Prof. Bailly is extremely enthusiastic, deep, unconventional, fun, and a brilliant artist. He truly cares about his students' opinions. It is his main goal to help his students grow in every way.
John's the man. He makes it his purpose to encourage his students to think a little differently and step into other shoes in order to make better judgments about ideas. An all around cool guy, if you get John, you should be pretty thankful you got him and not the other honors college teachers.
I only get to see John on Wednesdays (for the group meetings), but he is awesome! He is an amazing artist, professor, and person.. His approach to teaching is always interesting and he is very open with his students. He rocks my socks =)
Excellent Prof, very interesting
The Best Teacher I Have Ever Had. Really Makes Students Think Freely, Which Is What University Profs Should Do. His Art Is Also Amazing. Weird Tatoo On His Forearm, Like From A SkateBoard Death Cult Or Something.
Yay John Bailly! He's a well-rounded individual and reflects this in his teachings. The class promotes independent thought. He makes you create a valid opinion on a topic by providing proof. This class was amazing because of him.
While I didn't have his class directly (I only saw him when the 3 IDH groups got together), I think he's a pretty great guy. He's got a keen aesthetic sense and brings very broad and interesting opinions into discussions. He also likes to question anything and everything so be prepared to backup even an opinion that you agree with him on.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He does not force his opinions on you like some of the other honors professors do, and he starts very interesting discussions. I have him for the small group session as well and I wouldn't leave that group for anything!
Only see him in the group sessions. Honors class in general is very boring and random. They jump from one boring subject to another, never making a point on anything. He is no different than the other honors teachers, except for his obsession with appearing to be different and "cool".
Jon is awesome. He is a very pleasant and down to earth person. very approachable and flexible w/ basically everything. love love love JonB.
Jon is awesome. He has such a great personality. He always tells stories about his adorable son! The class itself gets a little tedious just because there's so much reading and writing, but Jon makes it interesting. You usually can't pick your Honors professor, but if you get Jon, you're lucky!
Class is a good work load but professor is great.
interesting teacher, has a lot to say, loves interesting ideas, lets students be creative. takes attendance and does expect a bit from students, but if you can meet the standards you can pretty much get an A in the class.
One of my absolute favourite teachers here at FIU. Very laid back and open to people's opinions. Other than Draper and Davies who tend to bore you with their lectures, Bailly makes Honors really fun. His lectures are always engaging and he makes you want to go to class. Not a hard class at all- I got an A :) so yea, good for you if you got him!

bailly comes off as nice the first semester. wait until the second semester for things to get rough. good luck future students! you're in for one hell of a year!
This class is probably one of the most inspiring classes I've taken at FIU. It is not easy. You don't read many books but you do have to write papers and build an art exhibition from the ground up. If you are an honors college student and you have felt that the honors classes have let you down in the past, take this class. you won't be dissapointed
Excellent teacher, great guy, super nice. Helpful and interested in what happens in class. Take him if you can!
one of the best professors you'll ever take in college.
If you got Bailly, congrats- you just won the honors professor lottery. If you're thinking about taking his third year class, good luck fighting for a spot.
Had Bailly for 2nd year honors, the Reacting to the Past class (aka role playing) great experience, you'll struggle at first, but it was all worth it at the end. I got an A in both IDH2003/2004. just completely immerse yourself in the game!
One of the best teachers I've ever had at FIU
Great professor. Low tolerance for whining. Loves art, and attempt to incorporate it into any class he teaches. Looks like Tom Cruise circa Minority Report.
John is a nice person/ completely entertaining/ good spirit/ good teacher/ cool guy. He has some interesting thoughts, but he is a total lefty. Politics should be discussed in an honors forum, but honors teachers gave off the vibe that if you are a conservative, you should change your views.
His grading policy is based completely on favoritism. Take another prof if you can dude.
Truly an amazing and amiable professor. He is always available to any questions you may have. Type of professor you won't ever regret taking; extremely knowledgeable.
Aesthetics and Values!!! Honestly, unless you are a student willing to dedicate yourself to art, learning about it, working with it, etc...then its not for you. This calss was demanding and sometimes extremely hectic! IT WAS THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!! Prof. Bailly is a fun professor he gets you involved and really sparks your attention!!
I took John for Reacting to the Past, and I must say it was the greatest learning experience of my life. John is an excellent teacher and person, and I wish I could take more classes with him in the future.
I had this professor for first year honors class. He is very entertaining and his small group discussions are not boring. Willing to help students in and out of the class room.
This is my 3rd consecutive semester with John and I'm glad that I've had the opportunity to meet him as a professor and as a person outside the classroom. He's helpful and very caring. he's also very passionate about his class so it's very interesting. A very liberal (I guess) way of teaching.
reacting to the past was an amazing class! If you are a honors student take this class for your second year. You will never take another class as good as this one.
Best class I've taken at FIU, honors or no. Only class I hated to see end on a day to day basis. Bailey is passionate about his field as an artist, but strives for all of us to get something out of the role playing. I implore all FIU Honors students to take this course. Also he kind of looks like Shane Battier
Awesome! You'll loe his class. Super sweet guy, you just have to read a lot of novels but the art exhibit is exciting!
He is great and very relaxed!
Taking the year long Art & Aesthetics course, so at this point I'm half way. So far so good. It takes a lot out of your time, but its definitely fun. If you are an honors student, you need to take this guy.
Such an amazing teacher, that I'm taking another class of his next year!!! Work hard and you will get an A!
If there's one professor you should take in the Honors College, it's Bailly! His courses are fun and extremely interesting. If you're able to, do one of his study abroads. IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE! He loves to make his students think so if you show up to class on time, listen to his lectures and participate, you'll learn a lot!
This is my first year in the honors college and I happened to get Professor Bailly as my main professor in my honors seminar. He is absolutely phenomenal! He really knows what he is talking about and encourages everyone to participate in group discussions.
I had heard a lot of things from Professor Bailly throughout my three years at FIU, and the words lived up to my expectations. A&V has been one of my favorite courses at the HC. I have learned so much about contemporary art! I highly suggest you take this course. It is a lot of fun, and It truly broadens your horizons. L O V E Bailly and his class!
The enjoyable material makes the class a breeze even though you will be challenged!! Definitely recommend.
Professor Bailly is one of the best, if not the best, professor at FIU. As long as you participate, ask questions, and be proactive in your groups (which is not hard, considering how fun it is), you will do great in the one of the most wonderful, inspirational classes of your college years.
Professor Bailly is a great instructor! He knows what he is teaching and motivates interesting conversations in the small class. He doesn't grade too harsh and offers some extra credit. Great professor to have! Highly recommend!
He's cool, you just gotta participate and show that you're active and care about the course.
I took Aesthetics and Values with him and i can say he's my favorite professor i have experienced at FIU. He wants us all to learn and he does it in such a great way. We go on field trips, read great books, and learn about art. I can say this class changed me in a positive way.
John Bailly is one of the greatest, most talented, inspirational, interesting, and thought-provoking professors at FIU. If you get the chance to take him, TAKE IT. Group projects are what make up the class, so communication is key. Keep yourself involved in the class, allow yourself to get uncomfortable, make friends with classmates. Have fun!
The best teacher I have ever had. Prof. Bailly cares about his students and ALL students around him. He is very considerate of everyone and realizes that students have lives outside class. Respect him and he will respect you.
Study abroad is a scary thing, and professors aren't for everyone but I can't imagine having gone with anyone else, honestly. Europe isn't for everyone either but he affords you unforgettable experiences and if you use your common sense and try to challenge yourself, you'll thrive. Don't be afraid to challenge him if you disagree with him.
A fundamentally changing experience. This is not just a lecture, and many of those who approach it as such will NOT take away all there is to learn from this professor. This was an opportunity for me to question my style de vie beyond a classroom setting. If you're just not ready to be challenged, don't take Bailly. Otherwise, enjoy.
Professor Bailly is one of the best professors Ive had at FIU! His lectures are never boring and you cant beat going abroad with him. He definitely doesnt baby you, and he expects a lot from his students. Would recommend and would take again!
Bailly is the absolute best professor I have EVER had. He takes you out of your comfort zone takes you on tons of field trips, and all of his classes will never bore you. He challenges you and expects you to challenge yourself and thats what makes his courses so amazing. You must work hard but it's immensely rewarding at the end. ignore bad reviews
I took study abroad with Bailly this past summer and it was a privilege and a blast. He spurs his students on to explore and find their own voice in the context of different cultures, while at the same time challenging their voices to toughen them up. Amazing experience. Students saying he's disrespectful and shames students have thin skin.
By far the most amazing professor I've ever had. His lectures aren't too intensive and he takes his classes out on excursions to various museums around Miami for free, which is a unique opportunity. He is very understanding to his student's situations, and is definitely on our side. I highly recommend any class he teaches.
Bailly is one of the hallmarks of my academic career. From his biting sarcasm to the unforgettable lectures, there truly isnt a professor who is better equipped to give students classes with a global perspective. He cares deeply about his students, and he gave us so many unique opportunities to broaden our artistic horizons. Truly grateful for him
Bailly truly cares about his students. Researchs lecture topics thoroughly in order to obtain knowledge about subject before teaching us and only has the very best in mind. Encourages students to go above and beyond in all aspects! His classes are so spectacular, Ive signed up for him again
Bailly is one of the best professors Ive ever had. I went on one of his study abroads this past summer, and it was the best experience ever. As cheesy as it sounds, that class was truly life changing. Bailly is so understanding. He cares so much about his students and does everything to make sure they get the most out of his class.
I have studied abroad 3 times with prof Bailly and it was by far the most impactful, life changing, and important thing I have done in my life. Professor Bailly is the most intelligent, interesting, helpful, and engaging Professor you will EVER have. Take him if you want your college experience to be the greatest it can possibly be.
Bailly is a great professor, I have gone on two study abroads with him. In class, Bailly paints you a picture of the most impactful historical moments, and then takes you to that exact site only to elaborate even more on about the repercussions this event had on society and art. Sometimes I don't think he is valued enough!
He does some very cool things like field trips and interesting lectures, and usually ends class really early. Study abroad with him is really cool. HOWEVER, he's very condescending and mean at times. Makes you feel stupid if you don't know about art. Also, calls you out in front of class, very embarrassing. Very cool guy, but has his major flaws.
Bailly is an incredible professor, and teaches incredible classes. You will learn so much about Miami and cultural history. Be prepared to pay attention and be involved in the classes, you will not enjoy the class or the prof if you don't stay involved. These are Honors courses after all, so that should be expected anyway.
Hands down taking his honors class was the highlight of my school year. He doesnt treat us as students, he literally calls us friends and hes such an interesting guy with his stories and trips we go on in Miami. Ive definitely gotten out of my comfort zone and made memories in this class. There is of course work but its fun work and so worth it
Bailly is the absolute best professor I have ever had at FIU. He is extremely knowledgeable on each topic he lectures about and always challenges his students to think and experience life outside of what they're used to. He genuinely cares about each of his students and really wants to see each of them succeed. Take a class with him if you can!
Professor Bailly is by far the best professor in the Honors College at FIU. If you have a chance to take a class with him, do not pass it up. He cares about his students beyond the classroom and teaches us so many life skills. This class is an amazing networking opportunity as well. Just show up to class, actively participate and do your work.
Loved his lectures, he really knows what he is talking about. Quizzes are quite hard even after doing all the readings and watching the movies. BEWARE that he is not scared to call you out in front of the whole class. At the end of the day you'll enjoy his class. Do not miss class more than once or else that's an F.
One of the best & most unique professors at FIU honors college. He is a bit pretentious, but I mean, he went to Yale. Do not take his class if you are not going participate b/c your grade will suffer. There are many outings and he hates being inside a classroom and lecturing. Not the most empathetic person either, but you win some you loose some.
Good professor, gives a lot of extra credit. you HAVE TO go to the outings, they are the base of your grade. If you just want to sit in a lecture do not take him. Lacks organization and grades everything last minute so I never knew what grade I had until the day before grades were due. be an art major for him to love you.
Prof. Bailly is simply the best. Just a genuinely amazing human. All he wants in life is for his students to succeed and I mean not just in his class, but in every area of life. He is always available to answer questions outside of class and engages us in everything he does. His humor is not for everyone but hey, he's a Leo! But the best kind.
Professor Bailly is one of the best I've had at FIU. It's very obvious he cares about the success of his students. His lectures are inspiring and engaging; he doesn't bore you in a classroom by talking about a place/artwork, he takes you to it to experience it yourself. I cannot say enough positives about him, he is a great teacher and mentor.
He is rude, snobby and is not worth taking, he cares about you learning but is condescending and will put you on the spot if you disagree even if you study and get good grades.
Most amazing class I have ever had. The essays are pretty easy. Just keep in mind the class is physically exhausting and takes up the whole day.
Pros: got to walk in gator-infested waters, flex my supreme gear on the downtown homeless, and got to see the many buildings that are now placed over the graves of the Tequesta. Cons: Finished reading The Prince of Los Cocuyos and there was no grade for it smh
Bailly is such an incredible professor who truly cares about expanding his students's perspective of the world. Had lots of fun, kayaked, walked through the Everglades, visited museums, and his lectures are always interesting. He is easy to get along with, but if you don't take his class seriously he will call you out. He's awesome, take his class.
Get ready to read 100% I think we had 6-7 books per semester, people say tests are easy but they are not, you will not get a good grade if you will read super summary. Lectures outside of the classroom are very cool. The only thing that bothers me - books. Attendance is extra important. Professor cares about your grades and gives extra credit.
Professor Bailly delivers engaging lectures and provides helpful feedback on written assignments. He is personable and approachable, creating a supportive learning environment. The best part of the class is that you're almost never on campus. Make sure to clear the day you have his class. Highly recommend!
If you get the opportunity to take any class with Professor Bailly, DO IT. He is one of the best Professors I have had, and you'll learn so much from him. It is a honestly a privilege to take one of his classes.
Professor Bailly is the best professor in FIU! He is so enthusiastic and passionate about the material. His teaching methods are so engaging and creative as an actual educator of material. He does so much for study abroad and his honors courses that makes FIU the best school! If it wasn't for him, FIU honors would NOT be the same.
Professor Bailly is a gem. Take every class you can with him!
Take the class, the class is very good. The professor was not my favorite, he is snobby and a bit of a show-off, but he has lots of social capital. I do think the class is worth taking, you get to do cool visits while learning. He grades fairly and the quizzes are pretty straightforward forward. Lectures were wannabe woke at times.
He is by far one of my favorite Professors. He truly cares about the success of his students not only in the class but in life. His lectures are incredibly engaging and interesting. You are going to have the opportunity to visit so many new places in Miami and abroad that will expand your perspective on life. Take any of his courses!
One of the best professors out there with such a motivation to teach his students about contemporary art. He is very knowledgeable and wants to share his love for art with his students. There is no such thing as a bad review for this professor. Take this class if you want to be impressed beyond measure.
Professor Bailly is great! I had him for Miami in Miami and will be taking him again for Art in Miami! His lectures are super interesting and he's passionate about what he teaches, which makes his class fun. You will have to drive yourself to the lectures so try to find someone to carpool with! You will have one 500 word essay due every 2 weeks.
Professor Bailly was my favorite professor at FIU. I took him for Miami in Miami and we would go on these awesome trips around Miami learning about the history of Miami. The quizes are easy if you paid attention duing the excursions. Its really hard to fail this class unless you didnt show up to the class or failed to turn in your 500 word journals
He is extremely passionate about art and a great teacher. If you are not into art this class isn't for you. You have to read, write and study a lot plus class last 7 hours. You'll get to visit museums and interact a lot but its too much time. Good luck
Amazing class. I would totally recommend it.
Class was amazing we got to visit so many museums and learn a lot about all types of arts. You have 1 class every 2 weeks that last for about 6 hours. Then you write an essay about the museum visit. Study about the museum for a quiz for the next class. Fantastic experience. Take him you are interested in art.
amazing professor and super easy take him
Bailly is an amazing professor! He is so passionate about his classes and his lectures are an adventure, definitely worth to take either Art in Miami or Miami in Miami. Such a unique concept and you will truly enjoy each site you visit
Professor Bailey was AMAZING. I loved taking Art in Miami. We visited many museums every other Friday and had plenty of time to complete the essays. You get to write a blog. I will take Miami in Miami and I have heard it is even better than Art in Miami.
Professor Bailly is nothing short of extraordinary. Lectures were always interesting and engaging. Very nice and friendly guy who is more than willing to answer questions to the best of his ability as well as learn by your side. STRONGLY recommend. Do have a stable option of transportation if you're taking Miami in Miami as it's not provided.
Do not hesitate to take this course with Professor Bailly. He has created such a unique course structure that will definitely take you out of your comfort zone in the best way possible. I learned so much more through his in person classes than I would have if we only met online. He made the class so enjoyable it didn't feel like a college course.
Take this class to experience a lesson in a non traditional way. He's really knowledgeable about everything and we take field trips for class. He's my favorite and he's so inspirational!
Art in Miami was life-changing! Each museum is immersive and Prof. Bailly is passionate about art history and seeing how art can make us reactive. An amazing class to explore Miami and actively engage with art with workshops & meet with artists. Each museum needs a reflection. This course changed me and made me want to explore Miami & its culture
Do not hesitate in taking a class with John Bailly. He is truly inspiring and changed my entire perspective on life!
Miami in Miami was like no other class. A once in a life time experience, where we learn about the history of Miami through unique experiences and expeditions. Professor Bailly made the class fascinating, it felt like home being in his class.
If you manage to take one of professor Bailly's classes, youre in for a treat, knowledgeable, personable, and a great guide. Every class is an adventure in the best of ways.
I took the honors study abroad course to France, and it was one of the most formative classes of my academic career. Dr. Bailly is passionate in sharing his knowledge with his students. His dedication encourages you to fully participate in his lessons.
If you need an honors seminar course take him he's the goat. Best experience I've had at FIU. He's super chill you'll love the class.
Super understanding, open-minded, and friendly professor. He fosters such a great Honors community, too! Take the class!!! I recommend not booking anything else the day of class so you can take advantage of the lecture locations. It doesn't matter if you've been a Miami native your whole life, this class WILL blow your mind.
class is every other Wednesday, no final honor lock exams it's just essays which are reflections of each class. class is outside of FIU so places like key biscayne, brickell, etc. he makes the lectures so entertaining and i genuinely learned a lot about miami and its history. easy A, amazing professor, engaging, easy assignments, flexible, 10/10.
TAKE ANY & ALL COURSES YOU CAN WITH HIM! He is funny, respectful, and has a deep understanding of everything he teaches. Every class I've ever had with him has transformed the way I view not only Miami, but of people, and even how I view myself. When you've taken all his classes and you realize you would love to take another, return as a TA!
Professor Bailly is truly amazing and so kind and honest. He really knows what he is talking about and I feel like I have learned so much more about art through his Art in Miami class. If you have the chance to take either Miami in Miami or Art in Miami, honestly do it just to have Professor Bailly as your Professor!
