laid back
Does not teach. Does not care about students.
doesn't teach, doesn't help!
If you have taken calc b4 its pretty easy, if not dont take him!
If you go to class he explains everthing really well. Doesn't use computers.
very cool, down to earth, won't talk over your head
i failed this course b/c he din
very easy esp. if you have taken calc. before
No Comments
Never taken Calc before, pulled an A b/c of him. Go to office hours=very helpful
Great guy...easiest class ever

if its cob 191 your taking, get ready to teach yourself on material that's hard
The classes are easy, tests tough to get a good grade because so few questions
laid back and questions for the tests are practically given to you
Good teacher. Makes calculus understandable for the math illiterate. Go to class
very interesting and gives plenty of time to answer q's
No Comments
hard to contact, hard to understand, often rambles off topic but he is funny.
his tests suck
Helpful if you go to his office hours...if he's there!
Touch class, he explains well, just keep up with the homework...
really funny always making people laugh, really down to earth and friendly, easy

You don't have to go to do well in the class...very funny guy. likes beer!
He knows his stuff. You can tell he wants to educate us.
Good teacher, tests are killer, so be sure you know how to teach yourself.
Does ramble off sometimes, doesnt take attendance, kinda have to teach yourself
IF YOU LIKE SHEEP, TAKE THIS CLASS, IF YOU CAN TEACH YOURSELF, TAKE THIS CLASS
HARD tests, funny guy, answers ?'s, KEEP UP WITH HW; in person ONLY, to talk
dont like him AT ALL.
Do the work and you'll be fine
Hes a good teacher,
Helpful, clear and most imp. his last two tests' matter the most
all the class is 4 tests and they are easy to cheat on...i got an A
Good Professor
Good teacher, tests are kinda hard, but he is willing to ask questions, take him if you can
His class is easy, no attendance, optional homework and easy tests. and he is a real good guy.
No one likes math. But Mr. Adams is cool, I've had him for 2 classes and plan on getting him for next semester too. He knows his stuff.
good person...hard to comprehend-must teach yourself info. no attendance policy, easy to get in touch with.
He is awesome! I loved him so much- his class was fair. If you do the work and go to class, you'll get a good grade. He has the best accent and listening to him talk is great. Easy to follow, clear, fair. He's a great guy and a great teacher.
weird dude..
I had him for 155 and 205. very straightforeward and tells you exactly what will be on the test, be prepared to a little work tho
Adams is great. He doesn't give + or -, only a straightforward grade. He tells you exactly what will be on the tests. Do your homework and you'll do well on the tests b/c he usually gives mostly the same or similar problems from the hw on the test.
Give it to you straight, take him. I didnt do any work except the required (which isnt much)and went to class bout 3/4 of the time and got an A, he makes things simple, He's a mountain man, he explains things so a 1st grader can understand
Great teacher and guy. Attendance is optional, but it is recommended to go for those who haven't taken the course before. He is approachable during office hours also. Do the work and you'll get an A.
This teacher has no attendance policy and is a very helpful guy. His tests aren't that bad because he will tell you everything that will be on the test. He is also very good at explaining math and calculus compared to other teachers that I have had.
Cool guy, funny for a math teacher and has an awesome Kenny Rogers/Yosemite Sam accent . Fair teacher, go to office hours if needed. Only 4 tests, do bad on one and the final counts for double. Easy if you try.
some like him, but I found him very unfriendly in person and he makes himself very difficult to get ahold of. No attendance policy, but if you miss a class youre screwed
I'm not good at math and I pulled a B in this class. Its not easy but its not hard as long as you don't zone out during the over simplified lectures. He's a real funny guy and he makes the class fun to go to.
Tests are easy and attendance is not taken. He's funny and know what he's talking about.
Great Guy. Wonderful Human being. Motivates you alot if you are struggling. Style of teaching is helpful, will explain in detail. Do the homework...and you'll do fine. If i could I would take him for every class.
Will drop the lowest test grade if you pass on the others. Very helpful and tells you everything that is on the test. Doesn't grade HW or attendance. Very good teacher for non math majors.
If you need to have your hand held through math, and are is awful in math as i am - he is NO help. He just gives 4 tests and goes over hw problems in class. So if you're good at this type of learning - then he's awesome for that...but i dropped it
GRIZZLY!!! NOO GOOOOOOD. He makes mistakes constantly
stufy and you will do fine
This man is crazy. He DOES NOT teach under any circumstances. He simply reviews the homework in class and asks if students have any questions. Avoid him if possible. Not to mention that he is very odd. He likes to talk about his bovine and his ovine.
Nicest guy ever! Very laid back, no attendance policy
Pretty laid back teacher. Has a pretty funny Southern accent. Class is VERY boring, he goes through the material pretty slowly. Tests are actually kinda hard. Try to find a better professor.
Seems very hard at first but once he warms up to the class he becomes very approchable. Only four tests, but he drops the lowest one. And no attendance policy is the biggest plus of them all. Can't be shy about asking questions in class!
Great teacher...teaches in a way impossible not to understand and his tests are simple...doesnt take attendence...tests are basically the same problems as the ones given for homework(dont have to do homework). went once a week, got an A
Avoid this apathetic moron like the plague. Retiring next year, so he doesn't put any effort into teaching, and it shows. Makes a point of never being available outside of class and doesnt even give notes during class. SAVE YOURSELF THE FRUSTRATION!!!!!!!
Coolest dude ever...yeah his class is boring but what stat class is exciting. Great guy and if you want him to help you, he will.
He goes over everything to make learning simple. Will go over anything you ask. If you approach him after class he will help you with any questions. VERY NICE
Funny guy, but horrible professor. Didn't learn anything from his lectures, so I stopped going. Take him if you are good at teaching yourself. I didn't even have professors this bad in high school.
Don't take him for 191!!! Awful teacher. Just dictates the book. No attendence. I'll be likey to get a D. Final is given by the department. Teacher doesnt prepare you for the final.
Stats is really hard. I took AP stats in highschool, and that was enough to get a C without going to class. Read the book and do the homework. Not a bad teacher, just a little slow. First 2 tests are easy, third is much harder.
He doesn't take attendence but his test are hard.
he was confusing
Made things so clear--great examples
Really nice, really good teacher. gives you the chance to get points back on tests -- helps out a lot!
His examples are long it takes him up to 45 min. for one problem. He can make you feel really stupid at times but overall he means well and is a good guy.
Dont let him scare you first day. Nice guy. Very thorough with explanations, but class can be VERY boring if you've already had calc. No attendance policy.DO HOMEWORK- problems show up on tests.
Great professor. Willing to go the extra mile for a student.
he takes one class to explain a single hw problem then another to go over an entire chapter...doesnt teach half of what u need to know. unless u took calc before dont take him
Run as fast as you can in the opposite direction of this guy.
Doesn't take attendance, great guy but bad teacher. He takes an hour just to do one problem and doesn't teach what ends up on the test...there is almost no point to go to class
I took calc 2 years ago. He teaches just about everything that's NOT on ANY exam. Takes several classes to go over homework problems. Got to the point where I didn't go for 2 weeks and we were still on the same chapter. JUST SAY NO!
He sucks, I got an F in his course. He doesn't do e-mail, phone, or mail. Avoid at ALL COSTS! Don't do what I did, take him because he is the only okay professor left, wait until next semester!! I wish I had!
You probably will learn this info quickly and well, but it doesn't matter because it's not even on his tests. I've taken calc before and his tests left me speechless. I went to talk to him about my grade and he made me cry in his office. DO NOT TAKE
it isnt that bad and im a slacker. he goes slowly, doesnt take attendence, and hes pretty nice ... i got a B and studied the night before
Terrible. Failed his class miserably. Doesnt email/phone, nothing. Tries to belittle and itimidate students, doesnt teach just goes over hw everyday. Better off taking your money and paying for a community college calc course elsewhere.
Great Prof! This class makes you an active learner! Have to go see him in person to take care of a problem and not just through email. Once he knows your face and notices that you are trying to learn, you will do fine!
I didn't like this class at all. everything you learn you will NEVER use in real life. says "like a lost ball in high grass" a lot. kind of grizzly. if you take him in the fall, tell him you are going to vote, he'll like that. avg. difficul
mountain man is good. Very differnt teacher but he basically give you all the test ? on review sheets.Easy B for not showing up half the time. If you put any effort its not hard to get an A
hes a very nice guy and well meaning, but he just doesn't know how to teach. he says the same things over and over. I think he's explaining it in terms that he understands but doesnt realize that no one else does
Funny guy in southern mountain man way, but repititious. Doesn't take attendence or collect hw, but do it anyways. I got an A on the 1st test (did all my work),then got arrogant and didn't do anything and got C ont the 2nd.Doesn't do email, so get over it and go see him during his office hrs.
funny..but repeats himself way too much
Mr. Adams is a great teacher. He tries to make math as fun as possible and is always cracking jokes about his days in sheep s***. The only drawback is that you can't use a calculator on tests. I would recommend him to anyone.
This man is an absolute scream. 2nd time taking the class and I still only have a high C. Math is certainly not my thing and his teaching style doesn't help! Only 4 tests...you must go to class to have a chance of doing well.
His teaching style isn't helpful if you are not good at learning math on your own. He has a quirky sense of humor but his jokes, especially about women and their "stupidity" are rather offending. He also doesn't motivate his students at all to learn. I would not recommend taking him for Math155.
Doesn't teach! Goes over homework and doesn't allow calculators on the test. Only 4 grades. Better do well on all tests to do good in the class. Definitely switch unless you are good at teaching yourself. :(
not so bad of a prof., but very repititious. he does expect students to teach themselves a lot though. hw is optional, but DO IT. thats been my mistake and i regret that. only 4 tests, and no calcs, so practice doing hw w/out calculators.
Horrible!! doesnt help, makes you totally confused.. way country guy and makes lots of references to the country. Makes algebra a lOT harder than it has to be, only four tests, no homework, no attendance policy but he is just crazy! almost seems like he is **** whenever he comes to class!!
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!! AHHHHH...if I would have known this before taking the class, I wouldn't have failed the class and had to take it over again another semester. He explains things in only ways that he understands. It is pretty obvious he really doesn't give a hoot about his students. BOOOOOO!
Terrible teacher. Just tells you to do homework and then has you ask questions on it. He never has any plans and is a very unclear teacher. All he does is go over your questions. The first test was the same as the practice test he gives you but I still failed.
He's a great teacher especially if you have trouble with math because he makes it much more simple and understandable. If you come to class and do the homework you will have no trouble doing well in his class.
This guy is god awful. I withdrew after the first test gettting a 32. There are only 4 Tests including exam. NO WP's or WF's so you must have an a decent average around the drop date to feel comfortable. He's anoying and talks like the Rooster from from Looney Tunes. Stay away from this man.
Adams is a good teacher! you just have to show up for class and do your work.. no attendance policy or homework.. 4 test.. i didnt do much work and have a B in his class not too bad
If you have never taken calculus before then DO NOT take his class!! He is a terrible teacher and sometimes refuses to answer questions in class!
this was my second try at math 205 after failing it with a different teacher and i'm getting an A in his class. the test questions are many of the same problems he assigns for hw. he even lets you get points back on exams if you show him your work after. most of the class is doing very well. he's very fair and wants everyone to do well! take him!
GREAT TEACHER. THIS IS MY THIRD TIME TAKING CALC AND I AM PASSING WITH A B. DEFINETELY THE BEST CHOICE WHEN IT COMES TO MATH 205 PROFESSORS. NO ATTENDANCE POLICY. TESTS ARE VERY CLEAR AND STRAIGHT FROM THE HOMEWORK.
Awesome teacher. Best calc teacher there is. Take him for a good grade and learning experience.
Great professor and amazing person! If you come to class, it can't get any easier. Take whenever possible - I took him for 3 different classes and got A's in all 3. I'm not a math person, but tests are straight from classwork...hint hint, go to class.
Adams is by far the best teacher in the math department. All comments are true about his tests and classwork. Take Adams and you will learn Calc.
He was an awesome teacher, definitely one of the best math teachers at JMU
He's the ****, he's thorough in his lectures and will help you if you need it. Very cool dude! His tests are easy and he tells you what you need to know. If you study then you will come out on top, the exams are all leading somewhere. Cheat sheet on his final!
Mr. Adams is awesome. dont listen to any bad comments that anyone might have written. They only failed because they never went to class. if you show up to class and make any effort whatsoever you will get an "A". He is funny and a great teacher. He gives you most of the test questions before the test. he's very southern and histerical!
He is good at what he does. Which is basically tell jokes that realte to real life scenario and also to actual Math, sometimes. He is funny and also his tests are basically what we do from homework, and also he tells us what will be on the test, and they are questions right off of the book, or things we talk about in class. Have fun in his class.
what a character! test questions taken from the review sheet; very helpful
the best math teacher ever..ive takes some form of calculus 3 times and this is the first time ive understood any of it.. he makes it so easy to understand and just a hilarious southern man...dont take 205 without him
Probably one of the best math teachers I've ever had. Really funny and knows how to teach the material very well. Attendance is not required so the only real reason to go to class is because he tells you exactly what will be on the test and what not to study from the book. Pretty cool guy.
Attendance isn't required, but you probably should go, especially the few before a test. He tells you exactally what you need to know for the tests, even the exact problems from the book. If you ask him a question, he'll gladly explain.
no attendance policy, final grade only based on 4 exams nothing else. tells you exctaly whats gonna be on exams, sometimes uses the same problems that he does in class on exams, gives partical credit on first 3 exams if you go see him in his office. you should get no less than a B if you go to class regularly and pay attention.
He's a nice teacher but he's hard to follow. He loves to tells stories that aren't relevant to math. The tests are fairly difficult unless you've already taking a calculus course. He doesn't have an attendence policy. He doesn't check hw but half the problems he assigns for hw are on the tests. Best to go to class a couple of days before the test
Doesn't own a computer/calculator/watch...you get the picture--this dude's old school (hand-written tests, nothing is typed). He's a funny and cool guy, the class was hard though (especially if you haven't taken calculus before). On the plus side, he reuses the same problems over and over again on tests--especially ones the class gets wrong.
Adams made this class my least favorite of my whole semester. He doesn't even have office hours, and he doesn't own a computer or have e-mail so that rules out that option as well. Overall, he doesn't teach anything and if you haven't had math in a while, good luck teaching yourself.
really nice guy but very unclear in his directions
Having Mr. Adams is like having your computer-illiterate grandfather as your teacher. He's nice, easy going, but pretty boring.
I didn't go to class much but whenever I did he told awful stories that had nothing to do with math, yet nonetheless taught the material well enough. As long as you put in the effort you'll do fine.
i took him for calc. i was repeat/forgiving the class so he wasnt that bad for me. but if ur taking him for the frist time, he doesnt fully explain things so get ready to teach urself. great giving out EC. esp on tests. hes not bad but try to get Galgano, shes the best
If you are going into this class as a refresher course, you're making a big mistake. He makes the information more confusing than it really is. It is much easier to learn from the book than to learn from him. He likes to tell the whole life story of problems, mostly because he likes to hear himself talk. He takes the whole class to do 3 problems.
Not a bad teacher. Barely anyone ever goes to class. If you are able to basically teach yourself math with little or no outside help I'd def. recommend this class. If you are one for lots of tutoring don't take him. Only 3 tests and the final.
...I have him again this semester for 205, so it's weird, and he is still computer illiterate and still refers to the books by the author's name and he is still hard and still has an annoying accent, but he is very helpful if you go to him, just take the time to get to know him and you'll be fine.
No attendance policy, but go to class! Only 4 grades... the tests... so do well on them! Go to his office hours and get points back on the tests if you show you have some correctness in your work, b/c he doesn't give partial credit initially. I got a 44 on the first test, but pulled off an A (he will help you out if you show improvement).
Take Adams for Math 205!! His test are so easy and the questions come right from his "assigned" problems. Only problem with the class is that there are only 4 grades, so if you do bad on one of the tests then your screwed. It is easy to get a B, but you have to work some for an A.
GREAT TEACHER. He is extremely clear about what needs to be learned, and as long as you learn it you'll be set. I never studied for this class and got an A, because he is extremely clear about what is going to be on the tests and explains everything really well in class.
Really funny teacher. I never went to class so I couldn't really tell you much else about him. I just studied from the book and did well enough (B-). I imagine if you go to class semi-regularly it would be pretty easy.
He is a mountain man. but really nice. college alegbra shouldn't be hard, but for whatever reason so many people have trouble passing with him. If you do the work you should be fine. He gives you a review sheet for every test which is pretty much the test. thats nice. not the worst, but not the best.
This man is really funny and easy going. His lectures are easy to understand, albeit somewhat repetitive at times. Don't be afraid to ask him to repeat something, because he won't mind explaining until you understand. It's really difficult to get a bad grade in this class if you pay attention to what he says (he gives out answers).
If you are a nursing major, and your advisor requested you take this class before Math 220, get into another section now. It is a waste of your time, and will only bring your gpa down. He is hilarious and a nice man, but he makes 8th grade math ten times harder than it needs to be, teaches one problem a class, and makes no sense.
He was a great teacher! He was funny and sarcastic and really tried to help people... a lot of people didn't like him because people in my class would ask the same question 10 times and he would get annoyed and show it! An EXTREMLY easy class, I stopped studying for the test and got an A.
He was a really funny teacher and explained things pretty well. Mostly went over homework problems, but the class was really easy.
The best teacher at JMU - period. Loves teaching, loves his students, loves his dogs, seems like a loves to drink. easy class with an awesome professor
the worst calc teacher. makes a pre calc level class extremely difficult. i took ap calc senior yr and nearly failed this class. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Grade is consists of only 4 exam grades. Attendence isn't mandatory, but going every day is recommended. Not a difficult class, as he tells you exactly what he wants for each exam. The guy plays it off like he doesn't take the class seriously for laughs, but you can tell he wants everyone to succeed as long as your willing to meet him halfway.
one of the most ridiculous people you will ever meet. you can tell he really wants his students to do well but when i went to his office hours i usually came out more confused then when i got there. he's extremely crazy but entertaining during class. i would recommend him. calc sucks no matter who you take.
this class is only 4 test grades so u have to do decent on them to get a good grade. adams is a nice guy and makes class enjoyable. tells u a lot of what is on the tests beforehand. compared to a lot of the other professors, i would reccommend him
The first post I wrote on Mr adams got deleted...so I am writing again. AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS. Don't even think you can reason with him & if you don't do well on atleast 2 tests, you are done.
I am a senior and I took 205 with him as a freshman, and reading these other reviews are pissing me off. This is BY FAR BY FAR BY FAR the easiest math teacher/class, so ignore anyone giving him a bad rating, b/c they probably have down syndrome. Highly recommend
Seriously... If you can't get at least a B in this class you shouldn't be in college...
Wow.. I can't believe what some of these other post say about him. I hate his class. He doesn't care whether you pass or fail his class. He's just ready to retire. A girl passed out right in front of the door and he said that someone else would deal with it. Just a really strange teacher.
You practically need to teach yourself everything in this class, he is not helpful at all !
the king of calc! I have no skill or mathematic ability, but I still manage to comprehend the subject bcuz of his laid-back attitude and great analogies. He basically tells you exactly what the exams will include, offers only the imperative HW problems, and teaches effortlessly. Class attendance not needed, but I go just to laugh at his funE insigh
Great guy, great teacher. Lectures are very clear. Adams is also hilarious and makes the class fun to attend. Study for the tests and you will do just fine in this class
at first i was terrified becuase i hate math, and he doesnt seem to teach well. BUT if you go to the math and science learning center and do all the HW problems.. then you are likely to get an A or B. He tells u exactly what is going to be on the test. so simply listen! if u actually want to learn math, take another teacher.
Hilarious man. Horrible teacher. Takes the easiest concepts ever & makes them impossible. Tests are easy cause he uses homework problems & lets you use your notes & book (therefore you'll need the book). Doesn't take attendance but if you skip too often you'll miss out when he says what's on the tests. If you're good at teaching yourself go for it.
Best math teacher I have ever had! I only attended 25% of the classes and still pulled off a good grade. Take him, you won't regret it. Grade consists of four tests and if you miss one he'll use the final exam grade. Super nice!
This class wasn't as easy as I hoped. He wants you to really grasp interpretations and word problems. Though, you can probably miss half the classes and still pull a B - he teaches the step by step examples that are already in the book. Funny guy and willing to help you in his office hours. Oh and no WPs, WFs, +s, or -s.
Manages to make the class easy and a complete pain at the same time. Has a ridiculous way of doing optimization. Is an annoying/ridiculous grader on tests, doesn't use the internet, class time is boring and kinda a waste. But he still manages to be a cool guy and his tests are easy. You should go to class he has his own way of doing calculus.
I am NOT a math person. If you arent either i wouldnt take him. He assumes everyone is a business major and already knows math. He's all about interpretation and if you cant do that youll fail each test. Each test is cum. and hes a hard grader. Hes a funny guy and he grades by how youre improving in the class not by your actual grades
Adams is a pretty generic professor. He rambles often and uses very obscure examples that talk about "the rules of the game." No attendance and only 4 tests. The final replaces a test if you miss one. He uses the book a lot at first the stops later but it helps to read it. Your grade is what you make of it. It's easy to fail but easy to ace too.
if you are not a math person, this could be a hard class for you. personally im a math person and am able to get A's on the tests without doing any hw and minimal studying. he tells a story while explaining every problem
Mr. Adams is a good prof. He breaks things down to make them as simple as he can. I'm NOT a math person and came out with a B. There are 4 tests and he tells you exactly what's on each. If you do all the practice questions he assigns and know them well you'll do fine. He tries to make Calc interesting. Use the math help center when you need it!
If anyone says this is a difficult class - they are saying that because they are morons - john adams is the man - first day he told he the secret of life is never get married and never get old...wisest man on earth..by the way he was also the second president
Horrible teacher. Everyday I let class frustrated. Doesn't work with you. Your entire grade is 3 tests and a final. Doesn't teach, just does problems asked. Does MAYBE 3 problems all class. Worst teacher I have ever had. Do not take!!!
Horrible teacher. Everyday I let class frustrated. Doesn't work with you. Your entire grade is 3 tests and a final. Doesn't teach, just does problems asked. Does MAYBE 3 problems all class. Worst teacher I have ever had. Do not take!!! I work hard but still didn't get the grade I wanted. I can't say enough bad things about this guy!
Seriously the WORST teacher I have ever had. He circles around a problem for twenty minutes saying the same thing so that we only get maybe five problems done per class. Absolutely HORRIBLE! I love calculus but this man does NOT tech it. Any calculus you may have learned before, throw it out of the freakin' window because to him, you're wrong.
Worst teacher at JMU. He doesn't care if you show up or do the work, there are 4 tests (including final). His grading his whatever he feels like it is. If you want a teacher and not just pick up a math book and learn from that, then don't take him.
Worst professor ever. Especially if you haven't taken any calculus before. Strongly advise you to take another professor.
If you have taken calculus before and have an understanding of the subject, then he is definitely the easiest calculus teacher, but if you've never taken calculus then DEFINITELY do not take him.. he explains the same thing for hours and is incomprehensible. 3 tests, a final, and no hw points. ONLY TAKE HIM IF U KNOW CALCULUS ALREADY!
Do NOT take if u tend to make small errors on tests BECAUSE HE GIVES NO PARTIAL CREDIT at least 7 out of 10 times! Has lousy attitude, openly says he "hates" grading. If u r good enough at Calc to not need ANY partial credit on math exams to earn a B or A SKIP ANYWAY (even if u delay taking 291 to Maymester) because there are better math teacher
ok this class is not that hard. I've been 8 times this entire semester and still have an A. no required attendance, and all you need is the book to understand it. he's really helpful in office hours if you go...it's really not that bad if you study before tests, and he will drop the lowest grade if you improve.
The person who said he gives no partial credit is 100% right. If you are good at Calc and rarely make small mistakes then it MIGHT be ok to take him to check off a prereq in the COB. But if you are prone to make small errors on Calc problems (and don't want to write near essays on his Exams) then drop him now or you WILL struggle to get a C.
He's the best teacher I've ever had! He always makes sure that we understand the material before we move on to the next subject and is willing to answer any questions. He's really chill and funny. Your grade is 4 tests including the final. TAKE HIM FOR COLLEGE ALGEBRA
It's true he's a bit stingy with partial credit, but if you do the work he assigns and participate in class, your scores will show it (4 exams make up your final grade). He likes to get the class involved and is willing to help (even though most people are too proud to ask). In my opinion, he's one of the better math instuctors.
Makes understanding the work clear, but is extremely dull. Tests aren't too difficult, 4 tests make up your grade. He isn't much help if you go to him during office hours.
Definitely one of the worst professors I have had. He is creepy, inconvenient, and difficult to understand. Avoid him at all costs.
Worst professor I've ever had. I went to office hours often and he would barely answer any questions and would kick me out if someone else wanted to talk to him. Blames our generation for bad test averages, not his teaching abilities. No attendance, 4 tests including the final all worth 25%. Homework isn't graded. DO NOT TAKE
I took AP Calc in High school and received an A, and then I took John Adams class and barely passed. HE IS A HORRENDOUS TEACHER. DO NOT TAKE MATH 205 WITH HIM! There was no attendance policy and classes were very boring. He cared more about you writing the definition of the derivative than actually knowing the subject material. Very frustrating.
Doesn't grade homework, but even for those strong in math, you'll find yourselves doing poorly. He doesn't teach... and he doesn't believe in email. He won't stay after class to answer questions. Realllllly boring.
Good teacher, but not easy. If you do the homework and go to class and become amazing friends with Mr. C in the math center you will do fine.
Absolutely terrible. He is more worried about you being about to memorize the definition of something than actually knowing what it means. The class itself isn't hard but he makes it way more difficult than it should be. I thought he'd be funny but he's just a jerk sometimes. I'd avoid him given the chance.
He tells you exactly what will be on the test. Every test is cumulative of what you have learned throughout the semester. There's no attendance policy but I would suggest going to class. I got a B with not a lot of effort. He doesn't give partial credit though which may hurt your exam grades.
Class isn't manditory but it's impossible to do well unless you go. Tells you what to study for the test. His tests are usually 20 questions and if you study it's not impossible. Grade is 4 tests including final but even if you fail a grade as long as you do well on the rest your grade will be good. I'd recommend taking him!
I absolutely loved this class. He could care less if you showed up but the majority of the class did. It isn't necessary to get the textbook as he doesn't check homework assignments at all but I strongly recommend doing them before you come to class. It helps sooo much. I learned more than just math from him. TAAAKE HIM!
Started off terrible at math, ended terrible at math. Test problems are ones he goes over but he buffs up the algebra in them which gave me a hard time considering my history in algebra. Only 4 grades and they're tests. Don't take if you have test anxiety.
John Adams is a funny guy. He makes sure everyone is paying attention. He doesn't really explain concepts well but he gives a lot of examples and you will never be surprised come test time. Take him!
Hes probably the coolest man youll ever meet, but you need to work hard to do well. No pluses or Minuses.. ANNOYING but hes worth the class. total mountain man
Avoid this teacher if you suck at math, like me. Has that whole "teach yourself from the book" thing going on. I withdrew as soon as I could. More than half my class did as well. No convenient office hours, refuses to use email. Is only on campus like twice a week. All he does is talk about "preparing for calculus"
Took him for algebra and he wasnt that bad. He's a very sarcastic guy and isn't afraid to say what's on his mind which i found very amusing. I hate math so this class was not enjoyable for me. but i got by okay. if you go to his office hours you most likely come out of there with a higher grade. i would reccommend him if math isnt a stuggle for you
Though he gives you the option, this is not a class that you can do no work in--that is, if you want a higher grade. If you are willing to work hard, then take the class. He is an incredible professor and truly understands the concepts that he is teaching. Go to his office hours and do the homework. Work hard and it will pay off.
I do alright in this class because I remember a lot of the concepts from high school. He's pretty funny but class drags on forever. You can't ever email him, and isn't on campus a lot, but he will find a way to help you if you need it. I wouldn't take him again, but I wouldn't recommend against him either. Good guy overall.
Everyone says you have to be willing to work hard, but I don't totally agree. If you've taken calculus before, then you'll be fine. If you haven't, I think his lectures are good. And I suggest doing the work, but it's not mandatory, and there's not much of it. I liked him - he's very transparent about what he wants on tests! Just go to class!!
Get ready to teach yourself, Class consists of 4 tests all weighted equally. attendance is optional but recommended. EXTREMELY BORING, rather watch grass grow. Shows one example the whole class and then goes off on tangents.
You will need the text book and two eyes. Mr. Adams is a swell guy and all but his lectures are all over the place, unclear, he doesn't finish example problems, and you end up teaching yourself the course. If you read the chapter and do examples for 2-3 hours a day you can do great on tests. But if you don't do that, your kinda screwed.
Don't know why anybody would ever complain about him. No quizzes or homework just three tests and a final. He's hilarious and makes you laugh every class. Never had to go to his office hours because the class was so easy. I never took Calculus before and I got an A on every test. Tells you what will be on each test beforehand. So easy.
Did not understand a thing this man taught us.
funny guy! you'll like him as a person. he tells you word for word what's going to be on the test... if you go to his office hours right before, you are golden. unless i got below a 80 on the final i'll have an A in the class with minimum work. TAKE TAKE TAKE TAKE TAKE
This is not an enjoyable class it's so boring and I can barely understand what he's saying because of his thick southern accent. If you've already taken calc then this class is fine but if you have never learned the concepts before then you will be so lost.
John Adams is a great professor if you attend classes and pay attention. The tests are really easy and he always gives some of the answers days before. He takes a long time to explain a concept sometimes but he does a good job overall. There are no quizzes. Homework is optional.
Professor Adams is great! I hate math, but he made the class extremely easy for me. As long as you come to class and do the homework problems, you will be fine. He is extremely funny, too. I definitely recommend this class!
WORST TEACHER EVER. Be prepared to teach yourself. He's a funny guy but does not teach well at all. Do the homework problems to learn. Avoid him at all cost!!!
Does not teach you calc you are screwed for the future in calc. Makes up terms and pharses that no one has heard of and are not in the book. Very nice man, but very poor teacher I do not know how has kept his job for so long. Avoid if you want to learn calc.
Professor Adams was one of the best teachers I have had. Honestly as long as you attend every class and take notes you will get an A on the tests. If you don't go to class then you miss major concepts and won't do well on the tests. He explains everything very well and is so helpful during his office hours! Take his class! You won't regret it!
Course material was tough for me, but if you have prior calc experience, the course should be a breeze. His tests are easy to predict. Just make sure you know the concepts.
Mr. Adams is one of the best teachers I have had in my short time at JMU. He is funny in class and, even though he can be unclear at times, you will learn something. Your grade is just 3 tests and a final but they build on eachother and you know what will be on them ahead of time. A lot of questions repeat, also. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Doesn't really do a whole lot of "teaching" but he's a funny dude. Makes a lot of jokes but you kind of have to teach yourself the material after he mentions it. He tells you exactly what will be on each test which is definitely helpful and a lot of the questions are repetitive of previous tests. Easy course if you show up.
Mr. Adams is a really cool teacher. Your only grades are 4 tests so if you get test anxiety, don't take it with him. He tells you pretty much what's going to be on each test, but you kind of have to teach yourself. Basically, he's a toss up.
I took precalc in HS. So the deal was I didn't understand his teaching period. He had PASS sessions VERY HELPFUL. Also do the hw bc almost all the problems are the same as the text. Not an awful course to be in. If you do poorly on the first exam he may drop it as long as your other 3 tests are the same grades.
John Adam's is an interesting man to say the least. He sounds like Foghorn Leghorn, but its not anything that interferes with understanding him. The class is 4 tests.. thats it, so if you get bad test anxiety DON"T TAKE HIM. The tests are made up of problems that have been done in class and on homework, so there are no surprises. Easy B if you try
Definitely recommend this professor. Sometimes he explains things in a way that make them seem more complicated than they really are but he tells you what to expect on every exam so there are no surprises. Doesn't care if you show up to class or not but it is more beneficial than not to attend. Also very entertaining!
He's a hilarious guy. He doesn't really teach you have to kind of teach yourself and go to the PASS sessions but its an easy B. A tough A.
Do not skip class!! Attendance isn't mandatory but he gives away a lot of hints for the tests. Your overall grade is from 4 tests. The tests are questions from the homework and the handouts. Great professor! And willing to help. Easy to get an A, only if you go to class!!
He looks exactly like the Dude from the Big Lebowski. He has some great stories about teaching calculus to rednecks. The class is like calculus from high school so make sure you go over the material pretty well. The grade was only 3 tests and the final so definitely study and you should be fine.
I withdrew because I seriously could not get up for his morning classes, but that's beside the point. If you don't do the homework, you won't understand anything in the long run. Be ready to pay attention and take notes the WHOLE TIME. Never ends early and always has something to say. Nice man, just not the right class for me.
He's a pretty easy going guy, gives you the tests from previous years to study (which are basically the exact same as the tests). He also gives you lots of "Hints", write these down because 910 they will be on the test. It was a pretty easy A as long as you went to class and paid attention.
His lectures are so LONG and so BORING. Attendance wasn't mandatory but you cannot skip class because he gives out hints for all of his tests during lecture. The whole grade is four tests, and they're super easy as long as you do the homework. As long as you can be patient and not be super lazy, I completely recommend.
I didn't think Madison and Adams saw eye to eye, but it's nice to see that he respected Adams enough to hire him.
Attendance is not mandatory, but he hints a ton about tests during lecture so if you want to do well go to class. Not super hard as long as you do homework and go to class. Extremely smart man.
He is a funny professor but impossible to keep up with. He teaches directly from the book and just does problems on the board expecting you to know what is going on. His tests are real tough.
One of the wisest and smartest professors out there. He's hilarious and breaks down Calc so fundamentally its your own fault if you don't understand. Every test problem is one he went over in class at some point so go even though he doesn't care about attendance.
Dr. Adams is undoubtedly bright and fun, however his lectures are hard to follow unless you take the time to read his book. He goes fast during the lecture and it is hard to keep up at times. Do not expect this class to be an easy A.
Literally a joke of a class. Also if you get A's (at least a 90) on the three tests, he doesn't make you take the final. Really funny and enjoyable guy! Take him.
Class was a joke. Reminded me of the cartoon rooster Foghorn Leghorn. Went to class half the time and ended with a B. 3 Tests and a final. If you enjoy calc then take another prof.
Mr. Adams is a great guy, he will always be there to help students who seek it out. Also if you talk to him enough and get to know him he WILL go easy on you on tests! I went to office hours once and he gave me points back on my test just for asking what I did wrong. The answers he looks for on tests are very specific, make a study group.
Mr Adams is funny. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours. Tests are a little bit tough but if you study really hard, you should come out of the class with at least a B. You gotta go to class everyday in order to get the material.
Professor Adams seems like a really intimidating guy when you first meet him, but if you go to his office hours and show that you are putting effort into his class, he will become your best friend. Does not assign homework, but your grade is made up of only 4 tests, which aren't that hard if you go to class. I would definitel take this class again.
Very easy A if you put in the work. He tells you exactly what will be on every test you just have to know how to do the problems and you'll be fine. There are PASS sessions which are extremely helpful. Your only grades in the class are 3 cumulative tests and a final which aren't bad at all. He curves a good amount at the end.
If you go to class, he gives you exactly what to expect on the test. Gives practice problems he puts directly on the test. Also offers a PASS review sessions basically giving identical problems for the test. He's extremely helpful to anyone showing up to office hours and SO UNDERSTANDING. definitely would recommend.
He's the best. I can see why he has reviews that are negative because I really don't think I've learned much Calc. If you're looking just to fill a gen-ed requirement, highly recommend. He tells you EXACTLY whats on the test, go to class and you'll know. If you miss a test he'll just count your final twice. Great man, may fall at one point
Adams is a good teacher. You have to go to class though, and really get the material down, and you will do fine. He offers PASS sessions that are very helpful. His test are straightforward but if you don't prepare well enough for them then you won't do well. Doing well in the class is all on you, he prepares you very well.
This guy is the man. If you have to take 205 take it with Adams.
This is my second time taking this course and Prof Adams is the sole reason that I'm passing. If you put in the effort to learn the material (go to class, go to office hours, do the hw), he's more than willing to help you out. He grades on how you improve throughout the year, not necessarily the grades you get on exams. Super great guy!
You're graded on 4 Test you take, all which are cumulative. Lectures are a bit hard to follow but if you go to the PASS review sessions you will have no problem passing the class. A great calculus class for Business majors.
The prof has been very good, helpful in making understanding the concepts. I enjoyed his classes
Funny and charismatic. Slow lectures which can be boring, and will often go on tangents in class. Good at explaining concepts and is glad to help.
By far my favorite teacher. He makes Calculus so easy and tries to make sure everyone passes. Your actual grade likely wont be the grade you get. For example if you get a C he will give you a B. He only teaches the basics. I'd get to know him not only because he is very nice but also because if you show you care he will help you out. TAKE HIM!!!
Worlds nicest man! He wants everyone to pass calc because he knows it can be hard. He teaches the basics and thats it. He grades very easily too. As long as you show improvement, even if you scored 60 then 70 then 80 youll likey get a B with how he grades. I failed calculus before with Radloff, and now am going to get an A in Adams class. Great guy
Such a chill and nice man. No required homework, really helpful pass sessions, and tests that aren't too hard plus he curves. The tests are a little harder than the lectures would make them seem but they are definitely manageable. Definitely recommend.
Honestly if you can't get an A in this class, it's your own fault. I have never taken calculus before and am finishing with an A. Adams will straight up tell you "this is going to be the first question on the exam". Super adorable and hilarious. 4 exams and that's it, so go to lecture because he doesn't like canvas or technology in general.
He grabs a six pack and goes out on his bull dozer in the woods when his wife annoys him. This man is hilarious and if you go to the pass sessions theres no reason not to get an A. The tests are like 20 short answers that I finished in about 30 minutes. Super easy A, great man.
This old man is seriously so adorable! He truly cares about his students and wants everyone to do well. 4 tests make up your final grade and he normally raises your final grade up a letter grade. Attend class even though it's not mandatory because he doesn't use Canvas and he'll tell you everything on the test. Also, PASS is super helpful.
Hilarious guy. I am going to miss having him as a professor. The class was pretty easy for the most part. He only grades by having 4 tests, but there pretty basic for the most part. Going to PASS is very helpful. Overall, nice and hilarious.
The lectures can drone on forever but go to the pass sessions in order to get a clear and cohesive summary. Adams is hilarious and tells you exactly what is on each test. Even lets you bring an index card on the final. Does not use technology whatsoever but still has office hours early in the morning. Intimidating at first, but easy to talk to.
Adams is so great; you HAVE to take him! He is such a down-to-Earth, funny guy who likes to engage the whole class, even the people in the back. Just 4 tests, and the lowest can be dropped and your best can be double-counted to replace the dropped one (per his course policy; save it in your folder for reference). The best choice for Bus. Calc!!!
Super nice guy and pretty funny loves to interact with everyone. Definitely, need to show up to class but it's an easy class to sit through because he really wants everyone to enjoy it.
