We watched a movie almost every other day. Minimal note-taking required, because the lecture notes are available online. Professor is nice, and generous with extra credit. Found the class interesting, and scored 295/300.

Great teacher! Class was very interesting and if you attented class and studied online notes the tests were easy. I learned a lot about Antropology in his class and enjoyed the time spent. I would recommend his classes highly!
Great teacher! Attend class and review online notes for A's on tests. Very interesting class topics and plenty of extra credit available. Recommend highly.

great prof. great southern accent
Awesome!
Great professor, but his tests are hard!
a lot of notes
Great Teacher. He made anthropology as interesting as it is going to get. Class involves movies, with notes on-line. Pretty easy A.
This guy knows his stuff but is down to earth. He remembers being a student and isn't an ass like most college instructors. If you study even last minute for his exams and attend most classes half-awakeyou should have no reason to get any lower than an A!
Awesome professor. Fun & interesting class. He knows his stuff and he really wants the students to learn the material. Very down to earth guy and will help students when needed. Highly recommended. 3 noncumulative exams total. Lots of interesting films.
He makes the class interesting. The class isn't like every other boring class.
Professor Arthur is a great teacher. He is really friendly and tries to make lectures fun. This class also has a lot of movies with discussions afterwards. He lets the class give thier opinions without force-feeding his. Awesome guy!
VERY DIFFICULT INSTRUCTOR, TOUGH COURSEWORK WITH UNCLEAR DIRECTION. NOT A CLASS TO TAKE WITH THIS INSTRUCTOR.
Very good professor, would take his class again if this were my major.
Loved this class. Very down to earth guy and tries to liven up the class with his jokes. Shows interesting films. Chance for extra credit.
I have taken Archaeology, African Archaeology, and North American Indians from Dr. Arthur. He is one of my favorite teachers. Great lectures, balanced work load, and he is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subjects he teaches. I will miss him when I graduate!
Have to go to class, he can be hard, but is totally fair. Genuinely cares for his students! I liked him alot!
My love for Africa only grew stronger, after Dr. Arthur open the door to this world of beauty, tradegy, and hope....I thank him deeply...He's on top of my list of the greatest professor and mentor. -JB

He's way cool. But you have to study!!
Entertainig lectures and easy tests - good survey class!!
Lectures are based on Powerpoints. He is very helpful for struggling students, he had a meeting with me and basically told me what was on the exam. Some of his videos are interesting.
Dr. Arthur is an amazing professor. He's very smart and really knows a lot about anthropology. The videos in class are interesting, and the lectures aren't too bad. He wants everyone to come to class and sometimes gives extra credit if you actually show up. And he basically tells you what's on the test while going through the notes.
I loved him as a professor. He was very nice and easy going, and there were a lot of interesting films. If you come to class he tells you what will be on the test, so you don't want to miss too many classes. I would love to take more of his classes, even though I'm not an anthropology major.
I've had him for two classes and wish I could take him for more! He's very nice, very smart, handsome, and you should take his classes. Tests are multiple choice and 90% come straight from his powerpoint notes. He really tries to make Anthro. fun. Now I'm almost considering changing my major! I wish I met him before his wife did! <3
Dr. Arthur is the best teacher i have had at USF. he really cares about his students and makes the subject intresting!
He is a great teacher. He offered extra credit numerous times. His only pet peeve was people leaving class early without letting him know ahead of time. I plan on taking another class with him.
This class is great! Fun, not too difficult, he appreciates anyone who speaks up! Like someone stated previously, don't leave early without telling him, he might just call you out while you're sneaking away! Sometimes, he takes roll after breaks, too, and counts you absent for the entire class if you leave. You'll learn plenty from him!
Enjoyed the entire semester. Dr. Arthur truly does care for his students & keeping them engaged in the lessons. Attendance is not necessary but you may miss out on Extra Credit handout points which make a BIG difference on Exam grades. If you study and go to class, then you're golden.
Yes, extra credit points are handed out randomly when he sees that students are not attending. Going to class is not required but much easier. He goes over exactly what to expect on the exams, and the in class films are a huge part of the tests too. Study, pay attention, and go to class you'll do GREAT! He does make it as interesting as he can.
Dr. Arthur is a joy to have as a professor. His witty, humble, and disarming demeanor leaves the brain open for business. His enthusiasm for anthropology is apparent and inspiring, and serves to maintain the class's attention.
Take this professor. He is passionate about his subject, tells great relevant stories all semester, and is hot.
Favorite class this semester. Interesting lectures and semi funny guy. Puts notes online to bring to class and follow along/add to. Lots of extra credit assignments. There are 3 exams and one 4 page paper to write. Definately recomended.
Horrible professor with no le-way. Doesnt give your tests back or prepare you for tests.
Great teacher, my favorite at USF St. Pete. Did detailed reviews for tests, told exactly what you needed to know. Sincere and funny.
Great professor and a super guy! This has been my 3rd class with Dr. Arthur. ALWAYS keeps things interesting with his wit and enthusiasm. Highly recommended for any class he teaches.
I didn't have any interest in Anthrop., but he makes it alright. I got sick of his stories, but they were relevant. The videos are depressing, but on the test. He gives out extra credit for events and if there aren't many kids in class. The tests are okay, cramming was fine for me. Take if you like the subject or even if you don't.
While he makes you work for the grade, he helps you in any way possible and hands out extra credit like candy. I throughly enjoyed his class. He has a great passion for what he does and some interesting stories. Always keeps you guess and takes a general interest in the class. I will most deff take him again.
Absolutely great teacher and class! I changed my major to anthropology after taking his class! He also gives out TONS of extra credit.
He's a pretty understanding and interesting teacher. I liked his powerpoints, but he doesn't put them online, so class is mandatory and he takes attendance occasionally. Take him if you like Anthro or even if you don't know what it is; he really brings it to life.
Awesome guy, He's the reason I changed my major to Anthropology. Attendance isn't neccessary, but he gives extra credit for perfect attendance. And he shows allot of films. Some of the exam comes from the text, so you really should read it. Overall I really like this guy. Totally recommend taking his course.
Arthur is best professor I've had so far. Very nice and caring. Lectures are clear and interesting. Pay attention in class, take decent notes, and look over key terms and concepts in the book, and you should get an easy A.
Nice guy. Very interested in what he is teaching & shares a lot of personal experience stories that tie in with lecture. The lectures are long and can be boring at times, but his class is worth going to. Exams are difficult (a lot of fact memorizing) but he gives you all the info you need to know for them.
Dr. Arthur genuinely loves his subject and cares for his students. He will tell you EVERYTHING that will be on the exam - just don't miss review day. He actually wants you to get an A and learn something at the same time. entertaining. Be patient when he gets on his soap box - it'll be brief, important, and probably entertaining.
My favorite Professor! He's funny not boring. Test are easy, PowerPoints are good
Professor Arthur is the entire reason I became an anthropology major. He is nice, funny, and in love with his profession. He makes sure you know everything that will be on the exams, and he's very clear on what you'll need for the paper he assigns.
Dr. John Arthur is an amazing professor. He wants everyone to learn and thrive. An A is easily obtainable if you go to class and listen. In addition to this he is super adorable.
Great Proff! Easy going and understanding. Requires reading for course success (duh, its college, people!) 1-2 chapters/ 3-5 articles is standard for upper level work.
He is an amazing teacher! I learned so much from him and he is the most helpful teacher I have had. He genuinely cares about his students and offers a lot of extra credit. As long as you go to class, you will do great on tests (there are only 3 and one paper all year!). He also shows a lot of movies that are very interesting. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Teacher is clear! Always making sure students are understanding, and lets you know what the test will have while he shows you the Powerpoints.
Really nice guy. 3 tests and a paper. Tests have five answers choices and there are 5 map questions which are easy. If you want an A you will need to read a lot, but if you just want to pass or get a B pay attention and show up. Would take again.
awesome professor that is really passionate and even incorporates his own research into the lectures. The class is simple, 3 tests and a paper and the final exam is just the third tests and is non cumulative
I took this class as an elective with hardly any knowledge of Anthropology. I walked away with a B in the course, and a knowledge of a very exciting topic. Dr. Arthur is an interesting professor, and the fact that he does hands-on work in he field makes his lectures even more compelling. I suggest everyone take this course or study with Dr. Arthur!
Dr. Arthur is by far the best prof I've had! I took this course over the summer and we had 4 tests with extra credit on all of them, no assignments. Great teacher that really loves the subject and wants his students to do well. Really nice guy. Wish I was an anthropology major so I could take more of his classes
Dr. John is the best! He treats his students with respect, has an overall kind and calm attitude, and is respected back by his students because of this. Class material was kind of depressing, but he didn't sugar coat it for us. Very interesting lectures and text. Tests are hard but you will do well if you read and come to class.
Loved showing up to this class! Not interested in anthropology but Dr. Arthur made it interesting with his real life experience stories and such. Would take again!!
Dr. Arthur has such amazing hand on experience that his lectures are hardly ever boring. Tells you exactly what will be on the tests and gives opportunities for extra credit every time. He puts the lecture notes online however he points out specifics in class so I would recommend showing up. Definitely not a difficult class. Don't buy the textbook.
Professor Arthur is a great lecturer and is so interested in the topic he teaches that it rubs off on many of the students! We only had 4 test grades and they were moderately hard. If you pay attention in class during his lectures and if you take notes and skim them the day before the test you'll do fine. I completely recommend this class!
Dr. Arthur is a great professor! His lectures are always interesting, and his enthusiasm makes the topics that initially seem uninteresting worth learning. Tests are easy enough as long as you go to class. There are only four grades- 3 tests and a paper, which he grades pretty easily. Super nice guy too, very approachable and easy to ask for help.
Arthur is hilarious, never bores you, and tries his best to keep the topic interesting. There's a lot of reading to do and he has lectures every class that you do NOT want to miss. He does a review before every test and if you don't show up to the review, you basically miss all the information for the test. Really easy if you just put in the effort
One of the best professors I've had. Would most definitely take again. He was funny and tired to keep things interesting even if you didn't like the course. If you listen and go to class with a little bit of reviewing/studying you can pass the class easily.
hilarious and loves what he does if you go to class you will find out what it coming on the test always trying to give extra credit made me love the course
Genuine academic professor, has interesting background information on a wide variety of topics, good guy in general.
An amazing teacher with easy to understand lectures. As long as you show up and pay attention the class is a breeze.
One of my favorite professors of all time, we only had one paper and he told us EXACTLY what to do on it. If you study for the tests they are super easy and only take like 10 minutes. The lowest grade I got was an 85 all the others were A's
Dr. John is so nice! He genuinely cares about your grade in th class. Sends around a sheet of paper each class for attendance. Offers extra credit for additional points to your test grade. 5 tests and 1 essay. He even allowed those who didn't do so great on the essay to redo it and submit for a chance at a better grade. Has a dad sense of humor!:)
He is a really inspirational teacher and I highly recommend taking a class with him. His leactures are note heavy so I recommend printing the notes, highlighting them and reviewing before the test. Also absolutely read the textbook. Do that and getting a good grade is not too hard.
There were 5 quizzes the entire semester and one discussion post. You HAVE TO STUDY. Focus on each of the types of humans and their tools and location. You must watch all of the lectures- but I watched them on fast forward which made them much shorter and I was still able to get all the information I needed.
Professor Arthur is super passionate and knowledgable of Indigenous people. The class consisted of quizzes, a current event paper, and attendance/participation grades. Easy A if you study. He tells you exactly what to expect on the quizzes. He is truly a great professor!
Super cool class!! It was so interesting to hear Dr. Arthur's stories from the field as well. Highly recommend the class. The exams are the majority of the class grade and are totally doable as long as you go to the lectures/read the textbook and study the geography sections for each one. I used the library copy and it had all the info needed
Dr. John is an incredibly knowledgeable person. You can feel the passion for what he does and it makes his class all the more interesting. For this class you need to pay attention and do all the readings and videos. If you do that, you should pass.
Dr. Arthur is passionate, knowledgeable, and very reasonable. Wont overwhelm you with reading/homework, but you should read everything assigned as it is relevant to the lectures & quizzes. Weekly reading summaries are helpful to understanding the course better and are the only homework besides a final paper/presentation. He will work with you!
Amazing Profesor. Very understanding; I was having a rough time outside of school and he was genuinely caring about my situation. Very accessible outside of the classroom and is happy to help his students if they didn't understand a topic. One of his assignments was to go to the holocaust museum which played a big part in the paper we had to write.
One of my favorite professors. Very caring and makes class fun. I reached out multiple times with questions and received answers right away. Lots of extra credit which can help you grade. No study guides for tests, but lecture material is posted. Attendance isn't mandatory.
Dr. Arthur is passionate. Online course was 5 quizzes and 2 discussions, also drops lowest grade. All the quizzes are proctored but all questions are multiple choice or drop down for the map part. I would recommend getting book because there are FEW questions from it but you could do without if you do very well on the lecture and map questions.
He is a great professor with interesting lectures that don't bore you. The exams are not meant to trick you and you will do well if you study the lectures and watch the videos. You will also need to memorize the countries of the different countries to do well in the class. I would strongly advise that you use geo guessr to learn the maps.
I loved this class, and I tell everyone to take this class. Just watch the videos, take notes, study a little, and you'll get a good grade. You will not pass if you don't watch the videos. Don't buy the book, never looked at the textbook and got 90 and up on all the tests. Super interesting class, loved the professor!
Dr. John is super laid back and fun. Attendance isn't graded, but if you want to do well, the lectures truly so give a lot of insight into what will be on the quizzes.
Dr. John was an amazing teacher. When he gives lectures he makes very dry jokes that give you a little snicker. He is clearly very passionate about his course and very knowledgeable. This class convinced me to change my major to Anthropology before I realized I wouldn't know what to do in the field. Definitely recommend!
I LOVE Prof. Arthur. I took his Anthropology summer class and really loved it. When I had to email him for an extension on a quiz he immediately replied and was understanding. I really enjoyed watching his lectures and learned a lot from them. I definitely recommend having him as a teacher at least once, it was a great experience.
Absolutely the best professor. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!! He is so kind and understanding and genuinely cares about his students and what he is teaching. 10/10 would take his class again
The sweetest man i've ever met. Lectures are filled with personal stories of his travels and even brings in fossils. Designates a class before every quiz to go over material and tell you what to study. Super funny and entertaining. Rarely uses the textbook, only 5 quizzes and 1 paper on trip to holocaust museum. Quizzes are based on lectures.
So passionate about the subject, absolutely loved having him.
Dr. Arthur is a great teacher and very understanding. As long as you watch the lectures and answer the film questions you will pass each quiz.
Dr. Arthurs's class was a very interesting class. I took it over the summer online and consisted of six quizzes and two discussion questions. On the quizzes, he tells you what to go over, which helps a lot. His lectures were interesting and I overall had a good experience in the class. As long as you watch the lectures and review you'll be fine.
Dr. Arthur is an amazing teacher that shows great passion for the field of anthropology in all of his teachings. I took his class online but K was on a trip for a week and he worked with me to make up my work at a good pace. He is very understanding and overall a super kind professor. I would recommend him to anyone!!
Loved how passionate he was and he has a lot of experience! He kept the class engaged and the workload wasn't overwhelming. Definitely learned in his class and I would definitely take another class he teachers!
Best teacher/class ever. Super passionate of what he teaches making it super interesting. He goes over what will be on the test and material isn't hard. Super compassionate too just make sure to reach out. #1 class i would recommend.
Absolutely loved this class because of the professor. He is very nice and super helpful. His lectures are not boring and he keeps you engaged by making jokes and sharing actually interesting stories from his cool travels. He is very passionate about what he is teaching, 10/10 would take a class with him again.
