This class is not for the faint of heart. He is very demanding and encourages discussions of the weekly readings in class. COME PREPARED because he will ask your opinion on what you read. This is a class that you get out what you put in - if you are ready and willing to learn, he is very interesting and passionate about the subject matter.
Lectures are interesting, he knows legal issues inside and out...kinda like a walking Constitution. If your planning on law school, don't miss it.
Great class. Make sure you come prepared and work hard on the assignments. Well worth it.
Smart, Good Lecturer, Knows subject. BUT Could ramp up professional nature of class - some students talked to professor like a close friend rather than a teacher. The class atmosphere was more like high school than grad school. Some of us were uncomfortable in that we didn't seem to be on the inside. I did challenge my grade but I'm over it.
This is the best professor I have had at VCU! Very knowledgeable on a variety of subjects in addition to Public Policy which makes for an interesting class. His enthusiasm for the subjects and teaching students was a breath of fresh air; inspiring!
Hard work. Yet it's exactly what you should expect in grad school and summer is accelerated, so I'm not sure what you guys are complaining about :) Awesome professor. If given the chance, I'd take another class from him.
Yeah, I had this prof last semester. He thinks he's hard but he's not all that. Kind of dances through the subject but doesn't have any real experience to back it up. Wait for next semester when one of the full profs will be teaching. This guy is just adjunct.
Excellent Professor, very knowledgeable, gives great feedback on all assignments. If all the faculty at VCU where like Augenbaugh, I think I would have learned a great deal more over the past 4 years. Don't expect an easy class - but do expect to get more than your moneys worth of learning!
Interesting..Gave absolutely no feedback, and our class dropped to about 10 people, then graded extremely harsh on major assignments. Prob. useful if he's teaching within your major, but would never recommend for an elective. Way more teachers out there that devote proper time to all the classes they teach.
This guy gives feedback on the major papers/exams and he is harsh. He demands way more than any other course I have taken at VCU and it wasn't worth it. He is collateral faculty according to the VCU website.
I would not recommend this professor. His expectations are unreasonable - way out of line with any other class that I have taken at VCU - and that is a good benchmark. One professor shouldn't be markedly different from the rest of the pack. He is harsh on his grading but gives little in the way of direction on assignments.
He is a great teacher. His lectures are interesting and he is sarcastically amusing. I had heard he was tough at grading but I did not see that at all. You HAVE to do the reading and engage in class and you will learn and lot and enjoy yourself.
Decent Lecturer but grading is HARSH. Once when it was clear some students had not read the material, he angrily cancelled class, sending us all home - not fair to punish us all because a few hadn't prepared. He may have just wanted to cancel class and was looking for an excuse. I would not take a class from him again.
He's a great lecture. His sarcasm keeps the class amusing. You absolutely HAVE to read the text to do well because exactly half of the questions on every test deal with it. Your grade consists of only 4 50-point test for a total of 200 points. The test aren't difficult if you attend class and at least read the chapter reviews.
He is tough, and expects you to keep up with the material. With that said he is one of the best Profs i've had at VCU, period. I wish more were like him, i may have learned more during my tenure here if there were. If you're expecting an easy A stay away, if you actually want to learn something, he's your guy. Lectures are entertaining as well.
He is a great lecturer!! He is really funny! You really have to attend class and do all of the reading. It's quite a bit of reading. His tests are 50% from lecture and 50% from book. The online book review helps alot! 4 tests all. Okay class.
One of the most difficult teachers I've had a VCU. I would not recommend him. His grading is way too harsh, bordering on unfair. His lectures, while they can be entertaining, don't really engage the class, in my opinion. If you're only taking one class, he's okay, but if you're taking more than one, forget this guy.
Classroom atmosphere was not professional - students were either on the "inside" or not. Mandatory attendance was unfair - miss a class and write a paper. Way too much reading expected and more writing than I have had on any other class.
He taught this class as if everyone was a political science major. He lecture in the class as if it was an upper level, 300 class
His lecture, lecture summary and the test does not match. the test is out in left field. He talks as if all the students are political majors.
I tried so hard, went to every class, took notes, and listened to every word he said.... and I failed. Our class average for our exams was around 40%. Don't take this professor.
Spring 2010, this teacher was sooo easy i got over a 100 average for the final grade and i barely studied or attended class he gives so much extra credit and curves sooo much, if you cant pass your just didnt do nething, he teaches half from lecture and half from reading and not cumlative except for the final...HES ARROGANT E.C is about him.
I started to expain the complaint about him better but it would require more words. So it is like this. If you think you can pass a test in poor lighting that is typed in small font with faded ink of which you have less than a minute to answer each question that will require thought to get it right, go for it! I say, it's rediculous
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is absolutely terrible. He must not know that this is an INTRO class. He is sooo boring and the tests are extremely difficult. His lectures are all over the place and he is a horrible teacher.
Awesome Teacher. Easy class. I didnt attend half the classes and I still have a high A in the class (still in class). Just read bold words in textbook and you will at least get a B on the test. I dont understand why everyone thinks he is hard...
I absolutely LOVE this professor!! I was afraid this was going to be another boring govt class like in high school, but it's not! Yeah, his tests are hard, but if you actually go to class and do the readings you'll do fine! I would deff recommend people to take this class!!!!
Aughie is one of the best professors at VCU. He actually cares about his students. I have not taken him for a 100 level class, but I've taken 3 upper level. He assigns a TON of reading, and the tests are hard. But he knows what he's talking about and he's pretty funny. If you want an interesting hour, take him.
Aughie catches flack for being a hardass, but he is a really good teacher. He assigns alot of readings, and its important to do them if you want to do well on the tests. Also, pay attention to any verbal examples he gives. Don't assume you will do well in his class if you took high school gov't; his course is much more extensive.
A professor that knows his stuff...this is no "walk through" the park class, however if you skim/do the reading and ask a lot of questions/participate in class you are on the right path. He's not on hard on students as people say...once he sees that you put forth your effort, he will return the favor. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Harsh professor, not helpful and grading is tough. Make sure you go to the SI sessions if you want to pass. I wouldn't take him again. He also gives random pop quizzes on unnecessary stuff for extra credit.
Not too bad of a class. I didn't struggle as much as some people on here claim they did. Readings are VERY important, and the lecture outlines are very helpful. He doesn't baby you and he is very sarcastic (I liked it).. Easy class for me, but hard for most. Tip: find the site for the text book online and do the chapter quizzes. It helped me a lot!
u have to read both books and go to every class in order to get an A. His tests are designed to implement what u learned from all these areas. long story short...u have to read the books and go to class, this class is not easy or a walk through by any means
Freshmen just don't know..Is Augie HS easy? No, but compared to other profs he's actually very generous. Lots of EC opportunities (hint: the Qs pop up on the days ppl are least likely to show up like b4 a holiday) & detailed outlines. You do have to read (why else pay for the bks?!) but if you do it when it's assigned, it won't seem like so much.
Basically, this man is Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec. You definitely have to work in his class but it is manageable. If you do the reading and go to lecture you will definitely pass. He seems tough but he can actually be super sweet and endearing.
Aughie is not an easy professor, but will make you a better student. If you are struggling in the class, visit with him after class/during office hours. He does not want to see anyone fail, he wants to educate. you MUST read the material (at least skim), and the more you participate in class, the better you will do. Don't be afraid to ask questions
He is an excellent teacher. If you do the readings before you go to class like you are suppose to then you will be fine. He gives extra credit quizzes based on current event or things he went over or showed in class.
Great assignments & discussions, not responsive teacher.
Go to class. Half the test is lecture comments. Corny, but funny. Reminds ppl of his office hours often. Overall better than some of these reviews stated.
i got a B+ .. but i have no clue how!! like after every test i swear i failed, but i got high b's on all his test. to sum it up, his test ARE HARD! he's a good teacher . offers A LOT of extra credit!! GO TO CLASS! READ THE BOOKS!!! and you'll do fine, if i wouldve went to SI sessions, i probably wouldve got an A
Aughie was a cool guy. The tests for this class, however, not so cool. Reading is NECESSARY. Go to class, he offers extra credit at random times and the extra credit on the tests are usually from something he said in class. Go to the SI Sessions! I wish I would have.
MMKAY. Do readings, go to class, study for exams and you'll get an A. Good teacher mkay
Good professor. Very clear on expectations. Lectures are entertaining and very informative. Attendance was not mandatory, but if you want to pass the tests, you need to go to the lectures and read the texts.
Good professor - very clear on expectations. Lectures were informative and entertaining. Tests were not difficult if you read the textbooks and attend a majority of the lectures.
He was a great teacher and I'm sad that I won't have him again for a while. His tests are hard, but if you do the readings you'll be fine. Go to class because he does a participation grade and knows who is there and who isn't. I got a B for my final grade and I was shocked, but he is super helpful so that you can fully understand everything.
He's like a walking encyclopedia. Incredibly knowledgeable particularly with regards to the judicial system. Very fair and clear with what he is looking for. Office hours are very helpful.
Aughie is the best professor I've ever had. And I'm very critical of all of the professors I've had at VCU. I've never been so interested in a subject.
His class is extremely difficult. I myself am not so good with government topics but I put a lot of effort into this class and still ended up with a D. I went to every class of his, read the textbooks, studied for every test, and I just couldn't get the grade I wanted. There are only 4 tests which are the only things that will make up your grade.
A really good professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but he does extra credit quizzes on material from previous classes and from his personal interests. His tests are not all that hard. Read the textbook and review his notes.
Aughie is awesome! My favorite professor most definitely. I go to class because I enjoy the subject but in really, if you just read the textbooks, get his lecture notes and go to offered SI sessions you should be fine. The exams are fair, but not all easy, and do have a few questions from class discussions. Aughie is extremely nice and funny too!
He's okay. OKAY. His favorite word. He says it after every sentence almost. Attendance isnt' mandatory but he does give random extra credit points. Even after studying my butt off, I don't think I will be getting the grade I hoped for. He's alright but this class isn't an easy A or B. You do have to work hard for it.
Aughie is a really good professor. You can tell that he really enjoys what he is teaching, and he makes sure if you have any questions that he answers them fully. Definitely made me more interested in politics. Just try to skip too many classes, do assigned readings, and study for exams and you'll do fine.
Aughie is as good as it gets. He's clear as a bell, absurdly knowledgeable, and as a bonus, he's hilarious. His classes are difficult, but he does his best to make dense material easier to understand. He wants you to come out his classes with a strong understanding of the material, so the workload is fairly heavy. He loves teaching; you'll love him
He is the man! He is so funny! Test are hard and read the book! Go to class!
Aughie loves his job. He drinks a ton of coffee. He is entertaining. Do the reading, study a lot, go to marathons, struggle on test, go daily for chances at extra credit - snag an easy B or possibly an A.
Great professor, highly recommended. The only professor I have had at vcu that can hold my attention for a 3 hour lecture. He is tough but if you put forth the effort you will do really well.
Aughie is absolutely great. He somehow makes a three hour lecture about state and local gov't and politics the highlight of my day. Take him so I can live vicariously though you!
I would not recommend this prof and avoid him at all costs. His grading is harsh and his lectures are boring.
Aughie is a great prof. One of the best in the department. Just don't slack off and follow his directions to the T. Make sure you review your notes outside of class because he gives pop quizes. His tests are hard but if you have been reviewing the material you should do fine. He's a funny guy, swears a lot, and loves coffee. Highly recommend.
Had him twice- amazing teacher. He always provides lecture outlines, it almost always follows the exact content of class, so if you fail, it's your own fault. He provides you with everything you need to do well, some people just give up when it gets hard.
Best class ever. Aughie drinks a lot of curse and uses a ton of f-bombs to keep the class lively. He's an amazing person and a great professor. This class has a SI leader. I read every chapter and went to every class period. The info isn't hard, it's just a lot. The class is perfectly organized and not frustrating! Take it.
Aughie's grading is extremely straight forward. His wording on exams can get a little tricky at times, but other than that he is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. My advice for this class is read (both books), study, review, attend all SI sessions and lectures...and then study some more. It's not hard, it's just A LOT of info.
Aughie is awesome. He really takes what could be a boring class and makes it interesting and relates it to current politics very well. Also, he has some reviews on here that make him sound super difficult, but honestly if you just read the notes and study the night before you're fine. He posts all his notes online so if you miss a class it's fine.
Don't think you can get away with skipping class and not reading the book. He posts his lecture notes online and they're great study materials. READ THE BOOK, it'll improve all of your test grades by at least 15-20%. Attendence isn't mandatory, but I love going to his class, he makes it interesting and funny. Easy A if you try.
Aughie is an excellent professor. He wants his students to succeed. While the work is hard, it isn't unbearable. His lectures are always entertaining and made me actually want to come to class prepared. Shock, gasp. Go to class, take notes, read the book and pass the class with a good grade.
Awesome teacher. Go to his classes and pay attention and you'll make it through just fine.
Really awesome professor. I went to class everyday and I really advise you do the same. I skimmed over the book and just wrote down definitions otherwise I read over his class notes and just paid attention. Probably the hardest A I have worked for but it was worth it. He was awesome.
Extremely knowledgeable, and does a great job making the material relevant to current events. A no BS grader. You will EARN your A. If you are at all interested in law school find a reason to take a class with him. Unparalleled knowledge of SCOTUS case histories, and a great sense of humor to keep things interesting.
Great Proffessor. 4 tests. Thats its. The tests cover his lectures and assigned readings. He posts his lecture notes and he is an entertaining presenter. His focus is on overall concepts. Do the readings and listen to his lectures. He also offers unannounced extra credit. Your grade is entirely your fault in this class. Just don't be lazy.
Augghie is an incredible professor! He cares about what he is teaching and has the best sense of humor. I didn't do any of the readings but I did attend every class and studies his notes that he posts on blackboard, and I have a solid A for the course. He gives a LOT of extra credit opportunities but you have to go to class to know about them.
Reliable on knowledge, from law to football. Willing to help if you show interest. I'd recommend to any student interested in pursuing anything in political science. He is motivating, simply by showing his interest in the field.
Seriously Aughie rules! I switched my major over to Political Science because how great of a professor he is. Keeps you engaged in class and is extremely knowledgable. Will always help those who seek it from him and he tells is like it is, which is very important. Be ready to read. Seriously the best professor I have had in college. Take him!
Good lord, the amount that you'll be required to read is unbelievable. Tough grader too, but he gives lots of instructions for what he's looking for in your essays. Grades on attendance, so show up! Very laid back, casual style- avoid if you're easily offended.
Amazing class, and extremely valuable material regardless of your major. His court case knowledge is unprecedented. He truly wants you to succeed. Lots of readings and attending lecture is necessary to pass the class. Participation is a huge deal, but going to class helps you exponentially in understanding the material.
Alighieri is an interesting fellow. Some classes are a wealth of knowledge and others are hard to understand. Very open to helping no matter how small. Amusing and will admit he can be a smart ass. Don't text in class, he might call you out. Use the blackboard lecture notes he posts. Can't pass without them.
Aughie is a good professor. There are 4 tests. The final was much tougher than the rest of the tests (brought my grade down to a C). Attend class, take notes and study them for the test. MUST DO READINGS to succeed on tests. He's a pretty funny guy.
Aughie is clearly very knowledgeable about the subject and made things easy to understand. If you're only slightly intereted in the subject matter, don't take this class. He has a dry sense of humor, but his lectures don't do much to stimulate interest. It's difficult to pay attention because of the way he lectures.
Under ideal circumstances, I think his class would be great. But I have to review the class I experienced. Due to personal problems his class was sub-par. Sometime he would respond to emails, sometimes he wouldn't. Grades took forever to come in. Caprice, lethargy and (some) narcissism is what I experienced--he was off his game this semester.
You must pay attention in his class, and study, in order to pass the class. Read the readings and understand the key points.
Not a single boring day in class. Has a great sense of humor. Just make sure you are able to write good papers and are not easily offended.
Very knowledgable, full of resources to explore the topic at hand, a humorous dude. VERY clear expectations for the course, which is cool, but one of those expectations is a lengthy paper that may kill me. RIP, y'all.
If you're a political science major, you're going to have to take at least one class with him so here's what you gotta know - he's sarcastic. Usually it's more annoying than funny especially in his upper classes where participation is worth 25% of your final grade. If he gives you a hint in class about a potential test question - WRITE IT DOWN
I took Aughie back in 2011. When people say he is sarcastic, they arent lying. He is extremely knowledgeable, so you can learn a lot by taking his class. It is tough though. READ. READ. READ! I ended up with a C+ in the class because of outside personal issues where I couldn't focus on the class as much as I would have liked.
Prof. Aughie is a super tough grader. you MUST follow his expectations if you plan on getting a good grade in his class. he doesnt really help when you ask for it. i asked him a couple of times and he didnt really help. kinda had to figure it out on my own. also not very understanding. spent most of my time being frustrated in his class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM, HIS TESTS ARE RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT
Auggie is really funny, sarcastic, and knowledgeable. I took him for POLI 103 this semester and he was pretty clear on what you had to do to pass his class. Just read the textbooks and assigned readings and attend class. It's a lot of reading, but his tests are half of the readings. He tends to curse, which I find hilarious.
I 'm writing this largely to express the fact that his 'laid back atmosphere,' has really lost its appeal by the end of the semester. Hes trying too hard to be the cool dad. For the last 4+ we haven't gotten through an entire 1:15 class period without him going wildly off topic and covering maybe :30 min worth of material. Still a good prof/class.
Aughie is one of my favorite professors at this school. Other people say his exams are hard, but its all about your study habits. You need to do all the readings (make flashcards), go to SI sessions, and go to class to take notes! I made an A+ in this class by studying/reading ahead of time. He's also hilarious so his lectures are interesting.
If I could have all my classes with Aughie, I would do it in a heartbeat. Aughie is the man. He knows his stuff better than most and he presents it in a great way. Keeps the class engaged and almost always has funny story. Just make sure you are not offended by cursing because he will drop the f bomb more than once a class. Also make sure to read.
He's the man! If you want to go to law school take him. Doesn't mind answering questions very interactive. First had him for con law now pub policy. Makes political science major not so blah
He caters the class to the pre-law and poli majors and students he has had in other classes. He doesn't explain things like acronyms and stuff that non-political science majors wouldn't know. If you don't participate you don't get a good grade but if you're not as familiar with the cases and stuff already like the poli majors are its difficult
Fantastic teacher, memorable lectures, absolutely hilarious. If you come to the lectures and study your notes before the test, you should do very well. He assigns textbook readings daily, but if you take really good notes in class, you can get by without reading all of it.
Augie is cynical, sarcastic, and thinks his dad jokes are hilarious, but he's also a professor you MUST take if you're a serious PoliSci major at vcu, ESPECIALLY if you're considering law school. Word of advice - don't ask/answer questions timidly or with pretense (ex - "I think I probably might know the answer...") Just get to the point.
Easy class. As long as you keep up with the readings and go to the lectures it's an easy A. Aughie explains every topic in a relatable way that helps you understand. He cracks a lot of unfunny jokes, laugh anyway (or he'll make a comment about how no one laughed) lol he's a really cool guy. 10/10.
Aughie makes the slightly boring material SO enjoyable. He really knows what he's talking about and tries to make the class laugh as much as possible. He's incredibly smart and very passionate about what he's teaching which makes it so much more fun to go to class. His tests are hard but if you go to class and read you should have no issue.
He treats his students with a high level of respect, and you can tell he cares about them. You can tell he's passionate about what he teaches, and he makes it interesting. He likes to joke around a lot, and he keeps a really casual classroom environment. Tests are easy if you pay attention, and he posts lecture notes online. Great guy!
Aughie is incredibly smart and hilarious however some of his jokes get a little old after awhile. 4 tests are your only grades BUT he offers few extra credit opportunities like a pop quiz in class. LOTS OF READING! seriously you have to get 2 textbooks and read them all to pass the exam. He'll like you if he knows you're a hard worker. Passionate.
Aughie is kind of a mess. If you are shy or quiet, then your automatic participation grade is a 75% and he doesn't give you any way to raise that. I found his test especially hard because the class is so information dense and he doesn't really narrow down what you should focus on and that textbook is 9000 pages.
His personality is pretty blunt and brash, but he's a good professor. He clearly knows what he's talking about and shows a lot of passion for it. There are four multiple choice exams and plenty of opportunities for extra credit. As long as you read, listen in lectures, and make good use of his notes, you should be fine.
Really simple, easy class and Aughie is straightforward. There are 4 test, all of which are super easy if you do the reading at least a day in advance. His lectures are boring and he doesn't take attendance for a grade so you can come once a week or so and be fine. The only grades are the tests though so if you aren't a great test taker beware.
A real parrot head! Gives lots of detail in lectures and expects reading to be done. Tests depend on both. Don't miss tests, getting a make up is nearly impossible. Keeps his lectures fun but is always on track. Provides excellent instructor notes. He'll work with you but he's not a mind reader. If you don't get it ask.
I learned a lot from this class. Just do the readings and show up for class, watch youtube videos on topics to help you along the way. 4 exams and that's it. Auggie is hilarious, very informative, and straightforward. Actually listen to his lectures instead of staying glued to taking notes the whole class.
If you could take Chuck Norris and make him a professor it would be this guy. Class is relatively easy and you will be given many opportunities to contribute to the class! Aughie is pure flame, don't miss out on the ride of your life.
Aughie knows what he's talking about, he doesn't take crap but takes all your questions. He is very direct when it comes to what he's looking for and how to get an A. If you read, or prepare yourself for each class you'll do well. If you take great notes, you'll be able to ace the test and write a great paper. Participation is a grade!!
Hilarious guy! Definitely a down to earth guy. Sarcastic and knowledgable. Definitely going to take more classes taught by him. If you can't stand humor, don't take his class. He is definitely one of the best professors in VCU's Political Science devision.
Good dude. Extremely knowledgeable. Well prepared. I rarely took notes, never read, missed multiple classes and never spoke in class -- received a C participation grade (fair), an 80 on the midterm (I studied for about 2 days), and am currently waiting on a grade for the research paper (I expect an A or B). Do the papers and study; you'll pass.
Good Professor, extremely knowledgeable and direct. Highly organized notes and study guides... his lectures really distill the information for you... hard not to do well as long as you show up to class and STUDY... I really wanted to like him more but he's slightly arrogant and rude to the class at times... academically top notch, good professor
Prof Aughie tries to hard to be "the cool dad". It's nice that he at least tries to be funny in class but some days I would go in and just be like come on. Just TEACH. That being said, he is still very knowledgable about his topics. His class revolves around 4 exams heavily based on lecture and readings. You'll really have to work for an A.
I got 103% in this class. Go to class and PAY ATTENTION/take notes, know the bolded terms in the book... that's it. There's a ton of extra credit -- curves all the tests and has 3 random extra credit quizzes (no penalty) you can get free points on if you show up. LOVE love love this guy, but you probably won't like the class unless you like gov't.
Very good sense of humor. Well versed in subject matter. Tough grader and expects lots of detail in writing. Always willing to discuss subject matter in greater detail.
This is a straight lecture-test class. Since the class is huge, there aren't frequent assignments to help you grade stay up like discussion boards or regular homework. A lot of people take this more than once because it is like that but a requirement for their major. If you're not a fan of big classes do not take him and he's also very boring.
I LOVE HIM. Aughie is an amazing professor and makes the class super simple to succeed in. He posts all his notes on blackboard and exams are straightforward. I highly recommend you take him if possible.
I took 313 (Civil Liberties) and 314 (Structure of Gov) with Aughie and they are both the toughest classes I've ever taken. Grading consist of participation, a midterm, paper, and a final. Aughie's constitutional law classes are heavy on reading. Take this class with precaution. Aughie is an awesome professor, he wants to help, class is simply hard
Did not enjoy any aspect of Aughie's teaching style. He seemed to take pride in being difficult as well as mean. All of our communication was aggressive, he says it's his humor, I say it's a nasty attitude toward his students. We originally had 4 papers due but they took so long to even look at them we ended with 2, set us up to fail.
he's literally THE most annoying professor. he acts like his class is difficult and cusses you out and gives random extra credit quizzes when he's hurt no one showed up but the class is pointless theres like 3 tests and thats all your graded on
John is straight up amazing. He loves teaching the subject he loves. Frequently he'll talk with other students during lectures because he loves learning from his students. Although the subject is tough, he WILL help you.
Aughie will make you work for your grade. He is passionate about Gov't. and it shows in lectures. The test are 50/50 on lecture and reading. Pay attention to what he is saying not the notes he uses for lecture. Go to office hours he will help you with the material if he knows your responsible, not whiny and lazy looking for the easy way to pass.
He was funny and I liked his lectures, which were important on tests, but it was also possible to pass without going to class, especially if you took civics or govt in middle or high school. he likes to pretend his class is super hard, but don't let him scare you. he's just loud.
TBH, I would recommend him to be taking in class, not online because he does too much online, like the exams are essay, and the textbook don't cover that much. TBH, I only took this class cause it was a requirement and I regret taking it. But this is just my opinion, if you want to take his class by all means do. But Good Luck
Aughenbaugh is a legit genius when it comes to the court system / the judicial branch, so take him if you're a serious poli sci major. His 300 level classes are reading & writing intensive, but they're also rewarding. (They fill up quick) Definitely take him for Senior Seminar. Know that he has a weird sense of humor and often goes off on tangents.
Aughie is my FAVORITE professor I've had at VCU so far. LOVED this class and am definetly taking some of his other classes. If you do the readings and show up to class- you should do well. If you still need help, go to the SI sessions. You'll be set.
Like a different person compared to his higher level classes... IMO, just not that invested in his 103 class, which makes sense; most of his students aren't either. His lectures are pretty boring and unfunny (even cringy) compared to his 391, but you don't need to listen or show up to pass; just wing it and you'll probably be fine. Take his 300s.
25% of all his classes is based on participation, so be prepared to show up AND talk. If you're overly sensitive to harsh comments and feedback, skip him, he's heavily sarcastic and can come off as mean if you dont know him. If you need a ton of structure to thrive in a class, this isn't the one for you. He takes a while to grade so be prepared.
Aughie knows the material really well, however, he is a really tough grader. Be ready to speak in his class everyday and make sure to put your best effort into his papers and midterm. Another thing about his class, it's A LOT of writing. Be prepared to write long papers for this class; he doesn't go easy on his students.
Courts and Politics is a hard class but Prof. Aughenbaugh does his part is having guiding lectures based off of the readings. Do the readings, raise your hand, and he's fair and importantly you will learn about the Courts.
Posts lectures on Blackboard, but go to class because he talks about more information that will be on the exams. I didn't find him to come off as rude at all, but be respectful and don't have your phone out in class or he'll lose it. He's a fun professor and one of the few who really enjoys what they teach, you get what you put into the class.
I had Aughie for POLI 103 and loved him. He has no filter so if you're not a fan of profanity I wouldn't take his class. Always posts his lecture notes on blackboard but go to class as he goes into a lot more depth on his notes and half test questions are taken right from his lectures. If you do the assigned readings and attend class, you'll pass.
Folks who gave Aughie poor feedback must show lack of initiative to pass. Hes a great professor, accessible, and lively. If you have good attendance and do the readings (which are easy) youll pass. Fasten your seatbelts yall, if you didnt know all the drivatives of the F-word you will after taking his course.
This professor is cool. He's not mean (has a unique personality) but he is strict and passionate about the field of political science. I wouldn't recommend skipping class because a lot of the questions from his exams comes from the lecture notes (as well as his in-depth analysis of the readings). I also HIGHLY recommend taking POLI 103 in person.
Professor Aughenbaugh definitely cares about what he teaches. Government is not one of my favorite classes but he made it interesting. The class consists of 4 exams, all multiple choice with 50 questions. The class is not difficult if you read the readings and his lecture notes.
Great professor. A LOT of work. Heavy and dense readings. Must discuss in class. He knows his stuff but if you don't you will be punished. Hard class, harder professor. Not for me. Don't make my mistake unless you love the topic but even then head my warnings.
I've taken 4 classes with him so far. I do it for his consistency. Do the readings. Answer his questions from time to time in class. Study his in class notes and your notes for tests. Tests were usually straight forward writing based. Classes are writing intensive. If you're not into essays don't take his upper level classes. Tough but fair. funny
Aughie overall is a great and funny guy. If you don't prefer profanity than don't take him but it makes the class interesting. I unfortunately got a D and definitely could've worked harder but for a 100-level class with only 4 exam grades and maybe some extra credit it's hard. He isn't even teaching 103 next semester but he's pretty cool.
I took Aughie's Con Law class. He is really funny and explains difficult concepts well. There is a lot of reading and speaking up during class and being able to brief and summarize the reading is super important. I always came to class a few hours early and got my reading done then so it was fresh.
Professor Aughenbaugh has been my favorite professor Ive had at VCU. His class is very clear, and you better talk during class or you will not get a good grade in participation. His lectures are amazing, hes so funny. Dont take this class if you dont cuss or are offended of the f bomb. Love love love his classes!
Great dude, literally (he loves The Big Lebowski). I took his Crisis of Democracy based on Professor Hirsch's teachings (R.I.P. Hirsch). It was an emotional semester for all of us w/ Hirsch's recent passing, but Aughie kept us on course. Great readings, would read them in my free time.
A great instructor, Aughenbaugh pulls no punches. Survey class or not, you will earn your grade. He has high expectations but is a fair instructor. If you make the effort, you will do fine.
Aughie pulls no punches. He is straight forward with how he grades, what he expects and what you should expect. If you have Taken AP Government and/or AP U.S. History, don't stress. But if you are struggling, just ask him or get tutoring which really helps. Do the vocab and pay attention to his lectures. You will be fine. Funny guy as well.
Augie is aware that all students in the course may not be Poli Sci majors and when teaching makes sure to provide information that might not be "common knowledge." I enjoyed most of the movies he picked and our class had a great dynamic, I made great connections with my peers. Augie is great at explaining the topics and answering questions.
Please don't take him, he wants things worded a specific way and is so particular. It's not as easy as it seems, he makes it ten times more confusing and difficult than it needs to be. I took this class for fun, and it ended up ruining my GPA. Not that helpful either, if possible, take with another teacher and save your mental health.
Poor lecturer. Very knowledgeable and passionate. Bad habit of saying "okay" too much. His sense of humor is an acquired taste. Heavy work load.
Aughie is hands down the best professor Ive had during my time at VCU. He is passionate about what he teaches and genuinely cares about his students. Be ready to talk, because he will end a class early if youre clearly unprepared. His classes arent easy, you have to work, but the environment he fosters is unmatched. Also hes hilarious.
Aughie is very strict and is one of the harder teachers. The grades are only four exam grades. He is very lecture heavy.
Here's the thing: Pay attention in class. His tests come straight from lecture notes and barely even the textbook. I would suggest studying about a week before the test and rereading over and over his lecture notes and studying vocab. The tests aren't hard if you take notes during class, refer to his lecture notes, and know vocab. Just be prepared
Professor Aughenbaugh's lectures aren't anything too crazy, but he does try to make it interesting. His class is a little difficult for an 100-level class if you don't have any prior US gov knowledge. The workload is manageable. Attend his lectures, take good notes, read the Kollman textbook and you'll pass.
5 pop quizzes, 2 essay based exams, 1 term paper. Show up and listen carefully, take good notes. Study hard and you'll do well and learn a lot. Great class for anyone genuinely interested in the subject. Extra credit opportunities if you're willing to do them. Really funny guy, accessible outside of class for help, to chat, or to read your papers.
Truly a funny dude, he's passionate about what he teaches and gives students chances for extra credit. Definitely have to put in the work to get a good grade for the course, lots of reading are involved.
Hes not engaging, very monotoned, and unclear with directions. Tests and quizzes are all free response; so he can argue whatever grade he gives you on them. Unfortunately, hes the only Constitutional Law Professor at VCU, so youre pretty much stuck with him if POLI 314 is required for you to take. My advice: dont take him if you dont have to.
*Doesnt round your grade up because VCU does not require him to do so* *turns around and also extends his lectures past the credit hour limits* Hes by the book when it comes to what he cant do for you, but very different when it comes to respecting your time: because he doesnt. You will do the work of 6 credit hours for 3.
Great guy, very well educated and charismatic as well. Pay attention to lectures, do the reading, and take good notes. 5 random quizzes, no makeups, lowest dropped, highest doubled. Research paper was very difficult, don't procrastinate on it, start from when assigned. Midterm was saq + essay, final is two essays.
5 "pop" quizzes, 2 SAQ/essay exams, 1 paper. Show up to class, take good notes. Attendance not mandatory but necessary to know what's happening. Aughie's sense of humor is an acquired taste & he's not a super likeable guy. If not enough people do the reading he ends class early and wastes everyone's time. Expects class to lead discussion.
Used pop quizzes to substitute for participation b/c class was online. Amazing lectures, amazing prof, super sweet and accessible outside of class, always willing to put in the extra work to help you out. Gives great feedback on quizzes & papers - you always have the chance to turn in a rough draft for him to look over!
Only grades are your midterm, final, and judicial biography paper (11 pages). Very respected prof. Will end class if no one answers his questions during lecture. No hw except reading, which there is kind of a lot of, but if you do it you are golden. Has lecture notes posted online - read enough to fill them in and you will always have the answers!
Participation is 33% of your grade, book reviews (four 4-6 pg papers) are 33% of your grade, and your research paper (12-14 pg.) is 33% of your grade. You read like 6 books - read enough to fill in his notes and you'll be fine. Follow his feedback on the papers to improve your next one. Funny guy, super nice and always there to help you out.
Aughie is hands-down the best professor I had during my time at VCU. Really awesome, down-to-earth guy and super knowledgeable. Lectures are entertaining and he has the ability to make dense subject areas more palatable. Do your readings, participate, don't BS and you'll be fine. Aughie is tough but it is worth it if you want to learn.
Aughie is a piece of work, but you'd be stupid not to take at least one of his classes. You need to raise your hand and participate in every class (he keeps track). The material is interesting and he's very knowledgeable about the subject. He's very sarcastic, but it's all in good fun. Do the reading, get feedback for your paper, and participate.
Easily one of my favorite professors to date his classes can be difficult if you aren't familiar with the material, but if you ask questions, he's happy to answer them. There is plenty of reading, but they are manageable. Definitely keep track of the paper it can get away from you. All in all he's an amazing professor!
Really good guy, one of those classes where you get back what you put in. A's are possible, but you'll have to work for it. Class features a 10 pg. biography on a Supreme Court Justice, which he grades pretty toughly - it's a weird project that doesn't really fit with the rest of the class. Our final was optional, not sure if they always are.
Aughie's classes are extremely challenging and writing-heavy, but they are very rewarding in the end because he really teaches you to become a critical thinker. Definitely contributes to the excellence of the POLI department.
Aughenbaugh is cool, just beware of the five pop quizzes. It's annoying, but the point of it is to make sure your taking notes and reviewing them. I think if you come to class and write down the notes, then you really don't have to read the books and you'll walk out with a decent grade and knowing more about the Supreme Court.
Aughie is my favorite professor at VCU, he is difficult, but if you have problems go to his office hours, hes a great guy and is always willing to help students and build relathionships, ive taken two of his classes already and i'm planning to take more. Great guy, be prepared to work, its not easy but it pays off.
Professor Aughie is passionate and clear when teaching, but is an extremely harsh grader. We had to write critical analysis essays which I went to the writing center and a tutor for help on, but still only received a B. I was never able to get above a B grade in his class, even though I worked harder in his class more than any other, EVER.
The best professor in the VCU Political Science department. The discussion and energy he is able to fester from everyone is unlike most professors.
He is a fast talker, take note of little info he says about course topics. Follows the syllabus to a T. Not as serious as he appears. Definitely engage in class! The course is rough it is not a reflection of the professor, although he is a tough grader. Very respectable and respectful.
I was at first intimidated by Aughie, but upon my first day in his class, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy-going and hilarious he is. That said, his class is NOT easy by any means. There are five books which you have to read, and he is also quite a hard grader. Though I don't have the stamina to take him again, I would still recommend him.
His lectures are fast-paced but very engaging. I recommend paying attention in lectures, but using the textbook and other readings as the primary source of information since he moves so fast.
5 pop quizzes, 3 short answer questions. Midterm, 6 short answer & 1 essay. 1 10-12 page paper. Take home final exam (2 essays). You don't have to read before class unless you like to be prepared. I would record the lectures and listen to them on my own time + take notes. Study before class bc of the quizzes super nice & down to earth. Def recommend
Aughie's class is no walk in the park, but if you put in the work, it's very rewarding. Lots of reading, but unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for study prep. Tough grader, but he really helps you become a critical thinker.
Neurodivergent friendly: clear expectations, precise language, flexible communicator. Don't be intimidated; he respects when students dish it back, and is very kind 1on1. Wants students to succeed, excellent lecturer, welcomes questions, gives good feedback, gives partial/extra credit. Honors SAEO, gracious about acute issues as well.
I took his winter class... DO NOT RECOMMEND UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOSE YOUR BREAK. Textbooks were costly and he is very particular with how he wants things worded, and very pretentious- I won't lie. His course is rigorous enough as a regular class, get ready for a hard intersession course.
To be blunt he's funny but his grading is sucks. Graded on 5 things all semester. 3 tests and 2 essays. He's a very tough grader. If you don't listen to the lectures, listen to the podcasts, and read BOTH textbooks then you're screwed because if you don't do good on the tests then you're gonna fail. Don't let this class fall under your radar.
Did a lot of reading and listening to podcasts in preparation for exams, and honestly did not enjoy class very often just due to the subject matter, but Augie is a very good professor and tells a lot of fun anecdotes. Is clear about what is expected for exams and papers.
Never again
