He loves derivatives and will make you hate it!
He's ok. I can't blame him for failing to make calculus fun.
always out of topic
This course is to hard. I had to take it twice to pass.
knows his stuff, may take more than high school effort to pass.but, good teacher

Lectures are of very little value. Bring back Lisi to teach the course.

its all about the homework...

This guy ruined my life as well.
I almost had to take this course 3 times!
HAHAHA.....thats what i did when i saw my mark...then i realized i was awake:O!!
he is stupid he does not speek english and he does not know how to say root two
Everyone who thinks he sucks did pretty bad in his class due to their laziness.
lectures useless, its the TA's that do the real teaching,go to ALL the tutorials
Anyone with something bad to say about Alexander, is just LAZY! Do your homework
he makes me hate math even more... it takes more than just the homework to pass
Very helpful. If u did bad, u were LAZY! Tests straight from notes/homework.
v. helpful....tests are challenging but u can def get a good grade if u do ur hw
i took his class twice and his jokes are also recycled... not funny at all
tests are not just from the homework, require !Q of 170+
he dont know kalkulus
I do all the homework, go to tutorials, go to class and Im still doing poorly. Hes not very clear, his examples suck and are way too complicated, the tests are much more difficult than the homework, the TAs arent very helpful, those quizes are ****.

sigh....i took his class again; grrr. so pissed! i work hard, but his course is horrible!last test=nasty! can only get marks for last q if could do 1st part. so lost 20% of the mark! while the rest of the Q was easy! first part was hard... so impossible
I didn't understand a word he said. Antiderivative sounded like antique radio!!
Beware.......not a nice welcome to university life
Damn......If I could understand what he says......then i think i could have done good in his class....Do not believe anything he says about tests being easy...this guy makes KAALKULUS suck big time
He may be hard to understand, but so are most profs. His course is a repeat of highschool so he ought to make the tests harder. For anyone who is having trouble it's probably just because you don't like calc or aren't any good at it.
People who get lower than 80% in this class only because they suck
DON"T TRUST HIM. Doing your homework is not enought to get a GOOD GRADE. His tests are killer. 02/03 year's exam had like 9 questions and on top of that 40 MULTIPLE CHOICE...compared to Mat138 (the supposedly "harder" calculus") onl
He gives us TONS of examples yet to learn calculus effectively, a student needs to understand the calculus first! Throwing examples at us is not going to help a great deal.
Excellent lecturer. Wish I had him for all my first year classes.
his tests are horrible, the questions you get in homework are not necessarily the ones he uses to test you on...
I like his teaching style. His accent gets in the way sometimes but i like the fact that he shows examples. you're supposed to read the material before going to lecture. his tests are killers though. v. nice guy, v. helpful.
Don't take this personal, he's a nice guy. And a great lecturer since he's been one for 25 years. BUT, when you have an ACCENT, please please please USE THE MIC! I hardly understand a thing due to the lecture theatre's size and the accent. So, MIC ON!
he is a horrible teacher. hes a nice guy and tries to be helpful but you cant understand a word he says. The tests are way harder than any of the homework and contrary to what he says if you do all the homework you are not guaranteed a good mark
know his stuff, talks to fast, but easily aproachable during his office hours

extremely nice guy at his office hours. doing homework doesn't guarantee a good mark, it's all about luck that he puts easy questions which is almost never. 02/03 test final was so hard when so many people failed they had to drop 10 marks from the exam
hes ok... bad accent.. but notes are ok.. same as test
No Comments
his style is too formal and he goes too quickly to follow
overhead notes are good...explanation is bad...
HATE HIM!If there's some1 that knows how to kill ur self esteem...it's HIM! Don't bother going to him for help b/c most likly he'll tell u thst "ur stupid".
Maybe he has been doing this too long. Terrible teacher. Knows his stuff but cannot convey. Tests are brutal.
1st year calculus is designed to screw ppl who won't work hard in next 4 years. So if you get above 80 in his course, you'll do well in next 3 years until you graduate. Profs don't teach Math. Practice does!! please understand
Unfair marker, takes pleasure at watching students struggle and fail!
Hes a guy whos passionate about math but projects it in a way which is rude. All in all, he knows his weaknesses and gives u the chance to do good as long as u do ur homework.
He seems to have a passion for calculus which is nice, but he is extremely ineffective as a professor. His tests do not in any way reflect concepts learned in the homework.

his lectures are well-paced. he's passionate. he moves his hands and legs a lot. he covers everything you need to know. he's systematic. his tests are hard, yes, but it's only fair since he gives everyone a shot at acing them if they work hard enough.
says 'Similarly' 20,000 times throughout the year....
I can't believe this man is still teaching! MAT 132 was the lowest grade that I had in 4 years of university.
mercy = .000001 ml
John Alexander is okay - he could do with a lesson in manners and clarity in teaching. He goes too fast and discourages students, which is the worst thing you can do to first years:P Worst teacher I've had for calculus - ever!
MAT 132 students: don't let Alexander's quizes and tests fool you, he's out to get you on the final exam!
Alexander's great....even if you don't get the calculus and are not actually paying attention to the info, it's still a very entertaining show........from the dancing to the non-understandable gibberish-english....it's a great time! You really can't be m

he's a gr8 teacher for calculas
extremly rude
A nice guy, and he really does know his stuff. The problem is he doesn't really know how to teach it and his tests kill you. They really do. And it doesn't matter how hard you work you are still screwed. VERY SCREWED
I used to be good in calculus...until I took first year with him. I lost interest in persuing math at a higher level. Makes calculus more distressing than it should be and the TA's don't help either. BEWARE OF ANY WILKS!!!!
Prof kills you by his tests, TAs' kill you by their quizzes..... -_-
Mr john alexander is a great professor. He is very intelligent and explains calculas in the best possible way to the students. Its the responsibility if the students to practice the problems and only this can guarantee a good score in first year calculas.
I changed my major to English after this class. Alexander could stand to take an English class or two himself.
Too hard
I dropped Calculus and switched to English. I could follow along in his class and it brought my average down so much.
Lectures are very clear and interesting
advice: pick any other prof available but him...i don't think he's that hard...the tests are pretty fair...but his lectures are useless...like wat somebody else said...it's entertaining to watch him dance and speak gibberish...but u end up not understanding a word...
He is very fair and has an open ear for problems. However, you need to do your work in order to understand his advice but that should be expected with any prof.
Mr. Alexander is Desi (eastern) and as such has a very strong accent.
Terrible Professor.
Despite of doing all the homework (and sometimes even more than what was assigned), I found his tests hard. The examples he does in the lecture are too complex to understand when your are learning the material for the first time.
no comments
I don't think his accent has anything to do with the difficulty of this course...it's a great amount of material to understand, and you are continuously changing from one topic to the next...yet frankly I found calculus interesting. If you find it difficult to follow along in lectures, then you have your TA. Open your mind, not only your ears.
Interesting course..

he is sux
Talk really really really fast and u can never really understand what he is saying
Very unstable tests. Like to keep the average in check regardless of how smart/retarded the students are (no offense my fellow students). Don't expect exceptional grades unless you are EXTREMLY good, but DO expect to fail if you don't work .... hard enough.
good prof
As the years go by, he gets easier. I admit he is a hard prof to work with but if you do your work and understand it your are gauranteed an A. THE KEY IS NOT TO JUST DO ALL THE HWK,SIT THERE AND UNDERSTAND IT. NEVER get behind. Other than that, his tests are more than fair. He directly takes question from the text and his lectures and get past test

kinda hard to understand until you figure out his accent.
good prof.If u did all the works he told u to do, u would be fine.
His accent is pretty bad. Gets excited about stupid things. Seems to be judgemental. Don't get on his bad side.
Nice guy...big family...go to office hours he will introduce to them...notice his jiggle dance between the projectors...nice thick mustache...seems well groomed...all in all...he shouldn't be teaching, hes a crack
Good prof overall, his accent isn't horrible, stop making excuses, tests are challenging, but DO THE HOMEWORK! At his office hours, I hear he's condescending towards bad students >60, he's generally quite nice to females, (all old brown geezers have needs) and he's nice to anyone getting a B or higher
great prof, teaches well, excellent examples in class, and consistent with the text book. Has an accent, but which professor doesn't! Have you ever heard those stupid brits with their tea and biscuits liverpoolish round mouthed accents!! I am Italian and I still think Mr. Alexander's accent was not a factor at all...he taught well and professiona
He needs to retire, doesn't know what he's teaching!

I liked him.
crap!
He starts lectures ten minutes before he's supposed to so you end up missing the beginning of each lesson. He doesn't explain why he's doing what he does. He's the reason you drop courses.
he's a great prof, funny... lectures r veryhelpful if u'r the kinds that doesnt wanna waste time reading the book.... i mean u won't faily if u miss lecs, but he tells u whats important and to the pt.. keep up with the work, ask questions, and know what u r doing and u'll be more than fine
its hard to understand wat he's saying... he doesnt exactly tell u why he does wat he's doing.. he says his exams will be easy if u do the HW , but even when i did the HW i still didnt do all that great on his tests.. he asks 4 2 much in 1 question
ok, where to start! the examples that he does in class have hardly any relevance to what is on the test..he rates the examples from 1-10 and says if the rating is higher than 5, it will not be on the test. however, ALL his examples are 7-8 (HARD!!) so ur left sitting there wondering THEN WHAT THE HELL IS ON THE TEST!!!!!
funny guy, his teaching was pretty questionable at points (all he did was give examples and answer them, but thats all math teachers do anyways)... he was however VERY generous with marking, especially with the final exam... and he weighted the lower marks for EVERYONE less... so hes a nice guy, but hard to listen to sometimes...
I didnt understand most of the things he said because of his heavy accent, i just kept copying down what the overhead said or tried to not fall asleep... I would never ever want to take this course again EVER!
=)not bad =)
tests are ridiculous he says that they're so easy, yet the average is always around 50%
He does have a heavy accent, but it makes his jokes funnier. I found him very clear while instructing and he always answered my questions promptly.
I actually enjoyed this course and John Alexander was a great prof. Since in high school i had a prof with a similar accent i got use to it right away. so in general, great prof and great course!
absolutely useless professor teaching irrelevant material.G
Really knows his stuff but his accent is very strong so it's hard to understand what he's saying at times. Loves the word "similarly". He made calculus fun especially because of his jokes and his waddle/dance between projectors. Hard to understand his system of ranking questions from 1 to 10.
Not a bad prof. His jokes are always related to studying/working hard, which is what you need to do in this course! Do ALL the hmwk. He may seem condescending at times, but he changed the weightings of our tests to boost up our marks. This course is NOT easier than Mat134, so don't take it b/c you heard it was (which is what I did- mistake!).
I think he is a really good prof. He is very passionate about calculus and he shows it. The course is kind of hard, but you can tell he really does want everyone to do well. And what he says about doing ALL the hmwk, and doing well...it's true, I did ALL of it and ended up doing really well in the course.
similarly, similarly, similarly+bobbing up and down like he's got a built-in spring. Bending over and gestures with the hands. Tells stories with "morals". Quite comical when he scolds students in class when talk or laugh
I found this professor very good! Negative comments are just excuses made my students who performed poorly. He is right; you have to do all of your homework, and understand it clearly, and he has office hours for you to come in and seek help, but you must show you did work! That isn't much to ask and it's expected; this is university people!
Great guy, really helpful. Says things are easy, but they never usually are with calculus. Wants everyone to pass, and is available for help when you need it. His tests can be difficult, but if you spend enough time, you'll do good.
He was pretty funny... teaching-wise, I think he was fine; if you keep up with your homework, you will be okay... but it's not an easy course.
Makes fun of students if they do not understand what he is teaching. Gets angry when you do not understand the material.
My main complaint is that he goes through the lecture too fast. There isn't enough time to process what he is saying so you end up just blindly copying down whatever he writes. Other then that he isn't THAT bad!
He was awesome! He made math something to look forward to cos of all his "stories".His tests are fairly manageable even if 1 starts doing the homework a week be4. He does questions with "tricks" involved so you know how you could mess up... is very clear about what to expect in the test... you might not wana procastinate though...
He goes very very fast that you have hard time trying to understand and write at the same time. His test are very tricky and doing the homework does not help most of the times. He is a very funny, understanding and approachable professor that tries to engage students in Math.
make sure to do the questions before going to lecture, otherwise you won't understand what's going on and it'll be a waste of time. going to lectures isn't necessary, as everything is in the textbook, but his stories are entertaining :D but a super hard marker!
i had to take it twice....first time i gave up on the hmwk questions and did terrible so i had to drop. second time im getting 80s-90s because i sucked it up and did every single damn question......class is doable if you put time. never went to any class
very hard to understand with thick accent, and also very hard assessments like tests.
do. ur. homework!!
I had to take this course twice too. The first time I took it, I didn't pick up the slack until it was too late. The second time around, I did my work and managed to get 70s on the tests and final. The course isn't hard, it just requires a lot of effort and dedication to passing.
At times surprisingly rude during class with regards to the students' performance. Snarky comments outside of the class as well. Lectures were borderline useless and resulted in self-teaching of 95% of the course from online videos.
Shows interest in class and is moderately helpful. But extremely strict on grading. I'd avoid his classes.
His tests weren't that bad, I would recommend looking at his pass tests. He actually does care if the class passes or fails, but the nature of the course is hard itself. You need to do the work to pass.
Professor is highly misleading; always says that that you will find his tests easy if you complete the assigned homework, but this is very far from the truth. In fact, class averages were often low... Take much of what he says, not including material content, with a grain of salt!
Hardest course I've taken, but the material in general is hard. He goes through everything in great detail and is really nice about it. People who failed didnt study, or do their homework, not because he didn't teach well.
he's AMAZING! BEST PROFESSOR! I had like a 90 in his course. This is after failing it with another professor the first time. BEST!
He's thorough without over explaining If you do the homework you'll be alright
