Quizzes and tests are difficult and examples given in class are on a very simple basic level. He provides formula sheet for the test but they are mainly accounting formulas, not financing formulas so you have to memorize all of them. Would recommend another professor.
Professor is incredibly vague as to what will actually be on the test. He has a fun way of presenting a problem, showing a formula, but then teaching from the calculator which does a good job of confusing the entire class. No cheat sheets, tons of formulas to memorize, tests are very hard, and minimal curving. DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Very boring lectures, but that's the material. Attending is helpful just for learning to use calculator and for any surprise exam stuff. Gave 12 online quizes and dropped 2 lowest. 3 midterms and a final all mult/c - usually 3 to 6 point curve. Class is very easy if you study book and work his online reviews. Only need occasional notes from class.
Don't take this professor. He knows the material but he's not very good at teaching it clearly. Examples given in class are easier than test questions.
I enjoyed Professor Adams' class his lectures go fast but if you can keep up he works through almost any problem you will see on the test and gives favorable curves on the tests. Come to class and study for the tests and you will do well in the course.
he has a nice presence, but he is not good at instruction. The notes he provides for test are vague, if you are not a finance major his lecture style is eared towrds students who are finance majors.
He is terrible. He is the least helpful professor I have ever had. Dont even bother asking him any questions via email. He will be rude and refuses to help. UTA needs better finance professors. He is the worst. He is also a lot harder than others, gives a lot of hw, expects a lot, and refuses to help. STAY AWAY. One of the worst professors I've had
This is a hard subject! Hit the ground running. Listen in class. Attend all lectures, do homework (every week w/few exceptions) do not slack! That is what is required for this class. He does extra credit (1.5 points) and drops a quiz. Not Easy...but I feel better for having completed his class. Idk other professors styles but he made you earn grade
Tests and homework are nothing alike. Does not allow notecards or formula sheets so they must all be memorized. He is passionate about the subject though.
I agree with the comment prior to mine. He seems friendly enough in class, but his responses to emails are short and meaningless. He did assign a very difficult and time-consuming project in the last two weeks of class which was due during the first week of final exams.
Cool guy, but he's hard. If you're overall smart and can self teach this class will be easy. His teaching style sucks and homework is nothing like the teaches or the tests. Don't recommend
He also does NOT give any exam reviews. He will teach to the very last minute before every test. Homework and classwork is different than exams. Teaches a problem only once and moves on. He will only curve so the class will average a 75 for each exam and also for the course even if it is a 1 point curve. RUN FAST!!!!
You will learn mainly from the book just as you did in the accounting class you had to take as a prereq for this class. You will also be assigned homework problems on the MyLab platform (these are really helpful). You will learn to master the financial calculator in order to survive. 3 Exams + Final are all MC. 1 Project.
Very easy A
I found Prof. Adams to be very helpful. The course material is a bit difficult but if you come to class prepared and ready to ask questions it's not too difficult. He also gave real-life examples that were interesting. I would recommend him.
This man expects you to learn 85-90 % of the material via the textbook. His lectures are usually very dull and have no real importance to when it comes to test time. Don't expect a review, don't expect to have him help you out, and don't sign up for this god awful class.
It baffles me that professors like this still even have a job. Homework might seem easy but the tests are the exact opposite. His idea of "teaching" is to make students do problems in class that half of the time, everyone guesses on. I always aim for A's but with this class, I couldn't care less and just want to be over with it. AVOID THIS CLASS
I feel like I've been set up to fail with this prof. Tests are NOTHING like the homework and he expects you to teach yourself. Lectures do not cover test material and when I sought guidance from him his feedback was worthless and he didn't seemed to care. I expect a B from this class I know going into MS I'm doomed. Thanks prof for the worst class!
He is very very lazy. Everything in his class is not clear. He made a lot of mistakes in everything. The class should not be hard, but he made it very confusing. Try not to take him for any classes.
I'm not really sure why Adams has such bad reviews on here. I didn't expect this class to be a breeze, and it wasn't. Basically all the test material is from the Dynamic Study Modules, Learning Catalytics, and HW. Adams expects you to take an active role in learning the material, do that and you'll do fine.
Worst professor in the world, extremely hard exams, he's very lazy, does not help, weekly homeworks take about 3 hours, 3 projects all semester long, modules take 45 minutes weekly, quizzes are hard, he does not care. He shouldn't even be teaching
Homework is mandatory, long, and a waste of time. Nothing on the homework is on the test. He gives extra credit for doing extremely time consuming study modules online which for a few extra points I didn't think it was worth it. There's a project which you're basically on your own with since he didn't help nor set clear instructions for.
No point in attendance since I went to every class and it didn't help. You are better off reading the text from home. He is not helpful at all & doesn't care to elaborate. Only people that understood what what happening were finance majors & even they had many questions. Makes the class harder than necessary a lot of busy work but no learning value
Definitely doesn't make you feel important but he curves like crazy because class averages on tests are in the 50's. I was failing almost all semester and made a B for final grade. Lots of homework and a big capital budget project, do not miss class on days where he explains those instructions or you will be in the dark. Record lectures
Professor Adams definitely makes you work for the grade you receive. Be prepared to understand in class lectures, homework, and the textbook in order to be able to do well on the exams you must study all three. Class takes a lot of time, but ultimately it is very attainable to do well. Ask him for help and he will gladly explain things.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I DONT CARE IF HAPPENS TO FIT YOUR TIME SLOT AND YOU THINK "OH IT'S FINE BECAUSE I HAVE A REALLY EASY LOAD THIS SEMESTER." The man LITERALLY does not teach. You teach yourself by doing hours of homeworkreading. Treats lecture like a GAME SHOW. THE TESTS MAKE YOU WANNA DROP OUT. Refuses to give direct answers. THE MAN'S A SADIST.
ATTENTION INSY Majors! Don't take Adams. There is way too much assigned. Study Modules, HW, Quizzes for 15 Chapters, 3 Projects, HARD Tests, Book+Calculator+project$300 extra. He does curve but you'll worry all semester. He knows his stuff, but won't help you learn, instead the computer will teach you, and the tests won't be as easy.
Adams is by far the worst professor I have taken so far in the business department. His class is like a online game show, you show up to class and login online and pick a,b,c,d answers to questions he posts on the board. Tests are tough two big projects worth a lot of points and he grades them very hard. Stupid WACC project, TVM papers, HW
Not a typical classroom environment, lectures are intertwined with online questions that are counted as part of your grade. This class is very hard, the tests and the projects are the most difficult. He grades very hard. He did explain difficult concepts in a way that made a lot sense to me. He gives some extra credit, and curves test quite a bit.
This is a tough class for non-finance majors anyways. But John Adams is absolutely not helpful at ALL. He always replies with another question. He's style of teaching is good, but has no sense of the classes progress. He grades on 1 mid-term, 1 final, Hmk, Learning Catalytic's and DSM (myfinancelab). Be sure to do the work. It saved by grade.
The course itself is BS if you're not a finance major anyway. Uses MyFinanceLab. Quizzes replace tests but they're tough. You NEED a financial calculator to do well. Will say that you're probably learning by yourself through reading than by lecture (which you should attend to earn points through Catalytics anyway.) Waste of time but UTA requires it
The course isn't too bad. You do have to complete online hw and study modules for each chapter. Also, class consists of very little lecturing and a lot of learning catalytics, you login online and answer questions. I actually enjoyed it. There is only one exam (the final exam), but there are frequent online quizzes that can be tough!
Okay, I'm not sure why he's getting so much hate on here. I thought this guy was awesome. He made the material relatable, and his quizzes are easy to ace if you follow along in class. Overall a great professor. Funny too. If you decide to take him, do expect homework though. And definitely show up and pay attention--you'll thank yourself later.
I wish he would actually use class time to teach the material, instead he uses learning catalytic. You have homework for every chapter, a few quizzes, dynamic study modules, and the final. If you actually want to learn something you have to sit down and teach yourself.
Pre-Quizzes, homework, and quizzes every other week. The Final is your only exam, but the bi-weekly quizzes are equally weighted as the final. Pretty tough course but personally I just didn't like the teaching strategy used by this professor.
Adams is a good teacher for this class. He is humorus and class work involves learning catalytics done online. We had 7 quizzes, 13 homeworks & Dynamic study modules (all done online, one for each chapter we covered). Quizzes were averaged and weighted the same as the final. If you go to class and do the work you can pull an A in this class.
If you have the option to take a different professor; you probably should. This class was taken online and the teacher does not provide you with enough materials to teach yourself. The Excel Files are very difficult without instruction and he is very strict on his grading. Both the Midterm and Final are taken in the testing center without a book.
HW and dymanic modules for every chapter on myFinanceLab, 7 quizzes, and in class learning catalytics. One comprehensive final and an easy but time-consuming project due at the end of the semester required by the FINA dept. I suggest you do all your HW and dymanic modules to keep your grade as high as possible before the final. Difficult class.
teach it yourself class, many assignments due every class. unfortunately none of those assignments will prepare you for the weekly quizzes. only one exam - the final which is worth 30%. lectures are boring but attendance is mandatory
avoid this professor at all costs. 3 absences and you get an automatic F. you HAVE to read at least 2 chapters in advance. he has in class questions that add up to 20% of the grade. he half ass explains what to do and when he's done he gives you 30 secs to answer so you either miss the explanation to google the answer or miss the question. (1/2)
miss the class 3 times fail. make sure you knock out all the DSMs right away. they're on a study card site. do all the homework. majority of the class will fail the quizzes so most will be make ups. get your grade as HIGH as possible before the final; then brace for the 10 point drop. go into the final, and just guess. thats what i did :)
This class involves a lot of busy work, and if you miss 3 classes you do fail, I wouldn't have been able to pass if I missed classes anyway. Fina is hard, but just like opma, bstat, & acct it'll be time consuming. Adams was a great professor, he worked through almost every question with us, if you are willing to show up everyday take this class!
Grade is based on comprehensive final (40%), midterm (10%), 4 quizzes (10%), learning catalytics (20%), dynamic study modules (10%), MyFinanceLab homework (10%). Lots to do every day. Only the final, makes it tough to know if you should drop. Miss 3 classes, automatic F.
Very difficult but he gives a curve on the final, which is the only test, so it ended up being ok. Have to go to class though, he drops you if you miss more than 2 classes, and there are daily questions during class which are a big part of your grade and can really help you. He's not the clearest professor but he wants you to pass.
So we just had our final, and it wasn't bad - nothing we hadn't covered in homework or class, but it requires a LOT of study and prep. He also gave a good curve at the end, and an extra credit opportunity. He is good at teaching, and gives every opportunity to succeed and pad your grade with hw, etc. leading up to the final. I recommend him.
This was my first finance class and I'm thankful I had Adams. Attendance is mandatory, but he made classes go by quick. Very intelligent man and gives lots of real life examples. Gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Grade is based off of effort, in my opinion. Most of the grade is from your final, which he still curves at the end.
Adams was a great professor, one of the least boring lecturers I've had. Accounting Info Systems is an easy class to begin with if you know how to use a computer. Either way he seems to have a lot of real knowledge about the subject and gives great examples. Quizzes were very easy, straight from the book and three tries. Reviews were accurate.
Adams was very enjoyable b/c he teaches through a conversation style rather than reading from powerpoints. He is very knowledgeable and encourages you to ask questions during class because you cover a lot of info and he truly wants you to succeed. The final is worth 40% but if you go to class he gives you everything you need to be prepared.
worst class I've even been in. never got lower than a B in my life until this class. awful. do not take this class online whatever you do. hardest final.
too tough on grading , not ready to work with students on tests preparation, too many assignements,
Do yourself a favor and don't take this class online. Worst decision of my college career. Difficult test and even more difficult final. You basically had to go back through all the old homework assignments to study for that final.. and that still didn't help.
Worst professor I've ever had. I had him in class and he didn't prepare us for any of our quizzes nor our final. Made the final worth 40% of our grade and didn't set us up for success. I walked into the final was an A and got a C in the class. Told us if we had three absences, we fail the class automatically. He also forgot to show up for midterm.
This was his online course which was really well made and organized. There is a lot of homework and three essays. Most people including myself were not prepared for the final at all. He did offer a chance to improve grades by reworking old practice quizzes, I was able to get an A after getting a 68% on the final.
I enjoyed this class online. I think I probably should have taken it on campus since it is difficult and time intensive subject, but that wasn't working with my schedule. I did change my major to finance because I did enjoy this course and the teacher and his TA were very quick to respond to questions via email or bulletin boards.
Do NOT make the mistake of taking from this professor! 4+ hour quizzes every week, and material is not taught so get ready to teach yourself.... Also, we have group essays. I am literally about to drop his class because it is too time consuming.
Took online, not gonna lie its very consuming. The homeworks alone on myfinancelab take about 1-2 hours each, exams take about 2 hours. all exams require lockdown and final exam can either be in person or through webcam. the exams test over everything covered in homework/mostly fill in the blank math questions
Don't take him, homework is not even homework assignments they're quizzes and you must score an 80 or better before opening the next quiz and test can't be taken until you do all the quizzes. There are 3 group essays. There is a TVM assignment (13 pages). All test are lockdown browser. Final is over webcam ($20 fee) or on campus.
I do not recommend taking this professor. He has great credentials, but the work load is absurd. you will spend 3-4 hours on over half the HW. Must work thoroughly and efficiently because you have to make a 80 or above to move to the next assignment. 70% of the class made F's on final... NO CURVE. grade dropped from an 82 to a 65 :'(
Bros and Brodettes for the love of your sanity stay away from this professor . Homework is very time consuming ( especially if taking at least 12 hours in a semester) . You must make a 90% on all hw assignments to even take the test and preparing for his tests are torture . Stay away
This Class is departmental and is one of the worst classes I have taken at UTA . I mean I understand making a class "challenging" but dude they need a change at the head or something because its ridiculous man.
FINA is departmental so its a difficult course. However, I loved John Adams! He was a great professor and I am glad I took his online course. His online videos for the modules were very helpful! Do the study plan questions with Pearson and you should do fine in the class.
There's 4 exams including the final. The TVM has been the same since 2017 so if you have a friend that has done it, just use theirs. Tests are the same as the homework which is through pearson. It's a tough class, sort of like the level of difficulty with accounting at UTA.
It's a lot of work and very tedious but it helps you get use to using TVM. The majority of it is TVM and some concepts. Focuses on a lot of calculations. It's manageable if you stay consistent so don't procrastinate.
All exams are proctor and it's extremely hard
Professor Adams has one of the most well organized classes at UTA. He quickly responds to emails and has detailed information online to help with homework.
Got multiple 50%'s on Excel worksheets although there was only one cell wrong. His comment was that he didn't have time to grade the papers so he just checked one cell. if you did it and got that one cell wrong, you ended up with a 50% for something worth almost a letter grade.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR PLEASE! I read the ratings here for him here, it was the biggest mistake I've ever made my entire college career! BIGGEST SCAM EVER!! Not only does he tell everyone to drop if you have questions, but he chills in florida (during a pandemic) and leaves everything to us. The TA grades super harsh! RIP SPRING 2021!
I have never in my 4 years of undergrad have EVER written a rate my professor review. But when I tell you to avoid this professor. AVOID HIM. The load work there is to this class every single week. HW 20%. Exams 75%. No curves, no reviews, nothing to help students out. Tests are on ProctorU (someone watching you) , have to pay to take exams.
I really enjoyed taking this course with Dr. Adams. It's departmental, so I'm pretty sure the workload is going to be the same, no matter which professor you take (which is decently heavy). Do all of the work and make sure you're able to do all of the problems in the modules before the exam and you'll be more than fine.
A good professor, he might come off dull sometimes but he teaches what you need to know
He was the best option for finance and although I did not get the grade I wanted. That is more on me than him, he has a lot of information laid out for students to succeed, it' just the class is hard. I will say the excel sheets are a pain but that is really the only objective knock I have on the class. Fina is hard but he's the best to take with.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. His instructions are never clear and he is very unorganized. We were made to pay just to unlock the modules and also have to pay for the proctor exams even after we paid for all of it in our tuition. He wasn't present during the in-class exam he sent a TA who was completely unhelpful.
Lots of assignments
DO NOT take Prof John Adams. First, know that the course is written by him and a co-author. Next, know that he teaches everything through excel in the lectures and modules, you have todo everything long hand on the test. 75% test grades Lastly, be prepared for 8+ hours of work for each chapter with lecture, module reading, quizzes and test.
RUN the other direction! impossible summer class. I do not see how this guy has a single decent review. His lectures are pointless, he uses excel for what I consider every hard problem. But no not you, you must use good old fashion paper and pencil. He could care less about your success! He gets pleasure in his class being "most dropped" @UTA.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. If you are looking to take a finance course over the summer, then wait. It is not worth it to try to get ahead if you have to go through this teachers curriculum. Ridiculous amount of assignments and completely pointless materials. RUN!
Took 5 weeks in summer. It's not that hard. Exams are just like multiple choice quizzes. Final was harder, so do well on the first 2. It is just going through modules, reading text, and answering quizzes which you have as many attempts as you like. His excel lectures are useless most of the time. Huge curve at end. He is a good prof just plan ahead
He is not helpful and is condescending. He doesn't teach anything and doesn't want to answer questions.
Pros: I appreciate the organization and how content is laid out over the course. Curving is based on your ranking in class. You get a notecard for tests Cons: Professor has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. You have to pay to access the modules, And pay to be proctored on top of what you paid in tuition. No backtracking on tests for some reason??
TOO MANY ASSIGNMENTS!! Didn't pay attention to any of his lectures. Forced to buy the book and never used it. Very organized. Dry jokes. 1st exam - little concepts, 2nd - concept heavy so I bombed it. Das why I have a B. To summarize, pretty easy class. Just do the assignments and study concepts. Exams allow open notecards. Final is comprehensive.
With this being a heavy workload online course in general, this professor explains each finance concept thoroughly and possesses a lot of knowledge in the subject. Dr. Adams is more than willing to hold proposed Teams sessions for needed questions and effectively explains what level of effort is required to successfully pass the course. Recommended
Mr. Adams is a very tough Professor. The Tests are difficult with no study guides given and they are 75% of your grade, He only uses Excel while making you use calculator + pen and paper for test. After test 1 his "Textbook" is useless and doesn't relate to the Hw or quizzes. Take 10-20hrs per week to study and do hw and you'll pass
2nd time taking class. class is departmentalized so professors are limited with how they do exams. DO EVERY HW ASSIGNMENT/QUIZ AND SCORE 100% IF IT ALLOWS YOU MULTIPLE TRIES. TRUST ME. YOULL WISH YOU DID BY EXAM 3. DO GOOD on exam 1. exam 3 be prepared to drop 10 points in course avg. curve at end but unknown bc based on percentile. I made a C or B
This professor really cares, and I think sometimes because these professors are so smart to the point, they don't know how to teach students with no background. He really cares, and he is always of help. Since it is at a department level, he only can do so much.
I enjoyed Prof Adam's lectures, he was respectful and went through the slides. I did have an issue when it came to the test because it was very difficult to study for. A lot of the learned material did not match the tests. Prof Adams warned us saying it's due to the tests being from the department. However, if you do the HW you should be fine..
