss any global issue with you! TAKE HIM!!!!
Great guy!! Hard tests. I thought I ended up acing the first test (the information wasn't hard) but the average was a 75. I'll end with a low mid B in the class. Tests 18% and 3 papers (you choose 2 out of the 3) worth 10%. 2 page papers are a life saver for your grade cus he doesn't grade tooo harshly.
I'm an A student at JMU, and this semester my GPA is going down to God knows what because I either have a C or B- in this class. A lot of my peers loved this course, but I found the professor to be extremely difficult to understand due to the words he used, as well as quite boring, He's a sweet guy, but his tests are full of trick questions.
He's a cool guy. Funny at times, sometimes the class can be boring. He explains everything so well. His tests are pretty hard, be ready to read a lot when taking the tests. 4 tests and 3 papers (you can choose 2 out of the 3 choices of papers).
He is very enthusiastic, accessible and made me want to pay attention (even though sometimes I still couldn't). The tests are not extremely difficult if you know all major concepts. He does a lot of scenario questions and throws in questions from textbook readings we have never talked about in class but all you need to read is vocal terms really.
i LOVE john scherpereel. he's so passionate about politics and he clearly is very educated, and a brilliant teacher. class could get tangential at times but it was always very interesting. i loved the topics and ideas presented in this class, absolutely would take again.
Awesome choice! His lectures are beyond intriguing and he brings such an excitement to the classroom! There is 3 tests, 1 quiz, 1 group projection, and a 8-page policy brief. Tests are straightforward and he is more than fair when grading. Highly suggest him for any class!
He's amazing and he can really make a boring subject like comparative politics bearable. I love him so much so if you have a chance to take him do it. He does assign lots of readings but I never do them I just go to class and always get a B or better on the tests. You will have to do 2 papers but their only 2 pages and very easy
Avoid at any cost. Do not take him for POSC 240 or any other POSC classes. Tests are extremely difficult even though you are well prepared.
Do not take! Attendance not mandatory but if you don't go you will fail. Tests are extremely hard.
he makes this class harder than it needs to be. tests are extremely hard and he grades the papers harshly. lectures are vague and the powerpoints have little to no info on them. if you have to take him its fine. just study a lot for the tests and be on top of the books for the response papers
TESTS ARE SO HARD. make sure you study A LOT!!!! know the definitions of concepts and terms but you also need to know examples of them because his tests are completely situational and have a lot of trick questions. study at least a week in advance for them.
Great class but tests are very difficult. It is vital to read the textbook and pay close attention/take notes during class lectures. One of those classes where you can give maximum effort and still receive average grades. However, the professor is enthusiastic, very intelligent, and accessible. Enjoyed the class but definitely challenging.
Schep is definitely a professor who makes you work for you grade. However, I had him for POSC240 and took him again for EU politics because of how passionate he is about the material and how willing he is to help you. His enthusiasm made me care about the material and his classes are some of the only ones that have actually challenged me in college
Dr. Scherpereel is very passionate about the subject and cares a lot about his students. Definitely not an easy class, but if you do the readings and study a good amount for the tests you will be fine. Three exams, a final, and two papers. Take him if you have the chance.
Dr. Schepereel is a great professor. Is lecture are very interesting but it is important that you attend class to understand the material. If you do the reading go to class and study for the test this class shouldnt be too difficult.
He seemed to be going off on a tangent almost every lecture, and kind of explains things as harder to understand than they are. Three tests, two short essays, and a final make up the whole class. No other assignments or extra credit, so you have to study and do well on the tests. We received scores after every test but they were unavailable online.
He displays a great attitude and passion about politics all around the world. But your final grade is bound on how well you do on three tests and final exam. The two short essays assigned were easy but don't help your grade enough if you don't do so well on the tests. Take good notes in class and do the assigned readings in order to do well.
Dr. Scherpereel is an awesome professor! His lectures are interesting and he creates good discussion in class even though it's a class of 100+ people. His tests are a little wordy and can be tricky. Lots of reading.
such a good guy but the tests are some of the hardest ive taken i never fully grasped the material but the lectures are easy to follow along with. just be ready to put in days of studying before tests. i failed the class and have to retake it but im taking him again for a different class if that makes anything better. he really will help no matter.
Alright, I don't care for the course material at all. The EU course just fit in my schedule. But, Dr. Scherpereel is a good professor, there's not discounting that. This class is tough, he is a very tough grader. The average grade on most assignments is lower than I'd expect. Taught online, the class seems a bit scrambled, but is still worth it.
Great professor!! He is so knowledgeable and you can tell he loves what he does. Incredibly helpful and kind. Of course with higher level classes, it can be a bit of work but nothing overboard. My favorite POSC professor, definitely definitely definitely take him if you get the chance.
I liked him most of the semester, but he did nothing but frustrate me at the end. Waited till the last min to tell us an 88, not an 87 was a B+ (I had an 86.5)! After having issues w/ a group project, got a B due to group members who didn't show, then found out they got the same grade. Good content, frustrating grading. Participation grade matters!
Let's be clear: this class is hard. The content is dense, but Dr. Scherpereel genuinely cares about the subject. He wants everyone to learn and is easily available outside of class if you need help. That being said, his lectures can be a little boring and the tests are quite hard, so make sure to STUDY if you want to do the best you can.
Prof Scherpereel is a great professor and is engaging in his lectures, but the content is very difficult to understand so extensive studying & consistent attendance is necessary if you want to do well on the exams. He posts the lecture powerpoints on canvas but each slide comes with a lot of spoken lecture so don't plan on just reading them to pass
This was the hardest class I have taken as a POSC major at jmu. For a defining class in the major, a 200 level, he treats it like a 400 level class. I went to every single lecture and struggled to pass the class. If you have the choice between him and another professor, choose the other one.
Nice guy but difficult material. Lectures when I went were fairly boring. Tests were hard. There's 2 papers but they were short and pretty simple to write
He's a really great professor but that class was nottttt easy at all. Tests are difficult but he curves them. He also gives two papers that he grades pretty easily so that can help boost your grade. I would recommend him but be prepared to work your ass off :0
First and foremost this class with any prof will be hard. He tends to overcomplicate things and the lectures are pretty boring and so it becomes hard to follow, even though the content itself is interesting. You will NEED to read the textbook . I recorded the lectures and that's the only thing that helped me pass! For legal reasons that was a joke.
Professor Scherpereel is a nice man but lectures are pretty boring. I studied intensely for his tests and could never score above an 80. He is understanding and gives good feedback but I'm glad this class is over.
Dr. Scherp is really passionate about this class and he wants students to be passionate about it too. His exams were less concept based and more application based, which made them more difficult.
He is a great guy but he forgets we don't all follow or know about European Politics as much as him, the tests are very difficult. No matter how many times the information is given to you it still doesn't show up like that on the test material.
He's super passionate about what he teaches, but I think thrives in this class most because it's his speciality. Definitely a tough grader but if you read and apply the knowledge from lectures you're golden. My second semester in a row with him and I wish I could take him again. He's funny, and just wants you to try or participate.
Prof scherpereel is one of the nicest and most accommodating professors I've ever had. He genuinely wants every student to understand what is going on in the course and tries his best to explain complicated course material. Lectures are long and can get boring at points, but he does his best to keep the class engaged.
I love him as a person but he is an intense grader as well as exams are difficult. I tried really hard in his classes and never received the outcome i felt like i should have. Almost felt like a grad level class
Prof Shep is by far my favorite teacher in the POSC department. I cannot understand the negative reviews outside his 240 (it is hard). But for upper level classes he is the best and super accessible. You aren't graded on many things but he really takes his time to grade the things you are graded on. Cannot recommend this professor more.
Really passionate about what he teaches which makes what would be dry content really interesting. 3 tests, a 10 page paper, and a few small homework assignments. The tests are hard to get an A on but as long as you study you'll get a B. He's definitely one of, if not the best professors in the POSC department. Take him if you can!
Dr. Scherpereel is extremely passionate and makes lectures enjoyable to be in. He's available and happy to engage with the class, and though you can't always write down everything he says, he conveys the information well. He also brings in a good number of special guests during the semester. Tests and the essay are not hard if you read and study.
Cool guy, relatively easy class, interesting lectures but he can get off topic quite often. Take him
He's tough. One of the harshest graders out there. Super nice guy, but I would avoid him if you can.
This is the worst class I've ever taken. It's like he enjoys watching students struggle to do well in his class. Unless you want to question your sanity the whole semester, avoid this dude at all costs!!! HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH
He is a great professor, the lectures are very interesting. It definitely helps if you go to class. He truly cares about his students a lot, the class is hard but, if you take the time to do the assignments you will do well. best 240 prof
He tends to go on a lot of tangents that don't really pertain to the topic, so the class can be hard to follow. He relies heavily on the readings for exams and quizzes, these readings also tend to be pretty long. Not horrible but I wouldn't take him again.
Honestly, the class was boring. Dr S was nice, but the class was not engaging at all. 8 homework assignments based on readings, 3 exams, cumulative final, and one paper. not a hard class and I would take him again but the class could use a revamp.
Such an amazing teacher! Very passionate about the course subject and very cooperative with students. I enjoyed this course and I learned so much. Will strongly recommend!
Lectures are heavy and can get boring. The class is very repetitive, and there is nothing to really be looking forward to. The tests are based on readings that are LENGTHY, so make sure you are prepared. However, nice guy.
If you have the chance, take him. He lectures heavy and sometimes it's confusing but he will clarify better if you ask. Graded on only tests and a paper and pop-quizzes (for completion). Do the readings and ask questions if you're confused. 10/10 professor.
Entirety of class grade is test/quiz based + one essay. He recently changed the initially take home essay to an in-person essay to mitigate AI use. Not chill and an excessive measure to prevent something that can be checked for with other methods. Chats a lot which is fine but the in class essay with no prompt before hand is so unnecessary.
He is suchhh a good professor. Says that you need a textbook but you really don't, you could easily get an A on all of the exams just by paying attention and taking good notes during lecture. He is also just a good kind person. I very highly recommend taking him if you can
He is such a nice guy and honestly cares about students wellbeing. However, the class is very test heavy with the only grades being 4 exams, 1 in class essay, and quizzes. The lectures get really boring but if you go to his office hours for help, he's very understanding and passionate about the material.
The only grades are from 3 tests, a paper, and a final. Paper is more like a helper to bring a grade up. I went from a 62 to an 88 between test 1 and 2. He reviews your tests and makes a spreadsheet depicting everything you did good and bad on. VERY HELPFUL. do thing reading = do good in the class. Very school dad core. HE CARES ABOUT YOU.
he is such an amazing guy and so sweet. i tend to get really bored during lectures but he is very good at explaining things thoroughly. theres 3 tests and 1 in person paper which is your entire grade. cant lie the tests are HARD but the essay wasnt too bad and honestly if you do the chapter readings and go to office hours you should be fine.
fine professor but this class sucks so bad. it's really confusing content and the professor doesn't do a super good job at making it easy to understand. He is really nice thought and super welcoming to office hours.
Such a nice guy. You can tell he really cares about his students. No attendance, tests aren't too hard as long as you do the reading and go through the notes. He posts all notes on Canvas which is so nice.
Dr. Scherpereel is amazing, caring, and brings energy to every class. You can really tell that he cares about his students. The course is test heavy but I found the exams to be pretty easy as long as you do the readings and take good notes. Attendance isn't mandatory and he also changed the take home essay to in-class which made it less stressful.
