Ackroff is a terrible teacher. He flys through a chapter in a lecture and puts stuff on the exams that he doesnt go over. Stay away from this class.
Ackroff is a terrible prof. This class is pretty diffcult to begin with but he does a great job of making it even more complicated.Lectures are extremly boring, hard to follow, and understand. The curve is ridiculous b/c is so hard to pass the course.Beware
I thought he was very clear and conscise. If you really like to listen to deep philosophy this is the gut to take.
Really knows his materials. If you are a good listener and note taker you will find him interesting. If you need power point to stimulate your senses, don't take him.
He's a nice guy but his lectures are very boring. All he does is read from power point presentations! And his slideshows don't even cover all the material on the exams...you still have to read and understand the whole book.
He is the worst, most boring professor i have ever encountered. his voice is so low and so monotone it is impossible to remain interested. the book is just as boring and his exams arent too hard, but are still hard enough--DONT TAKE HIM!
He may not have the most interesting lecture style, but it's very easy to follow and very easy to understand. Reading the book is a good idea too.
Professor Ackroff's class wasn't the easiest psych class I've ever taken. But if you are interested into going into the psych field then its a class you should take. He's a nice guy with a lot of patience and he's helped me to improve the way I study
Cognitive psy. is one of the hardest classes I've taken in college. The lectures are boring and Ackroff doesn't even teach, I can't believe this guy gets paid.Going to class and reading the difficult+crappy book won't help either. The exams are impossible

HARDEST CLASS EVER AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY(IN MY EYES).YOU WILL SEE MANY DROP THE COURSE AFTER THE FIRST TIME THEY FAIL THE FIRST EXAM! MANY HAVE SAID IT AND ILL SAY IT AGAIN....READ THE BOOK FROM COVER TO COVER...EVERY DETAIL COUNTS...EVENM THE STUPID ONES
The subject matter is boring. I don't know who could make it fun. He includes unnecessary clips that might eventually drive U nuts. 3 open note/book 20 mc questions exam and good luck finding the answers. If U are interested in cognition by all means take him. If not Read the book & UNDERSTAND it!!!

He's nice, pleasant, BUT HIS EXAMS SUCK .. with open book you'd think its a breeze but the questions truly are impossible .. the average on all three exams was a 13/20 there is no curve but plenty of extra credit opp. overall, i wouldnt recommend him to anyone i care about
His exams are very hard and stressful. but, he is an exellent grader!!!!
excellent teacher, confussing exams, I failed the first, but anyway i still got B at the end of semester.if you show up for class, go to his office hours, he helps a lot.
His exams are pretty hard even though they are open notebook and open notes. The best way to do good on his exams is to GO TO CLASS! I got most of my answers from the notes I took in class. Also he tries to trick you on the exam so be careful. Anyway, Ackroff was great in my opinion.
Ackroff is not as hard or boring as everyone says he is, he gives you SEVERAL ex. cred. opportunities and also grades on a curve. And as for those "boring videos and slides", that is his way of giving you something other than blabbing for an hour and twenty minutes. if u didnt pass, u didnt study.
So far this class is a piece of cake. Lectures are a rehash of the book (verbatim), which can be boring, but still. Test was easy if you bothered to open the book. I got an A. He needs to get more modern movies, though. He's got 20/20 clips from 1984. Easy, easy class. Approachable prof. A/B
The class is Ok. The tests were hard, but using First Class Notes helped a lot.
even though the exams were open book, they were hard and you still had to study. i didn't go to class cause all the notes were online but i got a B so i guess it wasn't too bad.
he's not as bad as people say. Offers plenty of opportunities for extra credit and makes the material easier than it has to be.

this class sucked. i expected it to be fun but all he did was read off of his lecture slides and went way too fast. u have to read and basically memorize the textbook to do well on the test which have tricky questions at times. he also doesn't have much enthusiasm when he speaks so it makes things even worse. take james or atwood for abnormal!
Hard tests, lecture is pointless and boring. Best bet is to read the book.
material is mostly dry. the videos he shows are interesting though...the TA was really good and held review sessions that pretty much taught everything. open book tests are not as easy as they seem...alot easier if you read hte book before. there were only 60 pts in the class, which makes it harder, but noncumulative final. not too bad, just read
not as bad as people say he is! though he is a bit boring, he puts the power points online, open note exams and offers some extra credit too! not to mention there will be a curve at the the end. :) makes up for everything else.
i hated his class with the burning of a 1,000 suns! ok, i'm done being dramatic. but honestly, DO NOT take his class! there are other profs who are clearer & actually test you on what he/she teaches.
Run for your life! I don't think he explained any of the nonsense he threw on his tests. Read Read Read...and PRAY! That's all you can do. I went to every class and I found that most people in the class who did well on tests considered it pure luck and guess work. Tests are tricky and open book does not help much.
these bad reviews written about him are just people being crybabies....I got an A in the class, just READ the book so you know where to locate everything on the exam- go to his review sessions!!!!!!! he gives a lot of extra credit too...so, just read the book, go to review sessions, do all extra credit
He is an alright guy. He trys to make class interesting, but I still had a really hard time staying up. Open book and notes for test, but that is because they are very very hard. Always some extra credit, but you do have to go to class and ready for a B.
I pulled of an A in this class via miracle.you have to read EVERY chapter thoroughly even though the exams are open book/note. No need to go to class aside from the videos he shows on occassion. He doesn't explain the material, is very dry and not too thrilled to be there or help. Really, avoid this class if you can, or take it with someone else!
20 questions per exam. 3 exams. open book b/c it's extremely difficult. and even with the 3 points of extra credit & the very small curve, the grades were horrible. don't take this class w/ him.
exam isn't hard like veryone else says.. i got an A without reading the book and just attend the class. So its durable. remember, open book w/ 20 questions for each exam... means easy!!!
Basically, if you want to do good, you have to read the book (very carefully) because he like to pick out insignificant facts and put them on the exam. Going to class it pointless because he just outlines the chapter that you have to read anyway. He does give some extra credit though.
i never went to class and have an A in the class because of the extra credit and curve. Ackroff comes across as boring and he kind of is, but he's a nice guy if you need help or actually talk to him. Take the class, it's easy with the extra credit and curve. Annoying cuz the textbook is online
He's an ok teacher for a boring class. The material is dry, the book isn't that great, and his lectures are ok. His exams aren't easy, but it's not impossible to get an A. You get to use the book and lecture notes during the exam, but he makes the questions that much harder. 3 exams, no final, ok class overall
This class was pretty hard. I did terrible on the exams and thought I was going to fail, but to my surprise, there is a HUGE curve that I ended up with an A. The classes were extremely boring but he provides all the notes. I would recommend this class because even if you do poorly, you'll still end up with a high grade.
I went to maybe 10 classes and still pulled a B. Having not been to class, I thought the exams were somewhat difficult, but there was a curve so all was well. 3 exams, all multiple choice. If I could bear his voice enough to actually go to class, I would have gotten an A, but... whatever. Not too bad, overall.
The one professor that had correct answers to my questions. No bull crap. Movies class along. Would take his class again.

Here's the deal. Professor Ackroff is a great teacher and knows ALOT. He is also veyr iwlling to help. the downside is that while tests are open book they are incredibly hard to do well on adn while there is a curve, getting an A is no east feat. Also, don;t buy the book. Study his notes and study them well, specifically the experiments.
I don't go to class. I just read the text and do the practice exams. I am maintaining a B+. I could get an A if I were dedicated to studying for the upcoming final, but I'm a graduating senior, so I don't really care at this point. Not a hard professor. Not a hard class.
Slides online, read the text and take the practice tests. Class is useless, unless you don't know how to read since all he does is read his own slides during class. Questions on the exams are sometimes on obscure points.
Exams are no longer open book and are impossible. 50 questions that I prob couldnt answer with the book in front of my. dont take this class
Worst class I have taken here - the book is overly complicated and wordy. He doesn't give open book quizzes the slides are bare and the book doesn't help at all. Don't take this class the average is a D which says a lot - hope he curves cuz we all need it.
After the first exam, I regretted taking the class, as the open notes exams were very heavily dependent on a very horrible text. But with his short and long form online exams, I was able to get the hang of it. There were three exams total in the class. If you just listen to his lectures and take notes plus read the chapters, you'll get an A.
He sucks pretty bad. His tests are straight out of the book. You have to pay attention to EVERY detail. If you do, you'll def pass. NO OPEN BOOK QUIZZES. He does give you a chance to get up to 2.5 points per exam of extra credit ( and it's really easy so you'll get it). lectures are boring as hell, it's impossible to pay attention. no attendance
Had Ackroff for Abnormal Psych & Social Psych. He curved in Social Psych and gave lots of extra credit. He is nice, helpful, his test questions can be pretty picky and detailed. Read the book. Lectures are boring, just power point presentations.
doesn't care about his students..I went to the TA for help and she said that he blamed our "dismal" performance on us. No open book, relies heavily on experiments from the book..MUST print out slides because otherwise you won't keep up w/him..take this class w/a different prof. if possible.
Not as bad as I thought. 3 tests and a BIG curve at the end of the semester. I thought I was failing and got a C+. READ THE BOOK! If you read the book and do the extra credit you'll be fine. Don't need to go to every class, it is really not necessary.
Class is borring, he talks the entire class about useless stuff. His powerpoints suck. He is not helpful when you ask him a question about the class he does not answer it, he is very rude. Tests are ok, got a C+ in class DO not recommend on taking him because his class is borring and he is very unclear.
AVOID this professor!!!! Don't take him!!! Worst class ever!!! Can't teach!! Very rude and is not helpful to his students when they need help understanding part of the material.
The exams in this class were tough, but it was okay since I went to every lecture except 2. I got C's on the exams, but ended up with a B. Just do all the extra credit, it really helps (if offered).
boring lectures, but lots of extra credit, easy A even without going to class much, MUST read the book
he is a horrible proffessor so boring do not take this class!!
He is the worst professor ever! boring lectures, just reads off his "copyrighted" powerpoints, and has no interest in helping out his students. I went in during his office hours and he just shrugged me off and didn't even know the answer. He had to search for it in the text. DON NOT TAKE HIM....WHATEVER YOU DO!
The class isn't bad if you do your work and read the chapters from the beginning. Doing the homework really helps your average and there's a nice curve at the end. The class isn't as bad as it seems at first and he's really helpful if you go during office hours
boring topic in general, lectures are very dry...pretty decent class, just very boring. also, he learned how to use clickers so u have to go to class :-( ...otherwise could learn the material easily on your own
Professor is clear lecturer. If you pay attention to what is covered in every lecture and carefully use practice exams, you will do well. His pace is slow and is easy to follow.
VERY RUDE! does not care about his students or about helping them. he makes his students feel like complete idiots and talks down to you. but, lectures are very clear and straight out of the book. the only reason to go to his class is because of the clicker questions, otherwise you can pretty much teach yourself the material from the book.
Ridiculously boring to the point where u want to tear out ur hair. Im in his class now & the amt of stress its caused has made me seriously consider dropping out. Must go to class cuz of clicker questions, his exams are spread over two days, & he is rude boring & uptight. You learn from the book & he just reiterates. SERIOUSLY DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
This is not a difficult course, unless you're dreadful with math... You're exposed to the material multiple times, computational exams are open-book, and extra credit is offered. Ackroff comes off as thoroughly uninterested in his students, but he's actually a little bit funny. Apply yourself, do the work... You can only blame yourself if you fail.
boring and not very good or interesting as far as lecture goes. test questions very detailed and annoying mult choice.ie: a)blah b)blah blah c)both a and b d)none of the above
Read the book thoroughly!! His lectures do not help at all. Take the CPE's and quizzes seriously and you will do well in this class. Avoid if if possible.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The material is very easy to understand but the way Dr. Ackroff words his tests.. makes it impossible to get a good grade. He puts 3 out of 4 possible answers... and its multiple choice... final grade is based on just exams. Don't try going to him for help because he won't help you.
yeah his lectures are a little boring and stuff but he can be funny. theres a lot of work when it comes to this class. clickers, book work, online exams, and two day exams were really annoying. know that the reason why theres so much work is to introduce the material in several different ways. got C's on all of the exams..B for the semester.
Rude. Boring. Unhelpful. Just go to class and do the work because its definitely necessary. I got a 97 on the first test, a 100 on the second, and a lazy 80 on the final and only got a B because I missed a lot of clicker points and CPE's. His lectures are useless except for the clicker points. The book is a hundred times better at teaching than he.
this guy is such a tool. rude, and obviously thinks very highly of himself. you can teach yourself the material easily, and probably more interestingly from the book..so don't waste your time with his "copyright" notes. psych majors who have to take cognition/stats should definitely chose another professor.
the guy is the biggest tool ever! but there's so much you can do to earn the A...clicker questions, extra credit (one paper worth 40 points!), homework, online homework, and the exams. the only reason you should go to class is b/c of clicker points otherwise he's useless. go to recitation and learn the math there. don't ask him for help, he's rude
This man is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He basically shows up and spews out information without intent to really help the student to understand. Worst of all, his tests and clicker quizzes purposefully trick the students. He words things in such a way that can cause confusion. Instead of reviewing material, he DEviews it. fail
I HAVE NEVER HATED A TEACHER MORE! He gave a pop quiz the lecture after the test and assigned a paper the lecture before spring break and had it due the class after spring break ended. We all walked out of the test thinking we did well, but we all did terrible (the average was an F) not because it was hard but because he grades like a moron
he's not hard if you do the work, yeah there's a lot of it, but that makes it easier to get a good grade in his class. do the work and go to recitation and you'll be fine. he's also kinda funny in class...if you get dry humor.
try to avoid if you can. His cognition class is very difficult. class average is a 58. really smart guy but bad confusing teacher. avoid
if you do the work and pay attention, this class is easy. everybody who says otherwise doesn't try. he gives you so many chances for extra credit and the work isn't that much either. its college, people. the online exams and cpes he makes you do actually help. theres a 40 point ec paper you can do/i filled out a survey for something and got 20 pts.
He should be teaching math for autistics not cognitive psych he seems incredibly bored in lecture and has no passion for the subj. On the syllabus he writes that he does not want anyone named "sexgoddess" emailing him. Creepy. As though that wouldn't make his year. He should congratulate himself for giving exams SO HARD it is impossible to get an A
This class is easy, as long as you read the book (or skim) before class- you wont understand him if you don't read the book. Recitation is helpful, plenty of extra credit opportunities. I've never talked to him, but he has some dry humor and isn't that bad. Just read the book and you'll be fine. Also lectures are pretty boring, but he tries.
This class is so easy! Just skimming the book before lecture (probably don't even have to go if it wasn't for clickers) is enough to get an A. Ackroff is harmless and tries to make class interesting. His lame jokes are what makes it funny- I don't know if he does it on purpose. This guy is great. Just do the reading and go over in recitation. Easy.
His lectures are kinda dull and his exams are pretty tough but he is not a mean guy or anything. As long as you pay attention, both of those problems should not be a factor. He has power point notes online too and there is extra credit!
Quantitative methods was pretty funny. Everyone says its so hard but its prob one of the most laid back classes ever. Lectures are mandatory because of clickers which are easy points + extra credit. I got all B's but over 80 points of extra credit and I got an A in the class. You dont need to go to recitation and its easy.
He is not such a bad guy. He comes off like arrogant and terrible but he is a fair grader. Class is very very hard - if you want an A you must study and attend lecture. Also there was a tutor for the class who held supplementary instructions - def take advantage of this option. If you can take this with an easier BS teacher DO THAT.
i don't understand where all the bad reviews are coming from. i just had the final for behav data analysis with him (1 credit equiv to quant methods in psych), and got an A. do more than what's expected in class. for any college class if you cant at least teach yourself the material then go practice doing that. it is your fault not the professor's.
Keeps to textbook so theres a lot of reading.Difficult class but the prof himself is not bad. His TA ATARA is useless! Doesnt teach. Has students do all her work. Condescending, arrogant, scatterbrained, makes mistakes that students have to point out, doesnt know the material herself. Should NOT be allowed to teach. Useless.
Very boring lecturer - confusing wording in essay questions and exams - average grade on exams is 50! He is rude and not very helpful in emails. I would choose another professor.
I dropped his Cognition class and am a much happier person because of it. Do not expect a clear question/clear answer portion of the exam. It does not exist. You could memorize the book, have an excellent understanding of the material and still answer a question about it incorrectly. This class was a thorn in my side the entire semester.
You have a better chance of splitting the atom in your garage with power tools than getting an A in this class. The fact that there are tutors available should send you a pretty clear message. He is not a bad guy, but his exams are very difficult. Save yourself a giant headache and avoid this class.
Stay away from any class this this guy teaches. It is impossible to do well in his classes. He is totally confusing and unclear and his exams are overly difficult. What a waste of time and money.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! the textbook helps but seriously you go to lecture and are completely confused..dont do this to yourself!!
This course is a rigorous, but the set up of the class makes it very EASY to do well. He is a good professor and I think anyone who says he's not is just mad they didn't do well in his class. If you do the work that is assigned, you will do well.
This professor is one of the worst I have ever taken at RU. There is NO curve, just cutoff ranges. The class exam avg is consistently an "F". The TA is heartless like the professor, and extremely brutal when it comes to grading essays. One tiny mistake, and your essay score plummets. The multiple choice is tricky and confusing. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!
this is the worst class ever! the textbook itself explains everything that you need to know but he makes the attendance mandatory by giving us clicker points by showing up to class. the course itself is easy but he makes his exams difficult which is very not necessary. he has no desire to help his student. rude and arrogant!
If you do bad in this class, it's nobody's fault but your own. He makes extra credit readily available, you get to use your book and notes on the qntative part of the exam, and there is a curve. Plus, there are more clicker questions offered than required. First couple are extracredit. I got an A. If you don't do the work, obv you won't do well.
He's impossible to understand unless you've already studied the chapter he is teaching. His grading system is ridiculous and it doesn't matter how well YOU do in the class, it matters how well the class does bc he grades solely on a curve. I hated this class, and yet did well.
Ridiculous teacher. Can't hear him, he doesn't slow down if asked. Arrogant. Requires a LOT of work. Ridiculously hard exams. Hated/still hate him with a passion!
His class wasn't that hard. He gave students many oppourtunities for extra credit and to get an A. he also recites everything from the textbook in his powerpoints. overall not too bad
if he didn't have the manditory clicker questions that count for a big part of your grade, i would't have gone to class. reads off his slides and doesn't really help explain it. i taught myself EVERYTHING in this course by reading the book. a LOT of work (clickers, homework, online exams, essay exams, computational exams). only take if you HAVE to.
The class is not terribly difficult, just takes some hard work. Read the book before lecture so you can answer teh clicker questions, and go to recitation because that is really helpful. The first and last exams are difficult but the second one is easy, and you are graded based on your recitation. Not nearly as bad as a lot of people say.
clicker in class so attendance is basically mandatory since it counts for a good portion of the grade. a lot of homework due almost every single class. online exams almost every week. a great deal of work but if you go the work you will do well. three exams, 2 parts for every exam conceptual and computation. recitation is helpful. extra credit too
Professor Ackroff is unapproachable and rushes through lectures. This was not a difficult class, yet there was a great amount of work involved. Exams, online exams, CPE's, and clicker questions all make up one's grade. Make sure to go to recitations and visit the TA's to truly get the most out of the material.
material inst too hard to understand. reading prior to class will help on clicker points. He inst easy but he grades FAIRLY and there are a lot of opportunities to get extra credit
alright so hes really not a very good professor but the material is not that hard and he offers a fair amount of extra credit, so it's really not a hard class. despite some trouble in the beginning i ended up beasting this class, mostly because i had an AWESOME ta, jason. prey that you have him, he's the best!
Okay, there's no way in avoiding taking Ackroff if you need Quant, but don't be scared off by him. The class is a lot of work but it's very repetitive so it's not bad. Couldn't pay attention in class (it's boring), learned mostly from recitation and book. Lots of extra credit! Online exams. Read chapters before class to get clicker questions right.
Material isn't too hard, you definitely learn it in recitation and reading the book, not lectures..Ackroff flys through his slides. Dont ask questions, he's arrogant, will try to make you look stupid. Lots of work and opportunity to get a decent grade, plus extra credit. Clicker questions are big, the only reason I went to lecture
Class was a lot of work outside of lecture but it was pretty manageable if you keep up with the work. he is not too helpful in lectures but outside the class more.
He's hard to follow and not a very nice man at all (ie bad prof). However, if you're lucky and have a good TA, you should be fine, as the questions and concepts come almost entirely from the book (with diff numbers). Still, as long as you do the clicker questions and work, you should be fine.
Easy class. The people who say he's hard are either stupid or don't try. I am not good at math at all, but got an A in this course easily. He offers more clicker questions than points necessary so they count as E.C. You get to use notes and book on exam. ITS EASY. HE IS NOT A BAD TEACHER. Easy A if you read and do the work.
Do not take him for Cognition - he is the asolute worst and very unfair!
I went to every lecture and the supplementary instructions. I didn't study my life away, I just went over the slides a few hours before the exams and got a B. So if you actually put effort into it you'll get a good grade. Book wasn't really useful; you don't actually need it but may want it. Essays on exams were graded unfairly I think though.
Not a nice guy, & if you have any prior stat knowledge, this class will be harder for you than if you know nothing at all. He has his own way of doing things instead of standard stat rules/notations. Its impossible to really know where you stand in the class because he curves grades but wont tell you the point cutoffs; overall it worked out though.
His class was okay. The material is fairly easy, although his clicker questions can be tricky at times. Class requires tedious work but in the end all that work should pay off to and easy A or B. (TIP: If you can get into a section where Lyra is your TA, your life will become much easier.)
Rudest man ever. Hope you don't get Atara as a TA she is useless. The class is curved so you never know exactly where you stand, in the end it turned out ok. Grades on essays are not fair. Lecture is pointless but mandatory for clicker points. Don't be late or you can't turn in homework
I have studied so much for this class as I have not studied for any other. I read every chapter 2ce, never missed class or recitation, did all papers and extra credits and homeworks and got B
I have studied so much for this class as I have not studied for any other. I read every chapter 2ce, never missed class or recitation, did all papers and extra credits and homeworks and hardly got B :(
Professor Ackroff gives extremely difficult exams. However, the curve is enormous, and I managed to pull a B after getting a 50, 60, and 73 on my exam grades. As long as you thoroughly read the book, you should get at least a B. He isn't very helpful, so you'll have to pull your own weight. Avoid taking him if possible.
VERY HELPFUL professor. I went to his office hours alot and he was extremely helpful! I don't know why people don't like him. Although I must admit, his lectures are pretty boring and he goes really fast through the slides.good TA (Jason or Sean) if you are not intimidated by Ackroff, please please go to his office hours if you need help.
Ackroffs class requires a lot of work. there are online tests every week, text book problems due every week. 3 exams. and a lot of EXTRA CREDIT opportunities. exams are in 2 parts, and are not to be taken lightly. this class completly depends on your TA so get a good one. SEAN STEVENS was the best TA this year. all his students did fairly well.
Beware, the final will make you or break you. It's unfortunate that you put in a lot of work throughout the year to get a good grade and do everything perfect on time, doesn't matter if you don't do well on the final. Worth a great deal of points. Also, the book becomes your best friend. This class requires a lot of reading, not just math!
Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be! He's kind of intimidating and sometimes a boring lecturer, but he gives students a ton of opportunities to do well and learn the material with a bunch of different types of assignments. If you do all the work, you can easily do well.
Ok Ackroff is a bit arrogant but this class gives you the opportunity to easily acquire the A if you keep up with the work and understand the concepts, which are extremely easy! got 200/200 on the ANOVA exam. Its not bad at all.
Dr. Ackroff is a great professor; he scales the grades (I got an A with a raw score of 78.5%) and he gives extra credit quite often. Most Rutgers students would complain about his difficulty but that is just because most Rutgers students are lazy degenerates. I would especially recommend this class to prospective cognitive science students.
I took the class Spring 2010. Class was alot of work. Online assignments, homework from the textbook, attendance pretty much mandatory (although indirectly). he was a****. i taught myself everything and relied on my TA Sean for instruction. Do your work, get an A.
Lectures move quickly b/c there is so much info. You MUST do the reading. There are a lot of opportunities to get easy points. Take advantage of chat rooms online! Prof Ackroff will not be there all the time but he will pop in if he sees a lot of confusion. He's been in chat rooms til 3:30am on nights before a test to help students! He cares!
Great professor, in my honest opinion. Lectures can be rather dull, but they are easy to follow. Definitely go to the recitations with the TA, though. And do all of the assignments - easy points there. Multiple opportunities for extra credit. Exams are fairly straight-forward. I did not use the book (except to do the homework) and still got an A.
Really if you pay attention, attend every class and do all the work, and most importantly read the book and understand it there is almost no reason why you cant get an A
im getting an A with a 73 in the class, never attend lecture. just read the book before the exams
Ackroff is difficult, but by no means impossible. I took his Quant and Cog classes, and learned an enormous amount. Both pose challenges, but if you read and ask questions on ANYTHING that confuses you, you will receive the answers, and the exams will be conquerable. I am eternally grateful for his helpfulness in and out of lecture. Great man!!!
This is not a hard class in that there are many opportunities to get points and get an A. I skipped a few lectures and missed like 3 lecture quizzes (yay me..) but I still did fine in the class. Lots of homework and online quizzes every week but they REALLY help to prepare you for the midterm, ANOVA, and cumulative final exams. TAs are helpful too.
The comments made me so paranoid that I ended up overstudying for each exam, and got 100's on 2 of them (final too.) Don't listen to everyone else.. class isn't mandatory and you're an idiot if you really can't understand the book. (It's written w/ 3rd grade vocabulary.) Just do the HW and you'll get an A.. Try not to miss too many quizzes though.
Take everything everyone says about quant with a grain of salt! It's a class that if you work hard, do the OE's and CPE's for and study, you'll do well. I didn't expect to get anything higher than a C and I ended up with a B. My TA (Jen) was also so helpful. Ackroff is a nice guy and he curves, it's just a hard subject with boring material. Study!
A lot of students dislike the grade scale, seeing as how the raw score is irrelevant and grades are based on where you sit in class standings. It adds a competitive element to the class, which I find nerve racking yet refreshing and exhilarating. He concisely highlights the important details of the text (from which he bases his exam questions).
Ackroff is not a good teacher at all, but there is no need to fear his class. I stopped attending lectures and simply went to the recitations and taught myself out of the book. Reading the book is absolutley NECESSARY! You learn more from the book than from Ackroff. I'm not a math person at all, but if you put time into the book, you will be fine.
It's a math class, so you have to work for your grade. He'll help you out if you ask for it, and he generally has good TAs. Reading the book is more important than lecture. Looks a bit like Freud, it's pretty amusing.
You will read the textbook cover to cover multiple times. This is a difficult course for anyone who isn't used to rigorous math classes. I worked my butt off the entire semester, harder than for any other class, and I only got a B. He also loves to give quizzes on material he hasn't taught yet. HATED THIS CLASS.
Quant is an annoying class and Ackroff only makes it more annoying. He has a bad attitude that infects the entire classroom, he mocks students, rushes through material, and does not make any attempt to engage the class. He definitely knows the material, but it seems he has no idea how to make anyone else understand it.
One of those forgettable professors that teaches an unlikable yet required class. Provides an average teaching experience, complete with corny, terrible jokes. A real bore. Be warned, quant requires an annoyingly large amount of work. Put in the work, and you will be graded accordingly. This class should be removed from the Psych requirements.
He wasn't helpful at all, only went to class when i heard there was a pop quiz from the class before. Got through with an A from the textbook though, which was really helpful, he's just a big ol' grinch too
I'm not a math person at all, so I really didn't like this class. Online exams are tricky, exercises are alright. He posts all his slides, which is good, but he really rushes through his lectures and isn't very clear. He knows his stuff but just can't teach it. READ THE BOOK! Doing well on exams is a must. Try to avoid him/the class.
He's adorable! His class is difficult, if you do not study and do the problems in the book. However, he offers lots of extra credit and is helpful, so there is no reason for anyone to get anything lower than a B. Study for the exams, do problems, and ask questions and you'll be set.
i was scared to take this class after reading about it on rate my professor. ackroff is not that bad. he answers your emails in literally 10 minutes if you have questions. it is A LOT of work, weekly homework and online exams, 2 midterms and a cumulative final. never went to recitation. read the book cover to cover, taught it to myself, got an A.
Only man I know that curves down. I had a B by the end of the semester and his curve brought it down to a C+!! what?? The sad part about it is that the class wasn't even that bad. Buy the book, you will def need it....
I love Professor Ackroff, but this class is SO BORING. He leaves blanks on the slides so it's recommended that you go to class, and the material is very dry. However, he gives you what the exam essay will be, things to focus on, and if you've had classes with him, he has a GREAT curve on final grades. The book is terrible though.
The class was easier than I expected, having read everyone else's reviews before taking it. You must read the book and take the time to practice problems/review concepts on your own. The online exams were somewhat frustrating, but there's extra credit and a nice final curve to make up for it.
Great professor, explains slides thoroughly, as explained in a previous comment, the material is very dry and the book is TERRIBLE. Go to class because he leaves many blanks on the slides for you to fill in. EXCELLENT curve because he grades you against others in the class. I'm taking him for Cognition this Spring.
All the people saying the book sucked are idiots because you won't need to go to class if you just read the chapters, you will understand a lot more that way. I got an A with a 77 so that should show how hard the exams are
Did not attend any lectures but I read the book before every exam. As usual with Ackroff, the class consisted of 3 difficult exams but one huge curve. Plus, he gives extra credit.
Go to class! Some of the slides he posts are not complete/incorrect to trick you. I only referred to sections in the book when studying the review sheet and got an A. But you need to attend class and listen. very dry material and un-enthusiastic professor :/
very boring class and very uninteresting. material isn't hard and the exams are not too bad if you study. not good at teaching the material. learned more from the TA during recitation
I took the class bc i thought it was an interesting subject in psych but he makes it incredibly boring. lectures are dry and straight forward. attendance is pretty mandatory because he has a lot of blanks in the slides and doesnt put them online. he gives a very large curve at the end though which is good, but the exams are quite difficult.
I have an incredibly difficult time paying attention in class because of how monotone his voice is and how boring he makes the material. I think if you can pay attention in class and read the book, you should do well. He does curve test grades, so although I have a C on each test so far I have a B+ in the course. He's not terrible but not great.
Disappointing.
Terrible. VERY boring lecturer. He is out to get you on exams. The only thing that helped me pass was memorizing the textbook (which was a tough read as well). Leaves blank spots in the notes on sakai so you have to come to class. He rockets through the slides and gets SUPER P!ssed if you take a picture of it with your phone. Very hard to keep up.
Easy A if you attend lectures and read the book. Extra credit assignments are easy too. Class is curved significantly. He usually lets you out early as well
Professor Ackroff has a monotone voice that makes it difficult to consistently pay attention in class without drifting off. There is a huge curve in the class but the online exams are quite hard even after reading the book. There are also essay portions to some of the exams.
Professor Ackroff is one of the very best professors at Rutgers, always willing to listen to students, always patient and professional. Great sense of humor, friendly and polite. The subject might be dry, yet Professor Ackroff presents it in a manner that makes it interesting. It is as with any language, requiring practice and patience to succeed.
I took this class thinking it would be interesting. However, this professor was so mono-toned that I stopped going to lecture after few weeks.
exams are tricky and you have to attend lecture because he intentionally leaves things out of the slides. but if you read the chapters after lecture and study you will get an A because of his huge curve
Class isn't that bad.His exams are nothing like what he explains during lecture. Make sure you write down his comments and explanation of the slides he puts up in lecture. Info on the slide is like an outline. I did that and read the chapters of the book that corresponded with his notes and managed to get a B with his curve.
SO EASY. Make sure to study the notes and the *textbook*. Ackroff can be boring, but the text isn't. Know the studies well, and if you don't go to class, get the notes. Write out the essays ahead of time. There's a HUGE CURVE. Put in a little bit of effort, and you'll be fine. He's willing to help, too. (DO THE EXTRA CREDIT IT'S EASY AND WORTH IT!)
Pretty monotone but he tries to be funny sometimes. He puts fill in the blanks on his slides, so if you miss class you're screwed. His exams are pretty easy. I didn't study much and still pulled off a B. His essays are easy if you study the experiments in the book. It's hard to pay attention because he can be boring but he's a good professor.
His exams are a meant to be confusing, but he gives a HUGE curve. Final isn't cumulative and all the exams are based off the book, so going to lecture isn't really important. If you can teach yourself with a book (which isn't hard for psych), take him!
A lot of people complain about him but he's honestly not that bad. He will give you a chance if you express your concern and will try to help. Exams are a bit tricky but you obviously have to study. Read the book, study his notes and you're good. He gives a very generous curve as well and offers extra credit.
Go to every lecture, he's a bit of a boring lecturer although he tries to make jokes. He gives you the essay questions beforehand. You Prob won't need to buy the book, he puts it on reserve in the library, i just went before the exams to write out the questions and i was good. I went to his office hours, he is willing to help if you ask. Min. study
Yes he is a boring lecturer but he is a very straight forward professor. Take good notes and read the book and you should be fine. He is willing to discuss things with you if you attend office hours.
Do not take this professor and if you do please note your semester will be hell. Attendance is mandatory because he leaves his powerpoint slides blank. His exams are really tricky and too difficult. So avoid this professor at all times. They say he curves I really havent seen any curve in this class. He overwhelms you with essays.
Boring as hell. Exams are super confusing, BUT they have a HUGE curve. If the textbook is on reserve, I'd suggest NOT to buy the book, because only about 5 pages TOTAL was pertaining to the material learned/on the exam. Lecture is mandatory only because he leaves some notes/words out of slides. Also if you find his slides confusing, go to class.
Huge curve. But the lectures make my brain drip out of my ears. Last lecture, the man literally started doing a cross word puzzle on the overhead. I was at a loss in regards to what he was attempting to demonstrate.
I've had Ackroff for two semesters in a row (PSY311, PSY305). Got an A in 311 and a B in 305. If you have half a brain you'll get at least a B in his class. Read the textbook, go to lecture, study the power points, and talk to Ackroff if something is unclear - the guy is intelligent. I highly recommend him for any psych classes.
Took him for Cognition and Conditioning & Learning. The test are hard, but if you do the extra credit, go to class, and do his study and essay guides, then there is no reason not to get an A or B with the curve. Not a professor I would recommended for those who skip class frequently though. Textbook isn't necessary, but is useful on occasion.
The professor is very boring, however the material itself is not hard. If you're not going to attend lecture you need to get the textbook. Exams are a bit tough but he gives a wonderful curve. He also gives the option to do extra credit so there's really no reason to get below a B in the course.
He's very monotone and dry, but the lectures move by quickly because the notes he gives you are blank and you have to fill them in as the lecture goes along. He gives a study guide before each exam, and there's extra credit available (make sure to do it). Curve is huge, and it's very easy to do well in this class as long as you go to lecture.
With a D on the first exam and a C on the second, it's a miracle I got a B overall. I went to every class to fill in blank powerpoints, studied extra credit online tests (do 'em) and he curved enough for me to receive a B. He's a good professor, you'll just have to study a ton to do well.Went to office hours once, and he does help, but so stressful.
Class is tough and he makes it tough. Dont take it with him please save your sanity.
He describes material very well and is pretty well organized. He expects you to know EVERYTHING. Everything from lecture and random details from the book. Go to class! He does not put nearly all lecture information on the slides and his lectures are very useful!
This teacher gives tough tests with essays. Your entire grade is made of three tests and this class is harder comparatively than all other general psych classes.
He doesnt take attendance so you never have to go. Theres 2 quizzes and a final. For each, there is 40 multiple choice and an essay. I never went to class and just read the chapters that would be on the exam the night before and i got A's. Also, he gives you the essay questions ahead of time. Its definitely the easiest class I will ever take.
Lectures are dry, but to be fair he has to cover a very large amount of material in a short period of time. Helps when you ask for it, and also tries to make normally-dry material entertaining through visual examples. Tests are straightforward + he offers practice testsextra credit. Overall pretty good; be ready to study for ANY psych class.
He is pretty good with his lectures, however misses on certain topics. The curve is pretty good. Attendance is important. Answers emails promptly, however doubts related to textual material are ignored sometimes. If studies decently, could be an easy A.
I am a 4.0 student and this class was hell. The exams are made to fool you and they definitely will. Ackroff goes out of his way to make it harder just for the pleasure of it. He doesn't respond well to people asking anything in class, and seems very annoyed that you disrupted his well-rehearsed lectures. Honestly, avoid at all costs.
No matter how much you study, no matter how much work you put in, his exams are going to be the MOST OBSCURE exams you will ever take. He purposefully makes his tests so ridiculously convoluted that you will actually find yourself laughing as you're taking it. The worst professor I have EVER had. All positive reviews he has must come from him.
This professor is not trying to teach you, he is experimenting on you. He makes students participate in his "research" and I'm positive that he then makes his tests based off of the answers his students get wrong and were uncertain about. Tests are insanely difficult; as hard as a diamond, but not nearly as pretty. Prof is curmudgeonly. AVOID!!!!
He's lectures are really hard to get through and the exams are multiple choice plus essays. He gives you four essay questions in advance, puts 2 on the exam but half of every question requires extensive outside research and it's just terrible. The exams are really hard too and I attended class regularly and read the book
Posts powerpoints with some empty phrases to fill in during lecture to help retain information No homework, 2 exams, 1 final, all have extra credit Only puts you in his research if you ACCEPT-other graders are definitely exaggerating Sometimes 20-30 min. lectures Tells (subtle) jokes I only read bookpractice exams, still got an A, don't worry
I have no idea what most of the reviews on here are talking about. Ackroff is one of my favorite professors at Rutgers. I took Gen Psych with him and intentionally took Cognition with him because I liked his lectures so much. I have an A in the class right now just by going to lecture, taking the pretests, and doing some light reading.
Course material can be tough and thus the tests can be a little confusing. HOWEVER this course might have the biggest curve at Rutgers. You need to beyond bomb to not get an A, something like 25% of class gets an A. Material can be interesting, but Ackroff is not. Expect crossword puzzles and stories of his vacation lifestyle.
Attendance is important since the slides he posts online have blanks. Lectures are interesting and often end early. Practice exams are extra credit. Exams are 40 multiple choices, one short essay (he posts 3 questions online, puts 2 of them on the exam, and you choose to do 1.) Had him for Cognition and C&L, recommend both. Never used the books.
Currently have him for Learning Processes (aka Conditioning & Learning). He is AWFUL. He goes through lecture very fast. I printed the power point slides (which has fill in the blanks) and still can't get all the notes. He snaps at students in class (never ask to go back a slide). His favorite words are ok, um, so, and right. Big curve on exams.
Nice guy. Goes really quick in his lectures- I don't think he's used the full 80 minutes once. His tests are similar to the practice ones online and as long as you pay attention to him you'll do fine on the exams.
He goes so fast during lecture just powering through it and if you ask him to go back he says i don't know what slide that is or if he does its for a second, three exams/non-cumalitive: first two exams are 40 multiple choice/1 essay then last test is just MC. DO the long practice exams and get at least a 56/80 to get the 2 points EC for each exam!
Pretty much awful. The structure of the class is simple; 3 tests with extra credit opportunities. He gives study guides and posts notes (fill in the blank). HOWEVER, he flies through lecture and you spend the whole time coping not learning. don't bother asking to go back a slide either. I teach myself by reading the book and reviewing study guides.
Boring lectures and unclear tests with essays. Awkward to talk to and lots of homework. Probably would never take this class ever again.
830:101. Not the easiest psych teacher. He kind off just reads off slides with no real explanation on things. Exams are really hard. He curves it a little bit and you can get extra credit. Definitely not an easy A but if you put in work you can get at worst a B+. Study the book way more than his slides. oh and TA is an awful essay grader
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!!!! HE IS SO RUDE! his exams are extremely tricky and the TA grades the essays so harshly. I regret ever taking this class. avoid if you want to maintain your GPA. he doesn't care about his students. take it with someone else if you can.
The class isn't too bad in terms of difficulty. The exam questions are literally information pulled from the textbook too, so you just have to read carefully when you study. He also posts reviews/study guides with topics you should focus on so you can hone in on your studying material a little better.
JUST DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just save yourself from a headache and don't take this class with him. His exams are so hard and the questions are very unclear. AVOID HIM!
